Book Description
Wartime Nurse recounts the amazing exploits of nurses working in battle zones spanning wars from the Crimea to Korea—years when such nurses struggled for official recognition. Florence Nightingale's nurses defied male prejudice and the conventions of the age by caring for soldiers in hospitals seething with cholera. Reports from the South African wars of 1899-1902 told of nurses calmly dressing wounds in a street while shells exploded around them. In the First World War, over 10,000 nurses and 23,000 women of Voluntary Aid Detachments served not only in France but world-wide, from the ice-bound port of Archangel to the oven-like heat of Mesopotamia.

A MUST read for Everyone!.......2006-06-21
Everyone who is alive should read this book NOW, before you get sick, especially with an incurable sickness like cancer, etc. In the first half of the book, Mr Cousins explores the mind-body relationship by example, not theory. Even if you already have a positive outlook, this will only (and very strongly) deepen the strength of that positiveness (new word?).
The second half talks about relationships among doctors. If you have more than one doc diving you medications, chances are they are NOT talking to each other to compare the sysmptoms of mixing the drugs, which may be the cause of a seemingly worse problem.
It is a very easy read. READ it now. You will not regret it. It is more than just laughing.
Healing Advice.......2003-11-25
Cousins connects personal experience with scientific research to make a compelling case for the healing power of positive emotions. Norman Cousins was a journalist who was healed through changing his behavior and thoughts. As a followup to his experience he was brought to the UCLA Medical School to do further inquiry into the topic. He interviewed physicians, patients, and family members in his study.
He discusses how his findings were misinterpreted and made to appear shallow by critics. But he felt that he had a valid contribution to make to our understanding of ourselves.
Philosophically he makes some cogent points throughout this book. Personally I love what he writes about Southern California. Consider also his comments on life well lived:
"The clock provides only a technical measurement of how long we live. Far more real than the ticking of time is the way we open up the minutes and invest them with meaning. Death is not the ultimate tragedy in life."
Buy this book! Read it! You'll be thankful you did.
humor is good medicine.......2000-06-15
This book shows how remarkable and awesome the human spirit truely is. Cousins gives examples of how humor affected the body in a profound healing manor. After facing cancer and the gloom around the therapies, Cousins turned to humor to help fight the battle and overcame many obstacles in his way. Even those whose lives are not touched by cancer in some way can appreciate the benefits of a little humor therapy. Great book!

