no "blood n guts".......2001-07-15
As the daughter of the author, I know some of the work that went into this book. It will not be a typical "blood n guts" story, but a factual account of what happened to Jerome. The author went so far as to take a trip to the Phillipines to research, and see for himself some of the places Jerome had seen. This book has been in the author's head for as long as I can remember, even if he hadn't decided to write it for the world until now. It promises to be a good read, and will have several interesting facts, all of which the author has documented...well. Read and learn.

Book Description
Although the circumstances surrounding a death are difficult to handle at any age, adolescence brings with it challenges and struggles that until now have been largely overlooked. But in this unique and compassionate guide, renowned grief counselor Helen Fitzgerald turns her attention to the special needs of adolescents struggling with loss and gives them the tools they need to work through their pain and grief.
Writing not only about but also for teenagers, Fitzgerald adeptly covers the entire range of situations in which teens may find themselves grieving a death, whether the cause was old age, terminal illness, school violence, or suicide. She helps teens address the gamut of strong and difficult emotions they will experience and the new situations they will face, including family changes, issues with friends, problems at school, and the courage needed to move forward with one's own life.
Using the clear and accessible format that has made The Mourning Handbook and The Grieving Child enduring and helpful classics, Fitzgerald guides teens through everything from the sickbed to the funeral, from the first day back at school to the first anniversary of the death. Above all, she lets teens know that even in their darkest hour, they are not alone.
Download Description
Helen Fitzgerald, a renowned expert in grief counseling, looks at the many different circumstances that make grief a part of a teenager's life -- from the death of a parent or grandparent after a long illness to the shock of the suicide of a friend -- and offers invaluable insights into a broad range of issues. Arguing that the needs of a grieving adolescent are very different from those of young children or adults, she discusses in detail the emotional impact of bereavement on young men and women who are simultaneously struggling through the difficult transition from childhood to adulthood. She covers, too, the unexpected, often disorienting repercussions that follow a death, from changes in family relationships and friendships to problems in school and "survivor's guilt".
Written with honesty and compassion, in language that will be easily understood by adolescents themselves, The Grieving Teen is a much-needed resource, one that will lessen the confusion and pain of grief and help teens renew their lives after the mourning period.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Book for Teens.......2001-11-04
I lost my Mom when I was 16, so when I was asked for some recommended books for teens who lost their parents in the Sept 11, 2001 terrorism attacks, this was one of them. It is a good book for any grieving teen. We sent about 30 copies of this book to New York City and Washington DC (along with other books as well). Helen Fitzgerald does a wonderful job explaining grief and the healing process to teens. I would suggest supplementing the book with some sort of journal like the book "Fire in My Heart, Ice in Veins" .. But this one is definitely worth purchasing for any grieving teen. It covers the full spectrum of grief's emotions - anger, fear, exhaustion, shock, disbelief and more. It also covers the funeral and what to expect, reacting to your emotions, and how to go on living your life.
Fabulous Healing Power.......2000-11-07
Although I bought this book for my niece who is 14, after my sister was killed in a car accident, I found the book useful for anyone mourning the death of a loved one. The book was written in a clear and concise manner. It has a table of contents that can lead you directly to the topic you want to learn more about. In our case we went to the sections that spoke about "when death comes sudden" and "no time to say good-bye". The author also writes about practical matters like what to expect at the wake and the funeral. There are even sections that some people might think taboo, like what does a dead person look or feel like. All these things helped us to come out of the shock of it all. There are two other book in the series: The Mourning Book (which I have read and is equally wonderful) and The Greiving Child (which I have not had a chance to purchase - but I will - I have another niece who is 4yrs old). Helen Fitzgerald should be congratulated in the work she is doing to heal so many she will never meet.

