Book Description
This collection of true stories celebrates the lives of a handful of vagabond dogs who spurned confinement and one-family ownership. Each dog's tale is unique: Boozer had his own bank account and appeared on Good Morning America; Owney spent his life riding U.S. mail trains and can now be seen in the Smithsonian Institute; Greyfriars Bobby snuck into the cemetery every night for 14 years to sleep on his deceased master's grave; Lampo became famous for riding the railways of Italy but always returned to the same station; Tricksey offered companionship to the residents of a nursing home; Patsy Ann watched the shores of Alaska and knew before all others that a ship was arriving even though she was stone deaf. These atypical dogs all share the same independent spirit that inspires human admiration and devotion. It Takes a Dog to Raise a Village is a tribute to their spirit and their unusual bonds with the humans who knew them. The text is highlighted by pen and ink drawings.

somewhat interesting, but not as good as expected.......2002-04-24
You will be repeled by some of the subjects in this book and bored by others. This is a collection of essays by different authors, each proceded by a summary. Sometimes the summary would have been enough and the actual essay could have been skipped. I kept "wanting more" for each jerk covered.

Book Description
Just By Accident: Adventures of a Modern Vagabond provides an entertaining and unique look into the life of a modern wilderness vagabond. It is filled with true wilderness adventures encountered by "Backcountry Ben" and allows many of us to catch a glimpse of what lies beyond where most of us will ever go.
While Just By Accident: Adventures of a Modern Vagabond is autobiographical in nature, it is more than just the story of one man's life of travel and adventures in the backcountry. It is also about interpersonal relationships that were formed and fostered by Ben's odyssey in the wilderness.
It is about the forest ranger trekking the backcountry, manning a fire lookout, fighting a forest fire, or writing a recreational plan.
It is about the National Park Service employee riding horseback in one of our beautiful national parks and helping both young and old, novice and experienced, gain a greater enjoyment from the outdoors.
It is about the fish and game people who protect our wildlife from potential poachers; who improve habitat, conduct biological surveys, and collect data, not just on endangered species, but on the myriad of other creatures which inhabit our forests and wildlands.
It is about the entire guiding and tourist industry that brings people to visit our parks and forests, hopefully to return to their urban dwellings with a fresh point of view about nature.

What is the POINT??.......2007-01-03
I have known Ralph for a long time. I have tried in earnest to read and understand what this "book" is all about.. It is a mish-mosh of contradictions!! What is the POINT? ONLY someone who has gone to graduate school would think it has anything to say. God only knows what Ralph is trying to say or convey!! This is a terrible read. Please buy this book and then you too will know what someone who has lost his moral compass writes and thinks is profound. Please buy it!!! and Good Luck!!!
The Conversion of Dietrich Bonhoeffer.......2003-01-11
Ralph Clingan's book illuminates important dimensions of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's conversion, which he attributed to the six months he attended Clayton Powell's Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem. This is the most important theological work of the past fifty years. I based my Reformation Day Sermon on the book. It reads like a conversation, very readable, if compressed. I want to see more detailed treatments of some of Powell's sources than allowed in this small volume.

