Book Description
Bill Lawrence served his country for thirty-seven years in a remarkable naval career filled with triumphs and adversities. A naval aviator and test pilot who commanded a fighter squadron in the Vietnam War, he was shot down in combat and held by the North Vietnamese at the notorious Hanoi Hilton prison for six years. During his imprisonment he became a hero among heroes, demonstrating superior qualities of leadership, physical strength, and mental acumen, tap-coding messages to keep his sanity while withstanding solitary confinement and regular torture sessions. Upon release from captivity, Lawrence learned that his wife and the mother of their children had divorced him and remarried. Although these events had a severe emotional impact on him, he resumed his distinguished naval career, rising swiftly through the ranks, remarrying, and being named to such prestigious positions as Commander of the Third Fleet, Superintendent of the Naval Academy, and Chief of Naval Personnel. In this autobiography, Lawrence credits much of his resolve and ability to overcome difficulties to his strong and nurturing parents, his youth in Nashville, Tennessee, his experiences at the U.S. Naval Academy (where he served as brigade commander and earned letters in three varsity sports), and to the love and support of his wife Diane. With the help of his friend and writer Zip Rausa, the admiral tells his story without glossing over the darker elements. This recounting of his path on an extraordinary journey through life is uniquely American and filled with lessons for us all.
Customer Reviews:
A superb naval autobiography.......2007-02-28
In the spirit of full disclosure, I'll acknowledge that I knew Admiral Lawrence and always had great admiration for him. This book captures exactly who he was. It conveys his sense of patriotism and dedication to mission. It truly communicates what the career of a highly successful naval officer is like. He takes it step by step from his days as a midshipman through his service as a flag officer after returing from Vietnam, where he was a POW for a number of years. The book is matter of fact and to the point. I truly had the sense that we were sitting together and he was telling me the story of his life. In addition to his achievements as a Naval Aviator and his experience as a POW, Admiral Lawrence held positions of responsibility in the Pentagon, as Superintendant (president) of the Naval Academy, and as a fleet commander. The chapters in which he discussed his youth in Tennessee are also moving, as are his discussions about his family. Anyone who has an interest in what a life of naval service truly entails should be delighted by this excellent autobiography.
A Man for All Seasons.......2006-10-11
As one who served with Admiral Lawrence in the Fourth Allied POW Wing in Hanoi, NVN and later at USNA, Annapolis MD, I can verify that this is a quality look at an ethical officer, gentleman, husband and father - a man for all seasons.
The macho posturing of some fighter pilots, the political posturing of some in the Flag Mess, the rewriting of some in respect to POW history and the tendency of most to make ourselves look good are missing. If you want this bloviating, go someplace else.
You can catch the excitement of flight training, the exhilaration of carrier flight operations, the challenge of test piloting, the disappointment of being literally a heartbeat away from the space program, the mundane plodding of being a "horse holder" (Admiral's Aide), the loneliness of Officer of the Deck underway, the delicate balance of civilian control by political appointees (the "Christmas help") & loyalty to one's service and shipmates, the solitary isolation of command and the agony of betrayal - all this in one book - this book.
There is no attempt to justify one's life in this work. There is no effort to burnish one's image in the book. There are no craven attacks to get even for real or imagined wrongs. There are not tales told out of school or sly innuendoes directed at those currently in power. If you want this, go read the tabloids - the Washington Post or the NY Times.
This is the sometimes exciting, sometimes mundane but always interesting story of a decent human being who tried to make the most of his God given gifts in the service of his country. His only wish was to do what is right. I never heard him ask anything for himself.
If your want a refreshing account of the adventures of a true American hero, ethical to the core and loyal to a fault, then you want to obtain this book for your library. It is in mine.

Book Description
Theodore Roosevelt led the charge in the 1890s for the creation of a US fleet of modern, steel-hulled, heavily-armed warships. The future president and his intellectual soul mate, Captain Alfred Thayer Mahan, championed the theory of sea power to fuel America's emerging global expansion. The US victory in the Spanish-American War of 1898 vindicated these views. These essays chart the role of Roosevelt and the war in the origins of US sea power.

