Book Description

A dramatized memoir of Bob Hamilton's experiences overseas as Navigator of a B-24 crew in the southwest Pacific in WWII. In the skies and on earth, how he lived and loved were adventures typical of that era.

5 out of 5 stars A great read for World War II families.......2002-08-04

Long after new first person books about World War II have been written, Bob Hamilton has written one that will inspire and inform the families of those who served in the Air Force during World War II, especially those who served in the Pacific.

Bob Hamilton was a navigator aboard a B24 bomber, known as the Flying Fortress. His 13th Air Force squadron flew bombing runs against targets throughout the Pacific. And many times the planes didn't come back. The mission was to destroy the Japanese installations and prepare the islands for invasion by the Allies. His ability to take one there as if it were yesterday is incredible. The book is written about real experiences by real people but it reads like a novel. Those who lived through those times will be moved by his details. Those who are younger may know why this generation has been called "The Greatest Generation".

How did Bob Hamilton recall such detail? Through the years he collected personal letters and letters written by his crewmen, logs kept at the time and research done at the Historical Research Agency at Maxwell Air Force base, Montgomery, Alabama where the author copied over 500 pages of relevant records. This material was declassified in 1983.

I would highly recommend this book not only for World War II veterans but for their families who would like to understand what that war was like and what it was like to fly when one navigated by the stars. Bob Hamilton is a gifted writer and this book is a gift to his generation...a generation fast passing from the scene

5 out of 5 stars A Down to Earth view of the Pacific Air War.......2000-09-20

I was to young to serve in WWII, and but I have always enjoyed reading the history of the war. Hamilton's book was extremely interesting, as it presented a first person account of the air war in the Pacific, and at the same time told the experiences of young men forced to grow up too fast and far from home, while being shot at on an almost daily basis. I would highly recommend the book.

    Book Description

Since the first selection of George Santayana's letters was published in 1955, shortly after his death, many more letters have been located. The Works of George Santayana, Volume V, brings together a total of 3,081 letters. The volume is divided chronologically into eight books of roughly comparable length. Book One covers the longest period of time, in effect spanning Santayana's correspondence from the 1880s through most of the first decade of the twentieth century. It illuminates Santayana's life from the age of nineteen until well into his middle years, when he had established his professional career as a full professor at Harvard.

In his introduction, William Holzberger summarizes their significance as follows: "We find in Santayana's letters not only a distillation of his philosophy but also a multitude of new perspectives on the published work. The responses to his correspondents are filled with spontaneous comments on and restatements of his fundamental philosophical ideas and principles. Because Santayana's philosophy was not for him a thing apart, but rather the foundation of his existence, the letters indicate the ways in which his entire life was permeated and directed by that philosophy."

      Book Description

Wounded Boys Heroic Men is a workbook for transformation. Specifically written for and about men. This is the first book to address their issues of physical, sexual, and psychological abuse. Dr. Daniel Sonkin carefully prepares a road map for the recovery process, including insightful stories of real survivors, as well as direction and reassurance.

More important, this unique book provides hope, relief, and comfort for millions of victims too proud to explore their suffering. Carefully analyzing the feelings, attitudes, and behaviors of abused men. Dr. Sonkin teaches methods that break the vicious cycle of violence, make peace with the abuser, and in return find peace within.

Comprehensive and enlightening, Wounded Boys Heroic Men is also a guide to help partners, friends, and family members better understand the struggles these men face, so that they can support the healing journey. Dr. Sonkin's message is simple: With help, healing is possible.

5 out of 5 stars Men healing themselves from within.......2007-02-08

I would recommend this book for men who still have the emotional scares, the resentments, child abuse issues from our childhood holding us back from achieving happiness and serenity. We can become heroes, over come addictions, free ourselves from the bonds of our pain once and for all.