Definitely a keeper - Nice mix easy/hard recipes - all good.......2004-12-14
This cookbook is one of the 3 or 4 (of my two dozen or so) cookbooks that I keep out on the counter and keep going back to. It has an excellent variety of recipes, from simple ones with on-hand ingredients for every day to more complex, involved ones for something special.
One of the things I like best is Marcella's very precise instructions - she tells you how high to turn up the heat and for how long, how thinly to slice the garlic, etc. and she does so in a way that is very sensual and appealing to the smells and feels of the food. I also like her descriptions of the recipe and how it came to be...
for example, in her intro to the recipe for Fricasseed Chicken with Black Olives (a favorite), she talks about how her son invented it one night after seeing what was on hand, said "now all I need is a chicken" and how it reflects a young man's penchant for bold, strong flavors (black olives, vinegar, lemon).
Other favorites include simple tomato sauce, penne with mushrooms, and her tortas.
In summary, I have not had a bad meal from this cookbook!!
Precise Description of Italian Cooking Principles. Excellent.......2004-10-17
Working backward from Marcella Hazan's latest work, this book `Marcella's Italian Kitchen' is the third of Ms. Hazan's books I will be reviewing. Following Ms. Hazan's advice early in this book to pay very close attention to words and exactly what they say, I adduce (and confirm by a reading of many prefaces to the various recipes) that this book is less about traditional Italian recipes than it is about recipes collected by and prepared by Ms. Hazan in her own kitchen, personal or classroom, which are done in the Italian style. And, Ms. Hazan goes to very great lengths to define exactly what that Italian style is. She does this to a depth of detail which puts overshadows virtually all other popular American interpreters of Italian cuisine. That is not to say she disagrees with them. Part of my confidence in stating that Ms. Hazan is giving us the right stuff is based on my having read and heard the same themes from other respected authorities such as Mario Batali, Lydia Bastianich, and Nancy Harmon Jenkins. It means she both takes everything just one step further into the authentic soul of Italian cooking, and explains those steps in depth, leaving virtually nothing to the imagination or to an invocation of some sense of the spiritual as Ms. Grace Young does when she rhapsodizes over `wok hay' or `The Breath of the Wok' in a recent work.
Be clear that Ms. Hazan's devotion to an authentically Italian style of cooking does lead her to hold strong positions that violate some conventional American wisdom on Italian cooking. Some of these positions are easy to understand for anyone who has watched two or three `Molto Mario' shows, such as the banishment of bread flavored with butter and garlic to the realm of the inauthentic sham posing as `garlic bread'. True Italian garlic bread or bruschetta is always oiled with olive oil and not butter. And, the authentic article is grilled. A more difficult precept is the banishing of French style stocks from the making of Italian soups. I have even seen a review of her later book, `Marcella Cucina', criticize her strongly for this position, in spite of the fact that Batali, Bastianich, and Bugialli all agree with Ms. Hazan. It is easy to make this mistake, as there are probably tens of thousands of recipes in America that innocently build a suppa or ministre with chicken stock from a can. In better books, the authors probably recommend these soups be made with homemade STOCKS based on a recipe straight from their favorite French cooking authority. An even more surprising statement is when Ms. Hazan admonishes us not to add Parmigiano Reggiano to sauces based on olive oil. Even I find this a little hard to take, unless on understands this to mean that you do not flavor the final dish with both fresh olive oil AND freshly grated cheese. She even disagrees with my hero Mario in professing to use prefer only fresh tomatoes in cooking, and canned tomatoes, even San Marzano tomatoes are second best. My verdict on all of this is to go back to the title and remind you, dear reader, that Ms. Hazan is teaching us her interpretation of true Italian kitchen practice. If you accept her on that basis, she is simply the best there is writing in English.
If you are not happy with these constraints, consult the dozens of good books of recipes inspired by the Italian cuisine such as those from Lydia Bastianich, Jamie Oliver and Rogers and Gray of River Café.
Focusing on the `Marcella' in the title be sure to understand that many of the recipes in this book are Ms. Hazan's inventions. What makes this so delightful is that her stories about how many of these dishes came about match exactly the analysis of Tom Colicchio in `How to Think Like a Chef' where he says that chefs do not conceive of a dish then go out to shop for the right ingredients. Exactly the opposite is true. Most original dishes arise when the cook is faced with a limited set of available ingredients. `Necessity is the mother of invention' was never truer than when it is applied to the cook in the kitchen. And, all the invention is done while remaining true to the principles of the Italian kitchen.
Since Ms. Hazan how has five books on exactly the same subject, one can be concerned that one may be better than the others. Pending my review of her earliest books, I will say that there is some repetition of introductory information across volumes and some duplication of descriptions of basic techniques such as the making of fresh pasta, but there is no duplication of recipes. And, not only is there no overlap of recipes, each book presents the material in a somewhat different way, making the encounter that much more interesting. I will say that the lessons on fresh pasta making are a bit better in `Marcella Cucina' than they are in the present volume, as the newer book adds very good pictures to the text to guide the student. Also, the discussion of the foundations of Italian technique including the notion of `insaporire' is better in `Marcella Says' than in the current book. Yet, this volume contains many pages of general information and advice that is in neither of the other books I have reviewed.
Like her other books, recipes for pasta dishes are the stars, outnumbering all other recipes. Unlike `Marcella Cucina' where the pasta recipes were all about the sauces, the current volume matches the sauce to the pasta, giving the reader the whole dish. The very best things about the recipes are that they are spelled out in great detail, making them simple for even a novice. As Ms. Hazan does in every book, be warned that simple is not easy, but she takes you by the hand through each step.
Highly recommended.
Just Wondering Why.......2002-10-15
My very first impression as I opened the book was that the lettering was too small and very light. When you're cooking and are referring to recipes as you go along, big, bold, dark print is a lot easier to the eye especially as one gets older.
Just wondering why -- this point was not taken into consideration when the print was chosen. There was even a write-up on the special print that was used, though I found it to be inappropriate and rather impractical.
Also, I was about to make her pot roast recipe -- why does Marcella require us to use "chopped, canned, imported, plum Italian tomatoes" -- all 1-1/2 tablespoons of it? Why so little? Is it really worth opening up a whole can for that little amount? Why not just use the plain fresh plum tomatoes then?
Just wondering -- if it was a typo or incorrect, unedited material.
So far that was the only recipe I've checked. Thanks for listening to my comment.
Great Italina cookbook with substance.......2000-09-08
This is an excellent and wonderful book! While other Italian cookbooks tend toward fanfare and no substance this book is full of great recipes (I have tried about 20 of them and recipes were easy to follow and dishes are full of flavor. Each name of the recipe is listed in Italian and a American name is given (e.g. Fileto col Pamigiano, Tenderloine Fillet with Parmesan Cheese, hot red pepper and parsley). If you are looking for a good Italian cookbook easy follow with great recipes this is it. I have 60 cookbooks and this is one of my best.
Good section on ingredients and methods.......1999-04-12
It has excellent, very detailed section on ingredients and general rules of Italian cooking methods. I wish this section had been included in Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking to make the book more detailed reference. My suggestion is to buy Essential (probably you already have one if you are reading this comment) and read Kitchen at your local bookstore.
Amazon.com
Perhaps more than any other person, Marcella Hazan is responsible for bringing Italian cuisine into the homes of American cooks. We're not talking spaghetti and meatballs here--Hazan's cuisine consists of polenta, risotto, squid braised with tomatoes and white wine, sautéed Swiss chard with olive oil and garlic.... Twenty years ago, when Hazan first exploded into the American consciousness with The Classic Italian Cook Book and More Classic Italian Cooking, such recipes were revolutionary. With time, however, these classic dishes have become much-loved family favorites.
Now a new generation is ready to be introduced to Marcella Hazan's way with food, and in Essentials of Italian Cooking, Hazan combines her two earlier works into one updated and expanded volume. In addition to the delicious collection of recipes, this book serves as a basic manual for cooks of every skill level. Recipes have been revised to reduce fat content, and a whole new chapter full of fundamental information about herbs, spices, and cheeses used in Italian kitchens--as well as details on how to select specific ingredients--has been added. New chapters, new recipes--it's hard to ask for more than Essentials of Italian Cooking. But that didn't stop us. We're adding two Italian American New York favorites--Mario Batali's Simple Italian from TVFN's Molto Mario and Rao's Kitchen, a celebration of that unique Southern Italian American, red-sauce cooking that first made Italian cuisine accessible to so much of America. A gift of these three titles together will make any home cook sing an aria.

