Book Description
Leonhard Euler was one of the most prolific mathematicians that have ever lived. This book examines the huge scope of mathematical areas explored and developed by Euler, which includes number theory, combinatorics, geometry, complex variables and many more. The information known to Euler over 300 years ago is discussed, and many of his advances are reconstructed. Readers will be left in no doubt about the brilliance and pervasive influence of Euler’s work.
Customer Reviews:
A great book.......2006-10-12
Don't be fooled by the brevity or put off by the high price of this book - it's worth its weight in gold. If you have a university level math degree and you want to do proofs again, this book is for you. I have been able to understand everything in the book as a result of Prof. Dunham's amazing ability to explain things. I did have to resort to the Internet on occasion to brush up on some trigonometry and calculus. I have been reading it slowly for 2 years now and I'm only half way through - sometimes I pull it out when I need some brain exercise. If you like math, you will like this book.
Charming but historically inaccurate........2006-01-26
Once again, the Ivy League establishment has got it all wrong. They continue to perpetrate error in the historical record just as they do in the scientific record with that preposterous theory of evolution.
First of all, Euler should not be credited with topology. Descartes had formulated, before Euler was born, the key topological equation F + V - E = 2.
The Greeks attached mystical significance to the five platonic solids. So much so, Euclid included the five regular solids in book 13 of his Elements as if it were the culimination of his work, as if the three-dimensionality were a culimination of the two-dimensionality of the earlier books.
These "regular" solids are three-dimensional objects: namely, the Tetrahedron, the cube, the octahedron, the dodecahedron and the icosahedron. They are "regular" because, on each, the faces are congruent. Furthermore, the face angles are equal. For example, a cube's faces are all the same size.
If we count the faces on the tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron and icosahedron respectively, we get 4, 6, 8, 12, 20 respectively.
If we count the vertices of each respectively, we get 4, 8, 6, 20, 12.
If we count the edges respectivley, we get 6, 12, 12, 30, 30.
Now, create an array of the faces, vertices and edges:
F:4 6 8 12 20
V:4 8 6 20 12
E:6 12 12 30 30
Descartes noticed that F + V - E = 2. For example, 4 + 4 - 6 = 2. Or take the second column: 6 + 8 - 12 = 2. Descartes conjectured (as we all would) that this formula represents an invariant amongst all polyhedra.
Descartes died in 1650 A.D. when he was poisoned by some jealous Swede. Euler was born in 1707 A.D., some time after Descartes's death. Liebnitz had translated this work of Descartes which shows F + V - E = 2. And Euler is known to have read all of these Liebnitz manuscripts at the Hanover archives.
Why scholars persist in giving Euler credit for this equation boggles my imaginatino unless their reading is limited. If it is limited, then appellation of scholar for such men is unwarranted.
Pictures of the five platonic regular solids can be seen in Daud Sutton's little book "Platonic and Archimedian Solids."
Nice book for readers with a background in math.......2003-04-25
I really enjoyed reading this book that describes some background on Euler and his work. It is written in an informal style, so for people with a math background it reads like a novel.
The book is not suitable for people who want to learn more about the person Euler, but do not have a math background, because 75% of the book is about real math (equations). So if you don't enjoy reading equations, do not buy the book.
Summary: as enjoyable as the other Dunham books, although a bit more expensive (but still worth the money).
William Dunham has done it again!.......2002-03-25
With the publication of this, his third book, Dunham has once more shown himself to be a master himself of mathematical explanation. Unlike his previous two books, The Mathematical Universe and Journey Through Genius, which covered results by a variety of mathematicians, this book focuses on selected results that sprang from the remarkable mind of Leonard Euler, one of the most prolific and important mathematicians of all time. What sets Euler apart is not only the vast quantity of his output (the publication of his collected works, the Opera Omnia, spans six dozen volumes, or over 25,000 pages in all!), but also the breadth and originality of his work. Not only did Euler contribute to a wide array of mathematical fields -- from number theory to complex analysis to geometry -- but in many cases, he was the founder of those fields. For example, Euler invented the field of analytical number theory, and he was the first mathematician to recognize the importance of and to discover the important properties of complex numbers.