2 out of 5 stars Far from the best of its type.......2006-10-26

Of the growing number of books about male sexual abuse, this one rates just mediocre. The author seems to believe that abused men all grow up to be abusive, especially toward women. He ignores female abusers and the special issues of gay men. I'd recommend one of the better books in this area, especially Gartner's Beyond Betrayal or Betrayed as Boys, but also Lew's Victims No Longer and Hunter's Abused Boys. Also, Moran's The Tricky Part is a great memoir

5 out of 5 stars Clarification to comments by "Ken".......2006-07-28

The section of the book that the reviewer is referring to is a quote from a member of my men's group, and not about myself. However, it is important that readers understand that for many different reasons, people are unable to face the realities of their abuse and as a result may inadvertently put loved ones at risk. This is unfortunately an all-to-common consequence of all forms of child maltreatment. It is not constructive to judge their actions in the past, but to help them change for the present and future. What was important for this particular man, was that he did ultimately face his problems and heal not only his own wounds, but his relationship with his son. He struggled for many years and his hard work ultimately paid off. Today, he has a wonderful relationship with his son and his new grandchildren.

      1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time.......2006-05-15

Dan Jay Sonkin Ph.D should not be trying to guide adult males of childhood abuse. I purchased this book thinking "finally a book written for men that would be a perfect guide to self help". I made it to page 38 when I realized that this Ph.D should not be trying to write anything but his resignation in his trade. Dr. Sonkin betrayed his son by permitting a man who abused him as a child, to become close to his son. On page 38 Dr. Sonkin own admission was that he never told his wife, or anyone else for that matter that he was abused sexually by his uncle. In Dr. Sonkin's stupidity he permitted a sexual predator (his Uncle) to become close to his son, and of course his son was also sexually abused by the same uncle. I am surprised that Dr. Sonkins wife didn't divorce him; and I am amazed that he can look his son in the eyes. Dr. Sonkin didn't have the courage to stand up to his Uncle like a grown adult male, he didn't have the courage to tell his wife what his uncle did to him as a child, and instead he was a coward that cost his son his innocence. Hang it up Doc, how dare you try to guide other men, when you can't even guide yourself.

2 out of 5 stars Touchie Feelie Sham.......2004-06-22

Typical California feel good self-help schlok. Blaming the victim for not getting in touch with his feelings earlier (and of course not paying someone like Sonkin to "help"). Generally muddled pablum.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent (but not best) book on entertaining a la Mexican.......2006-03-08

`too hot tamales' and `Mesa Mexicana' are the two books currently available from the chef / teaching / restauranteur team known as the `too hot tamales' of early Food Network fame, Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger. They recently went up against Bobby Flay on `Iron Chef America'. Not that it really matters, but I don't remember who won or what the secret ingredient was. What is important is that it was easily one of the most entertaining and memorable `Iron Chef America' episodes, comparable to the very first one featuring Chicago Mexican cuisine expert Rick Bayless and the competition featuring Oriental fusion master, Ming Tsai of `Blue Ginger'. What I do remember is the imprint of the iron on the back of Susan Feniger's blouse and the inventive recipe they did for Scotch eggs.

The first impression of both of these books is not inspiring. The layout is ordinary, leaning toward the garish. The photographs are in a grainy black and white and too small to easily make sense of what is happening, not to mention the fact that most are missing captions. In `too hot tamales', it is even difficult to tell which of these two delightful ladies is Mary Sue and which is Susan, from the lack of clear identification on the photographs. The flyleaf of `Mesa Mexicana' clears this up. Mary Sue is the taller with blond hair and Susan is the shorter with dark hair. They also neglect to give a good picture of co-author, Helene Siegel, whose voice seems to be strong in the prefaces and introductions.

Based on the strong `Iron Chef America' appearance, I decided to check out the books from this duo, even though their Food Network show was before my time. I figured two gals with this much energy and a strong showing against the indomitable Bobby must have something to say. At the outset, the book `too hot tamales' did not impress, until I got to the chapters on soups. At this point, the authors' observations seemed to come alive. This was not nearly as strong as what I saw in Deborah Madison's recent book on soups, but the comparison showed that Mary Sue and Susan clearly had something important to say. That is not to say that `too hot tamales' is the better book. `Mesa Mexicana' is actually the better of the two for anyone who is not familiar with Mexican cooking. Having determined that these books have something to say, the next big question is why get these books instead one from the heavy hitters of Mexican cuisine, Rick Bayless or Diana Kennedy.