5-HTP is a naturally derived amino acid that has been shown in comprehensive studies to be safer than prescription drugs for the treatment of insomnia and depression, and can also be used for treating obesity, migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, and premenstrual syndrome. It may prove to be more popular than St. John's wort for the treatment of depression and other serotonin-related conditions, as it's been shown to produce results in as little as two weeks, while the herb may take a month or longer.
Author Michael Murray, N.D., a leading naturopath and coauthor of The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, delves very deeply to explain the hows and whys of depression at the neurotransmitter level, and the illustrations of presynaptic membranes may be a bit much for the lay reader. There are also several sections with intimidating titles along the lines of "Enhancing 5-HTP with Catecholamine Precursors." But the book's comprehensiveness makes up for its occasional denseness. Murray includes enlightening sections on nutrition for peak serotonin synthesis, other complementary herbal supplements, and many online and physical sources for obtaining 5-HTP. --Erica Jorgensen
Book Description
This is the first comprehensive guide to 5-HTP--an amino acid extracted from the seeds of the Griffonia plant--which is available without prescription and has been shown to be safer and more effective than prescription drugs in treating conditions associated with low levels of serotonin.
Our stressful modern lifestyles wreak havoc on our health--we're waging a constant battle to overcome the ill effects of poor diet, lack of exercise, and not enough rest. It may surprise you to learn that scientists have discovered that our stressful lifestyles not only affect our bodies but they adversely affect our brains, too. Specifically, stress, poor diet, and insufficient exercise cause our brains to produce low levels of serotonin, the neurotransmitter that regulates our mood, appetite, and ability to get a good night's sleep. When our brains aren't producing enough serotonin, we may experience depression, suffer from obesity or insomnia, or otherwise function at less than our mental and physical peak.
How do our brains produce serotonin? By synthesizing the essential amino acids we gain from eating a proper diet. But diet alone isn't enough (or millions and millions of us wouldn't suffer the ill effects of low serotonin levels), and scientists and researchers have finally come up with a groundbreaking supplement that will safely and efficiently boost serotonin levels and reduce depression, obesity, insomnia, migraine headaches, and anxiety. That supplement is 5-HTP.
Written by one of the leading naturopathic doctors in the U.S., 5-HTP tells you everything you need to know about this amazing supplement. Citing case histories, scientific studies, and all the available literature on the subject, Dr. Murray introduces us to a supplement that has been widely and effectively used throughout Europe for decades.

AMAZING BOOK.......2007-10-02
This book is so informative. Many people are on prozac and could do this without all the side effects. It truly works!! It is a secret because it is inexpensive and not able to be patented.
MEDECINE IS FINALLY GETTING INTELLIGENT.......2007-07-30
A truly enlightening approach to human well being based on considering the true complexity of the human organism, explaining scientific issues to the level of the non specialist. THe intelligent way to deal with health problems, not just take the newest pill the Chemical companies just launched! An absolute must!
A must read.......2007-04-05
This is a very thorough and informative book on 5HTP. There's alot of info I wasn't aware of and because of it, I've begun to lose weight by following the advice in it. I'm surprised it is not touted as THE way to lose weight to give the bogus weight loss "systems" a run for their money. I like the fact that it lists studies, statistics, it's multiple uses and how it works. I didn't know it double dutied as a safe sleeping aid, for example and now use it as well for that purpose. It's too bad it gets swept under the rug for those that want to use a supplement as safe as 5HTP.
Incomplete and full of inconsistencies.......2003-08-28
While this book presents some interesting and possibly even helpful information, Murray destroys his credibility by his glaring contradictions. For example, on page 33 he says, "5-HTP...cannot be metabolized by the liver into kynurenine." Then on page 238 he says, "...if vitamin B6 levels are low, then more 5-HTP will get converted in the liver into another substance, kynurenine."
Another troubling oversight is that Murray's mention of eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome is very brief, and is in reference only to the L-tryptophan scare of 1989. He never mentions that 5-HTP has also been linked with EMS. He also states that the manufacturing process of 5-HTP prevents any possible contamination, which simply isn't true.
I read this book hoping to find reassuring information about the safety of 5-HTP, but in light of Murray's poor research, inconsistencies and inaccuracies, it's hard to trust any of the information presented.
Don't Worry, Be Happy!.......2002-12-12
I have suffered from mild depression for years. The therapy described in the book has worked like a miracle.

