A Southern Lawman Of Vast Proportions........2006-09-15
Buford Pusser was killed on August 12 in an ambush in McNairy County after another had caused his patrolcar to run off the road, killing his wife. He left behind a little daughter. He was truly a real American hero who ruled his county with an iron fist, interpreting the law to please his manner of enforcing it, as seen in the film starring Brian Dennehy as the sheriff and Ken Howard as the villain.
This movie started out an an episode of "Dukes of Hazzard" with the police chasing an orange vehicle, only this was a Vols van full of drunk teenagers. It leads Sheriff Burford Pusser and two of his deputies on a chase around the curby narrow roads of McNairy County, Tennessee. When finally stopped, they found two boys dead and two girls blinded by poison liquor they bought at Danny's bar in Selmer. It was home-brewed rotgut moonshine. Buford carreid a big stick which he used to destroy their cache of bottles of spirits, and was disliked by his Gestapo tactics. He believed in using a violent manner of taking the law in his own hands, by destroying a private business. They called it vigalante justice with an illegal search. Buford, it's said, has no common sense and goes off half-cocked. His motivation was in question as he appeared not to respect the law.
He was pushed into using crazy old laws to show them the importance of obeying the law, such as arresting all the old ladies playing bingo because it was illegal gambling they had been doing for twenty years. He alienating Danny, owner of the bar, in front of a crowd, destroying his personal belongings to humiliate him, using an obsolete law of 1907. He ticketed the judge's car because of the law stating that between 1888 and 1906, all motor vehicles are horseless carriages. Danny had a vendetta against the sheriff: "I started this and am going to finish it."
The holier-than-thou church women tried to force Buford to do something about an ex-con female who had returned to her homeplace. "I was born here -- no other place to go," she told Buford. She had been spurned at the church and the grocery store, so Buford stepped in and took her to the community dance.
After Buford had confronted Danny, his enemy, both involved in a brutal beating, he almost drowned Danny by kicking him off the bridge into shallow water. The sherrif walked into the trap Danny set for him and was shot, but his self-preservation aided in his living to be ambushed again, proving his courage. And studpidity. They had good vocal coaches, as they everyone had an authentic Tennessee accent, something hard to do if you don't live here.
The song Don Williams sang at the beginning and end of this real story sounded like one of the Appalachian ballads they sang at t he Bristol Sessions and in the Mountains of East Tennessee.

Book Description
The second book in the series following on from the bestselling Rainforest AdventuresChildren are fascinated with the natural world around them and with facts and information about animals that they have never seen. However often good nature programmes on T.V. or articles in magazines centre on evolution and completely ignore the Creator. Each story has a Bible verse and lesson for the reader to take away. Written by someone who spent his life in the Rainforest this book has the added benefit of being written by someone who has been there lived there and experienced the culture not just someone who has read the encyclopaedias.

The Child behind the Man.......2000-06-07
Watching the film 'Shadowlands', or seeing the play of the same name, gives you the impression that Lewis was remote and awkward around people.
Reading this fine youth biography shows you that underneath he had an innate sense of wonder that was stifled by his upbringing and work. It found an outlet in his books for children and camaraderie with the 'Inkspots'.
This is a revealing biography because it is written for young people. A suitable vehicle for finding out about the author of the Narnia Chronicles! I found it much less precious than other books on Lewis - probably because this was written by a fellow native Northern Irishman, rather than a fan.
It also wrecks several pompous academic careers by including a letter from Lewis to a young girl, explaining what each of the Narnia books is about.
Moving, heartwarming and fun.

