Book Description
Brodie Hayes is a former rodeo star, now a rancher--a cowboy, through and through. But when he finds out some shocking news about the circumstances of his birth, he begins to question his identity. Luckily, private investigator Alexandra Donovan is there to help him find the truth about who he is. Along the way, he discovers that even a man who thought he'd be alone for the rest of his life can fall in love.
For Brodie, love was something you did once--and for always. But is Alex the type of woman who can take on a stubborn man like him? Because there's one thing about him that will never change, no matter what they find out about his past--once a cowboy, always a cowboy.

ONCE A COWBOY by Linda Warren
February 11, 2007
Rating 3.5 Stars
ONCE A COWBOY is an engaging story of a man who finds out that he's not who he thinks he is. Alexandra Donovan works with her father as a private investigator, but on occasion, she picks up missing persons cases such as this one. A woman, Helen Braxton, approaches her, asking to help verify the identity of a cowboy she thinks is her missing son, Travis. The resemblance of this man to her husband is uncanny. Alexandra knows that these cases usually do not pan out, and the odds of Brodie Hayes being the woman's missing child was near zero. Despite the odds, Alex agrees to take on the case.
Alex decides that she needs to find a way to get a sample of his DNA without him knowing she's investigating him, not wanting to upset him in case he is not Helen's son. She manages to get into his house by pretending to need to use his phone while wandering lost in his neighborhood, and voila - she is able to find a comb with a few of his hairs in his bathroom. When the test results come back positive, that Brodie is indeed the son of George and Helen Braxton, Alex is afraid of the reaction she will get from Brodie, especially when he discovers that she's violated his privacy by stealing his comb to do the DNA testing. She is also worried about tearing apart a family despite the fact that Brodie is really someone else's son.
ONCE A COWBOY deals with Brodie and his need to find himself and his true identity. He also has to deal with a mother, who is not in the best of health, who had lied to him and his now deceased father about the fact that she had taken a baby from another woman. He grapples with this moral dilemma, because despite the fact that all his life he felt he didn't quite fit in with the family, always trying to please them but failing because he had his own life to lead, he still loved the woman that raised him.
Alex has her own issues to deal with. She has never gotten along with her father, who raised her by himself. She never knew what it was like to have a mother, and wishes she and her father were close. At the very least, she would have liked to be able to get along with him. And while her father disapproves of Alex's methods when it comes to her missing persons cases (she gets too emotionally involved), she goes against his advice once again and falls for Brodie.
This reviewer enjoyed the story about a stolen baby who was raised by parents who were not biologically related to him, and the repercussions it held for all involved once the secret was out. However, the chemistry that supposedly was felt between the two main characters didn't seem to exist for this reviewer. However, the characters by themselves were interesting and intriguing enough for the reader to want to finish the book. The story line was in a way complex, in that it dealt with both sets of families that were affected, and it made for one interesting book. However, the romance between Alex and Brodie didn't quite ring true, and it seemed that these two really had no business getting together, nor did it make sense that Brodie would even want to be with a woman who gave him such bad news. ONCE A COWBOY had a great story line about a man's identity, but the romance was not as credible as this reviewer would have liked it to be. - Courtesy of Love romances and More - M. Lofton
terrific private investigative romance .......2007-02-10
Dallas-based private investigator Alexandra Donovan has concerns over her latest case because she cannot see a happy ending no matter what she learns. Her middle aged client Mrs. Helen Braxton believes former Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association star Brodie Hayes is her biological son abducted from a hospital just two days after she gave birth to him about four decades ago. The client wants the sleuth to find out all she can about Brodie's life past and present.
Alex meets Brodie and both feel a strong attraction that neither anticipated as such desire has never hit them before. When he learns just who Alex is and the information about him she believes is the truth, he is overwhelmed because he now wonders just who Brodie Hayes truly is even as he knows one thing for certain, he loves Alex.
ONCE A COWBOY is a terrific private investigative romance as the attraction between the professional sleuth and the retired professional rodeo participant is overwhelmed by her findings; that she knew before hand would lead to someone being angry and disappointed and ready to shoot the messenger. Thus it is a stunned Brodie going through a form of the steps of grieving while also schizoid like falling in love with the bearer of bad news. Linda Warren's latest contemporary into a must read family drama.

