Customer Reviews:
A Book for Anyone that is a Parent, or has been a Child!.......2001-03-16
Paddy Welles has written a wonderful book on relationships and how they work, and how they don't work. Rather than giving advice on what to do, she encourages each person to delve into themselves and find out what makes them tick, THEN go on to look at how that affects their relationships wiith others. Love is the key to finding peace, but first you have to figure out what love really means to you. As she states in the book, it's really easy to FALL in love, but it's an awful lot harder to STAND together in love through all the ups and downs that life brings. This is a must read for everyone. If you have been a child (therefore, all of us) or you are a parent, or are thinking of becoming a parent, read this book, and don't cheat. Do the exercises even though you may feel self-consious about it at first. It's really worth it. If you have had a love in your life that failed, or you are happily situated with a soul mate, read this book. It will answer so many questions. Paddy is a wonderful teacher. Take advantage and learn!!!!

You know it's cool to be a player, but it sucks to be played. That's the golden rule this day in life; either don't catch feelings or get your feelings hurt. But sometimes as much as being a player is the ultimate thing in this time, you got to also think about who you hurt. Because sometimes the human heart can over exceed the human brain, and because you're hurt you may do very bad things. Charlotte and her sister Kizzy live by those rules when their lust for money and fast cars eventually puts them and everyone close to them in danger of a craze maniac and a heartbroken son. Will Charlotte and her sister survive to play another day, or will they learn the ultimate lesson of What a web we weave when we first learn to deceive?

Book Description
Whether you're a novice rider or a championship racer, Bicycling Medicine shows you how to prevent and treat all kinds of bicycling-related aches and pains. Coach Arnie Baker, M.D., explains how to diagnose minor and major problems, offers do-it-yourself solutions, and alerts you to conditions that require a doctor's attention. A special section on bicycling physiology illuminates the demands cycling puts on your body, and thorough discussions of diet, exercise, and nutrition reveal the best ways to keep your performance at its peak.
Customer Reviews:
enthusiast123.......2007-05-06
A nice book. Easy to read and well-laid out. Not much to say about impotency controversy but virtually every basic cyling issue is otherwise covered. It helped me figure out my knee pain which I appreciated!
Outdated Bicycling Medicine.......2007-05-06
The author makes statements that are no longer valid, current, or that are flatly inaccurate. One diagram stated that muscles attach to bones by a ligament. This is not true. Muscles originate and insert into bones via a tendon, with some tendons longer or shorter than others, and with muscle/tendon transitions having different anatomies. This is important in understanding injuries and how to treat them. Arnie also opens up the topic of nutrition with the USDA Food Pyramid, another problematic scheme, since we now know that a high percentage carbs diet of breads, cereals and pastas is a source of stripped-down carbs, not good quality carbs. The medical advice for treatment of painful conditions is outdated. NSAID medicines are now known to have deleterious effects on our bodies. Current research suggests that NSAIDS interfere with the healing of tendons. And, especially for neck and back pain, chiropractic should be the first choice, since it has been demonstrated in several studies over the years to be safe and effective. Lance Armstrong couldn't have performed well without his chiropractor...
The author seemed to have a boiler-plate approach to presenting information. Hopefully his next edition will be more current and clinically accurate.
A No-Nonsense Approach.......2007-04-09
Anyone who rides can benefit from the great information and tips found in this book. You'll also learn about common bicycling injuries.
good resource.......2007-03-16
This is a great book for all who ride. It gives us a heads up on the common riding ailments and suggested treatments/preventions.
Answers all the BS I hear when I do tours........2006-07-30
For the most part, there are two kinds of riders in the world: 1) people who ride, ride with others, and have expert knowledge based on experience, and 2) people who read and talk about riding, buy only the best and most expensive equipment, yet have trouble with such simple tasks as navigating obstacles or managing heat loss. The No. 2s out there are obsessed with weighing pasta, exact calculations of cadence, heart rate, aerodynamics, and shedding single digit grams from their bicycles. The No. 2s also make the No. 3s (novices who just want to ride more) nervous about taking on an event or increasing their distance because they're convinced by the No. 2s that they haven't the expertise or elite equipment needed to ride 'seriously.'
This book dispells the witchcraft of cycling. It's about what practically happens to a person when they take up cycling even semi-seriously--particular ailments and stress disorders; simple explainations of how muscles, the circulatory system, blood, and body chemistry all work as it relates to cycling; and the low-down on even the most minor of performance enhancers, such as vitamin overdosing and sports drinks, which he doesn't particularly recommend and tells you impartially why you should or shouldn't use them as well as provides the home cookin' alternatives to expensive gels, drinks, and the like.
BOTTOM LINE: Authoratative yet practical, this book applies equally to the Sunday afternoon 10 mile "epic" rider as well as the 'professional' rider. It will explain everything from the benefits of beer to why you get butt cramps, and will never make such rediculous recommendations as "buy a more expensive bike" or belittle the relatively small amount of riding you No. 3s out there do.
It's the 'obsessive compulsive' free guide to healthy cycling for all levels of riding and riding experience.