Customer Reviews:
Not enough info.......2002-07-20
I read the book and it was informative, but i don't think it was in-depth enough. It didn't tell you exact steps that need to be taken to begin an officer career. Also, after i read the book, I did some more research contacting the navy directly and they gave me some straight facts that really made me re-evaluate if this is what i want to do. i felt like the book tried to sell the navy too much, rather than tell it like it is.
Comprehensive Guide to Officer Programs.......2001-07-19
I have done much research on the Internet but this book is simply excellent. The advantage of this book is clear....immediate access to quality information on most US Naval Officer programs.
Best Resource Available.......2001-04-13
As a commissioned naval officer with 20 years service, I have found this book extremely helpful for counseling enlisted sailors about commissioning programs. The book is chocked full of helpful hints and details not available in any other publication I have ever found. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking information about Navy officer programs.
Good--If you have no access to the internet!.......2001-02-22
I was looking forward to reading this book because I thought it would offer some great insights into becoming an Naval officer. I was sorely disapointed. There was nothing in this book that I could not get from looking on the internet for 5 minutes. I could not believe that any book professing to tell about the Navy could be so devoid of details on job descriptions, service reqirements, specifics on what makes a person a competitive candidate. I was hoping for insights from a veteran recruiter. I ended up with an extended brochure that I read long ago on the internet. Don't waste your money.
If the Navy was perfect, this would be one of its Bibles........2000-07-21
Excellent book that fills in a lot of gaps that the Naval Instructions leave out (especially if you are applying to OCS). I would have rated it 5 stars, except for one glaring omission: The book fails to mention how much of an uphill administrative battle applying for OCS is (just TRY dealing with your Command Career Counselor on this). I turned my package in 3 months ago, and it STILL hasn't left my command yet. One of the problems with the process is that the Navy's instructions on how to apply for some of the programs are very, very vague. Also, all 3 of the CCC's I've had at my present command had absolutely no idea on how to help me, because they all had little experience in dealing with officer programs. My advice is to find a personable officer in your command (preferably an Ensign who has just been commissioned through your program of interest), ask for their advice, and follow the letter formats given in the book VERBATIM!

Book Description
In a career that spanned two and a half decades, Bob Kenedy was present when history was being made. As a newly-enlisted sailor, he served on ships that transported President Franklin D. Roosevelt to meetings with South American and Canadian leaders. During World War II he fought in some of the most important--and bloody--battles in the South Pacific. During the Cold War he worked for Naval intelligence and security, safeguarding national secrets. He also assisted top German scientists to emigrate to the United States. The Korean War found him back at sea--and back in battle--again. Through his memoirs, we can experience these events firsthand.

Wittgenstein has most often been treated as a thinker whose ideas can be discussed independently of any intellectual tradition. Garver, a leading exponent of Wittgenstein's thought, insists upon-and demonstrates in detail-the mutual relevance of Wittgenstein's work and the tradition of Western philosophy.

Quite a disappointment.......2007-09-26
I thought that I would receive a book with clear meal plans for avoiding hypoglycemic episodes. What I got was another "reduce your stress and take care of yourself" book, with an extra bonus chapter about how helpful others found the previous edition. I am disappointed. What a bunch of hoo-haa (if that's how you spell hoo-haa). I'd send it back for a refund but the shipping charges would cancel out most of the refund. Headed for the recycle bin...
Very Simple Great for first-time info.......2005-09-20
This book is great for first time information on hypoglycemia. I wanted more information on what to eat and not to eat, BUT it did give me alot of information on some other things i did not know. Recommended if you don't know anything about it.

Customer Reviews:
Love Pike Place Market but the cookbook?.......2007-01-11
Pike Place Market is one of my favorite places to visit. I was excited to get the cookbook and the recipes do sound yummy. However, they also require a lot of work & ingredients that I don't have time to shop for. Maybe someday when I have a lot of time on my hands....
A big book in a gift-size package.......2005-08-23
The Pike Place Market is a destination point for anyone visiting Seattle. The market is a vibrant maze of fish stalls, vegetable vendors, meat purveyors, etc. To local foodies, the market is shopping central, especially for seafood. Tourists love the sense of history, plus the entertaining fishmongers singing and acrobatically tossing whole fish across the counter.
Braiden Rex-Johnson, an expert on the Pike Place Market, captures the essense of the market in this gift-size cookbook. The stunning photographs bring alive the color and commotion of the market, and the exceptional recipes reflect the diversity of Northwest cuisine. Don't miss trying the recipe for Baked Whole Salmon with Vietnamese Dipping Sauce. I made it for a dinner party and it was a dramatic presentation. The Fried Oyster Caesar Salad was another winner, along with the Shellfish Risotto. I'm looking forward to trying many more, whether I'm cooking for the family or entertaining friends.
Easy to use. And a great gift........2005-07-01
I was given this book as a gift and I'm delighted with it. It's sized smaller, like a gift book--so portable and easy to use. I appreciate Rex-Johnson's introduction that focuses and guides consumers on ocean and fish sustainability. This is befitting any bonafide cook from the Northwest (or anywhere!). Besides great recipes, she includes a helpful Appendix of techniques, everything from making bread crumbs to a chiffonade. The book seems basic enough, and sophisticated enough, for a broad range of cooking skills. And the photos and presentation are beautiful, interwoven with historial trivia related to fishing. There's a lot in this little gem.
Great Recipes and Gift Idea.......2000-07-14
This is one of my favorite cookbooks. In addition to truly delicious and different recipes, it includes historical notes about the Pike Place Market - which is one of the oldest fish and farmer markets in the U.S. - interesting facts about finny creatures. bivalves, and crustaceans (did you know that the plastic-like quill inside a squid is the vestige of its primeval molluscan shell?) , and the many people and cultures that make up and sell at the Market. The recipes are a bouillabaisse of cultures too: Thai, Cajun, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Native American, Sephardic, Mediterranean, Mexican - and you will find a number of accompaniments, which perfectly complement the entrees. A great gift (my wife has shared many copies), and a delightful read even if you don't feel like cooking. My only criticism - I wish her husband/architect, Mr. Johnson, had been commissioned for the cover illustration. His drawings that are interspersed with the text add interest and depth to Braiden's fine writing. Also, this book does not replicate her other fine works.

