Book Description
This extensive two-way exchange of letters between Rufus Robbins and members of his family provides a highly personalized view of the life of a Union soldier, as well as life on the home front in South Abington, Massachusetts, an important source of war materiel. Enlisting in the Seventh Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment at the seasoned age of 31, Rufus carefully crafts letters that are articulate, graphic, and often witty and that contribute much to our understanding of the daily course of the war. Notes from home reflect the Robbins family's ever-present worry and concern for Rufus' well-being. His brothers detail their involvement in the sewing of army boots, an activity for which South Abington held a large contract. As a confirmed Universalist, Rufus struggled to live a life of faith in the midst of war. His letters demonstrate the depth of his character, showing both maturity and confidence. However, as the war continued, one sees his belief in the righteousness of the Union cause, his confidence in God, and his sometimes naive simplicity replaced with a more realistic form of idealism. In this collection, those interested in military affairs can learn about the economic workings of the camps, the recreational outlets for the soldiers, and the grim realities of the Peninsula Campaign, while scholars focussing on civilian life will gain a greater understanding of the impact of the war on the families and friends left behind.

A Personal Glimpse Into History.......2002-01-13
The composure of the novel breathes life into such a dramatic event of U.S. History. 'Through Ordinary Eyes' makes not only the war itself, but the surrounding aspects of family life and personal hardships, understandable and reachable to its readers. Throughout history, war has been battlegrounds for the ordinary persons. This historical recap speaks from the life of not a highly positioned general, but only an average private. As a reader, we are allowed into the personal battle of one private while gaining an overall appreciation for the time and all that it encompasses. Wonderful depth and insight!
Through Ordinary Eyes, But Extraordinary Views.......2001-05-28
I have read many books dealing with the Civil War. This book is reminiscent of James MacPhearson's book Why We Fought.
The book is most revealing because not only does it provide primary sources (letters from a soldier to his family over a fifteen-month time span), but also it has response letters from his family, revealing the concerns, sacrifices and dedication of both those at the battles and those at home. It provides us with a window on military history and mid-nineteenth century society.

Excellent, fascinating study.......2000-04-02
Psychologically informed, but with no psychobabble -- respectful of James, and of other members of that famous family -- but not uncritical. This is a terrific biography, which deserves many readers.

Book Description
In this companion book to her successful Nonverbal Learning Disabilities at Home, Pamela Tanguay addresses issues related to the academic education of the child with NLD and related conditions. Topics such as school placement, program modifications, and social/emotional issues are covered, as well as specific teaching strategies, from how to deal with essay questions, to tips on helping the student master long division, and ideas for improving reading comprehension. The author defines and discusses concepts such as frontloading and a cooperative learning environment, and explains how they benefit the student with NLD and related conditions.

Excellent resource for parent's with an NLD child........2006-03-19
If you are struggling with how to help your NLD child, then this book will be an excellent resource. The author uses clear, concise illustrations to help the reader understand the disorder and more importantly, what it's like to be a kid with NLD.
Included are some very practical and easy to implement suggestions to help the NLD child with math and writing. We've used a couple of the suggestions and had incredible results. Not only did our son complete the work correctly, but his success with these tools made him realize that he can do the work; he just needs the material presented to him in a way that he can understand. The cost of the book
< $30...having your child realize they are capable...PRICELESS!
A wonderful place to start.......2005-08-05
As a school psychologist sometimes I need to have something from what to draw information - I have so much data and need words to define what I see. This book does a wonderful job of summarizing the types of behaviors and concerns that teachers bring to me. Being able to share this resource with them and draw from it as I attempt to assist parents and teachers with a student's learning profile is a joy. Thanks for all of the tremendous effort!
The light bulb goes on!.......2005-01-15
I am so happy with this book. It totally describes my daughter to a "T" and has been so helpful to me and all of her educators.
I always have it close at hand to refer to when we are struggling with homework or learning something new in school. I have taken all of the ideas on how to teach certain subjects, photocopied them and made a handy desk refrence for all of her teachers.
I also bought one for her school to have.
I wish though, that it had more insight on how to teach multiplication to these kids. This is one area that my 7th grader just can not get a handle on!
This book is great, it is easy to read, and it clearly tells the world that your child or student with NVld can learn everything if it is just taught the best way for them and the disability is all encompassing in their lives not just academically. The social issues are a huge part of it all!
Thank you so much for such a great refrence through every step of our lives!
Parents Will Succeed Where Teachers Won't.......2004-03-01
This text is wonderful for those who want to help give their children every possible advantage and potential possible.
Do not let the government schools take over, however. This manual is best used at home by loving parents and not by ADA pundits who care far more about their jobs than your precious little child. The schools get massive funding when they can label as many children as possible "disabled."
You will gain valuable insight into how to teach your child the best in this gem.
Great ideas for accommodations & modifications.......2003-04-26
This book has absolutely terrific ideas for how to modify and accommodate an NLD child at school. I have gotten papers from school, that my son did poorly on and then found the answers of how to modify the papers to make them do-able for my son (same work just presented in a way he can understand). Then I would show the teacher the idea(s). I have been doing this all year and have learned the majority of the accomodations and modifications I show the teacher are from this book. The teacher now incorporates these into all of my sons school work. This has decreased his frustration and improved his quality of scool work and learning. Would be a great book for a teacher that has an NLD child in her class.

