One of the best introductions to Western Philosophy that I have come across.

Good book, but MISLEADING!.......2006-12-14

I absolutely love Sproutman (the author); I have most of his books already. This book is easy to read, fun, amusing, full of helpful tips... BUT it doesn't explain food combining well enough! As my first book on the subject, I THOUGHT it was enough information, but I continued having digestive problems. Later I read Natalia Rose's Raw Food Detox Diet - it not only explained food combining much clearer, it actually conflicted with some of the advice in this book. For example, a piece of fruit for dessert an hour or so after dinner - which is exactly what I was doing, with poor results - is a TERRIBLE food choice, I now know. Now that I understand more about food combining, I wouldn't call this book a food combining book. But I'd say it's still worth having; it still has good information about improving digestion (in other ways besides food combining) and how to think differently about food. It's worthwhile to have in your collection, but find other books about food combining rather than relying on this one.

Recently I looked up something I remembered reading in this book (it had been sitting on my shelf for a long time) - and found myself surprised. I was too hard on this book in my original review. Maybe because it was my first book on Food Combining and I didn't understand the subject, I felt the book was missing something. When I looked through it the other day, I realize there really is some good information about food combining, like a breakdown into subcategories (for example, fruits have 4 subcategories: acid, sub-acid, sweet, and melon). I still have issue with the recommendation of having fruit for desert after a meal - DON'T DO IT. I have personally found it's made a big difference in how I feel! But there is plenty of useful information in this book, and along with the tips about how your mood can affect your meal, I say this book deserves 4 STARS!

No wonder we're dying like flies!.......2005-05-26

I bought this book out of desperation. Although I have learned some things over the years about digestion, I was still having problems. It set the record straight as far as how I should be eating. No wonder so many Americans are dying like flies of colon cancer, stomach cancer and like diseases. How sad! I am going to start today to incorporate the methods in this book!

Easy to follow, much knowledge to be gained.......2003-12-13

When I picked this book up, I was looking for some information on how to combine different foods together.

Good or bad, I didn't get that. What I got instead, was a book explaining the "art" of eating. What the different food types are, how to eat them, why to chew, what causes immune system problems, parasites etc. Stuff your parents should have taught you, but didn't. (or maybe they did, but you ignored their wisdom).

I think everybody over 200 pounds needs to read this book. I really enjoyed it!

My only shot at the book, is that is contains 2 paragraphs of info on Food Combining. A better title should have been "How to feed your stomuch"

A Must Have for Bread Machine Owners.......2007-08-05

If you happen to own an automatic bread machine, or are thinking of getting one, Electric Bread by Suzan Nightingale is the best book I have used so far. I purchased my first copy of Electric Bread right after it was published; now there are three editions available, including a paperback and a spiral bound, as well as an Electric Bread for Kids (which my Grandchildren like to cook out of when they're at my home), and More Electric Bread which has even more great recipes.

I also bought the book for my Mom as a gift with a bread machine for Mother's Day in the 90's when the machines were new and expensive. Between the two of us, we tried almost every recipe in the book, and almost every recipe turned out beautiful, perfect loaves (except for the times we got distracted and forgot yeast, or salt). The one exception for both my Mom and me was the Baked Potato Bread, which apparently doesn't work in our Utah altitude. The Light Rye Bread is the best rye I have ever tasted, and I love the Cottage Dill and the Pumpernickle breads too.

This book has recipes not only for numerous breads that will bake into perfect loaves in your bread machine, but also things like English Muffins (the Honey Bran Muffins are divine), sticky buns, and even a picnic loaf to hollow out and fill with fried chicken. These recipes are made on the dough setting and shaped and baked separately from the machine. In addition, there are a few recipes for spreads to go on the breads.

I like the fact that there are comments on each recipe with suggestions on what to serve the bread with, as well as a good index. There are basic instructions for using most types of bread machines, and also troubleshooting tips for the rare occasions that a certain loaf doesn't turn out quite as perfect as expected. Each recipe has a beautiful picture that lets you know what you will be getting in about 10 minutes of hands-on time; it does take a few hours to complete the kneading, rising, and baking cycle--precious time you can use for something other than baking bread in the kitchen!

If you're interested in saving time, but want fresh bread in lots of varieties, this is the book for you. I highly recommend it, especially now that automatic bread machines are so cheap.

Whether it's labeled 2nd Edition, or Special Edition. These books are all virtually identical to the original edition. No new recipes or ideas...very disappointing.

All the Bread Fell.......2006-07-21

Every recipe in this book sounded great! And every recipe I made in this book fell! So I only work out of The Bread Machine Cookbook V by Donna Rathhmell German. Every recipe out of German's book has been fabulous and raved about by all my guests.

Fine Presentation.......2006-02-27

This book uses a fine color presentation technique, with a color picture accompanying each recipe. I like the "Biggest Book of Bread Machine Recipes" because it has more recipes, but I like this book because of its graphic presentation techniques. The both of them are super Christmas gifts. The collection of recipes is more than adequate.

Unique, great tasting, gourmet bread recipes.......2003-09-07

For anyone who wants variety in their breadmaking, this book offers many unusual recipes that are absolutely delicious. My favorites are: Fall Harvest (a pumpkin bread that stands alone --it is so tasty & substanial, quite different from sweet pumpkin breads); Carrot Bread (a yummy, healthy way to use up extra carrots); Outrageous Oatmeal (a tasty white bread that everyone loves); Chocolate Cherry (if you love chocolate, this is a must try); and Saucy Apple (tangy & sweet with great texture). The recipe index provides a chart that indicates the "density" of the breads. For example, whole grain breads tend to be dense/low rise and white breads are light/high rise --the chart helps you predict the bread texture for each recipe. This book also has wonderful full-page color photos of each bread, a "trouble shooting" section, dough-cycle recipes, and recipes for spreads. Some of the recipes are a little too exotic for me, but overall I love this book and have recommended it to friends.

