Book Description
Home From The War gives a voice to Vietnam veterans. Thomas P. Evans was promoted to sergeant as a 19-year-old infantryman and put in charge of a 15-man mortar section. Just before his tour ended a mortar accident killed a Marine and dashed Evans' hopes of making the Marine Corps his career. When he returned home he wanted to put the war behind him and make something of himself. He describes the depression that first began when the My Lai story broke and eventually put him in the hospital. He explains the fear of fathering a child when he thought he might have been exposed to Agent Orange. He tells how he felt walking down the hallways of the Colt Firearms Company, knowing it produced a defective rifle that killed several Marines in his battalion. He documents his search for a wartime photo that led to a reunion with his Vietnam comrades. He describes a two-decade split with a friend who opposed the war. And he writes of the letters his newspaper articles elicited from the loved ones of Marines killed years earlier. Evans does a great job of putting the reader inside the head of a Vietnam veteran.

SAme Company Same Time.......2001-09-25
Met Tom Evans for the first time at a barbecue at the Ridgefield,Ct Marine Corps League. He was alone and I decided to sit with him. He told me of finding our company gunnery sgt.
Since then I have followed some of his writings and must say he has a unique style and a story to tell. It is written well and factually. We were there together on some of the ops but he was on the other side of the perimeter. I did not know him in Vietnam, but did know some of his men.
The facts sometimes are scrambled, but his feelings are not, and they are not unique to him. He writes of the taboo subject PTSD
and gives a good accounting of it. Warriors from the beginning of time have had it, and only the Vietnam Vets have brought it to the attention of the world.
Read it as if the guy is your next door neighbor as that is who he is. I have two copies, one to loan out and another to keep and reread.

A moving account.......2000-10-20
This book presents a candid and moving account of the author's experiences as a Marine in Viet Nam during the war. The author tells about his adjustment to civilian life after leaving the service and his difficult times dealing with the negative reactions of those who were against the war. But as the years pass, he goes from feeling he has to minimize or even omit mention of his service on resumes and job applications, to becoming a writer with many published articles about his Viet Nam experiences. Highly recommended.

Descartes: An Intellectual Biography
ASIN: 0801486270 |
Book Description
Winner of the Grand Prix of the Acadmie Franaise for lifetime scholarly achievement, Genevive Rodis-Lewis is uniquely qualified to celebrate Ren Descartes. This major intellectual biography illuminates the personal and historical events of Descartes's life, from his birth and early years in France to his death in Sweden, his burial, and the fate of his remains.
Concerned not only with historical events but also with the development of Descartes's personality, Rodis-Lewis speculates on the effect childhood impressions may have had on his philosophy and scientific theories. She considers in detail his friendships, particularly with Isaac Beeckman and Marin Mersenne. Primarily on the basis of his private correspondence, Rodis-Lewis gives a thorough and balanced discussion of his personality. The Descartes she depicts is by turns generous and unforgiving, arrogant and open-minded, loyal in his friendship but eager for the isolation his work required.
Rodis-Lewis clarifies Descartes's school days, his family's circumstances and social status, the location of the famous "stove" where Descartes first discovered the foundations of his science, his military life, and the birth and death of his daughter. She is careful to point out the gaps that remain in the record of Descartes's life. Drawing on Descartes's writings and his public and private correspondence, she corrects the errors of earlier biographies and clarifies many obscure episodes in the philosopher's life.
Customer Reviews:
A splendidly researched and vividly written biography........2000-03-03
Genevieve Rodis-Lew is Professor Emerita at the Sorbonne and has written a splendid biography on the life and thought of a major and influential 17th Century European philosopher. Ably translated into English by Jane Marie Todd, Descartes is vividly presented in the context of his time. Drawing upon his own correspondence, Rodis-Lewis traces his disillusion with the Jesuit scholastic method and his attraction mathematics and then to metaphysics. Descartes emerges for the modern reader as a complete and complex man, so much more than a mere footnote in the history of science or the evolution of western philosophical traditions.