For starters, both Bayless and Kennedy's best books are more strongly oriented toward teaching Mexican cooking, either by technique or by region. Milliken and Feniger's books are more for fun, without straying too far from strong roots in genuine Mexican cooking technique. If all you want are some good, snappy recipes without being tied to the grill (as you are with many of Bobby Flay's recipes), Milliken and Feniger may be your best choice. They are certainly your best choice if you are attracted to entertaining with a Mexican theme. I had an epiphany of insight when I realized that a rather large number of pages in both books, as well as many pages in many other cookbooks are dedicated to `starters', `finger food', `appetizers', `hors `d'ourves', `antipasto' and what have your. But if you live in a typical family, how much time do you really spend making `party food' in comparison to daily breakfasts, lunches, and suppers. Why don't cookbooks dedicate 20% of their books to breakfast and 35% of their books to brown bag food rather than giving so much room to entertaining food, which the average cook may make once a month, if they are inclined to entertain with food in the first place.

All this means is that these books are much more valuable to you if you do entertain often. This is especially true because both books are very reasonably priced, appropriate to their uninspired art work. It is also true because of the rather odd organization of the recipes. In both books, some chapters are organized by function or meal, some by style of cooking, and some by principle ingredient. This means neither book is especially good if you want to find a book to fit a particular function or to use a particular ingredient. The fact that both books are relatively short confirms that neither book may be very useful if you have room for only a very small cookbook collection. But if you can afford the money and space for a large cookbook collection, you will probably already have one or more volumes from Kennedy and Bayless, so why load yourself up with our spicy gals?

For most people, the answer is simply that they are great fun to read and their recipes get right to the point. If you are a foodie, you don't need another tutorial on technique. If you are a casual cook who entertains, you can go straight to the largely very concise recipes and get on with it. So, both books are easily worth the room they take up on your shelves.

As an aside, it is really interesting to see our gals' comments on the cooking talents of the Mexicans, which is very similar to Tony Bourdain's comments in `A Cook's Tour', where he states that almost all his line chefs at `Les Halle' are Mexican with practically no formal training, yet they are as capable as most French trained cooks.

If you really like cookbooks or you really like Mexican food, I recommend both of these books.

5 out of 5 stars Execellent for both the hobbyist and everyday cook.......2000-12-25

Mary Sue Miliken and Susan Feniger are two of the top chefs in LA. (And maybe the top female duo.) For those of us who grew up equating Mexican food with Tex-Mex, Miliken and Feniger's inventive take on traditional Mexican cuisine is a revelation. Their "Border Grill" in Santa Monica (4th and Broadway) is a noisy, splashy, foodie haven with superb drinks, a decent wine/beer list, and amazing food. For several years they also produced a fun and informational show on the Food network before that cable network went all-Emeril all-the-time. "Cooking with Two Hot Tamales" captures a lot of recipes and tips from the show. Many of the recipes herein one occasionally sees on Border Grill's menu. The house gucamole recipe is almost worth the price of the book on its own!

As a cookbook, Two Hot Tamales is interesting, has an attractive layout, and, by the minimal standards of the genre, is well-written. Unlike their Mesa Mexicana, which I recomend only for the hobbyist chef with access to a decent Mexican grocer and time on his/her hands, Two Hot Tamales can be used on an everyday basis. Few of the recipes involve intensive prep work -- after all, they had to be prepared within the confines of a 30 minute TV show. Equally important for users outside the South-west, few of the recipes require specialized ingredients. Highly recommended.

Loved the size, as this book is portable. I purchased it simply for the pattern on the cover, but there are many patterns inside I intend to use. It's a good choice for those who want to make a variety of scarves for gifts.

          4 out of 5 stars 7.5 OUT OF 10.......2006-09-23

I enjoy intricate crochet work, that's a challenge, takes time and looks like a piece of art at the end. The picture of the scarve on the front is what got my attention. I ordered this book and was a bit disappointed with the patterns inside. Some of the scarves in this book is very plain. I must say the majority could be spiced up a little by substituting the yarn color. There are a couple of very unique scarves in here, and that makes this book worth buying. What bothers me the most is the yarn - I usually buy my yarn at Joann's, Michael's or WalMart. The yarns called for in these patterns are exotic names I've never heard of before, for example "Le Fibre Nobili", "Filatura di Crosa", "Muench Yarns" to name a few. I have never seen these before where I usually buy yarn (maybe I missed it - if I did, I apologize).

