Book Description

This is the first biography of the "Defender of Vicksburg," General John C. Pemberton. A Philadelphia native, Pemberton resigned from the United States Army in 1861 to fight on the side of the South, influenced by his Virginia-born wife and by his years of service in the Southern states before the Civil War. He was made a Lieutenant General in the Confederate Army and assigned to defend Vicksburg and the Mississippi River.

Written by Pemberton's grandson and based on research in official records and family papers, this book brings to light long-neglected facts revealing the tragedy of errors that led to Vicksburg's fall. It is, in the words of historian Douglas Southall Freeman, "the fairest, as well as the fullest study of the tragedy from the viewpoint of the principal Confederate actor."

3 out of 5 stars Worthwhile........2003-10-25

This is the story of an interesting, duty bound person caught in a true no win situation. The first nail in his coffin is his simple, straight forward, selfless devotion to duty. The second nail was in not having any awareness of Jefferson Davis' complete duplicity. The third nail is his surrendering an entire Confederate Army while concurrently losing one of the South's most strategic strongholds. His fourth nail, to complete the box, was his forced disobedience of Joe Johnston's order to evacuate Vicksburg.

In short, Joe Johnston, the theater commander was right, President Davis, the Army Commander, was wrong and the Union born Pemberton, who obeyed Davis' explicit orders, became the fall guy.

Pemberton's Northern birth was just too good an excuse to blame the loss of Vicksburg on and Jefferson Davis, despite his explicit orders to the contrary, truly does let Pemberton take the fall for the loss of Vicksburg, coming as it die on the same day as the Confederate loss at Gettysburg. These two concurrent catastrophes sealed the Confederates doom by eliminating European recognition. Realizing British or French intervention was lost; Jefferson Davis needed someone to finger: Who better than a loyal, foreign born subordinate.

Vicksburg was not the Confederacy's or Jefferson Davis' finest hour. But it just might have been John C. Pemberton's. When he met Grant under that now famous oak tree, he had to know he was a discard, that his devotion to duty and to his superiors had caused his ruin and that his reputation could never be salvaged.

This astonishing biography of Alfred Kinsey, the man who launched the sexual revolution, is graphically frank about his decidedly out-of-the-mainstream sexual practices (including masochism and voyeurism), yet historian James Jones doesn't exploit the material for titillation. Instead, Jones argues compassionately and persuasively that Kinsey's personal sexual demons sparked his campaign to demolish Victorian taboos about sex by gathering the scientific data eventually published in Sexual Behavior in the Human Male (1948) and Sexual Behavior in the Human Female (1953). Jones reveals that the data were hardly as unbiased as Kinsey claimed, but it was world-shaking nonetheless. Alfred C. Kinsey: A Public/Private Life is a magnificent work of cultural history as well as a sensitive study of a troubled individual.

          Book Description

The hidden life of Alfred C. Kinsey, the principal architect of the sexual revolution. In this brilliant, groundbreaking biography, twenty years in the making, James H. Jones presents a moving and even shocking portrait of the man who pierced the veil of reticence surrounding human sexuality. Jones shows that the public image Alfred Kinsey cultivated of disinterested biologist was in fact a carefully crafted public persona. By any measure he was an extraordinary man--and a man with secrets. Drawing upon never before disclosed facts about Kinsey's childhood, Jones traces the roots of Kinsey's scholarly interest in human sexuality to his tortured upbringing. Between the sexual tensions of the culture and Kinsey's devoutly religious family, Jones depicts Kinsey emerging from childhood with psychological trauma but determined to rescue humanity from the emotional and sexual repression he had suffered. New facts about his marriage, family life, and relationships with students and colleagues enrich this portrait of the complicated, troubled man who transformed the state of public discourse on human sexuality.

          2 out of 5 stars Mean Book.......2004-05-14

Jones certainly did his homework, but the work comes across as mean, even vindictive. He shows Kinsey is the harshest light and he comes across as excessively judgmental. A more recent book, Sex - the Measure of All Things by Jonathan Gathorne Hardy is a kindler and more balanced look at Kinsey and his work. I recommend starting with that. Kinsey was a great pioneer -- not perfect -- but a true giant in opening up to the doors to our sexuality. The Christian right has spent the last thirty years trying to discredit Kinsey's work and take us back to the 19th Century.

