Bob Buck may not be as famous as Charles Lindbergh, but he's well known among aviators for setting flight-distance records in the 1930s, flying a B-17 in the Second World War, and finally, becoming a commercial airline pilot who logged more than 2,000 trips across the Atlantic Ocean. North Star over My Shoulder is Buck's memoir of a life spent in the skies. He shares plenty of cockpit wisdom: "A copilot can make a trip or ruin it; get someone who talks too much, gripes about the company, tries to impress you, tells long and boring anecdotes, or is overly aggressive in suggesting ways to run the flight, and the taste is unpleasant." He also answers the question he says nonpilots are most likely to ask him: How do you overcome jet lag? "You don't," he says. Buck addresses offbeat subjects, too, such as what an airline pilot does when one of his first-class passengers is irate about the lack of caviar on a long trip. Readers fascinated by flight will enjoy this book, both for its historical perspective on advances in aviation ("a time no one will ever experience again") and the good advice that springs from almost every page ("sitting low tends to make you level off a little too high, while sitting up high tends to make you fly into the ground and not level off enough"). Pilots will appreciate this book, as will anybody who has ever wondered what it's like to fly a plane. --John Miller

    Book Description

It is rare to find one person whose life embodies the history of an industry the way Bob Buck's life encompasses the history of commercial aviation in America. Buck first flew in the 1920s, inspired by the exploits of Charles Lindbergh. In 1930, at age sixteen, he flew solo from coast to coast, breaking the junior transcontinental speed record. In 1936 he flew nonstop from Burbank, California, to Columbus, Ohio, in a 90-horsepower Monocoupe to establish a world distance record for light airplanes. He joined Transcontinental and Western Air (T&WA) as a copilot in 1937; when he retired thirty-seven years later, he had made more than 2,000 Atlantic crossings -- and his role had progressed from such tasks as retracting a DC-2's landing gear with a cockpit-based hand pump to command of a wide-body 747.

Buck's experiences go back to a time when flying was something glamorous. He flew with and learned from some true pioneers of aviation -- the courageous pilots who created the airmail service during flying's infancy. At the behest of his employer Howard Hughes, Buck spent three months flying with Tyrone Power on a trip to South America, Africa, and Europe. He flew the New York-Paris-Cairo route in the days when flight plans called for lengthy stopovers, and enjoyed all that those romantic places had to offer. He took part in a flight that circled the globe sideways (from pole to pole). He advised TWA's president on the shift to jet planes; a world expert on weather and flight, Buck used a B-17G to chase thunderstorms worldwide as part of a TWA-Air Force research project during World War II, for which he was awarded the Air Medal (as a civilian) by President Truman.

In North Star over My Shoulder, Bob Buck tells of a life spent up and over the clouds, and of the wonderful places and marvelous people who have been a part of that life. He captures the feel, taste, and smell of flying's greatest era -- how the people lived, what they did and felt, and what it was really like to be a part of the world as it grew smaller and smaller. He relates stories from his innumerable visits to Paris, the city he loves more than any other -- echoing Gertrude Stein's view that "America is my country, and Paris is my home town" -- and from his trips to the Middle East, including flights to Israel before and after it became a state. A terrific storyteller and a fascinating man, Bob Buck has turned his well-lived life into a delightful memoir for anyone who remembers when there really was something special in the air.

5 out of 5 stars Very well written history of aviation as viewed by Bob Buck.......2007-10-05

I found the book to be excellent. My father spent a career in what became TWA starting with TAT a few years before Bob Buck was hired into the merged airline. In fact, my father accompanied Bob Buck on the historic Rockwell polar flight. The book was so well written that I felt like I was getting a close up look at my father's environment over the years.

    5 out of 5 stars What a life! I wish I had known him..........2007-07-09

As an "old" TWA hostess, I was interested in Bob Buck's experience with the airline - and was treated to some very satisfying mutual memories. I loved knowing about what it was truly like to fly the DC-2's and 3's and the differences. I always thought they were a piece of cake - not so. My first plane ride was on a DC-3 - so I was enthralled with stories about the goings-on in the cockpit. Funny, we had no fear of flying at all - just figured we'd always get there safely. Little did we know that old Bob was up in the cockpit trying to figure out whether to try to go under the storm, over it or around it - and was planning possible landing sites other than our destination! I especially loved Bob's love affair with the 707 - as I felt exactly as he did - that we were so lucky to be a part of a life-changing experience - for ourselves and every airline passenger. If you love planes, and love to fly, you'll love the story of this extraordinary man's life. I just don't believe that people today will have the opportunity to live anything like the length and breadth of this man's life.

5 out of 5 stars Every one with the slightest interest in aviation will want several copies.......2007-01-03

My pilot friends are giving copies to their friends. Bob Buck tells an always fascinating, personal story covering most of the history of commercial aviation -- celebrities, people, planes, procedures, and WEATHER. Numerous photographs support the stories of this teen-age-record-holder-turned-airline-chief-pilot.

