Book Description
It's the drama, danger, tragedy, heroism, smoke, shouts, and shellfire of historic battles, captured in one large, lavish volume. Maps, artists' renditions of battlefields, historic photos, topographic diagrams, and vivid text combine in reconstructions of 17 military conflicts that changed the course of history. From the American Civil War, author Tim Newark describes First Bull Run (1861), Chickamauga (1863), and Vicksburg (1863). From World War I he presents Verdun (1916), and Vimy Ridge (1917). Among several major World War II battles he recounts are the Battle of Britain and London Blitz (1940), rightly called by Winston Churchill England's finest hour; Arnhem (1944), which inspired the film, A Bridge Too Far; and the Battle for Berlin (1945), which marked the end of the Nazi Third Reich. Momentous battles from the more distant past are also covered, including Constantinople (1453), the Turkish offensive that brought about the Byzantine Empire's collapse; and Culloden (1746), the last battle fought on British soil between the Scots and the English. Every combat description includes: Eyewitness accounts ... Historic photos and illustrations ... Battle maps indicating troop movements ... Diagrams showing terrain ... A map of each site and tour route as it is today. Both armchair history buffs and visitors to the battle sites will value this handsome volume's many features, its detailed descriptions, and its clear analyses of battle plans and operations. A directory at the back of the book lists battle museums and tour operations open to visitors. More than 300 full-color illustrations.

Orestes Brownson: Sign of Contradiction.......2000-07-11
This little book has the same problem as much of the materialcoming out of academia these days. All complexity and jargon, and noability to tell a story or relate the insights to the broader, contemporary flow of ideas at the time our subject lived. Where a simple word would suffice, Herrera uses arcane words that often leave you grabbing for a dictionary. More importantly, however, we get mostly opinions from the author, and after having slogged through 200 pages, know very little about Orestes Brownson, and his times. I learned more about Brownson's thinking from two short extracts of his writings from a primary source book on religion in America, then I did in this entire work. Instead of decent quotes from his writings, and other primary sources, we unfortunately are fed repetitive blather, and sketchy analysis about Orestes' often changed views, his contradictions (to wit the title), and the usual overly critical analysis from today's modern scholars. My copy of this rather expensive little book... is now being contributed to my local library. Otherwise, it would have ended up in the wastepaper basket. A much wiser investment would be to obtain a synopsis of Brownson's actual writings even if the cost was more than this overpraised book as contained in the other reviews.
A Charming Look at a True American Eccentric.......2000-04-24
Orestes Brownson was a writer, philosopher, and cultural critic. He was also an Catholic during a period in this country when it was not publically orthodox to be a Catholic. Never more than an intellectual gadfly to begin with, Brownson's intellectual star faded soon after his death and he entered a sort of intellectual purgatory, becoming the subject for obscure Ph.D theses and academic biographers in search of a subject no one else had tackled. Now Brownson is brought back to life in a rather charming portrait by, all of people, a fellow teaching alumni. Orestes Brownson had taught at Seton Hall University, in New Jersey, for a brief period of his life, as did his current biographer, Robert Herrera. Perhaps it's the Seton Hall connection that's responsible, but Herrera does a nice job of breathing life back into the old boy and letting us see him warts and all. Instead of conforming Brownson to his image, Herrera instread conforms to Brownson's image and what emerges is a full, rich portrait of both the man and his times, of the critic and the subject of his criticism. Another selling point for this book, besides its brevity (Why do academics feel they have to give us every nugget of their subject's life?), is its refusal to bend to the politically correct winds that currently constitue the Public Orthodoxy of our squalid intellectual times. If you love American intellectual history (and, no, that is not an oxymoron), you will love this charming little tome.
An Insightful Look at an Unjustly Neglected Philosopher.......1999-07-24
Orestes Brownson was one of the most original, and eccentric, American philosophers of the 19th century. It has been his unfortunate fate to slide into obscurity in the 20th century. Now he has been brought to vibrant life in sn excellent new study of his life and works by R.A. Herrera. The strength of this book lies in its interweaving of Brownson's life and thought, taking care not to tip the scales in favor of either. The importance of this method cannot be stressed enough because of the obscurity into which Brownson has fallen. Herrera is not out to rehabilitate Brownson; far from it. But he does provide an insightful new look at this iconoclastic thinker who was always swimming against the intellectual tides of his times. Highly recommended.

Excellent tool.......2006-01-23
I've read this book twice now. The first time I was still using and the second when I quit. It was a very comprehensive guide and I'm so glad I bought it. Thanks so much for the help Jerry.
