Book Description
With the Spaniards' return to Santa Fe, the calculated alliance of some Pueblo Indians, and the fierce resistance of others, the decade of the 1690s is pivotal. Governor Diego de Vargas, leading his armed Hispanic colonists and Indian allies, scores three remarkable victories over resisters fortified on mesa tops. Then, in 1696, they manage to suppress a second revolt of the northern Pueblos. An uneasy peace settles over the kingdom and provinces of New Mexico.
Pedro Rodríguez Cubero accedes to the governorship in July 1697 against don Diego's wishes. Bitter colonists, emboldened now to testify against the reconqueror, accuse him of profiting unduly from the enterprise and ignoring their well-being. Their passions intrude. Governor Rodríguez Cubero has Vargas confined to quarters and there he nurses his ill-feelings for nearly three years and conspires with a circle of partisans.
That Disturbances Cease, volume 5 in The Journals of don Diego de Vargas, documents the legal maneuvering at Santa Fe, Mexico City, and Madrid, as sitting governor, former governor, and groups of contending colonists struggle to make themselves heard and advance their interests. At issue are government subsidies to maintain and defend the precarious colony. Finally, in 1700, the viceroy orders Vargas to appear in Mexico City, present his accounts, and justify the actions of his administration.
This volume continues the high standards for translation, annotation, and introduction evident in all the books in the series. The editors have located and brought together from archives in Spain, Mexico, and the United States documentary materials bearing on the Vargas era.
Volume 5 in The Journals of don Diego de Vargas.

Scorched Earth policy at the New York Met.......2006-03-21
This book appeals to a select audience. Those who enjoy reading about the great chase for the treasures of the world. Treasures that wars have been fought over. Those who enjoy reading about the super-rich and their foibles. Those who enjoy reading about the intrigues and back stabbings in elite organizations (this book makes The Apprentice look like a pillow fight). And finally those who enjoy reading about a man's all consuming ambition to succeed and yet through it all remain passionate about great art. If any of the above is your cub of tea then you are going to love this. I absolutely recommend his later book 'False Impressions'. And yes, the author spares no punches in his analysis of alot of famous people.
mummies.......2005-11-15
This is a great book for reading and as a resource guide book. Makes you feel like your there
SPILLING THE BEANS ABOUT THE MET REVOLUTION.......2002-11-19
This is a refreshing book, about the author's personal quest to transform the Metropolitan Museum of Art of N.Y., during his tenure as director of the museum (1967-1977).
When Hoving arrived as Director, he assessed the Met as a disorganized institution, a collection of collections, located in a mixture of buildings and architectures that gave "the impression of something worse than incomplete; it seemed forgotten and forlorn...." At the time Hoving was offered the post, he was commissioner of Parks, under the tenure of Mayor John Lindsay, whose mayoral campaign the author had joined with a leave of absence from... the Met, where, after receiving his Ph.D. in Art from Princeton University, he went from assistant curator to curator of the Medieval Department and the Cloisters. And indeed, it was Lindsay, when told the news about the directorship, who said: "...have you considered the boredom? Seems to me the place is dead. But, Hoving, you'll make the mummies dance." Hence the title of the book.
The story is a fascinating, at times egotistical and gossipy account of what it took to revolutionize an institution like the Met. From the seduction of the patrons and trustees, such as Nelson Rockefeller, Walter Annenberg, Brooke Astor, Robert Lehman, to the development of a network of experts, smugglers and famous collectors, Hoving takes us on a journey that reveals a lot about the inner workings of power, expertise and glamour, in the art world.
At the end, we are led to believe Hoving's final insight about his tenure:
"With the creative energy of the Trustees who had been on my side and the stuff who supported me, the most sweeping revolution in the history of art museums had taken place. The Met, once an elitist, stiff, gray, and slightly moribund entity, came alive. THE MUMMIES DID DANCE......"
Dancing to the mummies' tune.......2002-07-23
This lively look at the life and work of a director of a world-class art museum not only educates and entertains, it shocks. The mummies do, indeed, dance as Thomas Hoving takes on the Park Service to expand the museum, wiggles around UNESCO and fights a host of governments for his favorite works of art, plays one collection against another, trades, deals and bluffs his way toward making the Metropolitan Museum of Art what it is today.
Hoving has a steam-roller personality, the energy of nuclear fission and no small amount of self-confidence. His educational background -- Princeton and an archeological expedition or two in Europe -- isn't as impressive as you'd expect, but he makes up any shortcomings with old-fashioned chutzpah.
After some experience in minor jobs and a city job with the Parks Department, he's told he may be selected as director of the Metropolitan so he looks the place over and makes some notes: "The museum needs reform. Sprucing up. Dynamics. Electricity. The place is moribund. Gray. It's dying. The morale of staff is low. The energy seems to have vanished. You've been missing all the fine exhibits...."
This book shows how MOMA gets from where it was then to what it is now -- the politics, infighting, backbiting, sneaking, smuggling and downright stealing it takes to make a museum one of the finest in the world. It's also a fairly realistic look at the glittering personalities and the haute monde of the New York City of a few decades ago.
This is a rousing tale that should hold the interest of any reader, art lover or no. Never mind that Hoving doesn't hesitate to toot his own horn. This is, after all, his book. Even taking the stories with a massive grain of salt, they're always riveting and vastly amusing. No one will ever say of Thomas Hoving that he has no opinion on the people and the issues of the art world or that he hesitates to express them.
I can't imagine anyone not being fascinated by this marvelous picture of the fabulous and often sham world of art museums and the people who support them and run them.
A gossipy delight.......2000-02-21
This treasure was passed to me by a gallery owner who said I would love it and she was right. Hoving gives you just the right amount of background to ensnare you in Art politics and society without overdoing it and boring the reader who isn't that into art. The book is peppered with anecdotes about the glitterati of the New York and international art/high society scene that ends up having the tone of Gore Vidal but on a subject he probably would never touch.

