Book Description
T-4 Bob Shepard worked twelve hour shifts wading through mud, blood and disease so that many hundreds of American servicemen could return home. The story of Shepard's stint with the 1st Field Hospital is a unique history of a medical unit in the Southwest Pacific theater.
Book Description
For as long as anyone can remember, a man named Luca Turin has had an uncanny relationship with smells. He has been compared to the hero of Patrick Süskind’s novel
Perfume, but his story is in fact stranger, because it is true. It concerns how he made use of his powerful gifts to solve one of the last great mysteries of the human body: how our noses work.
Luca Turin can distinguish the components of just about any smell, from the world’s most refined perfumes to the air in a subway car on the Paris metro. A distinguished scientist, he once worked in an unrelated field, though he made a hobby of collecting fragrances. But when, as a lark, he published a collection of his reviews of the world’s perfumes, the book hit the small, insular business of perfume makers like a thunderclap. Who is this man Luca Turin, they demanded, and how does he know so much? The closed community of scent creation opened up to Luca Turin, and he discovered a fact that astonished him: no one in this world knew how smell worked. Billions and billions of dollars were spent creating scents in a manner amounting to glorified trial and error.
The solution to the mystery of every other human sense has led to the Nobel Prize, if not vast riches. Why, Luca Turin thought, should smell be any different? So he gave his life to this great puzzle. And in the end, incredibly, it would seem that he solved it. But when enormously powerful interests are threatened and great reputations are at stake, Luca Turin learned, nothing is quite what it seems.
Acclaimed writer Chandler Burr has spent four years chronicling Luca Turin’s quest to unravel the mystery of how our sense of smell works. What has emerged is an enthralling, magical book that changes the way we think about that area between our mouth and our eyes, and its profound, secret hold on our lives.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing.......2007-06-15
Burr is simply amazing. One of the top five books I've ever read. The story of Luca Turin's "Theory of Smell." Who would have known in this day and age the world had no idea how the nose worked? Turin's road to discovery and the obstacles set before him by the closed-minded academia. Burr does an amazing job of setting the stage honing in on Turin's eccentricities. A great insight into perfume, perfume makers, and a brief history of perfume. I have given over fifty copies to friends and customers. Even today most ENT doctors have not read the [..]the nose.
Convincing But One Sided and With No Resolution.......2007-05-10
This is an interesting book until it occurs to you that his claim has not been proved. This is annoying because there is indeed no presentation of the opposing side and so without any semblance of balance we cannot really know if this is valid or not.
Thought Provoking.......2006-10-26
Seldom do we we see a book, which deals with a scientific matter, inspire such a range of thoughtful responses from a wide variety of well-informed, well-educated people, scientific and non-scientific alike.
Frankly, I've enjoyed reading the words of my fellow reviewers almost as much as I enjoyed reading The Emperor of Scent. Kudos to Chandler Burr. Look for his byline in the pages of the New York Times, where he toils as a scent critic. Really. It's riveting reading in the world of perfume. So is The Emperor of Scent. And I'm no scientist.
A brilliant man brilliantly described...too bad the journalism has a gaping hole........2006-09-14
I really wish I could give this book 5 stars. The subject matter is fascinating, the science writing is brilliant [among the best I've read, and I read thousands of pages of science journalism every year], the main character is, at least on the page, a tornado of charisma and curiosity... But the story is that this intellectual dervish, Luca Turin, the titular Emperor of Scent, is a sort of Gallileo, whose patently true theory of scent [we are hand-led to believe] is spurned by the Orthodox Establishment who stand to lose money and reputation... but the establishment theory is never really examined. This is journalism with a gaping hole in it: the rebuttal never comes.
This is by no means Chandler Burr's fault. As he describes it, Turin's theory is so revolutionary and so inconvenient that he can't even get the Old Guard to respond or rebutt. He was stonewalled. I tend to believe Burr's account, familiar as I am with his writing for the Atlantic, etc., but it is a flaw in the story nonetheless.
