Memories from the Heart, Another soldier standing.......2002-01-25
I feel this book was very detailed and very through on the events that took place in the different countries that Don traveled. It was like I was another soldier standing by him living the experience. "Memories from the Heart" was a very exceptional book in my opinion about World War II, and the Korea War. There were many places that were described that I didn't even new existed. I am very greatful that I spent the time to read this book.
A Real Page-turner!.......2002-01-15
Had a difficult time putting this one down.
An unusual view of life as a solider in WWII.
Very interesting.
ENGAGING!.......2002-01-13
This very unique view of WWII and the Korean War, written from the point of view of an active serviceman, enables us to actually live through this historical event along with the author, Donald Mapes...
MEMORIES FROM THE HEART is a very engaging and fascinating account of M/Sgt. Mapes' service in the US and also in the very exotic and exciting land of the Orient.
A very interesting read - hard to put down!

Book Description
This major new publication is the most comprehensive reference source ever on eighteenth-century authors writing in the English language about philosophical ideas and issues. Featuring authors taken from 1689 through to the middle of the nineteenth century, the period beginning with John Locke and ending with Dugald Stewart, the word 'philosophical' is used in a wide, eighteenth-century sense. Thus the Dictionary includes epistemology, ethics, aesthetics, education, politics, rhetoric, science, medicine, biology, geology, chemistry and theology, and many of the authors may more usually be called divines, scientists, doctors, mathematicians, or even poets. In addition to short biographies of the writers, there are detailed expositions and analyses of their doctrines and ideas, bibliographies of their writings and suggestions for further reading. There are also mini-entries on extremely obscure figures and appendices listing anonymous tracts. All the major eighteenth-century philosophers are featured, but the most valuable feature of the Dictionary is its representation of a huge range of less well-known writers. In many cases the Dictionary offers the first scholarly treatment of the life and work of certain writers. This book will be an indispensable reference work for scholars working on almost any aspect of eighteenth-century studies.
KEY FEATURES OF THE DICTIONARY:
--the first reference work dedicated to 18th-century philosophers
--more than 600 entries, including all the main figures and a huge variety of less well-known writers
--a broad-ranging treatment of 'philosophy' that includes scientific figures, theologians, politicians and poets
--the first biographical source available on many 18th-century figures
--bibliographies of authors including suggestions for further reading; lists of anonymous tracts and mini- entries on extremely obscure authors; entries alphabetically arranged, comprehensively indexed and cross-referenced
--illustrious editorial team: 8 Supervising Editors and 95 contributors, including the most respected international scholars in the field
--contributors include: Richard Popkin, Roy Porter, David Berman, G. A. J. Rogers, John W. Yolton, Hiroshi Mizuta, Peter Alexander, Godfrey Vesey, M. A. Stewart, Stuart Brown, Sarah Hutton, David Knight, Robert Wokler, Knud Haakonssen, Richard B. Sher, D. O. Thomas and Roy Harris

Foods have special effects on pain, and research studies substantiate this, says Neal Barnard, M.D., in Foods That Fight Pain, a book endorsed by fellow doctors Dean Ornish and Andrew Weil. You can use foods to fight pain in these ways:
1. Choose pain-safe foods. Reduce inflammation by avoiding foods that may be causing or aggravating your pain.
2. Add soothing foods that ease pain. Different foods may improve blood flow, relieve inflammation, or balance hormones.
3. Use supplements if needed. Herbs, extracts, and vitamins can relieve pain.
Barnard explores a variety of medical conditions, such as migraines, arthritis, digestive problems, fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel syndrome, diabetes, herpes, sickle-cell anemia, kidney stones, urinary infections, and back, chest, breast, menstrual, and cancer pain. For each, Barnard explains the causes of the pain and what dietary changes are likely to alleviate it, with exercise and lifestyle recommendations. Barnard backs up his points with 30 pages of research citations.
Most of the recipes are quick to prepare, and include an elimination diet to avoid trigger foods. A nutritional breakdown (calories, fat, protein, carbohydrate, and sodium) accompanies each recipe. Following the advice in this book will not only relieve your pain, but increase your overall health. Highly recommended. --Joan Price
Book Description
Did you know that ginger can prevent migraines and that coffee sometimes cures them? Did you know that rice can calm your digestion, that sugar can make you more sensitive to pain, that evening primrose can ease the symptoms of arthritis?
