Book Description
“Crane’s book is quite probably destined to become the standard text.”—Simon Winchester, The New York Times
Gerhard Mercator lived in an era of formidable intellectual and scientific advances. At the center of the exploratory vortex were the cartographers who were painstakingly piecing together the evidence to create ever more accurate pictures of the planet. Mercator was the greatest of all of them. His inspiration—the map—solved the dimensional riddle that had vexed cosmographers for so long: How could the three-dimensional globe be converted into a two-dimensional map while retaining true compass bearings? His resulting projection revolutionized navigation and has become the most common worldview. For the first time, people were able to see the world on paper and their place in it.
Nicholas Crane, a geographer himself, has combined a keen eye for historical detail with a gift for vivid storytelling to produce this masterly and highly acclaimed biography of the man who mapped the planet.
Customer Reviews:
Thoroughly researched, almost painfully detailed.......2006-06-22
Gerard Mercator was one of history's great cartographers, and some of the contributions he made, in particular the "Mercator projection" method of representing a 3-dimensional planet on a 2-dimensional map, have stood the test of time and are still in use today. He was also a very respectable human being, with an unrelenting work ethic and incredibly high standards for his work. His strong personal convictions allowed the son of a cobbler to become something of a celebrity throughout Europe.
In addition to being an extremely comprehensive biography of Gerard Mercator, Nicholas Crane's book proves equally interesting as a history lesson on 16th century Europe. The Reformation, and the efforts to quell it, influenced the work of Mercator and other scientists of the time, and were responsible for Mercator's uprooting and imprisonment and nearly saw him executed for heresy. The state of mapmaking is another intriguing subject, as it involved a surprising amount of guesswork and reliance on ancient sources.
Readers of Mercator will not fail to notice the tremendous amount of research that Crane put into his book. Considering that the events recorded occurred more than 400 years ago, the level of detail is sometimes astonishing. Not only can Crane tell the reader about secret Protestant meetings, he can tell you where they were held, who attended, and even the occupation of each of the attendees. Unfortunately, the minutiae can become overwhelming and often make Mercator a difficult book to read.
I would recommend this book primarily to those who have an interest in the history of cartography or who are generally interested in the history of Mercator's era. For more casual readers, myself included, the book is a challenge to read and the rewards are not quite commensurate with the effort.
Mercator el Hombre.......2005-07-08
Interesante y constructiva visión del hombre que dío las bases de la cartografía mundial, una muy buena y completa biografía de un geografo mundial
At times more cartographic history than biography.......2004-10-04
A good biography gives you not only a sense of the person, but also of the place. The very best can leave you believing the person a cousin, or even a distant brother or sister - that sense of person and place magnified almost to familial relation. I have found such books an excellent adjunct to the study of history. Not the least because they bring color and life to the sometimes dry and academic prose wielded by so many historians. Nicholas Crane's, "Mercator " is at times a lively look at the life and achievements of Gerard Kremer (known to most as Mercator); with more emphasis placed on achievement than on character.
The book begins appropriately with Mercator's birth. Crane's style is generally fluid throughout the entire work, but I found myself rereading the first two or three chapters because of what seemed to be inconsistency in dates. It turned out to be more the long expositions on current affairs that Crane sprinkles throughout than any chronological errors. The other problem I encountered was his occasional use of commodity prices to explain current conditions with little other context than implication. How much a particular item costs is useful to the extent that the reader knows such other information as how much the average worker earned in a month, or a year, and the cost of other basic necessities. Crane often fails to provide this context. Once past the bumpy beginning the rest is pretty much smooth sailing.
There are plenty of color and b&w plates. But since most of the originals are large wall-sized maps or enormous globes (at least by the standards of today) the reproductions are nearly useless for detailed examination. They are nonetheless beautiful. Mercator's innovations Crane explains textually, but the lack of useful diagrams makes understanding difficult. This is perhaps a criticism for the publisher rather than the author. The cost of including color plates and diagrams may have been prohibitive - but in that case I would have rather had less breadth and more depth i.e. fewer items reproduced but with each spread over more than one plate to permit detailed study.
"Mercator" sometimes reads more like a history of 16th century cartography than a biography of Gerard Mercator, due perhaps to insufficient primary source material. And that is my most significant criticism - that it loses incisiveness by attempting to cover both subjects rather than allowing his life to take center stage with place as a backdrop. Crane's biography will not take its place beside Ron Chernow's, "Titan" or H.W. Brands, "The First American" as one of the very best. But it is still a pleasant read and aside from my literary criticisms I have no reason to doubt Crane's scholarship. Consider it more of an appetizer than an entrée.
Great Geographer, Mediocre Book.......2004-08-30
There is no doubt that Mercator was a great geographer. Among his achievements were: the projection bearing his name, the first modern Atlas, and even the naming of North America. He played an important role in the amazing successes and adventures of the Age of Discovery. He truly was an amazing man.
Having said this, I found Crane's book to be lacking. I thought that the book was well researched and well grounded, but the delivery was poor. When buying a popular history book, in addition to the facts I expect a gripping story, masterfully told. However, Crane's writing style is dry and while the book is filled with names, dates, facts and figures the story telling is simply not there. Crane often gets bogged down in minute details that are distracting, dry and are simply not important to the story he is trying to tell.
In short, this may be a good history book, but it is not a book that I would recommend for the typical reader of POPULAR history.
Unfair to Brazil.......2004-02-08
The man who figured out how to make maps of the globe flat and made us think Brazil was smaller than Greenland.
A problem with reviewing a history book for a non-professional is that we can't be sure how accurate it is and we have to leave that kind of review to the historians. I enjoyed it but it is a long densely packed 320 pages. At that length I think he could have given us a little more technology and more lucid explanation of the mathematical problem involved. I would have liked more detail of how the globes were made. Since some of them survive this should be feasible. He describes some of Mercator's predecessors and might have explained more about Ptolemy's maps. But I quibble; it's a massive achievement, lucid and enjoyable.

