Boring trivia.......2000-10-15
I also have Elting's translation, which is better than Napier's, but the question that comes to mind is why did Elting bother to translate this rambling, disjointed and trivial work, when a translation already existed? Blaze's banter and anecdotes often refer to periods prior to 1789. In all the work there is but one interesting uniform detail: captains & field officers of the Young Guard flanker regiments wore their former blue Old Guard uniforms while the rest wore green. I would go into more detail but my 1,000 word review seems to be limited to 1,000 letters.
La Vie Militaire.......2000-07-03
This is one of the best memoirs of the Napoleonic period. It is lively, interesting, packed full of information by an officer who had service on the staff as well as on the line.
Blaze saw and did a lot. His stories ring true, especially if yu've been in the service for over twenty minutes. His personality sketches are riveting, having seen both Davout and Dorsenne, among others, and he is blunt, factual, and wonderfully descriptive. This book is a definite must for any enthusiast or historian.
I would recommend, however, the edition translated by Colonel John Elting, as it is more complete, and edited much better, as well as having explanations for the military slang of the period which is hard to translate. Additionally, Colonel Elting unearthed some new information on Blaze himself which is very eye-opening.
All in all a very enjoyable book, and a great help in understanding the men, and women, who followed the Grande Armee and its terrible Emperor to fight the kings across the length and breadth of Europe.
Very enjoyable reading........1998-05-27
Blaze has a wonderful story telling style.

As a physician considering offering PT services,I found this book excellent. Everything from ICD-9 to CPT crosswalks, to negotiating with managed care, to courting a referring doctor is covered here. Good general primer on running any type of healthcare practice.
awesome book.......2007-03-08
Great book. Simple to read yet has all kinds of great tips. HIghly recommend.
Great book!.......2007-01-22
I have thoroughly enjoyed and read this wonderful masterpiece of a how-to-book! A great buy for anyone interested in starting and managing their own physical therapy practice.

Customer Reviews:
Impressive........2007-06-17
The Accidental Vegan is one of the best vegan cookbooks that I have encountered thus far. The meals offered are simple, and delicious. The ingredients are listed in a green box for easy decifering. The directions are simple and to the point.
I was really impressed with the Pad Thai. Devra Gartnenstein managed to make a wonderful Thai dish without the Yucky! fish sauce.
All in all, you can never have enough vegan cookbooks, and this one is a grand addition to my collection.
Honey is not vegan!.......2007-03-04
I was dissaponted that several of the recipes in this cookbook contain honey, a non-vegan item. Gartenstein is not vegan herself, and I think this shows...many of her recipes are the kind fo rabbit food omnivores think us vegan force outselves to eat. I also noticed that fruits and vegetables don't play a major role in most of the recipes (they focus more on grains), and the volume is poorly indexed.
New to Vegan'ism'.......2006-09-04
I have never been a 'cookbook' kind of cook....most overwhelm me. For years, I have prepared tasty, low-fat, healthy meals just by experimenting. I never use salt, either. However, I got into a rut and felt my cooking needed an overhaul. My neighbor lent me The Accidental Vegan, and I love it! I find that when you cook with fresh ingredients, however, you DO have to go shopping more often, which can be tiresome. Her recipes, for me, are VERY simple (the ingredients might not be recognizable, so you have to shop at Whole Foods, or smaller more ethnic-type markets, as she mentions in her book). Yes, eating healthier costs more, but worth your while. Even if you can't do it every day, treat yourself to this book and one recipe each week.......you'll get hooked!
Still lovin it!.......2006-09-01
After 5 years this one still ranks high on my list. The recipes are easy, tasty and not loaded with sugar. There are many Vegan Cookbooks that require too much time, ingredients, sugar and refined carbs. I say, leave those on the shelves and take a chance on this one.
A Most Frustrating Experience.......2005-05-03
Ms. Gartensetin gives incomplete directions for cooking. She gives vague instructions on purpose, stating in her introduction, "I figured these recipes would be more useful if I let you plan some things for yourself, and develop your own system."
