"Reality and intensity are the chief watchwords of this unique and highly personal memoir of World War II submarine combat in the Southwest Pacific."--Seapower
Customer Reviews:
History from the deep!.......2007-06-16
War in the Boats is a classic in the field of submarine history and World War Two history. It's a good read, highly entertaining, and filled with information about the war from the first person perspective of a young officer in the silent service.
Inside you'll find spine-tingling stories of what it was like to serve on a diesel boat in the war. The tight confines, harsh conditions, interesting flushing systems for toilets (let's just say you didn't want to plug the bore of this breach feed weapon), stunning bravery, chance and a depth charge so close light was seen through the ship's hull.
This book really puts into perspective the dangers of submarine warfare in the war and does a very nice job of presenting the history of the Pacific war without bogging the reader down.
This book easily compares well to it's contemporaries such as RADM Dick O"Kane
s Clear the Bridge and Galltain's Take her Deep!
But enough! I'll ruin the book for you if I tell you more.
Interesting and informative - but the tone annoys me.......2001-10-15
As a reader from Germany interested in history I already read a number of memoirs from German submariners and technical/historical literature on the topic. So in comparing this book with the above mentioned ones my mind just forms one question: How did this bunch win their war? And the answer: Because Japanese ASW-effectiveness was near to nonexistent. Facing an adversary as Great Britain it would have been doubtful if any of the submariners in US-boats would have survived. But this author as many others lament the high losses (about 50 boats with crew; for comparision:Germany about 700 boats, 30000 of 40000 men). At least he does not boast the 'welldeserved' victory as is typical for US-authors. And he even apologizes for his sometimes jingoistic diction being result of wartime mentality. Having said this I can admit that I enjoyed reading this book, for it is an interesting and first hand insight view of US sub warfare in WW2 and a counterweight to the standard literature centered on either technic or 'big picture' history.
I can recommend this book with the above mentioned restrictions.
But do read some similar books written by German submariners for balance (but not 'iron coffins', that is biased to say the least).
Salty-an excellent sea story.......1997-06-12
Capt. Ruhe captures the essence of the submarine officer. The frustrations, hardships and ultimate glory of the silent service are powerfully captured on every page. The patrol accounts make you feel as if you were there. Ruhe details all his daily concerns, both as a junior officer, and as the Executive officer. You get a good feel for his leadership style, and those of the other wardroom officers. I only wish he had included some of their accounts of different incidents to get a broader feel for the story. The prose is easy to read and spiced with homey wartime era ancedotes and subtle humor. I Recommend it to all Navy officers, especially Submariners and any WWII history buffs

Not just for women.......2007-02-20
This book is well written and a quick read that is good for women who are concerned about the man in their life. It is also a good book for men to read to better understand the problems of depression in men. This seems to be a topic that has not gotten nearly as much attention as depression in women. With the popularity of the internet the problem of depression in men is beginning to get more attention and it is becoming easier to find information. As of now this is easily one of the top five books available for men with depression.

This book got me out of a doozy.......2006-07-11
Dr. Wexler's book was inspiring and insightful, to say the least. His metaphors and simple, yet thoughtful, techniques and insights changed my relationship. This book helped me overcome my semi-depressed life that seemed to consist of the same day over and over again. I am now able to see myself and my relationship in a whole new light.
Saved.......2006-03-03
This book saved my relationship. I was terrified to start a relationship with a wonderful guy because I knew he drank. I knew he had been in Vietnam but had that was 30 years ago. After reading Dr. Wexler's book I insisted that he go to the VA
and get help. He is now on an anti-depressant, has a new job, and has completely turned his life around. I am so thankful that
this book was recomended to me because my darling man was in no
shape to help himself.
Great guide to the hidden epidemic of Male Depression.......2006-02-16
This is a great little book, filled with helpful insights and vignettes. I found myself quoting Dr. Wexler's book so often in treatment that I finally got smart and started making it required reading for all of my clients, both couples and individuals, for whom male depression is an issue.

