Ernest Hemingway's life was as romantic and exciting as anything in his novels and stories, and this magnificently illustrated large-format volume captures many of his best years. Another 50 full-color photos taken more recently capture the different atmospheres of the writer's several homes.

Great Photo-Bio of Papa's Later Years.......2000-08-29
This coffee table book utilizes wonderful pictures of Ernest Hemingway to show "Papa" is numerous lights. Most pictures center around Hemingway in his years at the Finca Vigia. We see candids of Hemingway aboard the Pilar, or at work in his standing position in his Finca's tower. There are a few questionable facts.(They said that Hemingway's pet "Blackdog" was found around the Finca, when most scholars say he was rescued in Idaho). Still, this book is a must simply for the pictures alone. Out of numerous biographies about Hemingway, Fuentes chooses woderful candids I had never seen, plus wonderful photos of Hemingway's personal possesions, and the Finca as it is today. A must for Hemingway buffs.

A Much-needed Prescription for Modern Medicine.......2001-09-29
This book is, indeed, the second edition of the book originally entitled `The Four Pillars of Healing'. If you read that book, then you have read this one: the only differences (besides the lurid cover) seem to be a couple of new appendices and a change to an existing one, and an extensive questionnaire to discover one's mediators, antecedents, triggers, and effects (terms explained in the book). But, since the first edition came out in 1997 and this one in 1998, the references are still quite current.
Basically, Dr. Galland is making the point that modern medicine has lost its way, and is now doing much damage in some cases, and little good in many others. Of course, this is a point rather stridently made by many authors advancing alternatives to the offerings of the medical establishment, such as meditation, acupuncture, herbal therapies, dietary supplements, and so on. Dr. Galland is sympathetic to many of these alternatives, but what is different about his approach is that he wishes to bring them into the fold, as it were, rather than break from the flock. He was trained as a physician in the usual way, a way he now feels is wrong, that modern medicine is expending much effort to solve the wrong problems.
Healing sick people by observing them, interacting with them, and restoring their balance is the foundation of medical art, but somewhere in the 19th century that approach got displaced when microorganisms began to be associated with disease. It was a short step to claim that these microorganisms "caused" the disease - one germ, one disease. Before long a new type of doctor began to dominate medical care, the "specialist". Specialists were trained to think of a disease as an entity with characteristics that were independent of the person it happened to be afflicting. They specifically rejected the view that individual differences mattered, except in a very superficial way. They were emotionally and intellectually ill-equipped to deal with the messiness of real people whose internal ecologies and external circumstances actually determined whether they got sick, and how it showed up. Many people are infected with the TB bacillus, but only a few get TB. And so for so many other diseases.
Dr. Galland believes that one's diet, exercise, habits, emotional life, physical environment, as well as one's intrinsic makeup and history (even one's developmental history in the womb!) should all be factored into any diagnosis, to interpret symptoms and suggest treatment. This he calls "patient-centered" diagnosis, to distinguish is from current practice, which might be called "disease-centered" diagnosis. He believes that many problems that are today attacked with a variety of over-the-counter and prescription drugs, or, more radically, with surgery, are really the result of imbalances in a person's life. Some of these, such as diet, are rather easily correctable, and simple changes in eating habits, perhaps with a course of diet supplements, can reverse the course of what had been tenacious maladies. Other problems, such as stress or loneliness, can impair immune function, but may sometimes be difficult to correct, intertwined as they are with a person's entire way of life. This book has many case studies that bring home the reality of all these issues, and form an entertaining narrative backbone to the discussion.
In general, the author favors the restoration of balance over bringing in the big medical guns. But sometimes the guns are necessary. It may happen, for example, that a person has allergies or nagging illness that result from an undetected (because unchecked-for) parasite, acquired years earlier. In this case, the doctor might prescribe a course of antibiotics to kill the parasite, along with dietary supplements such as live lactobacillus to restore the intestinal flora the antibiotic will also decimate.
This book gives good guidance in eating, in particular, and suggests methods to avoid the health hazards and toxins endemic to modern life. And for issues he does not discuss in detail he often refers to a book that does, so a reader can learn more if he or she is interested. Dr. Galland has no answers, really, to the social and emotional barrenness that afflicts many of us. (How could he?) But he observes that our health is as much a effect of our emotional well-being as it is of anything physical that happens to us.
What made this book so impressive to me was the references that backed up virtually everything the author said. And these were multiple references in the scientific literature to controlled studies. So the meta-message of this book is that you do not have to check your critical faculties at the door when you go in for an holistic approach to health.

