Book Description
This work strongly supports the military actions of the controversial Civil War general, George B. McClellan. Here at last is a powerful story told from the other side--a narration that shreds the radical Republican view of the general as propagated by such renowned writers as Stephen W. Sears.
Customer Reviews:
So whom do you believe.......2005-04-05
I checked in to see how other's felt about this book, and figured that I might as well add my 2 cents. Had I known at the time that I read this book that I was going to write a review, I would have taken better notes.
First, let me say that I agree with the reveiwer who stated that the editing was not the greatest. In addition, the lack of foot notes in inexcusable, and actually detract from the strength of points that he is trying to argue. In many ways, this book is actually a book report on Sears' 'To The Gates of Richmond'.
Having already read that one, as well as Sears' 'Landscape Turned Red' I found myself referring to them again and again as I read this book. It really is interesting to note how the same information can be used to underscore two totally differnet opinions.
Several desrepencies arise bewteen Sears and Ridgeway, most notably the size of the two forces involved in several of the battles, well as the timimg of significant events: When did McClellan first learn that the Battle of Williamsburg had started, and how long did it take him to get to the front... Did he get there 'at about the time' Hancock was repulsing Early and after the 'day no longer needed saving' as Sears writes, or did he get there in time to throw additional forces into the counter-attack thereby bring 'unity and purpose to the situation' as Ridgeway would have you believe.
In addition, Ridgeway would want the reader to believe that with all of his training and education, McClellan was THE model general. He states that Sears is out of line by questioning the fact that McClellan was never anywhere close to the actual fighting, stating that as commanding general, McClellan's role was to formulate a broad plan of battle and then let his lieutenants do the fighting. While in theory Ridgeway is correct, one has to question some of McClellan's reasoning.
For instance McClellan rushes to the front at Williamsburg to see what is happening and to help out, yet at Antietam, while Burnside is floundering at the bridge, he stays put and only sends orders. This makes no sense. Speaking of Antietam, this is probably the biggest dissappointment of the whole book. It takes Ridgeway a mere 4 pages to recap the action from Hooker's early morning assault to AP Hill's repulse of Burnside's troops... FOUR pages.... After micro analyzing every battle, including South Mountain, Ridgeway's brushing off of Antietam makes you wonder whether he couldn't come up with anything good to say about McClellan's involvement on Sept 17th, 1862..
The book is not all bad however. Ridgeway's analogies to subsequent battles, wars, and commanders are interesting, and the book does indeed cause the reader to rethink alot of what has been writen about McClellan.
Style Counts.......2000-12-29
Ridgway's essay on McClellan suffers from two serious deficiencies that are unrelated to its theme. First, it is poorly written and edited. Second, it is in form neither fish nor fowl, trying on the the one hand to avoid academic formalism by not utilizing footnotes and giving incomplete references, while on the other hand "lowballing" its intended audience -- presumably avid amateurs and professional military historians -- by oversimplifying the conventional view of McClellan it seeks to debunk. The combined effects of slangy prose and loosely constructed narrative combine to give the book a panegyric tone that weakens the merits of the case -- there are merits -- that Ridgway is trying to make. He would have been better served carefully studying (and emulating) Thomas Connelly's de-bunking of the Lee myth in the latter's estimable "The Marble Man", a passionately argued piece that nonetheless observes form and respects the sophistication of its audience.