If you think it's a difficult time to be a parent, consider how challenging it is to be a child in today's world. Recent studies show that children are more impulsive, disobedient, lonely, sad, irritable, and violent than ever before. The authors of Emotionally Intelligent Parenting: How to Raise a Self-Disciplined, Responsible, Socially Skilled Child assert that what's needed now is an approach called emotionally intelligent parenting. An emotionally intelligent parent, according to the authors, follows the Twenty-Four Karat Golden Rule: "Do unto your children as you would have other people do unto your children." Maurice J. Elias, Steven E. Tobias, and Brian S. Friedlander pick up where Daniel Goleman's bestselling Emotional Intelligence leaves off, translating Goleman's basic principals into specific parenting tactics for solving daily family issues. The book includes exercises for raising the family "humor quotient," becoming aware of feelings, praising and prioritizing, and coaching your child in responsible action. Emotionally Intelligent Parenting is easy to follow, and provides suggestions for parents at all levels of commitment to the concept. Parents may choose to try some or all of the exercises, or may simply find it an interesting and informative read. The "Sound 'EQ' Parenting Bites to Help with Common Family Issues" closing the book are especially sensible, profoundly compassionate, and effective. --Ericka Lutz
Book Description
Have you, as a parent, ever found yourself treating your children in a way you would never tolerate from someone else? The authors of
Emotionally Intelligent Parenting call for a new Golden Rule: Do unto your children as you would have other people do unto your children. And most important, they show us how to live by it. Based upon extensive research, firsthand experience, and case studies, Emotionally Intelligent Parenting breaks the mold of traditional parenting books by taking into account the strong role of emotions -- those of parents and children -- in psychological development. With this book, parents will learn how to communicate with children on a deeper, more gratifying level and how to help them successfully navigate the intricacies of relating to others. The authors take the five basic principles of Daniel Goleman's best-seller,
Emotional Intelligence, and explain how they can be applied to successful parenting. To this end, the book offers suggestions, stories, dialogues, activities, and a special section of Sound EQ Parenting Bites to help parents use their emotions in the most constructive ways, focusing on such everyday issues as sibling rivalry, fights with friends, school situations, homework, and peer pressure. In the authors' extensive experience, children respond quickly to these strategies, their self-confidence is strengthened, their curiosity is piqued, and they learn to assert their independence while developing their ability to make responsible choices.
Customer Reviews:
Rather boring.......2006-06-02
I enjoyed reading Golemann Emotional Intelligence and I like children, but in my opinion this book is very boring.
Caring and calm while rasinging your child.......2006-01-19
When you are sad would you prefer someone to tell you to "get over it" or a hug? When feeling shy would you prefer someone to give you a shove and say "just do it already" or words of encouragment?? Children are people with feelings and this book is a great way to help parents and children recognise and express their feelings. This is a great book if you want to bring your family closer together or if oyur family was close but as your child grows it seems to be sliping away. This book has a lot of ideas but isn't a step by step 'do exactly what we say' guide but more an outline with ideas thrown in, and room to breath and make your own parenting choices.
A reader will keep in mind this book is generally geared for parents with OLDER kids. Though there is a few good ideas for toddlers it is mostly geared for children 7 and up, they also cover (on every subject) ideas to deal with children who are difficult or will not comply.
The best part of the book was that it contantly reminds parents of the childs view point, which to many parents forget!
This book covers many different areas, starting out with self control for the parent. The books focuses through out on ways for parents to control their temper and not yell at their children!! (unless its an absolute emergency)
It goes into the usefullness of humor in a situation and helps parents relax and bring a little bit of fun and joy into the family.
Then it goes into ideas on how to improve communtication in a family, bring everyone together, let everyones opinion be heard, and get children to help out around the house without constant nagging. I especially liked the idea of a family journal!!!
Then it goes into different techniques and ideas to help a child make dicissions and learn from consequences (in safe situations), ideas a child can follow to help themselves calm down, and then travels into a "last resort" technique which they call "chill out".
Its known by many (but obviously not all) that time out was designed to give a child a way to CALM THEMSELVES DOWN, NOT AS PUNISHMENT!!! Studies have proven time outs just don't work for children because they are implemented WRONG. This book goes back to the understanding that you aren't trying to punish your child but remove them from a situation until they can control themselves. They re-word it as "chill out" instead of time out because time out has become so twisted by parents today, using it as a threat for every bad behavior.
