Product Description
The many regiments that fought in the Civil War each had their own stories to tell about what they saw, smelled, tasted, heard and felt while serving in war. Most of these stories have been lost, but those that survive are compelling accounts of a dark time in our nations history. The Second Vermont Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the Old Vermont Brigade saw its first combat at the Battle of Bull Run and fought on to Lees surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. This work views the war from the eyes of the junior officers, noncommissioned officers, and privates that made up the regiment, and draws from their service, pension and court-martial records, and personal letters and diaries to portray the men as they were in battle, on the march, and in camp. Some were heroes, like Private William W. Noyes, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism at the Battle of Spotsylvania, and others were not, like Private George E. Blowers, who was publicly executed for desertion. A roster of the 1,858 men who served in the Second Vermont is also provided. Richly illustrated.
Customer Reviews:
Great regimental history of the 2nd Vermont.......2006-01-21
This is a superb regimental history of the Second Vermont Volunteers, about as detailed and informative as one could expect. The regiment participated in the war from First Bull Run to Lee's surrender at Appomattox, seeing their last action near Farmville. Oddly (and it's these kinds of fascinating little details that are sprinkled throughout the book that make it so interesting), the last man in the 2nd Vermont to be wounded (Thomas Broughton) was also one of the first, taking a minie ball just above the knee at Bull Run. Other major engagements include the Peninsula in 1862, Savage's Station, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, the Shenandoah Valley in 1864, and Petersburg.
The thoroughness of the book is truly astounding. Zeller cites from official records as well as individual diaries kept by the soldiers and letters that have come to light. The book is also well-illustrated with many photographs, and there are many maps included as well. Finally, a complete roster of the 1,800+ men who served in the regiment, including many particulars about each man, is also part of the book. Not only is the book a definitive account of the 2nd Vermont, but since the regiment served in so many important campaigns and engagements in the eastern theatre, it's also a mini history of that part of the war. It's an excellent addition to the serious Civil War student's library. [McFarland & Company offers an excellent array of Civil War books, many of them regimental histories like this one. Book Description
1883. In this study of Emanuel Swedenborg, while the spirit of adulation finds no place, our love, esteem, and sympathy cannot but greatly increase, as with our fellow servant we learn to give all the praise to Him whom he loved to serve. Our task is reduced to setting in such order the things most surely believed among us, as will cause us to listen to Swedenborg's own words and to believe with him that they were not from himself, but from the Spirit of Truth.

Like a good obstetrician, The Unofficial Guide to Having a Baby respects the intelligence of the mother-to-be. This mammoth tome is probably the best reference book on the market, giving nonjudgmental and fairly exhaustive information on such hot-button topics as whether to drink coffee during pregnancy and the relative safety of birth centers. The book lays out as much information as possible and leaves the decision-making to the parents--a surprisingly rare gambit in the bossy world of pregnancy books, which all too often insult the mom-to-be with sweeping dicta unsupported by hard science. Also like a good doctor, the book knows its limits, referring to other sources well and often.
The book's tone can be impersonal, which seems natural considering that it was put together by two authors, a team of editors, and a panel of birth experts including a doctor, a nurse, and a nutritionist. For color commentary, 150 new parents were consulted, but their voices are not the book's strong point, offering such pallid advice as, "A good-quality stroller will see you through all your children, whereas a cheapie will cost you again and again." The book's "Unofficial" moniker seems to refer more to the guide's commitment to laying out all the alternatives than to an irreverent stance. (Those looking for in-the-trenches attitude and tried-and-true advice might turn instead to Vicki Iovine's superb The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy or Ariel Gore's The Hip Mama Survival Guide.) While the book's hesitance to pronounce on emotional topics is largely laudable, in some cases it backfires. In 818 pages, the authors devote just a few paragraphs to single-mother and lesbian pregnancies--though, to be fair, a resource directory is offered. Overall, though, this guide fills a much-needed information gap in the pregnancy book market.

Customer Reviews:
You may want to buy the first (1999) edition of this book rather than the second (2004).......2007-07-23
The first thing I did when my copy of the second (2004) edition of "The Unofficial Guide to Having a Baby" arrived was open the table of contents to find the much-lauded "The Dirt on Diapers and Other Baby Gear" chapter I'd read about in other Amazon reviews. I couldn't locate it! There were other chapters I could have sworn I'd find in this book, but didn't. I was perplexed and thought for a while I'd ordered the wrong book. After fishing around Amazon and ordering another (older) copy of "The Unofficial Guide" I discovered that there were some pretty big differences between the 2004 and 1999 editions.