I hate to read but this book made me read on.......2001-06-02
Walt Garrison is a true cowboy who became a Cowboy. His wit is dry and his humor is natural. This is a great story about how Walt went from a tough as a boot rodeo cowboy to a hard nosed, not big enough, not fast enough Dallas Cowboy. Full of humor throughout. I rarely laugh out loud but this kind of humor got to me. If you remember Walt Garrison from the NFL or the Skoal commericals "Just a pinch between my cheek and gums" you'll be able to here his hard county accent when you read it which adds to the humor. If you can find this book...read it, you won't be disappointed.

This book should be read by all 70's Dallas Cowboys fans........1999-06-26
I checked this book out from my local Libary and read it and my mom did the same. When the locker room was talked about I almost wish I was in there. It was a awsome book!
Great Book for any fan of The 70's Cowboys.......1998-11-01
I have read this book quite a few times and it never gets old. It is the funniest sports book I have ever read and any old Cowboy Fan will feel the same way. Enjoy and great reading.

Book Description
From his eyewitness adventures in the storming of Iwo Jima with the 4th Marines to his induction into the US Navy Seabees, Nottingham provides a sometimes stark and sometimes amusing description of life in the military.
Born in Sheridan and raised in Big Horn, Wyoming, Nottingham flashes to events which conditioned his response to challenges. Frequent references to people who influenced his life provide interesting glimpses into factors affecting his path to family and career.
If one of the vignettes in The Greatest Generation by Tom Brokaw were to be expanded, it might look very much like the account in Once a Cowboy.

Victoria Moran wasn't always as slim and serene as she appears now. For 33 years, she "lunged" at food, bingeing and dieting, rarely losing weight for more than a few weeks at a time. Then 18 years ago, she adopted the principles of self-acceptance, self-nurturing, and spirituality she describes in this book--and lost 60 pounds for good. She learned to live without obsessing about either weight or food, relying on "grace and good sense."
Moran's 101 "simple secrets"--each two to three pages long--are sometimes obvious, sometimes provocative, sometimes profound. Some, like "accept yourself today," "walk more," and "get a support system" seem self-evident, but Moran digs into the psychological components that might be holding you back. A few seem unusual, such as "in the beginning, eat out" (reason: when you eat in a restaurant, it's clear when the meal is over) and "visit an art museum" (to recognize the beauty of voluptuous women).
Moran's style is warm, welcoming, and strong, like a good friend who has found the answers you seek and won't let you off the hook. Highly recommended for emotional eaters who are ready to change the behavior and attitudes that are stopping them from reaching their goals. --Joan Price
Book Description
A bestselling self-help author's proven prescription for losing weight and keeping it off with no pills, no gadgets, no gimmicks, and no dieting
Each year, Americans invest more time, more energy, and more money--$33 billion! --trying to lose weight. Yet, the rates of obesity and related illnesses, such as diabetes and heart disease, continue to climb at an alarming pace. Statistically, heroin addicts have better odds of kicking their habit than food junkies do of kicking theirs. After decades of crash dieting and self-recrimination, Victoria Moran chanced upon a very basic truth about weight loss that allowed her to lose 60 pounds and keep it off for 17 years and counting. In Fit from Within, she shares with you what she learned and outlines a complete mind-body approach to attaining and maintaining your ideal weight.
Writing with the sensitivity of one who's been there, she helps you to understand and confront the emotional and spiritual roots of your unhealthy relationship with food and to make the personal transformation from a prisoner of food to being free to live a happier, healthier, more fulfilling life.
"This is the book everyone plagued with extra pounds has been waiting for. Fresh, clear, and compassionate, and--this is the clincher--it works." --Richard Carlson, author of Don't Sweat the Small Stuff