Jerry Dorsman is a professional, and his book can help you!.......1999-03-22
I've worked with Jerry Dorsman closely, and I wanted to share with you my personal high regards for Jerry Dorsman and his new book "How to Quit Drugs for Good". I was fortunate enough to see Jerry apply many of the methods he details in his book with real people in real settings. Jerry is not a one-track thinker and is aware that different strokes work for different folks. The purpose of his book is to highlight the whole spectrum of treatments available for addictions so that the reader can better select a treatment more suitable to their unique needs. It is a comprehensive manual that goes into detail about all drugs, their effects, and effective treatments and therapies available. One would do very well in selecting this book to help themselves or as a manual in helping others in the field of addictions treatment. I found his first book "How to Quit Drinking Without AA" an essential tool in my own counseling experiences. It was so incredibly useful from a concrete treatment perspective that I referenced it in my own treatment plan development. I saw great results, and I stand by that. That's all I needed to see. Now I recommend all his books, because he cuts right to the chase without all the fluff. When you're in trouble, you don't want to waste time. You want to know what to do and how as soon as you can. This book is not the cure, but it's the best stepping stone to the cure only you can provide. Trust me on this!
Book Description
This is the new definitive seafood cookbook from writer and chef Jay Harlow. West Coast Seafood addresses the finfish and shellfish, ocean and fresh water catch available fresh from California to Alaska, with over 250 recipes, both basic and lavish.
This important new cookbook introduces the up-to-the-minute selection of fresh fish and shellfish available on the West Coast and furnishes 250 wonderful recipes that bring out the most in albacore, spot prawns, black cod, salmon, rainbow trout, petrale sole, skate, oysters, and more. It includes color photographs.

Picture yourself standing before the fish monger's display case with the day's catch all nicely laid out on gleaming shaved ice, the price tags and labels in place, the fishmonger's retail smile intact. He's waiting, patiently, for you to make up your mind. Trouble is, you're shopping for a specific fish, and it's not for sale. So what do you do, fall back on old tried-and-true recipes for the seafood you recognize in the case? You can hear your family yawning, can't you?
Fear not, lover of seafood. Jay Harlow has written West Coast Seafood: The Complete Cookbook. Tuck this sucker under your arm next time you head out the door and you will never again suffer seafood angst. Nor will you have to stand in front of the fish counter thumbing through a book like a damned fool. Harlow, you see, has organized West Coast Seafood by type of seafood, not according to where in a meal the dish will be served.
And if that doesn't tell you that this guy knows what he's doing, then just dig in. Complete Cookbook falls short of the mark; Final Word comes closer. Because everything is here: all the information you need to select the best-quality seafood; instructions to clean and prep the seafood you bring home; and then a wide flavor range and cooking-style range to keep new and exciting dishes coming to the dinner table.
The finned fish of fresh and salt water, both wild and farmed, are all here. Can't stand the idea of another grilled salmon steak? Try Kurt's Salmon with Oyster Stuffing. And if there are any leftovers, go straight to Salmon Cakes. How does Grilled Halibut with Roasted Garlic Marinade sound? Or Halibut Cooked with Poblano Chiles and Cream? Yes, there are Dungeness Crab Cakes in West Coast Seafood, but you will also find Stir-Fried Crab with Chiles and Ginger.
There are no desserts. But Harlow does end his book with a selection of appropriate sauces as well as two essays on the future of fishing, and the place of aquaculture. Like the entire book, well worth reading. --Schuyler Ingle
Customer Reviews:
The essential guid to Seafood.......2007-01-31
This book is probably the best cook book I have ever used. It contains detailed descriptions of a vast array of seafood along with copious information on buying and prepping each type. The recipes range from simple to modestly complex. They generally focus on enhancing the flavor of the seafood with a few well selected accent flavors. They are creative and easy to follow.
Easy and yummy recipes.......2003-07-18
Living in Seattle we wanted to take advantage of all the fresh fish available, but we had no idea how to cook it. Everything we have tried out of this book has been easy and delicious. Most of the recipes give suggestions for side dishes which makes meal planning even easier. Whenever we get fish for dinner this is the cookbook we pull out!
The "gotta' have" seafood book for West Coast dwellers.......2001-04-01
This is a great reference for cooks at any level of ability. Fundimentals of buying, cutting up, basic techniques, and cooking safety. Easy to follow recipes which are not fussy and don't loose the flavor of the seafood in the sauces, yet can be quite sophisticated. Expanded information, definitions and seafood facts which can enlighten profesional chefs and intertain those who pick-up cookbooks for leasure reading. For example, what constitutes 'white fish',who are the grazers and the predators in the ocean, and how is caviar farmed.