In their books The Thrill of the Grill and How to Cook Meat, Chris Schlesinger and John Willoughby told grillers what they need to know to make great outdoor food--and how to have fun doing it. Let the Flames Begin finds the pair similarly busy, and better than ever on the how-to-and-with-what equation. Establishing their commitment to live-fire, as opposed to gas-fueled, grilling (each live fire has its own personality, they say, and is thus more fun to cook over, and it's the sole source of "that true, ineffable grilled flavor"), they then present the six basic live-fire techniques, cold and hot smoking through barbecuing and grilling. (Barbecuing is "cool and slow," grilling is not.) The pair's recipes are always instructive--each one provides detailed information on the appropriate fire set up, for example--as well as inviting. Flames offers 250 of these for a wide range of basic and innovative dishes, among them Cumin-Crusted Grilled Sirloin Strip Steak with Grilled Avocados and Chipotle-Coated Onions, Barbecued Jerk Baby Back Ribs with Banana-Guava Catsup, and the incredibly incendiary Pasta from Hell: The Next Generation with Curried Grilled Chicken. (This comes with a release form absolving the authors from responsibility for the dish's effect on diners and the ozone layer.) Included also are formulas for the authors' signature in-the-coals foil-pouch cooking, which yields sides like Hobo Pack of Sweet Potatoes, Apples, and Sage. With a useful section on gauging food doneness, a helpful glossary, and wise counsel throughout, the book promises more grilling thrills than ever from the guys who have the drill down. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
All the secrets, all the fun, and hundreds of great recipes for real grilling. They burst on the culinary scene a dozen years ago with the genre-defining Thrill of the Grill; now they're back to demonstrate once again their cardinal principle: cooking your food can be as much fun as eating it. The surest route to backyard nirvana, say Chris Schlesinger and John Willoughby, is to always cook with the real thinglive fire. To make it easy they've put more of everything into this new grilling bible: more useful information, more effective techniques, more imaginative and flavor-packed recipes, more ways to make grilling not just a technique but a way of life. With detailed descriptions of each live fire cooking technique, over 250 spectacular recipes, and advice on everything from accurately gauging doneness to knowing when (and, more importantly, when not) to cover your grill, this entertaining book will take you all the way to grilling masteryand we know you'll enjoy the trip. 16 pages of color photographs, 35 drawings.
Customer Reviews:
No more gas grilling for me.......2007-08-04
There are so many great things about this book that I don't know where to start. I love the introductions from both authors. They made me realize that fire (real fire, not the watery stuff that I get from my gas grill) is the way to cook food. My weber now has a permanent place in front of my garage. My gas weber now festers in the back yard underneath it's rain coat.
These guys really pulled it off. I probably own almost a dozen cookbooks about BBQ (a very generic term until you talk to someone from Texas, North Carolina or Missouri), but what you get here is a great book about methods using LIVE fire. I especially like the chapters on salads. Everybody can talk about rubs and spices, but it takes someone special to teach you how to grill sweet corn and turn it into a beautiful salad.
Best grilling book ever..........2003-05-17
This must be the best grilling book that I have encountered (and I have been a home gourmet aficionado for the past 20 years). The book has a solid introductory section where the authors share with us real tips on techniques, equipment and quality control, all of it deadly practical. Every aspect of charcoal grilling is discussed, from placing the briquettes and seasoning to checking doneness. All the recipes I tested are precise, easy to follow and leave little room for mistakes. Most of all, they produce excellent dishes. Not too many glossy pictures, which is fine with me. This is certainly THE grilling book.
For anyone wanting to cook over an open fire.......2003-05-16
Every cookbook collection needs a good and comprehensive grilling oriented cookbook. Let The Flames Begin: Tips, Techniques, And Recipes For Real Live Fire Cooking offers a wealth of recipes, directions and advice that make it an indispensable resource for anyone wanting to cook over an open fire be it a portable grill or a camp fire framework. This collaborative project by Chris Schlesinger and John Willoughy is enhanced with color photography by William Meppem and line illustrations by John Burgoyne, as well as a sections on "Summer Splurges" and "Party Planner". If you can only add one more title to your personal cookbook collection, Let The Flames Begin is enthusiastically recommended.