A smart, easy-to-implement, and unique approach to positive disciplining
Drawing on her highly successful methods developed in her private practice, Dr. Cristine Chandler lays out clear, step-by-step instructions to help parents foster good behavior in their children based on the positive premise: that children behave well when they understand clearly what is expected of them.
Most discipline problems occur when parents are inconsistent about what they expect. Four Weeks to a Better-Behaved Child shows parents how to implement the "4Cs" of discipline in their daily practice: use clear, consistent, contingent consequences. Moreover, in this concise, straightforward book, Dr. Chandler challenges several commonly used approaches to discipline and provides alternatives. She shows parents:
- Why punishment is often the least effective way to discipline children
- Why anger never works
- Why "time-out" works only sometimes--and what to do instead
- How to use consequences to encourage--and get--good behavior

Good for older children.......2006-03-14
I thought this book had really good ideas for keeping your child happy and well behaved. Although it states ages 2-10, it seemed like this book was geared more toward older kids age 4-10. My son is only 2 years old and didn't fit alot of the solutions that were offered. There was one idea I did follow that has definitely worked! Other than that I'll have to wait until he's older to really use the information given. I will definitely refer back to this book again when the time comes!
Simple and good methods.......2006-02-27
The book helped me to set straight the expectations I have of my child. Sometimes I did forget that he is what he is, a 3 year old.
I learned that a lot of work can be done on my behavior, my patience. It makes me feeling better too.
First I didn't like the thought about the Marble system, but as more I read about, it makes sence. I didn't try it yet, but I started to introduce him to the cool down. It helps everyone to stay or get calm.
The reading was really fast and it was easy to understand.
Sensible and straight forward.......2004-08-24
If you calmly read this book without judging your child or yourself, then write down on your daily calendar a reminder to implement this author's ideas, you will find success. The theory is sensible and delivered in a straight forward message. You cannot lose.
Techniques that Work!.......2004-07-21
As the mother of four-year-old twin boys, this book was really helpful to me. I was very frustrated by how often I found myself yelling at my children, not to mention upset by how often they yelled back at me! This book offered an alternative to all that anger, and helped my to change the way I interact with my kids. The book explains four basic concepts for disciplining children--and how to apply them in the real world. In some of her examples, I could swear she was in my living room, describing my family; it was very real, and therefore very helpful. I also appreciated that the book was to the point, and did not go on and on. I don't have a lot of time to read about parenting, I'm too busy doing it. And this book was very valuable in terms of giving me more ways to be a better parent.
Four Weeks to a Better-Behaved Child.......2004-06-04
I found the book easy to read, interesting and most importantly full of useful suggestions. The examples are especially good in relating the philosophical discussion to the real world.
The good news is that her ideas work !
It's great to find a couple of simple rules which change a difficult if not impossible situation around so quickly.
Everybody seems to win here.

