Book Description
The Pocket Library of Spiritual Wisdom is an exciting new book series of original contributions by Rudolf Steiner to human knowledge from metaphysical dimensions of reality normally hidden from everyday consciousness. With his philosophical and scientific training, Steiner brought a new systematic discipline to the field of spiritual research, as well as fully conscious methods and comprehensive results. These books highlight samples of his work with excerpts from his many talks and writings on some of the most fascinating themes in contemporary spiritual research. They are easy-to-read, accessible texts with helpful introductions, commentary, and notes.

Review by former Physiology Teaching Fellow (6.0!).......2007-09-28
I am a former physiology Teaching Fellow, biochemist and personal trainer. Now, I'm empoyeed in the psychology field, but at one time I was very involved in this area. I have had some injuries along the way including a back, neck and wrist. I worked in a gym and I understand the potential to get injured from accidents and bad technique. I also understand how strength imbalances and misinformation can result in injury down the road. This is the context from which I'm writing my review.
First of all, I can't praise this book enough. If I could, I would give it a 6.0! For starters, it is well-organized, dense with useful accurate information and encouraging in tone. It is also honest, realistic and offers the reader high value for a relatively low investment.
In my opinion, this author and the author of Starting Strength: A Simple and Practical Guide for Coaching Beginners are the two best in the field bar none. I particularly like Stuart McRobert, however, because you will learn many valuable things from any of his books no matter what your level is. You will also learn a lot about what is and isn't possible based on your genetics and how to move forward if you are a hardgainer.
In reality, I think that one or two of Stuart McRobert's books is all you need. Most of his books are equal to three or more of other authors and all of his books are easily readable. You can see more of my recommendations on my listmania list under this category.
It is truly rare to see such an honest, balanced approach within this genre. It also rare to see so much well-organized and simple information all in one place. As I said... I feel this book goes beyond a 5.0, especially when compared to similar books on the topic. In a nutshell, it's the practical nuts and bolts of training without going over the top, exaggerating or not backing up what is said.
Definitely in the top ten of weight training books.......2007-06-27
I read all the reviews about this book and they sounded impressive. Went ahead and placed the order and it took me more than six months before I could lay my hands on it, since it was out of stock. This book was worth the wait. Very thorough and insightful and makes a lot of sense. You gain so much knowledge that you can't help feeling like an expert. My approach to weight training nowadays is more practical.
Excellent resource, the best book I have read on weight training.......2006-03-05
I can't really say enough good things about this book. No, it's not perfect, but it's heaps better than most of the books on weight training. This focuses specifically on safety and technique, not on routines or dieting. The author is currently putting out a new book with revised directions from this book and all the training/dieting info in one handy package. I can't wait to get it. A bit expensive but I'd rather spend forty bucks on reliable, one-volume info than waste my time and money on countless less helpful books and magazines.
Helpful photos, not only of good form but also common mistakes to avoid.
Clear explanations, almost excessive pointers about what do keep in mind as you do each exercise. The author is super-orthodox about safety and form, which may put off a lot of young guys, but if you've had a single back injury you will really appreciate his point of view. It's the type of thing that you don't want to think about until you've been there and suffered!
You MUST learn Perfect Form for Bodybuilding.......2005-11-29
There are trainees out there who are bench pressing 90lbs of iron for twenty reps who praise themselves after doing it, but know in the back of their mind that their right wrist is starting to get a little sore from their workout. When moving onto the barbell curl that wrist just hurts too much to complete a full set. Well "pain is gain" so they drop the set and go back to the dressing room knowing that it will be two weeks before they recover. Try giving the same trainee "The Insider's Tell-All Handbook on Weight-Training Technique" and watch them reduce the bench press from 90lbs to 45lbs for eight reps maximum. "What has gone wrong?" they might ask. "Why have I suddenly gone from brawn to frailty?" The truth is that nothing is wrong. They are just learning to do it right this time... and they will gain more because of it. While motivation bodybuilding books like "Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding" by Arnold Schwarzenegger, will certainly show you the vast majority of exercises that are required for a great high volume training (HVT) program, it does not go to great length to show you everything that you need to know about doing the exercises correctly and the pitfalls of doing them incorrectly. Danger workouts include the Vertical Machine Press, Straight-Arm Pullover, Bent-Over Barbell Rows, Bent-Over dumbbell Rows, T-bar rows and the One-Arm Dumbbell Row to name but a few. Although nearly everyone can get away with doing these exercises in small amounts without injury, they are considered high risk exercises and long term applications can prove absolutely disastrous. If the basic low-risk workouts can cause injury when executed without perfect form do you really