I couldn't put it down!.......2004-03-20
This is truly a sweet love story, filled with the history of the day-to-day life of a soldier preparing for war and trying to maintain a "real" life--in his own words. It brings to life a time of innocence that is long past. I laughed and cried and thouroughly enjoyed this read.

only for botanist.......2007-02-25
I found this book totaly usless for my purposes. The drawings were useless, and descriptions would help no one in the outdoors other than those persons already familiar with the plants. The entire book (for me at least) was totally self serving for the writer & the editors view. not recommened. Try "Living Off The Land" by McNabb.
An Encyclopedia, best used as a cross reference........2005-05-14
This book is what it says it is, an encyclopedia. It provides very detailed descriptions on a very large database of plants. It would be close to impossible to use alone as a means of identifying plants in the field, so it is best used as a cross reference to a field guide. Recommended field guides would be "A Field Guide to Edible Wild Plants: Eastern and Central North America" by the Petersons, and "Edible and Medicinal Plants of the West", By Gregory L. Tilford for the western region. I have all three of these, and use the two field guides for identification purposes, and the Encyclopedia for verification and usage.
unbelievable.......2002-06-07
Although it lacks color pictures, it is by far the most complete listing of edible plants that I've ever seen (over 4000 plants covered) and tells you how to identify and use EVERY part of a plant from the Flower to the Leaf to the Bark to the Root (and any other part that may be usable) If your into long term survival or just want a snack on the trail, this book has it covered.
The Encyclopedia of Edible Plants of North America.......2001-03-01
The Encyclopedia of Edible Plants of North America, by Francois Couplan, Ph.D. is "a reference for all people interested in learning about the numerous opportunities nature offers us in the form of healthful, intriguing, often delicious vegetables and fruits that we do not have to grow to enjoy."
Couplan provides information for approximately 4000 varieties of wild plants, much of it based on his personal experience.
An ethnobotanist, Couplan began writing his Encyclopedia 25 years ago. During that time he traveled extensively, spending "a lot of time in the woods with very little in my backpack, finding my food in the plants I gathered." He took copious notes and presented "wild gastronomy" workshops, while also continuing his academic research and studies.
Plants are listed by their Latin names, however the index includes the common names.
Information for each plant includes a rating of how edible it is, how abundant it is, and where it grows. Etymology of most names are provided also; thus readers learn that dandelion comes from the French words for lion's tooth, because of the shape of the leaves.
Couplan describes how to prepare edible parts of the plant, and how they taste. He also discusses the nutritive values and medicinal properties of each plant. Where relevant, he provides information on other uses, such as dyes, soaps, and basketry. Endangered species are noted. The book does not include illustrations and is not intended for use as an identification manual.
Anyone who has ever wondered if a particular plant could be eaten, or how to harvest and prepare it, will find The Encyclopedia of Edible Plants of North America informative and interesting. People wishing to add a little variety to their diet will find lots of suggestions, and those who use plants for healing will appreciate the medicinal details.
Good, but NOT a field guide.......1999-06-11
This book is big and almost too thorough. It really is like an encyclopedia. It includes lots of plants which are only marginally edible and hard to find. On the other hand, you will have a hard time finding an edible plant out there that is not listed. There are some illustrations, but they are not useful for identifying the plants -- you will definitely need a field guide if you are just getting started and don't know much about identification. The book is interspersed with historical information and anecdotes which add a lot to the whole picture of a plant, as well as making it a bit easier to remember. This book is best read in tandem with another book that takes the topic from a different perspective.
Book Description
The southern region of the United States is a stunning landscape of smoky mountains, undulating hills, scrubby coastal plains, mysterious swamps, subtropical shorelines and alluvial flatlands. More than 60 million Americans call the South home; the result is an ethnic stewpot that has been simmering for centuries, rendering a population as spicy as anything a Cajun might conjure. The rich cuisine of the South has benefited from such a merging of cultural traditions: Louisiana Creole cooking alone owes its heritage to a blend of African, French, Spanish, Caribbean and native American ingredients and techniques.
The South the Beautiful Cookbook showcases the great diversity of Southern cooking and reveals that the food of the South is far more than fried chicken and mashed potatoes. With over 200 recipes by author Mara Reid Rogers and a star-studded list of contributing chefs and Southern food authorities, The South the Beautiful Cookbook provides the quintessential Southern food experience from the traditional to the cutting edge. Old favorites -- Seafood Gumbo, aromatic Smoked Barbecue Ribs, spicy Jambalaya and Granny Lou's Coconut Cake -- fill the Southern table alongside innovative creations like Cream of Shiitake Soup with Virginia Ham, Roasted Squab on Sweet Potato Spoon Bread, Cheese Grits Souffle, and Chocolate Pecan Pie. All these delicious recipes are illustrated in full-color photographs by Philip Salaverry.
Award-winning journalist Jim Auchmutey writes a lyrical and informative text about the cultural and culinary history of the South, which is brought to life in the full-color photography by two leading National Geographic photographers, Melissa Farlow and Randy Olson, who traveled from Virginia to Florida to document the South.
Together this team of contributors, with the expertise of Southern food writer and editor Susan Puckett, creates a portrait of Southern hospitality and charm. Southerners have expressed their distinctive culture in many ways, from their music to their stories, but no expression strikes closer to the heart than the great folk art of Southern cooking.

