      Book Description

Now back in print, The Life and Thought of Josiah Royce reappears in a substantially rewritten and expanded edition of the first comprehensive biography, originally published to great acclaim in 1985. Several years later a large collection of previously unknown and unpublished correspondence and other materials was discovered. This newly discovered material has allowed Clendenning to probe deeper into Royce's personal, professional, and philosophical lives and to strengthen his findings. The result is an even more revealing portrait of this remarkable intellectual figure.

Professional philosophers, historians, scholars of American thought and intellectual history, and general readers will all welcome this definitive treatment of the life and influence of one of America's boldest and most influential thinkers.

5 out of 5 stars Wake Up and smell the Tofu........2002-09-07

This book was a true eye-opener for me! I recommend this book to everyone I know who has Endo. I have used it's wisdom enthusiastically, and with fabulous results.

As an effect of this book, I turned to yoga. I changed my diet. I did alot of things differently. And let me tell you ladies, if you experience pain are you're sick of taking those pills, then get this book and read it every night. Make it your tummy bible!
I went from periods that were horrible: endless aching and pain, cold sweats, dizziness, diarrhea, shakes, even vomiting! (and 4+ pain killers, hot water bottles, and teas) to periods that were virtually PAINLESS. Lifestyle changes and diet, it really helped me out. Now I can work like everyone else and I don't need a single pain killer. Not one. Today I had my period and went to play raquetball. WOW!

What is most heartening about this book is just how it makes you fell informed about yourself. We all grow up feeling kind of helpless about the mysterious female pain of menstruation, waving helplessly at our family or partners over the years. it doesn't need to be like that!
It takes time too: my changes didn't occur overnight, but within half a year my periods were bearable enough I made it through without pills. A year later the pain was all gone. So there ya have it!

Here's a tip: NO BEEF! Well, try to get the red meats out of your diet. Especially not within ten days of your period. You'll see.... ;)

      5 out of 5 stars Great information!.......2002-03-01

I am 26 and was recently diagnosed with fibroids. This book offered helpful information that calmed my initial fears. The dietary guidance should be considered by all women. I especially enjoyed the recipes and exercise information.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You Susan Lark.......2002-01-14

I am a 35-year-old African American female and have suffered from fibroids for over 7 years. Almost everyone in my family does to some degree. Various quacks have prescribed painkiller after painkiller. Then finally I had a surgery and conceived, but lost our child at 18 weeks. A year later, a fibroid was back with an ovarian cyst. I did not want more surgery, so during the holiday I order this book and started the plan. During my recent ultrasound, examine less than 3 weeks later the small fibroid was gone and the cyst partial collapsed (part fluid it was solid) and shrunk. I feel great and whole for the first time in a long time. Thank you for having the courage to show us a different way. The book was balanced with options and I will recommend it to all I know.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of helpful suggestions.......2001-08-07

I have to admit, I've done a thorough skimming of the book rather than a complete read. But she knows her stuff and has some really helpful lists and suggestions. As a heavy bleeder and someone who was diagnosed with small fibroids (6-week uterus), I'm really anemic (10.2) and have started eating foods from the "good" lists (which, incidentally, coincide with the detoxification/cleansing diet my nutritionist gave me). There are quite a few de-stressing and exercise suggestions, and I just haven't been able to find that kind of advice anywhere else. If you can't do it all, there are lots of things to pick and choose from that are likely to help.

5 out of 5 stars Change your life.......2001-06-01

This book is a MUST have for any woman suffering from fibroids. After two surgeries i knew i had to take matters into my own hands. I read this book changed my diet, started used herbs, and exercise and my symptoms have disappeared. i tell anyone i know to tell anyone they know with fibroids to read this book. I agree with chigacojess that western medicine can do but so much. My doctor was insisiting that i have a hysterectomy. I'm 31 . NO WAY! Now he looks at me in amazement. I am no longer anemic, my fibroids have decreased in size and he can't explain it.Thanks Dr. susan Lark. She saved my uterus, and i am forever grateful.

      Book Description

More than a cookbook, this food-preparation reference guide is a superbly informative read, with useful information on everything from the cultivation of plants and new techniques in jamming to liqueurs and cordials. While many people believe they lack the hobby time to can preserves, Jamlady demonstrates techniques and ingredients adaptable to busy households.

For years, visitors to Chicagoland farmers' markets have counted on Jamlady's impressive selection of jams and jellies to add excitement to meals. This cookbook puts a dazzling array of foods often thought of as mere condiments front and center, within reach of even those home cooks with basic skills, limited time, and access to simple ingredients. More advanced recipes and methods teach more experienced canners the savory and sweet secrets to creating their own fine preserves. The extensive baking section and serving suggestions offer ideas on how to best showcase these preserved and enhanced flavors. Jamlady's decades of research and experimentation have culminated in this impressive volume, destined to become a dog-eared classic in the pantheon of cookin

The book is not organized very well - sections seem to be thrown in where they don't belong (there is an Old Timers and Acid and Pectin section right in the middle of the Mangoes, Apricots, Nectarines, and Peaches section). When using the index to find things they are on the wrong page(s) in looking up Peach Butter the index lists 108, 217, 242 and 227; only 242 makes a reference to peach butter. Some recipes are very detailed others make you guess.
Another thing that bugs me about the book is that it's written in the 3rd person. She wrote the book but every other paragraph starts off with something like: Jamlady appreciates the many people, the Jamlady and the USDA recommend, Jamlady cautions buyers, Jamlady is curious....
If you are looking for a solid informative canning book try Blue Ribbon Preserves by Linda Amendt instead.

