"Must" reading for all Civil War buffs and historians........2000-03-05
Texas played an important role in the American Civil War, providing more than 70,000 Texans to the Confederate armies. Thirty-seven of those Texans served as general officers and included such notable battlefield commanders as Albert Sidney Johnston, John Bell Hood, Ben McCulloch, Samuel Bell Maxey, and Tom Green. In Lone Star Generals In Gray, history and author Ralph Wooster provides substantial insight into the careers of these Confederate general officers from Texas and sets them within the broader context of Texan involvement in the War Between The States. These were men who led (and in some cases, misled) their troops in a uniquely Texan way. Lone Star Generals In Gray is informative, vivid, fascinating, illuminating and insightful reading for students of the Civil War and the history of Texas.

Wooster keeps his title as "top living Texas historian".......2003-02-23
Anyone with experience in Civil War history, or with an interest in Texas history generally, is familiar with the work of Prof. Wooster of Lamar University. His academic and scholarly accomplishments and recognitions over the past half-century are many and deserved, and his list of publishing credits is lengthy. This volume follows logically from his TEXAS AND TEXANS IN THE CIVIL WAR (1995) and LONE STAR GENERALS IN GRAY (2000), helping to complete his portrait of Texas forces in the War between the States. Texas contributed seventy-eight infantry and cavalry regiments and thirty-five artillery batteries which saw service from the Virginia Tidewater to the California border (not even counting the fourteen regiments and independent battalions raised for state service, and which are not considered here). Many Texan soldiers served in the same unit throughout the War. Since the regiment, the basic military building block, was usually recruited in a single region of the state and was commanded by a local (elected) individual, the genealogical value of understanding the system is obvious. Nor is this simply a handbook setting out the key details of each unit (though those are included), but a narrative history and explanation of the Texas military establishment, the broad campaigns and specific battles in which its units fought, and the successes and failures of the men who commanded it. There also are nearly nine hundred footnotes (many of them considerably more than source citations) and a lengthy bibliographical essay, making this almost required reading for any student of the Civil War and any family researcher with mid-19th century Texas ancestry.

The question I'm most frequently asked goes something like this, "Shawn, what's your secret--what's the one thing you do differently than everyone else that allowed you to build such great abs?" The one thing, the one thing, the one thing... So many people are looking for the one thing--the secret. Many people think the one thing is some ab-training device like the type you see advertised on television infomercials. It's not. Others would like you to believe that the one thing is some miracle fat-burning pill. It's not. Others would have you believe that the one thing--the big secret--is liposuction or some other quick fix. Once again, it's not.
The fact is, and this is the first and most fundamental lesson of my ABSolution Program, the one thing is everything! Everything we do affects the way we look and the way we feel. It's when we exercise, how we exercise, and the exercises we do. It's when, what, and how much we eat. It's which vitamins and supplements we nourish our bodies with. It's how much we rest and recover. It's how we think and how we live. It's everything. And, that's what this book is all about. It's about everything you need to learn to build your own absolutely fantastic abs.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Guide To Obtaining More Than Just Cut Abs.......2007-06-28
Kudos to Shawn Phillips. Absolution is an excellent book that teaches how you can get great abs. It dispels the notion that great abs are gained by merely performing ab exercises. Spot focusing just doesn't work. In this book, Shawn explains that excellent abs come only by consistant and intense strength training over the whole body and by using a healthy diet. Good job, Shawn.
-Craig Nybo
Not worth the money.......2006-03-10
Anything you read in here has already been written in much better detail. although the pictures of the exercises are good with explaination, you can get this from the internet for free with a little looking.
This is overkill.......2005-03-22
This is overkill in my opinion. Focus on a program like his brother's 'body for life' and with consistent training you will see more defined abs in 12 weeks. ABS ARE MADE IN THE KITCHEN.