Useful? It is not useful to spend an hour standing over a stove stirring something, "until it thickens" not sure if the stove is at the right setting because the recipe did not specify a cooking time or heat.
I am not a vegetarian, but I am trying to make better choices for my health, for the sake of the animals and our planet. Ms. Gartenstein's book (with many time consuming recipes) only made me long for more familiar foods that do not require so much strategy and are not such a hassle to prepare.
I think if some one is an experienced or gourmet who can figure these things out they will be okay. Also, if a person doesn't work outside the home, he/she has time to "develop a system." These types of people will probably enjoy the book. But if you are not very experienced, and prefer foods that are simpler to prepare, her book will be VERY disappointing.

Great reading and project inspiration.......2007-01-10
Easy to follow directions and good illustrations help make this book a good tool for those who already have some experience with machine quilting. It is not a "primer" for those who are at the novice stages of machine quilting. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and will certainly have a place for it in my quilting books library, but it will take a bit more time for it to have any practical use for me.
It was exciting to see all of the heirloom quality projects that are possible with machine quilting! It will certainly provide incentive and inspiration for future projects.

Last year in his series.......2007-02-24
Patrick O'Kelley seems to have covered every Revolutionary War Battle and Skirmish for 1782 for N.C. & S.C. in this book. He has done the same for 1771-1779, 1780 & 1781 in his other books. These are a must have for the Revolutionary War enthusiast or researcher.
Book Description
In Nothing but Blood and Slaughter, Volume Two, the British had conquered Georgia and South Carolina, and had turned their attentions towards North Carolina. By 1781 the British government thought that the war in America was all but over and they could now focus on France and Spain. Though the war had turned against the Patriots, they were not finished. The British had all but won the war in the colonies, but they had not won the peace.
Many of Lord Charles Cornwallis' army had been taken prisoner at King's Mountain in 1780. Cornwallis knew that if he marched into North Carolina the supply lines to his army would be spread thin and Patriot guerillas would be able to strike at will. There was a possibility that he could be cut off from any support and destroyed. However Cornwallis also knew that to destroy the enemy he had to carry the war to them. He could not do this in South Carolina. Against orders from his commander in New York City Cornwallis decided to carry the war into North Carolina.
In Nothing but Blood and Slaughter, Volume Three, the war continues its bloody course. The Revolutionary War was decided in the forests and plowed fields of the South. Huge lumbering armies brought the war into the low country and the piedmont while roving bands of guerillas harassed each other. Americans fought Americans in a bloody civil war. Past grievances against neighbors were paid with blood and fire by the partisans of both sides.
Volume Three is the third volume in a series of four that attempts to list every single military action, no matter how small, in the Carolinas and the Savannah River region of Georgia.
Customer Reviews:
Yet another first class book by O'Kelley.......2007-02-24
Patrick O'Kelley seems to have covered every Revolutionary War Battle and Skirmish for 1781 for N.C. & S.C. in this book. He has done the same for 1771-1779, 1780 & 1782 in his other books. These are a must have for the Revolutionary War enthusiast or researcher. Most of the South Carolina Battles are in this book.
Nothing but Blood and Slaughter - Vol III.......2005-06-19
As with his first two volumes, O'Kelley continues with chronological briefings of all skirmishes and battles in the Carolinas and Georgia, this volume covering the year 1781. Nearly all of the reports include the order of battle and commanders for both sides, with the outcome where known reported in terms of causualities (killed, wounded, captured and missing) as well as overall victor and significance of the fight.
The value of O'Kelley's book are the narrative reports of skirmishes and small encounters as well as the major battles of Cowpens and Guilford Courthouse. The narratives are concise, but usually with enough detail to get more than a flavor of the actions and personality of the leaders, particularly in the bloody clashes between Whig and Tory partisan bands, many of which gave no quarter as some clashes were more for revenge than for political or military gain. "Nothing but Blood and Slaughter" demonstrates that nowhere in the colonies was the fighting so extensive, so personal, so destructive as in the Carolinas.