A Revisionist View.......2000-09-05
He was charismatic, a natural born leader graduating second in his class at West Point, and at the height of his fame during this countries darkest moment. So why is George B. McClellan so poorly regarded today? After all, as author James M. Ridgway, Jr. conveys in his newest book, Little Mac: Demise of an American Hero, McClellan was extremely well educated, superbly trained, experienced, and absolutely revered officer. It was common knowledge that McClellan was adored by his troops, a known steadfast patriot, and after the war remained so popular as to be decisively elected governor of New Jersey. Nonetheless, most historians have chosen to regard such a man with sarcastic disdain; so much so, that, as Ridgway points out in his Introduction, that at the end of the twentieth century, McClellan is often defined by a few choice Lincoln phrases - "he has the slows," and "he will not fight." What Ridgway offers in this revisionist study is a fresh landscape of facts from which the reader can make his own interpretation of George McCellan's worth as a military leader. Author Jim Ridgway, a Civil War Round Table veteran whose passionate interest in the Civil War narrates a powerful a story that shreds the radical Republican view of the general as propagated by such renowned writers as Stephen W. Sears. Ridgway's work illustrates how McClellan's stalwart reputation was crushed by a unique combination of circumstances. He bases his conflicting premise on the actions of a conniving political enemy in Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton and McClellan's refusal to play the political game of the time. The actions of radical Republicans like Stanton coupled with the ascension of Lincoln as America's principal political icon, is what Ridgway proclaims conspired to insure the historical demise of one of America's greatest generals. George McClellan was an undeniably clever young general who believed that the easiest way to the Confederate capital of Richmond was from the east. However, his approach would take his army out of a position to protect Washington and many senior Union officials, to include Stanton, began to wonder if McClellan meant to give the Rebels the capital. In fact, Ridgway correctly points out that McClellan was in no position to act bold or rash for many reasons. For instance, his confederate nemesis, Robert E. Lee, had the advantage of studying northern newspapers where McClellan movements and intentions were brandished by the general's opponents and any act out of the norm would have easily given the South the edge. Another argument Ridgway convincingly makes is that if McClellan had received the necessary backing from the Republican radicals hat Lee had with his government, then he would have had the required resources to decisively defeat the confederates in Richmond, leaving no doubt to his allegiance. More importantly, his so-called demise would not have occurred. Less than a year after offensive campaign to the confederate capital McClellan was labeled as timid and slow and was subsequently pulled from the Peninsula battles. Subsequently, the Union inability to prevent a confederate escape after the bloody Battle of Antietam causing Lincoln to lose faith in the general. In the end, Ridgway's conclusion is that the Republican propaganda machine of the 1860s spun discredit on McClellan. Only a handful of books have dared to buck the massive anti-McClellan tide and to tell the general's side of the story. McClellan himself tried to clear his name, but the account he wrote was fatefully destroyed in an 1881 fire and then any further attempt was thwarted by his unexpected death in 1885. While General George McClellan's reputation stands the scrutiny of time, Ridgway's Little Mac: Demise of an American Hero provides a contradictory glimpse of the general and his worth as a military leader.
Explaining why (and how much) McClellan mattered.......2000-06-20
This is a radical break from current ACW historiography, going beyond the standard lip service that McClellan was a great organizer, popular with the troops, etc. Ridgway presents the case (once better known in America) that McClellan mattered profoundly and that his dismissal by the Lincoln Administration was a national tragedy. This is the McClellan as millions knew him during the war, the Little Mac that the historical record continues to validate. The style of the book is easy, even popular; the writing is very good; and both general and specialist readers will have trouble laying the book down. For those new to the ACW, this is a great place to meet one of America's outstanding personalities. Older ACW buffs will recognize strains of the great Warren Hassler in Ridgway's project. Very exciting, highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Extensive information, but not great for a beginner.......2007-05-07
I was looking for a book that would give me some basic information on natural remedies for my baby. This book has been OK, but if I was really to follow it I would have to invest in building an entire cupboard of herbs and extracts, something I'm really not ready for.
For example, the remedy for the common cold involves combining up to 8 herbs/extracts, none of which I have or even have heard of. It is very detailed information, but too much for someone who is not ready to dive into the deep end of natural remedies.
Strange recipes.......2007-01-09
I expected to find ways of natural healing with common household ingredients, items. Instead, there were many natural healing recipes with very strange herbs & ingredients that I think are hard to find. It wasn't what I expected.
Well Organized Holistic Approach to Children's Health.......2006-11-05
Mary Bove has done a masterful job in creating a comprehensive resource for both parents and practitioners. Before subjecting your children to dangerous long-term medications, this book should be considered "first-line therapy." Parents should challange their children's doctors and practitioners should think about the consequences of the overuse of dangerous drug therapy. This book is a great place to start. Dr. Glenn Gero, Holistic Naturopathic Center
Excellent Resource for alternatives to prescriptions.......2005-10-15
I am not one of those people that boycotts medical doctors, but I do like to have alternatives to the overabundance of prescription medications out there. This book is great because it gives you information about all sorts of ailments, and different ways to treat them using natural products, as well as ways to measure how much to give to your children.