Too many unnecessary photos, poor on substance.......2005-02-10
In this 130-page book, there are 23 full-page photographs of the author, posing on mountains, streets, in front of his home front door, on lakes, under the shower, with and without glasses, you name it. Before you get to chapter 6, which contains 10 pages, the first 5 chapters range in length from 2 to 5 pages. Whether it is relevant or not, the author scatters his personal photos everywhere in the book.
If you think that an eloquent author could make a 2-page chapter so informative, you are up for disappointment. Shawn admits that his college education is in computer science but he bases his knowledge on his experience. Indeed, he proves to do very well in building large muscle mass. Yet, he acts like a biochemist with Ph.D. in nutrition when he prescribes his daily intake of 16 capsules of "lean-system 7", antioxidant fuel, multivitamins, and "z-mass pm". Like his brother Bill, he does not strive to learn the systemic basis of human anatomy or physiology before tackling fitness training. Here are the mistakes that should have not been made in a well searched book:
1) The rectus abdominis muscle does not have two regions as chapter 7 suggests. There are no upper or lower activating exercises to the rectus abdominis. The author's poor understanding of anatomy made him confuse the relationship between the origin, insertion, and the direction of action of that muscle.
2) Chapter 7, "My Absolute Favorites", displays fifteen abdominal exercises, starting from basic crunches and ending with abs vacuum. Then the author recommends in chapter 11, performing abdominal exercises in the morning. If the back erectors are not strengthened in proportion to abdominal muscles then serious muscular imbalance follows. This author does not believe in any strengthening of the back erectors. All the exercises of chapter 9, "the best of the rest", deal with peripheral muscles. As you can tell, the author is only obsessed with the muscles that he could visualize in a front-view mirror. The back erectors are out of sight and out of the author's mind.
3) The "standing dumbbell press", chapter 9, shows how the author had incurred serious shoulder stiffness and loss of shoulder range of motion by his inability to erect his arms vertically overhead. All the exercises he describes in chapter 9, do nothing but shortening and bulking muscles without balancing their antagonists. Chapter 9 starts with "dumbbell bench press", then "inclined dumbbell flyes", and ends with "barbell squat". There is no single word about whole body motion such as Clean from the floor, Deadlift, overhead squat, or good morning. The routine described in the book builds massive peripheral muscles that induce trauma to the spine, because of lack of spinal strengthening.
This book, like many others on strength training, proves that there are many well-accomplished self-motivated bodybuilders despite their mediocre understanding of the science of fitness or of nutrition. The main drawback with these self-centered, poorly educated fitness trainers is the long term errors that cause serious health issues such as weakening the spine by building massive arms and legs without proportionally developing the spinal muscles. Bill Phillips' approach of reversing long accrued pathological changes with his 12-week training program is an example of such irrational and inexperience approach to fitness. It does not recognize the chronic ill-effects of obesity and overweight on health and the great difficulty (if not impossibility) of reversing such chronic effects in a matter of weeks or even months.
A useful addition to my fitness library.......2005-01-24
I think that this is a very good book. I do not agree with the reviewers who have trashed the book and the author. The text is concise and simple. It does not claim to be Arnold's Encyclopedia but it gives a good program in a straightforward and easy to understand format. I do agree that the hardback is too expensive. I was lucky and found a discounted paperback. I am glad that I purchased it and consider it a useful addition to my fitness library.
Product Description
ABSolution incorporates the many lessons Shawn Phillips has learned in his own pursuit of building a better body, which has spanned some 20 years. It also incorporates his countless hours of scientific research and real-world experience gained by helping numerous world-class athletes and people from all walks of life to successfully reach their fitness goals. ABSolution is no quick fix; nor is it a "simple and easy" way to get in great shape. It is, however, an effective, scientifically safe and sound approach.
Book Description
Cooking to Hook Up: The Bachelor's Date-Night Cookbook is really two books--a relationship guide and a cookbook--presented together in a hysterically funny, yet sophisticated voice. The authors carefully instruct their male readers to determine the type of girl his date is. They offer ten distinct types and clear profiles of each type. The book offers five complete menus per girl, as well as numerous other tips on how to get the girl. This is real information and these are real recipes.