2 out of 5 stars Great Story, Terrible Book.......1999-10-24

"Awkward" and "provincial" wrote the NY Times reviewer, and I can't disagree. To get an idea of the biographer's perspective on Kinsey, consider that he refers to an interest in S/M as "peculiar," and closes by predicting that had the atheistic Kinsey lived to see the age of AIDS, he would have seen AIDS as the work of a "wrathful God."

2 out of 5 stars Thorough, biassed and both scientifically and sexually naive.......1999-05-20

James Jones's biography of Alfred c Kinsey is a valuable antidote to the hagiographies and demonologies published so far. Jones presents the nastier sides of his subject's personality and exposes his strategically concealed sexual practices. However, Jones presents Kinsey as a pervert and charlatan, failing to understand the moral and scientific rationales for Kinsey's approach to sex research and thus totally misrepresents both the man and his achievement. Jones's last-page sop to Kinsey's greatness seems to be a cowardly after-thought to a bilious, splenetic and angry book.

          2 out of 5 stars A better choice.......1998-09-17

I would recomend reading Judith Reismman's new book: Kinsey: Crimes and Consequences.

The Kinsey Institute revealed that Kinsey used pedophiles to document orgasms in hundreds of boys and girls as young a 5 months old. One of his favorites reported abusing at least 800 children. These

Kinsey reclassified prostitutes as married woman when he could not find enough woman willing to submit to his questionnaire. He used child molesters, rapists, homosexuals, prostitutes, sadists, masochists, etc. to represent the average American.

Kinsey would not allow anyone, even a janitor to work for him unless they submitted to a sexual history questionnaire. When applicants did not agree that adultery, pre-marital sex, and sex with animals was normal, he told them they would not fit in with his staff.

The Rockafeller Foundation's records reveal that Kinsey's associates were unqualified. Not only were the histories unscientifically administered but the statistics were proven unreliable and inacurate.

If you want to know the full truth of the Kinsey deception -- buy Reisman's well documented book.

5 out of 5 stars highly readable biography of a complex individual.......1998-04-11

i had not known too much about kinsey until i read this book . . . now i know perhaps even more than i watnted to know (the book is nearly 1,000 pages). . . however, it was never dull . . . and would be of interest to readers interested in books about higher education, the mdeia, public rleations, statistics, politics, and yes, sex also! . . . i recommend the book!

We knew it all along, but now here's proof--women are different! Healthy Women, Healthy Lives is the first book to be based on the now-famous 30-year study of thousands of nurses. Researchers from Harvard Medical School have assembled a straightforward medical guide focusing on the major preventable diseases that women are susceptible to, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and osteoporosis. The advice here is not particularly earthshattering. Eating grains and vegetables will make us healthier, as will exercising, maintaining a healthy weight, and not smoking. It's the level of practical detail in each chapter on disease that stands out; after reading this, you'll have a full understanding of how to balance your behaviors and unpreventable risks to achieve optimum health. Best of all, every detail is woman-specific, from healthy weights to average age of first heart attack.

After providing ways for reading statistical charts and background on the study, the book is divided into two parts. The first 10 chapters are devoted to individual diseases, your possible risks, and ways to reduce those risks. Each chapter ends with a no-nonsense article written by a doctor, based on the study, that summarizes the advice that doctor gives to his or her own patients. The last chapters offer advice on changing behaviors. Here, you'll find suggestions on improving activity levels and diet modification, as well as the risks and benefits of aspirin, alcohol, and vitamins.

