Book Description
In January 1999, Sarah Flannery, a sports-loving teenager from Blarney in County Cork, Ireland, was awarded Ireland's Young Scientist of the Year for her extraordinary research and discoveries in Internet cryptography. The following day, her story began appearing in Irish papers and soon after was splashed across the front page of the London Times, complete with a photo of Sarah and a caption calling her "brilliant." Just sixteen, she was a mathematician with an international reputation.
IN CODE is a heartwarming story that will have readers cheering Sarah on. Originally published in England and cowritten with her mathematician father, David Flannery, IN CODE is "a wonderfully moving story about the thrill of the mathematical chase" (Nature) and "a paean to intellectual adventure" (Times Educational Supplement). A memoir in mathematics, it is all about how a girl next door, nurtured by her family, moved from the simple math puzzles that were the staple of dinnertime conversation to prime numbers, the Sieve of Eratosthenes, Fermat's Little Theorem, googols-and finally into her breathtaking algorithm. Parallel with each step is a modest girl's own self-discovery-her values, her burning curiosity, the joy of persistence, and, above all, her love for her family.
Customer Reviews:
Refreshing approach to Number Theory.......2007-06-24
everybody knows that number theory is notoriously abstract and at times, completely unfathomnable to the layman's mind and at worst the realm of the pure intellect. But Sarah and her dad has done a excellent job in breaking that notion!
Stimulate someone's curiosity.......2007-01-08
If you know any youngster who's interested in math, do them a favor and buy them this book. Heck, even if they don't care about math, buy them this book anyway. I don't see how anyone who doesn't have a brick between their ears can fail to be inspired by the curiosity and enthusiasm of this down-to-earth young lady.
Ridiculously Pleasing...A Definite Read!.......2006-12-03
In Code is written by Sarah Flannery (who won Ireland's Young Scientist of the Year Award at the age of 16). Part biography, it discusses this young woman's remarkable journey to mathematical celebrity, beginning from her solving logic brainteasers from a very young age. Cultivated and influenced in large part by her mathematician father, Sarah attempts to develop a new algorithm that encrypts/decodes more quickly than RSA, the standard public key algorithm.
This book provides a detailed discussing of cryptography and mathematics and includes various technical questions/references that stumped me. As another reviewer wrote, "she digs deeply into number theory." Nevertheless, her fluid and engaging writing made up for these hurdles.
All in all, a definite read!
Good introduction to cryptology and an interesting story.......2006-07-06
"In Code" provides a readable and thorough overview of cryptology in the context of Sarah Flannery's experience in this field of science. The book provides both good coverage of the mathematics underlying encryption technologies used today and a compelling and interesting story of a bright young individual making her way through an exciting field of science.
I recommend this book as a good introduction to the field of cryptology with an overlay of an enjoyable character-driven storyline.
great story, great adventure.......2005-09-21
A very interesting account of a young person's algorithim for encoding information. The math is in the appendix for those who want ot understand the method she devised.

Book Description
This is the book you've been hearing about! Dr. Susan Rako has brought her groundbreaking message about the miraculous benefits of testosterone--the female hormone--to women and physicians around the world via Oprah!, Dateline NBC, the New York Times, the Congress on Women's Health, and the Today show, among others.
Dr. Rako is at the forefront of the research into testosterone replacement therapy, educating women and their doctors about the essential role testosterone plays in a woman's sexual and physical well-being.
Millions of women experience a traumatic loss of sexual desire during menopause. Dr. Rako's breakthrough research has brought to light the fact that the female body produces significant amounts of testosterone that are crucial to the healthy functioning of every woman's libido--linking decreased testosterone levels at the onset of menopause to diminished sex drive--as well as to the health of her bones and heart.
In this revised and updated edition, Dr. Rako introduces crucial new information that points to the need for adequate levels of testosterone as a key factor in protecting women from heart attack and stroke. The Hormone of Desire has become the standard-bearer for a new age of women's health, giving women and their doctors the opportunity to make informed decisions.
Customer Reviews:
Informative book.......2005-10-17
Dr Rako, a psychiatrist, offers a personal and sensitive view of the sex lives of women as they approach menopause. She speaks directly to the reader in clear and concise language and validates a woman's need for sexual function throughout her life. She offers useful suggestions to restore a woman's sexual response. This is an important book for women who have lost the ability to function sexually as a result of ovarian failure (menopause).