Fit from within. . ........2007-05-12
I found this book very insightful. It is written by a woman who lost weight and has kept it off for a number of years. Victoria Moran's view of the other side of weight loss (maintenance) will be something I will revisit when I achieve that goal. This book is uplifting and down to earth.
Great insight.......2006-07-03
I like the writing style of this author. Her words are inspiring and I found the book helpful. Can't wait to read her others.
Lose weight by tuning your mind and behavior.......2006-03-18
The secret to losing weight is creating a program that you can stick with. This books reveals all of the things that you must do in order to lose weight and keep it off for life, most importantly of which is the ability to tune your mind to succeed.
Victoria includes several ideas that you can incorporate into your own unique program.
Read this book and highlight all of the ideas and solutions that you can use and refer back to the book as often as possible. I keep a copy of this book in my car and I read from it daily.
Excellent book.......2005-12-01
I love this book. It's not really a diet book but a book that teaches you to change your attitudes toward food, your body, and your life. I found it inspiring and I have read it over and over again. Victorian Moran writes in a heartfelt and clear way. A must read for overeaters and people who have issues with food.
Wonderfully Positive.......2005-09-25
I bought this book for a friend who has been struggling with her weight for years. The reason that I chose this book is because the theme that seems to ring loudly throughout is - LOVE THYSELF!!
This is not a diet book, or a fitness book in the traditional sense. It's a book that guides you to finding your inner joy FIRST. From this joy and acceptance, one learns to care for their bodies: embracing their accomplishments instead of beating themselves up for falling short of the "goal".
The title is true - these are simple secrets to change your body. They are completely do-able. From this simplicity, you can make lifetime changes...

Not What I Expected...Not Kid Friendly Foods.......2006-11-16
This cookbook was a huge dissappointment to me. I was expecting to open the book and find great ideas and recipes to make family meals a little more healthy and exciting again! Just a few of the recipes look ok to me...but I am adult. My kids would not like any of these recipes, I am sure! Scandinavian Beet Burgers hmmm, try serving that to a 14 year old! Tibetan Boetuk..what is that? So, to sum it all up in one thought...
this is one cookbook that will grow old in a book shelf of other dust gathering bad purchases. My advice is to go see it in the book store first if you think you may still be interesed. I would have chosen to pass on this one if I had taken my own advice and previewed it first!!!
Not for beginners.......2006-07-25
I was really disappointed with this book - I bought it about a year ago and # of times used = 0. I was hoping this would be more traditional, familiar meals that could be prepared in 30 minutes, but no such luck. Half of the recipes have titles that I've never heard of, and most have ingredients that you wouldn't find at your every day grocery store. I wouldn't even know what would be a suitable substitute. Nothing even sounds appetizing. If you were already familiar with cooking, this book may be of more use, but as a beginner looking for some quick, healthy recipes for my new family, this did not work out.

