Customer Reviews:
A complex, forgotten hero.......2004-04-19
Along with Captain Albert Jacka and Lieutenant General Sir John Monash, Brigadier Harold `Pompey' Elliott was a household name in Australia in the 1920s for his role in the Great War. Yet today he is largely forgotten. Russ McMullin's thoroughly researched biography of Elliott goes someway to addressing this by providing us with a fascinating insight into the life, times and legacies of one of Australia's most famous fighting general.
Elliott was born into relative poverty in rural Victoria. His father struck it rich on the gold fields of Western Australia in the early 1890s enabling a bright and promising Harold to gain a private education and a place at the University of Melbourne to study law. A keen militia member, Elliott put his studies on hold to enlist as a Private in the Boer War where he received the Distinguised Conduct Medal and a field commission. Upon his return to Australia he completed his studies and continued as a militia officer. In 1914 he was given command of the 7th Battalion of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) which he led at the ANZAC landings and throughout the Gallipoli Campaign. Promoted to Brigadier in early 1916 he took charge of the 15th Infantry Brigade which he commanded until the end of the war. Elliott was a hard task master, but was loved and admired like no other Brigade Commander in France, never asking his men to go anywhere he was not prepared to go himself. Despite playing a pivotal role in key allied successes of 1918, his outspokenness and stubbornness won him few friends in the British and Australian higher Headquarters and he was overlooked for a divisional command . A slight that embittered him to the end of his life, despite his promotion in the 1920s to Major General.
Despite a promising post-war career as a Federal Senator and as a champion of the cause of veterans following the war, the massive burden of his wartime experiences led to Elliott's gradual mental decline and to his eventual suicide in 1931. A fascinating insight into a fascinating man and the turbulent times in which he lived.

For modern readers--especially those in the sciences who revere him as the father of the inductive method--Francis Bacon (1561-1626) is the model of an English Renaissance man whose towering intellectual achievements somewhat paradoxically set him floating above mundane historical particulars. British academics Lisa Jardine and Alan Stewart fling Bacon back into the hurly-burly of Elizabethan and Jacobean politics, where he unquestionably belongs. Indeed, their magnificently detailed rendering of Bacon's bumpy progression to the pinnacle of royal office-holding, as James I's lord chancellor (he was forced to "retire" in 1621 after a bribery scandal), makes his scientific and philosophical contributions even more remarkable. How on earth did he find time to write The Advancement of Learning (1605) and Novum Organum (1620) at all? In the authors' deliciously dense re-creation, notable for their shrewd evaluations of often misleading written source material, Bacon seems almost exclusively preoccupied with intriguing for promotion, struggling to pay debts incurred by his lavish lifestyle, and currying favor with both Elizabeth's and James's male favorites. (The latter tactic leading to contemporary charges of "sodomy" that the authors do not necessarily dismiss.) Some may regret that this warts-and-all portrait does not spend more time on Bacon's books, but Jardine and Stewart brilliantly succeed in their stated goal of providing "a rich context for those works." Seldom has a scholarly tome so palpably conveyed the gritty, sweaty, faction-ridden reality of being a working politician at the turn of the 17th century. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
The statesman, scientist, and philosopher Francis Bacon (1561-1626) lived a divided life. Was he a noble scholar, or a conniving political crook? Was he a homosexual? Lisa Jardine and Alan Stewart draw upon previously untapped sources to create a controversial, nuanced portrait of the quintessential "Renaissance man," one whose achievements, while enormous, were nonetheless sadly circumscribed by his class and station.
Customer Reviews:
All about the life, little about the man.......2005-10-04
This book is in many ways superb. The writing is smooth, the judgments intelligently based on evidence, the archival research prodigious. But it leaves one with oddly little sense of Bacon the man. Partly that's because the authors don't speculate, confining themselves to the historical record. That's a great virtue, but it also means we never get a sense of Bacon's relations with his wife, or even his sexuality. We hear about his chronically poor health, but not what his symptoms suggest to a modern doctor. Also, the authors don't examine Bacon's writings in any sort of detail. This is definitely a "life and times", not a "life and letters."
The authors rarely step back to give an overall picture. There are no scene-setting panoramas, no authorial intrusions to explain why, for example, they decided to go into such detail about the activities of Bacon's brother Anthony. One gathers that the authors believe Anthony and Francis were working closely together, but I would have liked to have their thinking explained more fully. (Although Anthony is practically the main character of the first quarter of the book, his death is mentioned only in passing.)
These criticisms reflect my occasional irritation with the book, but they don't detract from the authors' tremendous achievement. If the authors had included everything I missed, the book would have been quite a bit fatter, and that would have been a negative, too. As it is, the book is (just barely) small enough to be read without risk of injury, unlike so many other modern biographies.
The book contains a great deal about Bacon's political activities, as another reviewer has noted. That's because a great deal of Bacon's life was occupied with political activities. If all you want to read about is Bacon's scientific works, you shouldn't read a biography of their author. In the case of Isaac Newton, there is practically no difference between the life and the scientific work. But in Bacon's case, there is not only a difference but a dichotomy. He was a successful lawyer and politician who also happened to kick-start the Scientific Revolution.
To summarize, Hostage to Fortune provides all the details, but not the outline. My advice would be to familiarize yourself with the basic course of Bacon's life and his achievements before reading this book, so you can fully appreciate its richness.
Mixed Feelings.......2004-02-08
A powerhouse of academic scholarship, this book is the most tedious and boring biography I have ever read. Too many pages on Bacon's political career, too little on his scientific achievements.
Bacon for sceptics........2001-08-19
While the book starts slowly with what seems to be an overly detailed account of Bacon's family and their activities, it is a clear headed and balanced account of a man who achieved fame across the centuries, as well as in his own time---but never great virtue, character or happiness in his own life. It is quite readable, and even engrossing in the second half. Scholars will appreciate the careful documentation and extensive reference to sources and supporting materials.