Every woman should read this book.......2005-09-17
Every woman should read this book to learn the truth about not just estrogen but testosterone hormonal changes she can expect or is having. General qnd OBGYN doctors should recommend this book.
The Hormone of Desire.......2002-03-21
Thank you so very much for writing this book and getting the word out to all of us! I sincerely thought that the symptoms that were gradually emerging and causing a negative effect on the quality of my life were a 'normal' part of aging. I was wrong! After reading the book and highlighting the parts that I felt pertained to me, I leant it to my doctor. After reading it, he agreed to try testosterone replacement therapy. I feel like a new woman and my husband is going to send my doctor flowers!
Finally a book (too short), for women's vital energy!!.......1998-11-28
I was happy to find a book that took into consideration not only a womans libido, but also the positive effects on bone density, loss of vital energy, fatigue, heart, diminished sense of well being, reduction in muscle tone, atrophy, inability to climax, incontinence, etc.etc. Too many doctors are ready to put women on anti-depressants feeling that these things are mostly psychological rather than hormonal in going through the menopause. Susan Rako says Testosterone may be the key!!! Its been known for years what the lack of, can do to men, but it seems women have been ignored. Plus I liked the fact that Susan speaks from her own personal experience. I was thrilled to find this information and agree that it can make a tremendous difference. . This is a small book written fairly simply, but could have been more in depth and detailed, but definitely worth the reading. D.T.
Power Surge endorses Dr. Susan Rako's Research.......1998-01-13
Dr. Susan Rako, author of "The Hormone Of Desire: The Truth About Sexuality, Menopause and Testosterone," has been a frequent guest in Power Surge on America Online (keyword: PowerSurge) and on the Web's award-winning site, ...the community for women at midlife and in menopause. Dr. Rako's book is the end result of years of not only medical research on the benefits of testosterone therapy for women with sexual libido issues (pre and postmenopause), but as a personal odyssey to find answers to her own issues during menopause.
I have recommended Dr. Rako's book to literally thousands of women passing through Power Surge who complain of a lessened sexual desire or none at all. This is a very common complaint during menopause, and there is no reason why any woman should suffer this loss. Testosterone, taken in small doses, can be highly effective in restoring a sense of general well-being, sexual libido and a return to a normal life. No woman should suffer this loss at any age, especially at a time when our life expectancy has increased so dramatically.
We take medication for blood pressure, yes? We take medication for diabetes and heart issues, so why not testosterone for our sexuality?
Hats off to you, Dr. Rako. You done good!

Simple but Good.......2007-08-23
This book proves that you don't need a lot of bottles and jars of pre-prepared foods to get a good meal on the table. I have cooked from this cookbook all summer and have already incorporated a lot of the recipes in my kid's lunch-boxes for school. It's not to say you don't have to plan, but I can make a meal when I have the time, stow it in the frig, and serve it when I'm ready. I thought when I got this book I would quickly bore of cold and room temperature food, but everything is flavorful and fresh.
Indeed, Simple and Fresh!.......2006-08-28
As with the other books by Viana La Place, I like all of the recipes and find them all simple and quite good, but again, only thing lacking are photos, otherwise, this cookbook would probably get 5 stars.
One of My Favorite Cookbooks.......2003-05-02
Make the Yellow Bell Peppers in Vinegar, Sugar and Oregano. I have made this dish many times to take to parties, and there hasn't been a single occasion on which I haven't been asked for the recipe. People GORGE themselves on this stuff. They love it. Another consistent winner is the White Bean, Red Onion, Tomato and Oregano Salad; it makes a terrific side dish with a broiled flank steak - the entire dinner can be ready in 15 minutes. The Torta Rustica takes some effort, but it really is a showstopper. More importantly, the authors' concept of simple foods prepared with top-quality ingredients makes a wonderful philosophy. Their emphasis on olive oil yields a cookbook full of delicious recipes low in cholesterol, and tons of fresh vegetables. Healthy, sophisticated and delectable. These are ideal recipes to take with you to a picnic or party, since they can be served cold or at room temperature.
Delicious, imaginative, easy-to-prepare recipes.......2001-09-04
This is the first cookbook review I've submitted. After preparing yet another scrumptious dish from this amazing collection of recipes, I was moved to share my delight with other potential readers. Everyone who has tasted the recipes I've made has praised them highly. Their simplicity belies their good taste. The two desserts I've made were huge hits - poaced peaches with amareti cookies and prunes in port over ice cream - yum! The grilled green or golden zucchini is amazing!
