Book Description

Admiral of Fleet Lord Lewin, although best known as Chief of Defense Staff during the Falklands conflict, is the most important and influential figure in the Royal Navy's postwar history. Written by a recognized expert in British naval affairs who received complete and exclusive access to Lord Lewin's papers, this authorized biography lays open the workings of Whitehall and the defense establishment, and describes Lewin's critical role in determining policy--including the decision to proceed with the Trident and the Falklands War.

4 out of 5 stars An appreciation of the life of Lord Lewin........2001-07-03

A must read for those who are interested in the Royal Navy. Also a must read for those who wish to know about the Falklands War. Lord Lewin was chief of defence staff for the Falklands war, thus the most influential military mind controlling the status of the war and advising Mrs. Thatcher.

        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Low on substance.......2007-08-19

The reviews for this book are so overwhelmingly positive, I figured it *must* be good. Bad assumption! I gleaned very little usable information from this book. The author uses far too much space defining terms, relating her own experiences, and trying to be cute.

Even worse, as another reviewer noted, the author's tone is a bit condescending. Despite her purported years of experience as a professional organizer, she doesn't seem to have a good handle on what causes people to develop clutter problems. Her extensive use of coined words is annoying. The material is poorly organized, jumping around at times. Also, the writing drags in places; it could have used a more thorough editing. Overall, the writing and material presented is of low quality.

For example, in a chapter on how to clear out sentimental clutter, the author's advice can be distilled into one largely unhelpful sentence, "Save only objects that evoke pleasant or poignant feelings; don't keep anything that makes you feel stressed or upset." Okay, that makes sense, but is that really going to do me any good? I could have used suggestions on how to mentally unhook objects from memories. Then the author goes on to introduce terms such as "clutterabilia" and "memorabiliac." (And she's just getting started! Watch out for "paperosis" and "redundabundance.") Is having a coined word going to solve anything?

In dealing with the fear of getting rid of something and then regretting it, the author admonishes, "If you do find yourself grieving over the loss of something that was never alive to begin with, you need more help than I can give you, and I urge you to seek counseling." At this point, I think she has dismissed most of her readers. She continues without compassion, "Your regrets are...a poor excuse for you to keep hanging onto clutter." Tough love?

Some people might find the author's tone helpful, but I was totally put off by it. I would recommend a thorough perusal of the excerpt available online before investing in this book. It should have been a giveaway to me that so many copies are available used. Maybe the sellers took the author's suggestion to only hold onto things that are useful.

4 out of 5 stars IMPORTANT BOOK GREAT IDEAS. .......2005-10-22

5 out of 5 stars Letting go is hard to do...........2003-08-19

Conquer your clutter. Stop being a slave to your stuff. Understand why it's so hard to get rid of things.

What would your life be like if you could accomplish these three things? How much happier would you be? How much more peaceful would your life be?

Author Harriet Schechter gives you a step-by-step solution in her book, Let Go of Clutter.

In the first chapter, Why Letting Go is So Hard to Do, Schechter explains why we may be biologically programmed to accumulate, why the fear of regret keeps us from discarding stuff, and how society encourages us to gather more and more.

Chapter 4, Purging Paper and Preventing Piles, is another favorite chapter. The author walks us through the method she uses with her clients to quickly sort and purge paper piles. She recommends a File Index, and shows you how to set it up for your household.

The last part of the book looks to the future and explains how to keep your home clean once you've decluttered it.

This book is filled with lots of fill-in-the-blank forms and step-by-step pathways to take you from clutter-filled to clutter-free.

If your clutter is taking over and you've reached the end of your rope with no idea where to start, check out Let Go of Clutter.

        5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!.......2003-04-27

Got a kid, then you understand the true meaning of the word pandemonium. I bought it for the wife hoping we could figure out how to clean up after "the kid" our 3 y/o son, and organize her accumilated junk(wife's a pack rat). Needless to say, she nor i read it through to the end, but the bit i read was an interesting approach. I still trip over tonka trucks & lego blocks, the insects need a treadmill and the newspaper pile is now a permanent corner structure. Maybe one day I'll finish the book....its a step in the right direction. Buy it.