Watching a beloved pet age can be a painful process. Joints start creaking, tempers get short, and the sheer goofiness of the puppy you brought home years ago may disappear entirely. Your Older Dog makes this stage of your dog's life easier through some basic education. Author Jean Callahan has compiled more than 100 pages of information on exercise, nutrition, and common health concerns that you'll find helpful in easing your pup's journey from middle age to the end.
The book begins by walking you through the aging process, complete with average life expectancy for various breeds and a simple healthy-dog checklist. Clear skin and shiny coat? No unfortunate accidents after years of being successfully housetrained? Sounds like you've got a healthy dog. The section on age-related changes goes a bit deeper into specific problems to prepare for, such as urinary tract difficulties, periodontal disease, and arthritis, which are also discussed in detail later in the book. The chapter discussing alternative healing for canines covers herbs, homeopathy, traditional Chinese medicine, and chiropractors. Even if these treatments are difficult to find in your neck of the woods, the author provides helpful tips that you can try at home, such as applying a mint-filled collar for flea deterrence using nothing more than some fabric and some fresh mint.
Suggestions for exercise and nutrition will teach you ways to make sure your dog is having her changing requirements met. Like humans, dogs require fewer calories as they age, so you may need to examine her diet as well. Death and grieving are discussed sensitively, with tips for easing the process for all surviving family members. It may be true that all good things must end, but there is no reason they can't end well. --Jill Lightner

Everyone with a dog should own this book! Not a complete text but offers enough information to communicate with health care providers and gives the reader just enough background to research specific topics of interest.
The book is not just for aging dogs even though there are chapters on that subject.
The book is not attractive & updated photos would be great.

