A thoughtful biography........2005-10-04
Waite traces the lineage of St. Martin from his youth to his traditional religious life and conversion to mysticism and how his order was started and influenced Rosicrucians in America. Martinism is now growing very fast and with the Internet many new orders have started worldwide. This biography lends substance and structure to understanding its popularity today!

Boundless energy awaits anyone willing to trade their cigs, drugs, or lattés for the healthier alternatives prescribed in Natural Highs. According to authors Hyla Cass, M.D., and Patrick Holford, the first step toward bliss is eating right. In their lean yet satisfying nutrition chapter, they advocate a fairly even ratio of complex carbohydrates, proteins, and fats; plenty of water; high-potency multivitamins; and minerals. After establishing this balanced diet, those seeking to "get high" or "chill out" can select from a menu of natural supplements and substances: various stress busters, energizers, and mood enhancers that research shows can mimic--or surpass--the appealing effects of stimulants like caffeine, sugar, and nicotine or sedatives like dope, alcohol, and tranquilizers. Best of all, these good vibrations allegedly come without the typical letdowns or addictions. Historical tidbits, ample charts and diagrams, scientific data, and case studies from the authors' practices create a compelling argument for natural alternatives, including kava, ginseng, choline, and DMAE. Helpful sidebars outline the positive effects, cautions (rarely any), and recommended dosages associated with each item. Cass and Holford also delve into uplifting lifestyle enhancements like meditation, massage, dance, and sexual chemistry. Lots of reference material rounds out this guide to healthy--and legal--mood magic. --Liane Thomas
Book Description
What does it take to make you feel "high"? Do you routinely reach for caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes, or sugary snacks to get you through the day? Unfortunately, the quick fixes we have become accustomed to don't work long-term, and often contribute further to the underlying problems of fatigue, depression, brain fog, and anxiety.
In Natural Highs, two leading authorities in psychology and nutrition present a prescriptive breakthrough program based on nutritional supplements, herbs, and simple mind-body therapies that will help to increase energy, sharpen the mind, elevate mood, relax the body, and beat stress. Their remarkable research shows how to formulate the perfect "brainfood" to improve how we think and feel, resulting in a greater sense of connection and joy in everyday life-the natural high.

There Is a Better Way!.......2005-04-04
I love this book. I recommend it to all my clients. The information presented is easy to understand, easy to use, and just plain reader-friendly. "Natural Highs" gives people the ability to take back control of their moods and their life safely and effectively. Read it, use it, and dare to be happy!

It's always off the bookshelf.......2004-11-17
Once again I reached for Dr. Cass' book today. I've had it for about six months and it hasn't sat closed for any two weeks in a row. I've tried several items listed and found that some worked and some didn't. One of the greatest joys is replacing a pill or supplement with real food. I'd rather eat fish than a tablespoon of fish oil!
It took time to realize that the book is written for a general audience, not just for me. Now I'm working through her suggestions methodically, patiently weeding out those that aren't right for me and keeping those that are. For instance, I discovered that high potency vitamin B "complete" supplements work well with SAMe. On the other hand, valerian only caused bad dreams.
Used in conjunction with Chris Carmichael's "Food for Fitness" and some great web resources, I find that I have both high energy and a great attitude towards life and my health.
Finally something useful!.......2003-11-16
I don't know about you, but I get tired of health & nutrition books that go on and on about technical details without supplying any real information I can use. That is why I have appreciated the direct approach taken in Natural Highs. The authors clearly explain how to feel better and why it works. The descriptions of neurotransmitters and brain chemistry are sufficient without becoming tiresome. The supplement recommendations are candid and well balanced. Important techniques such as breathwork and meditation are also covered. This book is readable and even entertaining. If you are curious about natural ways to relax or improve your mood, give it a try!
This Book Rocks!.......2003-08-25
The advice in this book worked for me, it has many options to improve over-all health!
OK, but not scientific.......2003-01-02
There is definitely some interesting information in this book, but the use of biased anecdotes and several totally false claims make it difficult to determine how much of the book can actually be trusted.
Overall it wasn't worth buying because I had to spend many hours doing my own research on the authors' claims. As always books that rely on anecdotes to back up claimed benefits should be viewed with suspicion.