5 out of 5 stars North Star over my shoulder.......2006-04-18

I always had a dream of flying my own plane and 9 years ago at age 52 I did. Now 2000 hours of constant learning flying mostly my Mooney Bravo I still am excited by soaring aloft and traveling to places new and old. Bob Buck's wonderful memoir created from me a realization of how lucky we are to have had people like Bob, those willing to explore the new frontiers and make avaition a safe and dependable resource for us all. His telling of history and his life is both informative and insipiring. I recommend this book to anyone who loves history, loves flying and wants to read about it from an expert who lived it and loves it as much as anyone. Thank you Bob Buck and may you continue to inspire all. Live long and fly high.

3 out of 5 stars Better pilot than writer.......2005-05-23

No doubt Bob Buck had one of the more interesting flying lives: beginning in the 1920s and '30s, through WWII, and on to modern jets. But something about his writing style leaves me wanting more and never getting it. It's not just his occasional grammatical errors (mixing tenses, for instance); I fault his editor for those annoyances. Rather, it's his inability to fully convey the emotions of the dramatic moments he experienced. He describes events in somewhat detached tones and pale colors, concentrating more on facts and a textbook-like history, never really revealing his deeper thoughts about anything. Maybe he never had any? Being introspective myself, I prefer the Ernest K. Gann or Len Morgan or Gordon Baxter style. If you have all of their collections and want still more flying stories, then get this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for those concerned about toxins.......2006-05-05

The first edition of this book has been around since 1996. It is essentially the same book only this one has been expanded.

One of the best examples the author gives in the book of why we should be concerned about toxins is when she shows the exposures of an average female office worker on the typical day. The exposures are as follows:

Showering: chlorine in the water used to bathe
Clothing worn: fabric softener used, or maybe dry cleaned clothing that wasn't aired out
Toiletries used: deodorant, makeup, hair spray, or perfume
Food consumed: pesticide or fertilizer residue
Traveling to work: air pollution in the form of car exhaust, or pollen
At work: cleaning supplies, office furnishing or building materials outgasing, other indoor air pollution
Home: chemicals in cleaning supplies, tobacco smoke, animal hair or dander, dust mites, plant pollen, mold present in improperly ventilated kitchens and baths.

Who wouldn't be depressed reading that list? I think the items on that list touch everyone's life every day. When you add in the fumes from carpeting and the link to Kawasaki syndrome in kids, what are we suppose to do?

The author gives you lots of suggestions for reducing the level of exposure to toxins. I am particularly fond of the detoxification baths. I don't know if they are working, but it is a great excuse for a nice long uninterrupted soak in the bathtub. If you are looking for an excuse to have a sauna installed in your house that is included in this book as well.

This book is great for opening your eyes to potential toxins and outlining ways that you can reduce your family's exposure without having to move to Montana. I highly recommend this book and "Toxic Overload" by Dr. Paula Baille-Hamilton if you are interested in reducing your toxic exposure.

5 out of 5 stars Add this to your library.......2006-03-11

Detoxification is not something that is traditionally given much time in medical training. In fact, many in the medical profession will give you a blank stare if you mention the topic.

Granted, terms like "colon cleansing", etc. are commonly used terms. However, there is enough misinformation out there, that many of these techniques have gotten a bad name.

Dr. Krohn does an outstanding job describing and outlining the process. First she starts with a history of medical approaches used. Next she describes how "politics" help to shape the face of traditional medical practices.

As the book continues, the reader is taken through different ways that a person can be exposed to toxins and other problem substances.

Finally, the book finishes up with suggestions on ways the person can improve their health.

At times the reader hopes that more detail can be provided. Dr. Krohn does mention however, that there are times where these techniques are best left in the hands of a professional.

She does an excellent job however, of suggesting things the reader can do to improve their overall health. This book does a very good job outlying special challenges with children's health as well.

If you are interested in the history of detoxification, want to know exposure risks, and education yourself on ways you can improve your health then this is an excellent resource.

If you are looking for a step by step recipe approach to this, then you may want to look elsewhere. Dr. Krohn does share precise techniques at times. Other times, she provides more of an overview. Given the size of the resource however, providing a step by step explanation for every technique out there would probably add several volumes to an already rich, extensive work.

5 out of 5 stars Inviting pictures, easy to read text, great value for the price.......2006-10-19

I'm giving the book a paws up. The layout is very inviting -
spacious with lots of pictures and easy to read. From cover to cover,
the book probably takes about 2 hours to read. To perform all the
training and routines in the book would take a lifetime.

Some of the information is very general - clicker training on a single
page. However, the general information does includes the most
          important aspects of training concepts.

Much of the strength of the book is in the Dance Routines shown in the
later chapters. She's got routines for Star and Stripes, Singing in
the Rain, Puppet on a String, and others. She outlines the steps and
tricks in the routine and supplements the written description with
pictures. She suggests music to use with the routines, films to watch,
and tips for improving your performance.