The good news is that most of the wonderful info in the 1999 edition of this book made it into the 2004 version. The bad news is that the organization of this material in the second edition is a bit screwy. Both books present pretty much the same information on conceiving and fertility issues in the beginning. After that their paths diverge sharply. The first edition is organized largely around topical, easy-to-find chapters and chapter sections like "Choosing a Caregiver and a Place to Give Birth" (Ch. 5) and "Morning Sickness" (in Ch.8). Most of this info appears in the 2004 edition, but it's integrated into the book's extensive week-by-week pregnancy outline and can therefore be easy to miss if you aren't reading chronologically or scouring the index.
To illustrate, each of the second edition's pregnancy week-by-week mini-chapters detail "What's going on with your baby," "What's going on with your body," "What's going on with your head," and conclude with a "Hot List: This Week's Must-Ask Pregnancy Questions." This last section is where a lot of the first edition's topical info ended up and it's not always clear - without the aid of the index - where to find specific questions answered. For example, the first edition devotes an entire chapter to what you do and don't need to buy for your new baby (the wonderful "Dirt on Diapers" chapter). In the second edition the authors bury this information in week 30's "hot list." Sure, a lot of women in their seventh month would probably be wondering about what to buy for baby, but what if you wanted this information earlier? You'd need to scan the index for keywords like "cribs" and then flip to the appropriate (often arbitrary) week of pregnancy. Likewise, the first edition lists "Following a Vegetarian Diet" in the table of contents under the large-scale chapter heading "Lifestyle 101: Making the Best Choices for Your Baby." The 2004 version, on the other hand, addresses the topic in "Week 7." This arrangement of material can make for some frustrating reading.
In addition to these organizational issues, the first edition contains some helpful chapters missing from the 2004 version. For example, the 1999 book discusses "Breastfeeding and Bottlefeeding," "Your Next Pregnancy," and gives a "Crash Course in Baby Care." Yes, the second edition touches on these issues, but not in much depth.
My advice is to buy the 1999 edition of this book and if you feel like some of the info might be dated, check out the 2004 version from your local library. The first edition gives you more information and presents it in a well-organized and easy-to-follow format. Used copies of the 1999 version also cost a lot less:) If you're looking at the 2004 edition on Amazon, click on "Also available in: paperback used and new" to see the 1999 edition.
Can't be pregnant without this book.......2006-12-19
I loved this book. I received it free in a new patient package as Dr. Sussman was in practice with my OB. I had already purchased "The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy" which I thought was a ridiculous satire on pregnancy. I had been given "What to Expect..." which was ok, but nothing compared to Dr. Sussman's book. I am now purchasing it for my sister-in-law, without reservation.
Great Resource.......2006-08-19
This is a very thorough and well written book. I enjoyed the "unofficially..." bits of information as well as the quotes from mothers along the margins. However, I found this book to contain largely the same information as The Mother of All Pregnancy Books also by Ann Douglas, which I preferred. So don't bother to buy both.
Great book for new expectant mothers that like to read but..........2006-01-13
Good Points: The book is well written its easy on the eye and the level of languaje used is very accesible for a wide range of intellects. The book itself has loads of information, specially for new mothers who may need an extra push and information on this wonderful process. The authors used good sense of humor on the reader and also can be very blunt when needed about things that can and will bother you during this time.
Not so Good point: personally I would have liked more detailed medical information on the stage of the baby, but that's me I'm very scientific oriented so I expected detailed images on the embriological side of what's going on with the little one at a given point in time. This can result in boredome to most readers, so I guess is not that bad after all given the fact that this book is intended to be part of the parenthood enjoyment and not a "to do" obligatory task.
The book is well worth its money and its a great resource for new parents but if you want a more scientific and factual approach rather than sociological, psicological point of view you might want to try another text.
Very practical and not at all preachy.......2005-10-13
This was a fantastic book. While I was pregnant, my husband and I would look forward to every Sunday morning when I would read the next chapter describing my baby's development that week. At the beginning of my pregnancy, I used several books but after a couple of months, I only referenced this one. This book offered practical, sensible advise and was not at all preachy. It offered different perspectives on subjects such as breast vs. bottle feeding without being negative toward any one subject. I highly recommend this book if you want a practical book that treats you like a reasonable adult.