Customer Reviews:
GREAT BUY!.......2007-01-22
I have purchased several raw food "cook" books recently, as my family and I are transitioning to a raw diet. This is one of my very favorites. There is a HUGE variety of recipes and some great tips. I also love that there is a resource guide in the back of the book. This resource is a great asset, seeing as raw food is still so rare in the US. This book gives my family and I a great variety of wonderful new foods to try! I highly recommend this book for any beginning raw fooders.
I hate to say it but..........2006-10-29
This book has a number of errors on its recipes. Like a recipe for pesto that calls for a 1/4 cup of sea salt when there is no way any human could eat it that salty. Or How about a recipe for raw sausage that doesn't even mention a dehydrator, when we made it the final product was a dense liquid? Try forming that into a patty??! This is a book compiled of the recipes of a number of people. Each recipe has credits for the source. Some of the recipes are very good, and have even become staples around my house. Some seem as if they came off the top of someones head and never were even tried. It is very frustrating to go out and buy groceries for a special recipe only to find them all wasted because the recipe doesn't even work. I mean not even close. This is a small percentage of the recipes in this book, but it still sucks. If you are on a raw food diet, it's not like you can just say "oh well" and head out for pizza! Send a message and buy a more researched and reliable book.
50 Recipes, One Month.......2006-01-26
I prepared and ate food from this book only for one month and was for the most part satisfied. Some of the 50 recipes I tried were redundant and others ranged from inedible to fantastic. I didn't become emaciated, lost maybe 6 pounds which is fine, because I'm a little overweight. I also wasn't hungry and my cravings for cooked food minimal. This experiment has certainly led me to incorporate more raw foods into my diet. Anything that calls for honey can easily be substituted with agave nectar. You don't need to have all the top-notch equipment listed, I used a cheap food processor, ordinary blender and a used Ronco dehydrator I got for free. Admittedly, most of this is very labour intensive.
Karyn's Tomato and Pea Salad (63)- Crunch, light and good. I would use less Bragg's.
Lentil Salad (63)- Pretty good.
Quinoa Tabouli (68)- Great in small quantities because the flavour is so potent.
I Can't Believe It's Not Waldorf Salad (79)- Quite good, but not spectacular.
Butternut Squash Soup (95)- Pretty good, but bland. I used ½ the amount of water for desired consistency.
Carrot/Orange/Pumpkin Soup (95)- Good, I used fresh onion and garlic instead of powdered. The recipe didn't include a liquid, so I added two cups of water.
Ants in a Canoe (110)- Almost as good as Ants on a Log.
Ants on a Log (110)- A person could easily live off of this!
Mesquite Melts (124)- Absolutely terrible. The texture is very unpleasant.
Spring Rolls (131)- Good, can be almost anything wrapped in anything.
Corn Torillas (169)- very good, they've got some kick. Nothing like tortillas though.
Jameth and Kim's Original Flax Crackers (168)- Good, easy and flexible.
Sweet Golden Crackers (176)- Not so good, but edible.
Barbecue Chips (177)-Okay, just don't add too much cayenne and skip the beat.
Almond Milk (182)-Tied with hazelnut for the best milk I ever had.
Almost, Hazel, or Sunflower Milk (184)- Can be done with pretty much any nut or seed. I used soy and added maple syrup and vanilla. Strain it in a cheesecloth.
Quickest Tahini Milk (186)- So, so terrible.
Banana Bites (193)- Good, but no very exciting.
Granola/Grawnola (194)- Made a combination of these two recipes and it is wonderful, takes a long time though, so make a lot.
Spiced Strawberry Granola Crunch (197)- Very tasty, would be better with less allspice because it's pretty overpowering.
Viktoras' Secret Raw Horamola (198)- Terribly bland.
Italian Rawsage (202)- Very very filling and pretty good.
Italian Style Zucchini Pasta Pesto (202)- NEVER put 1/4 cup of salt, I put 1/8 and it was still not edible.
Mock Spaghetti (205)- Okay, but boring.
Avocado Burritos (208)- Very boring and way too many tomatoes.
Chinese Wild Rice with Tender Vegetables (217)- Good but I would use less ginger.
Chow Mein Memory (218)- Wonderful! I would add more tamari.
Curried Kofka Ball in Cashew Tomatoes Curry Sauce (219)- One of the best recipes in the book, especially the sauce. I upped the spices a lot.
Easy Sushi (221)- Fast, easy, good and flexible.
Roast Tofu with Satay Sauce (223)- Good and simple. Don't overhydrate mushrooms. I added ½ can of coconut milk, some garlic and some chile pepper to the sauce.
Falafels (220)-SUPER! Just as good or better than traditional falafels.
Live Gardenburgers (232)- Delicious. Next time I will add garlic.
Neat Balls (234)-Really good, but again, better with garlic.
Pecan Almond Stuffed Mushrooms (237)- Pretty Bland so spice at will. Cut pate recipe in half or you will run out of mushrooms.
Spinach and Potato Latkes (241)- Just awful. I like spinach, but this has a fishy taste.
Sun Garden Burgers (242)- Really good, mild flavour. Easy and fast, makes 14 large patties.
Thai Crane's Nest in Coconut Curry (244)-Tastes pretty ok, but I was unable to form nests because they fell apart.