This is by far, the most comprehensive and inspiring collection of scarves I have seen thus far (but there is a second collection being published in October 2006, so hopefully that will be just as good)!

The scarves in this little book are so varied and creative, it will give crocheters of all levels some inspiration to try something new.

The problem with many pattern books is that you can often times find similar designs all over the web for cheap or even free (especially with ho-hum scarves) -- not so with this collection, as the patterns are very fresh and unique.

I was delighted to find that my local yarn shop uses this book for their "crochet scarf of the month club," so that should be another indication of the quality and variety. There are scarves in this book for all seasons and crochet abilities. You could easily work your way through this entire book and not get bored.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested -- this is one of the must-haves for any crocheter.

4 out of 5 stars Unique and Beautiful Patterns.......2006-01-21

I found this book on an Amazon list of "must have crochet books" and after making several of the patterns I agree. These patterns are among my very favorite! However, beginners beware, of the 25 patterns 12 are intermediate, 6 experienced, 4 easy/novice, and only 3 are beginner. There are no step by step pictures or stitch close ups. Just a beautiful shot of the finished product for reference. While the book does have a basics chapter, it is brief so more space can be dedicated to the patterns. By the way, the page on yarn substitution I found particularly useful since many of the pattern yarns are expensive. That said, if you have crocheted for a while and want a unique set of patterns, buy this book! The directions are well written and I found them easy to follow. Every time I work on one of these patterns I get numerous compliments and requests for the book title and author. My copy of the book is starting to fall apart! And one more thing, if you are looking for quick projects this book is also not for you. Many of the patterns require a good amount of time to join pieces together or deal with details. However, the results are well worth the time invested.

Book is nice and small, can easily be taken places and worked with. As with any project pattern book, some are good patterns, and some patterns you would most probably never use. People are different, though, and may like the patterns I didn't. I would use about 3/4 of the patterns myself, and I do like the size and convenience.

5 out of 5 stars You only need this one book.......2007-09-14

There are so many pregnancy books out there that it can be overwhelming, and many of them seem dominated by things to worry about or by political agendas on how you should birth/raise your child. I found this one by accident while on vacation, and have found that it gives you all the information you need to understand what's happening to your body and your baby's, distinguish what's normal from what needs medical attention, and feel prepared to bring your baby home. All with no fuss or lectures!

The book is divided into convenient sections, some of which you'll want to devour (nutrition advice, say, or descriptions of fetal development), others of which you'll want to read only as you get to the next set of changes and decisions (such as choices to be made about pain relief during delivery). The range of possibilities are discussed -- e.g., midwives and home birth versus full medical bells and whistles -- and lots of small remedies are suggested for common woes such as backache or nausea. There are also practical tips, like what clothes you'll want to bring to the hospital (for both mother and baby), which help with things you might forget.

All in all, a great book, that I would recommend to any expecting family.

            5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2006-03-23

I'm 13 weeks pregnant as I write this. When I found out I was pregnant, it was a complete surprise and I really didn't know much about pregnancy. After flipping through overwhelming books like "What to Expect When You're Expecting" I decided on this one.

This book had information on everything no matter how little or how much you know about pregnancy or birth. I'm not one to go for picture books, but when it comes to something as life changing as birth, I'll take a book that not only gives me all the info I could ever want, but SHOWS me the information as well. Every page is full color with diagrams and pictures, showing your body and baby as they develop, and various other pregnancy related things.

There's even a section on the first 6 weeks of infancy, so you don't have to say "Oh no! I read all about pregnancy and birth, but what do I do with this squiggly thing I brought home with me?!"

I read this every day and have something different and exciting to talk to my husband about every night. I also know what to look for at the hospital and what to talk to my doctor about at my visits. I also know what to watch out for at home and what I can and cannot do.

