Lillian Hellman's memoirs are as notable for what they omit as for what they reveal. In An Unfinished Woman (1969), she notes that, although she kept an extensive diary of her Moscow trip in the winter of 1944-45, "No where is there a record of . . . how close I felt then and now to a State Department career man whose future, seven or eight years later, went down the drain for no reason except the brutal cowardice of his colleagues under the hammering of Joe McCarthy."

The State Department career man is John Fremont Melby, principal author of the government's China White Paper of 1949. Hellman and Melby met in Russia, fell in love, talked often of marriage, and, during their separations over the next thirty years, wrote each other voluminously. When Hellman appeared before the House Un-American Activities Committee in the famous confrontation of May 21, 1952, she was anxious to protect not the Hollywood leftists she had known but Melby and Averell Harriman, the former American ambassador to Russia under whose roof she began her affair with Melby.

The Cold War Romance of Lillian Hellman and John Melby is the story of their affair, certainly one of the most intense of Hellman's life. It is also the story of Hellman's role in Melby's seven Loyalty-Security hearings, extending over eighteen months. The transcripts of these hearings, divulged here for the first time, reveal far more about her politics than does her brief appearance before the HUAC. Melby was fired from the State Department in 1953 by John Foster Dulles because of his affair with Hellman and because he would not repudiate her. It was a pure case of "guilt by association."

This is a tale of politics, personalities, and passion. Based on Hellman's and Melby's letters, FBI and Passport Office files, transcripts of Melby's hearings, and the files of Hellman's lawyer, Joseph Rauh, this book establishes that Hellman's association with the Communist party was fleeting. But more importantly, it is a compelling account of a love affair that was aborted and then revived by the Cold War.

More little-known Post-WWII and Cold War History..........1999-02-04

Robert Newman not only leads up to his highly praised history of the Owen Lattimore story and the influence of the "China Lobby" with this account, but gives much denied credit as well to the history of the left which had been censored, denied, and castigated... Included is a little-known quote from Lillian Hellman in her opening remarks to the Waldorf Peace Conference in 1949, which she co-organized. The Waldorf Conference was a credit to the post-WWII anticolonialist peace movement fueled by the activism of the radicalism of the 30s. This social/political/cultural movement included among others Hellman and W.E.B. DuBois, who founded the Peace Information Center in 1950 and circulated the Stockholm Peace Petition at a time when the Soviet Union was allegedly running a "peace offensive" and at a time when anyone who promoted peace or who criticized U.S. policy must therefore be viewed as being an agent of a foreign govt. in the McCarthy hysteria. Not only was anyone associated with those promoting peace at risk of suspicion, but also anyone who showed any independent thinking regarding foreign policy, no matter how extensive the institutional experience (as in Melby's case) or how well-founded the logic. This was the case with John Melby, chief editor of the China White Paper which acknowledged the inevitable failure of the KMT and the subsequent "loss of China." Just as anyone associated with the Waldorf Conference was eventually brought before HUAC and/or blacklisted, so anyone associated with authorship of the China White Paper was subjected to loyalty security board hearings and their careers ruined, but for different cause. The irony of this book is that it illustrates how the relationship of Melby and Hellman resulted in a collision of these two very different worlds of thought, intellectual culture, career, and experience.

Very Helpful.......2007-06-26

This has been the best pregnancy book I have gotten (and I have about 8!). The exercises make sense and while I've only been using it for a few weeks, I can already feel a difference in my lower back. Before getting pregnant, I had minor lower back pain. After doing these exercises, my back already feels better and my abs feel stronger. The exercises are not hard, but you are supposed to do them every day so it can get a little tedious. But I have to think it's worth it. Very practical book.

Better than the other pregnancy fitness books out there!.......2006-04-23

Scientifically reasoned, detailed explanations of the why and how of exercises for strengthening abdominals and pelvic muscles for pregnancy and after. This author clearly has had experience coaching women to do these exercises - I like the instructions of how to avoid common mistakes in these exercises, and also the interesting abdominal exercises (Tupler method) for reducing abdominal diastasis. This book looks like an excellent guide for those who want a specific training program to prepare for pregnancy and a faster recovery.

Maternal Fitness, despite its short length, is denser and more informative than the other pregnancy fitness books out there. It's the only one in my opinion worth buying, because unlike the other books, you can't find the info in this book on the web. FYI, this author also wrote "Lose your mummy tummy", which probably overlaps with the content of this book but may be more up to date...

It really works! The best pregnancy fitness book.......2005-07-05

This book is wonderful for several reasons.

1. Technical knowledge and explanations. The author is an experienced nurse and fitness trainer so she is able to offer detailed explanations of how muscles work, how to train the muscles safely and effectively, and information on how all of this is effected during pregnancy.