The book would be a fabulous resource for a 4H club, anyone trying to
put together his or her first routine, or an expercienced freestyler
looking for some new ideas. A book you might refer to over and over, picking up something new each time. At the price you can't beat it.

I was captivated when I read in the local paper that a Florida group teaches their dogs dance routines. This was something I had to see. Now I find there is a book to teach you how to do this with your own dog.
What a challenge to train your dog to follow a dance routine with you.
Here's the book description from the author's website: "A step by step guide to freestyle which has grown into a highly competitive discipline requiring spot on sense of timing as well as obedience and agility.
In this superbly illustrated guide the author breaks down all the moves from the simplest to the more complex in an easy to read format.
Learn how to perform static, action and crowd pleaser moves.
This hard back book provides everything you need for you and your dog to become the star performers in this exciting sport."

                Book Description

A funny, profound book about the enduring wisdom of dogs, from the host of the enormously popular National Dog Show

Charming and hilarious, It's Okay to Miss the Bed on the First Jump is more than a mere celebration of man's best friend. In this lighthearted and reflective exploration of how and why dogs have served as some of our most valuable and enlightened teachers, well-known and well- loved actor/show host John O'Hurley (Seinfeld, Dancing with the Stars) shares lessons learned from his life with canine companions, including: Every 15 Minutes Is a New Day; Never Miss a Nap; When One Person Stops Petting You, Move On; A Cold Can of Meat Is Still a Feast; and You're Only as Big as You Think You Are, to name a few.

“Dogs, after all, have pure hearts, trusting natures, a zest for living, noble characters, and an ability to take things in stride,” writes O'Hurley in the book's introduction. “They can be counted on, and are pleasant companions. They know what's important, always. How many humans do you know about which you could say the same?” At once poignantly moving and laugh-out-loud funny, It's Okay to Miss the Bed on the First Jump is a book for the dog lover on everyone's holiday shopping list.

Anyone familiar with Mr. O'Hurley's Seinfeld-game show personality will recognize it immediately from this book. If you have a close friend who's a dog and enjoy humor you can relate to his stories. Makes a great gift. Warning! Do not read this book in public. People may give you strange looks when you burst out laughing, particularly at inappropriate times.

                5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2007-08-04

I read this book during a very difficult time in my life and it was absolutely the best medicine! I laughed so much that my then husband was ready to send me to the "funny farm". We can definitely learn a lot from our pets. John, since I read your book I take afternoon naps and feel much better! I own a supersized lazy dog, a wonderful Great Pyrenees.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us and thanks for the laughs!

5 out of 5 stars One great book for dog lovers!.......2007-07-28

I haven't read a book that was so much fun to read in a long time. For anyone that has a love of animals, especially dogs, this is a gem.

It brought back memories of my first dog and happy thoughts of the ones I have had since. It is quite obvious that the author has a very special place in his heart for "mans' best friend". I know that in my youth my dog was definately my best friend and one whose company I enjoyed the most!

Light and humorous. A good read for any dog lover. John O'Hurley has a great sarcastic sense of humor.

Every parent wants to help their daughter build the skills she needs to be happy and successful. How do you make it happen? Get her into sports! In Go Girl!, NBC sportscaster Hannah Storm helps you take an active role in encouraging and supporting your daughter's athletic interests, giving her the edge she needs to excel in life.

The benefits of sports for girls are numerous. Girls who play sports have higher levels of confidence and self-esteem and lower levels of depression. High-school girls who play sports are more likely to get better grades in school and to graduate. New research shows that as little as four hours of exercise per week may reduce a girl's risk of getting breast cancer as an adult by up to 60 percent.

Filled with advice and techniques from the nation's top experts, Go Girl! tells parents:

5 out of 5 stars The Life and Wisdom of a Great Educator and Buddhist Leader.......2000-03-13

Tsunesaburo Makiguchi is one of Japan's most significant yet perhaps least-recognized educators. His fame as the founder of Soka Gakkai has somewhat eclipsed his reputation as an educator. (Soka Gakkai International is now the largest Buddhist organization in the world with over 12 million members in 128 nations.)

Mr. Makiguchi had spent a lifetime developing his "value-creating" educational philosophy from his experience as teacher, principal, and teacher of teachers before he founded the Buddhist lay organization.

A man ahead of his time, Mr. Makiguchi made proposals over sixty years ago that are being made anew today. He was staunchly opposed to the rote memorization that was the backbone of Japanese pedagogy in his day (and largely remains so today), and he called for greater involvement by community members in the education of children.

The author, himself an educator, gives a clear and vivid picture of the magnitude and revolutionary quality of Mr. Makiguchi's theories. Until this book, Tsunesaburo Makiguchi has gone virtually unrecognized in the West because so little information on non-Western educators has been available in English. This work fills a need at a time when Mr. Makiguchi's impact on education and society is of increasing importance.