I would recommend this book for anyone who is planning to get pregnant, is pregnant, or wants to give the book as a gift.

5 out of 5 stars For expecting moms who want to know what is going on.......2005-09-12

I loved this book! Easy to read - comprehensive answers to almost all your questions you have about pregnancy. I wouldn't rely on this book alone, but it is a great source of information and gives you the idea of what you should discuss with your OB-GYN or what to request in the hospital. After reading most of it, I even decided to skip the birth classes my hospital offers because I felt I knew just enough and was ready to have my baby.

            5 out of 5 stars A pregnancy must have!.......2004-06-14

A teriffic book! I enjoyed how this book was written, organized and presented to the reader. It is truly a must have if you are expecting or expecting to be expecting! I was impressed by the pictures/graphics and the chronicalling of a pregnancy. The information grouped by weeks and trimester easy to read and understand. Many of the questions I had were presented with easy to understand answers. Even my husband enjoyed this book--he read more of this book than any of the other pregnancy references I have brought home. We will definatiely be grabbing this book off the shelf as my pregnancy progresses!

            5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2003-08-10

This was the first book I bought about pregnancy. I bought it on sale even before I found out I was expecting. The book is very well organized and very easy to read. It contains great explanation for every possible question you may have about your pregnancy. It is also very richly illustrated with photos, drawings and charts. I still keep it next to my bed and read it every now and then. I'd definitely recommend this book for my friends when they get pregnant.

Though one in three pregnancies ends in miscarriage, it remains a taboo topic that's subject to misunderstandings and myths. Miscarriage: Your Questions Answered, a book in the Element Guide series, explores the emotional and physical realities of healing from miscarriage in a clear, authoritative, and immanently sensitive manner. Author Ursula Markham, a hypnotherapist and counselor who specializes in working with women recovering from miscarriages, has written a highly compassionate and informative text. Markham explores the different stages of miscarriage and possible causes. She encourages women who have experienced miscarriage and their families to allow themselves to grieve the death of the potential child, and she stresses the importance of memorial services and mementos as part of the healing process. A chapter on complementary therapies (including acupuncture, aromatherapy, hypnosis, and herbal remedies) focuses on holistic healing. Markham's hypnotherapy background serves her well in the chapter on relaxation as a tool for healing and moving forward towards future pregnancy. A resource guide includes organizations in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. --Ericka Lutz

                  Book Description

Fresh out of college and passionate about photography, Deborah Copaken Kogan moved to Paris in 1988 and began knocking on photo agency doors, begging to be given a photojournalism assignment. Within weeks she was on the back of a truck in Afghanistan, the only woman—and the only journalist—in a convoy of mujahideen, the rebel “freedom fighters” at the time. She had traveled there with a handsome but dangerously unpredictable Frenchman, and the interwoven stories of their relationship and the assignment set the pace for Shutterbabe’s six chapters, each covering a different corner of the globe, each linked to a man in Kogan’s life at the time.

From Zimbabwe to Romania, from Russia to Haiti, Kogan takes her readers on a heartbreaking yet surprisingly hilarious journey through a mine-strewn decade, seamlessly blending her personal battles—sexism, battery, life-threatening danger—with the historical ones—wars, revolution, unfathomable suffering—it was her job to record.

5 out of 5 stars A Woman Covers the War Zones.......2007-09-29

This very unusual book is fascinating whether you are interested in pursuing a career in journalism or just curious about what life is like as a woman covering war for a living. This "Shutterbabe" tells the story of her life from behind the camera across different battle zones around the globe. She also tells of the men she meets and gets involved with. There has been some criticism of the book for these tales of sexual escapades, but this is the raw story of a real person's life, and I think that they reflect a complete story, instead of one massaged to make the author look better.

My only disappointment with the story is that she finally gives it all up for motherhood, but that is real life too. Before that, Kogan was a producer for "Dateline" on NBC after her return to the United States. She speaks of tiring of wartime weariness and equates photojournalists to vultures who prey on others' misery--all of which I find disingenuous for someone who made her own living this way for many years. It's ok to change your mind, but I believe that photojournalism is an important way of bringing news to people, and I think Kogan would agree or she would have pursued another way of making a living with her camera in the first place.

