James Louis Petigru: Southern Conservative, Southern Dissenter
William H. Pease , and Jane H. Pease Manufacturer: University of South Carolina Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1570034915 |
Book Description
In the three decades before the Civil War, James Louis Petigru became the dean of the South Carolina bar and Charleston's leading exponent of the constitutional conservatism that placed federal union above state rights, the economic views that underlay Whig politics, and the liberal vision of individual rights enshrined in the Bill of Rights. In the only modern biography of Petigru, William H. Pease and Jane H. Pease trace the rise to social and professional preeminence that not only placed him among South Carolina's elite but also gave him national visibility. In doing so, they explore the workings of the extended family he headed, the politics of the state he loved, and the intricacies of the legal system he mastered.Central to Petigru's life was the ambiguity into which his competing loyalties plunged him. Loyal to his native state, he was a vocal opponent of its political values. Despite his dissent on the critical issues of nullification and secession, Petigru was elected attorney general, served as a state representative, and codified the state's laws. Born in South Carolina's upcountry to a family of Scots-Irish and Huguenot ancestry, Petrigru achieved such high distinction as an attorney and politician that both Confederates and Yankees eulogized him when he died in Charleston in 1863. Throughout his career, his espousal of private property, individual liberty, the rule of law, and the United States Constitution remained unflinching and gave Petigru the wisdom and assurance to be the state's most notable dissenter.

Young Sidney Hook: Marxist and Pragmatist
Christopher Phelps Manufacturer: University of Michigan Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0472030582 |
Book Description
"This is a provocative, elegantly crafted piece of our intellectual history. Phelps's rediscovery of Hook's radical philosophy is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the fate of the American left."--Michael Kazin, author of The Populist Persuasion: An American History"Like other famous rebels who eventually came home to patriotism and conservatism, Hook's life is one of breathtaking intellectual twists and turns. He occupied, at one time or another, almost every intellectual position available on the left: Leninist, Trotskyist, right-wing Socialist plus several nuances between them. . . . Christopher Phelps, in his persuasive new biography of young Sidney Hook, . . . strives . . . to uncover the young philosopher and activist at the height of his powers. What he discovers is not just a brilliant interpreter of Marx and the Russian Revolution, but a remarkable advocate and practitioner of the Americanization of Marxism."--Jim Gilbert, In These Times
"Sidney Hook's critics and admirers have long held that his pragmatism was incompatible with his early Marxist politics. In this fine book, Christopher Phelps shows why they are wrong and, in the process, offers the first major study of Hook's intellectual development and political activism."--Casey Blake, Washington University (Department of History) or identify as author of Beloved Community: The Cultural Criticism of Randolph Bourne, Van Wyck Brooks, Waldo Frank, and Lewis Mumford
"The very best kind of intellectual biography sheds light not only on the life and ideas of its subject but on a whole tradition of though and a historical epoch. This deeply intelligent and elegantly written book does all those things admirably, and has the added--and rare--virtue of making its own original contribution to the clarification of some thorny issues in social theory, and Marxist theory in particular."--Ellen Meiksins Wood, author of Democracy against Capitalism: Renewing Historical Materialism

Another note from the author.......1999-06-14
I didn't do any of the reviews here. I don't have to. I have my own author section right there at the bottom. Even lists my professional credentials.
Lots of interesting information here..........1999-05-20
Disappointing.......1999-04-10
The author is not a professional and doesn't possess any formal or academic background in the field; he is a hobbyist. This is all well and good, but if I want precise information on how to properly care for my snake, it certainly wouldn't be from another hobbyist.
Overall, the book does provide decent supplemental information from another hobbyist, but it is certainly not up to being one's primary or sole source of information to caring for your snake. In this respect, it is wholly lacking.
If the reader is seeking expert, *qualified* information (and if you genuinely care about your snake), he or she certainly will not find it in this book.

I can't believe that some other readers are reporting this book useless simply because it doesn't tell you exactly how far from your body you should place the baby nor report which brand of this-and-that you should purchase!
This is not an instruction manual because it thoughtfully presumes that the reader will employ some instinct and good sense before sharing her bed.

PRIHTED IK THE UKITED STATKS OF AMERICA Acknowledgment FOR QUITE a number of years members of my family and hundreds of warm personal friends have urged me to write the story of my life. Various reasons have been given, most of which did not appeal to me. I could not see, and do not see now, just why people would be interested in the struggling and somewhat discouraging life that I have lived from boyhood. When I left the United States Senate, this urgency on thfc part of my friends was intensified greatly. Literally thousands of letters came from all parts of the country, a great many of which were written by people who had never seen or heard me. Their ideas regarding me had been formed from what they had read in the magazines and in the newspapers, and in the reports of the various legislative struggles through which I had passed in my forty years service in Congress. Most of these letters were from young people in many cases, just graduating from high schools. Many of them were from students and professors in various colleges and universities scattered from Maine to California and from the Canadian boundary to the Gulf of Mexico. The beautiful, appealing language of so many of the letters made a great impression upon me. The writers told of personal struggles most of them, for an edu cationin which the story of my life would give them encourage ment and greater hope. I was moved strongly by the appeals from the multitude of young people striving so earnestly for an education under the handicap of poverty. Most of them were doing what I had done when young alternately attending classes while the money lasted, and teaching, perhaps, awhile, until their funds were re-MAY28194b ACKNOWLEDGMENT college until their education was com pleted .-t cS j For sik ftdths after my retirement from the United States Sen ate these letters continued to come. Every letter was written from the impulse of some struggling young man or young woman, who was then seeking, under adverse circumstances, to better his or her condition and the conditions of the community in which he or she lived. Although I was impressed deeply, and although I felt honored by the fact that the battles that I had fought were an inspiration to many aspiring young people, I still could not see that a book about myself would accomplish what these friends thought it would, give hope to others faced with similar struggles. While this struggle was going on in my heart, my old friend James E Lawrence of Lincoln, Nebraska, whom I think one of the ablest editorial writers of the country, made several personal visits to my home in McCook, and with an eloquence far above the average possessed by mortal man, urged me to undertake the writing of my autobiography. He promised to help me outlined what seemed to be a necessary work that I should undertake for the bene fit of hundreds of thousands of my countrymen who apparently were appealing to me for help and comfort in a period of great national distress and confusion. I had not kept a diary of my early life, but under the urgent appeals of Mr. Lawrence, and with his assistance, I have undertaken to tell the story truthfully, however doubtful of its value. In a volume of this size, only a part of the many struggles of a rather long and eventful life could be given in detail One of Mr...