Both a how-to craft book and a decorating guide, Wreaths offers 51 projects for delightful wreaths--complete with step-by-step instructions--honoring the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Designed for use throughout the year, these wreaths are made from materials inspired by their locations: i.e. an oak leaf and acorn wreath as a homage to the nation's capital; cranberries for Massachusetts; and golden wheat to symbolize Oklahoma. Full color.
Customer Reviews:
best book on wreaths.......2006-08-17
I bought 4 other books on wreaths by other authors, and this one is the most inspirational one with clear directions. Not fussy. We turn to it every year when it is time to decorate the house for Christmas.
Beauty!.......2005-06-28
I am not from the United States and still adored this book. The photographs are amazing and the ideas are astonishing and so symbolic. Martha and one of her staff members embarked to create a wreath for each of the states, and each wreath reflects some natural element of the state in question. Whether it's wheat, moss, succulents, palm leaves, pinecones, tumble weeds, sunflowers, grasses, pine branches or sea shells the ideas will inspire you. Martha's introduction shows a photo of Martha on the balcony of the White House where she writes about her exhilerating experience decorating the White House with Hilary Clinton for Christmas one year and how that very American event inspired the idea for the series of wreaths and the book. This is a must-have for any Martha fan!!
Great American Wreaths: The Best of Martha Stewart Living.......2000-10-14
Just as Martha's magazine is a joy of visual delights, this book get's the creative juices flowing. Divided into wreath making by types: wire wreaths, living wreaths, gathered wreaths etc. it is also written with a focus of wreaths presented by the 50 States with the bounties of each state proudly displayed in stunning wreath form. Maybe because it is fall and the beautiful changing leaves in Minnesota make me feel all homey, I am stirred to actual creation. Unlike some of Martha's projects when I say to myself, "yeah, sure...." I truly believe I can do these! This would make a wonderful birthday or Holiday gift to anyone who loves visual delight or poking in nature. "It's a good thing."
Gorgeous, easy to make ideas for every season!.......1999-08-25
This book is the easiest I have ever read on wreath making! They have several gorgeous wreaths that are truly amazing! I recommend this book to anyone who loves wreaths, Martha, or easy crafts.

Backyard Secrets of the Garden Experts starts with the supposition that the best way to learn about gardening is over the backyard fence with an exchange of expertise between experienced gardeners. That tone of casual advice, of sharing ideas and solutions, contributes to the charm of this book, along with plentiful color photographs and a simple-to-use, color-coded arrangement. Turn to the pages edged with purple for tips on starting your garden, green for soil-building secrets, or pink for pest and disease control (all organic, of course--this is Rodale, after all).
Beginning gardeners will dip into the book when confronted with gardening problems or when searching for inspiration; more experienced gardeners will benefit, too, in areas that are new to them. Information is detailed and practical, in sections on saving and storing seed, propagation, building a water garden, and terracing a slope. A useful chapter is on flower gardening, which contains a clear and complete discussion on companion planting, proving this title may be basic, but it's not simplistic. The author goes beyond coordination of flower color to emphasize harmony of shape, texture, and form, all of which are far more important in the long run than matching bloom color for a few weeks.
At the back of the book is a chart, divided by regions of the country, that will appeal to gardeners of all levels: the expert's month-by-month list of garden chores. Check here to see what you should be doing in your garden this month--oops, haven't yet mulched tender plants or gotten bulbs in the ground yet? Such charts serve as excellent reminders of how to care for the garden year-round. --Valerie Easton
Book Description