It's ok.......2006-12-25
The cookbook is ok... I enjoyed some of the other books in the series, such as the Provence one. This could be because the French books seem more exotic, i.e. me not being from France and all. The book gets three stars as it has good recipes and poritions, just didn't strike me the same was as others in the series.
A new favorite! True to the South........2005-03-28
Ever since I gave my mom the Tuscany Beautiful Cookbook years ago, she has been requesting one each year from the series. This Christmas I gave her the South, first one from the States for her collection. My parents had just returned from their travels through the South, so I knew this would be a hit given the love she has for it. When she received the package from Amazon, she said she tore it open & sat outside and read through the entire book right where the delivery box landed. The pictures took her right back to the South & the recipes are all true to the area. She now displays The South book instead of the Tuscany one, giving it a break for a while I guess. Apparently this book does not disappoint!
It ain't low fat, but it sure is good..........2003-05-08
As an Asian-American southerner addicted to cookbooks, I am impressed! This cookbook is terrifically illustrated and the recipes are good and authentic. As with all the cookbooks in this series, the books leans towards the elegant, with an emphasis on restaurant-type meals. Very impressive for a date! I wish it had a section on soul food, though.
The is the best cookbook ever!.......2000-08-10
I love this cookbook. The recipies are relatively easy to prepare, but once the food is done it is worth the wait. All of the recipies are absoultely delicious. This cookbook is a must have, for anyone who like southern food.
The Best Southern Cookbook Around!.......2000-08-10
I am so pleased with this cookbook. All of the recipies in this book are absoultely delicious. For anyone who loves southern food, this book is a must have!

From the intelligent pages of Threads come 33 articles on essential sewing skills that originally appeared in the "Basics" column of the magazine. Each section, by an expert contributor, focuses on one specific aspect, beginning with pre-sewing considerations like pattern layout and cutting, followed by the particulars of sewing notions and how to use them. The final chapter shows how to achieve success with various types of seams, insert a zipper, build darts and pleats, make bias strips, and more. Many sewing books presuppose an existing skill level; this one carefully demonstrates just how to build that skill. --Amy Handy

Customer Reviews:
If you're new to sewing - get this book.......2007-03-30
An excellent book for people learning to sew. With good illustrations and step by step instructions, it made a lot of things very clear to me.
Put simply - I found this book to be an essential guide in aiding me in doing things correctly. The ABCs of sewing.
"Sew Nice...".......2006-11-08
I purchased this book to use as a "text book" for a beginning sewing class I was teaching. I was very pleased with the book and my students purchased it also after using my copy during class. It has exactly what I wanted for them: clear and concise directions with good pictures for technique illustrations.
Sewing With Confidence Book.......2006-08-15
I found the book basic, and that is why I ordered it. It is a fine book for back-to-sewing people like me.
Great for beginners & teaching beginners.......2005-08-27
Good for beginners, especially distractable students. The pages are not too full of information and the type is larger instead of smaller which is good for children. It includes color, which appeals to kids, without going overboard. After a child/beginner has gained basics, then a more detailed book is definitely good to "graduate to."
This would not necessarily be a reference book. Once the skills are learned, a person might move it off their shelf.
I feel a 4th grade student would understand most of the info and need help with understanding some of the techniques.
I learned a few new techniques from it. (I teach sewing) I am recommending this book to my students, along with other real good reference type sewing books.
"Tailor tacks" is illustrated better than what I have seen so far. I found "Directional Sewing" to be very informational!
"Understitching" is also very well explained.
It's a guide for further reading.......2005-01-17
This book contains reprints of articles on sewing. Each article is only 2 or 3 pages long, and that includes one or more photos or illustrations, so the result is not too much detail. Use this text as a guidebook--if you cannot grasp a particular skill--by reading this book--look elsewhere for more info., more detail, more illustrations--you'll know what to look for. Further, each writer is telling you how they do it. Yes, there alternatives to their way--like using a ruler and a "French Curve" when tracing patterns; you can buy some "bias tape" or you can make your own--stuff like that can only be gotten by reading everything you can get your hands on! That's if you had no one to show you how to sew.