Despite these claims, I highly recommend this book to everyone, particularly young women interested in journalism. This book is a real insider's look at covering war, from a woman's point of view, something (unfortunately) we still don't hear that much of, even in the 21st century. Don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars Required Feminist Read.......2007-08-28

Deborah Copaken Kogan writes about her very young career as a rag tag photojournalist who fearlessly jumped at every opportunity and when opportunities weren't available or were pulled away (she was a woman after all) she made them happen for herself. As a young graduate from Harvard, Copaken moves off to Paris alone to become a war photojournalist. The challenges she faces mirror directly or as metaphors, the challenges that every young woman faces who believes she can make a difference in the world. The sexuality of Deborah's chosen relationships in Shutterbabe are understandable and expected for a young adventurous person. The accounts of the men she chooses to, and is forced to deal with interweave perfectly with the many other challenges that Deborah faces in her career. Critics who compare her sexual accounts and relationships to "what if a man wrote this" are way off base. The gender reverse argument is ridiculous. This is a story of a woman fighting the odds and questioning what life has handed her. Trying to make a difference in a world that doesn't belong to her. A man in the same situation would never have to process the same challenges. Men don't get raped and sexually attacked. OK maybe there are exceptions but a story about a man getting raped would not be a metaphor for what other men experience. A man being shut out of an opportunity because he's a man wouldn't mirror what nearly all men must deal with frequently in their lives. Though not religious, Copaken is inspired by her Jewish roots and her knowledge of the Holocast. She questions the existance of God as she plows through her adventures and thoughtfully produces art that will document and communicate the world's struggles. As she reaches her late twenties and after several years in the "trenches" Deborah experiences a metamorphosis. From the young ideal college graduate to the young woman who recognizes true love and emotional support from a partner, Deborah begins to question the effectiveness and authenticity of her career. She wrestles with the importance of childrearing. She moves to a safer career yet still struggles with the same questions. On one assignment Deborah meets her old male colleagues and finds herself defending her choices to these men with fetus envy(men who try to belittle women who raise children). Shutterbabe is my hero--a woman who makes a difference while young and again as a devoted parent of two children. I look forward to learning of Deborah Copaken Kogan's next phase. I recommend this book to all young people--men and women, to gain a richer understanding of the places we hold in this world and how we all might take a step forward from here. Be inspired by this young woman's incredible bravery and the conviction of her thoughtful choices.

4 out of 5 stars Honest and brutal and a woman wrote it!.......2006-11-20

Finally, a book where the author is honest about her adventures in both the work and sexual arenas. Reading some of the previous reviews it seems that because the author had what some would consider a privileged upbringing and went to Harvard she should have gone to join the peace corps or become a doctor and kept her mouth shut about her sexual exploits. Thank God she didn't. What Shutterbabe is writing about is real life...come on we all know women or perhaps are women who carry on affairs with married or soon to be married men. We all know certain men have affairs who don't like women...or rather don't respect women. Just because Shutterbabe went to Harvard does not mean that she automtically is excluded from the "my life sucks" group that we have all been a member of...so she takes a picture of a dead poacher and every one is up in arms about it, it was her job to do so if anyone should be judged shouldn't it be the editor who sent her there to get that particular picture or else...if it had been a guy who shot the picture I can guarantee you there would have been a truckful of women just waiting to soothe his fevered brow! Thanks Shutterbabe for your honesty about your life...although I cringed at several of the passages you wrote I applaud you and your story.

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading for Photojournalists.......2005-08-23

Great Read! I bought this book because Bill Jay from Lenswork magazine recommended it. It's a book you can't put down! I absolutely loved it. My only negative comment would be the title--it sounds so barbie-like and "fu-fu" whereas the book is meat-n-potatoes photography. This IS the required book for any woman who wants to be a photojournalist.

In a world of high tech achievements, Buson's haiku is beyond refreshing because it is more efficient. Call it quick seeing deep..It opens the mind with a deep dimensional structure of space and time.. True poetry..simple and free connecting all points

beautiful translations and, as usual for Ueda, the most insightful commentary.