As stated on the inside jacket, the book dates back nearly 100 years; started in 1900. The information and idiosyncracies of the local dialect are treasures alone. The recipes' collection is unrivaled. Must reading for any cuisine historian.

And hysterical if you're reading how to skin the squirrel before you cook it! A fantastic book with authentic Louisiana recipes originally published in 1947. Adapt those recipes that call for cooking on the hearth or for large quantities -- the jumbalaya would feed an army. Great food history as well as great food.

Unassuming and Better than Most.......2002-07-08
This book is the best of the bunch so far. I have read several training books to work with my GSP, and this one has been the most enjoyable and most accurate. The purpose and methods are clear, and the results one should expect are also laid out nicely.
One of the really great things about this book is the unassuming tone of the book. The author is clearly a working man who has responsibilities that include things other than dog training. After reading most other books, I come away feeling guility, as though I am torturing my dog by not giving her enough of my time. This author clearly understands that not every man has several hours per day to dedicate to training. I also like the way the author spells out so many things, but is noticably short-winded on one area: discipline. Too many books I read lean to far to one extreme or the other. Wolters says beat your dog into submission. Tarrant says don't touch your dog, but feel free to hand out emotional abuse as needed. I think effective training lies somewhere in between, and this book lets the reader judge the dog and doesn't spend a lot of time with high handed preaching(personally, I find that grabbing my pup's scruff and giving her a deep-throated growl usually conveys my displeasure more than adequately without needing to hit her as Wolter suggests, or punish her by withholding her food as Tarrant suggests).
Anyway, the techniques are sound, I get the results I desire, and my dog and I have a lot of fun together in the process, so this book gets my vote for the best training manual I've read so far.

I've read every birddog book I could find since getting my Brittany last year. This book is the best. Authors vary widely in their opinions on proper dog training and a lot of the advice out there is plain wrong. Based upon my experience, Spencer's advice is right on target. What's even better, the clear and concise writing in this book makes it a very easy to follow guide. The first 98 pages provide an overview of birddog hunting in the U.S., and descriptions of 10 birddog breeds. For the next 146 pages, every sentence explicitly helps you understand the how and why of each aspect of training from puppyhood to the dog's first season afield.

I have read many books on training pointing dogs, and have trained with some very fine trainers in the past. While I do not agree with all the training techniques (such as the author's mannor of progressing from point, to steady to wing and shot), I found other useful information in every chapter. I was particularly interested in how the author described the way various breeds react to different training - for example, a Brittany will generally respond to a very soft taining hand and lots of praise; while a German Shorthair will (generally) respond to a stronger hand with less praise. This is important to me as I'm about to start with a GSP, having trained primarily Brittanies in the past. Another aspect of this book which I found both refreshing and educational, was that the author consulted with various professional trainers - both to provide their perspective of the breed they work with, and to give the reader other opinions. Most dog books give the reader only the author's opinion, and as anyone who trains dogs knows, opinions vary. This book has earned a place on my shelf next to what I consider to be the best of the best of gun dog training books. Also, it is an entertaining read.

This book contains most of the beadweaving techniques that I've ever heard about as well as how to combine stitches. While I would call it a reference book, for the most part, it has lots of projects as well. I haven't made any of the projects to date but think the instructions are excellent. If you need to know how to switch stitches in your off-loom work.........you won't be unhappy if you purchase this book.
2nd Best Beading Book.......2007-07-10
I've only found 1 other bead weaving book as good as this one and it's also by Carol Wilcox Wells, "The Art and Elegance of Beadweaving". This one has great diagrams, guidance on what beads and colors to use, and a beautiful gallery of projects to do and ones to be inspired by. It is also a great buy in paperback. My advice is buy both of her books.

I love the book. It has lots of beautiful inspiring pieces. It's more of a book for intermediate and advanced beaders than beginners in my opinion, but that doesn't mean a beginner wouldn't get something out of purchasing it. I retun to the book over and over again for helpful tips and tricks and inspiration. I highly recommend it.

I've had "10,000 Garden questions answered by 20 experts" for over 15 years. It is a great all round reference for almost any type of plant in your garden - shrubs, perennials, annuals, groundcovers, etc.
The question and answer format is useful, since the questions cover most of the important facts about each type of plant - how much sun, what kind of soil, how much water, when and how to prune. There are chapters on home vegetable gardens, home ground fruits, house plants, plant troubles and their control, weeds, and regional garden problems.
The index is excellent, so the reader can find information about plants in different chapters - soils and fertilizers, landscaping,
I've rarely failed to find useful information in this book about any kind of annual, biennial, perennial, tree, shrub, or vine. Most of the culitivars discussed in the book are no longer available, as the book was originally published in 1946. Aside from that, plants don't change, so this is still a very valuable reference.