All of the "Nothing but Blood and Slaughter" volumes are essential for any student of the American Revolutionary war and/or for students unconventional warfare.
O'Kelley is a retired Special Forces Master combat veteran and an avid participant in Revolutionary War recreations, and with those experiences provides an insight most historians miss. His research is extensive, with much of the incidents he reports about being ignored in the history books. He does an excellent job of separating myth from fact. For example, many believe the Revolutionary War ended with the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. Not so. O'Kelley is now working on a fourth volume, reporting on incidents of warefare in 1782 and beyond.
The only negatives are more of a nuisance rather than flaws in reporting. Volume III is riddled with typos and, as in Volumes I and II, he uses endnotes rather than footnotes, requiring the reader to constantly be thumbing back and fourth. However the end notes are extensive, often more enlightening, adding to the authenticity of O'Kelley's exceptional work.

Patrick O'Kelley covers it all.......2007-02-24
Patrick O'Kelley seems to have covered every Revolutionary War Battle and Skirmish during 1771-1779 for N.C & S.C. in this book. He has done the same for 1780, 1781 & 1782 in his other books. These are a must have for the Revolutionary War enthusiast or researcher.
he made sense out of disorder.......2004-07-30
The book is written in a terse military style, which only adds to the book. It lists every land, naval, battle or skirmish. I could never make any sense of the fuss about the savage fighting in the Carolinas, until I read this book. I can hardly wait to see what happens to Lord Cornwallis's army when he invades the Carolinas in the following volumes. It is a gold mine of Militia unit information.

Excellent reference tool.......2004-06-30
While the title might sound like a late night movie, it is a statement from the famous Quaker General, Nathaniel Green, describing the fighting in the Southern Campaign. This is not a book that you take home for a good read, but a well-documented reference you keep as a handy tool. If you had ancestors that participated in the battles in Georgia or South Carolina you will find this a useful book. The author has started with the Battle of Alamance, North Carolina, that actually preceded the Revolutionary War in 1771 and ends with the failed attempt by the Patriots and French to retake Savannah, GA, in 1779. Considered the first volume of three Mr. O'Kelley plans to write, every skirmish, sea battle and engagement that is known is included with an order of battle format. This book lists the units that participated, key leaders, casualties and overview of the engagements. This is an excellent tool for compatriots who are doing history programs for local schools.
The best I have ever read.......2004-02-20
I bought this book since I was interested in the Revolutionary War in the South. I know of the War Between the States, but I wanted to know more about what came before. Not many books have much in them about the Southern campaign. They only mention Yorktown, or Cowpens. However this book contains everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, about the war in the South. It is not just North and South Carolina, but Georgia too. It is incredibly detailed and it seems that most of the sources are from primary account. This is a huge project that Patrick O'Kelley has tried to put on paper. There will be more volumes, and I can't wait until the next. The book is easy to read and explains what happened in a way that makes the story flow smoothly. I highly recommend it!

Book Description
Ruth Gunter Mitchell's Nothing but the Blood is a hard-hitting yet spiritually uplifting story of one woman's wanton and self-destructive life in the Deep South of America, as told through her eyes and those of other women.
Customer Reviews:
A dark journey.......2006-07-31
This book illuminates the life of someone who seems evil for evil's sake. That's at first glance. While no excuses are offered by the author or the character for the deeds done, layer after layer of this mean-spirited woman are removed until we see into the dark depths of her, and learn what she harbors there. Told in three points of view, the first two take us to the edge of the precipice while the third plunges us headlong into the hard facts of life. Skillfully handled by Mrs. Mitchell, the characters live on the page and in our minds long after the last page is turned. Aunt Inny is a character worth getting to know, and one to be reckoned with. I look forward to other works by this new author.
Great!.......2006-05-02
My dad saw in the newspaper that a teacher from Wellborn had written a book and immediately ordered it. I was so excited when I found out Mrs Mitchell (one of my favorite teachers) had written it.
It is a Great Book and noone deserves praise more that Ruth Mitchell. She took time with us in High School and I'm sure most would agree that she is a favorite among all of her past students.