Lots of ideas for projects...........2003-05-13
I found this book very helpful when planning preschool art classes with plenty of paper bags available. Paper bags are cheap and recycle-friendly, which makes them ideal for class projects. This book has lots of fun ideas for making art and crafts projects, such as maraccas and wreaths. I think the ideas can be adapted for children of almost any age, 2 and up (for 2-year-olds, an adult can form the base, such as a wreath, from a paper bag and let the child decorate it with glued on things or paint...) I have picked it up from the library more than once and am considering buying a copy for my refernce shelf.

Worst book ever.......2007-06-12
If you must read a how to be a parent book, please do not pick this one. It is full of misinformation and terrible advice.
Some info.......2006-09-15
Here is the thing.breastfed babies DO NOT NEED anything other than breast milk untill 6 months old.IN MOST CASES formula fed babies can have solids before 6 months. To the woman who said it's not true ,honey go read aap opinions on it.As for bottle fed mothers having to hide.GO ON PREGNANCY WEBSITES FOR GOD SAKE and see how many women are offended for bottle feeding.Formula called rat poison and so on...if you can understand the book maybe you should just read few more...
Oh sorry about the voting.i didn't know how did it work.i was voting for the book not my review
Full of ideas for thinking moms.......2005-09-09
This book is full of ideas, tried by different moms, intended to be used with common sense. Interesting how the critics jump on pieces taken out of context, and leave their common sense behind--for example, the book says moms in real life do microwave bottles, so if you do, do it safely--watch out for glass bottles and plastic lines, shake it well so there are no hotspots, and test the milk temperature carefully before giving it to your baby. This is dangerous advice? Hold off solids to 6 months...this is dangerous as well? Excuse me? What I liked best about this book was it lay out lots of alternatives from both traditional and non-traditional parenting cultures, and trusted my common sense to do what is right, instead of prescribing a narrow parenting path.
Dangerous Advice.......2005-06-08
I am a nurse practioner in pediatrics. This book was brought to my attention recently by two of my patients mothers. She had brought her 4 month old baby into my office because she had burns on the inside of her mouth. The burns had come from microwaving infant formula. She had told me that she had read in this book that even though the can said not to use a microwave the book had said to go ahead and do it because all formula-feeding moms do.Another mother had told me that her son had choked on the hair from a make-up brush the other night and she also said that she had read in this book that make-up brushes are "safe" toys. So i asked her to bring me the book if possible, she did and sure enough there it was, along with other dangerous and well lets say silly advice. Her "sickness and health" chapter is by far the worst. Never in the 12 years Ive been practicing that Ive heard of treating pinkeye by squirting breastmilk in your infants eye. Or squirting breastmilk up a babies nose to fight a cold. I mean it won't hurt them but it certainly won't help either. However some advice is dangerous and should not be followed, especially the medical advice she gives. Remember this woman IS NOT A DOCTOR! Or even close to being one. I am appalled that she thinks that just because she has 3 children that makes her an expert over pediatricians, research scientists and other professionals. Who does she thinks she is! This book is so packed with bad advice I don't even have enough space to list it all(another reviewer did however). Bottom line, use your instincts, listen to your doctor and if you own this book...throw it away!
Many Baby Books In One!.......2005-03-19
I enjoyed this book on its first read and many times since. There are so many different topics (all readily accessible) that even the most experienced mom can pick up something new in just a few minutes. Ms. Nee's humorous and poignant touches bear witness to the privilege and pains of motherhood. She doesn't stay away from tricky topics and succeeds in practically addressing the varied approaches we varied moms use in making parenting decisions. The illustrations (of breastfeeding and burping positions, diaper folding, sling holds, baby carrying, even a babyteeth chart) are excellent, allowing for speedy reference by the blurry-eyed mom or dad. Topics are presented clearly, cleanly and succinctly and can be read in little chunks (perfect for the multi-tasking mom). I wish it had been in print when my first came into the world and enjoy giving it to others as a baby shower gift.
Book Description
Ambivalence is an eloquent exploration of the temperament of modern manhood, a thinking mans meditation on marriage and its discontents. This remarkable personal journey is a deeply nuanced love story in which two people come together to make a marriage workand how that union is tested by depression and other realities of contemporary life.
Customer Reviews:
Honest and Heartfelt.......2006-11-06
Donatich explores his roles as son, lover, worker, husband, and father. He grapples with the concept of manhood by examining unemployment, religion, gender relations, the immigrant experience, the pursuit of identity through lifestyle, and family life. With openness and honesty, he shares the bittersweet feelings of a "middle-aged, married, mortgaged, and mortal" man to celebrate and define the book's title. Ambivalence--and a good relationship--means being of two minds; having moral strength, not certitude; mindfully loving, not clinging to the blind faith of being in love.