This review is based on the two books I own. 10,000 Garden Questions, Answered By 20 Experts, Volume 1, Third Edition 1974. 10,000 Garden Questions, Answered By 20 Experts, Volume 2, Third Edition 1974. These books I own may be old but the 10,000 questions are real and the answers they provide are still useful and very much needed. Actually the volume contains 13,000 questions all answered by twenty horticultural authorities. Sections include: Soils and Fertilizers, Planning and Landscaping,Ornamental Plants and Their Culture, Trees, Shrubs, and Vines, Bulbs, Tubers and Corms, Roses, Perennials, Annuals and Biennials, Lawns and Turf Areas,The Home Vegetable garden, Home-Grown Fruits, House Plants, Plant troubles and Their Control, Weeds and Regional Garden Problems. I've referred to these books many times when I was thinking of growing Pumpkin or Corn. Even Radishes and Lettuce. How about those nice Ladybugs!

Best Garden Book Ever.......2000-11-11
I purchased this book 4 years ago and since then I have hardly used the books I had previously. This book covers everything from planning to troubleshooting problems. It has an excellent glossary that makes it very easy to find exactly what you are looking for. It has information from the very basic to professional without being boring. If I could have only one book on gardening this would be it. Since it is out of print my family always calls me for answers from it on their gardening problems. I hope it will be reprinted.

Whether you buy this book new or used...or borrow it from the library, just read it. You will be pleasantly surprised at how much more pleasant the prospect and actual raising of your teen/s can be.
Just realizing no matter what you do or don't do, they still have minds of their own...is priceless.
Any of his books has the same basic information and applies to all ages...yes, even grown children, spouses, friends, relatives, coworkers, and yourself.
This one simply has more age specific examples of behavior/consequences. The book more than pays for itself.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It is a no-nonsense guide to effective but fair discipline. The humorous writing style also helps make it an entertaining read. I have already begun to adjust my attitude in approaching my 13 year old, and the results are good. I could live without the Christian references in the book, but the author does give a nod to other beliefs as well.

wish I'd known about this book when my teens were just entering the teen years, but better late than never! john's advice is practical and common sense and I've incorporated a lot of his ideas into raising my younger children as well. I've been recommending this book to everyone I know with teens and have gone back and reread my highlighted sections again and again!
Teen Proofing Fostering Responsible Decision Making in Your Teenager.......2006-11-06
This is a fabulous book for any parent that has newly entered into that area of life with a "tweenager". We had been battling with our son daily to the point of sheer awfulness!!!! This book gave such an insite as to what was happening with him and us. We sheepishly realized we were micro-managing him and things could be different with a few changes.
I found it truly usable info in a real life situation. I would highly recommned it.

As a fan of historical fiction, I was greatly pleased to come across this book of historical...history? *grin* This autobiography is well written and compelling. Having lived in Indonesia for a number of years (and having visited Bali), I found it really fascinating. I think anyone would enjoy it, though. It's a great way to familiarize yourself with world history.

Very good book. Tells a fascinating story about the author's life in Indonesia. Brave lady who was willing to risk everything for all she believed in.Vivid picture of Bali and the situation there, and the people and culture.

I met K'tut on a freighter headed for Southeast Asia, in 1969. First of all I thought she was a little weird..starting with the name. Long story short. She wasn't weird. Very interesting and a lot of fun. We became good friends and spent much time together. She introduced me to many of her good friends, and I found her to be one of the most intriguing people I've ever met. She gave me a copy of Revolt in Paradise and wrote some very nice dedacatory things on the fly-leaf. The book is wonderful, warm, exciting & scary and I think it would make a terrific film. Shirley Mac Laine was her choice...back then. ?????
I was thinking about her and decided to Google her and here we are. Now I know. I wish she could Google me. We had some good times together.
From Bali to Surabaya..........2001-02-26
This is a must read for anyone interested in Indonesian contemporary history and society. It is the story of the American woman who established the first hotel in Bali, later in life became known as the revolutionary "Surabaya Sue" and who died abroad forgotten by most. Her fabulous novel "Revolt in Paradise" was never made into a film, much to her frustration. Lindsey has done a fantastic job researching the archives and interviewing the old and somewhat bitter lady.
