"Navy Diver" will make a lasting impression...........2003-01-17
It's been a while since I read this book, but remember details as if was yesterday. It didn't inspire me to be a hardhat diver, cutting away anti-submarine nets in the Golden Gate, spending hours in a de-compression chamber, or talking like Donald Duck in a heliox atmosphere, but the events related by Joe Karneke stimulated me to learn more about them in the years to come. I read this book around 35 years ago, providing a young teenager a view on a world under the sea that was real, immediate, and interactive with man the achiever. (I always thought it would have made a decent motion picture.)Buy it for the young and curious, and it may plant a seed of inspiration.

Meticulously researched!.......2005-10-04
A well documented study into the life of Louis Claude de St. Martin and how by discovering the works of Jacob Boehme he turned away from a conventional life to live "The Way of the Heart." He created a mystical society and his teachings and initiations still exist today. A fascinating read about the man and his work and how he influenced French culture.
In Light of Martinism-Best you can find.......2000-04-02
The book is an awesome biography of the Mystical life of Louise Claude de St. Martin. The author fully described the sequence of events of the life of this Unknown Philosopher. Excellent reference for the students in Martinism or traditional Martinist Order as well as a path in the search of Truth by modeling from the examples of the book.
Book Description
Ten steps to surviving a family rift, finding peace, and moving on
A family rift is one of the most traumatic experiences a person can face. It can have a profound effect on virtually every aspect of life, causing depression, relationship problems, and even physical illness. Healing From Family Rifts offers hope to those coping with a split in their families. Family therapist Mark Sichel addresses the pain and shame connected with family rifts and offers a way through the crisis and on toward healing and fulfillment. Uniquely, Sichel does not assume that every rift will or even should be mended. Instead, he offers ways to recover from any outcome, including:
- A 10-step process to come to terms with the family dynamics that led to the split
- Methods to find peace and personal reconciliation
- Skills that help to build a second family of people whose values are in line with one's own
- Techniques to fight feelings of guilt when faced with a family rift
- Includes inspiring and instructive stories drawn from the author's patients that help readers put their own situations in perspective.
Customer Reviews:
excellent book.......2007-08-23
What drew me to this book was the fact the author is a psychologist and has been through this experience himself. He can totally relate. The advice is sound and I now sleep better at night and am at peace with myself regarding current rifts in my family. I have recommended this book to others. There is some very good advice here.
outstanding.......2007-02-22
Most family estrangement books and "experts" insist that blood relatives must reconcile at any cost, and blame must always be shared: you may be blameless or a victim, but you must make concessions until peace is made. But that peace is often temporary, since only you, not other members, are forced to change. Challenging this "blood-above-all" sentiment is one of our last taboos. Besides discussing the usual healing methods, this book covers, in an accepting and understanding way, what to do when reconciliation isn't possible. There is no judgment present, only a deep acceptance of those rifts that are ultimately unmendable and sympathetic support for those suffering grief because of them. It offers ways to survive permanent rifts, such as choosing & creating your own new family. (Unfortunately, the family members who buy & read these books are usually NOT the ones who most need to read them: those "externalizers" always blaming others and usually causing the rifts.)
Life changing book........2006-07-22
Reeling from I family rift, I found this book and it proved to be a godsend.
A family rift feels like a death, but you are not dead. For a time, I carried the book around everywhere. When I felt down, I referred too it, it really helped. It helped me recognize though in pain, I was alive and that even though my life was not so great at that time, it was nonetheless a gift from God.
You are never the same after a family rift, but this book makes it clear that you can choose whether the change is good or bad. You will come to realize that you can't change the family member from whom you have become estranged but you can choose how you react to them and the estrangement.
Read this book and embark on a wonderful journey of healing.
Concrete and constructive help.......2005-06-14
If you are experiencing a rupture in the family,I hope you do get Mark Sichel's book, Healing from Family Rifts. I did. I wish I had it years ago. After 11 years of learning to deal with my only child's addiction, and surviving a divorce after 24 years of marriage, Mark's book is opening up new avenues of exploration for my own life.
There is great information and concrete ideas throughout Sichel's book. There are ideas to implement that help us deal with the problems involved in family estrangement. We discover ways to make meaning out of our experience - a meaning from which we can grow as individuals. Mark's ten step program gives us a way out of the trauma we have experienced. It will make you think. And thinking about our lives is always a positive good. As Socrates said, "The unexamined life is not worth living." Mark helps us examine our lives.
I highly recommend Healing from Family Rifts for anyone dealing with family dysfunction and fracture. We've got nothing to lose but that pain we are feeling. We do have everything to gain - most importantly, our lives.
This book is a must-read.......2004-10-15
Mark Sichel's book offers practical and helpful advice from the first chapter to the last. I read about the book in the Ask Amy column in my newspaper (she replaced Ann Landers), bought it here, and have devoured it. His insight, compassion, and courage to share his personal experiences helped me to not feel crazy about the situation with my own family, and his practical suggestions for repairing a fractured family are like a Bible for the dysfunctional family. I highly recommend this book. I think other readers who have been suffering as I had will feel relieved, calmer, and saner after reading Sichel's book. If you're having estrangement issues or chronic feuding with your family, this is the book for you.