Wonderful.......2001-08-10
A tremendous guide to owning a cocker, which has certainly helped me and by extension my spaniel Barry. There are fantastic tips on training and health care as well as tons of superb colour photographs. I enjoyed the book immensely and, though I have a sneaking suspicion that Barry is using the book as porn, I wholeheartedly recommend it.
Book Description
Essential references for dog owners-now in paperback. A complete illustrated guide to the history, temperament, and physical characteristics of each breed, this handy paperback series includes full profiles on cocker spaniels, dachshunds, German shepherds, golden retrievers, Labrador retrievers, and poodles. Each volume also has expert advice on every aspect of dog care, including day-to-day well-being, behavior issues, training, grooming, health, and exercise.
Customer Reviews:
A great introduction to the breed.......2003-12-01
WE are starting the search for a new dog and I have narrowed the number of breeds I am looking at to a handful. I bought this book as a way to learn more about cockers. This book containes many features I found very useful - full descriptions of the differences, both physical and tempermental, between American and English cockers, great behavior profile charts, sex and type differences, breed-specific health problems and even a section on how coat color effects personality. While cockers still seem to me to be wonderful dogs, this book helped me determine that they are not the breed for our family at this time. A very useful and well written introduction to the breed.
A great big help! For new owners or veteren owners alike!.......2000-12-18
This book was very helpful as a guide to owning a Cocker. I recommend it highly and hope you learn as much as I did about this breed. Very gorgeous pictures and very informative and descriptive!
Superb quick reference.......1998-10-11
For all its slim 80 pages, this is an excellent reference book. In particular it so graphically illustrates the differences between the American and English Cockers, that anyone in doubt of their own dogs lineage, would not go wrong consulting this book.
Colour photography is used throughout and all salient points are accompanied by appropriate photography or diagrams.
It might be a small book, but it seems to cover a great deal.
Book Description
Perhaps the most popular variety of spaniel among pet owners, the Cocker is adaptable to most human lifestyles and, when carefully acclimated, makes a wonderful companion for children. This new addition to Barron's Pet Handbooks is typical of the series, filled with detailed advice on feeding, grooming, health care, and training, as well as extensive information on traits of the breed. It's filled with color photos and line art.

Terribly out-of-date.......1999-10-26
Don't buy this book! It's terribly out-of-date. The author recommends using DDT to get rid of a dog's fleas. Most of the photographs (all forty or fifty years old) are so dark, the images are nearly indecipherable. There must be something better!
A Thick Handbook.......1998-07-09
Covers all the essentials of owning a cocker, including history, genetics, breeding, the cocker in the field, ring, and as a companion dog, first aid, nutrition, and more.

Hairlocking: Everything You Need to Know.......2006-11-03
This was an extremely informative book! I loved it.
Misrepresentation.......2005-09-15
This book provided very little factual infoprmation. It seems that the author just wanted a medium to express her personal spiritual views. If you are trying to research locks, it would be best to seek out another source.
Motivating the masses to "Lock".......2005-02-24
This book is positive reinforcent and a informational guide to
people with nappy hair. It dispels the myth that nappy hair is " bad" and straight hair is "good". Indeed, if you have a healthy head of hair of any kind it is "good".
It's not a step-by-step guide to hair locking. Nekhena Evans earns a living from teaching people how to lock other peoples hair. She recommends that you go a qualified loctician to have your hair locked. This book is an ispirational guide to get you motivated and inspired.
Everyone is beautiful in his own way. African Americans have too long embraced European ideals of beauty and not seen the beauty in themselves.
It gives some invaluable information, if you read it carefully. I learned about Jojoba oil by reading this book. Nothing has improved the condition of my skin and hair as much as this product has.
I did finally decided to lock my hair and I really like it. Life is too short not to do or be what you really want. Society may shun you, so-called friends will reject you. Let them go! Get rid of people that can't except you the way the Creator made you. Don't worry be nappy. You'll find some real friends and be much happier.
Don't stop here.........2005-01-14
If you are looking for help working your way through a new loc journey, (what to use, how to do it etc.) this book is not for you. If your doing research on the history of loc'd hair, with lots of personal convictions - this book is for you. If you have made the decision to loc your hair, you probably already have your own convictions - you don't need to buy them from a stranger. . I was so disappointed that with this book, I actually tossed it in the trash - something I almost never do.
Interesting Book.......2004-08-27
In this book, the author discusses the origins of locks, "dreadlocks vs locks", and the myths associated with locked hair. Excellent encouragement for people who have locks or anyone who is just thinking about it. This book encourages acceptance of African "coiled" hair, and shows that beauty does not only have to be Eurocentric. I agree with the author's statements that once African-Americans lock their hair, they "fall in love with it." To me, this means that a person with locked hair has accepted their natural hair and all of it's quirks and knows that beauty comes in all hair textures. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a "how-to" book.