That said, this book is totally worth your time. The writing is hyper-lucid and vivacious. Sparkling, really. Burr's intelligence brings Turin to life, and leaves us a character worthy of great fiction. How he does this with such transparent and seemingly effortless prose I have no idea. Outstanding writing. And, at least within the limitations he could not avoid, Burr has done some top-notch journalism. If that rebuttal were included, I think we'd have a classic of science journalism right up there with John McPhee and David Quamen.
Great fun, and highly informative. I look forward to the conclusion of the great smell debate!
Good Science? Good Literature? .......2006-06-19
The book and its protagonist come off as "bitchy", "effeminate" and "French." On a good day, these qualities might be interesting and even charming in a drop-dead sexy woman who is undressing in front of you. That's especially true if you have the option of shipping her back to Europe the next day, forever. But these same qualities are a bit too much in an olfactory scientist who may (or may not) be on the verge of cracking the sensory-neural code for smell. Frankly, I wasn't able to make it through the entire book given the grandiose portrait that emerged. This story will be MUCH more interesting if it turns out that Luca Turin's fascinating theory and brilliant predictive model end up being correct. If that's the case, then I'll be the first to suggest that we wash him in a glorious spicy and sweet scented bath of vindication and validation. (Somebody else needs to hold the sponge).
Having said all this, I have the strong sense that Luca Turin is an intuitive and creative genius, with the overflowing passion and insight needed to make unique breakthroughs. It would appear that he's using some kind of synaesthetic sense to perceive and describe the olfactory sense. In a world filled with competent but unimaginative nirasas, people like Turin are worth their weight in gold. They forge forward filled with passion, conviction, dedication and vision (or in this case smell). They accumulate enormous amounts of information but are unconstrained by the shackles of convention. The biggest problem for these people occurs when they return to earth with their alien messages. They find a mass of people in a cave, watching shadows, and who do not have a schema for new information. In Turin's case, he's found brilliant metaphors to describe his olfactory dream world, but he is still struggling to present his Martian understanding in a language and style that is acceptable to scientists. He's trying to translate what he knows based on experience into validated, empirical, accepted scientific truth. It is a long road and at times he's a lousy driver. Trying to run Nobel Laureates and other great olfactory scientists off the road is akin to road rage. Good luck.
I think its great that so few people believe Turin's theory and that evidence is mounting against it. I say this now because I'm betting that his theory is correct in general form, and that science will ultimately validate a theory that looks like his. So I'm jumping on the bandwagon now, while it is still is fairly empty. Maybe that means something. I'm no expert on the chemo-senses, and my understanding of smell is highly limited. But I do know something about sensory systems in general, and about frequency-like coding in vision, hearing and touch. In the visual system, frequency-like coding channels are everywhere... in the cones that are differentially sensitive for wavelength, and in the higher visual areas that are selective for spatial, temporal and other frequencies. The ear and it's cochlea are clearly frequency analyzers, with "critical bands" and tonotopic variation represented clearly in the brain. The skin contains frequency selective mechanisms, too, as made implicit in Bolanowski's classic model. As our understanding of haptic perception improves, I'll bet that we'll find cortical detectors selective for tactile spatial and temporal frequencies. Whatever. My key point is that other sensory systems reek of just the kind of processing that Turin advocates for smell.
I was interested in this book because I was interested in his scientific theory more than anything else. I learned about it in the new sensation and perception text by Wolfe et al. (2005). I found plenty here to help me understand it (though there's a reason I'm not a chemist). I'm finding that there are better ways to become familiar with Turin's scientific theory than purchasing this book. Turin's Flexitral website provides the excellent references, including many available for download. The J. Theoretical Biology (2002) seems to be the most accessible, but I have yet to see the more recent papers, including a 2005 book chapter. According to the website, Turin has published, or is about to publish, a book on the subject.