Terrific.......1998-07-08
Alfred Dodd has written perhaps the finest book on Francis Bacon while solving the mystery of Shakespeare's identity with rare combination of historical truth and placing it inside the narrative of a story. Dodd's penetrating insights and research leave most other Bacon biographers way behind. Partly due to the fact that Dodd himself was a Master Free- Mason the general public will have a unique glimpse and understanding of the ways of Freemasonry and it's influence throughout Bacon's life and how it saturates the Shakespeare Sonnets and Plays. The novice student to the more advanced researcher will profit greatly in absorbing the facts surrounding Bacon's mysterious birth , his relation to Queen Elizabeth, his passion and guidance to advance England thru education, sparking the English Renaissance and formulating a greater vocabulary for the English language, encouraging the New World settlements, overcoming numerous enemies like his cousin Cecil, and Coke the crooked lawyer, it's all revealed in this wonderful book. By the time one finishes reading it you will have not only a greater awareness of one of the world's greatest genuises and his selfless service to humanity and it's future but a deeper wisdom into the Shakespeare authorship issue. . Alfred Dodd has left us a great treasure chest for all to partake in.

Book Description
WHY NOW? WHY ME?
Today, millions of women in their twenties and thirties, many of whom are just beginning to plan a family, are receiving the shocking news that their reproductive years are already over. They are in premature menopause -- menopause years before its time. Whether due to an autoimmune disorder, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or the often undiagnosed condition known as Premature Ovarian Failure (POF), premature menopause is common, increasing -- and almost always traumatic.
If you are one of the women experiencing early menopause, you have hundreds of questions, but have probably found few answers...until now. The Premature Menopause Book is the first book focusing on this difficult transition -- written by a woman who faced the same questions: What can I do about it? Do I need hormones? How can I have a baby despite this condition? How can I feel like "me" again?
The Premature Menopause Book provides the latest information on health and emotional issues, explores all of your options, lists resources, websites and support groups, shares the experiences and advice of women going through this experience, answers frequently asked questions and offers the support and understanding you need.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful book.......2007-06-19
The condition was not as described (the cover was torn), but the content was excellent and very informative.
Finally, a book that explains everything!!!.......2005-09-08
This book is fantastic! I wish I had found it 6 months ago. I have gotten so many of my questions answered about early menopause since reading this book. I am now a truly informed patient.
Thank You, Kathy Petras!.......2003-05-24
I was so relieved to find this book I am 33 and have been in chemotherapy induced menopause since I was 25! I was never able to find any information about menopause for someone my age until now. After reading this book and discussing the issues with my physician, she was more than willing to make changes to my hormone replacement therapy, but she had never mentioned there were any other options besides premarin and provera before. If I hadn't read this book, I would have never known what to ask! Thanks again, Kathy! You are a blessing!
Emotional Lifesaver.......2001-08-03