Riveting - You can feel Lenore's pain.......1999-02-09
This novel, this thriller exposes the medical implant controversy in a real and telling manner. You can actually feel Lenore's pain and frustration caused by Dr. Gleeson in particular and the medical establishment in general. Mrs. Gause-Jackson, a TMJ implant victim herself writes a plausible thriller. You get a clear understanding that whole families suffered when medical negligence happens.
The plots thickens and twists as you go along with an ending that has the reading shouting "she did it" Hooray!
The Best Novel I've Read In A Very Long While!.......1998-09-27
Like TMJ medical implant device survivors all over the US I've been waiting to get my hands on this book for over a year. I've just finished reading it. It was fantastic. Howling Against the Wind captured what we survivors have been going through with clarity. The author exacted revenge for the estimated 175,000 survivors of TMJ medical implant device failure. Personally, the revenge felt damn good. Arlene Gause-Jackson is a gifted, expressive, writer. Howling Against the Wind belongs in every library!

an excellent translation of a classic.......2006-12-04
Valerie Griffiths' excellent translation and abridgment of the first volume of Ayako Miura's autobiographical Michi Ariki series is a pleasure to read. Miura's unflinching honesty about herself and about the world comes through clearly. The book spans Miura's life from the end of WWII (after she lost faith in all forms of authority, in herself, and in the line that separates truth from falsehood), through long and life-threatening illness, till she finds faith in the God of the Bible and gets married to Mitsuyo Miura. The second (as yet untranslated) volume of the series covers the early years of their marriage and the start of her enormously successful career as a novelist. In the third volume (also untranslated) Miura writes about her Christian faith.
The original book has had an enormous impact on Japanese readers, and, judging from the other reader reviews here, its message is meaningful for English-speakers as well. I found the cover illustration of Intervarsity Press's English version (1977) to be off-putting, however, and I wonder how much that had to do with their apparent lack of success in marketing the book when it first came out in the US. It is very unfortunate the book didn't reach more readers, for whatever reason. It is absolutely worth taking the trouble to track down a copy of this book.
A fantastic true story of the the love and grace of God.......2004-08-13
Other than Bruchko, I have never read a more powerful story of how nothing can separate us from the love of God. I found the out-of-print book close to 10 years ago when I wandered into the church library of a large prominent congregation here in Atlanta one day while I was waiting to meet someone; it had not been checked out in many years. But I learned when I was a young woman that in relatively unused, dark and sometimes dank libraries of old churches, one can often find hidden unknown treasures among the biographical books. I have since given the book to many of my peers, all of whom reported back how much it had impacted them as well. But this week I was blown away at a birthday party for my friend who helped me to know the Lord more than 30 years ago. One of her daughters, a gorgeous, elegant young woman who is a beauty consultant at a very sheik store in San Francisco, had flown in for her mom's birthday. At some point the conversation turned to great books, and this young woman told me that unbeknownst to me, she had read the copy of this book I had given her mom and to her it was the best book she had ever read. I had assumed that a large part of the book's enormous appeal to me was the fact that I was in the baby boomer generation and have had to struggle to come to terms with the War that so shaped the world into which I was born. But now I know such is not the case. So for any of you who, like me, would love to read a riveting true story that is more incredible than any fiction, get a copy of this book while you can - and pray that someone will translate the other 2 books in the triology into English.
Very Cool.......2003-05-17
This lady's life story has helped me understand both the Japanese people and how God's grace extends itself in the context of the culture of those receiving it. It would be fascinating simply as a biography of triumph in the face of life. It is made much more so as a spiritual journey's unwinding. Miura (I believe her married name is Hotta ?) also has a most gentle way of bringing other people's life intersections with hers into a focus I have rarely read in an author....One feels one is there in the room with the people she meets. Honesty to a fault was a breath of fresh air. She does not attempt to spline the curve of her actions and thoughts closer to some more genteel model. Reading this one is privileged to meet Ayako Miura and the Answer she discovers to the meaning of life in bold relief.
Hokkaido, birthplace of Miyura Ayako.......2003-02-12
The story is set in Japan. It's a very powerful and gripping book about a young woman's journey during the years following Japan's surrender.
The book is part one of three from Miyura Ayako's autobiography. The other two parts are not available in English to my knowledge. I really recommend this book for anyone who wants an interesting perspective on Japanese culture. Of course, it's set about 50 years ago, though... but still very interesting and as I said, powerful.
I found this book in a tiny drugstore in Idaho. So, keep your eyes peeled and you might find it yourself somewhere.
Gripping Unforgettable.......1999-06-08
One of the most memorable books I've read. Very Surprised to here it's out of print.