Customer Reviews:
Great Gift Item - Very Well Done.......2005-11-29
I ordered this book out of curiosity and was very pleasantly surprised when it arrived. With concise informative chapters on wine selection, etc. it would make an ideal gift for any young person moving into their own digs for the first time, or a great gift for any bachelor. Handsomely designed and bound, it is well worth the price.
An amusing guide to using a plate to entice your date.......2005-04-21
The publicity for this book quickly intones the phrase "It's A Fact: Cooking is dead sexy." And the whole idea of this cooking guide is how to use food to land that dream lady.
Authors Michaels and Campbell, formerly husband and wife, decided after being married for a few years that they worked better as a couple of friends rather than being married. So they divorced and wrote what is essentially a workbook for the dating scene.
The book is divided into three distinct sections: Preparing to cook for a date, what to cook for a variety of "girls" (the girl next door, the party girl, the gourmet girl, etc), and finally, what to cook for breakfast should the male this book is aimed at "get lucky" (their words, not mine).
Each of the Girl sections gives an overview of the type of girl being talked about, followed by several recipes for the perfect date, and a chronology of what needs to be done when, from shopping to preparation to cooking. It also offers up suggestions on what to have lying around on the coffee table, what kind of drinks to serve, and so forth.
Most of all, it is the wit and whimsy that is woven throughout the book that makes it special. Although it IS a serious guide for the hapless male in the dating pool, the humor in each chapter is evident, and the tone throughout the book is somewhat tongue in cheek.
Still, the recipes are worth having for the most part, and the other tips help you along in your quest to land the perfect "girl". Clearly, author Campbell probably didn't follow his own advice; if he did, he and Michaels would probably still be married. But it's a fun romp and a decidedly different way to approach having fun and success while cooking, and would make an amusing and fun addition to any cookbook library.
Could. Not. Put. This. Down........2005-04-06
I stumbled across this book at Barnes and Noble while looking for something else. I didn't realize that two hours had passed and that I had read through half the book standing up until my back started killing me. I lost all sense of what was going on around me. This is an amazing book, not just for the descriptive details of characters while writing a novel, which I am doing. And that is the REAL reason I would purchase this book for all of my family and friends. This book is great not just for characterization of the different kinds of women, but for the recipes as well.
I don't need to have many books. I read them while I'm there. I want this book. I must have this book. I read the whole book already, and I must have this book for reference. I have yet to read a book as hilarious, as accurately descriptive of the potential pitfalls, and as applicable to the mind-numbing dilemma of preparing a meal for a potential love interest that you don't know that well, yet.
I couldn't stop laughing when I got to the "Gourmet Girl" description. The authors DEFINITELY know what they are talking about. The only guys who have ever impressed me with their culinary skills were the chefs at Le Cordon Bleu and the guys I competed next to at the culinary competition.
P.S. Guys, after reading this book, if you happen to be in love with a Gourmet Girl, you may now be justifiably terrified at how slim your chances are to impress her with dinner. Do exactly as the authors instruct you to do, and make reservations for an expensive (and preferably Michelin starred) restaurant. It would be even better for you if you could take her to Lucas Carton or La Tour D'Argent. Yes, they are located in Paris. Yes, she is expensive to impress. Take her to a vineyard, study up on wines, talk to her about them. Make these things happen, and she'll be yours forever. I promise. AFTER you have done that, buy yourself a copy of Larousse Gastronomique, and the Oxford Companion to Food. Being able to quote things from the Oxford Companion to Wine will also amaze her. The fact that you went to so much trouble to impress her will ALSO impress her.
If you're short on cash, and still want to impress your Gourmet Girl, grab Dornenburg and Page's Culinary Artistry, which will help you to score major points.
(Incidentally, the description of the Gourmet Guy at the end of the chapter had me hoping that he'd be listed in the section under resources. I want to meet that man with the edible landscaping!)
I just hope they write a sequel (Cooking to Hook Up for Ladies) because I thoroughly enjoyed this!