Book Description
This delightful little book contains a veritable treasury of enticing, easy, and fun-to-make cakes and treats -- straight from the kitchen of the Charleston Cake Lady. At last home bakers can learn the secrets that have made her cakes legendary. Here, for the first time, are the coveted recipes for her bestsellers, such as Milk Chocolate Cake (a light-as-air, but deeply chocolate-flavored confection), Crunchy Pound Cake (a delightful, crunchier version of the classic recipe), and Chocolate Chip Cake (guaranteed to become an immediate family favorite).
Intensely flavorful, moist, and addictive, the cakes are so easy to make they can be prepared in almost no time at all. A real boon to busy cooks, the Cake Lady's simple recipes deliver classic flavors without requiring fancy equipment, complicated instructions, or lengthy ingredients lists. Along the way, the author makes helpful suggestions about baking, serving, and storing the cakes. Her recipes are foolproof and the cakes taste so rich they don't even need to be frosted! They freeze, pack, and ship beautifully, too, which makes them ideal for gift giving.

A Lovely Southern Sojourn.......2007-02-18
I received this book as a gift. I love it. I found Teresa Pregnall's candid comments about her recipes fascinating. She offers charming stories about each recipe, and surprisingly, she admits that some of her recipes call for cake mixes (reminiscent of the Cake Doctor recipes). I've made a number of the cakes, both the "scratch" recipes and those calling for a cake mix, and every one has turned out beautifully. Her pound cakes (I especially loved the Cofectioners' Sugar Pound Cake), bundt cakes, muffins, etc. are easy to make and have flavor and goodness that brings back memories of the desserts I ate as a child. This "Treasured Recipes" book would be a nice fit in anyone's collection, and I also recommend her companion book, "Special Recipes".
The solution to the flops.......2005-12-30
I have now made the coconut carrot cake, the carrot cake and the gem cake. They all turned out well and I have used adaptations of them for wedding cakes and special event cakes in my catering business.
I have a tip for anyone who is making any cake from any recipe - do not use all-purpose flour - use cake flour for cakes. Using cake flour will make all the flops work out much better. I found the gem cake a bit on the eggy side (4 eggs will do that) but once I iced with a homemade whipped cream based icing and real strawberries it was fine.
What I've noticed about this and many other cookbooks is that there is an assumption made by the author that people know what they are doing in the kitchen. Since often this is not the case I would recommend that folks read: The Cake Bible first and perhaps another book about cakes from scratch. Then read this book and only using real cake flour make the cakes that seem interesting to you.
Disappointed but maybe I am wrong.......2003-02-05
I think that people who buy this book should know that many of the recipes require the use of a cake mix. It may be that when I actually make the cakes, I will regret what I write now, but until then I am feeling a little short changed. Surely Mrs. Pregnall does not use commercial cake mix in her own shop.
This isn't a Treasure its a GOLD MINE!.......2000-11-25
The recipes in the book are super easy to make, and they taste like you have slaved over them all day long when in fact you really haven't. It's not just cake recipes (my fav. being the Choc. Chip Cake) but I shall always use Teresa's Brownie recipe for the rest of my life. There are Pound Cake recipes,Coffee Cake recipes,Snacks and Picnic Treats recipes, and many more treasures. Teresa, YOU are the real Treasure. Thanks
Beautiful book, but the recipes..........2000-10-12
When this book arrived, I had trouble putting it down. It's such fun to read. I bake often, & my friends really enjoy my cakes. (I'm not a baking novice.) I tried 3 recipes from this book. Two were flops, & one was mediocre. The chocolate chip cake, & Charlston chews were gooey in the middle long after the suggested bake time. The buttermilk coffee cake was nothing special. I'd buy a different book.

Great interactive book!.......2006-06-16
My 11 month old son loves this book! The sliding pages are a great surprise and he always gets excited before I review the hidden pictures. Great interactive book! You may also try "Whose Hatching?" by the same author.
Whose House Is This?.......2000-10-12
My 7-month old daughter loves this book! Although she cannot slide open the pictures herself, she sits on my lap and we read and slide together. The words are large and simple so that she can follow along and then she anxiously waits for me to slide open the picture. Once we get to the end, we start all over again and again and again!
My two year old LOVES this book........1998-08-19
Whose house is this? is a delightful game of peekaboo with cute animals. The mechanics of the book are interesting in that the pages slide open and closed. It is tough for our son to do himself, but it is fairly easy for an adult when reading to him. The book is ideally suited for a child aged 2-3. My son loves books and this is one of his favorites.