Drawing on new and little-known research from prestigious medical centers around the world, Neal Barnard, M.D., author of
Eat Right, Live Longer and
Food for Life, shows readers how they can soothe everyday ailments and cure chronic pain by using common foods, traditional supplements, and herbs.
Dr. Barnard reveals which foods regularly contribute to pain and how to avoid them. He guides the reader to specific pain-safe foods that are high in nutrition but don't upset the body's natural balance, as well as foods that actively soothe pain by improving blood circulation, relieving inflammation, and balancing hormones. Complete with delicious recipes,
Foods That Fight Pain is a revolutionary approach to healing that will transform your life.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome Book, MUST Reading...Very well-documented.......2000-12-19
Excellent book from a physician who has researched this topic thoroughly. Many of the studies here are so informative and crucial to our health, yet you may not find them in other places. Finally a medical authority brave enough to tell the truth and the whole truth with all the science and studies well-documented. More than just a way to treat disease, this book helps you to prevent it in the first place. The chapter about the early human diet is worth its weight in gold. Must read this book...it may save your life, a wise purchase.
Excellent reader-friendly book!.......2000-02-29
Literally anyone who eats will benefit greatly from reading Foods That Fight Pain. This reader-friendly book persuasively sorts out what foods can cause pain and what ones do not. Author Neal D. Barnard, M.D., has some of the late astronomer Carl Sagan's special gift for explaining complicated and difficult issues in a lucid, lay-accessible manner. While the book recommends a vegan diet (free of animal products) as a good starting place, it documents that even normally terrific vegan foods such as citrus fruits and tomatoes make the "dirty dozen" list of potential "trigger foods" for causing pain in some people. A sample surprise: what you eat can cause back pain, because cholesterol- and fat-laden animal products can clog the arteries around your spine. The book is supplemented by a tasty smorgasbord's worth of recipes and a credibility-boosting wealth of footnoted scientific references in the back. After devouring this book, you will probably want to try going vegan (if you aren't already). If you do, you will have full confidence that it's an abundantly healthy diet and just wish you had made the switch long ago.
No Relative Pain.......2000-02-29
I just wanted to post a quickie review of Foods that Fight Pain. One of my relatives recently read the book and has since found tremendous relief for her arthritis. She has suffered for many years, always wondering if food could be part of her problem. As often seems to be the case, her doctors discounted her suspicions, telling her that food could not be to blame. However, she got a copy of Dr. Barnard's book, followed the elimination diet in it, and discovered which her trigger foods are--dairy, coffee, and citrus. Since changing her eating habits, she's had substantially less pain and she credits the book with her turnaround.
I think the book is a wonderful addition to the growing library of information about how foods affect our health.
Top recommendations from this Amazon customer!
Food Alert.......2000-01-22
It is helpful to know the bias or preconceived notions of any author before blindly following his/her advice (including the bias of this reviewer). I am glad I noticed that he was a vegan (very strict vegetarian) before resigning myself to a diet of water, rice and a handful of greens. For a migraine sufferer he bans dairy, eggs and all meat (fish as well), without telling the reader to make sure to eat every 5 hours and to stay away from alcohol in general until one finds one's triggers.
Also, he doesn't mention that hot, fresh yeast might be a trigger, but that the next day the yeast may be harmless.
I will state my biases up front: MSG is one of my triggers. And I am a crusader to have it labeled on food products, including the amount of grams, so that MSG sensitive persons can adjust their intake accordingly.
I know that when I am hungry, I will eat what is on hand and it probably won't be cooked, because I don't have a cook and I am in too much pain to even pop things in the microwave. In addition, when I need to take a pain pill, I must eat to avoid further nausea and I shall eat even forbidden or detested foods in order to get pain relief.
People on such restricted diets need a safe harbor, like crackers or cookies that can be found almost everywhere (unlike cooked pears and string beans) to abate their hunger, without losing the benefit of the trial diets; i.e. finding one's triggers.
Before a migraine patient starts an elimination diet, I implore them to first get a list of suspect foods from the National Headache Foundation, 1.800.843.2256, instead of using the vegan list in the book. I believe one's endeavors will be more fruitful (:-) if one has a variety of safe foods.
Also become familiar with ingredients that hide MSG (1.800.232.8674). Free glutamates that appear in food can turn into MONO-SODIUM glutamates when ingested. A list can be found at the www.nomsg.com site.
Each one of us can tolerate differing amounts, but we have no way of measuring the amount we get due to the clever way food companies disguise their ever-increasing use of the stuff.