Savory Spaghetti Carbonara tossed with bits of pancetta, Spinach Lasagna layered with a long-simmered ragù, Gnocchi Gratin crowned with cheese and bread crumbs, sweet-and-spicy Thai noodles -- these are among the classic pasta, noodle, and dumpling recipes you will soon master with this book.

Williams-Sonoma Mastering Pasta, Noodles & Dumplings is a complete cooking course in a single volume. The opening describes the different types of fresh and dried pastas, dumplings, and Asian noodles available and the ingredients used to make them. You will also learn how to cook, season, and serve pasta, from reading your mise en place to adding restaurant-style finishing touches.

Basic recipes and key techniques then illustrate dozens indispensable culinary building blocks, such as how to judge when a pasta dough is mixed just right or how to dice an onion with ease. Troubleshooting tips show you what can go wrong and how to fix it without having to start all over again. Next the master recipes lead you step-by-step, with friendly text and instructive photographs, through every stage of preparation. These recipes include helpful advice other cookbooks assume you already know, and explain how to taste and season a dish as you go -- one of the most valuable kitchen secrets you can learn. The shorter recipes and variations in each chapter encourage you to continue practicing your newfound skills, building your repertory and your confidence at the same time. Finally, a guide to equipment and a glossary of ingredients round out your comprehensive pasta-making course.

In these pages, you will discover more than fifty classic recipes that tell you, in both pictures and words, how every dish you make should look and taste from beginning to end. Whether you are an aspiring novice or an accomplished home cook, Mastering Pasta, Noodles, and Dumplings is an invaluable source for the tricks, tips, and insider knowledge that, until now, you could learn only in cooking class.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely a book for beginners.......2006-04-19

This review is written from the perspective of a serious home cook that has been studying cooking for 25 years and concentrating on Italian cooking for the last 10 years.

This book is targeted to beginning pasta makers. If you are a skilled pasta maker, there is nothing new in this book. However, if you are new to pasta this book is well done. The directions are well written and the photos of various stages of pasta production as also well done.

The book does an excellent job of telling you which shape of noodle goes best with a given sauce. This is something that the Italians take for granted that most Americans have not been taught.

I also thought the book did a nice job of teaching the reader how to make orecchiette, cavatelli, and ravioli.

If you are new to pasta making this is an excellent primer.

            1 out of 5 stars Worthless book, and I am a fool!!!.......2005-11-14

My compliments to the photographer, but the content of this book is mighty thin. I thought I had finally found a book that would go beyond the basic pasta techniques and that would tell how to make noodles and dumplings. Burn my soul! This book has the basic pasta recipe along with a few recipes for sauces and such. There is nothing in this book that you won't find in a comprehensive cookbook like Betty Crocker. Spaetzle isn't even mentioned! Save your money, friends. Or wait a year until they sell the remainders for 50 cents.

              Book Description

About 15 years ago, Marilyn Raff began transforming her ordinary suburban yard into a garden full of delights. It was a gradual process at first, since Marilyn had no real experience of gardening and thought that the best thing to do with her new expanse of yard was to plant grass. Since that time, she and her garden have come a long way.

In The Intuitive Gardener, you'll learn how to see and imagine the garden of your dreams from one who has taken this journey herself. With a strong emphasis on intuition rather than rules, Raff helps gardeners of all abilities learn to trust their creative choices, rather than being encumbered by the opinions of experts. As she points out, gardening isn't just about planting, digging, and hauling: "It's mainly about the beauty we are creating when plants are brought together."

As Raff's garden has evolved, and as she has built her career as a garden designer, she has found a way to teach others to discover and follow their own internal feelings of what is "right" in their gardens. Within the pages of The Intuitive Gardener, discover the freedom to explore "unlimited possibilities in the garden once distinctive elements--rocks, paths, flowers--are put together with imagination and intuition." And learn how mistakes can almost always be overcome because "practically anything can be changed or moved."

              2 out of 5 stars ungrateful.......2007-06-08

This book made me quite angry. In the most general critique, the writing was mediocre. On the subject, the author complained throughout the book and was incredible ungrateful. For someone who was provided with two healthy twins on her first round if IVF, she had many things to complain of including the comment "I will always resent my children being born via IVF." I purchased this book as a resource and a means to help me through the choice of IVF and instead found a woman who cannot count her blessings and fails to see the beauty in what she and medical science has given her.