WOW! I was just given "The Center of Attention" as a holiday gift and was stunned as I opened each page. The cover did not do the contents justice. Some of his concepts seem simple enough for someone like me to replicate. The photograpahy and lighting was beautiful. This is a book to keep out for others to enjoy as well as a perfect gift for anyone with an eye for beauty.

When Mrs.Wakefield is tired all the time,Jessica suspects she has a cold ,and when it lingers on longer she thinks that it might be serious.Jessica wants the lead in the school musical,Carnival,When Mrs.Wakefield goes to the Dr.Costa's office,he says she has a lump on her neck.I can't think of the name of it.She says it could be cancerous,so when Caroline Pierce[The biggest gossip calls,Jessica says that her mother is very sick] Caroline says Mrs.Wakefield is dying,and now the whole school knows.When Dr.Costa calls on Friday Afternoon,It's not cancerous at all,and Jessica got the lead because Ms.McDonald thought that this was going to be Jessica's last Performance,so Dana Larson[Who will be leader of The Droids] in SVH drops out of the play. Jessica lied to everyone,so she does Steven's chores,and Elizabeth's chores for lying to everyone.She even got out of tests for lying.

I really enjoy the SV Twins and Friends books, and this is one of my favorites. The Twin's Mother has a big lump on the back of her neck, and it could be cancer. Their mother is always tired and very weak, and Jessice thinks her mother on her death bed! A girl at their school Caroline Pearce calls, and Jessice, of course, tells Caroline all about her mother. Caroline is one of the girls who love to gossip, and by the time the twins get to school, Everybody thinks their mother is dying (when deep down, Jessice knows that her mother is definetly not dying). She gets everyone's sympathetic sorrys. And, Jessica really wants to be in the school musical Carnival, and she wants everyone's sympathetic words to get her into the play easy-peasy. Elizabeth is furious when she finds out what Jessica is doing, Will Jessica get the part in the play?

I found the main character in this book difficult to feel sorry for. The depth of feeling for her mother's welfare seemed incongruous with her behavior toward her siblings and "friends". She bosses, lies, begs, and schemes. But in the end is rewarded with a small solo part in the play, a new coveted sweater, and more undeserved admiration.

Jessica reveals her vulnerable side when her mother has tests for cancer.While leval-headed Elizabeth calmly goes about her business,Jessica has as over-active imagination aas always and is convinced her mother will die,and cries alot.People feel so sorry for the poor girl that they let her have the lead in the school play,no auditions needed.When Jessica finds out her mother has had nothing more than a flu,she has a hard time deciding whether she should tell people,or keep her part in the play.!

I love the Sweet Valley Twins books. They're always so much fun to read. They are a great alternative to TV. In this story, Jessica Wakefield is convinced her mother is deathly ill. (Actually, her mother is ill, but not dying) The whole school hears of this "tragic illness," and gives Jessica special attention to make her feel better. But eventually, Jessica discovers she is enjoying the attention too much, and that she hasn't deserved all the treatment. It's very interesting, and really enjoyable. Often times, normal people get caught up in exaggerations just like Jessica did, and getting out of the situations is not always easy. This book is a fun read! Go ahead, give it a try!

I am working on a seminary doctoral project on bully prevention. This book was an invaluable resource for the project. Parents need to understand the difficulties and hardships that today's children must endure.

This is a must-read for today's parents and educators. Buy one for yourself, and one as a donation to your school's resource library--that's what I did. This book helps us empower our children, awaken ourselves to the ongoing crisis on the playground, and break the cycle of abuse. Many victims become bullies...and many more children are silent witnesses to a secret code of intimidation that can lead to horrific violence over time. This book is an excellent tool to break the cycle. We owe it to our children to give them skills with which to break out of the typical victim/bully/witness trap. They will be better for it, and safer. Buy two now.

Pretty Good.......2000-07-11

This is a pretty good book. I also recommend Helen Smith's "The Scarred Heart: Understanding and Identifying Kids Who Kill," which has a lot to say about the way bullying can lead to serious violence when schools don't take it seriously -- and some examples from schools that have dealt with bullying well, along with some that have dealt with it badly.

This book takes on school bullying with power and answers........1999-09-20

Bullies & Victims is powerful testimony and documentation of how bullying in the school maims and damages both the victim and the bully. The all-too-frequent ability of one's peers to mete out cruelty and abuse is painful to read but necessary to face. The authors show how the long-term effects of these destructive conflicts have grave consequences for schools, families and society. But this fine book does not just describe the abuse and then simply wring its hands. The Frieds have practical and creative solutions and interventions which should galvanize schools, teachers, parents and everyone to action: a crash program to eliminate bullying from our schools so that our children are free of fear and free to flourish.

We Need More Haibun in English!.......2002-09-03

Haibun is a Japanese form consisting of poetic prose with haiku and/or tanka interspersed or at the end of the piece. The title is an allusion to the work, "The Narrow Path to the Interior" by the great haiku master Basho.

Ross writes a priceless introduction to haibun that serves as a course all by itself so if you know nothing at all about this wonderful form, you will come away from this book with a solid foundation.
