Book Description
Richard Brown kept a personal war diary throughout the whole of World War II. In it he recorded the war news as he perceived it, gleaned from newspapers, the wireless and hearsay. Along with describing the development of the war, he has captured an image of life in wartime Britain, with rationing, blackout restrictions, interrupted sleep, the prospect of evacuation and the enormous burden placed on civilians coping with a full-time job as well as war work. Mr Brown was a well-informed man who made his own judgements. His attitude to the war is fascinating, as he never doubts ultimate victory, despite being impatient and scathing about the conduct of the war. His observations range from the pithy to the humorous and scathing. Above all, his diaries reflect the moral and social attitudes of the period, and the desire to be fully involved in the war effort. They also totally refute the argument that the British public were kept in ignorance of the bad news.

Acclaim for the Bomb in My Garden
"This one book will tell you more about Iraq's quest for weapons of mass destruction than all U.S. intelligence on the subject. It is a fascinating and rare glimpse inside Saddam Hussein's Iraq-and inside a tyrant's mind."
-Fareed Zakaria, author of The Future of Freedom
"The Bomb in My Garden is important and utterly gripping. The old cliché is true-you start reading, and you don't want to stop. Mahdi Obeidi's story makes clear how hard Saddam Hussein tried to develop a nuclear weapon, and the reasons he fell short. It is also unforgettable as a picture of how honorable people tried to cope with a despot's demands. I enthusiastically recommend this book."
-James Fallows, National Correspondent, The Atlantic Monthly
"One of the three or four accounts that anyone remotely interested in the Iraq debate will simply have to read. Apart from its insight into the workings of the Saddam nuclear project, it provides a haunting account of the atmosphere of sheer evil that permeated every crevice of Iraqi life under the old regime."
-christopher hitchens, Slate
"Mahdi Obeidi describes in jaw-dropping detail how Iraq acquired the means to produce highly enriched uranium, the key ingredient to building a nuclear weapon, by the eve of the first Gulf War. . . . [His book] offers insights into how a determined dictator, backed by sufficient resources, can come within reach of acquiring the world's most horrific weapons."
-The Washington Post BookWorld

A news-breaking inside look at Saddam¿s nuclear program¿by the Iraqi scientist who ran it
No one knows more about Iraq¿s nuclear weapons program than Mahdi Obeidi, the man who headed its successful uranium enrichment effort. In the aftermath of the 2003 Iraq War, Obeidi voluntarily turned himself into American intelligence. Among the revelations reported by CNN at the time: In the early 1990s, under orders to hide the core of the program from U.N. weapons inspectors, Obeidi had buried in his backyard the capacity to build uranium-enriching gas centrifuges.
Now, at last, Obeidi tells all, taking us inside Saddam¿s regime and revealing the truth about its quest for nuclear weapons. He explains how he traveled abroad incognito though the United States and Europe in the 1980s and gained covert assistance for the Iraqi nuclear effort from scientists and manufacturers. He tells how he was forced to orchestrate Saddam¿s cat-and-mouse game with U.N. weapons inspectors in the early 1990s. And he captures what life was like in Saddam¿s inner circle¿the intimidation, the paranoia, the impossible deadlines. Most significantly, Obeidi discloses that Iraq never reconstituted its nuclear weapons program after the first Gulf War; the critical elements¿including the centrifuge¿remained buried in his garden until he voluntarily turned them over to U.S. forces last year.
Written with the pace and drama of a spy thriller, this eye-opening book shows how easy it was for a rogue regime to acquire nuclear technology¿and helps answer still-lingering questions about Saddam's weapons of mass destruction.
Mahdi Obeidi oversaw Iraq¿s top-secret centrifuge program and later became director-general of Iraq¿s Ministry of Industry and Military Industrialization under Saddam Hussein. In late 2003, Obeidi was granted asylum by the U.S., where he now lives. Kurt Pitzer (New York, NY) met Obeidi in Baghdad and helped him turn his secrets over to the U.S. He has reported out of the Balkans, the Middle East, Afghanistan, and Iraq and written for the Associated Press, the Los Angeles Times, the Boston Globe, and numerous magazines.