Useless dribble.......2001-02-16
If you are in the process of locking or thinking about locking, this book will provide no useful information as to how to go about it. The author is more concerned with imparting her concept of spirituality rather than facts. It takes about an hour to read through this mess, and I'm still wondering what the 40 commandments of MAAT have to do with locking ones hair. What I was looking for was some real information regarding starting, maintaining and caring for locs, types of products to use (other than the authors own). No wonder this mess is out of print. The entire discussion on coiled hair as antennae and electromagnetic fields was entirely too comical!
Unfortuantely, people will accept this book as authoritative.......1999-10-25
eventhough it contains very little information about dreadlocks, and the majority of the information that it DOES contain is erroneous, incomplete, or simply made up by the author and her clique. She is apparently ignorant of the fact that dreadlocks date back to the beginning of time in ALL cultures, not just black culture (for example, ancient celtic warriors wore dreads, as did the Maoris of New Zeland), although she makes up for this in part by classifying dread-wearers such as the Shivites of India as "african". This is an even greater pity considering that THE ENTIRE HUMAN RACE originated in Ethiopia, a fact she is ignorant of, eventhough it would support some of her claims. (Should I tell her that Bob Marley's father was white?) It is a damn shame to see a book like this used to perpetuate the isms and scims of Babylon (and hustle customers into her hair salon), rather than to promote the upful and positive dread vibe and the truth of Rastafari. If this book goes into a second printing it should be retitled: Everything My Guru And I made Up About Hairlocking (Including The Awkward And Inarticulate Term "Locktician").
everything i wanted to know "NOT".......1999-10-01
This was an amusing little book that was about a 20 min read start to finish.(I'm by no means a speed reader. Too much quasi-spiritual blah blah and not what I wanted to know. What I wanted to know was much more in the way of technical information and illustration, and nice photos. Nice try trying to market everything from products, to videos, classes etc etc etc. In a word this book was "boring".
Format & overall presentation of the info very pertinent........1999-09-17
I enjoyed the basic insight provided by N. Evans. I believe I would be classified as in the 'teenage' stage of locs, and found the information & relative tips to be pretty handy. I live in Minneapolis, MN where there is a growing trend to 'lock-up'. This isn't the most diverse state, so printed info such as this book are a must read. The hairdresser at Malobe Natural Hair Salon 813 W. Lake St. 800-840-4514, (feel free to mention you heard from Montuaine), recommended this book & was not wrong in giving it rave reviews. I have been convinced to endure the early stages of locking & patiently await the look I desire.
It is Exactly!!everything you need to know about hairlocking.......1999-05-11
This book comfirms it. Locking is a natural, spiritual experience. A guide to beautiful, clean, antennae to the Most High. No dirty, dreadful locks.

Not the usual self-help fare.......2006-02-25
This is an excellent resource for learning self-hynosis and for persons struggling with dissociation. It is clear, well organized and the hypnotic inductions can be modified/customized to work best for you. The goal is on better functioning and empowerment rather than just labeling. She takes rather complex psychological theory and makes it accessible and useable for a non-professional audience.

Book Description
"A penetrating biography. . . . Ludington offers a psychological portrait of an intense, contradictory, scornful, but gentle man who transcended his nineteenth-century roots in Lewiston, Maine, to view Europe as his home and to make a distinctive contribution to modernism."--Kirkus Reviews
"Drawing on Hartley's letters and other writings as well as on the correspondence and reminiscences of the artist's friends, Ludington traces the restless career of the painter. . . . [Hartley] had troubled friendships with some of the most important artists and writers of his day--Gertrude Stein, William Carlos Williams, Fairfield Porter, Eugene O'Neill, Georgia O'Keeffe, and others. His relationship with Alfred Stieglitz, who supported him financially and exhibited his work, . . . runs like a leitmotif through the book, and indicates Hartley's character--demanding, touchy, often ungrateful but also compelling. . . . This frank and unsentimental account of a life of contradictions and paradoxes returns one to the artist's paintings with a fresh eye."--Publishers Weekly
"Marsden Hartley (1877-1943) had a virtually unique role as a modernist painter. He was notable not only for his powerful canvases but for his poetry and essays. Townsend Ludington's astute portrait of the artist focuses upon his cosmopolitan sensibility in a generation melding modern art with an American tradition of mystical idealism. . . . Ludington views Hartley as an essential American artist embarked on a spiritual odyssey."--Robert Taylor, Boston Globe