Customer Reviews:
LOVE it!!!!!.......2007-02-13
Compared to Atkins recipes (and a lot of other low-carb cookbooks I've seen), this book was nice. For once a book that didn't have "Atkins Baking Mix," "Atkins low-carb syrup" and all those other specialty items that I can't seem to find anywhere locally, and are expensive to buy online. Finally a low-carb cookbook that is cheap, delicious, is a TRUE low-carb cookbook--it doesn't have sugar and flour or even potatoes like a lot of supposed "low-carb" cookbooks I've found do. The recipes aren't super involved like I've found many Atkins recipes to be. I have to admit, there has been a few recipes, after having made LOTS of them from the cookbook, that we didn't like so much, but there are many many many that we LOVE! And I've found his recipes to be pretty accurate. I've noticed many Atkins recipes I have had to adjust a lot on the seasonings because they have way too much salt and even on the cooking process it was just too long or not long enough or way off on the temperature, which I suppose depends on the oven.
And finally, a cookbook that has good desserts that aren't extremely expensive and don't require either sugar, flour, (which is a no-no on the atkins diet, even in small quantities!) or hard-to-find ingredients. It does call for xanthum gum (a thickener) at times, which I haven't had a chance to look for yet, but I imagine you could find it at most health food stores.
I loved the first soup in the cookbook especially, Russian Cabbage Soup. It's nice and spicy and tangy with a hint of sweetness, and it has hamburger in it so it's nice and hearty. It's delicious! There are also tons of good wing recipes.
I haven't tried a lot of the sauces but the basic barbq sauce is awesome.
I also want to add that I've been doing Atkins for 7 months now, and I've lost 67 lbs. I have 38 to lose. This cookbook has helped tremendously because it has lots of practical ingredients and yummy recipes, so it has been easy to eat a big variety of delicious foods and keep from getting bored.
A Great Low Carb Cookbook.......2007-01-18
I'm pre-diabetic and have to watch my carbs and I've found this cookbook to be a big help. I was surprised to read a review that called some of the recipes bland--this is the only cookbook I've ever had where I didn't feel compelled to "improve" on the seasonings. Either the author and I have identical palates or he worked on these recipes a lot to get the taste just right. Like another reviewer, I found the frequent use of artificial sweetener bizarre in theory, yet in pracice it always seems to work. When I've left it out I've actually noticed the lack--bizarre!
Another plus about this cookbook, to me, is that his dishes won't break your budget. I would love to eat South Beach every day but I can't afford mahi mahi and steak every night! Alex Haas has lots of recipes for low cost ingredients--cabbage, chicken wings and thighs, etc.
My only criticism is that this book is all about the meat. If you aren't interested in a lot of great meat recipes (although his cole slaw recipes are almost worth the price of the book), you might want to look elsewhere. I really would give this 4 stars because of that but it doesn't seem fair since it doesn't promote itself as a vegetarian-based cookbook. I'm not crazy about eating so much meat, but at least he makes it taste really good!
So if you're looking for a bunch of tasty, inexpensive low carb recipes with great details on protein, calorie, fat, and carb counts, get this book. It's especially good if you're diabetic--I used to have to look these kind of numbers up myself in a separate book and it was a mighty pain. This is one of my most frequently used cookbooks--I think it's a winner.
Excellent Recipes, lots of variety.......2006-02-28
I have quite a few low carb cookbooks and this is one of the best. There is alot of variety and recipes are easy to cook with items found in any grocery store. I especially like that the calories, fats, carbs, proteins, etc are broken out for each recipe. Some low carb cookbook only provide the carb values for their recipes.
Excellent recipes (but hold the sweetener, please!).......2006-01-03
The Good: This cookbook has the essential for a good cookbook: the food you make tastes good. I haven't found a lemon of a recipe yet, and they all look good. Moreover, this author avoids the common trap of relying heavily on bizarre substitutes for flour and cornstarch. The recipes are almost completely free of strange ingredients. Just good veggies, meats, and spices.
There is no baking section (a good thing in my book, because low-carb baking sections inevitably rely heavily on the aforementioned bizarre substitutes). The excellent dessert section consists mostly of rich, simple desserts that don't rely overmuch on sweetness. Good for when you want a little something satisfying at the end of a meal without eating massive amounts of Splenda or aspartame. The section on cheesecakes is also notable, with several approaches and several flavor variations.
