Not as good as the other workbook.......2007-08-19
It is a good one, but I really am disappointed that it is not as good as her workbook that is titled Living With Depression and Manic Depression. I found that it was harder for me to relate to this workbook compared to her other workbook. I would recommend the other one.
Good information for living without depression or manic depression.......2007-05-19
I am another person who finds proper diet and exercise and other positive activities help those diagnosed with these illness, often overdiagnosed. I was told by uncaring people I would need medication all my life and encouraged by people who really listened to me rather than think I "had no insight into my condition" and helped me see myself as the normal person I am and do positive things without depending on medication to live a good ordinary life. This has good suggestions for that. I only don't agree that once diagnosed depressed or manic depressed or bipolar or any other mental illness that you need medication for the rest of your life as so many are told nowadays.
Living Without Depression and Maniac Depression: A workbook for maintaining Mood Stability.......2006-07-28
This book was not as helpful as I had hoped. It does contain legal information that was helpful, and legal papers to fill out in case of emergency. The rest of the worksheets were pretty basic and I dont think if I had the change to buy it again, that I would.
Pensbybruno.......2004-08-18
I ordered this book used from a private seller. Not only was the book in the condition promised but it arrived well before the time when I expected it to.
Excellent Resource With Qualifications.......2000-10-19
This book helped me immensely as I was coping with major depression. I couldn't stop crying, feeling sorry for myself and being completely terrified of the total loss of control in my life. The book examines many aspects of wellbeing, and is BEST in providing practical suggestions and solutions while being sensitive to a very diverse audience (uraban/rural/old/young..). however...the book does have a tendency of making you feel too sorry for yourself. I am an adventurous, intelligent, sensitive person, and depression crippled my feelings. The book seems to suggest that "stability" is better than extreme emotions or living with too much adventure. I believe you can radically transform your life - you just need enough motivation to overcome repeated setbacks. Use this book in conjunction with some motivational reading that charges you up. Also, the book spends a lot of time on medication. I decided NOT to use any medication, and managed to restore my serotonin levels by daily exercise and proper nutrition. The book does stress the importance of natural remedies to depression, but seems to suggest medication is an unavoidable necessity. This isn't the case. Read "Prozac Backlash" or "Beyond Prozac" (forget the authors), which discredit this culture of chemical dependency to get better. You CAN get well. Stay focussed, and use the book's suggestions to eliminate triggers. Happy recovery!

A well laid out and focussed primer in kitchen design.......2000-09-25
This must be the best value kitchen design on the market. It looks at basic design concepts, the work triangle, lighting, color and storage. It compares well with some considerably more expensive texts. It provides an overview suitable for anyone designing or changing their kitchen. It does not cover constructional aspects in any depth but, there are other books which cover this. Buy this book first!
Book Description
Weighs costs and benefits of doing projects yourself versus hiring a professional.
Customer Reviews:
Helped Me Tremendously.......2002-12-31
I used this book to plan my own kitchen and it helped me avoid mistakes. I was very tight on space in my kitchen/dining area, therefore every inch counted. It gives great guidelines for minimum space requirements. For example, it tells you how much space is needed between a wall and a table; how much space is necessary for each person at a table; how much countertop space should be left by the refrigerator or near the cooktop; how wide an island should be; how much space is necessary for the aisle in a kitchen so 2 people can work, etc.
Also included is assessing your needs and taking an inventory of your current kitchen which I found useful.
Other sections such as choosing fixtures and appliances or selecting materials weren't as beneficial to me personally, but overall I would highly recommend this book to someone planning their own kitchen - it gives some good solid guidelines and things to consider when planning a kitchen.
Great Basic Design Book.......2000-08-05
If you are beginning to think about remodeling your kitchen, read this book first! This book takes you through the basic steps of redesigning your kitchen, covering options for design, layout, storage, and appliances. The kitchens pictured are stunning, and run the gamut from Parade of Homes/celebrity level to actually affordable.
I was able to see some wonderful options that are realistic, along with a couple dream items I may splurge on. While I have bought other design books and magazines since, this is still my favorite. It made me excited about remodeling!

The Agnelli Gardens at Villar Perosa - a Must Have.......2000-12-15
The stunning photos of the Agnelli Gardens span the four seasons and include shots that have been displayed on folded pages to open up over two or four pages, which give the photos extra depth. It was impossible for me to choose a favorite among them, but they sure made me wish I could go and visit the gardens first hand. The narrative was written in a personal and romantic style which made it easy to read, and was punctuated with monochrome and color photos of the house and its occupants - with beautiful children of course! The history of the property and its development spans two centuries and is told in the context of the family and the world around them, which makes it far more interesting than if it had been written only to address garden plans and project progress. To my suprise, even though the gardens are on a grand scale, I found some ideas which could be put to good use in my own garden environment. In short this lovely book did not disappoint, is well worth purchasing and keeping close at hand to look at often.