The Real Italian Food Primer.......2000-05-15
This is absolutely the very best Italian cookbook I have ever seen. Each of the dishes is superb and explained in detail preparation steps. The idea of showing suggested menus works very well when you are trying to figure out what to serve with what. If you only know your basic Italian foods, then you are in for a treat. I have never failed to receive fine compliments from serving any of Lina's recipes. If you can have only one Italian cookbook, this is the one to have. These are truly authentic and expertly researched recipes. Congratulations to Lina for doing an excellent job!

Book Description
Available for the first time in paperback, The Knitting Sutra reveals how women can learn to knit their way to nirvana.
When Susan Gordon Lydon was coping with a broken arm, her craft took on new significance. While knitting was essential to strengthening her hands, it also provided her with a newfound sense of peace and creativity. Immersed in brilliant colors, textures, and images of beautiful sweaters, Lydon found healing and enlightenment in a way she had never imagined. Capturing this journey of discovery, The Knitting Sutra recounts her remarkable membership in a community of craftswomen around the world, from sweater makers in Scotland to Navajo weavers, and the adventures that her craft led her on.
As she masters new techniques and conquers old obstacles, Lydon’s story conveys how the lessons she learned from knitting, such as stillness and interdependence, later sustained her through a cancer diagnosis and even the incapacitation of her hands. The Knitting Sutra is both a meditation on craft and an affirmation for anyone seeking heartfelt comfort.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant and startlingly beautiful.......2007-06-10
Susan G. Lydon has written two brilliant and startlingly beautiful books. Parlaying her skills into a series of moving, insightful, humorous, loving and honest autobiographical vignettes, she has captured many emotions and corralled a wealth of feelings into a refreshing package, like a gift. Her work is also deceptively simple. A chapter begins with a thought about knitting and life, recalling the feelings present as one embarks on something new. At chapter's end, she hands us a completed project of sorts, shimmering with the pearls of wisdom she knit into our collective consciousness along the way. I was hoping for many more installments from her, but alas, she has passed on from the breast cancer with which she did battle in the pages of the second book. Seek out and read these.
great book for knitters and seekers.......2006-10-28
The books I've read on knitting and spirituality fall into two categories. Some are fluff, consisting mostly of nice stories that are enjoyable to read but lacking in real spiritual content. Others are extended essays on integrating knitting into a regular discipline of contemplation, very helpful but somewhat impersonal. In this book, a serious spiritual seeker tells her story in great depth, and how knitting has impacted her in her quest. I enjoyed it thoughourally and would recommend it to anyone who is a knitter and/or a spiritual seeker.
wonderful book worth a long look.......2006-02-18
a lovely fresh book full of knitting stories from the heart. A knitting book with no patterns that held my interest from page one. I really became involved in the life of this fascinating and surprising lady.
Renewed my reasons to knit again- balance and spirit.......2004-12-31
Busy and unbalanced are two words to describe my life lately. Knitting appeared again recently and then this pearl of a book. Susan successfully makes the link between heart, hands, and spirit...helping one in the course of reading and knitting to find balance and a sense of self within spirit again. Fabulous stories from Native American to Sufi, from the British Isles to Florida wetlands. I bought several copies for my knitting friends.
For everyone who knits, crochets, or sews with passion.......2004-08-25
This book moved me to tears. It expressed what I'd been grappling to understand since I started to crochet two years ago. This beautifully written, personal journey is truly insightful and moving.
I used to spurn womanly crafts such as sewing and knitting. But when I tried crochet two years ago I was immediately addicted. Somehow, this was what I had been searching for. I struggled to understand and express why I fell in love with crocheting. Finally I read this book and found my answer.
Crocheting has become my way of connecting with other women both past and present. There is an instant fellowship when you meet someone and find out that they knit, crochet or sew. Crochet has also become my means of creating something tangible and physical in this electronic world.
The author's stories of how women throughout the ages have put the heart and souls into their crafts were very moving and informative. I loved the story about the Guatemalan mother who when asked her greatest achievement pointed out her magnificent weavings and said "anyone can have children".
I also identified with Ms. Lydon's quest for mastery of knitting-- that feeling of wanting to be proficient at something challenging. "The Knitting Sutra" is about far more than knitting but it's hard to read it and not be inspired to try knitting or some other art or craft.
If you love any sort of handicraft and do it with passion then I heartily recommend this book.