If you're tired of the daily news reports with their conflicting evidence and suggestions, treat yourself to a book that delivers practical information, useful statistics, and advice that actually makes sense. --Jill Lightner

          5 out of 5 stars Well recommended.......2002-02-09

The Landmark Nurse Health Study was enormously interesting and full of useful information,as well as being clearly and understandably written for the layperson. The authors enlisted the help of 170,000 nurses to track their health status over the past 25 years, by filling out questionnaires every few years, occasionally requesting blood samples and even nail clippings from some. This is a report on their work, which also cites many other studies, some that agree and others that disagree with the authors findings. They emphasize that this is the latest word, but not the last.
The researchers discuss at length those situations in which certain medications that are advantageous for one disorder may be disadvantageous for another. Choosing which way to go will require consideration of hereditary factors and family history, as well as consultation with ones primary care provider.
Asking nurses to do this kind of information gathering was well conceived, as we all know that nurses are meticulous record keepers, as well as being altruistic and concerned with the welfare of their fellow human beings.
I find myself quoting frequently from this book, as well as recommending it to all my women friends and relatives. I enjoyed reading it and benefited from the information it contained.

          2 out of 5 stars reader beware!.......2001-08-14

This book is touted as showing how to prevent disease through changing your lifestyle, right? Well, keep in mind that the authors never tried changing their subjects' lifestyles! So we really have no way of knowing whether if the nurses they studied had changed their diets, they would have been healthier or not. In medical science, the only way to really find these things out is to actually do a clinical trial...randomly assign people to different groups to follow a certain program and then see what program is best. These authors didn't do that so their results are just observational. You might see in your neighborhood that three women who like to wear lavender clothes all came down with cancer...does that prove that if you stop wearing lavender clothes you won't get cancer? These authors have never shown that they can prevent disease through their recommendations. The authors never treated these women as patients, in fact they never even saw them! Also keep in mind that all these results are just based on the subject's reports of what they ate, how much they weighed etc. The authors never verified that the answers were truthful. And they never measured the women's blood pressure or cholesterol levels or any other ordinary lab tests that your doctor does on a routine visit. So this book is really just a bunch of advice that sounds plausible but might or might not have any effect on preventing disease. Don't believe the hype!

5 out of 5 stars Everyone Should Read This Book!.......2001-07-15

This book deserves more than five stars. It is by far the best resource on women's health issues that I have seen.

Review Summary: How can women improve their health by changing their lifestyle, diet, and activities? That's the question that this book answers. Based on the longest running and most authoritative sources of information, you should prefer the information here to what you will read in other resources. The book deals with factors like age, race, exercise, diet, use of supplements, weight, birth control pill and hormone replacement usage, smoking, and drinking in order to define how these affect the incidence of disease. In addition, the book also tells women how to improve their chances for avoiding diseases where where behavior counts for a lot.

Review: The detailed focus of this book is remarkable. Unlike most books about health that look at men and women together, this one drills down to many different perpectives on women. For instance, if you took oral contraceptives in the 1970s, what is the effect on your risk of breast cancer today? If you take supplementary calcium now, how does that affect your risk of having a bone fracture when you are past 70? These are the kind of specific, and important questions that this book looks at. And the data are not necessarily what you think. Calcium supplements, for instance, don't seem to help with reducing fractures. If you discontinued oral contraceptives some time ago, the impact on breast cancer incidence seems to drop off to nil.

The data for the book come from several long-term studies. The most significant is Harvard Medical School's Nurses' Health Study, which began in 1976. The base was 120,000 R.N.s aged 30-55. The original focus of this work was on oral contraceptives, but many other data were assembled in two page questionnaires sent every other year. Since then, biological samples have been added liked toenail clippings and blood. In 1989 116,000 more nurses were added in the Nurses' Health Study II, which tracks younger women than those in the earlier group who are now increasingly elderly. Nurses were originally chosen because it was thought they would be more accurate in their data and more likely to be open about sharing information about contraceptive and reproductive practices. Since then the National Institutes of Health have also started a tracking study focusing on the use of postmenopausal hormones, low fat diets, and the impact of calcium and other supplements on postmenopausal health. All three studies are used extensively in this book.