Customer Reviews:
Well illustrated and realistic projects for beginners.......2006-06-12
I am fairly new to knitting and this book inspires me to expand my skills. It is generously illustrated and the projects are realistic for a beginner but still interesting for an intermediate level knitter. There is a good description (with illustrations) of basic terms such as yarnover (yo) and increase (inc) on the fold out front and back covers, for easy reference. There is a short section on correcting mistakes (also illustrated) such as dropped stitches. Very good value, and a book I will give as a gift to other new knitters.
Want to learn to knit? Have no one to teach you???.......2005-11-23
THIS is the book I've been looking for!!! I know basic knit and purl, cast on and off, and one way to increase or decrease. But I've made very few things because I have no confidence to actually tackle a "real" pattern and pattern instructions, never mind pattern stitches that go beyond knit and purl.
Even if I knew nothing at all, though, I'd be excited about this book. It doesn't OVERWHELM you with information, and the projects are TRULY beginner level without being completely useless at the same time. I'd have bought this book for many of the projects included, alone! Just enough to build my confidence with the tools and develop my technique! NO double points in the book, that I've seen, even though there are a couple of hat projects and a pair of socks! If I patiently work my way through each and every lesson included I am CERTAIN I will be ready to try some of the other patterns I've wanted to make.
From here, I will work my way through "The Sweater Workshop" by Jacqueline Fee. I've had it for a couple of years now, but it's TOO much at once! She takes you through the steps slowly, but I needed a step IN BETWEEN that book and what I already know. I believe after working through First Knits, I'll be excited... rather than dreading... working my way through Sweater Workshop! I'll be ready for plackets and lacing and swiss darning, etc! Maybe even double points after that!
"The Sweater Workshop" does NOT have the wonderful full color instruction photos in First Knits, but after working through First Knits, that won't be as big of an issue. After working through both books, I'll have the basic skills to make most projects that interest me. So, the two together are the best thing I've got with no one nearby to teach me! (Yes, I *could* probably go to a knitting shop for lessons, but I have health and caretaking issues that makes that a problem. Plus, I find it intimidating!)
If this sounds familiar to you, I STRONGLY suggest you take a look at First Knits. Use the yarn types recommended, if not the same one, one similar in texture and weight, and the needles and supplies recommended for each project... and master each lesson and project. If nothing else, you'll have some nice gifts and build CONFIDENCE to go from here. GREAT pictures show you the way through each step and you get just enough, although sufficient, information to build your skills without so much detail you break out in a sweat before you even begin!
A TRULY "First Knits" book! Thank you, Luise Roberts and Kate Haxell! Well done! I can't WAIT to get started! In fact, that's what I'm going to do right now!
Good first book for beginners.......2005-07-04
The best thing about the book are the patterns as they are all knitted flat on two needles. A beginner will be able to knit bags, hats, mittens, sock, once you master the knit & purls & decreases. There are also color changing projects and instructions which can make pretty gifts for friends.
The projects have step by step instructions with pictures on the knitted item in phases. The instructions on how to do the basics are ok but felt that they could have added more pictures in it.

Exquisite patterns! Even my husband thought so!.......2007-10-05
A beautiful book with fantastic photography and exquisite modern baby knits. They have chosen probably the most hideous outfit from the whole collection to put on the front, so ignore the cover. Totally worth buying!
Beautiful things.......2007-09-22
This book has some of the most BEAUTIFUL baby clothes I have seen yet. The outfit on the cover is NOT one of them. So don't judge this book by the cover.

Compilation of Patterns from Interweave Knits Issues.......2007-10-09
If you are a longtime subscriber to Interweave Knits, and if you saved back issues, you won't need this book. This is a convenience volume for people who missed subscribing and want some of the classic patterns that were offered over the years.
I've subscribed since Issue #1, and strangely, my faves were not included in the book, but I think that most knitters would find the selection varied and useful. Of the patterns included, the Pearl Buck swing coat and the Burmese Rings pullover are notable.
The contents include:
Man's Brioche Best
Cambridge Jacket
Pearl Buck Swing Coat
Forest path stole
Icarus shawl
lotus blossom tank
ruffle tank
vip cardigan
lace piegnoir
salt peanuts
cabaret raglan
basketweave pullover
marcel's sweater
marseilles pullover
simply marilyn
Kritin's carryall
weekend getaway satchel
threepenny pullover
striped fringe scarf
water garden fair isle
burma rings pullover
lite lopi pullover
millenium argyle vest
union square market pullover
stripes go round blouse
As you can see, it tends to pullovers and sweaters, with a few scarves, shawls, and two bags. If you have trouble finding back issues (which are somewhat scarce) then this book may be helpful to have some of the past designs on hand for perusal and knitting for yourself or for others.
Pretty dissapointing.......2007-10-08
Expected better out of Interweave. With all the glorious patterns the mag presents, the most mundane seem to have been picked as the "best". Chosen by a committee made up of folks with very different tastes, nmost likely, which is maybe why it's a boring book. Really too bad.
Gets 3 stars anyway because the pattrns are nice, and knittable, and the tips are decent, but this sure isn't nearly the best of what's in my stack of saved Interweaves!
Don't need duplicates.......2007-10-04
If you have never subscribed to Interweave Knits (I.K.), this is an excellent book (or if you are a new knitter & just starting a collection of great patterns). The selection really is the best of I.K.
Otherwise, save your money and use the pattern index on I.K.'s website to find the patterns in your existing magazine collection (I printed a copy, it is very useful). Of the 25 patterns in the book, I already have copies of 24 of them available. And have knitted two already (Simply Marilyn and Icarus). This is the sentiment of my knitting group and guild, also. We might have purchased if it included half new patterns and half old, but it is redundant for long-term knitters.
No fug.......2007-10-03
I have to say there isn't a single fugly garment in this entire book. That's saying something.

