Up Close Viet Nam Memoirs.......2000-04-24

First of all, let me confess that my remarks are not entirely objective since I was a member of Captain Jackson's Mike Company during his command. His recollections are far clearer than mine, perhaps due to our very different stations. You see, Captain Jackson was a 30 year-old Marine officer with six years experience, while I was a 19 year-old PFC and LCpl, operating as a grunt rifleman and radioman in "Mike-2-Charlie."

I was fascinated by Jackson's account the circumstances leading up to his entry in the Marines, and his very remarkable career as an officer prior to his tour in Viet Nam. Captain Jackson provides the reader with a clear picture of life in Mike Company in those days, although from a quite different perspective than I had.

One difference of opinion I have with the author is his assessment of my Platoon Commander. Captain Jackson describes an incident in which the Lieutenant beats a Marine on the back with a steel bar, but dismisses the event as the officer merely trying to admonish the young man without really inflicting any pain. Well, I witnessed more than one incident where this officer either kicked or beat men in the head with a steel helmet in his hand. The opinion of the men under his command was that this "warrior" was a vicious and arrogant prima donna.

While the book will be quite interesting to students of the war in Viet Nam or those who were participants, the very poor (or nonexistent) editing done by the book's publisher is quite distracting. Virtually every page contains errors in punctuation, spelling, word usage, etc. My background as a Mike Company Marine serving under Captain Jackson allowed me to easily ignore these small issues. All in all, a very interesting and readable book.

For those who have read "Guess What Came to Dinner", this book adds another small but important layer to solving bug problems. It also provides info about a lot of products the author is selling, but I believe she is on the right track. Don't waste your money...........2005-06-30

ParasiteRex is an interesting book on all the types and varieties of parasites. That book I recommend. This lady lists a few parasites and then preaches a great deal about 'God's organ' and 'Gods diet'... 'God wants you to eat this way...' etc. I'm not quoting verbatim or course ha ha but you get the idea. So I guess if you are Buddist or Muslim you better convert. She seems like a nutcase preacher not a scientist or even a good councelor. *and writes one dull read!*

I do believe in internal cleansing. A product that I feel has worked well for me is at [...]: a total colon and parasite cleansing system. Their ads make it all sound as if everyone has a weird experience, expelling large worms and going to the toilet 8 times a day but my experience was very normal. Might be the benefits are a placebo effect but what the heck..
I use their probiotics and digestive enzymes too. Reading their website seems more informative than this book "Every body has parasites" Do your self a favor and pass on this one. ONe good thing: it is really a tiny book and you can read it in about 20 minutes so if you choose to waste your money you won't be wasting much of your time.

Since someone had asked for solution / options for parasite removal ..here is something useful to readers....

Look out for competitive products which has the bark "Cascara Sagrada Bark" which is not recommended by lots of nutritionists as it causes unwanted diarrhea etc. Here is a warning from one product which contains Cascara...

Informative, BUT.......2003-09-17

This book has very detailed information on ALL sorts of parasites. It really made me aware of how many are around and IN me!
BUT it really leaves no remedy to rid yourself of these nasty things except to buy the line of supplements sold by the author's company. And they are expensive!
I was dissapointed that there were no other supplement reccomendations.
It left me hanging.

Take it from a cook that has tons of cookbooks. This is one of my all time favorites. All of the recipes I've tried have been wonderful, healthy, and a big hit. People always ask me for the recipes. I've made the shrimp and grits casserole, chinese fried rice, tiramisu, bbq shrimp and others. I've even given it for gifts and everyone loves it. The layout and photography are also very well done.

This is a great book. I have it on my coffee table because the photographs are so beautiful but it holds the secret to making yourself look like a party planner and a cook without difficulty. The menu suggestions make entertaining a pleasant experience and the Mexican Fiesta is my favorite. However, I am going to use Holly Clegg's ideas for my Superbowl Party in January to impress my guests and family. This is really a "MUST" for every kitchen. You will make a lasting impression!

I think this book yet small but very objective and opens the right tunnel to deal with others in very basic and understandable way especially with our teens. The way it suggests is a new one to deal with kids that give the confidence to both parents and teens the right to take the responsibility and accept the consequences. .

I too have met the author--this was several months before the book was published. I am honored to have had the opportunity to get to know Jennie and her remarkable family. She does indeed live what she preaches.

The best thing about the exchange system is that it can be applied to all relationships--as the book states, "All relationships are exchanges." It has made me aware of the compromises I make with other people every day. This is a valuable teaching tool that empowers us to change our relationships with others.

She's Been There!.......2000-06-14

I wanted a book that would offer straightforward, practical advice. This one did not disappoint me. I picked it from among a group of others dealing with the same topic. What drew me to "A Little Secret for Dealing with Teens" was the fact that it grew out of the author's experience; it goes way beyond theory. It was obvious to me when I read it that Ms. Hernandez-Hanks lives what she preaches. She gave plenty of examples from her dealings with her own kids.

I read the book in one sitting and felt instant relief - here was a simple method I could sink my teeth into. What I liked the most was the way it takes the focus off trying to fix my teenager as a person and puts the focus on our day-to-day interaction. I don't have to continue to give everything on earth to my teenager and get nothing in return.

Someone once said, "You have to lie down to be a doormat." This book gave me the boost I needed to get back on my feet and put some balance into our exchanges. Thank you, Jeannie!

Finally--A Book on Teens that's Realistic!.......2000-05-04

I had the opportunity to meet with the author in person and meet a few of her children. It is obvious that her "exchange" ideas work! My husband and I have already started to implement the ideas of the author with my own children, both under two. I also believe that teachers would benefit using these ideas, as I have with my sixth grade students.

What A Way to Spend A War.......2002-08-03

The Navy nurses who were imprisoned in the Philippines have a great story to tell, and this book recreates the strange and depressing life they had to share all those years. Never knowing what the next day would bring, or if they were ever going to be rescued, these brave young women survived terrible starvation,and malnutrition with great spirit and fortitude. I know some of these nurses, having written about them in No Time For Fear: Voices of American Military Nurses in World War II. Dorothy Danner's story is included, and I will never forget her voice, telling how they continued to be Navy Nurses to other prisoners, despite their own hardships.