Harness the sun's power to cook your food! Here are more than three dozen recipes for everything from soup to baked goods that can all be cooked by the sun. Simple instructions and diagrams for making an inexpensive solar cooker are included.
Customer Reviews:
Good information.......2006-08-09
This book gives detailed information on making and using a solar oven. It even tells you how to can tomatoes and fruit in a solar oven with success.
Solar Cooking for Vegans.......2005-09-24
In searching for books on solar cooking, I am interested in recipes for omnivores. I have never purchased tofu or textured protein, and never will. I was very disappointed with this book; Ms. Kofalk stated that even though she isn't a vegan vegetarian herself, she wrote a vegan cookbook so as to not offend. Funny thing is, I am rather offended. This cookbook is of no use to me.
Also, I can't help but feel that Ms. Kofalk is perpetuating an image that only left-leaning, naturalist vegan vegetarians will be interested in solar cooking. It seems that in this age of diminishing resources, more and more meat-eaters will be interested in harnessing the sun's power, too.
Okay cookbook - ALL VEGETARIAN.......2005-04-13
The author notes "Because I am a vegetarian, all recipies are without meat, fish, or eggs." Many of the recipes call for "Bragg Liquid Aminos", which is a soybean-derived amino acid supplement.
If you aren't a vegetarian, the recipes are of limited value.
There are instructions for constructing your own solar oven, but most of the material is available for free from various Web sites. Overall, I don't feel that the book is worth the price.
Book Description
Renowned for their bold graphics, simple clean design, engaging rhyming text, and large stunning pop-ups on each spread, Snappy books are a favorite among youngsters ages three to five. Brightly illustrated by Derek Matthews, the Snappies have been a children's literary phenomenon for more than four years. Snappy Little Zoo takes kids on a trip to the zoo, where they encounter a fantastic collection of ten amazing pop-up animals -- from zany zebras to playful pandas and gawky giraffes. It's an adventure that's full of fun from beginning to end!
Customer Reviews:
As always, super.......2007-04-10
We're addicted to these pop-up books - my 11 month old son adores them, this is another great one
Great Book.......2006-08-21
We love the Snappy Books. Snappy Little Zoo is our 6th Snappy Series book. When my 18 month son wants to "read" a book, his first choice is one from the Snappy Series. The books are a great way to get your child interested in reading. The pop ups are so creative and the words are ones that can be repeated by a toddler. I highly recommend the Snappy Book Series.
Fun!.......2003-04-29
The colors and pictures are superb. The pictures literally "pop" out of the book. There is a whole series. My son particularly likes the Halloween one.
Book Description
This delightful pop-up edition of the classic storybook about a youngster loooking for a perfect pet is available for the first time. Lift the flaps and see each three-dimensional animal the ZOO has sent -- and the special touch-and-feel surprise at the end.
Customer Reviews:
A great kids book!.......2006-11-03
I bought this book on a friend's recommendation and it's great! The words are nice and simple, the pop up pages are neat and my son goes and picks this one off the shelf to "read". The only thing is that I make sure I'm there to help as he can get too eager and there would be nothing left to pop up before long.
Our Favorite!.......2006-01-05
This is a favorite in our family! My 10 month old son loves this book and we read it at least once a day. We have been reading it to him for several months and it is by far his favorite book out of all the books we read. He now lifts all the flaps on each page and knows what is under each flap. He loves the puppy at the end and pats his head. We also bought the "Dear Santa" book and have started reading that as well. I strongly recommend this book for children 7 months and up.
A So-So Book - a review of "Dear Zoo".......2005-11-22
This book is okay. Others raved about it but my three year old son found it boring. The reason I think is that he *wasn't* introduced to this book as a baby or toddler. First books generally tend to remain favorites, so my advice would be not to buy this for a Preschooler. A baby or young toddler would probably like it fine.
Pros
-- Pretty sturdy flaps that open from different sides. This feature helps young children exercise both their memory and fine motor skills (little fingers)
-- 17 pages including the title page. I know the description says 24, but they must be counting blank pages and the covers pages.
-- Interesting subject for babies and toddlers.
-- Text is repetitive and helps with baby and toddler memory and prediction.
Cons
-- For Preschoolers content is boring. The eight animals chosen are 'old hat' by the time most children hit the 2 to 3 range. Animals are: Elephant, giraffe, lion, camel, snake, monkey, frog, dog.
-- There is no rhyme in the text. Rhyme is one way to teach young children about how words work in similar ways.
--Text generally (after the first page) runs along the lines of "So they sent me a ..." to which the answer is something like "He was too ___ ! I sent him back." [The animal that was kept was a puppy.]
Three Stars. Average book in a large field of similar products. "Dear Zoo" seems sturdy (we borrowed ours from the library and one would assume it has seen lots of use) and the drawings are so simple that babies won't have a problem focusing on the subject animal.
Take a look at Amazon's "Search inside this book" feature for an example of text and artwork ("Surprise Me").
A favorite in our house.......2005-10-12
Dear Zoo was a favorite first book for both of my boys. They both learned to anticipate and lift the flaps by the age of 14 months. My two boys couldn't be any different so this book must be a classic if they both love it so much! And the best part is that my 3 1/2 year old now reads it to his little brother all by himself. They love it.
One of our favorites!.......2004-06-15
My 12 month old twin boys love this book. They know how to lift the flaps already! It will be great for teaching them animal names and making predicitons. I used to use this book a lot when I taught kindergarten, also. We would read the text and then think of animals that matched that description. Then we would look at hte picture and teh kids would all want to guess what was in each cage. A great book!!