The FDA admits that at least 2% of the US population might be sensitive. At their extremely conservative estimate, at least 6 million people are sensitive in this country and only a handful of them know about free glutamates.
MSG is not a preservative, but an "excito-toxin" that cons our brain into believing that what we are tasting is just downright delicious.
Amazon has books on this subject. Check for books written by Stanley Blayblock and George Schwatz, MD.
One food recommended by my own pain doctor is gelatin. However, the process that creates gelatin (description not for delicate stomachs) ensures that it is full of free glutamates. Also look out for malt, barley and hydrolyzed (insert name of protein here). Any soups, stocks or broths are to be regarded with suspicion unless made in your own kitchen until one is adept at reading ingredient labels.
Avoid soup and therefore sauces when dining out; it is not worth giving the cooks the third degree, especially if THEIR sources claim to be msg-free. I have found that restaurant staff are quite willing to review their list of ingredients, however, if they know their customer will become quite ill if unaware of the true nature of the food. Dr. Barnard advises avoiding meats merely because it has no fiber or complex carbohydrates. I hope the recipes included will tell the reader how to make a complete protein with the right combination of vegetables. The reason I gave the book 2 stars is that he does tell about international research results that are probably not found elsewhere and mentions herbs and spices that should at least be given a fair trial to help fight migraines.
However, it would be tragic for unsuspecting headache patients to waste weeks of using the elimination diet and not find their real triggers.
Sometimes it pays to be skeptical.
Easy to read, informative, valuable.......1999-03-20
This book contains all of the information you will need to learn about controlling pain through diet, including how brain chemistry influences sensitivities, sleep disorders, and chronic pain conditions. Organized according to illness, solutions are presented in an easy to follow program of eliminating potentially harmful foods. The book is chock full of delicious recipies that even the novice cook can prepare. As a sufferer of fibromyalgia, I followed the diet suggestions to the letter, and am now in full remission three months later. I now wake up pain free for the first time in over a year! The program should be followed to the letter, however, to obtain optimum results. Excellent book, well written and researched, Dr. Barnard should be commended for helping to change and better the lives of many suffering from chronic pain disorders.

Classic family recipes handed down through generations.......2005-11-07
Like other companion volumes in the "Mama's Kitchen" series, The Greek Mama's Kitchen: Authentic Homestyle Recipes presents classic family recipes handed down through generations along with anecdotes of matronly cooking wisdom, such as "Kitchen life is controlled by the seasons - create dishes from whatever vegetables are available that day" and "For that sweet, mellow flavor of the best pepper salads, you need to first roast (or scorch) the peppers." Recipes such as Fried Cheese, Roast Quail in Grape Leaves, Vanilla Custard Pies and many more capture the essence of traditional flavors, and are presented with extensive, explicit instructions along with a introduction to the nature of the dish and when is best to serve it. A handful of color photographs round out this value-priced compendium.

Beauty and common-sense.......2001-08-29
I got the book for the pictures mostly, a few months before i actually got my kitten. I read it several times then, for the writing style is entertaining and compassionate. And now I turn to it for all the good advice -- beside being a cudly book, it's quite down to earth in the advice it dispenses. For its format, it packs a lot of information, is well organized and a pleasure to read. Somehow it manages to pack a similar amount of information as the much larger and pictureless "Cats for Dummies". I would have liked more info on home health care and first aid. It's where all cat books seem to simply refer people to their vets. I'd like to be able to dwelve more into the subject. Appart from it, I'm quite fond of this little gem of a kitty book. It's a lot wider in coverage than what the title suggests.
Book Description
Many potters undoubtedly dream of the day when they will build a kiln of their own. Others may wish simply to make better use of the kiln they now have, or one they have recourse to. Again, some connoisseurs may want to know more about the kilns that produce the ceramics they love. For all
these people, Building Your Own Kiln presents the knowledge and experience that three veteran Japanese potters have gained from constructing their own kilns.
Hiromi Itabashi, who is known for his abstract ceramic sculpture, provides step-by-step instructions on how to build a small gas kiln that fires some twenty pieces at a time. Because of its size and ease of use, this kiln is ideal for experimenting with different types of firing and various kinds of
glazes. It can be built in a day and operated by one potter working alone.
Roppo Tamura, who works in both artificial and natural glazes, describes the building of an anagama kiln, with its centuries-old history in Korea and Japan. He stresses the importance of the chimney and the "empty chamber" in regulating the temperature and offers many tips on construction and
firing. Altogether he has built over twenty kilns in his lifetime.
