Book Description
The Range. Think of it as a shooting gallery that circles the globe. A vital link was forged in 1966, when NASA converted a World War II tanker into the USNS Vanguard, one of the most sophisticated communication centers ever to sail the high seas.
Range Rats At Sea is an account of one crewmember's attempt to squeeze a lifetime of adventure into two short years. Success, however, hinged upon his ability to win the heart of a shipmate.

Book Description
From the #1 bestselling author of The T-factor Diet...a special audio program that could save your life!
The opportunity of a lifetime.
Everyone knows the grim statistics on smoking. So what's your excuse for not quitting? If you are like millions of Americans, the prospect or fear of gaining weight after quitting may be the major factor. If so, this audio can help you change your life.
Quitting smoking is the single most important step you can take for the sake of your health, but going on a diet to control your weight after you have quit is one of the worst things you can do! Research shows that dieting can increase both your craving for cigarettes and the addictive properties of nicotine -- while not addressing the metabolic changes that can cause post-smoking weight gain.
In this deluxe audio adaptation of How To Quit Smoking Without Gaining Weight, Martin Katahn presents a safe, simple program based on the latest scientific research in metabolism, biochemistry, and smoking cessation. You'll learn how to tailor this valuable information to your situation on cassette one; then, on cassette two, you'll learn techniques for deep muscle relaxation that you can turn to again and again for help keeping away from cigarettes and keeping off the extra pounds.
No matter how often you have tried and failed, this special program is an invaluable tool to help you quit smoking once and for all.
Customer Reviews:
So-so.......2007-07-11
There are better quit smoking references out there. I don't think the author should have started out with how hard it is to quit smoking. I had more cravings while reading those chapters than during my first week quit.
I give 2 stars only because it is accurate in the fact of the body fat/carb chemistry changing.
This book works if you're a need-to-know type.......1999-11-02
This book prepared me for what to expect -- what stages my cravings would go through and why, and for how long. It let me know why I might or might not gain weight and what I needed to do to counteract that. The book provided the tools for understanding the physical repercussions of quitting. I guess forewarned is forearmed.
A standard, formulaic diet book.......1999-01-12
This book doesn't quite live up to its title. The skimpy info on the special problems smokers run into with regard to weight management (which most people already know if they've read anything about it in newspapers or in the smoking-related Newsgroups) is heavily padded out with pages and pages of standard fat-content charts and blank charts to fill out as part of the author's "7+7" weight program. This gimmicky program essentially states: Eat less fat and exercise.
The information on smoking cessation programs is also very dated; Zyban/Wellbutrin are not mentioned, and the nicotine patch seems to have been almost an experimental technique when this book was written. This little book seems like it was cranked out as a quick money-maker--a standard, formulaic diet book with a few cliched statements about smoking thrown in.

Customer Reviews:
Kudos to Bette Hagman!.......2007-05-22
Thanks to Bette Hagman's clearly written, informative cookbooks, it is very easy to enjoy a gluten/wheat free lifestyle. This book is not only power packed with excellent recipes, but with tips on maintaining a gluten free lifestyle.
It makes me think of the spiritual, "Free At Last." A modified version for the Hagman books could be "Wheat free at last, wheat free at last..."
Thank you, Bette Hagman!
Non-gluten delectabilities!.......2007-05-17
After going gluten free a year ago, I thought I'd never bake anything good again. But this book and its predecessor, The Gluten-free Gourmet, changed my mind! Because I'm also sugar free, baking is an extra large challenge. But these recipes along with xylitol sweetener have gotten me back in business. What a great find! Thanks, Bette!
Too fancy, not our favorite of the series.......2007-05-10
We were looking for more basic recipes. Shrimp never graces our table and we just had different needs than this book meets. But my low rating may be way off for your eating habits.
We much prefer the otehr books in the series.
Bette's Tapioca bread is a staple at our house.
Happy Days are here again..........2001-08-09
Thank you, Thank you Bette Hagman for taking your disease and making such a wonderful contribution to the rest of the world. I have a husband and now a nephew that both need the gluten free programs, except when I first started with my husband most doctors did not have a clue what we were dealing with. I even went to a dietician at the hospital and she walked away with 3 pages of information, and I had nothing,I just paid the office fee. I made up a lot of things on my own but until I found Bette; I could never seem to find a way to put bread back into his diet. Now he eats everything just like the rest of the world. We are so fortunate that now this disease is more well known and how it is affecting at least 1 out of 250 people, makes Bette Hagman more important than ever. I have all of her books and they go with me everywhere. What a blessing, it has made life so much more for those that are suffering.
