Book Description
Historians have shown us the drama and sweep of the swathe Sherman's March cut through the South. Officers have bequeathed us accounts of what happened in strategic and practical terms. But for a gritty, day-by-day, on-the-ground view of what the march to Atlanta meant to the common soldier, nothing can compare to the diary of an enlisted man like John Hill Ferguson.
A Scottish immigrant and a U.S. citizen since 1856, Ferguson enlisted in the Illinois Veteran Volunteers in 1860 and shortly afterward began to keep a diary. The annotated entries presented here, from 1864 and 1865, describe life in the Tenth Illinois as the troops made their way through the Carolinas and Georgia under Sherman. In these pages the details of Civil War soldiering become real, immediate, and personal, as do the daily dramas of life on the march. Smallpox struck Ferguson's unit early on, decimating his company; food, when there was any, was invariably poor; and always Confederate defenders waited up ahead, exacting a heavy toll on the advancing Northerners. These events and details, conveyed with all the force of Ferguson's fine intellect and superior powers of observation, offer an unforgettable firsthand view of that savage contest.

Book Description
On a cold night in February 1951, Mel B. set out from Pontiac, Michigan to hear a talk by Bill W., cofounder of Alcoholics Anonymous. Like many who had found strength and sobriety in AA, Mel felt a great debt of gratitude to Bill W., as well as a deep curiosity about the sort of man who had helped bring about such a vast personal and social movement. After nearly fifty years, during which time "Life" magazine named Bill W. one of the century's most important Americans, Mel B.'s search for Bill W. culminates in this book: a fascinating, in-depth look at who Bill W. really was and how, from his own painful past and a strong bent for anonymity, he emerged as a powerful presence on the American scene. Over the years, through interviews with Bill W. and with Bill W.'s friends, colleagues, and family, Mel B. discovered not just one Bill W. but seven: the power-driving achiever, the fixer, the individualist, the entrepreneur, the communicator, the peacemaker, and the founder/statesman. All of these facets of Bill W. come together in this portrait of a remarkable man, which is also the story of his profound effect on not only the author but also countless others caught up in the search for a better life.

mediocre.......2004-12-23
From a recovery point of view, this book will not change your program or anything. It's one of those quick knock-offs that someone did when they needed money. I liked Mel B's work on "Pass It On" and the book about Ebby, but she really sold short on this one. You could simply read the chapter titles in this book and you've read the whole thing. And while vaguely illustrating her points, Mel wanders off into conjecture and personal opinion, and admits that's what she's doing!

This book has some great tips.......2007-09-27
This book has great tips for cooking for someone with dysphagia. I highly recommend it.
A Bit Disappointed.......2003-08-25
I was looking for recipes for my father who has difficulty swallowing due to advanced Alzheimer's. While I found the explanations, introductions and tips useful, the recipes were not of much use in our own situation. I would think that this book would be good for somebody who has difficulty CHEWING. For those with Alzheimer's, however, I'm not so sure. Many of the recipes could have been found in my "normal" cookbooks. Recipes that contain any opposites (broth with solids or hard/soft foods together) really aren't much use to us at this point.

Barbarians at the Plate.......2005-09-21
If you are a person who only knows how to boil water, but wants to look like you can do so much more then this book is for you. Marialisa gives you a lot of easy recipes, which can be made on the go. And lays everything out in easy to read steps.
Feeding a family healthy meals, on the go, each night is a challenge. But Marialisa does all the hard work for you, laying it all out, she gives definitions to terms you may not be familiar with, she even gives you suggestions in how to be successful in your grocery shopping. She covers it all!!
You can not go wrong with this book. I will be honest at first I was a little hesitant because of the cover (not sure why, just me). But I am sooo glad I got this book, it is really helpful in keeping my family of three teenage boys feed.