All of the experts are contributors to the extensive American Garden Guides series--now they can be found in one volume.
No matter where they live or what their growing conditions, readers can learn from experts who know and work in their region. Sidebars provide details on specific gardening techniques while lavish color photographs and illustrations make Backyard Secrets from the Garden Experts a visual feast.
Customer Reviews:
The Too Precious Child.......2005-09-03
Wisdom from two experienced pediatric specialists and a wife, mother and writer distilled in an easy to read and accessible book. I read this when my own children were small and re-read it recently as they are graduating from high school.
I highly recommend this book to all parents and parents-to-be.
Full of wisdom.......2004-10-03
I picked up this book for something to read while my kids were in the library. I wasn't concerned about being an over-involved parent, but was curious about the subject. The book started slowly, but the more I read it, the more I liked it.
This is not a pop psychology book. It doesn't tell you the 3 or 12 easy steps to successful parenting. What it does is clearly outlines the issues surrounding the emotional growth of children, and not just "too precious" children.
The book is not particularly easy reading. A few times it drifts into psychological terms. But I found that with a little effort, and some re-reading, it was all understandable. (I am not trained in psychology, but have an interest in it.)
The value of this book is that is thoroughly explores the developmental issues around "too precious" children and their parents. The authors have empathy for parents who have difficulty giving their children what is best for them, and offers them support and advice. Unfortunately the advice is not simple. We each have to look at ourselves and our children and to strive to be objective in order to see what's in the child's best interest.
I think it is very hard to explain, in layman's terms, what it means to be a "too precious" child. It is not the same as a spoiled child, or a too-driven child, or an over-protected child, although it has similarities with these three. The book manages, in my opinion, to clearly say what it is. The more I read it, the clearer it became. And unlike most child-rearing books I have read, by the end of the book I was hungry for more.
I strongly recommend this book. It has the feel of authority to it. It is written by child development experts. It is full of wisdom. It comes closer than any any other book I have read to being the owner's manual that should have come with our babies.
I expect some people won't find the book as valuable as I have. It is a bit heavy reading, and although it has very many useful anecdotes, it doesn't provide lists of "what to do in situation X", that can be useful. The anecdotes are often not clear about whether the parent made a good or bad choice. But in almost all cases, after a little reading, I understood the intent of the story.
It is hard work to understand the subtle issues around "too precious" parenting. This book makes it easier. The examples are powerful, especially the later chapters - when the authors discuss adolescence and adulthood of "too precious" children.
Not very well written.......2001-12-12
In the beginning of the book, it gives an informal quiz which I feel it has nothing to do on how you raise your child. The guiz lists factors that may put parents at risk for being too overinvolved or an overprotected parent.
Chapter 1: The "too precious" epidemic
Chapter 2: The Children Who Mean Too Much
Chapter 3: The Perils of Being Too Special
Chapter 4: From Adoration to Seperation
Chapter 5: The Vows of Love
Chapter 6: Learning to be a not too Precious Parent
Chapter 7: Adolescence: A New Beginning
Chapter 8: The Perils of Being a Too Precioous Adolescence
Chapter 9: The Too Precious Child Grows Up

This book is full of scenarios which the authors discusses why that child is "too precious." While I did agree on some of the things they had to say, I didn't like the way the book was written. I felt the authors didn't do a good job of discussing on how we can avoid a child from being "too precious"

Uncle was civilian P.O.W. from Guam .......2007-01-20
My uncle was Alton R. (Andy) White, the North Dakota farm boy refer to in this book. He was a 25 year old civilian welder when the Japanese attacked Guam. He never told much about his years of captivity, and his health was never very good after his return. One reference in this book did bring back an incident that he related. A couple of stry cats would come around the camp, so my uncle made a slingshot and killed them. He and his buddies were'nt hungry enouth to eat them at that time, but a few days later, they were, and did.
Thank you James O. Thomas for this important piece of history.
A True Story.......2006-04-08
My grandfather was a civilian during WWII and was one of those "Trapped with the Enemy". James O Thomas tells in detail of these years and the hardship that the prisoners encountered. Thank you for a gift to our family. This is history that we had only heard as short stories from grandpa.
Civilian Internees from Guam in Japanese POW camp.......2002-12-05
This is a riveting book. A must read for anyone with an interest in WWII, particularly in the Pacific. This story deserves to be widely publicized as it describes a POW situation hardly known or remembered.
Well written by the survivor who experienced it first hand.
The forgotten heroes of the Pacific War.......2002-09-10
"Trapped with the Enemy" is a well written and graphically descriptive story of the American civilians seized when Guam fell to the Japanese two days after Pearl Harbor. Rarely mentioned in any war histories were these American civilians sent as contractors to build up the defenses of Guam or the men who serviced the glamorous Pan American "Clippers" that reached from San Francisco to Hong Kong.
Captured and forgotten, Thomas and his fellow prisoners ran the gamut of emotions from exhilaration when they saw Doolittle's bombers streak across Kobe... to the abject fear when firebombs rained down to destroy the once mighty Japan. Courage and faith kept them together as their bodies wasted from starvation. The war's end came only days before they were slated for execution.
"Trapped with the Enemy" is one of the finest books relating the POW story since Gavin Daws put pen to paper.