Easy to follow - Outstanding Taste.......2000-03-29
This book is wonderful for cooks that use seafood comes from the California coast. The recipes do not take require the resume of a rocket-scientist and yet the finished courses look, taste and smell like fine cuisine from a highly rated restaurant.
Great recipes for every day or special entertaining occasions.

Superb Photographs.......2007-08-29
A well-assembled, passionate, generalist overview of venomous snakes. But the pictures! Over 200 pages of glossy photographs that convey a ton of information and a lot of drama.
This book lacks bite!.......2000-04-15
I bought this book to add to my reptile library and to use a reference. Before my trip to the jungles of Costa Rica, I thought I'd read up on some of the more onery snakes that I might encounter, such as the bushmaster and fer-de-lance. Not only were there no pictures or information on the bushmaster, it wasn't even listed in the index! As for the fer-de-lance, there was a single picture but no information. I have since read the entire book, and have found it to be extremely lacking in useful species-specific information. The chapter titled "A Few Interesting Species" is very short (about 30 pages), not to mention it excludes some fairly important species! For the beginning enthusiast who just wants a general overview, this would be a good place to start, but don't let your education stop here! The book's only redeeming qualities for me were some nice glossy photos and the anecdotes written by herpetologists with snake bite or near miss experiences.
Good, but needed more detail.......1999-08-06
This was a good introductory book but did not go into enough detail for my taste.I did like the anecdotes and the pictures were great.
An often too simplistic general overview of venomous snakes........1999-04-19
This book provides a basic general overview that is good, but is geared towards the inexperienced snake enthusiast and does not get into depth on any subject. Ironically, the subject that is covered in most depth is mouse breeding. That space could have given room to more thorough species descriptions covering most genera. Also, too many photos that have been seen elsewhere in TFH Books.

My Name Is Bill W
ASIN: 1558492453 |
Book Description
William Griffith Wilson, cited by "Time" magazine as one of the hundred most influential individuals of the twentieth century, is better known as Bill W., cofounder of Alcoholics Anonymous. In this book, Matthew J. Raphael, himself a member of A.A. (and writing here under a pseudonym, in accordance with A.A.'s tradition of anonymity), presents a revealing new look at both the legendary Bill W. and the private Mr. Wilson, who tried to live apart from his own celebrity.
Customer Reviews:
Required reading for the curious........2005-12-27
Literary scholar and professor of English, John W. Crowley, writing under the pen name Matthew J. Raphael, renders a refreshing perspective on the life of Bill Wilson, founder-in-chief of Alcoholics Anonymous.
With "Bill W. and Mr. Wilson" Crowley expanded his personal bibliography of works pertaining to alcoholism and drinking, including "The White Logic: Alcoholism and Gender in American Modernist Fiction" (1994), "Drunkard's Progress: Narratives of Addiction, Despair, and Recovery" (1999), and most recently, "Drunkard's Refuge: The Lessons of the New York State Inebriate Asylum" (2004).
Like other recent Wilson biographers, Crowley critically examines key events in Wilson's story and flirts with exposé. Unfortunately, the criticism goes only as far as an adoring fan of Bill Wilson could permit. Crowley has to be careful not to lose his AA readership at the same time he has to preserve his own faith. It's a slack tightrope, but casual readers will be left believing he has made it to the other side safely. Others will see the length of the rope and draw their own conclusions.
This book is an absolute must-read for anyone with an interest in the origins of Alcoholics Anonymous.
For thoughtful, intelligent readers, it gets no better..........2003-02-28
I was given this book as an early gift for my 5-year sobriety birthday. In April 1998, I took what I hope was my last drink. In April 2003, "God willin' and the creek don't rise," I will celebrate that 5-year milestone. I've read all the AA-approved treatments of our co-founders and their lives, and much of the non-conference-approved canon on the life of William G. Wilson. This book quickly became my favorite because of its honesty. Rather than painting Bill W. as God's special instrument, divinely appointed to save us drunks and led by God as if by puppet strings, this book paints an appropriately complex picture of a real human being -- a drunk like me. Raphael's take on Bill W. is based on tremendous research and a great deal of thought, as well as the wisdom of long-term, "good" sobriety. The writing is lucid and readable, though I did have to consult the dictionary twice. (I don't mind that, though -- being stretched a little. Good books should do that, don't you think?) For anyone interested in AA's legendary cofounder, I give this book a 5-star recommendation. It doesn't get better than this for thoughtful members of the recovery community.
A disappointment.......2000-10-17
I picked up this book after finishing Francis Hartigan's fine biography of Bill Wilson. I simply could not finish this book. "Raphael," the pseudonym of the author used in accordance with AA's 12th tradition, does a slip-shod job of reserching this subject, and mainly spends his time writing textual rifs based on his own interior monolog.