Because mittens are useful, warmer than gloves, and fast to knit, the art of knitting them is highly developed and has resulted in many traditional patterns unique to a geographic region. In Latvia, a young woman would knit mittens for all the guests at her wedding; in colonial America, mittens often carried a knitted-in Bible verse or poem. Folk Mittens details these and other traditions of various countries. The basic shaping instructions are clearly written, and all color charts are shown in color. Although the few monochromatic knit-purl patterns have charts that are difficult to read, most knitters will be too thrilled by the marvelous color patterns to notice. If you don't knit yourself, this would be a wonderful gift to inspire your favorite knitter (especially if you need a new pair of mittens).
Book Description
Offering mitten patterns from around the world, this introduction to folk knitting is followed by a generous section on the techniques of knitting mittens. Among topics covered are gauge, wool selection (including techniques for washing and felting wool), casting on, plait edging, ribbed and unribbed cuffs, and a long section on the ever-elusive thumb. Also detailed are techniques for hand-knit mitten cords, finishing, and sizing.
Customer Reviews:
Great charts, so-so text.......2007-09-17
If you can knit from charts and don't need directions, this book is for you. While the pictures are pretty, the charts are tiny, and I found the explanatory text weak. Note that each mitten comes in one size only - it's up to you to size up or down by changing needle size and/or yarn weight.
I agree with the other reviewer about the lack of information on how to do thumb gussets. For an advanced knitter, this could be a great idea book. For those who want more detailed instructions, not so much. A better book for those wanting explanations and details about folk mitten traditions is "Favorite Mittens" by Robin Hansen.
A poor sequel to "Folk Socks".......2006-04-07
I purchased this book hoping for something comparable to Nancy Bush's excellent "Folk Socks" and was very disappointed. The designs and colourways are crude compared to the folk designs they're based on, and Lewandowski's brief accounts of folk traditions are poorly written and patronizing. The book includes some useful information on the construction of mittens, but I would not want to knit any of the patterns.
great book.......2005-10-19
I gave this book 5 stars because the mitten patterns and the history behind each mitten is awesome but....frankly her explaination on how to knit them, especially the thumbs is rather pathetic! I have been knitting for quite a few years and have knit many pairs of mittens, and knitting these mittens, or at least just the thumbs were rather difficult to figure out. At least I think so. If her explaination on how to knit the thumb gussets where better explained, I don't believe the mittens would be very difficult to knit. The graphs in the book are very good. Very easy and not confusing. Even with the thumbs being confusing...I think it's definately a book worth buying. You can always go to a local yarn store to get help on the thumbs if you need to. The finished mittens are beautiful and I know I'm glad I took the time to figure out the thumb gussets.
Wide world of mittens.......2005-05-18
If you're looking for unusual, beautiful mittens to make, this is the book for you. The patterns are adaptations of traditional styles and designs from around the world, with well-written directions and explanations of various techniques. Most of them, however, require time and patience to complete, so if you're trying to whip up a few pairs as gifts, these are probably too complicated. But any of them would make a very special gift. Lovely collection.
An excellent addition to the knitter's library.......2003-12-30
I love this book! This book is the best (only?) mitten book I have ever seen. The patterns were clear and easy to read, the color charts were easy to follow, and the stories behind every mitten were interesting to read. I read the book cover to cover before I knit a single pattern. The book is also laid out well, with great photos and diagrams for each mitten.
This is not a book for inexperienced knitters, however. Some prior knitting knowledge is required, because many patterns have color-work techniques that are difficult to master, and some patterns' charts could be very complicated if a beginner were to attempt them.
Over all, I thought the book was fantastic. It is also a good reference source for charted designs to include in other knitting projects. It is a must-have for the well rounded knitting library.