Naoki Kawabuchi, who is known particularly for his Nanban ware, describes the building of a "snake kiln," a type that has a history of over 600 years. He chose this type of kiln for its ability to produce a slow, even temperature, which suits his style of Nanban ware.
The kilns of these three potters are profusely illustrated with diagrams and photographs, providing a concrete image of the building process and a virtual introduction to the role of the kiln in the ceramic arts. For all potters thinking of making a kiln of their own, as well as for ceramic lovers
who want to know more about how pottery is made, Building Your Own Kiln offers a wealth of information and shared know-how, provided by three Japanese potters with years of experience in kiln construction.

The Landscape Speaks!.......2000-04-13
Cotton Mather and PP Karan traveled the length and breath of Japan in a small red car, attempting to make the landscape "speak." Somewhere on the Kii Peninsula, south of Ise, what they'd been looking at finally began to make sense: categories and generalizations began. From this point on, their generalizations were tested and retested with the resultant Primary and Secondary Characteristics of what one sees in Japan: Paucity of Idle Land; Scarcity of Level Land; Compactness; Meticulous Organization; Immaculateness; Interdigitation; and Tiered Occupance among others. A nice explanation with plenty of photos by men who have been involved with Japan since the Second World War.

Wonderful Book!.......2003-07-12
I enjoyed this book very much and I think you will too! The pictures are nice too! Nice work Jillian.
PS: I'm the only boyfriend Jillian had in high school as far as I know, and I think she is wonderful and so is the book, so any bad reviews were not from me! I had to clear my name. :-)
Thanks :-)
I read lots of travel books and I loved this one!.......2002-09-13
Shanebrook's book is a fantastic read! What a relief to read a travel book that isn't so damn boring! I loved all the stuff about modeling and it was exciting to read about Asia. I've done lots of travelling and normally only read the mainstream guides, but it was great to get an insider's take. I found some great restaurants in Thailand, and have recommended the book to my friends who not only like to travel, but like to have fun. People who travel like adventure, normally, and anybody who likes adventure will loves this book. Great photos!
Entertaining!.......2002-09-12
I recently bought this book before I boarded a flight to Japan and found once I started it, it was hard to put it down. Exciting to read; Ms. Shanebrook has a light and airy writing style that pulls the reader into her life as a model and world traveler. The photos are high quality and very beautiful. Well worth the price.
PS It sounds like the last reviewer must have been a jilted high school boyfriend of pretty Ms. Shanebrook! Cheap Shot!
An inspirational and adventure-filled book.......2002-09-12
Jillian Shanebrokk's "Model:Life Behind the Makeup", was a tremendously enjoyable read. This book is filled with adventure and excitement and allows the reader to experience all the breathtaking and exotic places Jillian Shanebrook visits through her extremely vivid and sensual writing.
It is a tale about truly going after your dreams and reading this book reminds you and inspires you.
A popular model in Asia, and voted one of the top two covergirls in Indonesia, Jillian Shanebrook shares this luxurious world with us but describes it through her down to earth, humorous, and perceptive eyes. Her voice is unique and irresistible. Her style is free and playful.
Jillian Shanebrook never takes herself too seriously but she does take her dreams serously and this is contagious. I didn't want the book to end but reading it made me want to go out live adventures like her. I can't recommend this book enough.
Such a fun read!.......2002-09-12
This was a great read. I brought it along with me on vacation and I read the whole thing cover to cover before I got home. It's a behind-the-scenes look at a model's life, from her start in Indonesia to traveling all over. The model, Jillian, seems very down-to-earth and introspective about life. Her story makes me want to have my own adventure...

Book Description
The Politics of Passion is the first comprehensive collection of the writing and art of Dr Norman Bethune. A Canadian medical pioneer and a communist, Bethune gained fame during the 1930s while serving in the Spanish Civil War and participating in China's struggle against Japanese invasion.
This book sheds light on the man, the artist, and the revolutionary. It uncovers new historical material relating to several controversies surrounding Bethune. A remarkable document obtained from the Communist International Archives in Moscow, for instance, discusses why Bethune was sent home in disgrace from the Spanish Civil War. It refers to a mysterious Swedish woman, Kajsa von Rothman, who was Bethune's lover and who was believed by left-wing Spanish authorities to be politically suspect.