One of my favorite books on bread baking!.......2007-05-12
Love this book! The photos are wonderful, the recipes are delicious. They are all artisanal loaves that taste like they come from village bakeries around the world. In fact Dan selects countries throughout Europe and does a profile on the bakery, with beautiful photos - it's like stepping back to the old world. From one of the best bakers in England, and an amazing photographer comes a very beautiful and useful bread baking book. I own about 15 bread books and this is one I pull out again and again for those great artisanal loaves!
Amazing book.......2005-09-27
The book is amazing! It is like to celebrate bread making! And the result is delicious!
Real easy sourdough.......2005-06-01
I've been baking my own bread for over 20 years & have used everything; cuisinart, kitchenaid, bread machine & keading till I drop. Lepard's mininal, intermittent kneading beats them all, hands down AND makes the best bread. Moreover, he tells you how to raise a starter that doesn't involve wasting pounds and pounds of flour or finding a vineyard with organic, unsulfured grapes. The recipes are secondary. This is a gem of a book.

Book Description
The oceans of the Jurassic world were filled with nightmarish creatures. Plesiosaurs, long-necked reptiles measuring up to twenty-five feet long, ate fish -- and each other. The 40-foot-long Kronosaurus and the 45-foot-long Liopleurodon were ferocious predators with razor-sharp teeth. They ate anything they could catch.
Alongside these megapredators swam Hybodus, whose descendants include the great white sharks of today. Hybodus was not the largest hunter in the Jurassic seas, but it was fearless. Hybodus would attack anything.
This is the story of a female Hybodus and her struggle to survive. She must find a way to keep from being eaten, even as she hunts for food herself. She must fight off a Liopleurodon that attempts to take over her hunting grounds. And she must find a way to keep herself, and her unborn baby, safe in a place where even the deadliest of hunters can become meals for other predators. Discover how she responds to the challenges -- and survives.

A good story, great pictures.......2006-10-16
While we agree that the book is violent and not for everyone, if you have one of those kids that is fascinated by all of nature, including struggle and violence, and not just fuzzy bunnies, this is a good read. And while it is true that it's hard to believe that a 10-foot shark could down an 25m liopleuradon, well, everyone loves a good David-and-Goliath story. Plus, I sure see a lot more sharks today than liopleuradons...score 1 ancient fish! :)
this book is terrible for young kids.......2005-12-14
Gruesome, violent pictures and text. Definitely would not recommend it for the younger set (under 8?) Also, the quality of the information is subpar...does the author really know anything about these animals from long ago? Unlikely.
Ultra super duper killing machine!.......2005-02-15
Silly book! Having a seven foot shark kill an Elasmasaurus is rather improbable, but then she kills an eighty foot Liopleurodon (actually she cripples it and the other predators rip it to pieces). Note the approximate mass for each of these animals would be shark 500lbs, Liopleurodon 60 tons. My kitty dragged down a bull moose the other day also. This is an interesting subject and the art is pretty good, but the story line is very poor.

Put this in your collection.......2003-02-02
Jurassic Fishes is an apt title because most of the covered fish or their immediate ancestors were residents of the periods of the dinosaurs. This book will appeal to aquarists interested in the primitive fish, most notably the Polypterus, Arrowana, Knifes, and oddballs like the African Butterfly. It's also not a bad volume for the evolutionary biologist with a casual interest in fish. You won't find phylogentic trees or cladograms here, but an overview of the evolution and geographical distribution of ancient fish - particularly those of African origin.
Of course, like all the TFH books, the pictures are excellent and printed with their special glossy method that makes the pages stick together, but is well worth the effort once you pry them apart! The "glossiness" of TFH books often accompanies a banal text or downright misinformative writing. That is NOT the case here. These guys know their stuff and present it in an intelligent way. This will be a respected volume in your natural history collection.
On "Jurassic Fishes" by H. Kodera, et al........2002-07-21
An excellent resource and reference tome for keepers of many species of primitive fishes, with excellent photography throughout. I keep and raise many specimens of Polypteridae and knife fish, and would not be without this volume in my library....it is the essential cornerstone of any reference collection on primitive fishes.
Excellent book on aquarium "oddballs"........2000-06-08
This is a definite must buy for lovers of aquarium oddballs. There is also a section on the freshwater stingray. The name of the book is of course misleading as it is neither about fossils nor even the evolution of fishes. The only relevance of such a title is the fact that some of the featured species such as the birchir and the lungfish are two of the most ancient group of living fishes.
A plethora of hard to find info........1999-12-10
After months of looking for information on the genus Polypterus I chanced upon this book. It contains more data than all the other books I had read combined (and there were over ten). And the pictures! Absolutely stunning! A must buy for anyone who is interested in the older and more interesting species of aquarium fish.
A great book for those intrigued by large freshwater fish.......1999-06-24
This book is great for those interested in the unusual and rare. Each fish is well documented with stunning photographs and proper maintanence tips for the hobbyist wishing to keep any of the given species. With many fascinating facts included, this book shows how amazing these animals really are.