For a celiac this book is a salvation........1999-11-01
If a celiac wants to avoid the ghastly annoyance of gluten hidden in foods of which you cannot find out what's in it, this book is a bible for us.

Customer Reviews:
Above average material........2004-07-09
Manual offers consistant information, more consistent than other manuals published on this subject. Devoid of redundancy, unlike Mordecai Siegal's below par hardback, which was an unecessary sale and publish. The payment price for others are economical, but not in a specific way. Cairns may actually have purchased this pet in order to write, publish, and order this superior guide to sale. There are numbers of manuals released on this Retriever, which creates a serious dilemma. Purchase useless material, or the most useful and economical manual sold in modern day. Not recommended are shorter guides which are not seen abundantly in stores. 60 page or more manuals are likely to be helpful in domestic maintainence purposes. This manual is included on this list.
Wonderful handbook for the Golden owner.......2001-08-31
This book is well written with tons on helful information. I especially liked the section on first aid and health care. It's well edited and has lots of wonderful pictures of this magnificent breed.
Retriever.......2000-02-15
This book does work for all golden Retreivers.Check if your dog has a black mouth and black nose if he does. He is a very smart dog.Put an egg in his mouth. If he has a black mouth and nose he will carry around the egg without cracking it or breaking it.
Customer Reviews:
Especially non technical........2004-07-08
No technical, helpful details. Owner lacks this pet and does not seem to have much experience with animals in general. The facts are basically known and cheaply categorized. Book may be one of the most unpopular manuals published and sold around stores. In my opinion, this did not need to be published in any case. Least though, the topic is a particular dog breed, which is fine.
The manual is hardback, but does not deserve to be refurbished as much as other, more deserving manuals. Opinions differ in every respect, however this guide should not be bought by ones who presume it is a technical, fact containing guide. M. Siegal should have deciphered between publishing sub par material or making another attempt.
Outstanding!!!!!!!!!!.......2001-09-26
This book is VERY good. It's one of the best book about golden retriever that I've ever read. This book covers almost everything you need to know about golden retriever. It also has a lot of nice picture. I really recommend this book for those who like golden retriever and wants to own a golden retriever.
A Great information book about Golden Retriever.......2000-09-25
This is one of the best Golden Retriever book I've ever read! This book contain almost all information you need to know about Golden Retriever such as the standard for Golden, training, feeding, bonding, and more. I recommend this book for those who love Golden Retriever.
A Handy, Easy to Read Reference Book.......1999-08-12
I am in the process of selecting a Golden Retriever puppy. I recently owned a Cocker Spaniel for over 11 years, and before that, a mixed breed for 6 years, so I know a little about dogs. I was searching for a hard-cover book priced between $10 and $20, that would give me the basic information I needed to make a wise decision on choosing a Golden Retriever puppy, as well as general information about owning a Golden Retriever. I read the reviews for this book, and it appears one either liked the book very much or disliked it very much. There was no "middle of the road." I will agree that there was some redundancy in what the author wrote, but he kept repeating (reinforcing) in my opinion, all the positive traits about this breed that I was hoping to read. So, I didn't look at this repetition in a negative way. The book contains all the basic information a novice to the breed needs to be able to choose a puppy, and enjoy and care for in every way, his or her Golden Retriever for the long term. There is also a fairly generous amount of color pictures featuring several Goldens in various stages of development and in various poses. The pictures also showed the variety of golden colors--from light gold to dark gold. Since I am not qualified nor interested in breeding or showing the dog, I really didn't mind that the book did not go into great detail about the pedigrees and how to show a dog. For those who are looking for this kind of detailed information, I am sure there are more in-depth (and expensive) books featuring extensive coverage of these subjects and others, but as I stated in my "one liner" review, this book is a great value for the price, and a great benefit for most of us who just want a Golden Retriever as a companion dog. I highly recommend it to anyone who never owned a dog, or to someone who is switching to Goldens after owning a different breed. After reading the book, I am excited, enthusiastic, and feel this book has helped me to better prepare to welcome a Golden Retriever into my home.