This collection of Bethune's writings and art reveals that politics preoccupied him only during the last four years of his life. Earlier, his passionate nature found expression in medical and surgical innovation, as well as in painting, sketching, photography, writing - from poetry and short stories to letters, radio broadcasts, and plays - and public speaking. The Politics of Passion reveals the many sides of Bethune's identity, exploring not only the life of a revolutionary doctor, but of an intense and compassionate artist.
Customer Reviews:
I love this book and so would any fan of Bethune but ...........1999-06-15
"The true artist lets himself go .... He rises to the light of every day like a giant leviathon of the deep ...." Bethune was a gifted writer as well as an artist and this book has ample evidence of both. It also shows his main strength was as a surgeon -- an innovative, battlefront, MASH surgeon. Imagine Hawkeye Pierce if he could write as well as he could gab and you have Bethune with the original Mobile Army Support Hospital. Who would not love this book? Anti-communists, anti-artists, anti-Maoists, and those who judge Bethune as more of a sinner than a saint. That would be a lot of people! But I come from Norman Bethune's hometown, I teach at Norman Bethune's high school, and I have been inspired by Bethune the artist and humanitarian. This book, The Politics Of Passion, gives great evidence of the Bethune we all love -- his writing and painting. This non-fiction book by Larry Hannant should serve as a good source for new artistic works inspired by the man who was the most famous whiteman in the world and who remains the most famous Canadian. Reading this book makes you want to do something for Bethune, to erect some kind of monument to his memory. They should name the high school in his old hometown after him!

Gripping AND Complete!.......2007-08-25
This book is both Gripping AND Complete. It may not be conventional in the way it is written, but it certainly carries you every step of the way. It will grip your soul and force you to see the depths of humanity. Both the good and bad. This is a must read for anyone who is even slightly contemplating reading it. My heart goes out to all servicemen and servicewomen past, present, and future. As well as thier families. Thank you for your sacrifices!
Death March.......2005-09-14
Have not read the book as yet but pleased with prompt delivery.
Such a great book........2004-12-14
I am a college student and I originally picked this book up to due research for a project of the Japanese atrocities of WWII. While I specifically picked up for the accounts on the Death March, I ended up reading it cover to cover. The more I read more it became useful for information on the Hell Ships and the conditions of the labor camps. It's a shame that while the stories of the concentration camps of Nazi Germany are told and retold the horrors in the Pacific Theater are barely talked about. The stories that the soldiers tell of struggle and hardship show the true heroism. I often find myself with them hoping them on. I completely recommend this book for anyway with any interest.
A First-Hand Account of the Atrocities of War.......2003-06-05
Author Donald Knox has taken personal narratives from over sixty survivors of the Bataan death march and combined them into this gripping story of the struggle to survive. On April 9, 1942, the penninsula of Bataan fell into Japanese hands. The surrendering Americans were then subjected to a ninety mile march without adequate food or water. Men were shot and bayonetted for sport by the Japanese. Once the Americans reached their prison camp, they were herded into a tiny area with only two water spigots. Hundreds of men died each day from dysentery, malaria, and starvation. Many healthy men were soon reduced to skeletons. Others simply refused to go on any further. Still others found that the only way they could survive was to find a friend to help them get through.
After two to three years of living in this nightmare, the American forces returned to liberate the Philippines. Fearing that the prisoners would be liberated by the returning Americans, the Japanese loaded the surviving POWs into "Hell Ships"; massively overcrowded freighters to be transferred to the Japanese home islands. Some of the men went mad, while others drowned when their ships were sunk by American submarines. Once in Japan, the men were forced to work long hours in Japanese factories and mines while still receiving little in the way of food or medical care. The conditions in the Japanese labor camps were as unimaginable as they were in the Philippines; little food and water and constant beatings by the Japanese guards.
I've read several oral history books about World War II, and this book is one of the best. Knox lets the survivors' stories create this book. I was in awe of the horrible conditions that these men were forced to survive under. It is a true testament to the human spirit that these men were able to overcome the merciless beatings and the extermely meager food and water rations they received to survive and return home. Anyone who questions why the Americans used the atomic bomb should read about the Bataan prisoners and what they were forced to endure. I highly recommend this fine piece of oral history. Read it and understand what some of the true heroes of World War II did for their country.
GRIPPING ... COULDN'T PUT THE BOOK DOWN!!!!.......2003-03-15
As a descendant of soldiers who were in the Philippine Scouts (they survived the March by escaping into the jungle), I found the first hand accounts of Americans who were there fascinating. It gave me a feeling of being there. It's a story about survival and the indomitable spirit of man. It's amazing what men will do to survive in stressful conditions and adversity. It separates the men from the boys, the strong from the weak.