Book Description
Smiling at Shadows is an insightful and honest account of the often difficult path to adulthood that a child living with autism must face. It is also the story of two parents who learned how to step into their child's world and draw him out into their own. An engaging story, this book is also a valuable resource for therapists, educators, and medical practitioners. More importantly, for parents and family members, it portrays the heartache and joy that families living with autism experience. The book shows families how to maintain hope and how to share in their child's life and happiness.

Light & Shadows.......2007-06-26
When Dane Waites was born in 1974, tolerance towards autism was just starting to move out of the shadows and into the light. His behavior was autistic from infancy; he smiled at trees and at the shadows they made on his walls. Largely nonverbal, he reached some milestones at a later rate, e.g. mastering toileting at age 7.
The boy also celebrated his first Christmas at age 7. The Waites, wanting him to enjoy Christmas as his peers did, taught him about Santa. Junee Waites even said that once introduced, she feared Santa would be with them forever. By the time Dane reached his teens, he accepted the explanation that Santa only comes to younger children. Dane's poignant comment, "I'm too old for Santa, right" makes one feel a tad sad for him. One cannot help but wonder if Dane still believed. I think another approach would be to tell him, "Dane, Santa is fun pretend and a game many people play with their children as a Christmas tradition" or whatever verbiage got through to him. The remote possibility that Santa might remain an enduring belief far past that of his peers was unfortunate and in which case, it seems the honest approach would be better. Fortunately for all, Dane learned to open gifts without fear of the unknown and participate in holiday activities.
Dane was enrolled in a mainstream kindergarten and it was there he met his lifetime friend, Jenny. She accepted Dane unconditionally; she said that she knew he could talk and when she asked him her name, he said, "Jenny." She was his defender and protector; a photograph of the pair at Dane's 5th birthday party shows Jenny at his side, ready to go to bat for him at any time. I just loved that part.
Jaeger, the German short-haired pointer was another faithful protector Dane enjoyed. The beautiful dog (1983-1992) was an important part of Dane's life and rarely left his side. Her untimely death might make you cry, but you will certainly be cheered by the strides Dane made.
Dane's immediate community accepted him as well. There was a large Italian community in his town and he learned to make many Italian dishes; Junee took conversational Italian and out of this, many friendships were made. Dane was quickly and readily absorbed and accepted by his friendly neighbors; from these friendships came lasting bonds and an abiding respect for Italian food, language and culture.
Dane's world expanded tremendously; the Waites took Dane on trips and moved twice during their son's boyhood. Dane was happiest when outside and enjoying nature. Luckily a farm family with 3 children had him work with them on their farm and Dane thrived in that environment. He also got to travel to the Fiji Islands and appreciated Fijian culture. I like the way he took an open interest in other people.
Junee Waites is wonderfully candid about life with Dane and working within his challenges. She is a person I truly admire and her unflagging faith in her son along with the kind nuns and priest who also taught him and helped him understand and appreciate his faith truly warms the heart. I loved the part when Dane received his First Communion at age 10 and the priest who wrote a lovely account of this in a book. Dane's spiritual development is nicely chronicled as well; an especially moving account of this was when Dane told a man in a wheelchair he would pray for him. Dane also insisted on bringing apples to feed homeless people in a neighborhood park.
The Waites' odessy with autism came full circle when they encountered Jenny, Dane's boyhood friend in a restuarant. By then the manager of the place, Jenny told them how she understood about Dane and knew how to reach him as only a compassionate peer could. That was my favorite part along with Dane's First Communion.
Dane's travel and spiritual development no doubt helped him become a rather well rounded young man. He also demonstrated physical prowess in early adulthood when he took up running; marathon biking and weight lifting. Although still autistic, Dane continues to remain an active, thriving member of his society and has held down jobs since the age of 14.