Book Description
"This is Hannah," Lynne Hugo introduces her chocolate Labrador retriever to an aged woman in a wheelchair at the Golden View Nursing Home. "Would you like to pat her?"
"I don't know," she responds warily. "Dogs are complicated."
So, of course, is life, especially as the years accumulate and the body declines. In fact, the most painful complications are those that Hugo hopes to ease with Hannah, her exuberant therapy dog. What Hugo receives in return, unexpectedly, is an outpouring of stories as the residents respond to Hannah’s antics and affection. As Hugo’s involvement deepens, she begins to see her own life and her care for her elderly parents in a new perspective. Interweaving the elders’ tales—of old loves and ancient dreams, abandonment and loneliness, and the struggle for dignity—with her own family’s story, she creates a richly textured collective portrait of the often-hidden world of the aged. At the same time, she crafts an eloquent meditation on the fundamental human need to nurture and remain connected to other people, to animals, and to the natural world.

My Sincere Thanks to Lynne Hugo.......2006-08-19
I am grateful to Lynne Hugo for her heartwarming and insightful book. She encouraged me to continue to visit nursing homes and Alzheimer patients with my toy poodle, Lucy, even though she is not trained to perfection. Lucy brings joy to residents and care providers. God has presented me with the opportunity to share my dog and I am proud to serve Him in this way.
Thought-provoking, funny, helpful: a winner of a book........2006-03-21
I can see why this book won a national writing prize. What a sheer pleasure to read. It's thoughtful, deeply considered and the language sparkles as the author deals with terribly difficult issues but helps us through them by injecting literally hilarious episodes at just the right moments. Marley and Me has nothing funnier than sections of this book. My dog and I are Delta Society volunteers, and I, too, have aging parents. Much of this helped me think about my own life as well as my parents' situations, and I'm really grateful that a friend recommended this book. Now I'm passing the favor on and giving this my most enthusiastic endorsement.
A book for dog & nature lovers. .......2005-08-16
An enjoyable book! I was moved emotionally by the connections of the dog therapy team, the residents they visited, and the nature around them. Nice symbolism showing how human life events parallel changes in nature.
Great book!.......2005-08-15
I throughly enjoyed reading "Where the Trail Grows Faint: A Year in the Life of a Therapy Dog Team" by Lynne Hugo. Lynne Hugo is masterful at blending the story of Hannah, her beautiful chocolate lab therapy dog, with the lives of the people who are in the nursing home, along with the lives of her own aging parents. Ms. Hugo has a beautiful way with words; her prose creates atmosphere and feeling....so much so that at the conclusion of the book, I immediately went to visit my own aging mother-in-law, who is in an assisted living facility. This book was clearly written from the heart!
Good reading, but not what I expected.......2005-08-10
I absolutely loved the first chapter. After reading it, I come to the conclusion it wasn't what I expected, though. Oh yes, it is definitely good reading.. but the reviews mislead me to think it was more about the dog than it was. If I had to sum it up, it was more about the woman and her feelings toward her own aging parents and many times comparing the experiences in a nursing home to how she feels about taking care of her own parents. Some of the things mentioned about the dog scared me... I can't count how many times she said that the dog forgot all its obedience training in the home. It would more often be off-leash, run up to residents... even pushing a person in a wheelchair backwards with its jump to the lap. She mentioned tossing balls and having the residents toss balls for the dog. Oftentimes the dog decided when it wanted to jump up on a bed with a resident. Everyone was giving the dog treats (which I think I read recently that one of the Therapy Orgs says no to treats *on the job*) I am sure there were a lot of good behavior that she just left out of the book... but if my own dog did these things, I would be re-thinking letting her work in a nursing home environment.
I did enjoy reading the book (it was colorful and eloquent), but was disappointed it wasn't what I thought it was. The one review said, "she includes all the extra techniques she figured out in the field to make them a better, more effective team." No, it did not. The only thing I came away with was that she needed to refine what she carries in her sack each time she comes to the home... a fuzzy ball, a container for the dog to drink out of, etc.
I do recommend reading the book, to get an insight on how one person *got involved* with the residents, but don't get it if you think it will alert you to some techniques to be a better team.