Wonderful to make keepsakes.......2007-06-27
As mother of 6 and grandmother of 12, I thought this would be a good purchase for making keepsakes of the grandchildren's handprints for their parents. Very inspirational. Gets the creative juices flowing.
Great Ideas.......2007-03-09
13 projects. Very simple quilts but lovely ideas - a great starting point for personal gifts and memories of when they were small. Also interesting and different gifts a pre-teen could help with or a teenager could make him/herself.
Layton discusses what to do when you realise you have made a mistake, and how to avoid some of the more obvious ones. I don't like all the quilts she has done - some of the backgrounds and layouts are not my cup-of-tea. However, there is much discussion on how to vary what is there, as well as a "gallery" of wuilts made by her or with her help that show how you can take the ideas presented and display them differently.
I particularly like
- "Happy Hands" - straight out hand prints in primary colours with smiling faces on them. I intend to create this quilt with my two year old niece.
- "Sweet Hearts" - use both hands printed in such a way to create a heart shape. We shall get all the cousins together to make this for Grandma's birthday.
- "Jungle Rumble" and "Circus Fun" - decorate hand prints to create jungle animals such as elephants and lions. I shall be encouraging my 8 year old to hellp make this for a baby cousin.
Fabulous Book !.......2007-03-08
Our elementary school is celebrating 50 years of learning this year. We are in the process of creating a commemorative quilt to be hung in the school. The ideas in this book are outstanding! Instead of designing the squares ourselves, we selected areas of learning for each classroom and asked the children to submit their ideas. The outcome was incredible. The committee plans to use the ideas in this book to embellish childrens' handprints for the classroom squares designed by the students.
Cute ideas!.......2006-03-15
This book has some wonderfully creative ideas. My first grade class put together the handprint sunflower with the help of a good seamstress. The end result was very nice.
Awesome book!.......2005-10-17
I love this book! I have made several of the projects in this book. The directions are easy to follow and the projects turn out great every time. I use this to make quilts with the kids at my sons' school to auction as a fundraiser, but these would also make wonderful keepsake quilts for family. Highly recommend.

Honoring Sacred Moments and Special Times
You perform rituals with your family every day. Thursday night, you order pizza; Sunday morning, you make French toast. Before bedtime you read to your child. During the holiday season, you ask your children to donate some of their toys to the homeless. But while most of us participate in rituals regularly, many of us fail to recognize the significance of the ritual. In The Joy of Family Rituals, Barbara Biziou demonstrates how these moments can enrich our families if we take the time to reflect on how they are beneficial to our lives. Rituals provide the foundation that today's families need to feel secure and grounded. Making these simple rites part of your family will foster communication, nurture children's self-esteem, and help maintain a sacred and spiritual connection among family members.
Let rituals strengthen and celebrate your family. This warm and inspirational book offers an array of "ritual recipes," from those that acknowledge ordinary routines (mealtimes, baths, bedtimes) to rituals that commemorate significant life passages (parenthood, new siblings, puberty) and special family occasions (birthdays and anniversaries). It also includes rituals for first times, last times, and hard times (losing a pet).
The Joy of Family Rituals has a warm, playful tone and recipe format that is designed to make rituals, many of which date back to our ancestors, easy to incorporate into our family lives. For each ritual, Biziou explains the history and reasoning behind it and why it can help us through similar times and experiences today. She includes a specific intention or purpose for the ritual (blessing our food before meals with the intention to appreciate the nourishment in our lives and to create an atmosphere of mindful eating), advice on timing (when or how often you should perform the ritual), the necessary ingredients (candles, colors, and scents), and step-by-step instructions for performing the ritual. Where it's appropriate, follow-up steps for additional reinforcement are also included. Finally, a "ritual reality" section gives real-life stories about how a particular ritual affected one family's life. Throughout the book, Biziou encourages you to adapt these rituals to your own situation and mold them to fit your family's needs.
Families are the center of society. By nurturing our families through rituals, which bring family members together and add a spiritual element to an otherwise material world, we can enrich society. Engage your senses, open your heart, and discover the joy of family rituals!
Customer Reviews:
A guide for the imagination.......2000-04-18
The Joy of Family Ritual, written in the style of a cookbook, offers recipes for how to nourish and enrich everyday life. Biziou, a modern shaman, inducted me into a deeper experience of family. The recipes have the power to transfrom ordinary actions into sacred art. In the alchemical tradition of the ancients, this book serves as a resource guide for the imagination.
Satisfies a Deep Human Craving.......2000-04-13
Barbara Biziou's book is brilliant, inspiring, and comforting. It satisfies a deep, often unconscious, human craving for rituals that give meaning and a sense of continuity to our family lives. Every family, no matter what its religious or cultural background, will profit from this fascinating book. It's like having your own fairy godmother in the attic weaving your family's personal magical golden cloth out of the straw of ordinary life.
Barbara combines her extensive knowledge of rituals throughout the world with specific suggestions about rituals that would fit easily and comfortably into our busy, and often isolated, modern lives. She gives us a delicious gift of easy to follow "recipes" for rituals that celebrate family life from everyday rituals to rituals that support families moving through all the major transitions of life.