Reduces the stress.......2004-12-20
Here's a not-so-secret secret: men are linear. We think in terms of how to get from point A to point Z. Having a cookbook that keeps both the ingredients and process simple and by the numbers *plus* helps you select a meal and ambience specific to the kind of girl your dating? Bliss. This is *the* cookbook for men, and not just for guys who are dating. Married men, here's a thought: surprise and spoil your wives with a fantastic meal. The recipes are easy to follow, and even the klutziest of guys should be able to pull them off.
Awesome cookbook.......2004-08-14
This is truly one of the great cookbooks I have seen, not merely because the recipes are phenomenal. The matches to the date type are as accurate as they are hysterical. Having made several of the dishes in here, I can tell you that the recipes are not super complicated or missing steps/ingrediesnts (a la Marth Stewart). I hope to hell they do a series of these of these cookbooks.
Book Description
In the early years of World War II, it was an amazing feat for an Allied airman shot down over occupied Europe to make it back to England. By 1943, however, pilots and crew members, supplied with escape kits, knew they had a 50 percent chance of evading capture and returning home. An estimated 12,000 French civilians helped make this possible.
More than 5,000 airmen, many of them American, successfully traveled along escape lines organized much like those of the U.S. Underground Railroad, using secret codes and stopping in safe houses. If caught, they risked internment in a POW camp. But the French, Belgian, and Dutch civilians who aided them risked torture and even death.
Sherri Ottis writes candidly about the pilots and crewmen who walked out of occupied Europe, as well as the British intelligence agency in charge of Escape and Evasion. But her main focus is on the helpers, those patriots who have been all but ignored in English-language books and journals.
To research their stories, Ottis hiked the Pyrenees and interviewed many of the survivors. She tells of the extreme difficulty they had in avoiding Nazi infiltration by double agents; of their creativity in hiding evaders in their homes, sometimes in the midst of unexpected searches; of their generosity in sharing their meager food supplies during wartime; and of their unflagging spirit and courage in the face of a war fought on a very personal level.

Book Description
Many, if not most, families have their own story about mental illness, addictions, or violence. Research depicts that at least 50% of people with substance abuse and addictions have a mental disorder also. The stories presented in this book are small samples of similar tales that most anyone could tell about their family. But, they do not. Due to the stigma and bias regarding mental illness, most people remain "silent heroes".
This book explores the emotional journey and the healthy, although painful, emotional process that is necessary for families to "come to terms" with and find healing regarding the mental disorder of their loved one.

An honest and touching portrayal of the impact of mental illness........2007-03-03
This book gives the reader wonderful insight into the day to day and long term impact of mental illness on family. It offers personal insight from several people who have first hand knowledge and experience coping with this issue. It also offers excellent resource information and tips and information about how to cope with this challenging problem that impacts so many lives. As a social worker, I would definitely recommend it to people with family members struggling with mental illness.

The Face of a Lost Soul - The Determination of their "Silent Hero"........2006-07-10
Hit with a dilapidating illness, a family's journey to unite and overcome is a harrowing and trying time. Although many believe the road leads to more sorrow and devastation, this book will prove the old cliché "where there's a will, there's a way."
In "Silent Heroes", you will read one particular family togetherness and how they overcame and helped one another when their mother was diagnosed as a schizophrenic. Told through the daughter's point of view, you will find inner strength and answers to guide you if in a similar situation.
Silent Heroes, as the title states, celebrates those who do not seek glory, or recognition but stand by as their vows or compassion direct them; to be there and help a family loved one.
The author's easy to understand and straight to the point explanations on mental illness fully captures the catapult one is thrust in when mental illness strikes.
The book is told through the daughter's viewpoint, allowing us to experience her highs and lows growing up with a mother who was schizophrenic. There are very few in life who display this determination and perseverance, but more importantly- compassion. This embodiment comes out, as well, in small snippets of other case studies.