One more thing--The ultimate tests of Turin's model and any decent model of olfactory processing will be conducted by neuroscientists and psychophysicists, not a bunch of chemists. (See, e.g., the new book by Wilson & Stevenson). And the tests will involve olfactory detection as opposed to olfactory discrimination and odor prediction. I'll even suggest the technique. Measure olfactory threshold functions for a bunch of different chemical odorants. Measure these thresholds in a bunch of different individuals, creating a big data base of individual differences. Then use the individual differences to figure out what goes with what. If Turin is right, factors will emerge that conform to his vibrational theory. Simple. See my published papers on individual differences in visual processing.
I may return to finish this book at a later date. That's all for now.

"A tale...of jealousy, calcified minds, vested interests.".......2005-09-21
Telling the story of Luca Turin, a French scientist who, in the mid-1990s, developed a revolutionary new theory about how we smell, Chandler Burr focuses on the evolution of the theory and why it has not led to a Nobel Prize. Turin, a controversial researcher, posited (and believes he proved) that scent is not determined by the body's ability to recognize the shape of molecules, the accepted explanation of smell. Instead, he believes that vibrations of electrons are recognized by a kind of "spectroscope" in our noses--that atoms with the same vibrations have the same smell even when they come from different elements.
Burr details Turin's experiments and his successful (he believes) searches for proof through the late 1990s. But he also describes Turin's unsuccessful attempts to be published in prestigious scientific magazines, his battles royal with other researchers, some of whom have rejected his ideas without reading his papers, and his disappointments with the "Big Boys," the world's seven biggest makers of perfumes, who would benefit directly if Turin were correct. Ultimately, Burr concludes that the scientific community and its attitudes toward Turin reflect their "scientific corruption, corruption in the most mundane and systemic [sense]."
For whatever reasons, Burr is unsuccessful in getting opposing scientists to discuss Turin's vibration theory in relation to their belief in a molecule's shape as a determinant of smell, and he ultimately presents a book that is biased in favor of Turin's work. By the end of the book, Burr has clearly abandoned any sense of impartiality and become a supporter of Turin. He inserts an Author's Note three-quarters of the way into the book to justify his inability to present an alternative viewpoint, concluding that scientific rejection of Turin's theory is the result of "vested self-interest and bad science."
Turin is clearly a difficult man, however, and his attitudes, reflected in humorous and sarcastic comments about other scientists and their ideas, may well have contributed to his lack of acceptance. Though one of his supporters praises him for being the first person to apply quantum mechanics to a physical problem, he also indicates that Turin's biggest flaw is his impatience. (In fact, Turin has already abandoned this work, moving on to a new project studying energy storage in cells.) Fascinating, though complex in its discussions of biology, chemistry, and physics, the book is also fun to read--the story of a maverick who had a great idea which no one takes seriously, at least not yet. Get healthy with Chiropractic.......2007-03-25
The body is amazing in its ability to heal!! Dr. Epstein is ahead of the masses in his understanding of health and healing. With chiropractic, you can regain and maintain a high level of health!!