What's for Dinner Loaf (247)- Very good! I made them into patties and dehydrated until crisp on the outside.
Carrot and Tomato Spread (250)- Okay, but bland.
Miso Mayo (254)- Good, but a very strong miso flavour.
White Sauce/ Salad Dressing (270)- Not more than ok.
Guacamole (274)- Pretty great.
Pine Nut Sour Cream (276)- Good Base for any dip.
Ranch Dip or Dressing (276)- Easy, fast and super yummy.
Raw Hummus (277)-Pretty good, not spectacular.
Salsa Fresca (278)- Good and fresh tasting.
Tahitian Almond Dipping Sauce (278)- Really, really wonderful.
Raw Candy (295)- Good, but not at all like chocolate as the book would suggest.
Whip the Mister (327)- Yum! Mix with 50% frozen almond milk.
Nancy.......2005-12-09
I loved this book!!!! The recipes are exciting and different from the other raw books I have and I look forward to trying them out.
I like the fact that you get a variety of recipes from a variety of 'chefs' and that they range from simple to gourmet.
This book is a must for the raw-foodist's collection of 'uncook' books.
Only if you don't have access to the internet.......2005-09-19
This book was actually the worst and the best that I've gotten so far. It's divided into three sections. The first is a sort of guide to raw. I really liked this section because it had an in depth explanation of how to sprout things. There was also a good dehydration chart and a wonderful explanation of the various appliances needed. I didn't like the juicing overkill...but that's personal. That said, all of this info can be found on the web. The second part is full of recipes. They are, for the most part, awful. The ingredient lists are a mile long and the prep and lead times are beyond hellish. The last part wasn't needed. Anyone with access to the internet could find this info.
Book Description
Those who love Japanese food know there is more to it than sukiyaki, tempura, and sushi. A variety of miso-based soups, one-pot cooking (nabemono), and vegetable side dishes with sweet vinegar dressing (sunomono) are just a few of the traditional dishes that are attracting many interested in Asian cooking. Homma presents an intriguing mixture of Japanese country cooking, folk tradition, and memories of growing up in Japan. Cooking methods include techniques for chopping vegetables, making udon and soba noodles, making tofu and using various tofu products, and making rich soup stocks. This is a book to use and treasure for its traditional Japanese cooking methods.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful book, but not what I expected.......2006-11-10
This is an impressively laid out book, with excellent photos and text about Japanese folk cooking. I find myself rarely using it, though, because to me the indexing and arrangement of the various types of dishes is a bit confusing and not so user friendly. Also, there are many ingredients that are hard to find (at least in Cincinnati). I suppose, though, that for those who are serious about authentic Japanese cooking, it is a very valuable source. It does offer many types of recipes, not just sushi, which I'm not that fond of. To me raw seafood might taste okay raw, but it's even better steamed or broiled.
INTERESTING COOKBOOK, OK RECIPES.......2006-09-22
Mr. Homma does a great job of describing traditional japanese rural cooking in his book. His style of writing is informal and friendly and gives one the impression that he really enjoys cooking. The only problem that I had with this book is that the recipes seem to be either hit or miss. Some are quite good while others don't seem to work out as well.
Practical & delicious.......2006-07-12
I've almost worn out my copy, & have recommended it to everyone I know who is interested in down-to-earth, country-style Japanese food. Not only does the author give ingredients & quantities, he explains why & how various cooking techniques evolved. You won't find the usual Japanese restaurant favorites, but there are other books for those. The breakfast ideas & recipes alone make this worth reading -- a great alternative to eggs-toast-bacon-cereal.
One minor quibble, which may have been remedied in this edition: the indexing & general organization of the book are a bit tricky. Dishes are usually listed by their Japanese names, or by their method of cooking, & the page number references in the index are not always reliable. So get a pack of Post-It notes or some bookmarks (my copy is full of them), but by all means get this book.
A true understanding of Japanese Cuisine.......2006-02-17
I am so glad to see this book back in print. I bought mine at Powell's here in Portland OR back in 91. Japanese food is so much more than sushi and Homma lets us look at some of foundations of this cuisine. If you want to understand the heart and sole of Japanese food culture this is a very good place to start. Gaku Homma is a living National Tresure for Japan and for the rest of us here in the USA. Buy this book!
This is a wonderful book!.......2003-07-22
I have eaten at Gaku Homma's restrant, Domo's, and it is wonderful but I can't eat there as often as I would like. Not that expensive but being a student I can't aford going out to eat very often unless it is McDoalds dollar menu. I bought his book and it has made it a bit eiser for me to eat good food. I also enjoy the stories behind the food and his life experiances.