Thank you Mrs Mitchell for everything you did for all of us and for writing such a great book!
excellent.......2006-03-16
this book was one of the best that i have ever read. i'm from anniston, alabama. reading the book and picturing in my mind where things took place. i really enjoyed reading the book. Mrs. Mitchell was my high school english teacher. she was a very excellent teacher and she is an excellent writer. Hope she'll write more.
Top-of-the-line author.......2006-01-31
Ruth Gunter Mitchell is genius in her storytelling. This is a book you'll not want to put down. Aunt Inny, the main character, is a complicated soul, indeed. I dare say she may remind us of someone we've each known who confused, dismayed and disappointed us. Yet, despite their serious shortcomings, we loved them, always hoping to understand what makes them act the way they do. This is a book you'll find yourself thinking about long after you've put it down. Count Ruth Gunter Mitchell among the South's finest writers!
What a story. Thanks for sharing it with us.......2006-01-23
True Southern fiction at its best. Think Ann Rivers Siddons with a little Fanny Flagg thrown in for good measure. Humorous while at the same time endearing. Everyone with a connetion to the south will see someone from their own family within the story. Terrific story, endearing characters, and a perfect description of the "old South." I can't wait for another one. Thanks Ruth Ann for a great read.

Customer Reviews:
Very Insightful.......2002-06-18
I felt this book gave me a better understanding of a critical period in American history. It is not typical of a lot of POW narratives I have read. The author provides an interesting look at pre-war military life in the Philippines. He also looks at questions surrounding the surrender of American and Filipino forces to the Japanese. I found his discriptions of POW life very insightful. They poignantly demonstrate what can happen to military personnel when there is an absence of leadership and discipline.
It is time for Japan to apologize says a Californian.......2002-03-27
Major Gordon's experiences accurate reflect those of thousands of his fellow prisoners of the Japanese. The nation owes a debt to Major Gordon, not just for his service, but for his willingness the recall the unending horror and write it DOWN!
Typically, post war records are replete with errors and it is only through thoughtful histories such as Gordon's can the next generation understand what price was paid for the freedom of the world.
Sadly, today we no longer teach the history of World War II. Ask any crowd of college kids and less than 5% would recognize the names of Bataan and Corregidor. Yet these same students can tell you every detail about the nasty twelve months of the "McCarthy Era" and, from their history text books, the life story of the "Beetles." The "Quislings" remain in control of our colleges and media. No one is ever taught about the Kamikazes of Japan and how the terrorists who attack today are absolutely the same enemy.
"Horyo" is a worthy addition for any serious student of World War II. Only with books like this, can the public ever understand why Japan owes the world an apology and reparation to its victims. Next to the Japanese, the Nazis appear angelic.
LEARN YOUR TRUE HISTORY AMERICA.......2001-10-05
This heartbreaking book must be read with a half-decent grasp of the truth of American history. Otherwise, Gordon's story becomes trivialised. Out of context, it loses its meaning. Just another war story.
America is at an historical crossroads. More than ever, this arrogant, over-confident, money-obsessed, chronically ignorant, 'super'power needs to face the nasty FACTS of its own Hollywood-distorted history. Acting on unfathomable ignorance, its media-induced citizens can endorse yet another monumental politico-military blunder. This time, one too many perhaps!
The bigger they are, the harder they fall!
Bataan & Corregidor were purely American/MacArthur disasters. A truly hideous episode, swept under the rug. There is nothing to romanticise or commercialise. There is no saving grace, just total & utter disgrace - so Hollywood & the Spielberg's of this world, steer well clear of it; preferring to fantasize that Americans won WWII, when it was really won by the Russians at Stalingrad!, more than anyone.
O dear, that won't go down well in the Pentagon, will it? Is that the FBI I hear tapping my phone?
