A terrific read........2003-08-05

I highly recommend this book. With insightful commentary and meticulous research and analysis, historian Dede Casad has brought to life the tale of two heroic and extraordinary men, Richard Coke and Sullivan Ross. These men deserve far more attention than mere footnotes in state history, and the book will tell you why. Both men were from Waco,Texas during the early years when law and order was a matter of personal involvement and survival dependent upon almost daily self-defense. Coke was born to an aristocratic Virginia family and was educated in law at William and Mary College. He came to Waco in 1849 as a young man of twenty with his law books strapped to his horse. Sullivan Ross' family brought him to Waco as an infant in 1838, and he survived his childhood in the dangers of frontier life mostly by his wits and shear determination. Both Coke and Ross fought in the Civil War and each eventually became Governor of Texas.

Sullivan Ross (Sul) emerges perhaps as the more colorful, and certainly the more romatic, hero of the two men thanks in part to the survival of the letters he wrote to his young bride while he was away fighting in the Civil War. He entered the war as a private in 1861 and came out four years later a General at the age of twenty-seven. Reading details of Sul's battels, exploits and leadership, one is reminded of Ken Burns' now classic documentary of the Civil War. What Burns did with old pictures and voice over, Casad does with her writing - bringing to life the vivid images of the horror of the Civil War.

Sul Ross was a small, wiry man. Richard Coke was the opposite, six-foot three and at least 240 pounds. And yet, Coke's most meaningful battles were fought were words. While Coke also distinguished himself during the war, it was the bravery he displayed after winning the race for governor in 1873 that demonstated his mettle. It was a bitter campaign, somtimes illegal and not without down right fraud. The incumbent governor refused to turn over power and hundreds of Coke supporters poured into Austin, well armed and ready to fight. The story of the siege and taking of the Capitol reads better than a Hollywood script and serves as historic warning that the transition of power is not guaranteed to be peacful. While some may scoff at the notion, the events in Austin in 1873 are a cautionary reminder of what could have happened in the last presidential election between Gore and Bush when the vote count was in doubt. Other parallels with issues of today can be found in the challenges faced by Coke and Ross.

It you like history or just a darn good read, get this book.

So bad I couldn't finish it.......2007-06-08

I purchased this book after reading the great reviews. It is wordy, poorly written, and gives the impression the author is just making up sleep advice. The medical credentials of the author and the souces are suspect as well (the author lists GCFP after his name...what is that?). If you think yoga may help you relax then this may be for you. If you are looking for a better written book from a scientific rather than spiritual perspective I would recommend "The Insomnia Answer".

Sleep at long last.......2007-01-09

I first came across this book at 3 am on another insomnia night and was impatient for a solution. I didn't want any more pills that made me feel drugged the next day. I didn't want any more useless sleep hygiene advice, which worked intermittently. I also didn't want to pay $2,000 for a sleep study that would tell me I needed more pills and better sleep hygiene! Having suffered from insomnia for eight years, I was ready for a real solution.

Two things caught my eye about this book. One, a large percentage of the reviewers were medical professionals who used the method in their practices. Two, the book suggested an approach that would actually relax the body and calm the mind, not drug it or try to control everything around it and hope it behaves. This was what I was looking for!

After trying the methods, I can confirm that they work spectacularly; however, I do have a word of caution on the methods. Follow the steps in the book as exactly as possible, and don't go on memory alone when first doing them. Doing them incorrectly--even slightly so--can give you poor results.

This book is incredible! I was beginning to think that sleeping poorly was a result of getting older(I am in my 30s). Now I know that you can learn to be a good sleeper just like you learn other things! Read it and enjoy.

Rescue remedy for sleep.......2006-02-13

These wonderful tecniques in the book were invaluable these last couple of weeks. My youngest son has been very ill with a virus that completely disturbed his sleeping. We thought it would change, but didn't, so I taught him some of the Mini-moves in the book and he was able to relax and finally get the much needed rest he needed for healing.

As a very tired single mother of two, I have been using this method for a few years. It changed my relationship with sleep. Recently my 8 year old had a very painful infection and was unable to sleep. I did some of the techniques with her as she tried to relax. It worked! We both got a decent nights sleep.

I borrowed this cookbook from the library and after four home-run meals decided I had to own it. These recipes are pretty straighforward, without long ingredients lists, though some have many steps. The end results are healthy and amazingly "finished" tasting. She has a knack for making dishes taste professional with full, well-rounded flavor. Nothing I have made from this book has tasted "light" at all-- everything seems finished and made to taste the way it does, rather than missing anything. yum yum.

For those who want to eat Italian and diet too, Casale's book offers a glossary of ingredients and an explanation of the nutritional analysis which follows each recipe.

Organized by course, recipes emphasize herbs, fresh vegetables, grains and beans. Many recipes are quick - broccoli soup with garlic, rice with fresh herbs or mushroom and parsley, veggie burgers with tomato-thyme sauce, braised Belgian endive. Others are hearty - polenta pie with mushroom filling, winter vegetable stew, white bean with vegetable soup. And some are elegant - lemon couscous salad with spinach, stuffed artichokes with sun-dried tomatoes and herbs, asparagus and yellow pepper risotto.