Book Description
The flowering plants in your garden, and their variety of color and form, are the result of hundreds of years of tradition, science, skill and intrepid exploration. They may be native plants carefully selected to provide larger blooms or a greater color range, exotic species with origins in far-distant lands, or cultivars which have been painstakingly bred to conform to an ideal of shape and form.
The Gardener's Atlas explores the histories of many of the world's most popular cultivated plants and reveals how and where they grew in the wild. It relates extraordinary and uplifting tales of their discovery in some of the remotest regions on earth -- tales of determination and perseverance, of barter and exchange, and of international friendship struck up between enthusiastic horticulturists from the 1500s onward.
There are insights into how plants that are now simply decorative were once used for medicinal or cosmetic purposes, for food or ritual, and into how they earned their common or Latin names. This is a book which cannot fail to enrich your gardening experience.
Customer Reviews:
Provides a survey of the history of world flowers.......2003-10-07
Dr. John Grimshaw's Gardener's Atlas isn't your usual gardening guide: it provides a survey of the history of world flowers and foliage, charting where 20 plant families originated, how they spread around the world, and how they flourish today. With maps, botanical color prints and photos, and sidebars of information useful to plant breeders and avid gardeners alike, this is packed with information simply not seen elsewhere.
it could be a great book.......2000-10-15
It is a beautiful book with very interesting informations. I liked to know the history of many plants, but the autor doesnt't know almost anything about South American flowers. All the flora of Atlantic forest was forgotten. There is almost nothing about the great family of blomeliads and orchids. It could be a great book. . There is a book written by Loerenzi de Souza who has a great knowledge about brasilian flora, Harri Lorenzi (plantarum@plantarum.com. br) that could help the next edition.
A great botanical history.......2000-07-05
This is a great botanical history. I was impressed with the little vignettes of the great plant finders, many of whom lost their lives trying to find great new plants. I happened to be reading the book while driving through the Smokey Mountains and seeing the Lobelia cardinalis at the same time I was reading how the Queen of Spain named it because it was such a brilliant red it reminded her of a Cardinal's robe. If you love plants, you will love this book.
The book is orgainized roughly by plant family, which is fine. I was a bit annoyed that there were pictures of period gardens stuck everywhere throughout the book (in the middle of the plant family organization). Rather than being in the middle of the chapters, I think these wonderful pieces could have been between the chapters. Actually I was so interested in what I was reading, I didn't appreciate the also wonderful interuption.
By the way, I passed by a whole hillside of Tradescantia in the Smokey Mountains while reading about the Tradescants (father and son) who brought that great plant to Europe.
The only thing I would caution is that the book is great reading, but for history, not how to grow the plant in your garden, especially if you are in the US, since the author is from England and cultural requirements are not his strong point.
Congratulations.......2000-06-10
I think this is a very interesting book.
Book Description
Family aggression - whether in form of physical violence or verbal abuse - has touched most of us in our lifetime. Most of us have witnessed it, experienced it, or used it at one point or another. In order for us to eliminate aggressive and abusive behaviors from relationships, we must be willing to confront our own experiences with these behaviors.
Family Violence in the United States: Defining, Understanding, and Combating Abuse examines all types of family aggression. The book is designed to provoke readers into questioning assumptions, evaluating information, formulating hypotheses, and designing solutions to problems of family violence in the United States. Using an ecological framework, authors Denise A. Hines and Kathleen Malley-Morrison provide a thought-provoking and informative discussion not only of the most well-recognized forms of maltreatment in families, but also of less understood and more controversial issues such as husband abuse, parent abuse, and gay/lesbian abuse.
Key Features
- Includes full chapters on husband abuse and abuse in gay/lesbian relationships - topics scarcely covered in other texts
- Discusses "hidden forms" of family violence including wife rape, sibling abuse, parent abuse, and abuse of people with disabilities
- Uses real case studies to illustrate the concepts discussed and to provoke readers to think critically about issues in family violence
- Provides thought-provoking questions throughout the text to prompt readers to evaluate their own and othersâ notions of abuse and maltreatment
- Incorporates "Special Issues" sections to highlight new, and sometimes controversial, aspects of family violence
- Includes summary sections at the end of each chapter to serve as a useful study aid for students
- Concludes with a discussion of how we, as a society, are currently responding to the problem of family violence in the United States
Rich in scholarly references and case materials,
Family Violence in the United States is suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses on family violence in the fields of Family Studies, Sociology, Social Work, Womenâs Studies, Criminal Justice, Psychology, Counseling, and Nursing.
Book Description
"The writing style is engaging and the stories are compelling. Rather than presenting facts and statistics, the authors invite the reader to actively participate in current debates in the family violence research. . . .
Family Violence in a Cultural Perspective provides a new, interesting approach."
                                                  --Carolyn M. West,
University of Washington, Tacoma
"A major achievement in compilation and review, beautifully written. . . .This book accomplishes a necessary and admirable goal of bringing a widely dispersed body of knowledge together."
                                                                --Jean Giles-Sims,
Texas Christian University
What is maltreatment? How do definitions, causes, consequences, and efforts to combat problems vary across the major ethnic groups within the United States?
Family Violence in a Cultural Perspective: Defining, Understanding, and Combating Abuse provides a thought-provoking and informative discussion of cross-cultural issues in family violence in the United States.
The book focuses on family violence from four major ethnic populations of the United States: Native American Indian, African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Asian American. Authors Kathleen Malley-Morrison and Denise A. Hines examine violence in these communities and take an ecological approach to its incidences, correlations, and consequences. The information and cases in
Family Violence in a Cultural Perspective are organized within a cognitive-affective-ecological framework, allowing readers to consider the many causes of family violence. The book looks at the different types of family violence including child, spousal, and elder abuse and addresses the broader historical and environmental forces contributing to violence within different communities.
Features and Benefits:
- Real family case studies and "Personal Reflections" boxes from members of various ethnic communities covered in the book stimulate class discussion.
- Each chapter contains frequent mini-summaries of the material presented and "thought questions" that help readers reflect upon the difficult issues being addressed.
- The book includes tables summarizing research on the rate of family violence within major ethnic groups and key terms are highlighted within the text.
- Each chapter opens with provocative quotes or examples and closes with a summary section.
Family Violence in a Cultural Perspective is designed for undergraduate and graduate students taking family violence courses in Family Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, and Human Services. This book is also a vital resource for professionals and practitioners working with diverse client populations.