There's also an extensive condiments section: ketchup, chili sauce, lots of variataions on barbecue sauce, several Asian sauces.
The Bad: Nothing, really.
The Weird: As I scanned the cookbook, I found recipe after recipe calling for sweetener as an ingredient. (I don't mean in the dessert section, either.) I was intrigued enough to actually count: 14 out of 20 soups, 17 out of 18 salad dressings, 18 out of 19 salads, 41 out of 75 meat/fish/chicken dishes, 10 out of 16 veggie side dishes all call for some quantity of "sugar equivalent sweetener".
Now, some dishes do require sugar or sweetener, but these counts seem excessive. Some condiments do too - ketchup, barbecue sauce - but what kind of nut puts sugar (or sweetener) in guacamole???
Recommendation:
Great recipe book, especially if you're put off by use of odd substitutes in low-carb recipes. Just treat the sweeteners as "optional" in most of the recipes.
Everyday Low Carb Cooking.......2005-08-05
All low carbers should have this one on their bookshelf. Great recipes and helpful hints. I use it every week. To many good recipes to make any one recommendation. Check it out.

This book is too technical.......2005-02-09
I found this book a little too technical. They have a lot of pictures of fish disections to show the effects of disease. I would rather just have a book with pictures of sick fish that are still alive. I need that sort of info to figure out what my fish may have.
Excellent primer on fish diseases.......2000-03-29
I found this book an excellent primer for anyone interested in fish diseases. The author writes mainly from a veterinary pathologist's perspective rather than an aquarium hobbyist. It covers all the major groups of fish pathogens in a clear and concise manner and is chock full of colour photos and drawings. The section on fish examination and post-mortems is excellent. It also has short blurbs on non-pathogenic diseases and drugs. I found the differential diagnosis section for various symptoms most helpful. The content value of this little book far outweighs its price.

Customer Reviews:
Knits From the Heart , a keeper!.......2007-05-12
A great resource for ideas and patterns for essential knits. Whether you knit for charity, or just need ideas for yourself, this book has them. I just love the baby patterns in this book! Also a good reference for finding or developing charitable organizations to contribute to.
Still Using this Book.......2006-05-10
This was one of my first knitting books. The patterns are very easy to read and I have made many of the items found here. The baby rolled cuff hat, and baby booties are a staple for gifts now. The felted blanket, as another reviewer states, is too expensive for an animal shelter, but fabulous for a gift for my friend's new cat.
I used the sock pattern for a while until I found some others that are written much clearer and easier. I wouldn't use this sock pattern again.
Overall, worthwhile and I book I refer to.
Very cute patterns! .......2006-04-05
I just got this book and have enjoyed looking through at the pictures. Since I am trying to finish a project for a baby right now, I haven't had a chance to start any of these new patterns, but I can't wait to get started on one. The only problem that I have is the use of double pointed needles. I have not tried that yet, so it scares me a little. Also, some of the yarns that she uses have been discontinued since the book is a few years old. For instance, Berrocco Pronto is mentioned a couple times and they don't make it anymore. Muench/GGH Goa is a good alternative.
What a let-down!.......2005-11-28
This book was a disappointment! The patterns for mittens, socks, and scarves are nothing special and can be found anywhere. The pattern for the felted cat/dog blanket calls for 4-8 skeins of Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride wool for each (at a cost of approx $7/skein) I think my local animal shelter would be much happier if I donated an old blanket and $56 worth of pet food instead of one felted blanket. The kid's hat with flaps looked a bit "off" with the flaps small and oddly placed. And the booties don't stay on.
Beautiful and Fun Projects.......2005-02-10
What could be a better combination than knitting and giving? If you have ever felt a little guilty for snuggling up for an extra hour or two with some yarn that you just had to have, now you can knit with conscience. The projects are cute, quick and fun to knit. The directions are clear. It's perfect for charity knitting (It even tells you which charities would like your gifts.) and children, teens and pets especially appreciate the projects.

How to build berms.......2001-01-23
The book Beauty All Around You has the subtitle How to Create Large Private Low-Maintenance Gardens, Even on Small Lots and Small Budgets. This book is no substitution for Gardens Are for People by Thomas D. Church. I expected more from the book that was provided. The book for the most part is how to build a berm, where to place it and a plant glossery. It addresses suburban lots of 1 acre or smaller and does little to provide aesthetic recommendations, just visual blocking using berms. The book contains just 12 color photos.