THE Classic Shortwave book - needs updating, however.......2005-11-27
Absolutely fascinating introduction to shortwave radio listening...well written by someone very passionate and knowledgable about the subject! Not just a collection of dry facts about DXing but filled with Mr. Helms' personal stories and experiences that really make the subject come alive! It's all covered: Shortwave, AM/FM/TV DXing, Ham radio, maritime/utility broadcasting...it's all here. Now, why I am giving this book a "four" rather than a "five star" rating; this classic text BADLY needs an update as it was written in 1993. For example, I did catch myself wondering if stations really do still mail out QSL cards in this "online" day and age, and the section on using BBS is really very dated. Mr. Helms...if you happen to read this review, PLEASE consider revising/updating this CLASSIC BOOK - the Shortwave Listening Community will love you for it!
great introduction.......2003-08-08
This 1993 book is packed full of information still relevant to the hobby. It has helped me, a new shortwave listener, explore and get he most out of my new interest.
A superbly-written, thoughtful, and comprehensive guide.......1999-08-05
This is the ultimate hybrid of reference book and page-turner, thanks to Harry Helms' superb writing style. Prose is liquid, even in the sections that have a lot of reference information. Absolutely recommended.

Great introduction to Shortwave listening.......1999-03-25
As a newcomer to Shortwave listening, I found that Harry Helms' "Shortwave Listening Guidebook" has been the perfect introduction. It covers the technical aspects (such as the different parts of a shortwave receiver and how to use them, radio wave propagation, and antennas) in enough (but not too much) detail to be of use to the casual listener. There's an overview of the various shortwave bands, as well as what you may find between the bands. The many aspects of shortwave listening are covered, from listening to major broadcasters such as the BBC to such specialities as trying to hear distant stations, "pirate" broadcasters, and so on.
All in all, armed with both this book and "Passport to Worldband Radio", anyone should be able to enjoy shortwave listening.

Book Description
Part of a holistic approach to living, herbs inject the aromatic flavors that bring everyday cooking to life and embody nature's strength to help cure disease. Organized alphabetically, and with color photographs of each entry together with a variety of herb garden design plans, this book outlines the best ways to cultivate herbs and includes propagating, harvesting, and storing tips. Also featured is background information on the healing power of herbs, the origins of ancient treatments, the appeal of cooking with herbs, and simple recipes for cooks and cosmetologists.
Book Description
Rich in insight and compassion, Lost and Found is an eloquent exploration of the psychological issues faced by adoptees and by all children who have been separated from a parent and denied the right to know their true origins. Betty Jean Lifton, herself an adoptee, draws upon her own experience and her extensive work with adoptees, birth mothers and fathers, and adoptive parents to explore the harmful effects of secrecy on the identity of a child and the liberating possibilities of openness. A new Preface links the psychology of the adopted to that of babies born of surrogacy and other reproductive technologies. And a new Afterword explores the most recent developments in the adoption field, such as post-adoption counseling, open adoption, and the controversy around the adoption syndrome. The author concludes with a code of rights and responsibilities for everyone in the adoption circle, along with an updated list of support groups and counseling clinics for the adoption triad in the United States and Canada.
Customer Reviews:
Adoption for the Current Generation.......2003-08-19
I read most of this book in one night - not because it was amazing but because it made me angry. The author creates a portrait of adopted children through sweeping generalization that would have you believe they are all damaged goods. How do I know this is NOT true? Because I'm adopted.
I found the experiences in this book were from a different generation - one where adoption was a stigma to hide. Most of the experiences and focus was around lies told to children and the effects of a culture that viewed adoption as a dark secret. How wouldn't a child be damaged in a system like that! This is a book, written in 1979, is for a different generation of adopted children. It does not necessary reflect adoptions today, or those of my generation. If I were a potential parent looking to adopt today, this book would leave me hollow.
Not to say this book is without some saving graces for the adopted. For those who parents misguiding lied to them, or who grew up when adoption was still a stigma, for those who are seeking or who have bee sought out this could be an excellent resource.
I don't speak for all adopted children but I think the current generation is given more information and is supported in a variety of ways. It is not an easy path for any of the people involved, there are still legal battles as well as personal ones to be fought and won. I suggest seeking out other materials that are more helpful - such as Twenty Things Adopted Kids Wish Their Adoptive Parents Knew.
Each of us has scars, adopted or not. It is up to us to find ways to recognize them and to heal. For some that means moving past an old life, for others it means finding it.
To the adopted, their families, and those who may one day be part of the adoption triad there is so much more than this book covers. So much more happiness and love that is possible.
Good luck in your search.
Lost and Found The Adoption Experience.......2002-10-29
Lifton displays powerful insight and perspective of the adult adoptee. A must read for those researching the adoption experience, Lifton opens the psyche to experiencing the adoption world beyond the archaic "closed" system to a more humane, child-centered, open system. The research results presenting how the adult adoptee experiences life from an "outsiders" point of view would make anyone social worker with a heart consider the real issues in the adoption experience.
If you read only one...this is it........2000-10-12
In my life, reunion wasn't reality until my life was my own-so I went about it with some organizational ability. Information and what to do with it was what I wanted and this gave me great help in that direction. Those triad members who believe their status hasn't affected their lives, just haven't figured it out yet. My adoption 50 years ago has colored every relationship since that first one that ended (physically) 3 weeks after my birth. In order to put together the pieces of 'why' I am....important parts needed to be found, so I set about looking. BJ Lifton helped with a compassion I hadn't found before her book. There are many emotions connected with searching-and finding-no matter how pleasant or how ugly-and one Can't anticipate many of them without some help. Help is within the pages of this one. The one piece of information-above all else-she taught me, was that my search was mine. I owned it and could choose to do it, or not, at my level of comfort. After reunion, boundaries need to be built, in order to protect that comfort. The book helped me start that so when the time came, I could hold back until I knew just how far I could go-how far I could allow the others to come. All in all, it was like having a big sister, walk through it with me. She's a good friend-even if she's not aware I'm out here! Thank you BJ!
I couldn't relate.......2000-08-10
I found the book depressing since most of the stories involved people negatively affected by adoption. I couldn't relate to many of the feelings expressed. I would like to see a few positive experiences thrown in. On the other hand, if you are experiencing a lot of issues around adoption- this will let you know you are not alone.
A little depressing.......2000-08-08
I found this book too depressing. If you are a well adjusted birth parent or adoptee, you won't relate to all the issues the people in this book experience. I know adoption and reunion isn't perfect, but there are degrees of success. I feel this book should have balanced all the negative circumstances with some positives. This one nearly scared me out of pursuing a reunion.