Description:
Oxygen isotopes can be used to reconstruct the palaeoenvironmental conditions in which vertebrates lived, and thereby give an indication of their ecology. This has been done for faunas from the famous Late Jurassic lithographic limestones of Western Europe. Oxygen isotope compositions of phosphate from apatite were measured in aquatic or semiaquatic vertebrate remains (fish, turtles, and crocodilians) deposited in these protected coastal marine environments. The unknown water composition in the oxygen isotope fractionation equations between phosphate and water was solved for turtles by assuming that modern relationship between environmental water and turtle bone isotope compositions applies to the past. The results show that: (1) coastal marine waters were thermally homogenous at the regional scale of Western Europe; (2) oxygen isotope data discriminate between coastal marine and freshwater to brackish water inhabitants; (3) the plesiochelyid turtles were coastal marine inhabitants-their @d^1^8O values allow the calculation of the oxygen isotope compositions of marine waters, thus refining the estimate of water temperatures by combining @d^1^8O values from fish; and (4) the marine isotopic signature and the cranial anatomy of plesiochelyid turtles lead us to propose that they had a salt-excreting system (i.e., the fundamental physiological feature that controls osmoregulation in the marine environment). These Late Jurassic turtles are proposed to be the first known marine turtles, several tens of million years before the chelonioids or 'sea turtles.'

purchase review.......2007-09-03
I bought this book out of curiosity. Upon reading this book, I am not impressed. I am not an engineer, nor do I claim to be, But in my opinion,
there is no information in here that anyone who even knows what a suppressor is does not know already. I am dissapointed with my purchase and wished I bought other literature.
Simple designs that work.......2006-07-07
The designs in this book are simple, lo-tech, and surprisingly effective. Being a good do-it-yourselfer helps, as does a good assortment of hand tools (which if you don't own, you will end up owning by the time you finish the book). Some of the designs are open to improvement, and adaptation to other circumstances. Additionally, they can be adapted to what supplies you have available. It makes for interesting trips to hardware stores.
Remember safety first. Start with wide tolerances, which reduce effectiveness but increase safety. As your skills become more precise, reduce the tolerances. Oh, and of course, don't do any of it, because it is illegal.
Do a search.........2005-09-29
You will be better off doing a search on the net. I will say this positive about the book...it proves anything can actually get published. If you spend a couple of hours on the net you could write a better book...
Elegant Designs.......2005-04-06
The only criticism I have of this little book is that it was way too short; I wanted to see more of these elegant designs.
My favorite was the silencer for the Maverick 88 bullpup shotgun firing 575 grain subsonic slugs. With some aluminum tubing, sturdy PVC pipe and fittings, steel wool, and a clamp, the author puts together a heavy-duty silencer capable of withstanding and suppressing the blast of a 12-gauge shotgun. Although an easily-constructed "disposable" silencer, it has the lines of a professional model that was designed for that particular weapon.
I don't know what the other reviewer's problem is; anyone who knows anything about silencers can attest the soundness of these designs. (Maybe it's George Hayduke trying to disparage his competition!)
The books title aptly applies to the contents.......2004-04-20
This book is mostly useless to anyone who has any knowledge of physics, or even has a hammer and hacksaw. The suppressor designs included are garbage, and some are even made from materials a person could find in the trash. It is not worth the money to buy this book, unless you want something to make you feel more secure about your own intelligence.