5 out of 5 stars Jamlady Cookbook review.......2006-08-10

I have taken professional courses on jam making in the past 3 years. I am amazed with how thorough the jamlady cookbook is. I was especially pleased with the knowledge on the following topics: the french plunge method, and how to make homemade apple pectin.

The second point I will comment on is her canning methods. She is one of the only authors I have read who truly understands the chemistry of canning and explains it so well!

5 out of 5 stars This Jamlady Cooks .......2006-07-26

I have just discovered cooking as my new hobby. I wanted to try to make my own jam - preserves. The Jamlady Cookbook was just what I needed to get me started. Every receipe I tried came out exactly as it should. A great book for the novice jam maker.

      4 out of 5 stars Home Canner's Review.......2006-07-25

As an amateur home-canner, I found the book to be very helpful in regard to the theory of why jams work or why they fail. The technical info is great. From a recipe stand-point, I was a little disappointed. Most of the recipe's are something that the basic amateur home-canner will never use. If you want a simple recipe for blackberry jam, you will not find it. With some adjustment from other recipe's, you can make it work. Overall, I am glad I have the book, but it is not a "basic" jam-book.

4 out of 5 stars Knowledge worth digging for.......2006-07-10

This book could stand some extensive organization and editing but, in spite of that, is full of incredibly helpful information and answers that may take some digging but will get you though tricky places in the canning and preserving process. Her technical knowledge is massive and she helped us answer some hard questions about the tropical jams and jellies we make for our business. A must have for the bookshelf of anyone who is serious about canning or preserves.

Introductory chapters discuss habitats, climate, land-use, and conservation concerns. Professional ornithologists
and amateur bird watchers alike will find this the indispensable bird guide for eastern Malaysia and western Indonesia for many years to come. It is also an unrivalled source of information for casual travellers and ecotourists.

      5 out of 5 stars A must-have.......2003-04-19

Any serious birder to the listed regions of this book would buy this book.

It is the best guide of the region so far with excellent plates and useful details. What I find especially useful, particularly for the raptors, is that they show illustrations of the birds in flight.

The drawings appear consistent and the bird's information at the back of the book is easy to access.

The birds are categorised according to their family which definately makes for faster checks and identification, which I find important when in the field.

The spine of the book though is a little week and you might want to have it rebound before it falls apart - especially with all the browsing that is to be.

5 out of 5 stars Get it re-bound.......2001-11-29

This was the book that everyone who seemed to be serious used in Borneo, but if you are going to be out in the bush for more than a few days and make frequent use of field guides, consider having it re-bound before you leave -- many people I passed along the way were finding that the plate pages were starting to fall out.

4 out of 5 stars A good and comprehensive guide to the region........2000-10-11

Many newer guides have been published about birds of this region, but this book still deserves its place on the bookshelf of anyone interested in birds of South-east Asia. Illustrations are good, and descriptions are detailed and mostly accurate. A bit bulky to carry in the field, but not a problem if you bring it in a backpack. The situation with forest fires in South-east Asia (especially Indonesia) is growing worse each year, so get out there and see some of these extraordinary birds while you still can!

Here is a colorful new book that will be of special interest to anyone involved with ornithology or wildlife conservation. This unique survey furnishes a detailed, yet easy to understand overview of the wide range of rare birds indigenous to Java and Bali. Comprehensive in scope, the volume

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing and not complete.......2002-05-01

This was the only book I could get my hands on before my trip. The plates are good but incomplete. Many birds I saw were not even covered in this book. It's organized taxonomically and the descriptions are pretty good, but I try to ID from a picture, then I read a detailed description. It is a small hardcover book, so it is easy to carry.

      From the Introduction:
This book is designed to give the layman an introduction to each bird family, and by describing one or more birds from each, enable him to identify most of the birds that can be found readily in the various habitats of Java and Bali. There are colour illustrations of 112 birds, and text references to at least 120 more. A checklist at the back tabulates 433 species on the Java and Bali lists. Once the reader has developed sufficient interest to compare his own findings with this list, he will need to obtain a more detailed field guide. The list is not fully comprehensive, as there are some 50 additional species which reach the islands only rarely, as migrants off-course or as oceanic wanderers, and these are not included.

The "Field Guide to the Birds of Java and Bali" by John MacKinnon was recommended to me while I was there and is supposed to be the "most comprehensive" field guide of this area.

                  Book Description

The Family Context of Parenting in Children's Adaptation to Elementary School is a result of a longitudinal prevention study of 100 families begun the year before their first children entered kindergarten. Each family went through an assessment and then a subset was randomly chosen for group intervention. The children in both groups were then studied as they progressed through kindergarten and first grade to assess the quality of their adaptation to the school environment.