I am 34 and was diagnosed with Premature Medipause two weeks before I finally found this book. That was two weeks of Hell! I was depressed, confused and an emotional mess. I cried all the time. I thought I was going insane. Then I got this book. It truely explains not just the medical and physical traits of this condition, it also goes into the feeling of unexplainable loss. I felt like someone truely understood how I felt. The short statements from many other women with this rare condition were so helpful for me. These feeling are so hard to explain to family or friend. Thank you so much for writing this book.
READ THIS BOOK FIRST BEFORE THE OTHERS!!.......2001-02-01
"The Premature Menopause Book: When The Change Comes Too Early", should be the FIRST book you read if given the diagnosis of POF (or premature menopause). After my diagnosis of POF, I read any and all material I could find on menopause. All they did was confuse me! These other books were written for women in their late 40's to late 50's. I am 36! "The Premature Menopause Book: When The Change Comes To Early", is wonderful. It answers alot of questions and gives you support! I read this book before I went to my doctor to talk about HRT (hormone replacement therapy). I'm glad I did. I was better able to understand what my doctor was talking about, and I feel, make better decisions about HRT than if I had not read this book.
I can't say enough about it. BUY IT!

Book Description
This user-friendly reference is divided into two sections. The first section, "Signs of Diseases and Health Problems A–Z" lists symptoms alphabetically. To find the appropriate information, the reader doesn't need to name the medical condition or system, only to describe the symptom. This first section is cross-referenced with the second part, "Treatment of Diseases and Health Problems A–Z," in which symptoms are associated with invaluable veterinary advice–causes, diagnoses, and appropriate treatment. Additional information on canine anatomy, first aid and advice on when to seek professional veterinary care is included.

Family Reading for New Dog Owners.......2002-12-13
We were contemplating dog adoption. We filled out papers, purchased food and dog items. Once we were at the counter, we learned that the dog had some form of skin irritation and it had to go to the VET before we could adopt. WOW! This made us think we really needed to learn more about dog illnesses. We got the book! The reference that refers to female dogs (Bxtch) had to be explained to our young son's. Therefore, the book doesn't seem to be for everyone. Although, it is very informative.
A-Z of Nothing?.......2001-08-07
This book was written in the U.K. and I found the writing is slanted toward information not pertaining as much to breeds in the U.S. The book was filled with grammatical and typographical errors, and it is out-of-date for anyone ordering in the year 2000 or later. The A-Z descriptions were trite, and I was unable to find many things I was looking for, such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease and other current diagnoses. Sadly, this book was of no help to me.
A dog heath manual essential for owners.......2000-09-06
We just adopted a 2 year old black lab named Abbott. My husband has always grown up with dogs, but, not me. I have had cats, and this was all new to me!
So, it was time to get precise information, and this book is essential for dog owners. The books deals with signs and symptoms, diagnosis, causes of disease, and treatments. The handy format is easy to use and is concise. All types of breeds are discussed, which I found very interesting. The disease pathology is professional and informative enough to satisfy consultation.
A must for new and old time dog owners!
excellent book........1999-11-27
If you are a dog owner, this is a must. It is clearly written and very easy to read.
A wealth of information.......1999-08-14
Even if you are a long time dog owner, this book will educate you on some complex health problems of our canine friends. Would recommend for all canine owners.