Be Aware if you try this .......2007-01-14
In theory a lot of this sounds as if it would be helpful. Reality can be something very different. The following is my personal experience and opinion of NSA. Please be aware this is not a wonderful healing tool for everyone. I started out thinking it is helpful and then ended up in a horrible state of depression and body agitation along with now over 3 months of insomnia that none of the breathing exercises will help. I have tried 2 different practitioners and find myself getting more and more manipulated into trying to stick with it as this is all part of some great process that will help you in the end. Any pain or difficulty is blamed on my "resistance". My body is constantly being stretched in NSA and then I have swelling and intense pain. If I say anything they tell me it is because I am not feeling my feelings and I need to feel more. I am not a person who is unaware of what I am feeling and where I feel it in my body so this reasoning gets ridiculous. Then in level 2 any pain depression insomnia etc that has occurred gets amplified. You can trust that happens and they try to have you breath through it. I did the breathing religiously it never helped me. They are messing with your Central Nervous System and they do not have as much research and validation as to what is actually happening to the brain and body as they try to make it sound. Trying to get information has been impossible and trying to contact NSA headquarters on their information line is useless. I have written and called numerous times trying to get information and get nothing back. The practitioners I have gone to are anything but what I would consider "higher brain" compassionate people. One lets her child play with video games that kill people in gory ways After seeing this 6 or 7 times red flags started going off. (This practitioner herself is a recipient of NSA for 10 years or more.). I switched practitioners and am getting no where but lots of guilt about how the universe will find another way to get my attention like maybe a death of a loved one ect. if I don't follow through. I tried this practitioner for 3 months now and after hearing this I really started questioning NSA. She also has been receiving NSA for about 10 years. Personally It seems they have subtle and not so subtle ways of continually manipulating people into keep coming when they are obviously causing things within your Central Nervous System that are anything but healing. Another great scheme is to have you come in more rather then less when there is swelling or any other concerns such as depression insomnia etc. This has only intensified all of the above for me. Another manipulation to watch for is their system of trying to re-label everything into a healing opportunity. There is a great fondness for causing struggle and frustration and pain. Also the financial cost of going 2-3 times a week is enormous. And if you buy into all the manipulations of how to be a more compassionate "Higher Brain" functioning human you never stop going. After you finish going 3 times a week at lower levels -You go at least 2-3 times a month depending on how committed you "truly" are to being a more evolved spiritual enlightened human. There also seems to be a cult like atmosphere around Donny Epstein the founder. Whenever I questioned anything there was a stiff taken back approach given to me and I was told I was so wrong and "lower brain" fight or flight thinking of me to not completely adore his work. Then there is the pushing about how much research has been done. However, that research has been questioned as to its validity. For one thing, they may have some studies and research but they definitely do not know enough about how NSA affects a large enough segment of the human population in our Central Nervous System and as I understand it there are other problems with the research and how valid it actually is. All I can say is be aware and watch out for all the mind and spiritual manipulation that goes on. They also claim it is not specific to any spiritual belief. I have not found that to be true. The whole philosophy behind this has an agenda to it. It definitely has a harshness to it that is not anything like the spiritual peace that one can truly learn from. If you are into harshness and looking on the dark side of things and yourself and dwelling there to "learn" then this is the place for you. If you like getting periodic highs and peace from release of tension that NSA builds up in your body and mind then you are in the right place. If you like being manipulated, led and losing your own sense of power and capabilities for inner healing, then you are in the right place. I was told that I needed to lose all sense of creativity and joy in my life that insomnia, depression and pain are what I need to heal. I have to wonder if this is a way to get people to take on their belief system-Anyone that isn't getting sleep and is in pain is ripe for not being able to think clear and take things as truth that they normally would not. The practitioners insisted that my body put me in these states of continued depression insomnia, and pain because that is what I need. Personally I found none of NSA to be healing except for an induced fleeting sense of peace it has been nothing but a nightmare. Also when I thought about leaving I was warned how my body will not tolerate me quitting and it will feel good at first but then get worse. Of course they tell you none of this when they start you off on just feeling some peace in level 1. All I can say is be very aware.
Excellent Self-Help Book.......2006-11-07
Dr. Epstein's book is very insightful and easy to read. It has proven to be invaluable to me at this point in my life.
Network care heals the spinal nervous system .......2005-05-11
I was skeptical when a friend introduced me to network chiropractic. Since my insurance company covered the full treatment sessions I decided to give it a go. The surprise was worth it. Network chiropractice heals the spine and the emotional nervous system. So not only are the problem areas adjusted but the tension held in the nervous sytem is released. This is not cracking the joints but working with pressure points to align the body naturally and gently into place. If you get coverage for chiropractice ... give this a go.