Great Info Taken with A Grain of Salt.......2005-09-30
This is a great book, but must be used with common "mommy" sense. Some of the things in the book will go against what your pediatrician will recommend, and thats fine, but you need to make a choice based on both sources of wonderful information to decide what is best for your child.
One thing that did really bother me is that there is a recipe for teething that involves honey-honey should NEVER be given to an infant under one year of age because it can be potentialy deadly. And since most babies begin teething between 6-9 months I was a bit upset that this risk was not mentioned.
The information on making infusions, oils and the like is great though. I would recommend the book to anyone who has common sense about herbs and has a desire to raise a child without the use of a lot of man made medicines.

Must have for all parents!.......2004-07-28
EXCELLENT RESOURCE FOR PARENTS. I referred to this often before calling or running to the doctor for a stomach ache or runny nose. My children are 12 and 16 and I still refer to it often for ways to treat common childhood illnesses. The book gives good information about symptoms and several alternatives for treatment. I highly recommend this for any parent!
Excellent source for parents who use alternative medicine........1998-10-21
I have this book and I am so impressed with it I want to give a copy to a friend. It has been a great source for me when treating my children with constipation, intestinal flus, and earaches. I like to use home remedies when possible. In cases of severe illness this book recommends medical treatment by your doctor.

Great cookbook for the average person........2007-04-16
My mom has this cookbook and I love everything she has made from it. My favorite, so far, is the Apricot Bread Pudding. I didn't think I liked bread pudding or even apricots, but I could eat the whole batch of this stuff in one day.
One of my mom's prerequisites for buying a cookbook is that each recipe has a picture of the final product. That's another reason to like this book.
I've always thought Richard Simmons was wierd and hokey, but this book is not. The writing of the background information for the recipes is great and usually worth a chuckle. It is obvious he really loves food and wants others to know such enjoyment.
Funny, fabulous fare!.......2003-11-10
I know, I know - am I REALLY going to try to get away with extolling the virtues of a Richard Simmons cookbook? YES! This is a great cookbook, filled with recipes anyone can make, tips for healthier cooking and living, and lots of cute stories and jokes from "Mr. Slimmons" himself.
I picked this up after thumbing through it in a bookstore one afternoon, and I haven't been disappointed yet. It's got everything - appetizers, main and side dishes, desserts. Throughout the book are tips on different cuts of meat and how to ask for them, substitutions for certain ingredients you may cook with, and comparisons of some foods that have many different types, like rice, potatoes, and hot peppers. Everything is presented in easy steps, and none of the recipes have such exotic ingredients that you can't find them in your everyday grocery store. The pictures are bright and every recipe is preceeded by Richard's 'background' on it's origin. My favorite so far has to be the Maple-Glazed Roast Turkey Breast in a Cornbread Nest. Soooo good.
Although I am not a die hard Richard Simmons fan, I would reccomend this book to anyone who wants to lose weight but still eat some really delicious food. In my house, this book is the ying to Emeril's yang!!!
Great Basics.......2003-10-28
I use this book often and most of my family and friends would consider me to be an excellent cook. There are a limited amount of recipes but all are usable and very good. Not too simple and not to complex. Basic recipes with SUPER illustrations. I find it much easier to make something new if I know what the heck it should look like. Besides the basic detail, the book is spiced with wise comments and hints. There should be a copy on every cooks shelve (or hidden in a drawer...)
The one book that has it all!!!.......2002-07-13
The recipies are so tasty you won't miss what's missing(the extra fat and calories)there's a little something for EVERYONE here. On a low carb diet? No problem! or.....do you carbo-load? Are you a vegetarian? or, do you love meat? Either way this book is for you! My personal favorites so far,are the south beach halibut with jade sauce and fruit salsa and the keep away the flu chicken soup delicious!) I highly reccomend this book. For the two aforementioned plus the Seattle salmon alone are worth the price of the book!
Farewell to Fat.......2002-02-11
Love It!! I have had several intimate dinner parties and I prepared dinner and dessert from his book and didn't tell anyone.