A glimpse inside Iraq under Saddam's regime.......2007-04-10
Once you get started you won't be able to put this book down. This oral hisory shows how honorable, intelligent people with the best intentions can be forced to do the work of a corrupt regime. Thank you, Mr. Obeidi, for coming forward with your story revealing the individuals and countries (including our own) that made the acquisition of nuclear-producing components possible, in spite of the nuclear ban. It makes the current situation of nuclear fuel enrichment in Iran and North Korea all the scarier. Thank you, Kurt, for organizing this story so well and making the scientific jargon so easily understood.
Facinating Account.......2006-11-10
The Bomb in My Garden was very easy to read and held my interest throughout. Although I did not know Dr. Mahdi as a student at Colo School of Mines, he was in school at the same time as I, graduating three years after me. That added to my interest in the book.
It gives an insight into the kind of goverment Dr. Mahdi had to work under and give in to.
Model of an Illicit Program.......2006-10-09
The book provides excellent insight into the Iraqi program throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. The most insightful portion is how they pulled it off. They needed and acquired materials and expertise from Sweeden, Italy, and even the United States. It tells in detail how they used cover stories to get their hands on sensitive items and would then use front companies to ship those items back to Iraq. Once the program was discovered, the book details how the regime attempted to cover it up. In one case, they literally tore down a building, rebuilt it, and moved the top layer of dirt from all the way around the area to cover any traces of nuclear material at that location. It is a truly facisnating book!!
Genuine truth from a wonderful man !.......2005-11-25
This is not only a trilling read, in part due to it's non fictional aspect but also it's a wonderful book because it reflects the character of it's author.
To me it is genuine and believable for two reasons:
- The facts, details and timelines are cross checkable giving the reader an insider's view of Saddam's infamous regime.
- It has the fingerprint of a critical and clear thinker - a scientist, sometimes naive but always good intentioned who gets sucked into Iraq's nuclear program.
So in addition to being a fascinating account and a lesson in political science it also contains a good R&D story !
Science has always being of great interest to me and on that note , the most memorable point of the book was where he describes the gifted hands of a fellow scientist which delivered the works at a tense and critical moment
"...and I realized that all the theory in the world can never replace an experienced hand."
But I don't want to lose sight of the book's importance in the context of the US invasion of Iraq. I am in no doubt that Bush had no choice except to invade Iraq. After 9/11 he was not going to take a chance of leaving this erratic regime in place to spray havoc on the west at some future date in cohesion with Al-queda.
Of course that's a hard thing to say after all the bloodshed that has been in Iraq since the invasion but if Democracy prevails it will have a positive ripple throughout the Arab world.
What would have been the alternative?.. I have no doubt.
#66 Most wanted man in Iraq once, tells his story.......2005-05-29
"This is the man who will deliver the enriched uranium," Hussein Kemal said to his father-in-law Saddam, nodding at Mahdi Obeidi. "He has already made great strides." "In less than 3 years," Dr. Obeidi writes in this book, "our staff of only 200 talented men and women had progressed from almost total ignorance of centrifuge technology to the successful enrichment of uranium and to the verge of large-scale production." How he accomplished this feat (beginning in 1988) is he story of "A Bomb in my Garden"; so entitled because of his hiding of a test centrifuge---the single most dangerous piece of nuclear technology---& detailed blueprints on its manufacture for over 12 years (buried in his backyard) while UN inspectors searched Iraq for just such proof that Saddam was a lot closer to acquiring a nuclear device than he was willing to conceed (an ability, moreover, he could reconstitute fairly rapidly when desired). Dr. Obeidi explains herein how centrifuges draw the heavier isotope uranium-238 from the lighter uranium-235 "in much the same way that water is drawn out of laundry in the spin cycle of a washing machine." In this way natural uranium---which contains less than 1% uranium-235---can be accumulated & progressively enriched until it reaches lethal quality (at over 90% purity). Centrifuges, however, need to rotate at over 50,000 revolutions per minute to facilitate this process; an engineering miracle in of itself. Only certain materials can bear the stress of such force and have to be manufactured to such precise tolerances that Dr. Obeidi sent dozens of his engineers & researchers to train undercover in the world's best institutes & high-tech companies once he was able to procure the requisite classified plans for such; as he (simultaneously) "put together a strategy for acquiring parts, materials, and know-how on the international black market." This he did in total secrecy, under direct command of Saddam Hussein's son-in-law. "It is difficult to describe," he writes, "the sense of total fear we lived under" trying to meet arbitrarily imposed deadlines from above---the penalty being prison and/or execution for failure. It's an amazing story; and the details of meetings and events of interest are fascinating: details of meetings with Qusay Hussein & Saddam Hussein, being threatened by Saddam's son-in-law, watching Colin Powell address the UN on satellite televison, dodging American bombs during the invasion, wooing German & Swiss industrialists and scientists to provide classified materials & so on. Once he even had to tear down half of his development facility---walls, floor, etc. and remove tons of topsoil surrounding it before UN inspectors---having surprised him by taking samples---would be expected to return once those samples (as he expected) tested positive for radiation. If you are interested in the Iraq War, Saddam Hussein's dastardly doings---or need to be convinced of such, this is the book for you. Even if you don't need convincing, this book is a rare glimpse into Iraq that you will read cover to cover with keen interest. It is well written & hard to put down. Cheers!