This book will guide you in better understanding the hardships felt by members of one afflicted by a form of mental illness. Miss Focht offers several links to learn more about schizophrenia, depression, and bi-polar. She also points out signs of detecting a mental illness.
An encouraging read for all whether or not you personally have experienced this affliction or know of someone who is going through it; it will help give you an insider's look. A very good and thought-provoking read.
FINALIST AWARD WINNER-.......2005-11-23
Silent Heroes is a Finalist Award Winner for USABest Books-2005, in two categories: Social Change, and Psychology/Mental Health. I am most proud of the Social Change, because that is what is needed: much more awareness and education about mental illness, to erase the stigma for families and their ill loved ones. thanks for reading this. The Author, Maureen Focht MS
A True Rendering that touched my heart.......2005-11-02
I admire Maureen Focht tremendously for having the courage to speak out about what it is like to live with family members with mental illness and dispel old myths in the public mind. While she dedicates this book to her Dad as the silent hero who stood by her mother who was diagnosed with schizophrenia, Maureen is also a silent hero. She has interviewed other women who offer their stories on living with depression and schizophrenia. All of the stories offer coping skills for children, partners, and friends. Frank discussion about the need for support, speaking up, getting information and more are covered here. I read the book from cover to cover, and found that the stories touched my heart. By speaking up, Maureen informs the public about how to understand and adapt to the needs of all family members when one has a diagnosis of mental illness. Bravo Maureen. I was so interested, I sat down and read it from cover to cover and I highly recommend it to all!
Honest, Compassionate and Revealing.......2005-10-29
It's not often that a book about profoundly personal issues can both educate and inspire. Ms. Focht puts into perspective the internal conflict that is felt in dealing with a loved one with a mental illness, against a backdrop of a love story. She lays bare the feelings and longings of a child seeking the presence of her mother who is simply unavailable - even to herself. It is a revealing journey that brings to life the silent hero of the story, the father who is present, courageous and like each of us - quite human.
Specifics about these illnesses are detailed through multiple interviews as well as the author's own story. I was moved by how similiar and universal feelings can be amongst those who have a family member or friend who experiences an illness. The examples are provocative and sound a clarion call for understanding through education and sharing of information.
The author states: "Educating ourselves provides us with the armor and the weapons to assist us and our family members through the maze of ignorance, public perception, and the social systems we need to support our loved one with mental illness."
A much needed book for educators, grown family members and children seeking understanding and tools to gain support.

Good for Interested Amateurs (like me).......2006-07-09
The book is clumsy to handle, due to its thickness and small pages. Nonetheless it contains innumerable card tricks, and a few mind-reading and illusion tricks as well. Unfortunately, it doesn't cover anything you're likely to see in Las Vegas.
Useful if somewhat limited book.......2005-10-28
Mark Wilson is certainly a name in magic and has been around for a very long time. It was on the strength of that name alone that I bought this book, but it wasn't really as comprehensive as I would have liked. Many of the presentations are useful to beginning and intermediate performers as they are. A full time professional like me can fall back on these presentations as well, but over all this is second string material for me.
[...]
a very good book !.......2005-06-07
Mark Wilson is no doubt a master magician and a master of all magicians. This is reflected in this volume. The tricks in this book are a mixture of classical as well as new tricks....both entertaining and mystical. Mark Wilson has dealt with every possible branch of close up magic, conjuring and some basic stage illusions. They are easy to do. Some close up tricks require basic sleight of hands which are worth learning. If you are really serious about magic as a hobby, then this book should be in your book shelf. And if you are planning to take it up as your profession, then nothing can be a good book to start with. Some of the basic sleights are still used by many magicians. The illustrations are really gems. The copy which I got from Amazon was a brand new copy though I purchased a used one.
I wish I got this book when I started out on the mystical world of magic 15 years ago.