One couple asked if they could take me home.
It's better than Jenny Craig's cookbook.

Not my kind of cards.......2006-04-28
I found the card designs too busy, but my style is more along the lines of Simple Scrapbooks. These cards take longer to make than advertised and a lot of the designs only seem to work with specific patterned paper and lots of fancy/expensive embellishments. I am more simplistic and minimalistic, but this book would probably be great for people with different styles.

If, when you think of sage, you think only of the bottle of dried herbs on your spice rack, you're missing out on the wide variety of wonders in the Salvia family. "Since ancient times, sage has been associated with at least the restoration of health and, in many cases, the healing of mind, body, and spirit," says Ann Lovejoy, author, columnist, and gardening school proprietor. In addition, many sages make beautiful ornamental borders as they flower in all shades of the color spectrum.
Beginning with a comprehensive introduction of the history and uses of sage, Lovejoy then moves on to the different types of sage. Meadow sages, which are the easiest to grow for most people, are lovely to look at and can hold their own mixed in with other plants, shrubs, or herbs. For each type of meadow sage, Lovejoy explains how they do in a garden, with which plants they form pleasing partnerships, and lists the named forms of that variety. She does the same in the following chapters and sections on sages for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, in addition to classic border sages, bedding sages, dry-country sages, late-blooming sages, culinary sages, and scented sages. The last two chapters are devoted to cooking and making crafts with sage. For a traditional tonic tea, simply steep sage in hot water for 5 to 10 minutes, drain, and add honey to taste. Insert fresh common sage under the skin of a whole chicken for an aromatic and flavorful roast chicken, or use pineapple sage in a sorbet for a sweet and mellow dessert.
In The Sage Garden, Lovejoy not only shares her extensive knowledge, she also infuses each page with her love for the herb. The photographs by Grey Crawford are simple and evocative. The two merge in a paean to the ancient herb. --Dana Van Nest
Book Description
With its remarkable scent and myriad varieties, this dusky beauty has long been celebrated by gardeners, chefs, and healers alike. Today, gardeners everywhere are discovering that growing sage is a simple and wonderfully rewarding pleasure. In The Sage Garden, horticultural expert Ann Lovejoy profiles her favorite varieties and provides straightforward counsel on cultivating the different types of sage for the particular climates in which they thrive. In addition, this gorgeously photographed book explains which kinds are best for drying, which for cooking, and which are simply meant to be enjoyed in the garden. Once ready to harvest, readers can turn to the section for health, beauty, and tantalizing culinary recipes. No gardener or sensualist should be without this book

Customer Reviews:
The best book since War and Peace.......2007-09-07
I taught my daughter to read beginning at age three and continuing through the second grade. By the time she started school, she was reading at the fourth grade level and I attribute it to the "How to teach your baby to read." book
She drank in the knowledge and the methods worked marvelously! For instance, I followed the book and used learning as a reward for her being good(she is perfect anyway)and she would bring the cards and book to me for another lesson.
I bought astronomy, geography, math books and she used her reading ability to progress even farther. The only problem I see with a child's excessive reading ability is that schools are not ready for them. She is not gifted but she is advanced and they couldn't deal with it.
I found that enthusiastic praise, smiles, hugs, etc worked so much better than "That's correct, dear. Now to the next lesson." As Dr. Doman wrote, an excited parent who is happy their child can read transmits that love of learning and enthusiasm to the child and encourages the child. I give this book at least 10 stars if it were possible.
It's never too early to expose your child to reading.......2006-04-26
According to this book, little children (0-5 years old) are more intelligent and capable of learning than previously imagined. After it is understood that they have a huge amount of curiosity about the world around them, the authors strongly recommend enriching a child's environment by teaching them to read.
The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential (the group behind this book) was begun to see if it was possible to teach brain-damaged children to read. In this case, "brain-damaged" means children whose brains were normal at conception, but were damaged through injury or disease. After discovering that the answer to their question was a resounding Yes, the same method was tried on well children, with the same result.