This book in many ways resembles Dunham's Journey Through Genius. As in that book, Dunham has selected 15 or so theorems to present in detail, and he makes an effort to keep the proofs similar in spirit to the original proofs. Although the proofs are complete and the book is full of equations, they are accessible to anyone with a high school level of mathematics education. But in addition to the proofs, Dunham also provides historical context, as well as commentary on how later mathematicians used and improved upon Euler's work. For example, we learn that Euler began to loose the sight in his right eye at the age of 32, and that despite his virtual blindness by the age of 65, he continued his prolific rate of output until his death at age 84.
The book's title is taken from a quote by Laplace, who said, ``Read Euler, read Euler. He is the master of us all.'' Indeed, if you have any interest in mathematics, you will almost certainly find yourself in complete agreement with Laplace's sentiments by the time you finish reading this wonderful book. ...
" Euler, the anlysis incarnate "!!!!.......2001-09-15
" Analysis incarnate " , no other more suitable words probably can describe the incomparable power of Euler, as his contemparies called him. Concerning the usual style of Dunham to write this stimulating book, other readers have made many comments and I think there is no need to repeat that. What I want is that Dunham to write another book, perhaps volume 2,3 etc and also write a thorough biography of Euler, one the greatest mathematicians in the history. ( To me, for mathematical ability, his should be at the same rank with Newton, Archaemedes, and Gauss, even Einstein concerning the mathematical and theroetical aspect, is below par compared with Euler )

It seems like it was just yesterday that Prozac was a miracle pill, a medication that could not only make sick people well, but "better than well."
By the end of the 1990s, Prozac and similar drugs--Paxil, Zoloft, and others--were being prescribed for everything from depression to anxiety to drug addiction to ADD. About 70 percent of prescriptions for these antidepressants were being written by family physicians, rather than psychiatrists.
Dr. Joseph Glenmullen, a psychiatrist who has a private practice and also works for Harvard University Health Services, sees this antidepressant mania as dangerous, even reckless. He notes that these drugs can have severe side effects, including uncontrollable facial and body tics, which could be signs of severe and permanent brain damage. About 50 percent of patients suffer often-debilitating withdrawal symptoms from them, and about 60 percent end up with sexual dysfunction. And Prozac may make a small number of people homicidal or suicidal, or both.
But there are alternatives: in Germany, for example, St. John's wort outsells Prozac 25 to 1, showing that doctors and patients there understand that the herbal remedy works as well as the synthetic ones for mild to moderate depression. [Editor's note: St. John's wort has been shown to interfere with the actions of the transplant rejection drug cyclosporin and the AIDS drug indinivir.] And diet, exercise, 12-step programs, and good old-fashioned psychotherapy can work well, too. Even for severe depression requiring medication, Dr. Glenmullen shows how the drugs can be used with other treatments and then discontinued after a year or less.
Moreover, Prozac Backlash discusses exactly what depression is and isn't; Dr. Glenmullen reviews hundreds of scientific studies, and discusses numerous case studies from his practice and others. Because of that detail, medical professionals may be this book's most likely readers, but anyone who has been on an antidepressant, or is close to someone who is, will also want to give Prozac Backlash a careful read. The brain you save could be your own. --Lou Schuler
Book Description
Roughly 28 million Americans -- one in every ten -- have taken Prozac, Zoloft, or Paxil or a similar antidepressant, yet very few patients are aware of the dangers of these drugs, nor are they aware that better, safer alternatives exist. Now Harvard Medical School's Dr. Joseph Glenmullen documents the ominous long-term side effects associated with these and other serotonin-boosting medications. These side effects include neurological disorders, such as disfiguring facial and whole-body tics that can indicate brain damage; sexual dysfunction in up to 60 percent of users; debilitating withdrawal symptoms, including visual hallucinations, electric shock-like sensations in the brain, dizziness, nausea, and anxiety; and a decrease of antidepressant effectiveness in about 35 percent of long-term users. In addition, Dr. Glenmullen's research and riveting case studies shed shocking new light on the direct link between these drugs and suicide and violence.
Written by a doctor with impeccable credentials, Prozac Backlash is filled with compelling, sometimes heartrending stories and is thoroughly documented with extensive scientific sources. It is both provocative and hopeful, a sound, reliable guide to the safe treatment of depression and other psychiatric problems.

Be Informed!.......2007-01-25
I urge anyone who is taking an SSRI antidepressant (or considering it) to read this book. All the way through. Prozac and it's SSRI cousins are recklessly handed out to us as if they were candy on Halloween. I'll wager your physician will not tell you of the side effects and dangers of these so called miracle pills. Remember that physicians are financially rewarded to get you and other patients in and out of their office as quickly as possible. It is lucrative to prescribe these drugs rather than inform you of supplements as well as dietary and lifestyle changes that work just as well as Prozac!