The best there is.......2003-12-27
I recommend without hesitation this book for beginners or intermediates alike. It contains card tricks, sponge balls, cups and balls and even some stage illusions that you might find suitable with a little creativity or modification. It has card tricks that are pretty much already 'public knolwedge' to layman, but you might use them too using the way Mark Wilson teaches you to present them. However, there are also some advanced sleights on cards that beginners can learn easily because of the illustrations and the amazingly, EASY to understand text. Mark Wilson's Cylopedia of Magic. 5 out of 5.
best Magic Book.......2003-04-21
This book is not good, great, or awesome, but it's UNBELIEVABLE. The illustrations are very descriptive. When I first got this book I could learn a trick just be looking at the illustrations. (Though you should still read). There are over 17 types of magic listed and taught in the book. Some of these are, Sponge ball magic, Card magic, Cups and balls (the FULL routine), Stage magic, illusions, and more. This is the book to start up on for beginning magic. If you had to get only ONE book of magic, I would suggest purchasing this one. God bless you, and may your future in magic go well.

You're on the field, tennis court, or skating rink, and you sprain your ankle. What you do about it from the first few minutes on can determine how much pain you'll endure and how soon you'll get back to your sport. Anybody's Sports Medicine Book: The Complete Guide to Quick Recovery from Injuries tells you what you should do immediately, when to see a doctor, and how to rehabilitate your injury. Organized by injured body part, it's aimed at the fitness exerciser as well as the hard-core recreational athlete.
James Garrick, M.D., is a super sports doc with the ability to explain in a simple, commonsense way everything you need to know about what's wrong with you and what to do about it, along with rehab exercise illustrations, commonly asked questions, and when to seek medical help. Garrick offers many extras, such as tips for older athletes, how to choose a sports medicine doc, and special considerations for ballet dancers. All of this is in a lively, chatty style, as if you were sitting in Dr. Garrick's office.
Garrick heads San Francisco's Center for Sports Medicine and is medical advisor to the National Football League, the U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team, and the San Francisco Ballet. Peter Radetsky is a science writer with a clear, sprightly style. This book is greatly needed, especially in these days of managed care when it's difficult for fitness athletes even to get a referral to a sports-medicine specialist or to get rehabilitative care. Read this highly recommended book before you get hurt, and carry it in your gym bag. --Joan Price

How to Play with Your Injuries.......2001-05-06

It gives blunt information on the benefits of surgery for different conditions--pro and con. Garrick's credentials show his ability to get injured athletes (professionals as well as weekend warriors) back onto the playing field as quickly as possible. He also gives advice on sport-specific prevention of injuries--strengthening excerises and playing techniques. Besides a copy for myself (an aging tennis player), I am buying one for my son who does extreme snowboarding and biking and spends much time in emergency rooms!
An overview, but not a complete guide.......2001-01-28
I used this book as a guide to recovering from patellofemoral pain syndrome, a very common, but very difficult and debilitating problem.
What I found is that the book's recommendation to strengthen the vastus medialus and stretch the quadriceps group is fine as far as it goes. But for many sufferers it will not go far enough. Many doctors feel that any or all of the muscles in the leg, from the hips to the ankles, may need strengthening/and or stretching to overcome this syndrome.
If you do work on your vastus medialus (which practically every doctor recommends, it's just that other muscles may be involved), follow the author's suggestion to use an electic muscle stimulator. It builds the muscle much faster than any other form of isometric exercse. Muscle stimulators are now sold on the net.
If this doesn't cure your knee problems, don't despair. Find a more comprehensive (but not necessarily more stressful) exercise program.
Every Serious Athlete Should have this Book in their Library.......2000-10-23
Dr. Garrick's book reads like an office consultation with this highly qualified and experienced orthopedic surgeon; it is clear, straightforward and informative. For twenty years he has dealt with the abuses and insults I've heaped on my 58-year-old body during mountain climbing excursions, wilderness skiing, backpacking, foot races, ocean kayaking, and heavy back yard work. Each time I limped into his Sports Medicine Center at Bush and Hyde Streets in San Francisco, complaining about plantar fascitis, neck pain, or my latest nemesis, a torn medial meniscus, he convinced me to follow a regimen of strengthening exercises over a period of weeks instead of recommending surgery right off the bat. Sometimes it worked, other times surgery was necessary.