want to increase the odds of getting an injury by doing high-risk exercises with bad form? While "The Insider's Tell-All Handbook on Weight-Training Technique" does not promise an injury free bodybuilding career it will firmly establish conditions that will prevent injury. If you can workout as much as you like as often as you like and do not need to nurse an injury then naturally the result is a gain rather than a loss that could have been avoided. Every exercise you learn from a book or a magazine should be cross-referenced with "The Insider's Tell-All Handbook on Weight-Training Technique" to see what it has to say. Even bench pressing professionals who have been at this for years will find that their form is not as good as what this book can prescribe. On first impressions I was seriously considering the fact that I had bought into another dud back page bodybuilding book that had hyped itself beyond its real value. I was concerned to find that it only contained 34 exercises and was full of self-proclaimed praise commercials all over the front and back cover. I have since come to learn that those adverts are there for good reason and 34 exercises expanding on perfect form is no small amount. The fact that it covers the big three - Bench Press, Deadlift and Squat is enough to substantiate the $20 price tag. It also includes Back Extension, Cable Row, Calf Raise, Close-Grip Bench Press, Crunch Abdominal Work, Curl, Decline Bench Press, Dumbbell Row, Finger Extension, Grip Machine Training, Incline Bench Press, Leg Press, Lever Bar Work, L-fly, Neck Work, Overhead Lockout, Overhead Press, Parallel Bar Dip, Partial Deadlift, Pinch-grip Lifting, Prone Row, Pulldown, Pullover, Pullup/Chin, Pushdown, Rader Chest Pull, Shrug, Side Bend, Squat, Stiff-legged Deadlift, Thick-bar Hold and the Wrist Roller Training. I had given up on ever doing a Close-Grip Bench Press. I guessed that some exercises are just not for some people. It took me several readings of the Bench Press section to understand that even though I believed I was executing right angle holds I was not, meaning that my hands where too close. When I was told to bring them in closer for the Close-Grip Bench Press I just ended up murdering my wrists and elbows. This book eventually taught me that my Bench Press was more of a Close-Grip Bench Press and my Close-Grip Bench Press something that was just begging for an injury. I can now perform both. Also I am more aware of back arching where I thought there could not possibly be any. All you need to do is to look at the pictures in "Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding" to see that even these professionals had no qualms about using a photograph where there is evidently bad form being used. You can literally see the holes after learning from "The Insider's Tell-All Handbook on Weight-Training Technique". It is also the kind of book that becomes more useful the more you use it. This is by no means a quick-fix booklet but a much needed and much sought after bodybuilding manual. I would certainly read and learn everything in here before I consider any other book outside of it. While the Schwarzenegger bible is a great motivation tool this book is really where you want to focus. Forget all the other books about different training methods until you get perfect form right first and then you will be in a much better position to judge other training methods, especially the ones that tend to have an impact on executing perfect form correctly. For some reason other books and bodybuilders keep making reference to slow and controlled exercising to avoid injury. They erroneously call this `perfect form' from time to time. Injury has nothing to do with the speed or control of the exercise. Injury occurs because of bad form. But once you perfect form you should go slowly. If there is any advocate for `one method' in bodybuilding that can improve on gains then that `one method' is learning perfect form. I will update this review as I do more research/practice. Until then...
Astalavista baby!
*Updates*
- His other book "Brawn" teaches doing the big three progressively for the best gains - Squats, Deadlifts and Bench Press, so learn them and do them.
- Read "Brawn" after you read this.
- read "Beyond Brawn" for advanced training material.
- Watch out for the "Breathing Pullover" exercise. This can cause shoulder discomfort. Stop doing them if you feel your shoulder pulling.
- Pushdowns are for toning triceps not for building tricep muscle. Use dips for that.
- Have someone show you the deadlift before you do any.
- Dumbbell incline bench press on p.93 is not the best. Bring elbows up to shoulder level and dip them slightly. Go slow getting them back into this position.
- He has a book called "Build Muscle, Lose Fat, Look Great!" that has updates on form with other good info.
The Book of Technique for all types of weightlifters.......2005-05-01
Most weight training books bifurcate either in the direction of body building or powerlifting. But both camps have common ground in needing to learn propert technique. This is the book, and it has something for everyone in detail. If you are a body-builder there are plenty of isolation exercises described, even though the author emphasizes compound lifts. If you are a powerlifter/strength trainer, it has very detailed descriptions and pictures on the squat, deadlift, bench press, overhead presses and even a fair amount on grip work.
The author obviously wrote a book that he would have liked to have had when he began his training. As McRobert explains in several places, he now has a bad back due to years of improper training. He has written this book to help others avoid the same fate or, as in my case, to help us train despite of such drawbacks.
You cant train when you are injured, so get smart and learn proper technique. You would do wise, toward that end, to study this book thoroughly.