People are unique in more ways than we can see. Stomachs and other internal organs come in many different shapes and sizes. Digestive juices, too, can vary dramatically from one person to another. Thus, according to author William Linz Wolcott, founder of Healthexcel, a company that provides metabolic typing for individuals, it stands to reason that different foods have very different effects on different people.
Wolcott believes that tailoring your diet to your body's particular quirks--metabolic typing--will improve digestion, circulation, immunity, energy, and mood. To determine your type, he has you take a 65-question test (the questions range from nose moisture to how you feel about potatoes), then place yourself in one of three categories: protein type, carbo type, or mixed type.
The protein type is instructed to eat a diet that's 40 percent protein, 30 percent fat, and 30 percent carbs. The carbo type gets 60 percent carbs, 25 percent protein, and 15 percent fat. And the mixed type should consume 50 percent carbs, 30 percent protein, and 20 percent fat, although this type has to play with the ratios a little more to find the optimal mix.
Although The Metabolic Typing Diet is based on information from researchers the majority of the public will never have heard of, Wolcott makes a strong case that it's all based on common sense: most of the dietary problems we have come from ignoring the foods that make us feel satisfied and energetic in favor of ones that we feel we're supposed to eat, or foods that we eat in desperation because our last meal left us hungry or lethargic. If we just eat the foods that make us feel right, Wolcott argues, we'll never feel like things have gone horribly wrong. --Lou Schuler
Book Description
Are you overweight?
Do you experience low energy, digestive problems, allergies, low blood sugar, poor concentration, mood swings, hormonal imbalances, high blood pressure, or other chronic ailments? Have you tried lots of diets with limited success? Are you confused by all the contradictory advice offered by nutrition experts? If your answer is yes to any of these questions, here's what you need to know: the real secret of health and fitness is customized nutrition.
In
The Metabolic Typing Diet, William L. Wolcott provides, for the first time, a simple, practical method for identifying the particular diet that is tailored to your body chemistry, and yours alone. You begin by taking an innovative new self-test that enables you to identify your "metabolic type." From there you move on to mastering other quick and easy techniques, which allow you to zero in on the precise foods and combinations of foods--proteins, fats, and carbohydrates--that will enable you to achieve your ideal weight and robust good health.
For hereditary reasons, people are all very different from one another in outward appearance. Similarly, we are all unique on a biochemical or metabolic level--that is, in the way our bodies process foods and utilize nutrients. In the same way that certain cars are designed to run on gasoline while others require diesel fuel, each individual's body has its own "engine of metabolism" that requires a specific kind of "body fuel" to function efficiently. And this simple fact is the underlying principle of metabolic typing.
With
The Metabolic Typing Diet, William L. Wolcott has written the definitive book on metabolic typing, widely regarded as the "next wave" in nutritional science. While other, one-dimensional dietary approaches attempt to differentiate people on the basis of only a single, fixed variable, such as blood type or body type, the metabolic typing diet offers a comprehensive, dynamic system that encompasses a wide range of biochemical variables and provides you with the means to pinpoint your personal dietary needs with enormous precision.
In
The Metabolic Typing Diet, William L. Wolcott presents, in remarkably simple and user-friendly terms, an extremely advanced approach to customized nutrition, and provides all of the tools you require in order to tailor your diet to your own special needs.
Genetically, each individual is unique in the way he or she utilizes nutrients on a metabolic level, and YOUR BODY, YOUR DIET is the first and only book to offer men and women a revolutionary, scientifically proven system for discovering their metabolic type and, therefore, determining their own nutritional needs. Some people thrive on high protein diets that include meat and dairy products; others are built for high carbohydrate diets based mainly on vegetables and grains. By taking the self-test that William Wolcott has developed and tested over the course of many years, the reader will learn how his or her own internal "engine of metabolism" converts foods and nutrients into the "body fuel" that is necessary for all life-sustaining activities. And by following the proper diet, he or she will not only achieve an ideal weight, but will also be healthier, more energetic, and mentally alert.
YOUR BODY, YOUR DIET provides comprehensive food lists and other dietary instructions, including the proper ratios of protein, carbohydrates, and fat for each metabolic type. Based on a proprietary system available to no one but William Wolcott, this is, indeed, the very last "diet" anyone will ever need! -->

FEW SURVIVED INDEED!.......2005-08-13
If you have any interest in submarine accidents and rescues, this is the book for you. We learn of accidents from the earliest experiments centuries ago to the 1990's, and from little known mishaps to famous disasters like the Thresher and Thetis. Gray explains how these accidents happened and how technologies, like the Momsen lung and diving bells, have saved lives in seemingly hopeless situations.
Gray says in his introduction that he wrote the book in part to come to terms with his fears of such horrid situations and indeed the terror of being trapped 150 feet under water in a dark sub is easy to understand. Sometimes it is much less simple to see just how a few managed to escape after all! One may feel the need to study hydro-dynamics and physics to truly comprehend how rescue is possible.
I think Gray spends too much time trying to describe every accident on record. This approach adds little to the book and gives it a choppy quality. He should have concentrated on the major disasters and rescues and left the others to a listing in the Appendix at the end. But the book suffers little for this. Also, readers should be aware that an updated version is out that covers the Kursk disaster of 2000.

Small-town boy witnesses the horrors of war.......2003-02-10
Small-town boy, Bob Dowding, of Seward, Nebraska, spent 3 1/2 years as a Japanese POW. An eyewitness to the horrors of war, Dowding maintained a strong faith that he might return home someday. A sobering, but uplifting account of an everyman overcoming all odds and obstacles put before him. I had the chance to hear Mr. Dowding speak, and he brings the war experience home to you like no documentary can.