The book's first section looks at the studies and how to interpret the data that come from them. The second section (and the longest) looks at a different diseases. Instead of lumping cancer together, for instance, you get separate looks at breast, lung, colon, endometrial, ovarian, and skin cancer. Other dieases covered include heart disease, stroke, diabetes, osteoporosis, asthma, arthritis, eye ailments, and Alzheimer's. The final section is on advice about how to do better with physical activity, weight control, smoking, nutrients, foods, alcohol, vitamins and minerals, postmenopausal hormones, birth control, and aspirin.

Unlike many books coming from physicians, this book is easy to understand and apply. You get a lot of scientific data, but you also get lots of instances of plain English. For example, there are quotes from nurses and how one doctor provides advice in each section for what she or he tells patients about that subject. Also, each chapter has a simple, useful summary that you can use to put everything in perspective.

If the book has a weakness, it's that you cannot learn as much as you need to know about how to change difficult behaviors like smoking and eating foods that lead to excess weight in brief chapters. So, once you've decided you want to improve your behavior, I suggest that you also seek out other books that are more specialized on those issues.

Obviously, this book will be of interest and value to women. Why should men read it? I told my wife about how good I thought this book was, and she asked me how she should change her behavior based on the book's information. I was able to summarize for her in less than five minutes what I had observed that she could beneficially change. So this book can be valuable for men to read, if they share the information with women they know. Also, men can give this book to women as a token of their love and caring.

After you finish this book, I suggest that you also think about where you can get such authoritative information about other important subjects in your life . . . like getting along well with others, enjoying good mental health, feeling happy and optimistic, and giving and receiving love. Why not make improvements in all these dimensions?

Remember: You deserve the best that you can provide for yourself!

5 out of 5 stars Great dining, simplified.......2004-10-28

There used to be a TV commercial of a mom whipping together a yummy treat. It took her about two seconds, but to impress her family with her hard work, she would dust herself with flour and otherwise tousle herself. With this book, you could do that.

Leslie Revsin had an absolute gift for reducing recipes to a few well-chosen ingredients and easy-to-understand instructions. Her book allows you to dine well at home without exhausting your energy or your budget: just the thing for entertaining. There's a nice variety of recipes and she helpfully offers suggestions and alternatives.

I am not a novice cook, but in order to prepare for making a new recipe, I usually find that it is best for me to read the recipe at least half a dozen times to make sure I catch all the steps and have a clear idea of sequence. The beauty of this book (and Revsin's others) is that the recipes are so clearly written and, in essence, so easy that I read once and commence cooking. It's a beautifully written tutorial for cooking simply and dining well.

5 out of 5 stars This has quickly become my favorite cookbook!.......2004-01-26

My wife and I have recently retired, and in our "new life", cooking at home has become a very important part of our time together. (We were accustomed to eating out at least 4 times a week!). Leslie Revsin's new cookbook has added an incredibly exciting dimension to our "dining in" experience. The recipes are simple, easy to follow...but deliver a rich, complex pay-off. We especially enjoy the way the book is laid out. A brief description at the top of each recipe, ingredients on the left margin, and every step in the preparation and cooking process clearly numbered in the middle. Our only regret is that we never had the privilege of dining at Restaurant Leslie, and we can only hope that our preparation of Leslie's double breast of chicken with two mustards (unbelievable!)comes close to her famous original. We've made 15 recipes already, and every one a winner!

5 out of 5 stars Menus with variations for simple but memorable entertaining.......2004-01-15

I like Leslie Revsin's books (see also "Great Fish, Quick")but they do not seem to be very easy to find. But I was worried about this one because I usually do not like menu cookbooks - they are fun to read but it can be so hard to find a recipe afterwards. This one is organized into chapters on menus and then separate chapters with the recipes organized by course (dessert, etc.) The menus each have a simple (just right!) version and several "for a bigger feast" ideas.
Her approach is low key and she wants to help you have fun at your own dinners. She's very reassuring and the food is robust, not finicky. In addition to all this, she intersperses a stories of her restaurant days which makes it fun for armchair cooks too.

4 out of 5 stars Important Resource for my Church Family.......2007-05-07

I am a candidate for the ministry and many of the women in the congregation have wondered how to make vestments (especially stoles). This book provides a great background for reasons for certain vestment. I got this book as a gift for my church family.