I like this book because it's NOT pop-psych mush.......2007-09-01
I'm a clinical mental health therapist who works with teens, and I have bought many copies of this book on Amazon to loan and give away to patients' families. This is easily one of my all-time favorite books for parents of teen girls, right up there with the works of Mary Piper. I've found that this is one of the more sensible and helpful books I've used with families, and some of my teen patients ask to read it (so they can keep tabs on what I'm asking their moms to read, maybe?). Anyway, my teen patients agree that this book is dead-on in its descriptions of depression, body image feelings, and conflicted mother-daughter relationships. The chapter on cutting and self-injury is particularly well-done.
I deducted one star because of the book's title: "MOM, I hate my life." Dads are barely mentioned, and this book presents this material as if it is ONLY relevant to a mother's understanding of a daughter. Ever notice how often books, articles, TV commercials, etc. simply assume that only MOTHERS are connected to their kids? As a male therapist and father of two, there is not one thing in this book that isn't equally applicable to an involved and struggling father. But a lot of great information is politely declined by the fathers I work with, simply because of the off-putting title. Unfortunately, Sharon Hersh's entire "line" of books use the "Mom..." titling gimmick, and the only prominent book for Dads and daughters (literally, "Dads and Daughters") is geared toward fathers of pre-teen girls.
Consider this a plea for better publications that offer clinically-valid tips for fathers AND mothers of teen girls.
I found this book to be less "preachy" (in a religious sense) than some of the author's other books; while a spiritual foundation is apparent, it doesn't feel like a "Dr. Dobson" evangelical appeal to regressive traditions. On the contrary, Sharon Hersh has some very progressive and well-informed ideas, soundly based in clinical research and her own experience as a psychotherapist.
Of all the books I loan to parents, this is the single one which is least often returned (because they like it), or the book that parents most frequently track down and buy for themselves.
pop psychology mush.......2005-11-05
I got this book hoping it would be helpful. It was very heavy on the side of psychology, which is of very little help in parenting or life. If a reader feels the field of psychology is worth while, they will probably find this book to be of use. While there were some good points they were few and far between. While readers of books can eat the meat and spit out the bones, this was something like trying to eat tilapia.
DAD'S CAN READ THIS TOO!.......2005-09-10
This is a marvelous parenting book - for moms and dads.
And as a father of sons I want to also understand the psyche of young women that ultimately will enter my world through my boys. Thank you Sharon for an insightful, encouraging book!
I give this to all of my friends.......2005-05-18
I loved this book. I have read practically every book that has been written on parenting teenaged daughters and this one is far and away the best. It is hopeful, helpful and realistic. I buy it for all of my friends with teenaged daughters.
hope for "guilty" moms.......2004-08-20
We're all guilty of failing our daughters at points - what I loved about Sharon Hersh's book, is that she encourages us not to sit in self-condemnation or to jump to condemning our daughters, but to mother from a better place. Hersh's book acts as a guide, walking before us, as we seek to walk alongside our daughters. Instead of fearing, we can look forward to what we both can attain together. It is a gracious approach to parenting that left me with the desire to love my girls with a hopeful heart. And her practical suggestions for thought and discussion are most welcome. We even took the book on a mother-daughter road trip, and had dear talks that I believe will be rattling around in their brains for awhile. Thank you Ms. Hersh for giving your heart to the mother-daughter relationship.