2. Safe and confident. I bought this book during my first pregnancy when I was scared to do anything for fear of hurting my daughter. Her explanations and the gentle exercises were just what I needed. Extremely effective and difficult while not making you worry that you are doing something wrong or pushing too hard.

3. It works! In my first pregnancy, I followed this book throughout the first and second trimesters. During the third trimester I wasn't so diligent, but even so I managed the entire 9 months without backache or waddling. When it came time to push, the memory of the exercises helped me use the tranverse muscles correctly even though I was half numb due to the epidural. I pushed my daughter out in only 30 minutes. The doctor said this was amazing for a first timer. I also think it helped assist in a speedy recovery. I gained 30 pounds - so I didn't gain a ton, but still managed to get into my prepregnancy jeans only 2 weeks after my daughter was born. They were tight but squeezing into them still made me feel great!

4. An excellent addenda to pregnancy fitness classes. In my first pregnancy my husband was in graduate school so I couldn't afford classes outside the book. In my second pregnancy now, I go to a pregnancy pilates class 3 times a week. The class helps me be more consistent than just on my own. My instructor follows almost all the principles outlined in Tupler's book and for the couple of things she does "wrong" I can quietly modify them using Tupler's techniques. And this time, being more consistent, I have also eliminated leg cramps and have far more energy in my third trimester. I realize every pregnancy is different, but I really owe a lot of this to exercise.

Anyway, I think it is the best pregnancy fitness book I have seen and it really works. Best of luck!

Bought this book instead of pregnancy yoga books.......2002-09-23

I bought this book during my first trimester instead of the "pregnancy yoga" books I was considering. I'd been doing yoga for several years prior to my pregnancy but felt that my normal classes lacked the additional information I needed about how to effectively use my body during pregnancy and labor and how to apply everything I've learned from yoga to labor.

I was surprised and then grateful to find that many of the exercises in the book are similar to yoga, but Julie Tupler builds on the similarities and takes them a step further, without ever referring to yoga. She helps you understand and prepare for how you will be using your body during labor and gives helpful information about birthing positions, episiotomies, breathing, relaxation, and "pushing."

I'm 6 weeks away from my due date, so I can't say how effective her method will be, but it's given me peace of mind that I can get through the process of labor and opened my mind to an unmedicated birth. I feel like the book provided me exactly what I was looking for in terms of an exercise routine combined with mental preparation.

I just received this book "used" from one of the retailers. I got a great deal! The order came rather quickly and the book is in excellent condition.

I like what I see in this book. This is just what I was looking for! The exercises and stretches are explained in a simple manner and there are illustrations which also guide you to make sure you are doing the exercises correctly. It is a good book for beginners. You will learn exercises to help strengthen your back, upper body, lower body and ABDOMINALS. The goal is to help you have a healthy pregnancy, efficient labor, and quick recovery.

I'm glad to finally find a book that deals with strengthening the abdominal muscles CORRECTLY. Some books tell you not to work the abdominals at all during pregnancy, but how else are you going to push that baby out??? This book teaches you the correct way to safely strengthen them. Great book.

Rick Browne and Jack Bettridge lived almost a half century deprived of a true culinary experience, "Q". It was love at first bite. Soon they set out on the adventure of a lifetime, the quest to, eat barbecue, visit, photograph and write about barbecue contests. "Before it started, we didn't know barbecues; we didn't know the crazy, charming, giving, irascible, gifted, hilarious, corny, cunning people who make it happen."

"We burned to continue our education back in the land of "Q". And then one of us ... came up with the bright idea that if we did a book about barbecue we could tour all of the shrines of barbecue all in the guise of work." "Soon we were pilgrims to many strange lands: Owensboro, KY; Memphis, TN, Fort Bragg, CA; Lynchburg, TN; Arlington, TX and Kansas City, MS." Rick and Jack share some myth and facts concerning the history of barbecue. "Politics and barbecue have a long history as bedfellows in the United States. "Q was on hand at most of the great moments in American history. " In 1978, Memphis held the world's largest barbecue contest.

Jack and Rick kindly share recipes and techniques from the experts. Included are recipes for marinades and rubs. They discuss pork, beef, chicken and mutton. There are photographs of each contest Jack and Rick visited. I was particularly interested in the information and recipes for Owensboro, KY, the Barbecue Capitol of the World.. I find mutton delicious but a rarity in most areas. The restaurants mentioned are some of my favorites, Moonlite, Old Hickory, George's, and Shady Rest all have delicious barbecue and at the top of the menu is mutton. Hey Jack and Rick next time your down this way check out Ole' South. Barbecue.

Just looking at the photos and reading the recipes made me long to get out the charcoal. I've made note of where the contests are located. What a great way to spend a summer, traveling from one contest to the next. This book will make a great gift for Father's Day, after all most southern dad's love to fire up the barbecue pit. However, I can't let go of my copy, I'll be busy using it, plus I'm sure it will have sauce stains.