I'm not accustomed to reading books in the first hand account style, but I found it more interesting to read the text as opposed to the typical factual style that a history book would have.
This a great read for you military history buffs out there! It's almost as good as sitting down with the vets and hearing them telling you their experiences.
Book Description
The hopeless yet determined resistance of American and Filipino forces against the Japanese invasion has made Bataan and Corregidor symbols of pride, but Bataan has a notorious darker side. After the U.S.-Filipino remnants surrendered to a far stronger force, they unwittingly placed themselves at the mercy of a foe who considered itself unimpaired by the Geneva Convention. The already ill and hungry survivors, including many wounded, were forced to march at gunpoint many miles to a harsh and oppressive POW camp; many were murdered or died on the way in a nightmare of wanton cruelty that has made the term "Death March" synonymous with the Bataan peninsula. Among the prisoners was army pilot William E. Dyess. With a few others, Dyess escaped from his POW camp and was among the very first to bring reports of the horrors back to a shocked United States. His story galvanized the nation and remains one of the most powerful personal narratives of American fighting men. Stanley L. Falk provides a scene-setting introduction for this Bison Books edition.
William E. Dyess was born in Albany, Texas. As a young army air forces pilot he was shipped to Manila in the spring of 1941. Shortly after his escape and return to the United States, Colonel Dyess was killed while testing a new airplane. He did not survive long enough to learn that he had been awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor.

Glad to find the book about my cousin.......2007-01-22
I was so thrilled to find the book written by my cousin, Edwin Dyess. WE had an old copy of the Chicago Sun's article written by him back right after he returned home from Bataan. After visiting Edwin's hometown of Albany and his gravesite recently, I took a chance and went on line to see if there was anything in bookform and BiNGO. Leave it to Amazon to have most anything I am looking for. Thanks Amazon. Read the book. It is totally amazing how one man could endure such terrors.
Must read "Bataan Death March: A Survivor's Account".......2004-04-14
"Bataan Death March: A Survivor's Account" by William E. Dyess is a very descriptive book about the Bataan Death March, a torturous march from Bataan to various prison camps. The march started on April 10, 1042, and it involved American and Filipino soldiers being stripped of their belongings and forced to walk about 100 miles in the hot sun. The soldiers were cruelly treated by the Japanese soldiers, usually beaten until unable to walk and sometimes killed right on the spot. Most of the time they were not given food or water, and when they were given food, the portions would be just a small bite.
The book gives readers a look at the Bataan Death March from an actual U.S. soldier's experience. Lt. Col. Dyess survived this horrendous act and he decided to write a book to tell the American people what he went through. The book was very well written, and it had many details of the march, details that no history text book could even start to explain.
I really liked "Bataan Death March: A Survivor's Account" because it gave me a sense of what the soldiers had to go through. Dyess' experiences helped me understand the awfulness of the Bataan Death March because he explained them so vividly, and even through his words I could hear the passion in his voice. With the author being a survivor, having a first-hand account of what actually happened on the Bataan Death March really helps readers understand the enormity of the situation.
All in all, I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about what happened on the Bataan Death March. It is a very poweful book that takes the reader back in time to World War II.

Book Description
A soldier’s courage brings him to his sweetheart. A wife’s love brings his story to life.
Zero Ward is the autobiographical account of Lt. Sneddon’s experiences in WWII, and contains his illustrations of the horrors he saw and lived through during his time as a POW.
Army Air Corps pilot Second Lt. Murray Sneddon was stationed in Manila on the Phillipines Islands when the Japanese bombed the airfields at Pearl Harbor, marking the beginning of the U.S. involvement in World War II.
With no relief available, the Air Corps units became infantry troops, sent to Bataan to defend the Phillipine coast. As supplies, food, and ammunition were depleted, Japanese troops invaded the island of Luzon and took thousands of U.S. prisoners. Thus began the infamous Bataan Death March. Under inhumane conditions, U.S. prisoners were forced to march to prison camps, only to endure even greater atrocities.
In 1944, with American forces on their way, surviving prisoners were loaded in to "Hell Ships." On these unmarked ships, the conditions were even more deplorable than in the prison camps. Many were torpedoed by American submarines. More men died than lived.
Completed and published after his death from leukemia by his wife, Fiona, Zero Ward is an incredible story of captivity, escape, courage, faith, and ultimately, of love.