cute projects.......2003-07-25
I checked this book out from the library enough times that I decided it would be best to own it! I love the cute animal quilt projects. I've just made the sheep quilt so far. All the pattern/quilt strip pieces didn't fit together as well as I would've liked, but if you're an experienced seamstress, you can still make it/them work for you. I think the author could've done a better job with making the original cutting measurements work together without having to stretch pieces to make them fit. As I said, you can still make it work for you. These projects are all sewn in large strips, sewn together, then cut down to smaller sizes; then sewn together. So, in the end, you haven't had to cut a bunch of tiny squares; its a time saving way to sew quilts. And, everyone likes to save time. The quilt designs are adorable and true to Debbie Mum's style. If you've ever seen her calendar's, you know what I mean.
Very Easy Quilting.......2001-10-23
This book makes an excellent addition to any quilting library. It covers applique', tea dying, fabric selection, rotary cutting, and provides 10 tried and true quilting timesavers. Helpful hints for projects are sprinkled throughout the book.
All of the projects include clear, concise instructions and illustrations. The projects provide exact amounts of fabric to pre-buy. The illustrations in the book are very helpful and really motivate one to experiment.
This book truly takes the fear out of quiltmaking and you can easily do this as a beginner. All you need is the desire to sew the multitude of provided projects. I've made four of the projects out of the book with no difficulties and in a very short period of time.
Honestly, my greatest challenge with the book has been selecting the project to start on. There's just so darn many good ones.
A fun and easy way of quilting.......2001-09-06
This book is fabulous not only for the experimented quilter but also for the beginner. The instructions are easy to follow and the photographs of the finish product as well as the setting are inspirational. Debbie Mumm took advantage of her background as a designer resulting in quilts that are perfects in every sense. Her suggested color combinations are suitable for every taste. Since I bought this book I am always looking for her books. This book should be on every quilter's library.

Suitable for young and mature readers alike........2004-04-15
One of the key survival strategies for animals faced with difficult climates and conditions is migration; immediate threats from other animals can be escaped by running, flying, or swimming. Plants, rooted to the earth, must rely on adaptations that permit them to survive where they are. The fascinating mechanisms that plants use to stay alive in deserts, forests, alpine tundra, jungles, and in water are explained clearly with the aid of beautiful color drawings.
Readers will not only come to understand something of the hidden life of both familiar and exotic plants, but will learn how plants interact with their environments in the complex fabric of life on earth. Correct scientific terminology is introduced and explained, making this an excellent entry for youngsters into the fascinating worlds of botany and ecology.

Jim Delisle, Ph.D., offers practical, down-to-earth advice that will cause parents to reexamine the ways they perceive and relate to their children.
Delisle puts forth 10 "tips" to parents of gifted childrenideas that reflect attitude and approach and allow for introspection and change, rather than quick, do-it-tonight solutions. Some topics of interest include understanding a child's giftedness, working with the school system, dealing with perfectionism in gifted kids, and being adult role models for children. Along the way, stories from gifted children and their parents provide insight into the lives of these individuals.