Customer Reviews:
excellent wine cellar overview.......2007-06-09
Covered much more history etc than I was interested in. He does an excellent job and it is a decent read. It goes over the basics do's and don't if you're interested in constructing your own cellar.
However, I found google search and wine refrig web sites to be far more productive especially Rosehill located in Canada. Great website for practical info.
Not worth the money.......2007-05-23
I was disappointed with this book. Overgeneralized suggestions with no real information on how to make the wine cellar i.e. the actual wood, plastic or whatever it is that makes the place to actually put the wine. I had been hoping for suggestions, ideas, photo's and sources for storage. Instead I got a rehash of information from other books.
Good, solid information.......2005-11-11
Easy-to-read book about building and maintaining a wine cellar. Great tips and the author discusses things to consider that I would have never thought of. A nice book if you plan to build your own wine cellar.
An useful and enjoyable read!.......2004-12-07
This book is an easy read, perfect for relaxing by a warm fire while drinking a favorite glass of wine. Golberg's personal experiences and stories are entertaining while providing useful and educational information about wine, storage (cellaring), glassware, and general wine stuff. This casual book would be a great gift to a wine lover, or a 'carry on the airplane' book for yourself. Very nice font and paper that is easy on the eyes!

Great book
No color pictures.......2006-12-08
I just received this book. I find it quite outdated. The drawings and illustrations are poorly done. There are only a few black and white pictures. Just beware that this is a 1998 book and I am sure you can find a more updated horse book than this one.
Absolute must for new horse-lovers!.......2006-10-05
If you're considering doing ANYTHING with a horse in it, get this book. It's by far the most complete book on basic horse health, stabling, activities, breeds, etc. (And I do mean "basic".) Would have been five-stars for a glossary.
Horsey Lovers.......2006-07-22
My daughter wants us to buy her a horse. We didn't have a clue what to look for and this horse catalog gave us a thorough preview. We didn't fathom the expenses or the responsibilities of caring for a horse. An encyclopedic eyeopener that prepared us for reality.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to set up and organize proper, clean, safe and efficient care for horses. The pictures are great, and make it a lot easier for the beginner to visually see what works. It's an excellent resource!

Health horses.......2005-09-21
I have 1 indoor arena, 1 covered arena, and can stall up to 100 horses. Cherry Hill writes in an easy to understand and very articulate manner information that anyone owning from one to One Hundred horses should read.
She has a keen and very healthy insight with a common sense approach to horses. I was lucky enough to meet her at "Road To The Horse" where she was one of the prestigious judges, and very impressed with her down to earth and friendly attitude. She has a true passion for horses and what is in their best interest.
I have at least 6 of her books and plan on purchasing the rest as time & money allow. You will get your moneys worth from her.