Book Description
The last volumes in the series of William Blake's Illuminated Books reveal the writer and artist as a prophet driven by a sense of apocalyptic urgency. Blake conceived and executed The Continental Prophecies and The Urizen Books in the early 1790s, capturing the intellectual and spiritual turmoil of the American and French revolutions. Here, for the first time, the general reader will encounter Blake's most intense vision in reproductions that do justice to the originals, accompanied by texts, comprehensive notes and commentaries, and detailed interpretations of the designs.
The Urizen Books, made up of "Urizen," "The Book of Los," and "Ahania," describes the dissemination of the autocratic mythology of Urizen, Blake's inflexibly rationalist and myopic law-giver. These books stand as the author's sensible and considered response to the events of his time. The illuminated text of "Urizen" and the ten full-page illustrations from copy D in the British Museum, never before reproduced, represent a tour de force in Blake's specialist process of color printing.
These volumes complete the six-part series of William Blake's Illuminated Books, including Jerusalem, Songs of Innocence and of Experience, The Early Illuminated Books, and Milton, A Poem, all published by Princeton University Press.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful images, great helps for the general reader.......2004-02-02
These three works in some ways develop the characters Blake used in the three Continental Prophecies. But don't expect any kind of coherent development or to be able to fathom out any kind of understandable timeline. This is Blake after all. Most of this book is helpful introduction, commentary, notes, and supplementary materials.
"The First Book of Urizen" is the longest of the three and the most illustrated. It has images that are absolutely unforgettable. They have a power and emotional impact that holds the viewer. I have met people who find them repulsive. I think the emotional impact makes them uncomfortable so they want to get away from the images and so push them away.
"The Book of Ahania" and "The Book of Los" are much shorter and the illustrations are limited to the title page and the last plate ("The Book of Los" also has an illustration on the opening page of text.). The other pages are done in particularly fine Blake script.
As with the rest of the volumes in this series the quality of reproduction is very high and these images are delightful to study. The scholarship is quite good and the writing is focused on opening these works up to the general reader - at least a general reader who enjoys studying Blake and is willing to put in the time it takes to fathom these rather wonderfully strange works. A treasure for the shelf of any Blake lover.
A must have!.......2000-09-27
I recommend that any fan of William Blake buy this volume and the other 5 in the series. The books are beautiful, large, and handsomely bound. Each book is reproduced in full color, using a six-color printing process rather than the standard four. The pages are heavy, opaque and have a gorgous lustre indicating very high quality paper. The text of each book accompanies the color reproductions in standard typeface with very competent commentary to boot.