Book Description
Commercial Poultry Nutrition has been widely accepted as a standard around the world for practical application of feeding systems, in all parts of the poultry industry. This second edition is a major rewrite of the original publication, and in addition to updating all relevant data has been expanded by some 30%.
There is now increased emphasis on description of major and alternate feed ingredients together with details of various ingredient quality control procedures. In dealing with nutrition of meat birds there is emphasis on economics of alternate feeding systems together with details of feed program choice as it affects carcass meat yield and quality.
There are exclusive chapters on nutrition and feeding of both immature and adult egg layers with increased emphasis on both white and brown egg birds. Details of manipulating egg composition are discussed in relation to human health and value-added marketing. The nutritional strategy for all classes of breeding stock are described in terms of egg production, hatchability and also offspring viability and quality. Other specialist sections detail nutrient requirements and feeding programs for turkeys, waterfowl, game birds and ratites.
The authors have produced a unique description of the practical application of nutritional strategies for commercial poultry producers. This new book will be of interest to nutritionists, veterinarians and other senior professionals involved in commercial poultry production.

A Must for Anyone Putting Together Poultry Rations.......2000-12-11
A lot of poultrykeepers feel the temptation to invent their own chicken feed blend. Doing this successfully requires quite a bit of knowlege, and this book provides it. It's quite accessible to the interested layman, though it assumes you already know something about nutrition (for example, it doesn't explain what amino acids are or why you'd care).
Not as exhaustive as Ewing's massive and long-out-of-print POULTRY NUTRITION, but it's more up-to-date and far easier to use.

Stylish Leather Crafts.......2002-11-12
I used to do leather craft way back when it was pretty much limited to kitchy country western style motifs. Boy have things changed!! This book drew me in with it's updated stylish designs for home accessories that would complement many decorating styles (there are some killer pillow designs in here!!). The photography is great, there is a nice intro to different leathers, tools, and crafting techniques and the project instructions seem pretty good too.
My only beef with the book is that you must visit the publisher's website for a supplier list of materials (many of the materials required for the projects would NOT be available in your local craft chain store). And...on the website there is only one leather supplier listed.
Also...this is not a "weekend craft...use tools you already have around the house" book. As I mentioned above, the projects are lovely, but will require an investment in tools and supplies specifically required for working with leather.
If you are already a leather crafter, a returning leather crafter like me, or a serious beginner willing to invest in the required materials I heartily recommend this book. I think you will really be inspired by these projects.
Product Description
Lavishly illustrated with color photographs, including many instructional photos. This presents a variety of projects using both traditional leatherworking techniques such as tooling and branding, and new methods of hot surface embellishments like stamping and stenciling. Detailed step by step directions for each project. Projects use leather, suede or rawhide and include accessories for dining room, office, and other household items as well as some wearable craft.

fascinating.......2007-08-06
I loved this textbook. I read it for an Infant & Child Development class and found it interesting, clear and helpful. Anyone interested in childhood development should definitely read this book!
This is NOT the textbook!.......2007-03-10
This is a workbook that goes with the textbook, Infants and Children, by Berk, 5th Edition. It is NOT the actual textbook like it seems to be. No one mentions this and I ordered it thinking it was the textbook. It was not clear on the Amazon site, so just be aware!
A Diamond Second Bester...But By A Micro Eyelash.......2006-08-10
From my experience, no other book--at this time--can upend Gonzalez-Mena's INFANTS, TODDLERS, AND CAREGIVERS. In it's seventh edition, it stands as the most near perfect infant/toddler textbook ever created.
Now...Berk's book is probably the best "second-best" textbook that I have found.
She goes from history/theory to basic foundations to each era of children from birth to Age 11. The book is filled with color pictures and color charts along with plenty of special interest sidebar accounts on subjects like the negative side of extended infant child care.
So why is it the second best? It just doesn't cover infants and toddlers exclusively. Instead, it exists as a superbly written book on early childhood growth and development...which isn't such a bad thing.
Check it out if you either can't get Gonzalez-Mena's book or if you just want a second opinion on infant/toddler concepts.

A moving account of a horrifying period in history.......1999-04-15
Brothers From Bataan is a book that should be required reading in every High School History class. Like Tom Brokaws new book about the generation that fought WW II, Brothers From Bataan give the reader a true appreciation for what these brave men suffered for their country. It's compelling reading, although difficult at times because of the emotions it draws from the reader. Mr. Martin has made this story - a very personal one for him and his family - a very personal one for the reader as well.