Customer Reviews:
"Everyday Traditions" is especially recommended for those just beginning to be a family,.......2007-03-07
The 2006 Grand Prize Winner of the 14th Annual Writer's Digest International Self-Published Book Awards, "Everyday Traditions: Simple Family Rituals for Connection And Comfort" by Nava Atlas was written for parents wanting to create within their own families those simple, meaningful familial traditions that once were commonplace, but in our increasingly industrialized, urbanized, technologized, fragmented lifestyles are becoming a thing of the past. In "Everyday Traditions", Nava draws upon illustrative personal stories of many women to show how even today, ordinary family routines can be embellished to create celebration, fun, and remembrance for all family members. These little traditions can include daily dinners and kitchen activities, activities preserving family history, ways of building family identity, and more. Of special note are the wonderful illustrations embedded throughout, the scores of simple and 'user friendly' ideas to apply to any family, as well as pages set aside for the reader to record and develop their own favorite family traditions. "Everyday Traditions" is especially recommended for those just beginning to be a family, and for those wanting to reestablish their family bonds weakened by the conflicting demands of modern society upon the various family members.
Already putting new traditions in place.......2007-01-10
A well written book offering some unique & interesting ideas for family traditions. Even provides some basic instructions & resource information.
practical and inspiring.......2006-12-08
This is a really cool book full of ideas for traditions and rituals for your family. There are suggestions for daily or weekly rituals like family dinner, reading together, family meetings; seasonal rituals like spring planting, summer relaxation, fall festivities and cozy winter traditions; as well as annual ideas for birthdays, anniversaries, and honoring the departed. Atlas also includes a section on friendship rituals including dates with friends, starting a women's book group, and my favorite - the lost art of letter writing. There are so many little tidbits that you'll be inspired to create your own special traditions that your children will remember and want to carry on.
Wonderful!.......2005-11-27
Everyday Traditions is a wonderful book! The personal stories in the book show us how to care for our soul in simple ways and to make meaning and art out of everyday activities. I highly recommend this book.
a surprising diversity of ideas to counter the hectic pace of life.......2005-11-18
I am a voracious reader who generally donates books to the library upon their completion, but with "Everyday Traditions" I'm making an exception. It is a book I expect to return to time and again. It is a book of ideas, so many and so good that I know I'll never contain in my brain all that it contains in its pages, so it's earned a slot on my small bookshelf. While many books will enrich your life while you read them, how many will enrich it in the days, weeks, and years that follow, and maybe even into the lives of your children and their children? This book truly offers this if you embrace the simple premise that many of our mundane tasks can be transformed with a minimum of added flourish and a different approach of attitude.
The book is divided into large chapter categories dealing with rituals of memory, season, food, friendship, etc. Though family themes predominate, it is NOT a parenting book, because it deals with relationships which extend in all directions: parents, partners, friends, siblings, and yes, children. Within each chapter is some narrative by the author and examples drawn from her own experience, but also there are numerous and diverse ideas from many contributors. And for the cosmopolitan-minded, approaches to tradition and ritual from other cultures are included. Thanks to the very clean organization of each chapter, if certain ideas simply don't interest you, you can easily skip over them, making this an enjoyable cover-to-cover read if you choose to approach it that way. Alternatively, you could just go to an area of interest and peruse the possibilities in short order.
Finally, as icing to the cake, the author is an accomplished artist who has illustrated the entire book, so it will please your eyes while leading you into new ways of expanding your life and those around you.

The autobiography of the director many consider the greatest in the history of cinema
Customer Reviews:
A Must For All Fans and Students of Film.......2000-06-24
Jean Renoir is one of the greatest masters of the art of cinema. This autobiographical work traces his life from his childhood in France to his later years in Beverly Hills, not in the conventional sense, but rather through the world of film. This is fitting since the world of film was truly Jean Renoir's world.
Jean Renoir, middle son of Pierre-Auguste Renoir, made his first public debut quite early, albeit quite reluctantly, as the little boy with the long, golden curls who figures so prominently in many of his famous father's paintings.
Jean Renoir's early life, in later 19th century France, was dominated by two people--his father and Gabrielle Renard, his maternal cousin, who was to become his nanny and later, his dearest friend. While it was Auguste Renoir who introduced Jean to the world of art, it was Gabrielle who led him to the cinema. Jean, himself, says, "To her I owe Guignol and the Theatre Montmarte. She taught me to realize that the very unreality of those entertainments was a reason for examining real life. She taught me to see the face behind the masks and the fraud behind the flourishes."
