    Book Description

The first third of this book sets the stage for the remainder of the book, beginning with Ken Marshall's enlistment in the navy at age 16. The second half of the book chronicles the experiences of many 16-year olds who couldn't wait to get into World War II. The war was not as pictured in most Hollywood movies; combat wounds were not always wounds to the flesh and blood. Many wounds were also to the psyche and to sensitive young emotions, and were not as easily treated as wounds of the flesh. Such wounds often festered inside for many decades before being diagnosed and treated.

I grew up in the the Schenectady, N.Y., area and, along with my father used to watch "The Shoe" race at all the local tracks. This book captures the essence of that era, and is loaded with excellent photographs and anecdotes. Told in an entertaining and straightforward style, it is a "must-have" for anyone who is or was interested in stock car racing in the New York/New England area in the early days of NASCAR.

5 out of 5 stars Forget the Rest, This is the Marat biography to read.......2006-08-26

As the author notes in the introductory epigram, "For historians ... reactions to Marat are a touchstone of feelings about the French Revolution. (1) Jean Paul Marat has always been a polarizing historical figure. Conservative historians (e.g., Harlow Giles Unger's Lafayette biography) portray him as unflatteringly as possible, while socialist historians and leftist playwrights have romanticized his revolutionary enthusiasms.

Clifford Conner avoids these pitfalls. He is not interested in "liking or disliking Marat or of empathizing with him or not." (5) He admires historian Georges Lefebvre's still-standard and still-indispensable synthesis, and asserts that subsequent revionists have been woefully inconsistent in their evaluations of Marat's historical contributions. He exposes their allegations (e.g., Marat was a criminal, Marat was insane, Marat was a charlatan) as unwarranted and unsubstantiated.

Conner's major reassessment revolves around Marat the scientist (5 chapters) rather than just Marat the agitator and revoluionary (3 chapters). What was Marat's life before 1789? Public political activism only entailed the final four years of his life, and his martydom.

Conner's prose is crisp and jargon-free. He succeeds in filling the "void" of no new English language biographies of Marat since 1927! In an unfortunate era where some Americans bash the French for no good reason, any English-language reader the least bit interested in the initial phases of the French Revolution (1789-1793)will be enlightened by this biography of l'Ami du Peuple (the friend of the people). It's the best currently available among amazon.com's offerings on Marat.

I bought this book based on the good reviews I saw here. It's not the worst book I've ever read, but I would have rather spent that money on a new subscription to a fitness magazine, I would have definitely gotten a lot more mileage out of my dollars that way. Monica Brandt is nice and she's gone a long way in the fitness industry. I expected more from her book. There's nothing here worth paying so much for.

5 out of 5 stars full of inspiring and motivating fitness info.......2007-04-12

as a christian and a fitness buff, i was delighted to read a book that touched on both! i have numerous fitness books and magazines and after reading this book i can honestly say that i read something that was new and impacted my fitness routine. yes, it is easy to understand and touches on basics but there are so many misconceptions out there that it was just what i needed. I have tried two of the recipes already and they are yummy-not like cardboard! I have never read a fitness book where the author devotes sapce to changing habits and becoming motivated. it impacted me and i was able to apply the information to my life. thanks Monica!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Basic but good.......2006-12-28

Monica Brant is a superstar in the fitness industry. I've always admired her - she is muscular and fit, but still feminine. I've read many articles by her and about her - so I was delighted to see that she came out with a book of her own. "Monica Brant's Secrets To Staying Fit and Loving Life" is a small book but it is packed with a lot of information. Starting off with a mini-biography, we get a small glimpse into what and who (Marla Duncan) inspired her. Brant then moves on to give brief but to-the-point chapters on form, routines, nutrition, recipes and motivation. There is a good section with photos of Brant doing the exercises. Glossy pics of her magazine covers are splattered throughout the book, but it never feels like she is being narcissistic about it. At the end is a small section of Q&A.

The exercises are very basic as are the routines. If you are experienced in the gym, you may find this book a bit slim and perhaps too "easy". Newbies will be delighted though as this book pares it all down and makes it digestible. Brant has a way of taking the complication out of working out and makes you feel as if you too, can achieve fitness goals. But she is also careful to let the reader know that they need to set realistic goals for themselves as her body requires a LOT more work than the routines that she lays out in her book. If you are looking for something more serious, then I recommend that you check out Anja Langer's classic book: "Body Flex, Body Magic". But if you are just getting started or perhaps happen to be a fan of Monica Brant, then this book will suit you just fine.