Highly recommended for parents of gifted (and very bright) kids.......2007-04-24
Not really the book that I have expected, but it ended up being better than I expected.
The author analyzes different types of giftedness, gives many real life examples and quotes, talks about gifted adults - something that I haven't encountered yet in this type of literature - and in general helps to change your general attitude towards giftedness. For me, the attitude change (not "ten tips..."!) is the factor that makes easier to deal with many related to giftedness issues (academic, social, emotional). Just two examples of what turned out to be really helpful for me:
- list of phrases that most of us use all the time with gifted kids, but that should be avoided ("You are so smart, I expected better from you" - this is my favourite - unfortunately!)
- reference to couple of books "Philosophy for kids" and advice how to deal with questions of this type (again, how do YOU answer the question "Why does God allow murder?" from 6-years old?)
Highly recommended for all parents of gifted kids - and even more, for parents who are not sure whether their kids are gifted.
Highly recommended reading, especially to all new parents of a gifted child.......2006-05-04
Parenting Gifted Kids: Tips For Raising Happy And Successful Children by James R. Delisle (Professor of Gifted Education at Kent State University) is an informative and "parent friendly" reference for enabling a truly gifted child to expressively and productively achieve their life goals, develop sound character, and general enjoy their life. Examining overly excitable children, the type of gift granted to each child, working with the school system, dealing with perfectionist children, being a positive role model, building a child's character, and helping kids achieve their set goals and dreams, Parenting Gifted Kids is very highly recommended reading, especially to all new parents of a gifted child.

A plum tree in bloom.......2007-04-04
Recommended to me by a school librarian, this book was a sweet delight which I read to my child thinking to encourage her to enjoy poetry. We both enjoyed this book and its wonderful illustrations of Japanese life, learning about the sad life of Issa and what is behind some of his poems, especially as haiku are not as simple as they appear on the surface. While the story may be a bit intense for very young children, the book accomplishes its intention of providing an interesting and eye-catching introduction to haiku and the sensitivity to feeling and experience that helps create the art of poetry. It also carries an underlying message of how one can not only persevere through mistreatment and adversity but keep a caring and uplifted spirit. LOVED the author's informational notes at the end.

Haikus great but story of Issa not so good.......2006-11-18
The haikus in this book are excellent. They match beautifully with the illustrations. What a great way to introduce haiku to a young person (and an older person!)
My only disappointment is the interspersing of Issa's life into the work. It would have been better to have it as an author note at the end. The "story" part of Issa, I think, makes it difficult to give this as a gift or to share with children unless you are prepared to start addressing fears of mommy dieing when you (child) are three, having a mean stepmother that yells at you, etc.
Can we name Favorites? This must be in THE TOP TEN Books of HAIKU* ! .......2006-03-08
Kazuko Stone's watercolors accompany Matthew Gollub's with great style, and his text always pleases. Do you feel a childlieke innocence in the verses of ISSA? His mother died when he was three and perhaps his sadness is reflected in this verse:
"The new Year's first dream -- I see my village and wake to a chilly tear."
Four years later he had a step-mother who brought dissention to the household so that the father finally took the boy to a path leading to Edo (now Tokyo) when he was 17 years old.
Every person should experience during Lent some humor. This leads to the conviction that the writing of HAIKU is an appropriate theme for a Lenten retreat. These are obviously different but the interior of our hearts is where a sharing of philosophies can begin.
We should also experince during the Lenten Season thoughtful meditation aand a caring exchange, "TO CATCH ONE MEANINGFUL MOMENT IN TIME" - a quote from the author is something we should all try to achieve.
Reviewer mcHAIKU has a neighbor in the Indiana woods who titled her book "Swimming with Frogs" (isbn: # 0253217563) You will greatly enjoy her tribute to Nature in Brown County, and find a true urge to write HAIKU down in these hills. And a verse of Issa's will amuse you with his humorous explanation as to why people shouldn't come near melons!
Didn't Spend my Money.......2005-04-09
Based on what I saw about this book it seems the "editors?" "Authors?" of this children's book were hybridizing the engenious works of Issa for their own gain.
Not that it was conscious but I was searching for a SERIOUS collection of the works of Issa.
Yuck.
Cool Melons - Turn to Frogs!.......2001-07-31
This is an excellent account of Issa's life and poetry. This story goes through important stages of Issa's life and incorporates his poetry into the stages. This unique book explains how Issa succeeds as a poet even though he endures difficulties in his life. Children of all ages will enjoy the story and beautiful illustrations. I think the author and illustrator did a great job of working together to create a fine story abour this Japanese haiku writter. The best part of this book is the poems. The poems are written in English and also in Japanese. This book will capture your interest.