Jean Renoir begins and ends this book with Gabrielle Renard, and, along the way, he examines and reveals the profound influence this marvelous woman exerted over him. In characteristic fashion Jean writes more about others than about himself. He lets us peer into the lives of the actors, technicians and producers with whom he worked, in places as diverse as Paris, Hollywood and even India. And, also characteristic of Jean, the unknown often play a role as large or larger than do the very famous.
While most of Jean Renoir's personal life remains unrevealed (this is definitely not a vapid, "tell all" tale!), he does tell us how and why he became a filmmaker and he goes to great lengths when explaining the relationship between film and life. From the depths of his dazzling imagination, Jean Renoir created nearly forty films, films that Francois Truffaut called, "the most alive films in the history of cinema." Two of these films, Grand Illusion and The Rules of the Game, are often thought of as Jean Renoir's masterpieces.
But other films also live on, including The River, the lyrically beautiful film Jean Renoir made in India, and The Southerner, a poetic tale in which all the characters are heroic, in which every element plays its part and all come together in an act of homage to divinity.
This book should be required reading for all students of film everywhere for, as Garson Kanin said of Jean Renoir, "In the world he inhabits he is known as the best of men. In the cinema universe he is a living god."
Everyone, I believe, film student or just a lover of film, can find something to love in My Life and My Films, for Jean Renoir was a man of immense and daring imagination and creativity; he was both simple in outlook yet profound, but above all, he was a lover of humanity, one whose heart and spirit were always as generous as they were wise.
As fresh, funny and startling as a Renoir film.......1998-05-08
Jean Renoir, the son of the Impressionist painter Pierre Auguste Renoir, is regarded as one of the all-time great film directors. Two of his films, "La Grande Illusion" and "La Regle du Jeu", regularly feature on critics' lists of the greatest films ever created. Even now, over 60 years after some of his films were made, they still seem fresher and more modern (as well as more entertaining) than most of the films produced today.
This warm and witty book presents Renoir's own view of his life and career. It is not only filled with engaging insights into Renoir's own films and his views on cinema in general, but also amply stocked with vivid anecdotes, from visiting Berlin at the time of Hitler's rise to power to watching Jean Gabin and Marlene Dietrich quarrel in Hollywood.
For those who already know and love Renoir's films, this will be essential reading; for those who have not yet discovered them, this book should make them realize what they have been missing out on.

Book Description
Jean Renoir: A Life in Pictures is the first biography of this master of modern cinema--the director of Grand Illusion, Rules of the Game, The River, and other classics. Célia Bertin tells Renoir's story from his magical childhood to his first success in films, from his encounter with European fascism to his final years as the beloved "Frenchman from Beverly Hills." With the help of Renoir's family, Bertin interviewed everyone who knew the director in Paris, Provence, Bourgogne, and Los Angeles. Using first-hand accounts along with previously unpublished materials, she places this colorful, charming, and brilliant figure in the context of his time, his culture, and the history of cinema. Awarded the prize Therouanne by the Académie française in 1986, this acclaimed biography is now available in English.
"The spectacle of real life," Renoir wrote, "is a thousand times richer than the most beguiling inventions of our imagination." And his own life makes the point. He lived a privileged childhood in the luminous world of his father, the famous Impressionist painter Auguste Renoir. As a horseman and aircraft pilot in World War I, he was badly wounded at the age of twenty. After the war and his father's death, he seemed destined for a life of sportscars and glamourous women--he first took up filmmaking to glorify his beautiful young wife. But soon movies became his passion and his work grew astoundingly original. He opposed the rise of fascism in Europe, yet was approached by Mussolini to direct Tosca. In 1940, Renoir moved to America--where he became the mentor to a younger generation of cinéastes. He died in Beverly Hills in 1979.
"For a long time people thought he was only a dilettante, but Jean Renoir knew that, for him, movies were more than a hobby. He was getting ready to devote his life to them. From observing his father, Jean had learned the difference between a pastime and a passion, but would he ever be as passionate as his father had been? Making movies is both simpler and more complex than painting. You never work alone, and the team carries you along and excites you. That is an advantage with disadvantages: You depend on others, and they are not necessarily teammates whom you have chosen: they can be producers, distributors, or, ultimately, the public, which either accepts or rejects you. Without a public, you can make paintings, but not films."--from Jean Renoir: A Life in Pictures