Book Description
For thousands of years humans have adorned themselves. Adornment figures among the constellation of traits that signify the arrival of modern human behavior in the archaeological record. Wherever they ventured, wherever they lived, people have made art and adornments to accompany them in life and death.
In this book, artist William Morris celebrates this ancient and universal human quality and continues his exploration of the themes of origin and myth that permeate all his work. At first glance, these glass sculptures signal a striking departure from Morris's oeuvre of canopic jars, animal vessels, assorted artifacts, and imaginative burial installations. Here Morris depicts the people only imagined before. He has put flesh on the bones, and covered the bodies with costumes, jewelry, headdresses, and tattoos. These figures spring forth full of vibrant life in the present, rather than recalling a distant past. The faces and artifacts evoke and sometimes blend elements of Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas, tracing the global migrations of distant ancestors. Morris aims less for realism than for an essence of ethnicity.
For more than 20 years, in a career that has brought Morris to the forefront of the modern Studio Glass movement, he has perfected a repertoire of techniques that virtually no other American glass artist can equal.
Book Description
Here's a delightful collection of G. K. Chesterton quotes from 1900 to 1911, one for each day of the year--all selected by Chesterton himself. Every word of his 1912 classic is in this newly typeset edition. There are also newly created notes shedding light on events from his day that have been dimmed by the passage of time. In addition, there is a bibliography of sources and a detailed 17-page index to guide you to the quotes you need. Finally, there are several humorous sketches by Chesterton.
This book was previously published in the U.K. in 1911 as A Chesterton Calendar and in the U.S. in 1912 as The Wit and Wisdom of G. K. Chesterton. It includes Chapter 13, "The Movable Feasts," which was left out of the U.S. edition.
Customer Reviews:
The quotes were selected by Chesterton himself, so they represent what he thought was important........2007-01-17
This book serves two purposes. It is intended to be a daily devotional (like Oswald Chambers "My Utmost For His Highest"), focusing on G. K. Chesterton's wit and wisdom. The quotes were selected by Chesterton himself, so they represent what he thought was important, as opposed to reading another person's second-guessings.
One good point is that it has moveable feasts in an appendix, like Lewis's "The Business of Heaven." A down point is that the book lacks an entry for Leap Day. This is a common mistake made by all devotionals I own, except for Chambers's. If you are smart enough to include the Roman Catholic feast days (which you would expect from Chesterton), then why can't you remember Leap Day? It is beyond me!
The second purpose of the book is an unintentional one. This book serves as a de-facto quote book. I love quote books, since they serve as random sampler for a person's thought. C. S. Lewis said, "The only use of selections is to deter those readers who will never appreciate the original, and thus save them from wasting their time on it, and to send all the others on the original as quickly as possible." (The Quotable Lewis, #447)
This book accomplishes both: it is a wonderful daily devotional, and it whets the appetite for more.
G.K Chesterton.......2006-03-15
I bought this book for my grandmother and she loves it. It's hard for her to sit and read for a lond piriod of time. This book is nice because it has one little reading for every day. I would highly recomend this book.