Book Description
Most parents know that what a teen says isn't always what he or she means. But few understand that what a parent says and what a teen hears are also two very different things. Here, two sixteen-year-olds present typical dialogues between parents and teens-and then translate them.
Now parents can find out why, even though they think they're being helpful, they're suddenly getting the silent treatment-and how changing just a few words can make a world of difference. Inside are sections on money, personal privacy, academic pressure, siblings, drugs, clothing, and how to become more involved without becoming overbearing. Decoding each other's languages can build a bridge between parent and child-and create a bond that lasts long after the turmoil of the teen years is over.
Customer Reviews:
Are you KIDDING me?.......2007-02-26
First off, let me quantify my review of this rubbish by stating a few facts. I'm 33 years old, and my wife, 30 is a high school teacher. I have an 8 month old daughter. Now...that being said.. you parents rating this above 3 stars are the reason why teenagers have become so disrespectful and completely out of control in todays society. These girls exemplify perfectly the sense of entitlement that today's youth have. Your kids are no doubt the ones who have Myspace pages you know nothing about, on which they have pictures of themselves doing one or all of the following: dancing half naked, drinking, smoking pot, etc...etc...
35% of the students in my wifes district have some sort of alleged learning disability. Its called lazyness in most teachers opinions.
The stories that my wife tells me on a daily basis on what these kids do and say in the classroom is appalling. The train of thought that these girls have and many parents are accepting, is creating a bunch of disrespectful kids that don't understand what rules and boundaries are.
Like the girls say...they are LEARNING to be adults. Parents create rules and boundaries in order to help them learn. I have no problem with talking to child in an intelligent and grown up way...BUT, these girls give examples that are exaggerations of the real world, and again are just designed to favor what they are pushing. I agree there is a balance to be struck between freedom, discipline, and respect on both sides, but these girls OBVIOUSLY have written a book that favors them...and treats the parents like the children. I think the parents that like this book do so because many of them would just rather avoid confrontation, than being a strong authority figure that their kids truely need. Just because you are the authority figure, set rules, and demand respect, doesn't mean your kids will hate you. Just be fair, thats all. Thats the way my parents were with me, and now that i'm older it allll makes sense.
Don't believe me? Look up your kids Myspace and tell me what you find. What you find may in fact just horrify you.
Parents - you're not listening (that is, reading) carefully.......2006-03-31
When your teen mumbles something rude under his or her breath while walking away, the authors advise you to let it go "for the moment." Wait and make the point (just one at a time, please) when you are both calmer. Chances are, you will be heard and get a real apology, not a perfunctory one. If you have to have the last word in a situation where defenses are up, you and your teen will be doing the verbal equivalent of rolling around on the floor pulling each other's hair. Self-control and reasonableness can be taught by example better than by force.
Definitely written by teens.............2005-09-30
While it's good to see a teenager's side of situations and conversations, this book was pretty one-sided. This book addresses what a parent should say and how they should say it in order not to upset the teenager. When I was done with reading it, while getting some good pointers, I felt as though I would have to walk on eggshells with everything I said to my teen AND if they called me a "bitch" or a "psycho" I would have to ignore that and ask myself why I incited them or brought on this disrespect. Read this with a grain of salt, knowing that two high school teenagers wrote it. I commend them though for taking the tremendous amount of time and work to write this book. I just wish it would've addressed BOTH sides of the issue!
Surprisingly good.......2005-09-28
Okay, this book would probably get a "four star" review, but I'm so impressed that two high school girls wrote it, I can't help myself. This book is surprisingly thorough in the different scenarios it plays out.
My only complaint is that the situations and remedies are sometimes absurdly "pro-teen." For example, teenagers are dreadfully insulting to their parents in the sample dialogues, calling them "bitch" or "psycho" routinely, and the authors (amazingly!) advise softballing these problems so they don't get worse.
Other than that, nicely done, ladies.
Useful perspective.......2005-09-24
Although the book is clearly written from the perspective of the teen, I found it helpful to read how teens perceive the words parents say. I don't know if I or any parent would follow all their advice (I am sure my teen would like me to), but it gives a parent ideas to consider.

A good biography.......2005-06-09
This is a good biography of one of the most fascinating individuals in world history. The book is a look at Nobunaga's life from beginning to end, but the majority of the text is focused on his quest for ultimate power in Japan. The author gives a comprehensive view of Nobunaga's reign, covering cultural aspects as well as the obvious military and political developments. Although it can be rather dry at some times, the style this book is written in provides an easy read.
Everything you want to know about Oda Nobunaga........2002-06-26
If you're a student of Asian history or Japanese studies, you might consider reading this book. It's easy to read and I think it's a very complete description of the life of Oda Nobunaga and his deeds.
