This book is not for anyone intested in the Dee's work. It's a history of his life and an incomplete one at that. Look elsewhere.

Insightful and informative.......1999-06-12

Being a descendant of Dr. Dee I found the book very informative. It gave an insightful explanation of his conversations with angels and presented it in a fair manner. It also presented some good information on his personal life and family. It would have been nice to have more information on his children, however, even though the title indicates that it would focus mainly on his abillities as a mystic and astrologer. It is much easier reading than Mr. French's book, and coupled with Dr. Dee's diary, it helps to give good background and information on this very intelligent but unrewarded, underappreciated and greatly misunderstood man.

A Must Read.......2006-02-05

Although The Bipolar Child had great insight as to why my child was diagnosed ADHD at 6 and then rediagnosed Bipolar at age 14, I found this book to be extremely helpful as to what needs to follow now that my son is Bipolar. I have to agree with one of the other reviews written, that this book contains information parents are "assumed" to already know, when in fact, we do not. If you have a child suffering from Bipolar or depression, I highly recommend reading this book.

Great book for parents........2004-02-12

I work as an inpatient clinician on a child/adolescent unit. This book answers the questions and gives the guidance I am frequently asked for. Clearly it is a book that was written by very knowledgable professionals who have a compasionate understanding for what the overwhelmed parents of these children need. It is clearly written and full of practical advice and useful tools. I strongly recommend it for anyone with a child/teen with a mood problem. If you know one of these parents-buy it as a gift for them-they are probably too busy dealing with their life to get it for themselves.

Realistic, Informed, and Practical.......2004-02-12

As the mother of a bipolar child, I've read just about everything available. While "The Bipolar Child" informs about childhood bipolar disorder, "Raising A Moody Child" assumes that, as parents, we already know about the disorder and now need nuts-and-bolts coping strategies and techniques. (Am not knocking "The Bipolar Child." It was a necessary, groundbreaking book.)

I found that this book, however, offered what our family needs at this point in our daughter's life: tips, ideas, suggestions, and specifics to help parents and bipolar children cope.

The authors clearly respect parents' existing base of knowledge about bipolar and trust them enough to make use of the information provided without having to rehash the details of the disorder ad infinitum.

While this book may be informative to those who want to know more about some of the issues parents of bipolar children face, the book clearly is aimed specifically at the parents who already are on the front lines.

The book is written in a clear, no-nonsense, easy-to-follow fashion. I came away from this book with numerous strategies for helping my daughter deal with her mood swings--(techniques ranging from Playdough art projects to smacking a tennis ball against the garage wall).

This is an excellent read for any parent struggling with the problems of a bipolar child. Obviously, it's not a cure-all, but it's easy to read and, as 'bipolar parents' know, ideas for coping mechanisms are always welcome.

I appeciated the authors' directness and writing style. Although I read the book all the way through, I still pick it up now and then to flip to various sections for new ideas, to refresh my memory about a medication, or to give myself a pep talk.

Thanks so much to the authors for writing this book, and to my child's therapist for recommending it.

Powerful, Uplifting & Essential.......2003-11-20

Finally, a book that addresses all sides of this painful spectrum - lovingly, practically, and compassionately. This book explains Depression and Bipolar Disorder along with strategies to deal with it effectively, in language that parents and kids can understand. Together, they can take the actions that lead to succesful and happy lives.

It is one thing to face a singular loss, but yet another when the grief of an ongoing condition presents itself on a daily. basis. This book goes a long way to helping all concerned deal with that reality.

OUTSTANDING and FABULOUS!!!!! Her recipes are so delicious and her cooking tips have allowed me to adapt my mother and grandmother's regional recipes into healthier versions. Try Ms. Woodruff's version of Tiramisu---I serve it often and it's to die for!!

I collect all her cookbooks because the recipes taste authentic to the higher calorie ones. Good food is all about nutritional value and flavor. This book is a winner!!!

Overall Good Food Even With Reduced Fat.......2002-01-04

Terms like low-fat and fat-free often bring to mind reduced flavors and poor imitations. Fortunately, this is not the case with this cookbook.

There are recipes from appetizers all the way to desserts, and not only do they have more traditional recipes we're all familiar with, but there are less common ones, to make sure you've got variety to choose from.

Honestly, they are going to be different from full-fat versions of the recipes, and in a few cases, such as the Fettucine Alfredo, the healthier version really doesn't cut it - but for every one of those recipes, there are plenty of delicious ones.

I've used this cookbook often enough that it's definately got signs of wear - and it opens right to my favorite recipe from it, Lemon Chicken Linguine.

Each recipe also includes all sorts of nutritional information, so if you're really watching your diet, you'll know exactly what to expect from a serving.

This is a wonderful book for anyone who likes Italian food, but doesn't want all the fat that is usually in it. It contains great tasting easy recipes that anyone can make, with ingredients found in any grocery store.

The author starts out by discussing low-fat eating & the ingredients that go into the recipes. Information on products for those with special diet needs is included. A great resource list for finding these products is in the back.

The recipes cover a wide range of foods including appetizers, omelets, salads, soups, pizzas, breads, pastas, sauces, main entrees, & desserts. Polenta, Risotto & Gnocchi are also covered. Each recipe has nutritional information.

Some of my favorite dishes include the spinach & mushroom calzone, lasagna & mama mia meatball soup. I recommend using low-fat cheeses instead of fat-free ones, because they melt better.