            5 out of 5 stars A unique DYI.......2005-06-04

Many churches have difficulty in finding good, useful vestments at a decent cost. Many churches also have a ready supply of creative people who would love the opportunity to turn their hands to providing good, useful vestments. This book is geared toward them.

'To encourage the art of vestment making, this book covers the history, unique qualities, and spirituality associated with these liturgical garmants and altar cloths, as well as elements of design.' Vestments are not without meaning, and not simply fancy and pretty things to use to make the service look more special. Vestments do have a kind of mystique about them, but in fact they can be fairly simple to make in many respects. This particular book assums a novice-to-intermediate skill level at sewing and garment/covering construction. It is not usually in the putting-together of the vestments that the hard part lies, but rather in the design and adornment.

This book is a good not only for those who make vestments, but also for those who wear and use vestments - how they are made is important, and this book goes into detail from the inside out of cassocks, albs, chasubles, hoods, maniples, and more. The second chapter goes into some detail about what each of the major pieces is, and how it is used physically and symbolically in the services.

Chapter three looks at design principles, to create unity and harmony with grace and beauty. There needs to be variety without being busy, rhythm without being oppressive. Principal colours are dictated by liturgical seasons, but from that point forward there can be great flexibility. This book discusses many colour elements and considerations, such as combinations of colours and symbolic meanings beyond the liturgical calendar, both traditional and contemporary.

There are patterns for sets of vestments for several seasons - Lent, Advent, Christmas, Easter, Pentecost; there are also pieces for special times (3 Advent and 4 Lent, which use Rose (or pink) sets). These tend to include chasuble, stole, maniple, burse and veil, as well as a few other pieces for selected seasons.

The book itself does not have sewing patterns such as one might get at a sewing/cloth shop, but does have design and measurement instructions for one to make one's own patterns; each chapter begins by listing materials required, and there is a chapter on general notions/supplies that one can expect to use.

This can be a good gift for the tailor or seamstress 'want-to-be' in the congregation, or for anyone interested in coming up with inexpensive vestment sets, thoroughly invested with the love and labour of the community in which they are used.

              Book Description

Techniques in Home Winemaking is an easy-to-use, clearly-illustrated book that caters to novices and advanced winemakers alike. It allows home winemakers to make informed decisions on how to make the best wines from concentrates, juices, or grapes using equipment according to their needs and means.

The chapters are laid out in a logical sequence, from crushing to bottling, in the same order as the handy flowcharts that are provided in the early pages of the book.

In the new edition of Techniques in Home Winemaking, author Daniel Pambianchi has completely updated all aspects of the book and has added an additional 30 pages. Expanded sections describe the instruments and procedures for monitoring and controlling acid, pH and sulphite levels; introduces new recently-available winemaking equipment; provides step-by-step instructions for making world-class sparkling wines; discusses winemaking problems; and includes numerous new pictures and diagrams.

3 out of 5 stars Not a bad book, but there are better........2004-02-23

Of the "Home Winemaking for beginners" books out there, this one is somewhere in the middle for me. The descriptions of basic procedures are all solid, and there are lots of explanations on how to use winery equipment, but there are some problems. First of all, the author's approach is very much that of an engineer: the view that quality wine is a product of what the winemaker does. This is explicitly stated in several places. The book contains almost no discussion of how to obtain high quality grapes, for example, which everyone must agree is the overarching determinant of quality in any wine. Even though the "engineer" approach can be useful at times, the book has very little to offer in terms of explaining how winemaking options affect the final product (length of maceration, rack-and-return, fermentation temperature, etc.). Buy Jon Iverson's or even Jeff Cox's book instead, and be sure to get a good book on wine and winemaking as well (Hugh Johnson etc.).