Genius can be hard to understand..........2004-10-25
I have completed over 100 sessions of Donald Epsteins "Network Chiropractic" or "Network Spinal Analysis" - and I can vouch for it. I believe it is unique, as it states, and not only is a process whereby you can overcome your pain, discomfort, and tension (defence physiology), but grow as a person overall. The benefits are without a ceiling to the "bodymind", and it just keeps getting better. It doen't even compare for example to the theory so highly touted and created by John Sarno (also reviewed) which is essentially learning how to control your pain. Network unwinds your spinal cord -- where all your tension resides, which is also said to be the subconscious mind.
THIS BOOK however is ABSTRACT, and if you are prone to getting stuck at all, you will. (I have asked several people who have read it, and they all have this same story.) It describes a process of 12 Stages on your healing journey, and you are in one of them now. If you can find it, great, otherwise, it really becomes confusing, and make no mistake, it is hard to read anyway. I quit after 90 pages, and I never went back -- it was that difficult. HOWEVER, it's ultimate "saving grace" is that there are exercises in it that are invaluable. If you are suffering in your life with pain or whatever, go to the first chapter and follow these diagrams and instructions. Photocopy these pages only, if you don't wish to read the book. They only take a couple of minutes. It is possible to get instant and total relief, especially once you have practiced them awhile. At first -- they can be hard to do and create more pain! Don't get discouraged.

Tea-lightful Book!.......2006-08-16
Mary Engelbreit infuses her whimsical style into everything she creates, and this book is a prime example. It is beautifully illustrated and photographed. There's a little bit of everything on the subject of tea here, like tea history, tea decor, and tea party ideas. It's bound to put a smile on your face.
Tea Lovers Delight.......2000-07-13
This is one of those special books you come across once in a long while. Mary Englebreit is well loved the world over and this book contains many of her wonderful drawings plus photos of some of her own tea collectibles. This is a delightful little book - one to treasure. If you love tea I think you'll love this book. If you love ME I guarantee you love it! And if you haven't met Mary and her works yet, you are in for a real treat!
Colorfully illustrated compendium of tea facts & recipes.......1998-05-07
In Mary's exuberant artistic style, the theme of serving tea and collecting "tea stuff" is treated with joy. A lifetime collector who enjoys the acoutrements of tea as much as the tea party itself, the author/illustrator includes photos from her own collection and favorite recipes. I've recently added this volume to my tea book collection and enjoyed reading it.
Product Description
Superbly illustrated and meticulously researched, this book is the first reference for both general readers and specialists of everything that is known about the most beautiful, agile, fast, fascinating, and mysterious of all sharks: the mako shark. The elegant shape, the curved prominent teeth and the tail shaped like a halfmoon make them unmistakable. Mako sharks, shortfin mako and longfin mako, belong to the family Lamnidae, which also includes the great white shark. Makos have very ancient origins, appearing in prehistoric oceans between 40 and 60 million years ago. The shortfin mako can be considered among the fastest of all sharks, since it can reach speeds of 35-56 km/h and can jump out of the water to more than 6 meters in height. Makos have the speed and agility to catch fast swimming prey, such as tunas, swordfishes and dolphins. Some makos have been found with a swordfish bill driven into their body after fighting with prey. Makos are considered dangerous animals: attacks on divers, swimmers and boats are known, but are rare because these predators prefer offshore waters. The shortfin mako is fished all over the world and is prized for the high quality of its meat. Moreover its fighting temper makes it one of the most sought-after prey by the sport-fishermen. The text is supported by many exquisite and rare pictures, including 40 color photographs and 15 black and white drawings.

Great fun and rare paper model book.......2007-08-24
These four working models are simple to make and a lot of fun to operate. The mechanisms are cams and levers and the resulting models are easy to use and, especially in the case of the flying fish, have unexpectedly fluid movement. One small complaint I have (and the reason for the dropped rating) is that the pre-printed colors are very bright and not always appropriate to the model.

Autopsy reports show that about half the U.S. population over the age of 50 has colon polyps. Since about 95 percent of colon and rectal cancers grow from these polyps, it stands to reason that most Americans should worry at least a little bit about this disease. The bulk of this book is for people who've already been diagnosed with colon cancer, but some sections give advice to family members of cancer patients. The entire volume serves as an argument to get regular physical examinations.