It also has sections to help children set goals, get through their homework and the best ways to have a talk with your child.
I have seen the main review full of complaints
I feel REALLY sorry that this review is the main review as she sounds like that parent who doesn't have a close family. She sounds like someone who needs to LIGHTEN UP, and LOVE. Its amazing how parents can twist something around just because they disagree with what it is saying so I am going to comment a bit more on her badley done review as it doesn't accuratly state what this books does, as she rewords it and leaves out parts.
1: yes this book covers diciple-which means TO TEACH, it doesn't cover punishment however which is why its so wonderful.
2:touchy feely stuff can be wonderful- I love to hug my kids, I love to know how they are feeling, I love to go on family outings or sit around as a family and play games, thats part of what a family is about!
3: the book does not recommend restraining a PRESCHOOLER. It states that time out is best when used for children 5-12 years of age, and that sometimes children who will not stay in time out need to be placed back in time out until they stay OR GENTLY held there until they do. It does recommend that for unacceptable behavior, to put a child in "chill out" with only one warning however, this book is geared for older children. I feel REALLY sorry for any parent who lets their 8 year old child have more then one warning for hitting someone, or who has to repeat something to a 9 year old 6 or 7 times.
4: "there are 9 pages dedicated to jokes." There is a chapter dedicated to HUMOR and how important it is in a family. It does have some pages full of jokes, while they may not have been NEEDED they were fun, and a great way to remind parents how important humor can be.
This passing xmas my 3 year old son recieved a cute little snowman full of liquid bath soap. He grabbed it and squeezed it and it popped, squirting out all over the carpet. Inside I was screaming "AHHHHHHHH WHAT ARE YOU DOING" but immedietly my mom burst out laughing. I just couldn't help but laughing too. It was pretty funny and it gave me a second to calm down and realize it was an accident and how easy soap is to clean up out of the carpet (in fact it probably cleaned my carpet.)
and finally
5: "psychobabble where plain English would have sufficed" as for that I simply say perhaps your next book you purchase on amazon should be a dictionary or "How English Works"
The only thing I would say about this book is that the forward is boring. For familys who want to be close together, for parents who want to teach their child how to behave without threats or yelling this book is for you. For parents who sit on the floor and play with their kid, or ask them how their day at school was (and are REALLY interested in knowing) then this book is for you.
If your a parent who understands that children have feelings and opinions, If you can think for yourself and want children who can to pick this book up, it is a good read!
A very good book.......1999-09-15
The authors of this book take a very interesting look at the subject of parenting. I think that this is a very big issue because of the recent past events; such as the Colorado shooting, and others. I believe it is important to enforce good behavior at a young age to help prevent later violent events. This book is a excellent tool to accompish this goal.
Some good info, but overall, yuck!.......1999-07-24
Any book that recommends restraining a preschooler to keep him in time out and removing privileges for a school-age child (privileges such as going outside -- hmm, my parents called that grounding) needs help. This book claims to teach emotionally intelligent parenting but it's a mess: old-fashioned parentally-imposed discipline mixed with some touchy-feely stuff. For example, "If a child does not comply with a command, repeat the command once with a warning, then place her in Chill Out if she does not comply." (pg.103) So where does the self-discipline part come in?
The book is also fluffy -- nine pages dedicated to specific jokes is overkill in a parenting book. If I wanted to read jokes, I'd get 'em on the Internet. And it was filled with psychobabble where plain English would have sufficed -- phrases as "material reinforcer" (also known as a reward) and "developmental adaptation" (changing as you grow.)
I was deeply disappointed in this book and regret the money I wasted by purchasing it. For parents seeking more useful advice, look for "Kids Are Worth It" by Barbara Coloroso.
Different from many "how to" manuals.......1999-03-27
The authors make a compelling and cogent argument for the use of humor and understanding in parent/child interactions. Illustrated with useful dialogues, the concepts presented are easy to visualize and implement.
I am usually loathe to read this genre. The instant quantification of an entire field into a few pages generally does not appeal. In this book, no pretense is made. The subject matter is well circumscribed and is covered thoroughly. I highly recommend this book to any parent seeking a more effective means of communication with his child.