Book Description
Are you trying to eat a more healthful diet, but having trouble giving up your favorite foods? Let Elaine Magee come to your rescue with more than 100 delicious recipes that look and taste like the ultimate indulgence but weigh in with far fewer fat grams than you would think. A registered dietitian, Elaine has been creating low-fat versions of America's favorite recipes for more than a decade; she knows the best low-fat recipe starts out with the best high-fat recipe. In Lighten Up!, she's taken classic American dishes so loved they have been the favorites of generation after generation, and "enlightened" every one.
How about a decadent Chocolate Cheesecake with Chocolate Truffle Topping? The original recipe contained 19 grams of fat per serving; Elaine's made-over version has 9 grams, and all of the luscious creamy texture and taste. Feel guilty when you nibble on that crispy snack mix? Try Elaine's recipe, with half the fat grams, and see if you can tell the difference. Who said you can't have your cake and eat it too? Savor Crumb Coffee Cake with Broiled Topping with your morning coffee, and enjoy knowing you're consuming about half the fat grams in the original recipe.
Each recipe has a complete nutritional analysis of the original and the lighter version, so you can see how many fat grams and calories you've saved. And in a special chapter. Elaine shares her low-fat cooking secrets so you can transform your own family favorites: how to cut fat without sacrificing taste, texture, or appearance; which cooking methods work best; more healthful substitutes for high-fat and high-calorie ingredients; and much, much more.

Yummy!.......2006-08-16
I love this cookbook. It has loads of tasty, low fat recipes. Elaine offers so many simple alternatives in a easy-to-follow book. She really knows her stuff. I'm not one to spend hours in the kitchen, but her cookbooks inspire me to prepare heathly meals for family in a short amount of time.
Cut Fat...And Taste.......2006-07-16
Elaine definitely cut the fat. She also, however, cut the taste a huge way. There are definitely some books out there...especially a couple published in the last year or 2 that are great. They really cut fat and keep flavor. This one, unfortunately, is not one of them.

exquisite book.......2002-04-06
this is a haunting, meaningful book with eerie and unsettling illustrations. it certainly has won a permanent place in my library. however, i wouldn't give it to a child to read on their own the first time... if you are going to share it with a child, might be best to be prepared to have a very thoughtful conversation about the contents.
"Charlotte's Web" meets "Animal Farm".......1999-10-23
Are you worried that your kids may be sleeping to soundly? That they are too well-adjusted? Then dig up a copy of this! "Little Pig" is a truly awful book. I have read many less-than-stellar books over the years, and this is one of only two that stand out as being the absolute bottom of the barrel. The horrific story combines with the grotesque illustrations to make an astoundingly unpleasant work.