Dr. Glenmullen is a courageous and incredibly well informed doctor. He presents anecdotal, firsthand and scientific evidence that antidepressants are not the Godsend we are led to believe they are. In fact they can be dangerous and downright debilitating. Even though this book was written in 2000, Dr. Glenmullen tells us of the increased risk of suicide in adults who take SSRIs. Now, in 2006, the FDA are finally acknowledging this! A black box warning is now placed on these drugs.
Please do not mindlessly take antidepressants without being informed of the very possible consequences. Read this book first!
Don't Be Fooled. Read This Book........2006-07-09
As a person who has been on antidepressants for over 8 years and developed severe neurological conditions while on them, I can't recommend this book highly enough. It was suggested to me by one of my doctors after constant testing could find no physical cause for my neurological problems. There were no lesions, no tumors, no spinal anomolies yet there I was with severe myoclonus among other things.
First of all, it was explained to me at the outset that depression like mine was cyclic. I should be able to get off the medication after a year and a half and not expect the depression to come back for some time afterwards whereupon I would again have to undergo depression. It was not explained to me that serious side effects could occur such as memory problems, withdrawal symptoms, ticks, twitches and loss of mental acuity.
I've taken three different antidepressants and what I experienced is sort of like a muffler on a car. The medications muffle my anxiety, my depression, my pain at being alive in this world. They don't fix anything however. A muffler on a car will blunt the noise of the engine but if there's something wrong with the engine, it will blunt that sound too.
As I've come down off of antidepressants, each time the dose was lowered, I've experienced a fierce reoccurence of my primary neurological symptoms. Then those symptoms will calm again until the dose is dropped again.
I find this book to contain very well documented information. Dozens of clinical studies and reports are cited as well as the author's own personal observations. The studies and reports are largely available to be read by anyone who requests a copy, not just within the pages of this book. I recommend that anyone who is considering a long term treatment via these sorts of drugs should read this book beforehand, especially if their hmo or general practitioner has suggested it. As the author points out, many unqualified physicians are being pressured to throw a pill at us for the least sign of even normal anxiety or melancholy.
Don't let a pill muffle you.
Good book.......2005-10-05
Good review of the negative aspects of SSRIs (and there are many). Would have given it five stars, but he leaves out the very important fact that SSRIs can sometimes cause permanent sexual dysfunction after the drugs are stopped. This has long been overlooked by the medical community and should be included here. Do a goolge search for details.
Open Mind.......2005-02-22
I thought this book was interesting. If one is willing to listen to and/or believe the claims and promises set forth by the drug companies/makers of these anti-depressants, then surely one should be open and willing to learn about these same drugs from a different point of view.
I think many people would agree that we spend more time researching our next car or vacation than we do finding out about the things we put into our bodies, especially when it comes to chemicals and drugs. I think we must admit that the FDA, HMO systems and our own GP's are not infallible. This book is another tool for learning ways to take responsibility for, and manage our own health and well-being.
My son has been taking prozac for 2 years........2005-01-06
My son was prescribed prozac for anxiety and add along with anphetamines. I told the doctor that my son had facial tics and he prescribed these drugs anyway. When his tics got worse, the psychiatrist took him off the amphetamines. I did not know that prozac was a brain stimulant until I started reading this book. A year ago, the dr. started my son on Strattera, a new medication approved for treating ADD. The doctor also increased the dose of prozac from 10 mg to 20 mg. Now after reading this book, I wonder if these drugs will cause irreversible brain damage to my son who is 11 years old. Although the doctor who wrote this book does not treat children, and the book was written before Strattera was approved for ADD it has made me question my decision to put my young son on these powerful drugs. I want to read more about these drugs, and would like to get my son off of them because they don't seem to be helping him that much. I decided not to increase my son's dose of prozac to 20mg because it would be that much harder to taper off the medication in the future. The psychiatrist also wanted to increase the dose of strattera from 40 mg daily but I told him no. I only put my son on these drugs because his school pressured me to put him on them because of social problems he was having in school. Now I regret having put him on these drugs because I worry about permanent brain damage. Maybe if the insurance companies promoted getting psychotherapy and social skills training there would be less use of these drugs. But psychotherapy is more expensive than giving pills to children, therefore they discourage psycotherapy and limit the amount they will pay for it.