The text focuses on how parent-child relationships are only one determinant of a child's academic competence, social competence, and behavior. Rather, these relationships must be understood in the context of the role they play within the family as a system. It also addresses the recent challenges to claims about the impact of parents on their children's development.

The book sheds additional light on family influences within the larger social environment as a key determinant of the quality of children's adjustment to schooling. It appeals to scientists, professionals, and parents alike.

A gifted artist whose personal style and unconventional life made him one of the most intriguing artists of the late 19th century is portrayed in this biography of Charles Conders. A friend of Tom Roberts and student of Frederick McCubbin, Conder was one of the few painters of the Heidelberg School of Australian Impressionists to achieve a reputation in Europe. After contributing to the famous 9 x 5 Exhibition in Melbourne in 1889, Conders traveled to Paris, where he mingled with such fin de siècle leaders as Oscar Wilde, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Aubrey Beardsley. There he readily embraced bohemia and found himself forever in debt, while he lived as though there were no tomorrow. Saved from poverty by marriage to a wealthy widow, the painter nevertheless descended into syphilitic madness and died before the age of 40.

                      Book Description

Stubborn Twig is a classic American tale, a story of immigrants making their way in a new land. It is a living work of social history that rings with the power of truth and the drama of fiction, a moving saga about the promise and perils of America and the meaning of becoming an American.

Masuo Yasui arrived in America in 1903 with big dreams and empty pockets. He worked on the railroads, in a cannery, and as a houseboy before settling in Hood River, Oregon, to open a store, raise a large family, and become one of the area's most successful orchardists.

As Masuo broke the color barrier in the local business community, his American-born children broke it in school, scouts, and sports, excelling in most everything they tried. But none of their accomplishments could shield them from the sometimes intense racism that scarred their formative years.

December 7, 1941, changed their lives completely and forever. Forced from their homes with only what they could carry and interned in vast inland "camps," the family was shamed and broken. But the Yasuis endured, as immigrants have always endured, to claim their place as Americans in a diverse and sometimes troubled society.

5 out of 5 stars Japanese-Americans in Hood River, Oregon ??.......2001-03-12

I found this book while browsing in the stacks one day. I had no idea that Japanese had been imported to build the Railroads in the Northwest during the late 19th and early 20th centuries (this was because Chinese were not available... laws had been passed making their immigration to the US illegal), and mainly ONLY MEN. It was a real eye-opener (I have seen NO such information ever in any US History book I read in school, and I am born and educated in the US -- graduated from UC Berkeley).

This book is very easy to read and become engrossed into. I could not do anything else in my spare time other than work on finishing reading this. It goes a long way to filling in much of the missing pieces with Japan of US History before, during, and after WWI and WWII.

Most US Citizens NEVER heard of Min Yasui, a newly minted Lawyer and Japanese-American US Citizen (by birth) from Hood River, Oregon, who decided to challenge Executive Order 9066 by deliberately disobeying it, getting arrested, charged, convicted, and put into Solitary Confinement for the duration of WWII even as the US Supreme Court ruled against him regarding the Constitutionality of it. And, yes folks, Executive Order 9066 could be reissued today, against anyone (even you), without Due Process. You too could be treated just like the Yasui's, ripped out of your job and home, have your bank accounts frozen, told you had 48 hours to pack and could only bring what you personally could carry with your hands and nothing more... and then lose your property and home when you could not pay the property taxes (because your Bank Accounts had been frozen by the Federal Government).

You say you're a US Citizen? So were the Yasui's (except for Min and his wife, who were prohibited by Federal Law from ever becoming Naturalized Citizens -- a Law that was not changed until 1958!! Whites could, and Blacks after the Civil War in 1865 were added to the list. But Asians were never mentioned anywhere. It didn't say they could not, but it didn't say they could either. It just didn't say... and so the US Supreme Court ruled that Asian Immigrants were EXCLUDED from ever becoming Naturalized US Citizens. Hard to believe? Read about how the Yasui's coped with this issue. And the next time you eat an apple from a box marked HOOD RIVER, OREGON... you will know "the Rest of the Story... ".

This book should be Required Reading for anyone taking or even remotely interested in US History.

                      4 out of 5 stars A Families Courage.......2000-04-06

I just finished reading The Stubborn Twig today. I love to spend hours in bookstores looking for different kinds of books and am pretty quick at purchasing what I know I will like. This book intrigued me just by the title - it went right to the top of the pile of books that I brought home that day. I started reading it right away.

The story deals with how the Yasui family copes with the trials and daily living of being different. It also gives a look into how they at times fit in with their white (hakujin) neighbors and no one noticed.

The story is both touching and exciting as the reader goes through the generations of Yasui's and how they feel about the world around them.

I think that Ms. Kessler did a very good job of telling the story of each family member while weaving them into the importance of the famliy as a whole. I too come from a large family with generations of history. It has inspired me to start better record-keeping for my own children and the ones to come.

I never knew of the reasons behind the internment of the Japanese Americans during the war. This book not only gives facts and history but the details of how real people had to cope to survive. I recommend this book to anyone interested in history, and an admirable approach to finding the courage to start over in life.