The Golden Years is any thing but Golden!.......1999-08-03
Mordecai Siegal Certinly does not own a golden! He says the same things again and again. Also he just writes things every dog owner already knows such as how to teach your dog to walk on a leash. You just snap the leash on and take the dog out for goodness sake!
Book Description
The Golden Retriever has won its way into America's heart as a wonderful companion, friend and all-purpose hunting dog.

Very British, very peculiar, and poorly printed too........1999-10-05
Although this edition is specifically for the US and Canada, it could have used much more extensive editing from the original English version. "Born gannets"? (p.10) "Part of the hearthrug"? "Local canine rapists"??? (p.18) The book is typeset in a small, difficult-to-read typeface, though the quality of the photography is decent. For a short book on Golden Retriever basics, Sucher is far better. Personally, I found the heavy trimming of the photographed dogs peculiar, and the common snow-white coloring alarming, but perhaps that's the state of Golden Retrievers in the UK.

Book Description
Slightly over a century ago, the tallgrass prairie in North America stretched over most of what is now Iowa, Illinois, southern Minnesota, northern Missouri, and the eastern edges of the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Today, only a few scattered patches--less than one percent--remain of the endless, flat, silent land that greeted the pioneers and finally fell to their plows. Konza, an area of over 8,600 acres in the Flint Hills in Kansas, is the largest remaining undisturbed tract of tallgrass prairie in the nation.
Konza Prairie is the extraordinary and often lyrical story of this tallgrass ecosystem. Biologist O.J. Reichman, a compelling writer, vividly portrays this often poorly understood environment as a living laboratory where organisms--from monarch butterflies to the striking big bluestem grass itself--interact with the physical world of the prairie.
In separate chapters, Reichman provides an absorbing natural-history introduction to such topics as the tallgrass ecosystem; the dynamic geological processes which created the seemingly placid prairie; and the many inhabitants of the prairie, from plants and insects to birds, reptiles, and mammals. Interspersed with this central text are informative sections (set off by italics) about the processes taking place, among them Evolution, the role of photosynthesis; fire; patterns of weather; and competition among organisms. Finally, Reichman describes what is being done to preserve the prairie and provides an extensive listing of the common and scientific names of organisms mentioned in the text.
Beautifully written and illustrated with color photographs, line drawings, and maps, Konza Prairie is an excellent introduction to a little-known ecosystem--and is superb national history.

Customer Reviews:
A must read!.......2007-03-02
I read this book with my first child and I would highly recommend it to anyone! It is valuable information, especially for a first pregnancy! I was armed with enough information to make informative decisions and have the natural birth that I wanted!
fear, uncertainty and doubt .......2005-05-16
The cultural view of 'childbirth as a near death experience' in the U.S. is very real, so I thought I'd comment:
How to read a book: with a mind open to learn. with research abilities. with a desire to explore further when something presented swirls up strong FEELINGS within, the stronger the feelings -> the more is required of self to face an honest effort to discover truth.
Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt: culturally, we have slaughtered the truth that pregnancy is a normal state and childbirth is a normal function of the mature female body. The best kept childbirth secret is that normalacy IS safest for mother and baby, as well as most satisfying....and that for the majority of mothers it really isn't difficult "to have it normal". Yes, there ARE deviances from normal, as well as actual complications, that may place a different spin on the nature of the experience of childbirth, and which may cause normalacy in childbirth to be more difficult or impossible to achieve safetly or with desire. How often does that occur ? Depends on who you ask ! There really is a difference between being delivered (and the support is for the medicalized experience) and giving birth (and the support is for keeping mother comfortable and confident).
Normalacy in childbirth is attainable, is protective and provides A Best Birth, A Safest Birth. To step forth with a bit of free-mind effort in the pursuit of discovery of why this is so~ there are questions such as: What IS normal ? Why is it protective ? What causes some women enjoyment of childbirth without drugs or surgery, while some scream asap (before labor !) for elective paraplegia (aka: epidural) or elective surgery (aka: just take it out) ? Why does the World Health Organization urge the U.S. to return to a midwife-based system of maternity care ?