Not quite what I was looking for.......2000-04-25
I bought this book hoping that it would have information that would be useful to both me (moderate horse experience) and my husband (no horse experience). It turned out to be too basic for me and overwhelming for him. It would be a great book for someone wanting a broad overview of the horse farm business. It was very well written and contained loads of information - just not exactly what I was looking for this time.

Customer Reviews:
Many Useful Projects.......2005-10-14
I found many projects I wanted to make in this book. So far, I have made the beanie hat, baby top with seed stitch trim, child's smock and beaded mocassins. Generally, I found the instructions easy to follow. The baby designs are adorable. THe only project I had some trouble with were the mocassins. The beads were too small to slip onto the yarn and knit the way the instructions called for so I just sewed them on afterwards (which is how some of the beads were supposed to be done anyway.) The smock pattern took some getting used to and I wrote out the pattern rows on individual note cards so I could flip them over and know which row I had to do next. I would recommend this book to new and experienced knitters.
Impossible-to-read typeface.......2005-09-15
This book has clear and precise photographs and knitting techniques. The problem is that the typeface chosen is so hard to read, making it almost impossible to follow the patterns. The font is too fine and too faded to read clearly. I found my eyes were straining to read the opaque font. When I gave the page more light, the shine on the page completely obliterated the text. Very frustrating!
Delightful baby/kid patterns and fun texture knitting.......2004-07-22
I am not a color knitter so I appreciate the emphasis this book places on texture. As a novice, I found the stitch glossary informative but I don't think you could learn to knit w/ just this book. All the patterns specify her special yarn, but at the back of the book there was a glossary that gave weight information. The baby/child patterns are adorable (simple cap, seater, cable cardigan) and do-able and there is a beutiful texture sampler afghan that I am excited to try. This book is a staple in my knitting library.
Great for knitters with some experience.......2001-11-29
If you want to learn to knit, this is not the book for you.
I gave this book 4 stars because I had heard about it being a great book for learning to knit. I bought it for myself for the Debbie Bliss' patterns and also to check it out first before I gave it to a friend as a first knitting book. I decided that it wasn't thorough enough in the learn-to-knit area so I sent her "How to Knit" instead. I always enjoy Debbie Bliss' patterns, she can make something so simple look so wonderful.
I have learned some new techniques from this book. I am looking forward to trying out some of the patterns.
Wonderful!.......2001-07-28
Like all of Debbie Bliss' books, the Workbook takes you through a variety of projects to concentrate on different techniques. Every project is simply gorgeous, and takes you from simpler/beginner projects to more advanced/difficult ones. You'll find things for children, for yourself, and for your home.
You might be tempted to teach yourself from this book, but I would recommend starting with "How to Knit" instead, which provides an excellent step-by-step course for new knitters. After you have worked through the basics, pick this up to help you perfect advanced techniques and embellishments. Speaking of embellishments, the chapter on embroidery is great! My favorite project is the embroidered jacket, made with denim yarn. I can't wait to make it!
As always, Debbie Bliss provides clear instructions, beautiful photographs, and inspiration for knitters of all skill levels. She also gives useful advice on making up and caring for knitwear, which are critical to having your work look it's best for years to come.
One caution to anyone interested in making plus-size garments: the women's patterns are designed in sizes 32-38 (roughly x-small through large), so you may have to adapt patterns if you wish to make other sizes.

Book Description
With its luxurious design and captivating text, this book brings to life a charming, extravagantly talented artist.
One of Victorian England's most charismatic characters, Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) painted and wrote with equal passion. He was similarly passionate in his personal life: his ethereal artist-wife, his earthy blond mistress, and the ravishing Jane Morris are all immortalized in his voluptuous images. The melodrama of Rossetti's lifedarkened by rumors of suicide, adultery, and addictionhas often overshadowed his striking accomplishments as a painter.
This evocative volume vividly illuminates Rossetti's career, from his early achievements as a founder of the tremendously influential Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, through his involvement with William Morris's revolutionary design firm, to the grandly unorthodox images of his final years. Rossetti's prodigious art encompassed the meticulously detailed canvases of his early years, the jewellike brilliance of his medieval tableaux, and the sensuously alluring women of his late paintings.
The astute text provides, at long last, a clear and candid account of the artist that carefully untangles fact from myth. Reminiscences from the artist's great-grandniece Helen Guglielmini provide an engaging glimpse of life with the Rossettis. Beautifully designed with luscious reproductions, telling details, and graceful ornamentation, this is the first lavishly illustrated monograph devoted to Rossetti.