I'm lucky to have the ability to read a recipe and imagine it accurately in my mind. I am confident that every recipe I've savored with my eyes will live up to its promise on my taste buds. I've not been disappointed yet!
Great recipes for casual entertaining.......1999-10-30
Contains recipes for casual entertaining which can be made ahead of time and served at room temperature. Good ideas for combining ingredients and for menus.
Book Description
Sister and brother team Lori and Ryan Pacchiano founded High Maintenance Bitch in 2002. Their goal was to create a line of fashionable clothing, accessories, furniture, grooming products, and more for the chic canine. The Pacchianos’ success uncovered a previously unnoticed obsession among socialites — and socialite wannabes — with making their four-legged companions as stylish as they are. Utilizing their fashion and humor sensibilities, the authors have prepared this witty guide to raising a poufed-up pup. It’s all here, including how to accessorize Fidette and learning commands in different languages, to how to maintain one’s own fabulousness while cleaning up “twinkle sparkle” (their terminology), to using Princess as a date facilitator for that handsome hunk. Practical information filigrees the fun, whether it’s instituting a slimming “Rex-ercise Regimen” or training her to keep her cold, wet nose out of people’s “business.” Included are more than 100 illustrations inspired by fabulous fashion website DailyCandy.

If you own a little dog, The High Maintenance Bitch is a "user friendly" guide to grooming, etiquette, discipline, and more, all tailored to the female dog owner as concerned about style as about dog training. Humor abounds in a guide covering how to gain romance despite handling a small amorous dog in traffic, and more. Pet owners will love The High Maintenance Bitch , as will the chic upward-bound girl who understands social encounters and the possibilities of pets in public places.

Book Description
The Harrowsmith Perennial Garden is your key to a beautiful, well-designed garden, featuring flowers that will bloom continually from spring through fall and provide a progression of eye-catching color throughout the growing season.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent guide for northern perennial lovers.......2000-11-08
This book is definitely a favorite of mine in making my garden plans. The authors use their own Ontario perennial garden to illustrate and guide the reader through the planning and seasonal chores involved in a perennial garden. Although their garden style is more formal than mine, they cover choosing, planting and care of perennials in a way that is easily applied in my more casual cottage gardens. Each month has detailed cultivation and care information for many varieties that will bloom at that time, helping with the daunting task of planning so that a garden has continued bloom throughout the growing season. Attention to garden "bones," the structure that holds the garden, is demonstrated in their snow-covered garden photos. Even barren of life and buried in snow, their gardens are interesting to look at, giving us hope that we too can have lovely gardens year round.
Pertinent,easy to read, entertaining, informative........1998-04-22
I use this book like one of my little garden bibles.Easy format, and very informative.I like the fact that he gardens in Ontario, and writes about the same climate that I contend with!Definitely one of my favorite gardening writers!!

Book Description
Who were Iowa's historic architects? In this extensively researched dictionary, Wesley Shank answers that question by providing biographies of more than two hundred architects who practiced in Iowa before 1950 and who maintained an ofce in the state for at least part of their careers.
Among the prominent Iowa architects of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were a remarkable few who had little training in architecture; their natural talents and their capacity for hard work made up for their lack of experience. Beginning in 1927, however, an Iowa architect had to meet state requirements of experience and training in order to practice. Shank includes an introduction to the history of the profession in Iowa: the development of professional education and training, the founding of professional societies and their roles, the different personalities and talents of the architects, the demography of architectural offices in the state, and the relative importance of Iowa architects both statewide and nationally.
For each architect Shank has gathered as much personal and professional information as possible: dates and places of birth and death; parents, spouses, and children; education and professional training; personality and competency; when and where they practiced, with whom, and when their partnerships began and ended; what roles they played in their communities and their profession; and the representative buildings they designed.
As a reection of both national and state history, Iowa's Historic Architects will be valuable to professionals in the elds of architecture, American history, and historic preservation as well as to general readers.
Customer Reviews:
This "Dictionary" is frustratingly incomplete.......2004-09-07
Iowa's Historic Architects is a collective biography of architects who worked in the Hawkeye State prior to 1950. Professor Emeritus Wesley I. Shank (Iowa State University) has been writing on Iowa's architectural history for over 25 years. Iowa's Historic Architects has concise biographical entries on 234 architects, each with a short list of building attributions and references.