This is the best Italian cookbook I have ever come across. As a Weight Watcher member, I am always looking for recipes that give nutritional analysis. Sandra Woodruff seems to have a great understanding of fat-free cooking and her knowledge base is superior. The recipes are easy to follow and shop for. The book is loaded with additional info about product packaging, substitutions, and fat fighting tips. I've only had the book 2 weeks and already I have made 8 nights worth of meals as well as dessert. Try the blueberry cheesecake! I collect cheesecake recipes and this is the best fat-free recipe yet. I took it to work and even the most critical food pleaser enjoyed it!. I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs to cut the fat from their diet. You won't even miss the extra fat and calories!

The reviewer Robert is correct: the book does not have "step by step" pictures of the procedures. So, it's very difficult to learn what is written without previous knownledge.

The book does a decent job,but I was under the impression that it was kinda like a school book,in teaching watch theory and repair,the diagrams are excellant,some of the watch repairmans secrets are revealed,how to build a bench is explained,as is,the neccessary tools,the biggest complaint I (personnally) have is that I wished he had used a blow-up of the indivisual parts(with their names)and where they go,then I would have an easier time with the names of the parts and how they fit together.

This book, although has been around a while, still maintains the basic concets needed to fix and repair a clock. Anythign beyhond this is proabably a manufactures questiosn anyway.

It is great to have a reference tool, and as a quick review so as not ot forget the priciples of clock repair and building. A must have for any hobbyist.

a hundred pages. Have only a little utility for teorical learning about old clocks. Today is practicaly useless.

I am an R.N. who wholeheartedly recommends this book. During my last pregnancy, I purchased a used copy of an older volume of this book. I referred to it so often, I decided to upgrade to the more recent version during my 2nd pregnancy and bought one for my sister as well. Indispensable and easy to use reference!

Easy to Read Reference Book!.......2007-06-29

When I was pregnant with my first baby I read this book almost everyday. I was able to look up my concerns and read clear and concise information about my pregnancy. The over the counter drug section is really awesome and helpful! I kept the pull-out chart from the back of the book in my planner to reference as needed. Now I am PG with baby #2 and I find myself reading back over information to refresh myself on what will happen throughout my pregnancy. I have yet to think of a question that I have not found in this book!

If you are pregnant this book is a MUST HAVE!

READ *THIS* INSTEAD OF "WHAT TO EXPECT WHILE....".......2006-02-22

This book is fantastic! It explains everything in a helpful, easy format. It makes it simple to find answers to questions in certain topics and cross refernces make follow-up questions easy to answer as well. Dr. Thurston writes with a happy, charismatic tone and unless you'd be offended by a reference to God creating the body to do x,y,z, I think this is one of the better pregnancy books out there. Also, it is very updated with recent scientific knowledge and advances. (I've read other books cover to cover and would truly not recommend What to Expect While You're Expecting. Most women I know couldn't stand it. I wish I hadn't wasted the money.)

MUST read for pregnant mothers.......2005-06-14

Forget "What to Expect When You're Expecting", 1000 Questions is a much better book, with a common sense approach! It is a reference-style book with answers to all sorts of concerns an expectant mother might have. I called it my "Don't Worry Book", because unlike most articles and books geared towards the pregnant mother, this book actually eased my mind. It gives very straight-forward advice to help you through those 9 months of change, helping you take care of yourself and your unborn baby. And it is conservative, which I appreciated. The author refers to "your husband" and also mentions God in the text. I find this very refreshing in our PC society.

I referred to this book nearly every day of my first pregnancy. It seemed to have the answer to every question I could think of. I especially appreciated the chapters on prescription and OTC medicines. I also often referred to the pull-out week by week calendar. I am purchasing this book for the second time. I gave it to a friend during her pregnancy who passed it on to another.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

This book gets a 5 because of the number of light bulbs that turned on. I have always wondered what the difference was between a mistress and a concubine. This book clears the mystery. The difference between the initial driving forces for Japanese immigrants is apparent today. One group came develop business and trade, the other came as contract labor. I wonder if there are parallels or similarities between Meiji reformers and Scotch Presbyterians?

Great perspective on the history of modern Japan.......1999-01-06

I found this book particularly well written, as it "filled in the blanks" for me, having visited Japan on business numerous times and having studied the language for about 2 years. I used the Internet to find the author's son to say how heart warming and enlightening I found the book. I also learned that the author is currently writing another book and hope to meet her soon. Memoir of merchant and samuri families in Meiji-era Japan........1998-12-22

This book gives a wonderful view of Meiji-era Japan. The Meiji era started, I believe, in the 1870's and extended to 1912[?]. During the reign of the Meiji Emperor, Japan first opened itself to Western culture and trade.

One of Haru Matsukata Reischauer's grandfathers was an early silk merchant who journeyed to the United States. He came from a merchant/farmer family. Her other grandfather was a prominent Meiji-era statesman of the samuri class. (I believe a marriage from these two families could only have occurred after the opening of the Meiji-era.)

This wonderfully written, elegant memoir gives an intimate portrayal not only of the Meiji era, but of the author's own experiences as her prominent family courageously distanced itself from the rising Japanese militartism that resulted in World War II.

The author is the wife of Edmund O. Reischauer, Professor of History at Harvard University and Ambassador to Japan during the Kennedy administration.