3 out of 5 stars Author seems bitter about her experience..........2006-06-04

I liked the idea that this book would deal with the emotional side of IVF, but the ending was just too bitter and pessimistic for me. It seems the author blames every problem with her pregnancy and babies to IVF just because she can't get over the fact that they were technically conceived outside her body. Even though one should be aware of all the difficulties of this procedure, I prefer to read something more optimistic since I am about to start this process myself and I need all the hope that I can take.

              5 out of 5 stars gotta-to-get-it IVF book!.......2005-10-28

I've now read several books on IVF and this one stood out to me on a really personal level. I'm pretty well informed already on all the medical info and statistics, but this book gave me a real understanding of the emotions and the real-life situations involved in doing IVF. The author gives several different stories of couples and while none of them was my exact situation, they all touched on some of the same feelings I've had and not only offered good advice, but helped me to feel like I'm not alone. I think it was beautifully written as well, and the author, while tackling a tough subject, made me laugh. I'd recommend it if you're thinking about IVF, going through it, or even if you're trying to understand what a friend is going through.

4 out of 5 stars Good book when you need to hear the personal side of IVF.......2005-10-27

This book made me realize there is SO much more to IVF than just the procedure. My husband and I have just started down the road of IVF and by the personal accounts in the book I do feel better prepared. I never took into account all the emotions we will have to deal with on matters such as the embryo being formed outside my body. It is always good to know someone else's story who has walked in your shoes, so even the fears of a mix-up in the lab or even how an IVF mother feels more "delicate" during the start of her pregnancy, was a comfort to read.
I like that the book is written about personal experiences, but like others have said it was a little hard to follow when word for word was written from conversations. Sometimes the people's thoughts jumped around so it left the reader to fill in the blanks.
I really liked the book, but found the ending to be very disappointing. The author was still dealing with the emotional side of IVF when the book was written. So the last part of the book is of her negative thoughts. Even though I flew through the book it took me a couple days to finish the last chapter simply because I found it to be a downer compared to every chapter before it.
I am glad I bought the book and would do so again even knowing how it ends.

              1 out of 5 stars Personal Opinion.......2005-10-23

I have read many books on infertility and IVF. I found this one to be poorly written. The author uses interviews with infertile couples attempting IVF. She writes word for word from their interviews. It is confusing as she jumps back and forth between their stories and her own. The writer also has a very negative attitude toward IVF even though the process helped her to have healthy twins. It seems she is trying to work out her insecurities and doubts through her writing. As I am still pursuing parenthood, it was difficult to read a "poor me" story from a woman who seems to regret IVF even though it worked a miracle times two for her.

                      5 out of 5 stars Some things I remember.......2003-04-30

Mr. Harbin writes recollections of his life with a subtle humor. His memories cover much of the 1900's including the depression, various wars, and ending with the World Trade Center disaster. I was inspired by his dedication to education and his obvious love for his family. It is refreshing to read an autobiography that is positive and without the normal excuses for the person's shortcomings. What appears to be written as a gift for a grandchild is interesting to anyone that may happen to read it. I hope this book inspires others to write their memories for their families so all these memories are not lost in time. These are experiences that cannot be found in history books.

                        5 out of 5 stars Well Researched.......2005-07-06

This book is well written and quite well documented. It contains some of the best endnotes I've seen in a long time. The author drew from several other diaries (often not published) to present a more well rounded view often elaborating in the chapter endnotes. My only complaint is that the notes were presented at the end of the chapter instead of as page footnotes. I was constantly flipping pages to access the notes as I read. Overall an interesting book to anyone fascinated with WWII.

                        5 out of 5 stars Rising Sun.......2004-01-24

This book kept me glued to the page. A gripping account of a teenager stuck in a concentration camp without having done anything wrong. A surprising lack of rancor, the author gives a picture of the good and bad in the people on both sides of the conflict. Also unusual are the admissions of less than perfect actions on his own part. It almost made me feel like I had been there.