No frills instuctions, good for basics of egyptian cooking...........2007-02-01
I've had this book for a couple of years now. This is a good book that gives a lot of Egyptian recipes made by every-day Egyptian people. I recognize many, many of the recipes as ones that are made by my husband's family. So I feel it is a pretty good source for the basics.
That being said, it leaves much to be desired with the instructions, which would be difficult for someone who doesn't really know how to cook or isn't already familiar with Middle Eastern cooking. For example, the recipe for Ta'maiya, or Falafel instructs you to soak the beans overnight, then drain and "mince" with dill, coriander, etc... Now if I took that literally and attempted to "mince" those items with a kitchen knife, the result would be a disastrous effort in futility and frustration. I know that I need to "mince" them in a food processor, and not your garden variety food processor, you need a good one (i use the cuisinart), to do it, otherwise you will quickly tire out your motor, and will have to process this recipe in about 8 batches, with rest time between each (like I used to do when I had a smaller Oscar food processor). Not to mention that she does not give any indication of how finely the mixture should be minced. This is one example of where some prior knowledge of Egyptian or Middle Eastern cooking (or cooking in general) is necessary to be successful at cooking some of her recipes.
The set up is also a bit annoying, with the recipes numbered, and indexed that way (the index gives the number of the recipe, maybe #198, which just happens to be on page 95.) This is hard to get used to and I can't imagine why it was done this way, unless that is the way cookbooks are written over in Egypt. Not to mention that you may have to do some running around as one recipe's ingredient list may have you running to 3 or 4 other recipes.
She has a good glossary, and list of spices in English and Arabic which is helpful, as well as a list of kitchen utensils that are used in Egypt.
Some of the ingredients are not accurately translated, such as "Tomato Juice" in the recipe for Tomato sauce, stewed. I am pretty sure that she is not referring to Campbell's tomato juice or V-8, instead it should be tomato sauce (like from the can), all the Egyptian people I know that make this dish use the tomato sauce from the can.
I felt that the biggest drawback of this book was, after having read it nearly cover to cover, was that there were hardly any recipes I was "dying" to try out. Usually when I read a cookbook, by the time I get to the end, I have a bunch of scrap papers stuck here and there marking recipes I'd like to try. Not so with this one. Maybe more pictures would have helped, maybe a little more "tasty" of a description, I don't know....something to tickle your taste buds and get you feeling a little hungry.... Perhaps some of the dishes were too mundane (would you want a basic American cookbook with directions for grilled cheese sandwich, scrambled eggs with salt and pepper, or mashed potatoes? This might be helpful if you wanted to know about the basics of everyday American cooking but not so appealing to actually hurry up and try to make)
The directions were too instructive, often 3 or four lines, and not written in a way that made the dishes sound appealing. (no one could guess how delicious ta'maiya is by reading the recipe, and that is unfortunate because there are probably countless delicious recipes in this book that just don't sound that great)
For example, minced meat with vegetables:
Mince beef with vegetables (in this case beef, onion, tomato, parsley, S & P) twice or pound until smooth. Shape into fingers, skewer, and grill basting 1-2 times with cooking oil, or shape into round cakes and fry.
I don't know about you, but I am not running out to the grocery store to get the ingredients to make this tonight!
This is a good basic Egyptian cookbook. There are few of them out there, so if that is what you are looking for specifically, get it because there is little else to choose from (believe it or not, one month after I bought this on Amazon, my father in law showed up with the exact same book that he had bought in Egypt!), and this does give you the basics of Egyptian cooking. I have ordered her other cookbook to see what's in it, as well as another Egyptian cookbook that I just spotted on Amazon. I am interested to see how both of those turn out to be.
If I was rating this book solely on the fact that it is specifically an Egyptian cookbook, I would have given it five stars based on the fact that it is only one of three I have found (one of the others is written by this author)
If I was rating it as a cookbook in general I would have probably have given it 1 or 2 stars because of the above comments.
Practical Egyptian Cooking sans Pictures.......2003-07-03
This is an authentic cookbook, it's been around for almost 20 years, and I've happily made a variety of recipes. The instructions are brief, and helpful. The Iman Bayaldi is prepared different than the style I'm used to..and still very good. Most dishes have 6 or less ingredients...pretty easy to gather up! If it had pictures, I'd have rated it higher--it's so helpful to have the right "look" for authenticity. There's over 300 recipes. The recipes are for 4-6 persons, easy to adjust. The table of contents is sparse; the index can have you running around a bit through the book. Chicken gizzards are not under "chicken" but are under "gizzards"! Beans are separate from lentils...logical, but not always intuitive...not a big drawback! some ingredients are, of course, hard to find if not near a Middle Eastern market...the internet should take care of ordering mastic grains, molokhiya (fresh or frozen), etc...Most ingredients are easily available in the USA. It has recipes for the classics, and also for brains, pigeon, rabbit, trotters, tripe, sheeps head etc...this is not a frou-frou book!
If you want a broader taste of Middle Eastern foods, get Roden's New Book of Middle Eastern food.. to get a rich feel for Egytian and other similar cuisines which blend together...
A Classic for Egyptian Cooking.......2001-02-28
This is a must have cookbook for anyone interested in Egyptian cuisine. Samia Abdelnour selected a variety of recipes that are easy to prepare with ingredients that are available locally. She cleverly included a glossary explaining the different foods, spices, kitchen utensils and also some useful hints. This is a value priced book considering the amount of recipes included in it. I have other Mediterranean cookbooks, but I find myself using this one more often. It's size makes it also very handy to use in the kitchen.
Outstanding in its variety and amount of recipes!.......1996-08-26
I have had the pleasure of using this book in my kitchen for two years now. I can honestly say that there is not a week that goes by that I don't find use for it! Although it is a bit difficult to ignore the page numbers and concentrate on the numbers assigned to each recipe, the outcome is well worth it! This book supplies an amazing number of recipes from every imaginable region of Egypt and many of the variations for each. I applaud the writer's insightful inclusion of such items as a spice index at the end of the book, and technoiques for handling foods not commonly used by Westerners. I would have liked some illustrations to assist with presentation, but all in all I am very pleased with the outcomes of my endeavors