The average American imagines that 'Americans' won the Revolutionary War, led by Geo. Washington. But it was France who financed it and the French navy, more than anyone, that defeated the British monarchists. The American colonists/Congress neither financed nor supported the war in any heroic sense, at all. In fact their neglect of Washington & his tatterdemalion 'army' was a disgrace! From Chesapeake to Corregidor is not such an unimaginable leap in the context of American military history.
After the disgrace of Bataan & Corregidor (covered up), nevermind the fright of Pearl Harbour (now romanticised), the Americans did wage the Pacific War, and won decisively, only because of the Atomic Bomb, courtesy of scientists fleeing Hitler + a ruthless Truman, who DID grasp American military history as few Presidents have, and quit while he was ahead - ignoring MacArthur! Then came the utter stupidity and failure of Korea.
Do these people never learn?
Then the infamous, unforgiveable Vietnam War. A purely American war, with catastrophic results. Kennedy/Johnson/Nixon were all historically clueless. Read McNamara to find out how totally incompetent the American politicians & military were, once again.
Before outraged Americans follow Messrs Bush, Cheney, Rumfeldt and Powell's yahoo-ing posse too enthusiastically, into yet another ambush, under the banner of a "World-wide War against Terrorism", they would be wise to read up on the history of their own military prowess. We will avert our gaze from the futility of "Desert Storm" which was little more than a bloated fart against the winds of history, as we can now see.
Vast armies and unlimited weaponry do not a victory make.
The dwindling percentage of Americans who vote, urgently need to unglue themselves from their TV screens and read up on their real history, which is inglorious to say the least. Major Gordon's story is a pretty decent place to begin their long overdue education. It's an honest tale, rather well told, about an ugly (but far from isolated) chapter in American history.
America IS blessed with ONE redeeming feature: Energetic, investigative journalism and honest historical researchers, second to none in the world. Major Gordon, and many others, cut from the same cloth, may yet wake up this slothful, over-moneyed, ignorant nation, before it is too late: But only if their stories are taken to heart.
God bless America indeed!
Remember Bataan.......2000-07-31
This is an incredible well written narrative. Major Gordon is a major figure in the Battling Bastards of Bataan. His discussion of the events are well thought and eye opening. The conditions of the POW camps, their senior officers and the reflections of exactly what happened is told in a different light. His youth and early childhood reflect the reasons why a young man would enlist in the military. The deliberate thoughts that would enable a teenager of the 40's vs todays same teen. The respect for government vs 2000 traditional thoughts. The war in general tells much of the 1940's as seen from Major Gordon's eyes. His discussion of the POW conditions, the horror of war. The hostilities and the reasons for the early surrender. Much of what Major Gordon states is much different from the many history books that I have read. The major premise for reading this book is to make Americans aware of this battle and the horrible knowledge that these survivors were left behind. Today the Major is a battling force in helping Americans to remeber Bataan. A war cry of Remember the Alamo, Remeber the Maine, should now be Remember Bataan. We should all salute Major Gordon and his heroic comrades. We should all remember the heroes of Bataan.
a daughter's search.......2000-01-31
Richard Gordon and my father shared some of the same experiences, as they were both in the Bataan Death March, were on the same hell ship to Japan and were in the same prison camp together. My father went on to Kanose prison camp in 1944, as Mr. Gordon notes in his book. This book has enabled me in my research on my father, Jack, to understand what he went through. It has given me an even greater appreciation of those men who were prisoners of the Japanese. And for those captured on Bataan and taking the Death March, and those who fought on Corregidor, it only serves to further bring to the forefront, that these men were indeed considered EXPENDABLE by their government. In fact, in all of the hoopla of World War II, what happened on Bataan and Corregidor has all but been forgotten in the annals of history, except for those men and their families who fought there, died there, or were imprisoned. Some came home, most did not. My father notes in his letter home, after release, that of the 120 men in his company (Headquarters) in the 194th Tank Battalion, only 32 were coming home. He notes that that is apparently true with the whole battalion. I have had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Gordon, and several other men who were in prison with my father. I have been corresponding with others. I have met men who were in the 194th with him. How any of these men survived is a miracle. Mr. Gordon's story, along with those of others, deserves everyone's attention.