Customer Reviews:
Profoundly excellent!!!!!.......2007-06-13
This book is too good to be true! I owe the author my taste buds and my thanks. I made the pumpkin pie, and it was excellent. Light, whipped and softly sweetened. Someone's feedback suggested brown rice syrup. I don't think brown rice syrup would be a better tasting substitute, it has quite a unique flavor. However, if you can't find, or don't want to use the fruit sweet concentrate, you could try real maple syrup (for the pumpkin pie) in the same measurement the author uses . Which by the way, I had no problem finding the fruit concentrate! Just walked into a health food store, and there it was with all the honey. It is worth buying large amounts since it stores at room temperature, you can store it for very long periods. Being healthy has never been cheap. See if the stores that sell it will cut you a discount if you buy in bulk. Or try contacting different companies directly to see if they'll give you a direct discount on the fruit concentrate. I found one that will sell it to me almost wholesale. All I have to say is WOW! I suffer from Candida over-growth, and for whatever reason fruit sugar doesn't exacerbate the problem. I've been struggling for 12 years to bake sugar free or with natural sugar, with one flop after another. I actually started to breakdown and cry from joy after I tasted some of Ms. Feuer's cookies. Someone finally got it right! I highly recommend this book. Thank you, thank you Janice!!!!
It's a great book!.......2007-05-11
I have had this book for about 2 weeks and so far have tried 2 recipes, both with great success. I couldn't find the concentrated sweetener she talked about, so I followed her EASY instructions and made my own using canned frozen concentrated apple juice. It's not time consuming, as one reviewer said--it only takes 10 minutes, for Pete sake!! The gingerbread is amazing! I also am now using the fruit concentrate in recipes other than in this book, and they come out great! This is a blessing for those of us who don't want to use artificial sweeteners. It gets 5 stars from me!!
For the Apple Pie Alone.......2006-08-09
For the Apple Pie alone I would recommend this book to anyone interested in reducing the amount of refined sugar in their diet. Her recipe is one of the best I have tried and her pie crust was better than many I have tried.
Others have complained that fruit sweetener was expensive and hard to come by. I will admit it is more expensive than sugar, but I have never had trouble finding it and given that it is concentrated you use less of it than you would refined sugar; typically about half as much.
The only reason I did not give this book a 5 star rating is because I would have liked it better if the author had included other sweetener alternatives because I don't find fruit sweetener compatible with all flavors. For instance it works well in fruit desserts, but I did not care for it as a sweetener for pumpkin pie; for that I would prefer something like brown rice syrup.
Overall though the book is very well written, the instructions are very detailed and the author covers a wide range of desserts. It remains one of my favorites.
Love this book!.......2006-03-03
I have this book and love the recipes. The instructions are very detailed and help a lot in coming up with great results. The sweetener I use is the Wax Orchards sweetener. http://www.waxorchards.com/sweeteners.htm I can buy it at my local Whole Foods.
My favorite recipes? The coffee cake, oatmeal raisin cookies and cream puffs.
Culinary masterpiece!.......2002-05-29
My wife and I keep this cookbook handy in the kitchen at all times, where it can be easily reached when we feel the desire to whip up a tantalizing and healthy dessert. After sampling these recipes, we could never go back to sugar! The Very-Berry syrup is a delight on waffles, pancakes, and French Toast, and the Cranberry Banana Walnut bread graces our table every Sunday morning.
The author explains how to acquire commercially made fruit sweetener, or if one prefers alternative frozen fruit juice concentrates, there is an excellent explanation in Chapter 1, "The Fine Art of Baking", on how to prepare them. We found that chapter to be enlightening and inspirational, and it sets the tone for the entire book.

Customer Reviews:
from china marine to jap pow.......2002-04-04
being a 43 year old, and not yet born durring this period of history, I found that the life of this gentleman was exremely interesting to say the least. The personal letters home where by themselves worth reading this fine book. How fortunate for us all that he survived, and through his account of his experience, we can learn of a time that young men and women of his generation, stepped up and saved this country, and the world, from tryany.
Thank You Mr. Chittenden.......1999-08-19
Chittenden's book is historical, inspirational and highly compelling. Few books are able to accurately portray life of the China Marine turned Japanese Prisoner of War. His book reminded me of the gratitude that is owed to all those men who sacrificed so much for our nation.