Customer Reviews:
Eyewitness handbooks can't be beat!.......2002-04-09
Eyewitness handbooks are wonderful. I bought this one based on my success with others on such subjects as aquarium fish, horses, and other garden books. I have plenty of plant books with black and white drawings or simple word descriptions of the plant (NOT very useful) but I had none with beautiful full color photographs. This book is organized by the color (white, yellow, purple/blue) and the size of the plant (large, medium or small) This was not terribly helpful to me as I was trying to find plants that were suitable for certain areas of my yard: full sun, part shade, etc. However, I adjusted and soon came to like the arrangement. I found the index useful, although some scientific names will forever be foreign to me. There was an attempt to list common names with a "see...." reference, but this was not thorough. This, when weighed against the stengths of the book (ie the color photography, details of each plant, overall organization and comprehensive coverage), does not detract from its usefulness and my appreciation of the book as a whole. This book is an excellent reference book that will be a credit to my (small) library. Buy it and enjoy!
Book Description
People long to know more about God, but classical theological frameworks are not the answer for most of us. Rather than theological abstractions, we need simple, clear illustrations drawn from our own experiences to help us understand God better.Questioning God can help readers do just that. Each chapter starts with a fundamental question, such as ''Does God really hear my prayers?'' or ''What can I base my life on?'' Using dialogue to examine fourteen different images of God that appear throughout the Scriptures, Robert Don Hughes invites readers to hear God's answers to all their questions. With Hughes's guidance, readers will come to understand God more fully, feel closer to him, and be better able to explain God's boundless love to others in terms they can understand.
Customer Reviews:
A personal encounter with the Author~Great Book!.......2006-05-25
This book has incredible research and a very up to date commentary for what Kids do want to know. I have watched 4 kids as a regular Nani and have enjoyed the answers in this book as a great companion. I also had the pleasure of meeting the Author and having her sign a book, I must say that she has a personal character that emits true dedication to her family, kids and work. She is truly gifted in her personable persona and I was very impressed with her genuine countenance. I completely disagree with the Hoddie H review, because this book holds a plethora of new research and an Author of stellar personality!
Fantastic book!.......2006-02-11
I bought this book after I had my 3rd child and my 7 year old was asking questions about how the baby got in my tummy and how the baby came out. This book was wonderful in helping me to know how to answer those questions to my 7 year old. This book has great ideas and advice on how to speak with your children about everything to do with sex. I love this book! It tells you how to talk with your kids ranging in age from preschool to adulthood! It's the best book I've found out there on answering kids questions about sex.
Everything I've Heard Before..........2006-02-06
This book was good, but I have to say it wasn't anything I haven't read before. As a parent, the way I see it is that if you have morals, and are a good example to your children then it should be that difficult to reflect onto them the same values. If your relationship with your kids is lacking, then nothing you can say on these topics can help. First, you have to build a loving, respectful relationship with your child, and to be a great role model.
If you already are in a good relationship, then I don't see a need for this book. You can pull up info on STDs and statistics on millions of websites. So, while this book is an educating read for a parent who's unable to do these simple sex-explaining tasks on their own, I feel like this isn't necessarily the place to start. I guess what I'm saying is, those who could use this book won't be able to gain anything from it WITH their child because they're already lacking and need to repair other areas first.
I've also met the author, who has young children and I doubt has tackled these issues with her own kids yet. Although she seems very self-absorbed with herself, it causes me to wonder about the motives of writing such a book.
But if you're lost with your kids and don't know where to start, give it a chance. But honestly, I think your money would be better invested in counseling with your child. Books aren't the answer. Spending time with your child is.
Great Job! .......2005-12-01
The book was very educational. I found the book to be reader friednly. As a mother to a pre-pubertal son, these issues are sensitive. This book taught me to let the child ask questions then address issues (being careful not to give to much information). Thanks for such an informative book!
Where was this book 15yrs ago?.......2005-11-02
My children are in their late teens and oh how I wish I had access to this book 15 years ago!
This is not your typical "here is my opinion and here's a story" type book. When I saw that
8 doctors contributed to it, I knew I could trust the medical accuracy. My teenagers are now
going hear current stats, facts and my values from me, but I will now have the authority of their pediatrician.
I would highly recommend this for any parent looking for ways to communicate the medical risks of premarital sex with their children.

Book Description
For many actors, painters, musicians and writers, leaving Australia seemed to be the only path to personal and professional fulfillment. Drawing on the lives of people such as Dame Joan Sutherland, Jill Neville, Barry Humphries, Germaine Greer and Clive James, this book explores the experience of being an expatriate in London in the creative and performing arts. It is also a cultural history that traces shifts in the relationship between Australia and Britain, as the supposed colonial backwater began to develop its own national identity.
Customer Reviews:
A more complex view of Australia's cultural identity.......2000-06-03
Australia has an ambivalent attitude towards its expatriates, especially the more successful ones. This book pays due attention to those ones and also gives lots of detail on less well known ones. The speculation on cultural significance and change brings in many issues and ideas not considered before and the increased complexity is very welcome. It is a little hard to keep track of the themes and the people because of the format Alomes uses, but the material is there is you want to look for it. A very useful book if you are interested in Australia's view of itself.