A book for someone who is wanting to begin exploring theatrical costume design or production.

My Bible for Costume.......2006-11-24

I found this book around 25 years ago. At that time it didn't have any explinations, only the designs and some general info in the front. I do pre 1660 re-enactment and still use and teach from my well worn copy. I put it in a notebook and lend out sheets to explain how pieces go together. It isn't totally accurate, but it is a starting place for new costumers. It is easier to explain changes to make it accurate from there.

I am a costume designer and have had this book for many years. I
recently purchased a copy for one of my student workers who has
gone on to pursue a degree in costume design. It is a great book
for fashion history overview. It is full of basic period patterns
that are simple to draft and then use your own details.
It accessible to beginners but a wonderful resource for professionals
as well.

I bought this hot off the press 22 years ago, and wouldn't be without it. This dog-eared book has been borrowed many times! I copy pages, draft patterns. Now, I'm going to get a copy for my son's drama teacher. It is a wonderful, basic reference, with enough patterns to get started. Really valuable for getting an idea of historical silhouette. I can't wait to see what changes have been made from my edition!

Accurate, clear, and user-friendly.......2006-10-11

This simple book is the ultimate on basic construction in period costumes for the stage from ancient Egypt to the early 20th century. This goes through history and shows for each look the following: male and female sketch of the final costume, labels that name important parts of the costume, undergarments (where relevant), scale patterns on each piece shown (except some hats), decorative patterns to help with the selection of trims, and instructions on how to wear (when needed). There is also a section on pattern drafting and draping methods, sizing, millinery (hat making), and special costume pieces (hats, wigs, corset sizing, animal faces, masks).

My book is worn and torn though I care for my books like some people do fine china. It is the most useful reference for a costumer, and as a designer, it is important to see what goes behind a design. The designs cover a narrow enough amount of time to show distinct and fairly subtle changes, while remaining general enough to give the feel of an era, but allow complete creative license. (And think of how much you save by not buying dozens of patterns, many of which lack the accuracy for shape found in this book!)

Choosing a Wheelchair.......2002-01-19

I found this book from Spinlife.com where they publish excerpts as an online aid to selecting wheelchair components.

The author is a long term wheelchair user and athelete who had a Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). He knows more about wheelchairs than anyone writing for the public. As such he is an effective advocate for wheelchair use.

The book is logically laid out from wheelchair history to the selection process to wheelchair maintenance. The style is informative without being too technical. However, the wheelchair is a machine so expect a little tech talk. The chapter on maintance is wisely a primer and checklist - most people who use a wheelchair are not advised to tinker with them.

I recommend the book, even to someone who is already using a chair with two provisos.

1. For someone with neuromuscular disabilty, the advice to use a manual chair is ill advised. All the PT's and OT's I have seen in the past few years recommend power chairs to save your arms and avoid turning a parapalegic into a quadrapalegic. As Dr. Silver puts it "Save your arms. They are your independance." and "When do I recommend a manual chair? Almost never..." (Post Polio Syndrome: A Guide for Polio Survivors and their Families)

2. Don't try chasing down his references on wheelchair reviews or evaluations. They are non-existent from any official sources and this reflects the age of the book (1998). If you want reviews and opinions on chairs, try wheelchairjunkie.com.

Songs My Mother Taught Me is the first collection of literature by this mature and accomplished writer. In her eloquent prose, Yamauchi, a Nisei (second-generation Japanese American) illuminates the neglected social and emotional history of two generations of Japanese in the United States, recalling the harsh lives of rural immigrants, tenant farmers, and itinerant laborers. Informed by her own family history, her stories and plays recreate the wartime relocation of Japanese Americans and their postwar return to urban centers. She captures their ambivalent longings for the prewar family and culture of Japan. She also writes more recently of very young Mexican immigrants hired in as cheap labor in southern California who view a middle-aged Japanese woman as "the American", and ask her for advice. The irony is almost too daunting for her to bear, as she thinks about the past.

Without bitterness, and often with quiet humor, Yamauchi's human-sized dramas open into larger social histories and the great narrative myths of culture. Like Toshio Mori and Hisaye Yamamoto, Yamauchi is a pioneer of Asian-American literature.

Yamauchi is a great example for Asian women to follow. Her plays are always an inspiration. Since I saw And the Soul Shall Dance on stage, I've become a fan of hers.

This book is alright. I did enjoy reading it somewhat even though the stories all seemed to be the same after a while. Although it paints a clear picture of Japanese-Americna struggles, most stories end with the predictable outcome. I did not like the ending of most of the stories. Furthermore, I am unhappy with the skewing of the plays "And the Soul Shall Dance" and "The Music Lesson" by the short stories similar to them. "Shirley Temple Hotcha-cha" is the best story in the book, offering a different end for Japanese-American women.