Book Description
While Rosie the Riveter and millions of American women fought World War II on the home front, other women witnessed the war firsthand. Many of them were overtaken by Japan's military offensive in the South Pacific and subsequently held captive. Theresa Kaminski chronicles their harrowing experiences in this moving testament of women in wartime.
Although most of us are familiar with accounts of POWs, few realize that the Japanese imprisoned thousands of American civilian women in the Philippines during World War II. They were businessmen's wives and career girls, missionaries and teachers, nurses and mothers-and some were even spies. Many had grown accustomed to the good life in a colonial society, but after the Japanese invaded they had to learn to fend for themselves. Prisoners in Paradise is the most complete look at the experiences of these heroic women.
Theresa Kaminski takes readers inside the internment camps to show how these women coped and how the experience changed them. Some took on leadership roles for the first time in their lives, while many found themselves doing work they had previously left to servants. They learned to stretch both the boundaries of acceptable behavior for women and the norms of motherhood as they struggled to meet the challenge of captivity. They fought to keep their families together, adjusting to changes in work habits and private lives under the watchful eye of their Japanese captors. They also kept up their morale by diverting themselves with fashion--however impromptu it might have been.
While most civilian women were interned, others fled into the hills or adopted new identities to avoid captivity, relying on neighbors and former servants for survival. Kaminski shares their stories as well, such as that of an intelligence agent who escaped the Japanese to fight with--and serve as mother to--a band of Filipino guerrillas, and a spy known as "High Pockets" who got her nickname by smuggling documents in her brassiere.
Prisoners in Paradise is the product of exceptionally wide-ranging research, drawing on interviews, letters, and diaries of internees. It shows how women under duress negotiated issues of gender and national identity in their struggle to survive, bolstered by their belief in what it meant to be an American woman. By sharing these little-known stories of perseverance and survival, Kaminski draws new profiles of courage that can inspire us half a century later.
Customer Reviews:
Women in Japanese prison camps .......2005-06-25
Fourteen thousand civilian Americans spent the years of World War II as "guests" of their Japanese conquerors. The author tells the story of more than a dozen American women who were interned by the Japanese or took to the hills to escape being captives. Most of the Americans were residents of the Philippines, but one was interned in Borneo, another on Celebes and a third in Hong Kong.
The best known of the internees, Agnes Newton Keith, was a well known author before the war and wrote a chilling account, "Three Came Home," of her three years in captivity. Several of the other women also published their stories or were interviewed by the author.
I can't think of anything more frightening than to be stranded with your children ten thousand miles from home in wartime and being totally at the mercy of a cruel enemy. Fortunately, the Japanese, for all their savagery in China, did not usually physically abuse the Caucasian women. However, hunger, isolation, and the fear of the unknown were potent factors. Perhaps the most amazing part of this story is how well and effectively the women coped with their fate.
There is a bit too much of academia in the narrative. The drama of the lives of the captives -- or those who evaded captivity -- could have been better exploited. The thematic approach taken by the author involved much skipping around from woman to woman and made it difficult to become familiar with them individually. But, the story is good and interesting, the research impeccable, and the book well worth reading by World War II buffs, feminists, and people interested in the impact of extreme stress on human beings.

Not another book about the horrors of war but..........2002-07-06
...one of hope and survival. The women come to life as their story is told of how they went from a life of leisure with servants to do the work for them to doing everything by themselves with little help from their men. Ms Kaminsky does an excellent job telling these women's story and her book is a great addition to my bookshelves.
Thought-provoking and page-turning.......2002-02-07
What does it take to survive? What does it cost? This brilliant, fearless, absolutely page-turning book examines the plight of American women caught in the camps. The women in this book burst alive on the page with stories you just can't forget. Just beautifully written! Can't wait to read more from the very talented Kaminski.
What makes a woman a "good" woman?.......2000-05-09
A good book informs and entertains. A great book informs, entertains and forces us to ask questions. Kaminski's book cannot be read without introspection. As she details a horrifying scenario, military detention of women and children on foreign soil, and delves into how that situation affected women's roles, the reader is compelled to ask, "What if this happened to me?"
Is it better to keep one's head held high or better to feed your child? Is it better to uphold the vestiges of social class and civilization or is it better to put a roof over your children's heads? Over and over, Kaminski forces the reader to wonder, "What would I do in a similar situation?"
Kaminiski's depth of research and understanding of the topic shines on every page. These heroic women, until now so disregarded by history, owe her a great debt.
For any person who marvels at the power of roles to dictate worthiness, this book is a must read. I wish we'd had this book when I attended women's studies classes. Thank you, Dr. Kaminski, for bringing this unknown part of history to light.