Book Description
Next time you party, try a dip. Or two. Or three. Rick Rodgers, renowned cooking teacher and cookbook author shares 95 of his favorite dip recipes in his new book, Dip It!
Of course there's the classic onion soup mix, but why not make Rick's updated recipe with onions? For a Super Bowl or tailgating party, you'll score big with bowls of tortilla chips served up with meaty Hot Beef and Pinto Bean Chili Dip.
There are plenty of vegetarian spreads, too. Scoop wedges of pita into Moroccan Eggplant and Tomato Dip. The Faux Cheese Fondue will be a hit with cheese lovers. Rick also offers plenty of lighter dips such as the Two-Alarm Salsa or Three-Bean Salsa. Need an elegant dip for a special occasion? Try the Pesto Mascarpone or the silky smooth Double Salmon Dip. And many of these dips do double duty -- use them to bring a little something extra to your sand-wiches.
And what's homemade dip without crunchy, crispy dippers? There are recipes for homemade versions of Potato Chips, Herbed Breadsticks, Tortilla Chips, and much more. Also included is a complete list of vegetable dippers that will add snap and color to your table. Rick also offers lots of helpful entertaining tips from do-ahead recipes to creative dip holders.
So have a party. Take a dip with Dip It!

Book Description
An enterprising young woman in the early 1900s, Carrie Alma Hackett Hall was determined to piece a cloth block for every known patchwork pattern of more than 850 blocks. This new release makes most of that historic collection available to everyone in splendid full-color photographs and features over 200 patterns and assembly diagrams to help you reproduce the blocks in your own quilts. AUTHORBIO: Carrie Alma Hackett Hall is best known for her partnership in the book "The Romance of the Patchwork Quilt in America" with Rose Kretsinger. She was responsible for preserving nearly every known patchwork pattern from their era! Author Bettina Havig takes the historical approach to the collection one step further and features piecing diagrams for sewing and pattern templates for creating 200 of these blocks. REVIEW: Provides over 800 historical patterns from the collection of the Spencer Museum of Art, presented by a woman known for co-authoring another fine quilting guide. This hardcover features small color photos of each quilt pattern with notes on templates and original size.
Customer Reviews:
Vintage block Spectacular .......2007-05-12
Wonderful book of Vintage block patterns, makes cataloging some of those old orphan blocks great or making that wonderful vintage look quilt. If you like vintage designs you need this collection of designs.
Average reference.......2006-10-24
I like the fact that the book has a hard cover. And with 800 patterns, a person should be able to find something they like. However, I found other books on patterns that I like much better ("It's Okay if You Sit on My Quilt", "Once More Around the Block" and "849 Traditional Patchwork Patterns) and I have never used this book for a reference (yet) because I like my other books better. And I'm not crazy about the choice of fabrics that are used; there isn't much definition in value. There are quite a few applique patterns.
Carrie Hall's blocks the greatest resource.......2006-02-28
Carrie Hall Blocks are a great resource to have. There are 800 different pattern blocks to look at with 200 having the templates completed in the back. But if you wanted to make a block not templated all you would have it do is xerox the picture to a desired size and then draft it. But with 200 templated you have more than enough to chose from. I have made some of the blocks and used this resource to research block names. Not only does she have a copy of blocks, but she also will have copies of blocks that have the same name but different patterns. This one feature has cleared up many confused moments.

Historically accurate and informative.......2002-04-18
If you are interested in quilt history or in the names of traditional quilt blocks, this book is an invaluable tool. Carrie Hall sewed and collected various quilt blocks along with their names in what is now an encyclopedia of quilt history. I have used this book both for inspiration in my own quilt block making and also for historical interest (which blocks were named after political events, etc). Definitely one to have on your quilt book shelf.
Carrie Hall Blocks.......2000-06-02
This is an excellent resource book for those interested in quilt history. The more than 800 blocks were made between 1900-1935. Both pieced and appliqued blocks are shown in color. The pattern section of more than 200 blocks range from easy level to difficult. The template section is very easy to use. Each block is shown in color and then in sections with all template numbers listed. All blocks in this section have been converted to more standard sizes and could be converted to other sizes with relative ease by any quilter. A fantastic book and a must for any quilter's personal library!