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent Info.......2003-05-08

This book is a great start for a fledgling vintner and appears to have enough detail to be useful even after becoming competent. It doesn't assume you know anything about winemaking, giving detailed descriptions of the various processes and explaining the purpose and importance of each of the steps. Source information for supplies is also very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Techniques in Home Winemaking - happy customer :).......2001-08-14

Excellent book, at least for a beginner, which I am. Certainly very useful for experienced winemakers due to lots of advanced topics. Was a clear winner after comparing it with other books on the same subject. Very clear and to the point, well organized. I definetly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars A competent guide to making premium grape wines at home.......2001-06-11

This is a very good book. The rather lofty objectives inferred by its title and stated in its "Preface" are more than adequately met. Indeed, the book is geared toward achieving good wine from average grapes through proven methods of balancing aroma, body, clarity, color, taste, and style. In all, it succeeds in achieving these goals.

The book is laid out in a logical order that progresses from the general and introductory to the specific and detailed. Among the introductory topics are a discussion of wine styles, grapes, juices, concentrates, and an analysis of wine itself. The author then discusses winemaking equipment and the additives and chemicals used to control musts and shape the character of the wines produced by controlling sugar, alcohol, acidity, pH, and sulfur dioxide. He discusses the preparation of the grapes for processing, the maceration process, pressing, alcoholic fermentation, malolactic fermentation, and stabilization. Not only does he explain the processes themselves, but he offers sound advice and skillful techniques even old hands will appreciate. He then devotes a well-written chapter to clarification methods and products, from simple racking schedules to a variety of fining products and filtration systems. He then moves into and through the all-important and oft-overlooked subject of blending varieties and vintages to achieve more complex and interesting wines. His chapter on oak barrels is perhaps the best I have read. Not only does he thoroughly discuss the preparation and maintenance of oak, but also traditional and modern methods of fermenting and aging wines in oak, including spoilage problems, how to treat them, and more importantly how to prevent them. Alternative oaking methods are also discussed. Finally, he concludes the basics of winemaking by discussing bottling, closures and cellaring.

Had Pambianchi stopped there, his book would have surpassed most in useful content. Instead, he spends three chapters discussing the ins and outs of making sparkling wines, ports and icewines. From must preparation to specific techniques of alcoholic fermentation for each, he explains the fundamentals with clarity and thoroughness. For sparkling wines, the bottle fermentation, disgorgement, dosage, and bottling are the final steps that lead to success or failure. Portwine making is not simply fortifying a sweet still wine, and icewine making is not simply prematurely stopping the fermentation in a late harvested, highly-acid, very sweet, grape must. Pambianchi clarifies these differences and defines the essence of each. Here, his book excells.

He then goes back to the basics and discusses vinification and winemaking problems anyone could encounter and how to treat them. This is a wonderful chapter for anyone who ever encounters one of these, for Pambianchi discusses the 14 most common problems and their resolutions better than do most authors of similar books. When combined with his coverage of the problems associated with oak barrel aging, this book's value is potentially enormous.

Lastly, the book contains a number of very valuable appendices. But the whole of the book is peppered with detailed and useful charts, tables and illustrative figures. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Wine Making Review.......2000-09-18

The charts and illustrations in this book are worth the price in explaining the process of making wine. The book includes the wine making process for fresh grapes, concentrates, or kits, this book is a valued reference. Many topics are covered, from pressing to bottling. Details of fining and malolactic fermentation are also explained.

                                Book Description

The first American anthology to contain stories from a diverse range of people with Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS), Stricken: Voices from the Hidden Epidemic of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome offers an intimate look at the political and social issues surrounding CFIDS, told by those who are living through this ordeal. This fascinating collection gives readers an inside perspective on this highly misunderstood epidemic.

Addressing several issues, such as why some doctors still do not believe CFIDS is real, how the disease is mocked in the media, myths about the illness, and the personal fight for medical or public recognition, this invaluable book reveals both the skepticism and hope that is felt by the growing number of CFIDS sufferers.

With contributions from Pulitzer-prize nominated writer Susan Griffin, renowned health writer and radio host Gary Null, well-known feminist activist Joan Nestle, and award-winning poet and essayist Floyd Skloot, Stricken is an eloquent testament to the heroism, defiance, and diversity of the CFIDS community.