Knowledgeable.......2004-02-20
This is Mary Preus' second book about herbs. The first, "Growing Herbs", covered the basics but was limited in scope. This book expands on the first, guiding the reader deeper into the world of herbs as well as describing 50 of the best-known herbs in detail. While the book is focussed on growing herbs in the Pacific Northwest, it would be a useful book for herb lovers anywhere.
The writer was for 20 years owner of the Silver Bay Herb Farm in Washington State. In the first 80 pages of the book she shares her extensive knowledge of herb growing basics and of using herbs for cooking, healing and crafts. She includes plenty of recipes that are both imaginative and practical. In this section also she explains how to plan and build different types of herb gardens, and how to harvest and preserve herbs.
Most of the book, however, is a detailed look at 50 species of herbs. The writer includes information about planting, propagation, pets and diseases, harvesting and uses for cooking, healing and crafts. I particularly liked the information about the chemical elements found in each species and their value in balanced healing and a healthy diet.
This is a thoughtfully written book from a knowledgeable and experienced herb gardener. The book ends with a calendar of seasonal tasks in the herb garden, a list of the herb gardens open in the region, sources for plants and seeds, and publications and societies of interest to herb gardeners.

Stay calm, confront major problems, and LISTEN.......2002-08-01
One would think a teenager would appreciate this book since the author puts the onus of responsibility for communication square on the shoulders of the parents. As he should! He stresses self-understanding, determining communication goals, building a positive perspective, choosing words carefully and the "art of caring communication."
One truly important thing that he points out is "ambivalence on the part of the parent is likely to be interpreted as license by the teenager." He suggests that rigidity is definitely not the alternative, but a clear committment to a system of values. Example is far more effective than preaching. "Do what you say. Teens are quick to spot hypocrisy."
This book is a last minute fix for parents who haven't been working on communication with their children and, frankly, I don't know if it would work or not. Crucial to teen trust and communication is consistent interest from early childhood -- parents who not only instruct but LISTEN from the time the child begins to talk. It takes years and it takes effort...lots of effort.
If you have a teenager and you don't know how to say "no," you're in trouble. Swets does, however, describe techniques to establish that authority. He also calls for improving your listening skills and gives feedback techniques to use when you disagree. You'll find graphs and charts for getting to know your teen -- and yourself -- better.
There's lots of helpful information here but the time to begin to talk to your teenager is long before adolescence!
Helpful book with good advice.......2001-05-08
This book is simply written, but has many thoughtful and somewhat creative ideas on how to stay calm in difficult situations. I think that reading this book might just help parents and guardians who are frustrated and need a little guidance and encouragement. Not all of us came from Ozzie and Harriet households, and learning a few coping skills and hearing some concrete examples on HOW to listen can only help!
I recommend this book to parents and others who are feeling a little stressed and a little unheard by their teenage family members.
talking? Who wants to talk?.......1999-11-21
I'm a teenager who, by parental force, has read this book. Now, I must admit, some of the things are true... but... there are other books that I have read that sum it up much better. Frist of all, what adolescent wants to talk? I know that as soon as my mother or father says "Why don't we sit down and talk for a while?" I am instantaniousely up in my room with the music turned up. Don't talk to your teens unless you need to, they know how to get around it... trust me.

Enjoyable.......2002-08-27
This story kept me turning pages.
My chief criticism is that the romance took a backseat to the plot: who is Elizabeth, and who fathered her baby? This has been a tragedy for Elizabeth, and will cause more pain in the family circle, and it tends to take over the story. However, it an is interesting enough question to keep you involved, and Mr. Wood, the hero, plays an important role.
Sheila Bishop does know how to keep her readers engaged and in suspense. She also knows how to write intelligent characters. Diana and Mr. Wood are likeable (Diana perhaps a little more so than Mr. Wood, who is a little hard on his own son), and the secondary characters are mostly people you can imagine yourself knowing.
As in many of her books, adultery and its consequences play a role. One problem was that I felt one character's understandable anger was given short shrift (it seemed included primarily to give Diana a reason to feel superior), and some conflicts were resolved too quickly. Other than that, a fairly satisfactory afternoon's escape.
An English Georgian Romance (similar to a Regency).......1999-01-01
Diana Pentland, a young widow, has an unwed girl's baby left with her. A mysterious benefactor provides funds to bring up the child provided certain conditions are met. Rather a fun tale and quite one of my favourites.