A Growing Gardener
ASIN: 1584793554 |
Book Description
Since its publication in 1988, The Potted Herb has become a classic gardening and gift book. Beloved for its delicate line drawings and accessible size, this beginner's guide to growing your own herbs has sold more than 65,000 hard-cover copies. Now, in an affordable paperback format with a fresh cover design, the popular title will reach a new readership. Zabar, who tends to her own patio garden in Manhattan, writes in an engagingly personal tone about twenty-two varieties of herbs suitable for cultivating in containers. Included are instructions for training the plants into topiaries, preparing simple yet delicious recipes flavored with fresh, aromatic herbs, and creating wreaths, sachets, lotions, and other handmade crafts from herbal ingredients. In addition to the practical information, Zabar also reflects on the poetics of gardening and how it can enhance our everyday lives-even when space demands that the greenery be confined to terra-cotta pots and kitchen window boxes.

Glad I found it.......2000-01-23
I looked for this book on Amazon.com because, of all the many library books I have checked out to research my new, small, greenhouse business, this was the one so densely packed with useful information that I feel I should own it. If there are better books out there for a new grower like me, I wish I knew what they were! As I am planning to be certified organic, I appreciated that this book, although conventional in it's treatment of chemical use, also expressed the concerns for human safety and for the environment that all growers who do use chemicals should be aware of. The details about individual plants, container sizes, and sample planting to marketing dates are invaluable. I was beginning to think they were industry secrets since no other book provided them. I also appreciated the clear and concise writing.
Where's the beef?.......1999-01-02
Same old growing info, nothing about marketing plants or about preserving the enviorment. Its promotions state a enviormental friendly book, could not figure this one out , it seems to have used this to promote this well written book,. Note-- one magazine ad says, this companys name is the Enviormental Press, ( REAL NAME Admire Press) but not one metion of the enviorment in this book. Lots of the same growing info found in library, no good greenhouse pictures, all seem to be 20 years old.

Useful at moments but mostly tacky.......2007-06-26
I checked this book out at my local library and I'm glad that I did. That meant that I didn't spend a dime on it (very frugal, by the way)!
I found the section on grocery shopping useful but that was about all. While there were some gems to be mined here and there, overall the book reminded me over and over again that frugality can easily slide into miserliness over time. Not only was the virtue of dumpster diving extolled but the authors seemed to expend more energy in pursing questionable bargains than those bargains seemed to warrant. For instance, if someone decides to go dumpster diving behind the local Sears, you might find something, but is it worth it to get all nasty and dirty, subject yourself to discovery and subsequent loss of dignity, all for the mere chance of snatching a free pair of half melted Nikes? I think that while pondering the art of being frugal, the authors should have included the cost in energy and time versus the product they hope to gain.
I give this one two stars for its section on grocery shopping and the other two or three suggestions I found useful. As for the rest, it was either bad (dumpster diving at a frat house..are you just looking for a drunk, beardless youth to humiliate you?) or else it was all advice you would know from either being alive or having read anything in the last ten years.
Cheap or tacky?.......2003-06-23
I was looknig for tips on saving money and found mostly common sense items and a few downright tacky suggestions. You can be frugal without being tacky. While some of the ideas are great for people with a lot of time on their hands, time is money also and if it takes you all day to make homemade fruit snacks, what are you really saving?
Good information, new ideas.......2003-01-20
Cheap talk was full of good ideas that I had not heard or thought of before. I had been reading alot on frugality lately and was glad to finally get a book with some fresh, useful ideas. Borrow it from your local library today!(being frugal are we are)
Don't agree with knothead11.......2002-11-08
I don't agree with the review knothead11 wrote. She (or he) stated a couple suggestions that may not be very useful (for her). I believe this book is loaded with many valueable bits of information and great ideas in saving money. Not all ideas are for everyone. Everyone has different levels of thriftiness, and if you are very frugal, you may have already learned many of the tips in this book. However, I believe the higher percentage of people truly need this book and will find a great deal of the Frugal Friends tips very very useful.
Useful, but lacking........2002-06-22
I found this book quite useful and helpful in certain respects, but in some areas, I would question the practicality and truthfulness of the authors' claims. For instance, in the 'Beauty on a Budget' section, one of the tips is that no beauty products can prevent or reduce signs of ageing. While I understand that many beauty products on the market probably do not do all that they promimse, I do think that good moisterizers will go a long way in preventing ageing. The authors also say that it is not necessary to buy a separate moisterizer for face and body, but I have found that body moisterizers are often too rich for faces, and often cause breakouts and greasiness. I also expected to find help on issues that were not covered -- utility bills, for one, are a place where I would have welcomed tips on saving money.
I found the sections on buying food and household cleaners to be very helpful.
Be warned that if you're already pretty thrifty, this book probably won't change your life.