The book is not presented as a history of architecture in Iowa. I found it essential to have the 1993 Buildings of Iowa (David Gebhard and Gerald Mansheim, in the Society of Architectural Historians "Buildings of the United States" series) at hand while reading Shank's book. Gebhard and Mansheim provide the necessary architectural survey, maps, photographs, and thematic arguments. With this supporting information, the men profiled in Iowa's Historic Architects can be placed in context. A comprehensive reference dictionary of regional architects and their work, in tandem with such a good survey overview, should be an invaluable research tool.
The biographies of Iowa architects are organized on the basic information that defined each man as an architect: where they got their training, where they worked, with whom they were associated, and a selection of their projects. Many of the entries read like obituary notices, with benedictions and lists of the surviving family members at the architect's death. Few of the entries have detrimental information. A reader might infer that Iowa architects were immune to incompetence, bad business, legal battles, character flaws, and passion. The entries include too much genealogy; the dates of birth of an architect's children, for example, generally have no value in evaluating the architect's career.
Some 50 architects whose offices were not in Iowa, but who designed buildings in Iowa, are included in Iowa's Historic Architects. These sketches are properly concise. Professor Shank includes references for each architect (but not specific citations for each building attribution). The book has a useful introductory essay on the history of architectural practice in Iowa, with good details about the implementation of professional ethics and standards of practice. Appendices show where the Iowa architects acquired architectural education and the Iowa cities where they had offices. The bibliography includes National Register reports, the files of the Iowa State Historic Preservation Office, and the 1955 AIA directory of living architects.
Regional dictionaries of architects (or any reference book) may be judged by three standards. The information must be accurate; the information must be inclusive, within the book's geographical and chronological limits; and the information must be accessible. I cannot dispute the accuracy of the information included, but Iowa's Historic Architects fails to fulfill the second and third standards. The book has three fatal flaws:
1. The book is not indexed. This severely restricts access to the information. To learn, for example, who might have designed the wonderful Methodist Church in Menlo, or the Art Deco municipal swimming pool in Decorah, you must read every page of Iowa's Historic Architects with no surety that you'll find anything. Even with the Gebhard & Mansheim volume at hand, the absence of an index is unforgivable. Reference books must be indexed!
2. The book has only a small selection of buildings designed by or attributed to each architect. Architect William Thomas Proudfoot designed hundreds of Iowa buildings, but his entry - the longest in the book - lists only fifty projects. For other architects, Shank includes no more than a dozen Iowa building attributions. How can we assess the achievement of an architect, except by examination of his work? Less glamorous projects, such as apartment buildings, livery stables, commercial remodelings, warehouses, and Sunday School additions, are as valuable as any courthouse, school, or cathedral to characterize an architect's competence. Similarly, scholars pursuing individual properties, typologies, regional histories, or other building patterns will find Iowa's Historic Architects to be frustratingly incomplete.
3. The book fails to list many Iowa architects. The Clark W. Bryan Directory of Architects and Classified Directory of First Hands in the Building Trades (1890) (Springfield, Massachusetts: Clark W. Bryan & Co., 1890) lists 52 architects who had offices in Iowa. Twenty-five of these men, at least, are not found in Iowa's Historic Architects. Another primary source, Hendricks' Commercial Register of the United States For Buyers and Sellers (1918) (New York: S. E. Hendricks Co., Inc., 1918) names 118 Iowa architects. Fifty-nine of these men are not included in Iowa's Historic Architects. In each of these two windows, fifty percent of the Iowa architects are neglected! This does not reflect a conscious "editing-out" of minor architects, for Shank includes Frank Fiedler, C. B. Lakin, J. E. Howe, Henry Throne, and several other obscure Iowa architects about whom almost nothing has been recorded. It appears, rather, that the primary research was inadequate. This is not an inclusive dictionary.
A biographical dictionary of Iowa architects should strive to include every Iowa citizen who was identified, however fleetingly, as an architect, and every out-of-state architect who designed anything in Iowa. It should include every Iowa building and project, built or not, that can be attributed to these architects, with all project references cited. It should be indexed by project sponsor, by locality, and by building type. Iowa's Historic Architects fails on all of these counts.
Scholars requiring information on Iowa's built environment will consult Iowa's Historic Architects. They will be disappointed. This is not the authoritative reference book that it should be.
A cogent gold mine of information for building researchers.......1999-05-06
Shank's clear prose is a gold mine of information on a hard-to-nail topic: biographical data on architects in the state of Iowa. A brief summary of the development of the education and licensing of architects is also quite useful. The individual biographical sketches are engaging in and of themselves. A very useful book.