        4 out of 5 stars Nicely written.......2006-08-24

Monica Brant has been an inspiration to me for quite some time. Although this is information that I already knew, it is always nice to read what she is doing for her own routine. A great resource for beginners and an inspiration for everyone.

I was disappointed with this book. I am a personal trainer and thought I would pick up new information from such a big star in the fitness industry. This book is only for beginners to exercise.

This is one of my favorite books. Because every time I've made a recipe for an invitation, neither I nor my guests can stop raving about how fantastically delicious the flavors are. This is the book I refer to for great ideas, great reading, and to indulge my palate. Of special note, is the section on dinner themes for entertaining, starting on p. 171. And if you would like to see for yourself, try the following menu: Reggae Evening, which includes: Montego Red Pea Soup (one of the best soups I've ever had - complex flavors that will have your taste buds singing), Home-Style Jamaican Chicken (melts in your mouth juicy), La Bamba Rice and Rum Raisin Ice Cream (as with all homemade Ice Creams - better to eat within a few hours). This dinner is a great way to entertain a party of 6, you will be pleasantly surprised!

I enjoy cooking with this book a whole lot.
The recipes are easy to follow, the variety is nice to see, and the extra tidbits of information are a nice touch for those "armchair" cooks out there.
If you're looking for a pretty photo filled cookbook, this isn't for you, but you're into real content and excellent recipes, go for this book.
I'm especially fond of the North African and Eastern European recipes.

        5 out of 5 stars A go to cookbook.......2005-10-16

It isn't exactly the definitive cookbook for whatever cuisine you are looking for but the recipes are a great starting point for trying new cuisines or exploring those you currently enjoy. Every recipe I have tried has come out great. It's really good for impromptu dinners or week night suppers because the ingredients are easy to find and the recipes are easy to follow. In addition you get a nice travelogue that accompanies the various cuisines. It's basically a fun cookbook to cook from and to read.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but title is misleading.......2005-09-26

I have always found Sheila Lukins' cookbooks to be excellent. While not always completely practical (but one could get around this by learning to substitute canned chicken stock for her homemade, etc.), the recipes always work, and 99% of the time they taste good.
I have tried many recipes in this cookbook since I first got it 8 or so years ago, and I have been pleased with all of them (especially her soup recipes, which are always delicious). I have made many of them for company, and my guests have always enjoyed them. (The Summer tomato risotto is a favorite recipe when the temperature here begins to rise).
That said, these are not all "authentic" recipes - this cookbook, I'm sure, was a Herculean effort in and of itself to put together, and tracking down truly authentic recipes would probably have been more work. This cookbook should really have been called "Restaurant Recipes from All Around the World and Recipes inspired by International Dishes" (or something to that effect.) If you are looking for truly authentic dishes, this is not the book to go to - I would simply pay for cookbooks by native chefs from the countries that you are interested in - but if you are interested in easy, delicious recipes by Sheila Lukins and her friends, a sort of continuation of the Silver Palate cookbook, then this is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Variety and variations.......2004-09-01

Lukins satisfies any number of hankerings with a mix of modern and traditional, capped with her own American flair.

Organized by course (appetizer, soup, meat, etc) rather than by cuisine, Lukins, of "Silver Palate" fame, adapts a Chilean cooking marathon to a refreshing fresh corn and chicken chowder, journeys to the hills of Martinique for a rich curried pork, cajoles a Seville chef for the secret of dorade baked in salt.

Although she offers plenty of traditional recipes, from Magyar Goulash to Swedish Roast Goose, she's just as likely to sample something and be inspired to embellish - or simplify. Chapters are interrupted with short essays on regional wines or teas or markets. The variety is endless, variations are encouraged and every dish is guaranteed to make your mouth water.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-07-05

The philosophy of Santayana is remembered mostly by his theory of aesthetics, which is discussed in detail in this book. His aesthetic theory is basically subjective, or "psychological", and if viewed from a contemporary standpoint, somewhat at odds with current developments in neuroscience, but closer than most schools of Western philosophy. All philosophical theories of aesthetics are interesting to investigate from the standpoint of comparing them to what is said about the human aesthetic faculty in modern research in neuroscience.