Book Description
One of Blake's most interesting and powerful creations — a parody of the book of Genesis in which the righteous figure of God is replaced by that of Urizen, the "dark power." Included are 27 hand-colored plates rich in energy and monumental grandeur, along with a printed transcription of the poem.
Customer Reviews:
Blake's universal origins similar to those of Gnostics.......1999-10-14
Anyone else notice the parallels between Blake's illuminated text and the universal origins described in the recently uncovered scrolls contained in the Nag Hammadi Library, the ones that are the oldest origional records of the words of Jesus Christ in the Secret Book of James? From the ignorant splitting from the undescribable origional of the lesser and jealous "God" (arguably the Old Testament's Jehova) to the metaphor of the chain, it seems as if they could be mirror images. The interesting part is that the Nag Hammadi library was discovered in 1947- the same year the Dead Sea Scrolls were found-- and has been dated back to approximately 50 AD. Almost all other Gnostic writings had long been destroyed by the early Church. Read into this what you may, but Blake most probably never read this particular text. Personally, I take this as proof of at least authenticity, and moreover that Blake was in greater alignment, more like Christ, if you will, than most humans so far. I bet he could make a killer salad.
Incredible depiction of the rise of the human body.......1999-05-07
Blake's "The [First] Book of Urizen" is an incredible poetical and visual depiction of the rise of the flesh and the implications of being bound to our bodies. Particulalry interesting because the book manages to depict an occurance that, according to Blake himself, is impossible to describe. The use of the metaphorical tool of a mythology by the book comes as close as one could expect from a peice of writing to achieving this depiction (the rest, appropriately enough, is up to our imagination). It is this undertaking of what seems to be an impossible task (that of attempting to represent the metaphysical through the physical) that shows this poem's bravery.
Excellent reproduction of color plates and text.......1998-06-24
A small book but of good value. Very useful to see the full color plates that Blake had designed along with the text. The combination of the two increased my enjoyment of the work. The poetry is a bit obtuse and requires multiple readings to really extract what Blake was saying.

Book Description
The artistic genius of William Blake (1757-1827) found expression in both graphic works and visionary poetic writings. Among Blake's most masterful productions are books that combined these forms, which he personally engraved and printed using a technique of his own devising. These works were hand-colored by Blake as individual copies were sold, often years or even decades after their original conception, and consequently each surviving copy reflects a unique aspect of Blake's creativity.
The Book of Urizen was originally engraved in 1794 as The First Book of Urizen, for a projected series of works expressing Blake's idiosyncratic cosmogony. Only a handful of copies are known to have been completed, and only one of these was executed later in the artist's career (ca. 1818). That copy, reproduced with unequaled detail and accuracy in this Octavo Edition, uses masterly techniques of coloring to produce in many instances what are virtually original paintings, highlighted in liquid gold. Blake's painstaking technique transforms the relatively flat picture surface of the original engravings into a dazzling epic in miniature that combines his bardic verse with otherworldly imagery to recount as never before the origins of human experience.
Commentary by Nicolas Barker, searchable transcription.