One's Man's Sexual and Spiritual Odyssey.......2001-04-18
A brilliantly accomplished memoir, "Lotus on A Dung Heap" takes you right there, to the very heart of things and lets the reader experience the author's life in all its daring, sexual complexity. By turns irreverent and poignant, John Basile's book is not for the faint of heart. From San Francisco to Italy, Asia and Mexico, Lotus reads like a sexual travelogue with not infrequent stops for, believe it or not, spiritual reflection. It is, in fact, the dynamic interplay of spirit and flesh that makes "Lotus" so compelling and a must read for both the curious and well traveled alike.
Fast moving action for a gay man coming out in WW2.......2001-03-21
The book is an amazing look into the life of a sensitive gayartist as he experiences what life is all about. He is plunged intowar at the age of 18, guesses there's something wrong with him anddosen't find out until he's drafted into the Navy. From here hediscovers that not only are there hundreds of other gay men around, but with the absence of women, so-called straight men ... under theright circumstances. It is all discribed in wonderful, sometimespoetic language. The adventures go from strange to bizarre. Basile'sdescriptive voice is marvelous. After the war he finds himself in SanFrancisco where he is studying art. And here are some of the mosthilarious scenes in the book. Bohemian artists in the early 60's mixwith all manners of people that can only be found in San Francisoc. There's a marriage in Rome to a beautiful Italian girl.... Big mistakesince he was tricked into it. Basile describes the dilemma a gay mangoes through while making love to a woman and at the same time, ishaving affaires with men. It rarely works out, as he explains. Hedivorces and goes through the discovery of liberated sex in the early70's. This part of the book describes explicit sexual behaviour insex bars and bathhouses where anything goes. This was just beforeAIDS. When the AIDS epidemic surfaces, the young man volunteers as anAIDS buddy. Here there are various descriptions of his contacts withAIDS patients, heart rendering and heroic. There are case histories ofsome of the infected men and how they cope and die. Basile's abilityto describe his life is uncanny. He puts you right there. You reallyfeel what he feels. I loved the book and am looking forward to morefrom this writer.

3 Years as a POW of the JAPANESE.......2006-12-31
One of the best, ever, of WWII books by U.S. GI's.
Every college history class should have this book!
Highly recommended.
A Moving, True Story.......2001-01-31
Frank Grady was a personal friend of my fathers. Maybe because I grew up knowing him, the story made more of an impression on me than it would have normally. But whatever it is, it was a moving story about the resiliency of the human spirit. It is also about the humor, obstinacy and stubbornness; which contributes to that resiliency. Mr. Grady and others like him were true heros. It was an honor to have known him and it is an honor to know more about him through his book.