Book Description
Take your creativity to another level with this book! Rock music is, or should be, a form of personal expression. This text was written to encourage and develop the drummer's ability to create and develop his own ideas from a solid foundation. This is one in a series of books that deals with one of the most important aspects of rock drumming that of rhythmic improvisation. Topics covered in this book are: The Rock Feeling, The Variations and Development of a Basic Figure, Rhythmic Improvisation, Solos, and Cymbal Variations with the Right Hand.
Customer Reviews:
Great grooves.......2007-05-13
I used this book when I first took lessons, and it's still a great way to get really comfortable with almost every imaginable variation of the basic 4/4 rock beat. The grooves in here are fun to play and can be used in real playing, it's not just for learning.
A New Approach.......2006-06-11
This is a great book because it builds varations over a given rhythm unit and shows you that subtle changes can lead to interesting variations.
Once you know a rhythm and can make variations on it, it becomes yours in a way that most music instruction books miss with their examples.
An excellent title but..........2004-10-21
This is NOT for rank beginners by any stretch. The majority of the book provides a number of two bar rhythms to practice along with 8th and 16th note hi-hats. Almost all of the beats require a good 16th note ability on bass and snare drum and if you haven't got this down yet, this is the wrong book for you.
While I definitely recommend this book as an excellent volume, I suggest Jim Payne's Funk Drumming book as a precursor. It will take you to where this book really begins.
Also, this volume is NOT set up anything like Pickering's Studio Jazz book (which I also own and highly endorse). So if you already own that volume, expect a very different approach from this one.
A Bible for drummers.......2000-06-20
This book is great! It helps you develop your rhythmic improvisation. This book shows so much teqnique! This is one of Mel Bay's greatest drum book titles! This really helps you develop your rock style for todays rock drumming. This book helps you develop many rock variations, it's great. I really love this book! I suggest you try it, you'll definitley like it as much as me!

The Proper Care Of Dwarf Rabbits By Michael Mettler.......2001-08-29
I thought this book was a complete waste of time and money. There was nothing in this book that is not in the most basic book on rabbits and rabbit care, and certainly nothing that sets it apart as being for the care of dwarf rabbits. I was totally disappointed when I recieved this book. There are as many if not more pictures of large and medium sized rabbits as there are of dwarfs.

How to Draw Plants: The Techniques of Botanical Illustration
ASIN: 3822815217 |
Customer Reviews:
take my word for it you want this one.......2003-07-09
This book is GREAT! This book is beautiful, this book is wonderful!!! [gee, think I like the book?] If you are considering buying only one book of botanical illustrations this is the perfect book to start with. If you have many books of botanical works of art this will be a valued addition to them. It is basically a sampling of botanical works of art throughout history. It includes many different artists from all different countries and all differnet styles. The one thing they all share in common is beauty.
If you want to purchase books of botanical illustration and don't know where or with whom to start this is the perfect book for you because it displays so many different artists, techniques time periods and styles.
Even if you already have a collection of this art I can still highly recommend this book. It is that good. I don't think that the book loses much of anything by being a paperback. The cover is of a very heavy material with a vibrant illustration on it. It is a coated cover so that it will stand up to quite a bit of wear. Please don't let that stop you from purchsing this wonderful book. There is so very much to look at and study here, it is a book that you will never tire of browsing through. It is also a great reference for reviewing a large number of different masters in this art form. Get this one, you will not regret it!

Not as good as previous editions..........2007-05-13
I am pretty sure earlier versions of this book featured images. This one does not... Other than having no images, it is the same as earlier versions.
Informative book, but beware of Echo version.......2007-04-09
On browsing this book, it appears very informative for those interested in Victorian households and how the prominent Beechers advised women to manage their homes. However, I purchased the version of the book published by Echo Library, unaware that this version does NOT include the illustrations that appeared in the original book. The Beecher authors refer to at least 77 figures in their writing, but since none are included in Echo's version, it was difficult for me to follow the text or completely understand what it was saying. I feel quite cheated and am thus returning the book. But I think a version that includes the illustrations would be a great reference book for Victorian historians!
Moral housekeeping and healthly living - 1869.......2000-05-29
Catherine Beecher's famous sister, Harriet, may have sparked some of the ideas presented, but did not actually contribute to the work of writing this book. Catherine was a childless, unmarried, middle-class woman, whose great tragedy was that her fiance was lost at sea before they were married.