Junee Waites provides readers with rich descriptions of the parts of Australia where she and her family lived; readers are treated to the places that they visited as travelers. To make a good thing even better, a list of resources as well as descriptions of resources available in Australia are provided. This is truly an outstanding book. It makes me think of the hymn, "On Eagle's Wings" and the song "You Are the Light of the World," as Dane emerged from shadows into the light of conversing and providing explanations of his experience with autism.
wonderful and inspirational.......2006-01-14
I read this book from cover to cover and then I read it all over again. I am a mother of a child with special needs (including autistic traits)and know of many others with young ASD children. This is a book I could recommend to them, for the insight it offers into both autism and a parent's journey. I learned so much, began to see life through the eyes of the ASD child and to understand why he acted as he did, and related it to much of what my friends' children did, or my own. The mother's love shone throughout the book yet she was very honest about how she felt and how hard that journey was at times. Always though, it was a book of hope and of love and remained positive throughout.
Like the previous reviewer, I too would like to write to the author to say how enormously helpful this book is. It should become an ASD classic, to inform and inspire parents, professionals, the general public - and those with ASD themselves.
touching and inspiring.......2004-04-20
Thank you so much for this book. Junee is inspiring and warm, her love for her son and respect for his rights is uplifting for any parents dealing with the ups and downs of raising a child with autism. I am a single mother of two autistic children and while reading this book I was touched beyond words, I hope one day to inspire other parents as Junee has for me and many more parents around the world. Is there any way of emailing her or atleast a way for me to say thank you to her and let her know how much she has touched my family?

heartwarming.......2000-01-15
Kathie Lee seems to be a very involved mother. She is not afraid to discuss Cody's bowel functions in detail. Everything about Cody is cute. Every detail. A must have book!
Unintentionally Hilarious.......1999-04-29
Poor Kathie Lee. Her book is designed to show us that she is such a sweet kind loving attentive mother. If you read the book with any degree of attention, you will see that she is a very disturbed woman, and that dear little Cody is well on his way to serial-killerdom.
Book Description
Kazuko Kuramoto was born and raised in Dairen, Manchuria, in 1927, at the peak of Japanese expansionism in Asia. Dairen (Port Arthur) was an important colonial outpost on the Liaotung Peninsula; the train lines established by Russia and taken over by the Japanese, ended there. When Kuramoto's grandfather arrived in Dairen as a member of the Japanese police force shortly after the end of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, the family's belief in Japanese supremacy and its "divine" mission to "save" Asia from Western imperialists was firmly in place. As a third-generation colonist, the seventeen-year-old Kuramoto readily joined the Red Cross Nurse Corps in 1944 to aid in the war effort and in her country's sacred cause. A year later, her family listened to the emperor's radio broadcast ". . . we shall have to endure the unendurable, to suffer the insufferable . . . unconditional surrender."
Manchurian Legacy is the story of the family's life in Dairen, their survival as a forgotten people during the battle to reclaim Manchuria waged by Russia, China, and Korea, and their subsequent repatriation to a devastated Japan. Kuramoto describes a culture based on the unthinking oppression of the colonized by the colonizer. And, because Manchuria was, in essence, a Japanese frontier, the Kuramotos lived a freer and more luxurious life than they would have in Japan-one relatively unscathed by the war until after the surrender.
As a commentator Kuramoto explores her culture both from the inside, subjectively, and from the outside, objectively. Her memoirs describe her coming of age in a colonial society, her family's experiences in war-torn Manchuria, and her "homecoming" to Japan-where she had never been-just as Japan is engaged in its own cultural upheaval.
Customer Reviews:
Manchurian Legacy.......2004-11-23
Recently I was given this book to read by a friend who is preparing to teach a university course on Japanese culture and women's narrative. I am voraciously reading the books that she is considering for her course and giving her feedback. I couldn't put this book down and cried at the end. What more can one say? I sit here now as a foreigner living in Japan and find this book offers me a window into Japanese history, culture and the voice of women that is not normally acknowledged. Everyone should read this book.
Popular Memoir.......2000-04-27
Manchurian Legacy is the book,I wished that I could have read when I was in the sixth grade.Readers of that age group could easily identify with the character of Kazuko as a young woman. It is rare to find a book that can appeal to both young and old readers. The author, Kazuko Kuramoto apologizes for her writing, as English is her third language. I believe, this is what makes the book so readable. She does not bog the reader down with flowery language. What Kazuko does give the reader is a feeling of what it was like to have lived in Manchuria as a colonialist before and doing WW II.The real charm of the book is that it does not assume the reader has any knowledge of the historical events that shaped the narrative.A brief explanation that doesn't bog down the story gives you a context to understand and enjoy her memoir. The immense popularity of a book, "Angela's Ashes" shows that readers have a desire for personal stories of the ordinary man. Kazuko's story deserves to be read by as wide a audience as "Angela's Ashes"