Book Description
Growing up in California, Yoshi knew her family looked different from their neighbors. Still, she felt like an American. But everything changed when America went to war against Japan. Along with all the other Japanese-Americans on the West Coast, Yoshi's family were rounded up and imprisoned in a crowded. badly built camp in the desert because they"looked like the enemy." Yoshiko Uchida grew up to be an award-winning author. This memoir of her childhood gives a personal account of a shameful episode in American history.
Customer Reviews:
The Invisible Thread, Jana C........2007-01-08
The memoir, The Invisible Thread, tells the story of a young Japanese girl during the 1930's. Yoshiko Uchida goes through so many unjust events in her younger ages due to the fact that she is Japanese even though she is a Nisei, the second generation of Japanese immigrants. Through Yoshiko's eyes her life, with her older sister and parents, was full of hardships and pain. "Do you cut Japanese hair?" was one of the embarrassing questions Yoshiko had to ask. This capturing novel is an excellent example of a Japanese girl's life during and after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
I grew to love the description of a happy Japanese family living in Berkley, CA. That family was Yoshiko Uchida, her daring older sister, Keiko Uchida, and their two loving Issei ( first generation) parents. The Japanese racism doesn't really stand out in the beginning but it later jumps right in and turns Yoshiko's life upside down. When Japan bombed Pearl Harbor many Japanese were suspected and questioned, then taken away for labor. The Uchida family was one of the unlucky families where the father was taken away to work in Montana and the rest of the family were evacuated to a Tanforan where they lived for five long months. After reading these few chapters of horror and despair I compared it to the blissful and loving beginning and realized how this change that had nothing to do with them directly almost destroyed them.
In the story Yoshiko Uchida does a fair job of describing the characters, that are not only herself, in a realistic way. Keiko, a curious and inquisitive young being is always wondering and fully spirited throughout the book in rain or shine. She has a strong will but also a level head most of the time. Mama's characteristics were rarely mentioned in the story but it is perceived that she is a cheerful housewife and, along with Papa, likes to keep in touch with everyone they know be it a good friend or just a person on the bus. Papa is a social and popular man and organizes a local church, with Mama's help, for many families. Yoshiko is mentioned many times as a fun yet shy child. She can be quite strong at times when personal things are in danger to her but most of the time she is quiet and watching beneath Keiko's shadow. This memoir doesn't read as a regular story but more as a historical novel in which the characters are open to the imagination in their description but in setting in history their characteristics are limited and more precise.
This story is wonderfully written in a true voice from the actual time period. The problems most Japanese families faced were mentioned and how the particular Uchida family dealt with them. Jam packed with the narrative were many interesting facts that helped understand the story more fully. Ms. Uchida really captured the feeling of her younger life during the 1930's: angst, pain, sorrow, happiness, all of it. I recommend this book to readers of all ages because there is absolutely no reason to not read this amazing book that's filled with such detail and description.
Always Bound to Her Japanese Ansestry (Jody F.).......2006-12-13
Although she wanted to be just American, "a long invisible thread... always bound," Yoshiko Uchida to her Japanese ancestry. In the Invisible Thread: a Memoir by Yoshiko Uchida, Uchida, a second-generation Japanese-American, lives a normal American childhood life living with her family, attending school, dreaming to be a teacher and encountering little racial prejudice in Berkley, California. However, everything changes when the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor in 1941. Accordingly, President Roosevelt ignores the Japanese-American's constitutional rights by forcing, "eviction of all Americans of Japanese ancestry along the West Coast," only because they looked like the enemy. I loved The Invisible Thread, because Yoshiko Uchida vividly shares how she and her family struggles and deals with life imprisoned in crowded and isolated Japanese concentration camps and teaches great lessons to her readers.
Throughout the entire book, Yoshiko Uchida provides adjectives, comparisons, similes and metaphors to give detailed descriptions of the surroundings. When she and her family are in the bus that relocates them from California to Topaz, Utah, the concentration camp, in the book she said, "the bus made a sudden turn into the heart of the sun-drenched dessert, and there, in the middle of nowhere, were rows and rows or tar-papered barracks. They looked like small match boxes laid out neatly on a vast white table." She continuously describes Topaz, Utah so well that the pictures at the back of the book look almost exactly like what I had envisioned.
I also love the book because it teaches me many valuable lessons. Yoshiko Uchida is inspiring to me because even though she endures racial discrimination during and after the war, because of her Japanese face, she still has the strength and pride to pursue her dream to become a teacher. Additionally, reading this book has made me appreciate and enjoy my freedom more. Always taking my freedom in America for granted, I never realized that it could be snatched from me any day.