Book Description
Beth Chatto is one of the great 'names' of gardening. Her knowledge is rooted in over 35 year's practical experience, and she is celebrated for her use of unusual perennials, as well as her mastery of difficult growing conditions. Beth's beautiful Essex garden, created from wasteland in the mid-1960s, is a world-renowned site where an extraordinary range of plants is cultivated. In this book she explains how she has used different natural variations of the site to create widely differing habitats. Her rules of planting are not difficult to follow: select the plants that will thrive naturally in the conditions you have in your garden, and successful cultivation should follow!

A masterful description of one woman's garden.......2005-06-23
This book has a similar philosophy and arrangement by cultural conditions as Penelope Hobhouse's Natural Planting. While Hobhouse looks to gardens around the (temperate, Western) world, this book is all based on Beth Chatto's garden. But that's enough, as these are the large and varied display gardens at her retail and commercial nursery. The gardens are set in Essex, an area of England with harsher conditions (drier year-round, with a cold winter) than most of the country, and thus more like that of much of North America. While the book doesn't have a big alphabetical plant reference in the back, Chatto does have a few pages on each of many of her favorite genera. All of Chatto's books are worth purchasing if they match your local conditions (e.g., The Damp Garden, The Dry Garden).

Excellent Idea book for experienced gardeners.......2001-07-26
Unlike many gardening books, this book assumes a solid knowledge of gardening and has chapters on various types of gardens(shade, dry, open walks etc.). I appreciate that that many of the plants are less well-known, making the AHS Encyclopedia a good book to keep nearby while you read this. Has some great ideas for both plant and design choices.

Book Description
This is the compelling and at times harrowing account of the author's experiences while serving in the RAF during the Second World War. His autobiography recounts his posting to the Far East, where he served alongside those resolute airmen who fought the Japanese against all odds and to the bitter end, the survivors eventually laying down their arms. Then follows his account of the ordeal and humiliation of imprisonment for the last three-and-a-half years of the war. It records events in that momentous conflict in the Far East over fifty years ago-events that should never be forgotten.

Vildebeests vs. Zeros and Captivity in Japan.......2006-05-25
James McEwan arrived in Singapore on January 13, 1942, and was posted to Seletar Airbase as the Intelligence Officer for 36 and 100 Squadron. These Squadrons flew the Vickers Vildebeest, a single engined open cockpit biplane with a cruising speed of around 82 mph. With the help of surviving aircrew members McEwan has pieced together the astounding story of the brave men who flew combat operations in these obsolete bombers. Their most dramatic operation was their attack on Japanese ships conducting a landing operation at Endau, Malaya. Half the aircrews were killed pressing home their attacks through hordes of Zero fighters. The first half of the book covers McEwan's service with 36 and 100 Squadrons in Singapore and Java, up until the author's capture in March 1942. The second half of the book picks up the story on the authors arrival in Japan in November 1942. He spent the rest of the war at Ohama on Honshu where the POW's worked a coal mine. In August 1945 the author saw a strange mushroom cloud appear in the distance over Nagasaki. I very much enjoyed the detailed accounts of the previously neglected combat operations of the Vildebeest.