Book Description
There is one question, which every woman in this country (and increasing numbers of men), ask with increasing frequency as they get older, "What can I do to stay young and good-looking for as long as possible?" In "Light Years Younger" dermatologist and laser-skin specialist David J. Goldberg provides an in-depth discussion of many of the new anti-aging skin care treatments, providing readers the information they need to make informed choices. The changes that are happening in this field such as light-based treatments for reducing photo-aging, new, minimally invasive lasers which may actually prevent wrinkles by stimulating the formation of new collagen, and the recent availability of well-researched anti-wrinkle creams, and more are all covered in detail. Light Years Younger is one of the first books to focus on the numerous new non-invasive, anti-aging techniques that have emerged in the last two decades.
Customer Reviews:
As a esthetician..........2007-05-13
I found this book to be helpful to share with clients who are considering laser services. I felt the book did a disservice to the public by not informing the public that professional skin care services are availabe both within the medical setting and outside of the doctor's office.

Required Reading.......2000-12-19
The author, Walter Middleton, was a good friend of my dad's when I was a kid. At about age 10, full of the idea that war is really grand (common among red-blooded males of that age and beyond, it seems), I started bugging Mr. Middleton with questions like, "What did you do in the War?" About the third time I asked, he set me down for about an hour and told me. What I heard changed me forever.
Many of the things Mr. Middleton told me that day are stories included in this book. I warn you, it is un-PC by standards of the current decade, but the author is to be forgiven if four years of treatment as an animal, by animals, has colored his view of the Japanese as a people. Also, the text is rife with colloquialisms, and there are more than a few grammatical and spelling errors. But the intent was not to write a thesis here. It was to record for succeeding generations the unique perspective of the War, the Japanese captors, and our own officers (including the great MacArthur) from the eyes of our enlisted men, who bore the brunt of the War. In this aim, Mr. Middleton succeeds with five stars. For anyone who has never read an alternative history textbook, I rank "Flashbacks" equal to Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the U.S." and James Loewen's "Lies My Teacher Told Me" in importance.
I have ordered a copy of this book for a friend of mine with whom I have had conversations about how most Americans of my generation have no idea what hard times are really like. (I know I don't, not from first-hand experience such as recorded in this book.) I would have sent my own copy to my friend, except that it is a signed copy, and even more importantly because I will want to pass it down to the next generations in my family. This reading is not pleasant, but it is vitally important. The history embodied in this book must be kept alive. Read it and pass it on.
fives years of faith.......2000-11-03
I just so happen to be the great niece of Mr. Walter T. Middleton. This book was a very heart moving book to read. For a person to go through the treatment that he endured is a miracle. This book is great. He is an outstanding storyteller and this book is a page turner. I would recamend this book to anyone looking for stories during this time perod.