She was an intellectual who lived in a time when women were severely constrained by domestic drudgery. Catherine Beecher strived to ennoble women's traditional role through education:
"It is the aim of this volume to elevate both the honor and the remuneration of all employments that sustain the many difficult and varied duties of the family state, and thus to render each department of woman's profession as much desired and respected as are the most honored professions of men."
There is a great deal of moralizing in this book, about lifestyle, Christian charity, care of children and servants, and so forth. In this, Catharine Beecher was a product of her century. Yet some of the observations are surprisingly astute, even for today's readers. For instance, there is a humorous passage about cooking with butter that will have you smiling about rancid butter in every dish. In so many ways, the modern homemaker has less to worry about. We can purchase conveniences that were undreamt of 130 years ago.
This is a self-consciously "American" perspective on keeping a middle class house. Yet the French are looked to as having perfected cooking and many other things, and this sort of repetitious praise can grate on the American reader. Beecher was addressing the American woman during the Civil War and post-Abolition time period, during a great influx of European immigrants and when the population was actively expanding westward. She had it in mind to influence the young woman of a certain generation, and in many ways, her ideas were both more advanced and more orderly than what had gone before.
This book is a *must read* for students of Women's History as it pertains to women in the home. If you are interested in the 19th century lifestyle, you will find many domestic details here.
How to life comfortably post "HydroCarbon Man"........1998-05-22
The Beecher sisters and Mark Twain were comfortable neighbors in 1869, living the good life on Hartford's elm lined streets. Mark wrote humorously about world travel or of his adopted home town, what was to become the "Insurance Capital of the World" while Harriet Beecher Stowe could claim authorship of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Catherine Beecher wrote a very practical "how to" book, the American Woman's Home, with a little help from her famous sister. The life they lived had not yet been saturated with the influence of petroleum....that would take some time to get up to speed.

Customer Reviews:
Great for young readers..........2004-05-17
This Avon book is for young readers. A fantastic way to introduce the biographical genre to 4th-6th grade reading levels. Well written, inspiring book, interesting subject, easy to follow.
the real star is steven bradbury.......2002-12-28
I have to say that the real star
is really steven bradbury. if one
saw the olympics in the 1000 meters
, he was the 1 that one. i dont think
i will buy this book. he came out on the
jay leno show and the conan obrian show
and he said absolutely "nothing" about
the sport if it was growing. one has to actually
check the websites to find information about
speedskating, and the history of the sport.
If you want some one positive in my view, Check
out Gold Medalist Derek Parra. He was enthusiastic
in his interviews. and trains at the utah olympic oval.
i dont recommend this book. for the most part speedskaters
stay hush hush about things. it is like they just want to
be the only ones doing it.
sooner or later, African Americans will dominate this sport.
it is just a matter of time.
It's OK..........2002-07-27
My friend ordered this book, as we are both obsessed Apolo fans. I was a bit dissapointed. It was stuff I already knew, and the way it explained things, it made it seem as if it were aimed at people younger than I am. But it had great photos, and overall it wasn't too bad.
Not that great for die-hard Apolo fans . . ........2002-07-09
I bought this book a few months ago, shortly after it was published, mostly because I was obsessed with Apolo. I was a bit disappointed with the author's interpretation of Apolo's life and events. He made Apolo's life sound too much like a story, and I didn't really like the kind of informal language he used. Plus, I could tell that the author didn't really get to know Apolo personally. There wasn't really anything in the book about Apolo that I didn't know. Someone could have very easily gotten all of the information from the internet, newspapers, and magazines.
There are some great pictures in there, though. But overall, I wouldn't really recommend the book for die-hard Apolo fans (fans who know pretty much every thing about him that has been released to the public), because it's mostly redundant. The book is more well-suited to younger fans, around elementary or middle school age, since the language used by the author can be annoying to older, better educated fans (in high school, college, or beyond).
Great Book.......2002-06-05
It's is a review of the story that his fans know well: however, it is a good book to read because it has a little bit of short track history as well as the biography on Apolo. It also has great pictures of Apolo.