Book Description
From initial diagnosis to the latest treatments, this encouraging, authoritative guide explores everything you need to know to make informed choices about colon cancer care. You'll learn how colon cancer develops, what to expect from diagnostic tests, and how to choose the best doctors and treatment centers. Here's invaluable information on:
- Which treatment options work best for different phases of colon cancer
- How to cope with physical and emotional side effects
- Tips on resuming a healthy lifestyle
- Related disorders such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis

Are you a cancer specialist when a loved one is diagnosed?.......2003-12-14
When my father was diagnosed with colon cancer, and all the other issues associated with it, everyone's lack of basic knowledge was amazing. Most of my siblings and I are college educated, 2 sisters are even nurses. Yet we all had a lot of misconceptions about even the simplest things. When we tried to wade through the piles of information we found everywhere, things became even more confusing. Then I found this book. It was like a primer on colon cancer. The book lays out all of the basic information in a logical, understandable way that helped all of us understand the disease. My sisters, the nurses, thought it was a little simple, and my father was still baffled by all the detail. But, it gave us the tools as a family to understand and deal with the real issues. We were less scared about somethings and more focused on what mattered. The biggest help was just being able to understand the risks and goals of the treatment options we were presented. This book was an invaluable tool for our colon cancer survival story. And if you are reading this because you or a loved one are facing colon cancer, have hope and I wish you all the best.
Superficial, for the Less Informed.......2000-06-22
Book lacks the detail I was looking for. Details of the cancer's prognosis and what to expect on the path towards the demise is what I was looking for. Information is helpful for person who has no knowledge of colorectal cancer. I was disappointed.
What to do if you get Colon Cancer: A Specialist's Guide.......1999-12-28
Very helpful, straightforward guide to help one understand a potentially terrifying subject. Mainly, it helped me think of what I should be asking my doctors, and to understand both their answers and my options. A calming, useful resource. Highly recommend it to patients & family.
An absolute must for anyone dealing with colon cancer!.......1998-11-30
This book presents an essential overview of all aspects of colon cancer, from diagnosis to dealing with life after surgery and chemotherapy. It is well organized, and concepts are clearly explained for a general audience. I highly recommend it, not only for someone dealing with colon cancer personally, but for friends and family members as well. This is the most comprehensive and current book on the topic of colon cancer that I've been able to find!

Customer Reviews:
a truly great book.......2001-03-02
i am 16 years old and read this book for the first time last year. i truly enjoyed reading the book. i am not into books which have a difficult plot or a lot of long words but anyone can undersatnd this book. i cant imagine what the boy would have went through and had to keep on reminding myself that this actually happened. i definitely do not think that this book is given the credit in which it is worth. reading the book makes you realise what a good life you have compared to what the boy went through. so go out and read the book now. p.s. have a box of tissues ready!!!
innocence.......2000-03-15
The story is beyond an ugliness of human nature. How any one dare to challenge "How about Hiroshima ?" The boy is above all these and almost religius. The Japanese Emperor and the Governmentaologized for the undue cruelities inflickted on the internees, but the most interesting thing is that they did no do so to their own people who were victims themselves under the Japanese Military systems.
an excellent read--I recommend it.......1999-11-02
A decided to read this book after I heard the news that a movie based on it staring Jane Seymour will be filming next year. I read it only to better understand the movie, and was extremely surprised at what an excellent story I found it to be. It is told from the perspective of a little boy, about his struggles and triumphs, and the little things that help him cope with life in a concentration camp run by Japanese. If you think this is your typical "WW II survivor story", guess again. As I was reading I forgot the book was about a concentration camp. It became the story of a ordinary boy and his mother, and their day-to-day life amidst a horrific background. The harsh reality is it is a true story. I hope the movie does it justice. This book is extremely under-rated. It is up to par with Oprah's book club books. Please read it, and I think you will be surprised. If anyone knows how I can contact the author, please let me know.