In this moving memoir, Yoshiko Uchida recounts the events preceding, during and following the attack of Pearl Harbor in her life. It also focuses on how she and her family overcame the hardships in this ordeal. I encourage people to read, The Invisible Thread, because it will show you how life for Japanese-Americans dramatically changed during WWII. I would highly recommend this inspiring book for its vivid descriptions, details and strong messages it sends out to all ages.
Life of a Japanese American during Relocation.......2006-03-12
I found this book intriguing. Uchida vividly explains her childhood as a Japanese American and illustrates the need to conform, like any other young child. As she ages, she realizes that her heritage can never be erased, and she is soon penalized for this, a thing she cannot help.
I enjoyed how Uchida used words to show how innocent she was when she was a child. The beginning of this book shows how, even if Yoshiko wanted to be like other girls, there were still places that she could not go because of her face. She is just like any other girl, living a good life in a good, accepting city.
I disliked that, towards the middle of the book, about when Uchida and her family are sent to the camps, the author's use of words describing her feelings stops. Instead, she tells more about her surroundings, and less of how she feels about how America has betrayed her and her family.
The Invisible Thread gives an inside look into the lives of the Japanese Americans forced to make their way in sub-standard living conditions. The vivid language used to describe her family's guests, habits, and unforgettable moments make the book worth the read. I would recommend it to anyone interested in World War II, Japanese American relocation after Pearl Harbor.
Not so invisible any more, thank goodness.......2005-06-26
In addition to her writings about the Japanese and Japanese-American culture, Yoshiko Uchida wrote several fiction books that drew from her experiences as a Japanese American during World War II. The Invisible Thread, written for young adults, is an autobiography that tells of her life before, during her family's internment in a camp in Utah.
Although her parents were Japanese citizens, Yoshi and her sister were born in the United States. They were as American in their speech and culture as the Swedish family next door to them. Yet, because of their appearance, they faced discrimination even before the war. The American government violated the Japanese Americans' constitutional rights when they removed them from their homes. The conditions under which they were forced to live were deplorable.
The author chose not to dwell on the horrors of that period of her life. Although she clearly describes their relocation and the stable and barracks they lived in, her emphasis is more on family life and the positive things they did to keep their lives as normal as possible. She does a fine job of describing her own confusion, her loyalty to her family and friends and her loyalty to the government that betrayed them.
This book is on our local school system's 2005 Summer Reading List. With the current backlash against Arab Americans, this is an important book for children to read. It is only through education and tolerance that we have a hope of avoiding past mistakes.
Amazingly Addicting!.......2005-05-16
I'm only 12, so if you do not wish to read my review, I understand. However, I still wish to express my feelings of this book. I, normally, am not the type of person who reads autobiograpies or biographies, so I wasn't very excited when I discovered we would be starting a unit on them in school. However, the further I read in this book, the less "dull" it seemed. Though I didn't find the beginning very interesting, I quite enjoyed he book as I read on. I soon felt what I think the author did at that time. I was ashamed to discover what the United States Government did to the poor Japanese-Americans. I found that this book was hard to put down, even at 1:00 A.M.

WEll, our class HAD to read this book and the author (Yoshiko Uchida) did explain everything well, but in the end it just didn't have a good plot or summary. This is why I gave it 2 stars. It was an OK book, but I wouldn't waste your time with it.

The Invisible Thread Weaves a Fascinating Quilt of Stories!.......2000-08-13
I bought this book for my daughter before she left for college. I wanted to give her a book that would represent Jewish women and show how she was connected, in her own way, to her heritage. I was fascinated by the women's stories, and could relate to many of them myself. I found that when women share their ideas, we learn a lot about the religion. I passed the book on to a Catholic friend of mine who also loved it. Highly recommended, great for gifts!
Very interesting survey of ordinary American Jewish women........1998-09-06
The Invisible Thread shows how diverse the Jewish community of women is and why such diversity is, in itself, a blessing. There is a non-judgmental but binding feeling of Judaism that permeates the short but interesting descriptions of the lives of very different Jewish women across the United States. I think every Jewish woman can relate to some of the women interviewed and also be surprised and/or shocked at others. The photography accompanying the biographical sketches is also noteworthy and personalizesf the biographies. This is easy and interesting reading for any woman interested in the current state of Judaism around the country. The book is not only for women; my husband found it interesting as well!