Healthy food for those on the go.......2005-04-10
With everyone in the family 'on the go', it's no wonder small, portable foods and snacking has become so popular: it's just too hard sometimes to sit down and partake of a mean, and eating on the run actually can have its plus side, as doctors advocate eating several smaller meals and snacks over the course of the day for maximum energy. Enter Grazing: Portable Snacks And Finger Foods For Anytime, Anywhere, second in a series of low fat cookbooks and devoted to portable snacks and finger foods. From various dips and chips to BBQ chicken pizza and 'food on a stick' such as satays, there's plenty to inspire in Grazing's examples of healthy food for those on the go.
A MUST HAVE.......2005-03-19
I cannot even begin to tell you how impressed I am with this book!! I love it so much I have bought 6 copies already to give as gifts. The white bean cookies are to die for...seriously. You would NEVER guess they had white beans in them! The dips, the snacks...the coffee cake will make your knees weak, all the while being low in fat. Anytime I need to go to a function where I need to bring something, I get to proudly walk in and announce that MY treat is either low in fat or healthy, and it's not a place of boring vegetables with a crappy dip. Carmelized onion dip, roasted red pepper dip. AND there's even a recipe in there to make your own dipping breads, all low in fat!
You will not be dissapointed.

Customer Reviews:
The answer to "I can't quilt".......2006-11-28
I have students that tell me they can't quilt. When I ask why, they say they don't have the big machine that does the quilting and they don't want to take the time to quilt by hand. Sharon Hultgren has given me the perfect answer to these students! And she has provided sixteen different quilts to satisfy any quilter's taste.
Everyone has heard of Mile-A-Minute Afghans which are done in strips and then sewing together. Ms. Hultgren has done the same for quilting by working in 20" wide strips. This size will allow a home quilter to machine quilt without all the bulk of a completed quilt dragging the quilting process down. Simply create your quilt in 20" sections by making the top and then creating the "sandwich". Once you have the sandwich ready, take it to your machine and quilt the desired design. After completing the number of strips required to make the quilt size you want, sew the strips together.
Ahh but you say what about the seams? This is another creative design Ms. Hultgren has thought of. By making "strip covers" which are sewn in place to cover these seams, she has added yet another design to the quilt. The strips can be part of the top or part of the backing.
The details of the book include five pages of general directions, all the templates, materials list and cutting directions for each quilt as well as step-by-step directions to sew the top together. There are plenty of graphics to help guide you along and colored photos of what the quilt will look like when it is completed. I will be adding MILE-A-MINUTE QUILTS to my teaching schedule.
Interesting but not new.......2006-03-23
I hoped that this book would give me new/better information on the "quilt as you go" technique. Alas, this book has mostly the same ideas and, while it is okay, I got confused about how to "hide" the seams.
Mile-a-Minute Quilts.......2005-08-17
This is a great book for those quilters who want to complete their large quilts at home. The patterns are great and the process and assembly is well explained.

Book Description
Food for Today provides a comprehensive source of food and nutrition information. The text teaches students to make good food choices, use essential food preparation skills and be savvy consumers.
Customer Reviews:
a great text.......2001-10-03
I found this to be a good introductory textbook for a middle/high school age food and nutrition class. The text covers a wide range of topics related to food. One finds chapters on healthy eating and lifestyle, being a vegitarian, how to design a kitchen, and food profiles from around the world. Other chapters even discuss eating etiquette, buying food, and careers in food. The text starts with the basics (this is a whisk...) for the kitchen and for food. One is given profiles of food, nutritional information, and cooking ideas. While it may seem too basic for students who have some knowledge of cooking, it does a good job of introducing it to those who have to knowledge of it at all.
The writing is informative and easy to read. The text is well illustrated with bright drawings and photographs that expand on the written content. I enjoyed the recipes that were chosen for each chapter - they looked fun and doable. In all, this is a well balanced text that fulfills its purpose of presenting food for today.

Japanese Internment Camps Philipines.......2007-07-04
This was an excellent book to inform the reader about two of the several Japanese internment camps they operated during the Philipine occupation during WWII. The book is compeltely the transcribed diary account of a young woman who was interred with her mother. The graphic accounts of the drama of human action under stress is insightful and pulls no punches.
This book is one of several about the Santo Tomas and Bagio camps. There were others, and other books deal with them.