Customer Reviews:
Not for "advanced" seekers.......2001-07-01
When I say "advanced", I just mean people who are relatively well-read and informed about the various currents of "thinking the mind" in different world traditions, including modern Western research. After I heard those famous words uttered by "The King" (of CNN)- the same words quoted on the dust-jacket - I couldn't wait to get hold of the book. What a disappointment..! It is all TOO obviously written for the "layman" - where's the bibliography, for instance? It's insubstantial, almost a joke. But that's because my expectations were too high, I suppose. I'm sure that people who are interested in information about "new" (or "alternative") mind research in the West, presented in an accessible, very readable (if, from time to time, infuriatingly oversimplified) way, and who have no experience whatsoever in this field, would find it very helpful. It is for them, after all, that the book was written. It's the marketing that was misleading. (It is interesting, though, that Ms. Shanor - witness her recent new appearance on "Larry King" - should feel compelled to promote the book all over again, a mere year and a half after its publishing.)
ASTONISHING INSIGHT TO A COMPLEX SUBJECT.......2001-06-25
Animal or human, the study of the mind has always been a source of fasination to me and is what prompted my studies in psychology. No matter how much we know, we can never know enough; there is always so much more to learn. For those who have not pursued this interest through any formal course of study, this book is an excellent place to start. Through it, the reader will have a better understanding of how our mind develops as a child, and what happens in Multiple Personality Disorder, usually a result of servere trauma or child abuse. The book also explores what takes place when we dream and the close relationship between our mind and the physical body.
For those who hope to find a "How To" book on solving life's problems, ...you may be disappointed if that is what you expect. The mind is a complex instrument. Think of it as an enormous complex computer system, compounded a million times over by feelings and emotions which your desk-top computer does not have. While there are many self-help books available on a variety of topics, there is no one specific book that is going to tell one how to solve or "quick fix" many of life's more serious or challenging problems, such as diagnosing and living with MPD - that requires extensive professional counselling. I believe the author's intent was to give us a better understanding of how the mind works, as opposed to a solution in solving or "fixing" our problems. In that light, he has fulfilled his objective.
"The Emerging Mind" is well written by a professional author, experienced in the field. Unlike some other books on the subject which can be somewhat complicated for a lay person to understand, this one is easily understood and written in an enjoyable, interesting format. It is a thought-provoking journey into our own intricate network system...the human mind.
A Tool for Understanding.......2000-08-05
"The Emerging Mind is one of the best books I've ever read! I learned more about the mind than in all the many books I read over the years -- and I loved reading the book. Couldn't put it down. I was especially surprised by the Hypnosis chapter. WOW."
Resource for the Mind.......2000-08-05
When a friend gave me a copy of The Emerging Mind and said if I read any book this year it should be this one, I thought he was crazy. Now I know why he said that, so I want to share my enthusiasm. Get this book. You won't be sorry.

"Dr. Shanor brings together some of the most interesting research and ideas! From how to improve our memories to how a child's mind develops -- in a healthy way -- to her "Beam Me Up Scotty" prediction about how our thoughts travel. This is amazing and credible, because she and her contributors know their science. Just goes to show that truth really is more amazing than fiction. I can't believe how much good stuff is presented in one book!"

"There was someone outside, tapping at her window".......2007-10-17
Higuchi Ichiyo lived the classic tragic writer's life-- poverty, a struggle for success, death by tuberculosis at 23. She is considered to be the first professional female writer in Japan. She is an extremely popular literary figure in Japan-- her popularity due to both the quality of her work and her all too short life.
This book contains a critical biography written by the late Robert Lyons Danly. He also translated and anthologized nine of her short stories in the volume. The critical biography is concise and informative, if a little bit on the dry side. The biography is spiced with little bits of her journals.
The selection of stories spans the career of the writer, moving from her most unformed and derivative work to her more mature stories of the floating world. Some of the stories are stunning (particularly "Child's Play"). It is difficult not to wish that Higuchi Ichiy could have survived to a more advanced age and a more developed voice.
Recommended reading for those with an interest in Japanese literature.
Aren't titles rather hokey?.......2002-03-26
After celebrating a golden age that was hundreds of years ahead of other civilized nations, women in Japan quickly fell from the cultural vanguard they had enjoyed during the Heian and were silent throughout the succession of bakufu governments that ended with the Meiji restoration in 1868. Ichiyo is widely credited as one of the first female voices to re-emerge after this extended silence. Though her career was cut short by her early death, several of her short stories are still in wide circulation in Japan and elsewhere. The beauty of this book is that it not only includes her own writings but also a rather deftly crafted biography. It has been my experience that non-Japanophiles tend to shy away from Japanese literature for lack of understanding the culture. The inclusion of the biography in this work makes it more approachable for those wishing to delve into the world of Japanese literature without undertaking a study of Japan's history and culture.
One of the great classics of world literature.......1999-04-23
Deservedly, this 19th century's woman's writings are considered some of the greatest in the world. Robert Danly has done a wonderful job of bringing Ichiyo to us. Out of a different time and world, he has still managed to make her accessible to an English reader.
The first half of the book is devoted to biographical material about Japan's unique and memorable real-life heroine. The second half presents nine of her short stories in translation. Each story its own literary jewel.
I've read thousands of books and this is one of my most treasured.