This kind of writing seemed OK in the 70s, but now that Raphael and I have sobered up, it doesn't seem very interesting.
Buy it, Read it! Think about it!.......2000-08-09
Only 3500 copies initially published. Sure to be a cult book like Igor Sikorsky's "Aa's Godparents : Three Early Influences on Alcoholics Anonymous and Its Foundation : Carl Jung, Emmet Fox, Jack Alexander" and copies will be hoarded and in great demand. The cover of the book is outstanding, from a painting, NIGHTHAWKS by Edward Hopper 1942, its compelling.
The book, like its cover, also is compelling. The author has an easy to read but euridite and somewhat pedantic style that once I became used to it was very comfortable. Its been a long time since I encountered the terms termagant or fin de siecle.
The facts and narratives are always interesting and I find myself agreeing and disagreeing with a number of statements and conclusions but I have to think them out. Items covered extremely well are existentialism, deflation in depth, desire for salvation, The Varities of Relegious Exerience, and the list goes on. That it has compelled me to think out some preconceived views is what I find to be the best characteristic of this book. Read the book and "Let your response happen."
Factually it is nicely done. I admire and respect the author's endeavors.
That said, there are several holes that I wish had been explored:
The Hebrew and Greek concept of "Metanoia" is mentioned in a shallow passage that dismisses it as a purely "Protestant" concept. Father John Doe's, Ralph Pfau, writings would be a place to start. Repentance is more than confessing and saying you are sorry... (there are more than 4 steps!)
Where o where is any reference to Emmet Fox? The Sermon on the Mount has been called the "Little Big Book" and there are several histories where it is noted that it was given out at meetings before there was a big book. The author did a wonderful job of tying linage back to the (Shoemaker, Buchman) Oxford Group, I found myself wishing he had done the same with Emmet Fox. (The Sermon on the Mount is still AA approved literature.)
Several Long/Old/Seasoned Timers have mentioned that Bill, while writing the 164 pages at the mystical white kitchen table, constantly used and referenced the Bible, New Testament, and the book of James. I would have liked to have seen this aspect covered with the same ability the author showed with Nell Wing's viewpoint.
Bill W has a pamphlet which is AA approved and published where he addresses an AMA medical conference. In it he simultaneously describes the program along three tracks - 1) Psychological, 2) Philosophical, and 3) Spiritual. I found myself hoping the author was going to cover this material. Alas, no such chapter.
But it was a great book, I wanted more of the Author's reasoned, diligently researched and insightful conversational text. Even though I did not completely or necessarially agree, I really enjoyed the process of the reading experience. I truly enjoyed the book. It made me think, made me agree and disagree, informed me, and affected me. I really would like to have seen it be twice as long.
In the stepping stones section where the author discribes Lois W. as saying that Bill W. did truly achieve humility was wonderfully led up to, framed, and presented. I felt, se finis, as if Bill was saying to me, out of this book, "True ambition is to walk humbly and to live usefully under God's Grace."
Well Done! Bravo

Book Description
It took endurance beyond belief. On Christmas Day, 1941, Hong Kong fell to the Japanese Army, and George Wright-Nooth--along with many other British soldiers and personnel stationed there--became their prisoner. This is their shocking story, captured in Wright-Nooth's secret diary, kept at great risk. What unfolds is the horrifying tale of near starvation, cruel beatings, and massacres. The term "turnip heads" comes from the nickname that the Chinese called the Japanese, their long-time enemies.
Customer Reviews:
Very moving and well-written.......2003-10-31
This is a very moving and well-written memoire; given the tragic events, it is not possible for such a book to do other than include some very sad & brutal stories. I have visited Hong Kong on numerous occasions and it was interesting to relate the events described in this book to the places I knew.
A superbly vivid account of POW life in Hong Kong.......2001-03-10
The cruelty and depravity demonstrated by the Japanese during their occupation of Hong Kong between 1941 and 1945 is one of the less well-documented chapters of the Second World War. Yet, as George Wright-Nooth demonstrates with such freshness and clarity in this autobiographical account, it is as great a story of heroism, endurance, and poignancy as any other of its time. The image of 33 individuals, British, Chinese and Indian, preparing to be executed by beheading, and being comforted from among their own group by an Sandhurst-trained Indian officer and a Hong Kong Chinese man leading prayers will long remain in the mind. What also brings the book to life are the diary extracts and the author's excellent memory for detail, which superbly capture the sense of a young Englishman caught in the sweep and suffering of a wider tragedy, but somehow retaining his spirit, his inquisitiveness and that uniquely British sense of humour that shines undimmed through fifty years and the terrible things he saw and experienced.