Jim's book is a valuable resource for any athlete, professional or otherwise. It is organized in such a way that it explains the body parts in detail and what can go wrong with them. If you are like me, you want to know just what a medial meniscus is, how it functions, and why it went south on you. Sidebars on the first page of each chapter warn you to see a doctor if any of the listed symptoms are present. Just as likely, the book may steer you along your own path to recovery. If you are a serious athlete, you should have this book in your library.

Book Description
“
The Flamboya Tree is a fascinating story that will leave the reader informed about a missing piece of the World War II experience, and in awe of one family’s survival.”
—Elizabeth M. Norman, author of
We Band of Angels: The Untold Story of American Nurses Trapped on Bataan by the Japanese
“It is a well-known fact that war, any war, is senseless and degrading. When innocent people are brought into that war because they happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, it becomes incomprehensible. Java, 1942, was such a place and time, and we were those innocent people.”
Fifty years after the end of World War II, Clara Olink Kelly sat down to write a memoir that is both a fierce and enduring testament to a mother’s courage and a poignant record of an often overlooked chapter of the war.
As the fighting in the Pacific spread, four-year-old Clara Olink and her family found their tranquil, pampered lives on the beautiful island of Java torn apart by the invasion of Japanese troops. Clara’s father was taken away, forced to work on the Burma railroad. For Clara, her mother, and her two brothers, the younger one only six weeks old, an insistent knock on the door ended all hope of escaping internment in a concentration camp. For nearly four years, they endured starvation, filth-ridden living conditions, sickness, and the danger of violence from their prison guards. Clara credits her mother with their survival: Even in the most perilous of situations, Clara’s mother never compromised her beliefs, never admitted defeat, and never lost her courage. Her resilience sustained her three children through their frightening years in the camp.
Told through the eyes of a young Clara, who was eight at the end of her family’s ordeal,
The Flamboya Tree portrays her mother’s tenacity, the power of hope and humor, and the buoyancy of a child’s spirit. A painting of a flamboya tree—a treasured possession of the family’s former life—miraculously survived the surprise searches by the often brutal Japanese soldiers and every last-minute flight. Just as her mother carried this painting through the years of imprisonment and the life that followed, so Clara carries her mother’s unvanquished spirit through all of her experiences and into the reader’s heart.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent!.......2006-11-04
I loved this book. It tells a story of courage, bravery, and family. It vividly captures an aspect of WWII that (sadly) is unknown by most people. My grandmother was also a prisoner of war in a Japanese camp in Indonesia and gave birth to my dad while in the camp. They are both gone now and this book helped fill in so many of the details of their story. Thank you Clara Kelly for telling your story, and telling it well.
Great reading.......2002-09-03
...It's awesome! I am so thankful to Ms. Kelly for sharing her experience. My Grandmother was also a prisoner of the Japanese in Indonesia during WWII. She had 2 babies (my dad, 6 months, & uncle, 1.5 years). I have heard 'pieces' of my Grandmothers story, but she has never been able to speak of it all. Now I know why. This book is truely a favorite of mine and always will be. Thank you Ms. Kelly. God Bless.
Very touching.......2002-07-03
The Flamboya Tree, by Clara Olink Kelly, was very touching.
This is a part of history that people should know about. We know about Japan invading Pearl Harbor, and other places, but what we don't know is the people who became effected by the war.
Clara tells this story so well, she makes you feel like you are there seeing all the tragic events yourself.
This is one book that I would highly recommend to everyone, I think we can learn a great deal from it and have a better understanding of war itself.
The Flamboya Tree: Memories of a Mother's Wartime Courage.......2002-04-15
We were bowled over by this book! Clara Kelly presents vivid and heart rending images of the heroic acts of her mother to save her children from the devastating conditions in a Japanese concentration camp during WWII. This tribute to her mother also reveals the tenacity of the author and her older brother under unbelievably inhumane conditions. We will read it again.