A Good Birth, A Safe Birth, as well as Obstetric Myths VS. Research Realities and The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth (to name a couple) will provide assistance in gaining a meaningful education on the subject of birthing normally.
Biased and Outdated Work by Unqualified Authors.......2003-06-13
The title requires some translation: by "a safe birth," the authors mean "safe from the interference of doctors and nurses," and by "the childbirth experience you want," they mean childbirth with a minimum of interference from doctors or nurses, which they claim is the way most women want it. If you already know that's what you want, this book may seem a bracing pep talk on how to talk back to the medical establishment. However, if you're either unsure how you feel or, worse, if you actually think you'd like some medicinal pain relief during what's widely agreed to be the most painful experience in most women's lives, this book is not for you. I'm not sure how they selected the women they surveyed on birth preferences, but considering that they quoted only about 1 woman who actually wanted drugs rather than having them forced upon her by evil doctors, I have my doubts about their selection methods. In my own experience, I have yet to come upon a woman who got the sort of athletic satisfaction out of the unmitigated pain of labor that seems so common among their interviewees. Most of the women I know seem to think pain hurts, and it'd be nice to have less of it.
The authors claim that interventions by doctors (all sorts of pain medications, inducing labor, episiotomy, and especially caesarean sections) only make childbirth more dangerous for both mother and baby. This seems highly dubious to me, because far more women and babies died during childbirth before these techniques were invented. They back up all their conclusions by citing scientific studies, but neither of them is a scientist, a doctor, a nurse, a public health specialist, an epidemiologist, or a midwife, so I doubt they really have the qualification to do the kind of scientific analysis of birth technologies that they claim to be doing, and I strongly suspect them of cherry-picking studies that support their ideological convictions and ignoring evidence to the contrary.
In addition, a book written in 1992 about childbirth choices is likely to be completely outdated for women giving birth in the age of Damaged Care, I mean Managed Care. To give you a hint of the problem, while the authors mention HMOs, they feel the need to define the term. The health care world has changed, and many of the options they describe may not be options any more.
Great resource.......2003-06-01
I'm pregnant with my first child, and this book did a very thorough job of explaining what to expect in the hospital, why they do the interventions they do, why these interventions might not necessarily lead to the most positive birth experience, etc. I feel more prepared now for what that might come my way during labor, thanks to this book. Anyone who claims that this book is 'unbiased', however, is sadly mistaken! The overwhelming tone of the book is 'hospitals and doctors are evil and must be destroyed'. I agree that the medical establishment intervenes too much in a natural process, but the bashing gets to be a bit much. Also, I found that much of the book's assertions are based on studies from the 1960's and 1970's...I'd like to see something a little more current. A lot can change in 30-40 years!! I still recommend the book, but I wouldn't make it the ONLY childbirth book that you pick up.
Put this on top of your list.......2003-04-24
There are so many (too many) how-to books for pregnant moms to read, and each seems to have a bias, a slant, a message to sell. This is the book you need. I was a midwife in Berkeley for 15 years, and I always included A Good Birth, A Safe Birth on my recommended reading lists for clients. It doesn't preach. It gives straight, evidence-based information. Most of all, it helps women to know what questions to ask - and how to ask them so they'll be assured of straight answers.
Valuable information for everyone associated with childbearing, from moms to doulas to nurses to midwives - and darn, I sure wish a few obstetricians would climb out from behind their desks and read it, too!
Buy it, and buy another one for a pregnant friend.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful, rich, and insightful.......2000-11-13
In this collection of essays, John Elder, a professor at Middlebury College in Vermont, explores his observations from a sabbatical in Kyoto, Japan. He discusses everything from Japanese calligraphy to haiku to Zen to whalemeat, and even for the uninitiated, he makes these aspects of Japanese culture accessible. His observations carry some real depth, too: he looks well beyond a tourist's superficial awe, well beyond an academic's obsession with paradigm. In these essays Elder discovers what it is about bonsai trees, for example, that makes them uniquely Japanese, and he is able to articulate what their prevalence says about Japan's relationship to nature. Without idealizing Japan, he leaves the reader with a greatly deepened understanding of a distinctly eastern view toward the natural world, and perhaps provides us--both Japanese and American--with new ways of seeing our human relationship to the environment. This is an ambitious book, and a highly successful one. I recommend it enthusiastically!