Casale also includes a whole chapter of biscotti and another featuring desserts like mocha mousse, walnut and orange cake, baked pears. Primarily Casale concentrates on dishes that were deliciously healthy to begin with rather than extracting the meat and fat from dishes that depend on them for character and flavor. A practical and flavorful book that should get a lot of use.

Old and favorite cookbook.......2006-05-08

In a new edition. Looks like nothing's changed. And I'm very glad to have another copy.

But even though the way I cook was heavily influenced by the original, I never shared the garlic-phobia of a lot of these recipes. And probably never used quite as much olive oil/butter as it calls for.

But cooking vegetables with the pasta, dressing with oil/garlic is very good. And there were recipes that sounded yummy that I never tried, so I'm glad to get a chance to again.

When I gave up meat and dairy for lent I wasn't sure what I would eat! This book came in handy. It reminds me of cooking light magazine. I did add some of the cheeses they used for flavor. Other than that this book helped me keep to my strick regime. I'll make something from this book every week!

This is the sort of fun read and reference which can involve the entire family, keep kid(s) busy, and keep the family pet amused. By using the book as a project, the kids can be involved, take responsibility by planning out their activites, and spend quality time with their pet. And finally, we were able to read the book together instead of turning on the tube! This is one book we keep out for everyone to use!

Fun Stuff = Great Stuff!.......2001-03-06

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed Fun Stuff by Nancy Furstinger. It's easy and fun to read and has a lot of great activities for kids and their dogs (or is it "dogs and their kids"?). We haven't tried all of the activities, of course, and we only tried one of the recipes so far, but it's a book we continue to use and refer back to. We're still working our way through the web sites, which gave us even more information! The "K-911" first-aid kit was a great idea and we now have one safely under our sink. A great book! Highly recommended!

This book follows Heidi's Simply Beautiful Beading but it stands on its own by showing techniques to make the projects shown. There are well-defined photographs of necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and fashion accessories. None of the projects are particularly difficult to make once you know the basic techniques, briefly shown at the front of the book.

I've recently discovered Heidi Boyd's bead books. I love her ideas and instructions. They aren't "way out there" but are original, simple designs and the instructions are very visual and easy to follow.

Wonderful book for those new to beading. Easy to follow directions have great illustrated drawings. Each project lists a few items(you can jot down before you shop for the items) and don't forget pliers and cutters to put it all together and some sort of clip so the beads don't slide off the string.

The title says it. The projects are fairly simple and the authors have some pretty clever ideas. Tools, thread, wire, findings needed are a standard beginning for a how-to book like this. Usually relegated to an appendix are jewelry standards, such as beads per inch, but here they precede bead stringing, knotting and weaving. How to make and use jump rings rates a special mention. Most jewelry-making books neglect the handy jump ring. Pressed for time to make a quick jewelry gift? Yes, check out this book.

Great jewelry ideas.......2002-10-15

I have bought many beading books and have been disappointed in many, but this book in no way disappoints. It offers the same information for beginners on findings and needed supplies that the other books do but has an easier to follow format. All (yes, all ..no duds in this book)of the projects are actually jewelry pieces that I would like to make and own or that can be easly altered to better suit the jewelry maker.

Easy enough for beginners, and pretty, too.......2002-10-13

The cover of this book shows a good sampling of the pretty projects you'll find inside. The book starts with a short section showing photos of tools, threads, and findings typically used in jewelry-making. It's followed by a very good section showing basic jewelry-making techniques, including one of the best diagrams I've ever seen for making wire-wrapped loops, a simple but basic requirement for general jewelry work. Other techniques include using different stitches to join seed beads for the projects in the book.

The projects give the beginning jewelry maker a good introduction to many different techniques and styles of jewelry, some very simple with basic stringing of beads to more time-consuming, though not too difficult, sewing and netting of seed bead necklaces. A cute, simple new style includes beads knotted onto ribbon, and there's an attractive wire-worked necklace.

Though I think the instructions are good for beginners, this is great for experienced beaders also, because there are ideas I haven't seen in other beading books for design, bead combinations, and even techniques. Something new for me was a necklace of wire-wrapped bead sections linked together with lots of jump rings to form a netted design. I am also inspired by her grapevine necklace, the lemon bead necklace, and a beautiful blue right-angle weave choker. The only necklace that makes me say, "hmm", is a necklace incorporating a child's baby teeth; I need to think about that one.

We fell in love with Gertrude.......2000-07-02

This was our introduction to the writings of Gertrude and now we're hooked! We've heard of her fame for years (including the correct pronounciation of her name: JEE-kyll) and now we're ready to read more of her eclectic collections of thoughts and comments. This book has some great chapters including one devoted to her "pussies". Gertrude and her niece host a tea party for her cats and the menu includes herring, rice pudding, cream and little rolls of butter for decoration. It has nothing to do with gardening, but you gotta love it!