For the average child, being able to explore their world, through crawling or walking, is vital to their development, so sticking them in a playpen with a bunch of toys, while understandable, is a bad idea. There is no "wrong" way to teach a child to read; the authors present their method, which involves writing words on flashcards in very large and bold print, and showing them to the child several times a day, for a few seconds at a time. It is never too early to start, even with children less than 1 year old. Do not be concerned if you cannot go "all the way" in teaching your child to read; even partial progress will help your child in the long run. Most importantly, the process should be joyous, and never a chore, for parent and child. If either one is cranky, or having a bad day, save the words for another day.
This is an excellent book. Written for parents, it is very easy to understand, and shows that it is never too early to expose your child to the world of reading. It was also first published in the 1960s, so they must be doing something right. It is very much recommended.
Does it work?.......2006-02-09
29 years ago I bought this book to teach my first-born how to read... I believe she was 1 year. This daughter, Jubilee, was the first person to graduate college in my family, 2 4-year University degrees. Is it a coincidence? I'm here today buying this book for her first-born, now 4 months old.
This is an excellent book. I believe in its premise and have proof of its success. A quality way to spend productive time with your child, without pushing too early. It really is about a visual picture that they absorb and instilling at the same time, an eagerness for reading because it becomes easy for them when they hit school-age.
This book changed my life.......2005-12-22
I was a "Teach Your Baby To Read" kid - and I can unreservedly recommend this book from first-hand experience. My mum taught me to read using Doman's methods in the 70s and it opened up the world to me. I remember it as a thoroughly rewarding, enjoyable and FUN experience. At the time it felt like a game to me - I had no idea it would smooth the road to further learning so completely. Excellent reading, comprehension and communication skills are among the greatest gifts you can give a child, and this book spells out the steps for you. I still have the original, somewhat worn edition that my mum had, but now with a little girl of my own I've bought the updated edition. Three decades after my mum read Doman, I'm looking forward to teaching MY baby to read!
Grounded in Science.......2005-12-06
I found Glenn Doman's book nearly forty years ago when I was looking for ways to teach my mentally retarded class to read simple words that would help them be independent. It worked for them, so I used it to teach my own three children to read. It opened up the world for all of them.

Book Description
In this English translation of the colorful recreation of the childhood and early adulthood of Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, his daughter Guadalupe Rivera Marín explores the ideological and artistic development of a revolutionary painter. Rivera Marín begins with a pivotal trip that Diego took with his father at the age of six and continues through his travels in Europe, prior to his return to Mexico, where he would later marry Frida Kahlo and found the muralist movement.
With bold colors and decisive brush strokes, Diego Rivera's legacy to the international arts community is undeniable. His murals and paintings grace iconic buildings and cultural centers throughout Mexico, in accordance with Rivera's commitment to making his art available to the working-class people he often portrayed in his works. In these buildings and popular spaces, Rivera's art serves to educate succeeding generations about Mexican history, art, and society. As passionate about politics as he was about art, Rivera dared to fight for societal change with a brush and a bomb. Not content to watch from the comfort of his studio, Rivera became an active participant in world politics, fighting alongside the Zapatistas in the hills of southern Mexico and the socialist and anarchist revolutionaries on the streets of Barcelona and Paris.

The definitive biography of a most remarkably talented man.......2005-05-10
Ably translated into English by Dick Gerdes, Diego Rivera The Red is written by Guadlupe Rivera Marin, the daughter of the renowned Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. Rivera's murals and paintings grace iconic buildings and cultural centers throughout Mexico as a result of his personal commitment to making his art available to the working-class people he so often portrayed in his works. In addition to his art, Rivera was also engaged in the struggle for societal change and became an active participant in the movements of his day, including fighting alongside the Zapatistas in the hills of southern Mexico and the socialist/anarchist revolutionaries on the streets of Barcelona and Paris. This 256-page biography of Marin includes his encounters with and attitudes towards such history making figures as Emiliano Zapata and Vladimir Lenin. Highly recommended and very informative reading, Diego Rivera The Red is the definitive biography of a most remarkably talented and quite passionately dedicated man of "interesting times" and accomplishments.

Powerful and Informative.......2005-05-14
This is a moving account of World War II and the struggles that surrounded the people involved. Your child will learn respect for Fred and the risks that he took to safeguard his fellow man. I used this book as research for my own historical novel and found it to be immensely useful.