"Fact-filled, heartwrenching, and sometimes hopeful. . . .A powerful eye-opener. . . .The single best book I've read that honestly and fully describes the CFIDS experience." - Joan S. Livingston, Massachusetts CFIDS Association

"A raw look at the personal stories of pain, isolation, and ultimately, heroism of the millions worldwide who suffer from this complex illness." - Vicki Carpman Walker, The CFIDS Association of America

"Munson educates the reader with her own informational narrative and through the personal accounts of persons with severe chronic fatigue syndrome. Provides a vehicle for the voices of patients in isolation - their struggles, despair, fears, and simple joys." - Katrina Berne, PhD, Clinical psychologist and author of Running on Empty: The Complete Guide to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

                                5 out of 5 stars A MUST-READ FOR ALL WHO SUFFER .......2007-09-03

I have been living with ME/CFIDS for a little over 4 years now, and when I was dx'd, I must have purchased atleast 30-40 books on the subject, because it was immediately clear to me that I was NOT going to learn from my drs! This book is SO ENLIGHTENING to all of us who suffer through our daily lives trying to "do the best that we can", which on most days for me, is to be able to stay out of bed for atleast 6 hrs/day. It showed me through reading everyone else's personal experiences that I AM NOT ALONE IN THIS BATTLE!!!! I have spent a very long time feeling like I am the only one who suffers so severely, but there were actually several others like me in this book..ie: who are mostly bed-ridden, who are on complete disability, who have to rely on someone else just about 24/7 to manage to get through a day, etc.
This book, I feel would also be WONDERFUL for the family's, spouses', and friends of those of us who have this disease, because it is written by OTHER SUFFERERS---NOT DOCTORS OR SPECIALISTS!!!
It is also a very very easy to read book. You can skip through it anywhere that you would like. It definitely does not have to be read front to back. There are soooo many personal storys in this book that whomever you may be, if you suffer with ME/CFIDS, you will DEFINITELY find someone in this book who is telling your story!! It's extremely comforting to read from others who are just like me!!
Out of all the books that I own on this God-aweful disease, I would rate this one in the top 5!!
I hope that this will help anyone who is "wondering" if this book is worth purchasing out of hundreds that are out there on the subject. THIS ONE IS DEFINITELY WORTH IT!!

                                5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2007-02-14

This book was so powerful for me to read that i had to put it down several times and cry my eyes out. I currently live with fibromyalgia, and while i realize that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and fibromyalgia are not the same illness, the experiences of the contributors mirrored my own very closely. Reading this book propelled me to a new awareness about the social and political climate for people living with chronic illness, and thrust me into a new level of commitment to fight with everything i have for our rights and dignity.

5 out of 5 stars For those with CFS to know they are not alone.......2006-05-24

It is beyond nice to know that I do not suffer alone. These are accounts of people who have or still have CFS or Fibromyalgia. Some stories tore at my heart. Particularily one story whose author wishes to someday ride her bicycle again, the same goal as mine. Other stories filled me with hope or new thoughts to look upon this grayness that is CFS.

Even if you don't have CFS, buy this. Trails of the mind and body are universal in many aspects. And if you have a loved one who has chronic fatigue, buy two. One for yourself so you can at least have a better understanding (and of course one for your loved one).

With these stories, I do not suffer alone. I open this book on hard days. It's hard to go to college and have CFS.

I open this book on good days, because it fills me with a certain kind of comfort that I can't get elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars A variety of ideas and stories.......2005-10-14

This collectin of essays all pertain to fibromyalgia, but each is different. There is personal stories mixed with medical information. It is a must for someone struggling with this illnes. It gave me the courage to tell those who love to say" You don't look sick!" that I don't care what they think. I am not going to pretend to feel well when I don't.

3 out of 5 stars there does seem to be a treatment/cure.......2005-06-09

according to the newest research (by dr. a martin lerner) cfs has been shown to be a persistent viral infection of the heart by the ebv virus or a coinfection of ebv/hcmv viruses. yhe treatment is merely an antiviral drug, valtex or ganciclovir respectively. this treatment has brought me back from the depths of the disease and i am extremely grateful. my sympathy to all who have suffered.