As in ethics, Santayana approaches aesthetics in three different ways, namely as the exercise of the aesthetic faculty, the history of art, and the psychological. The first two do not concern the author in the book, his attention devoted entirely to the third. His intention is to remove himself from the influence of the poets and of Plato, and find the out how ideals are formed in the mind, how objects may be compared with them, what properties are shared in beautiful things, and the process by which humans become sensitive to beauty and in turn value it. He is after a definition of beauty that explains its origin in human experience, and one that explains the human capacity to be sensible of beauty and the relation between a beautiful object and its ability to excite the human senses.

The author takes a different definition of aesthetics, being one that he calls "critical" or "appreciative perception", and which results from combining a notion of criticism with that of the notion of aesthetics as a theory of perception. Santayana wanted to develop a theory of aesthetics that relies on perceptions as a judgmental, critical notion. Perceptions that are not appreciations are thus to be excluded. An aesthetic theory then deals with the "perception of values".

The author's view of religion is well-known, and his atheism rare for his time. The religious imagination he says, has resulted in creations that rival those of the poets and novelists, so much so, he says, that humans believe the content of these creations to have objective reality. The ideas of these divinities are further enhanced by the realization of their natural power, with the belief in the reality of an ideal personality bringing about its further idealization, eventually spanning many human generations. History and tradition are cast by the imagination of these deities, in which peity resides and is nourished. The author of course does not excuse the God of Christianity from this, but he acknowledges the possibility that the human conceptions of Christ and Mary may in fact have real counterparts (the evidence of this not to be explored in this work).

The author states that unless human nature undergoes radical change, the main intellectual and aesthetic value of ideas will come from the creative acts of imagination. If human perceptions are not connected with human pleasures, there would be no need to look at things, no interest in them at all, and no importance would be imputed to them. It is indeed amazing how many ideas, thought to be rational, logical, or abstract, actually fit in with the author's aesthetic worldview. Concepts and results in science and mathematics in particular, after their discovery, are sometimes thought of as having their origin in logic and reason. But it was the keen human imagination that brought them about: a grand interplay of intuition and playfullness. Ugly ideas are not permissible: only the most beautiful survive...and oddly, and most interestingly, it is these that usually seem to work the best, and transcend the context in which they were discovered.

5 out of 5 stars Psychological theory of beauty.......2001-03-26

In this book, Santayana rejects the Platonic conception of beauty is an intrinsic characteristic of a thing, and argues for beauty that exists only in the mind (and senses, hence the title) of the viewer. The pleasure that beauty gives its audience is universal, but what is beautiful is not universal across audiences. That may be old hat to us, but wasn't quite so old hat in his time. Santayana enumerates various types of beauty, and relates each to the pleasure it gives its audience. Santayana even claims that some of our other preferences -- for example, for youth over age -- are fundamentally aesthetic in nature.

The argument is Santayanaesque, and thus not exactly rigorous. A lot of the physiology ("Psychology is always physiological," he writes) is hokey to our "modern" medical minds. Some of the digressions seem to be just him taking the opportunity to say something clever, rather than advancing the main argument in any way.

Still, Santayana is a virtuoso of putting together large, complex "big think" arguments, and he writes subtly and beautifully. This book is worth it, even if only to see Santayana doing what he does best: arguing broadly and forcefully, this time for a new conception of aesthetics.

                                    Book Description

Each one of us enjoys deep relationships held together by an invisible cord called commitment, and every important community depends on the strength of that unseen cord. At times, we find it a joy to keep our commitments. At others, it seems difficult–even impossible–to honor those spoken and unspoken pledges.

If you deeply desire to make and keep commitments…

If you want insight into what makes relationships work–
or to learn what to do when a relationship is in crisis…

If you feel trapped by a bad commitment and wonder if you can
experience grace and a new beginning…

Best-selling author Lewis Smedes offers insights that will profoundly affect the way you interact with and relate to others. Find out what you and those you love can gain from committed relationships; discover how to cope when someone close to you breaks your trust; and determine which, if any, relationships should continue forever–as well as how you can make these relationships last–in Learning to Live the Love We Promise.

Of Richie's many excellent books, this is probably the best, and certainly one of the two or three best books about Japan andJapanese people today. A vision of Japan through precise, intimate portraits of ordinary and extraordinary Japanese people. A moving work that is both fine and great.