Anne Geddes did it again!.......2002-07-08
With the birth of my preemie daughter, I wanted to fix up her room with some beautiful pictures. I purchased this book and LOVE it. The photos are captivating. I used a new razorblade to get the pictures out on the spine. I framed the ones that I liked the most for her room. Everyone that has seen them has asked where I found them... they are a real conversation piece. I was VERY happy with this book!
Loving Baby Images Like You've Never Seen Before.......2001-03-11
This brief portfolio of 20 photographs of babies and young children expands the metaphors for thinking about babies, building on the inherent contrasts of black-and-white. Although there are few images in the portfolio, their mind-expanding capability is far beyond that of more extensive collections. As a result, you will gain an expanded view of humanity that you did not have before. Each photograph has a brief description of the relationship of the models and background on how it was shot. There is no essay with the portfolio.
Seldom is black-and-white photography used primarily to accentuate the imagery of black and white together. This portfolio goes as far in that direction as any work I have seen. The stage is set with the first image which is the top of a baby's head supported by an isolated hand, amid the blackness of the void. This image eloquently shows the connection from one generation to another, and from one person to another. It is a beautiful and inspiring photograph. Three other photographs explore this imagery in other ways, each emphasizing the fragility of human life.
Other images challenge your assumptions. People with black and white skins are put in contact with one another in ways suggesting love, support, and intimacy. To me, these images echo the oneness of humanity. To test yourself on that, Ms. Geddes gives one mirror images for you to see if you react differently to the adult being black with a white angel baby, from a photograph of the adult being white and a black angel baby. The one that is perhaps the best from this perspective is a black and a white child kissing, in an image that could be two cupids celebrating love.
Two of the images also look at the connection between mother and child. One is a marvelous conceptual piece with the baby lying on a woman's abdomen upside down, simulating the in utero position.
Age as a context is wonderfully displayed in an image of two babies with hats on that make them look like little old men.
I won't explore all of the metaphors, but they are very uplifting humanistic ones.
Here are my favorites: Joshua
Full Term
Linda & Ben
Alexandra & Myls
Boys & Dover
Zac & Georgina
While I liked this work very much, I felt that it needed more examples to fully stretch the viewer. I graded it down one star for being a bit too brief. But it's better to have too few, but almost all wonderful images, than to have many images, but few good ones.
After you review the portfolio and think about its metaphors, I suggest you imagine the other feelings you have about babies. Which such feelings are important to you that are not represented here? What metaphors about those feelings would be the most challenging for you? In this way, you can extend the experience to expand your thinking even more.
Let looking at babies bring us back to the elemental truths of existence!
Beautiful babies.......2000-03-31

Customer Reviews:
an great book for people who love adorable kids & comments.......2001-08-16
When my friend was hurt in a car accident i was very down. No one could make me laugh or smile. But when i read this book I did both. Anne Geddes mix of adorable babies and uplifting comments made me happy and gave me a renewed sense of love for babies and positivity. I think that anyone who loves to see babies in cute outfits and anyone who believes that words heal deep wounds would love this book. This book is great for anyone! my baby cousin mackenzie even loves it and she is only 2! so if you are looking for a good book that makes you smile, laugh, and be overcome by happiness, this is definitly your book!
