I read the book and I thought: "Wow, how did he manage to find his way within this insanity?" I was tryly impressed by the stubborness and courage and at the same time note of humour the author brought into the story. I loved it and I think it's a must read teaching how a character can survive and become stronger in such a hard time.
I can't wait for Spike Nasmyth's next books!

A Much Needed Perspective on the POW Experience.......2002-12-11
I read this book and was really impressed with the Authors take on his experience as a POW. It is a one of a kind. As a Vietnam Vet of two tours and an Author of my own experiences there this one hit home. Its honest, different, and refreshing. Not to take anything away from anyone who was a prisoner but this guy had an approach and as they say today a paradigm that we would all do well to learn from. Im surprised the book is not more widely distributed but then its not politically correct or down trodden. Its unique as Im sure the Author was and is today. Great book!

i met spike on the north end of vancouver island,...what a guy, what a book,...if you want to read an interesting story of survival from a guys guy ex jet fighter jock there isn't many better than this.
i have read many vietnam POW books, this one of few that does not wallow in the darkness that was the North Vietnam POW's life,...you will laugh, you will cry,...you might have a hard time putting it down.
i could and should write the book on this guy's life since he wrote this one,...this guy is a real character that lives it on the "outside of the performance envelope",...with panache'. for me and because i know the man non fiction does'nt get much better than this.
Excellent Book.......2001-03-03
I just wanted to add another viewpoint than the previous reviewer. The language is appropriate for the context of the book. This is explained in the beginning by the Author. His point of view is first person. It is an interesting account of this man's experiences. I found it to be an excellent book. As an afterthought. If you liked the movie Good Will Hunting and the language did not bother you. Then this book is right for you. If you did not like Good Will Hunting because of the language then move on. This is real life in Vietnam and the language is appropriate.

The renowned physicist Emilio Segrè (1905-1989) left his memoirs to be published posthumously because, he said, "I tell the truth the way it was and not the way many of my colleagues wish it had been." This compelling autobiography offers a personal account of his fascinating life as well as candid portraits of some of this century's most important scientists, such as Enrico Fermi, E. O. Lawrence, and Robert Oppenheimer.
Born in Italy to a well-to-do Jewish family, Segrè showed early signs of scientific genius--at age seven he began a notebook of physics experiments. He became Fermi's first graduate student in 1928 and contributed to the discovery of slow neutrons, and later was appointed director of the physics laboratory at the University of Palermo. While visiting the Radiation Laboratory at Berkeley in 1938, he learned that he had been dismissed from his Palermo post by Mussolini's Fascist regime. Lawrence then hired him to work on the cyclotron at Berkeley with Luis Alvarez, Edwin McMillan, and Glenn Seaborg.
Segrè was one of the first to join Oppenheimer at Los Alamos, where he became a group leader on the Manhattan Project. His account of that mysterious enclave of scientists, all working feverishly to develop the atomic bomb before the Nazis did, includes his description of the first explosion at Alamogordo.
Segrè writes movingly of the personal devastation wrought by the Nazis, his struggles with fellow scientists, and his love of nature. His book offers an intimate glimpse into a bygone era as well as a unique perspective on some of the most important scientific developments of this century.

It is clear from his autobiography that Emilo Segre was a complex and often difficult individual to work with or to satisfy. He was also highly intelligent and educated in the European fashion of his time. I found his book extremely interesting and well written. He skillfully integrates scientific and political activities with a highly critical appraisal of the personal characteristics of many of the the important pyhsicists of the mid 20th century. It is not difficult to understand why he was called Basilisk. Perhaps, in light of the current sate of outcome of our national election the following quote from the book is merited: "I believe that the pettiness, the jelousy, and the inclination to litigation prevailing in a democracy such as the United States are in the long run sources of weakness. I recommend this book highly.

I got this book as part of my MSN program. I still refer to it frequently because it is a fantastic reference. It's easy to navigate, and it's easy to read. The advice in the book always seems so timely as well.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in teaching other nurses or in other similiar settings. I would also highly recommend it for the new Clinical Nurse Educator or Staff Development Specialist for its comprehensive discussion of the topics. It can certainly provide the basic knowledge one needs to know in order to do this job.

Anywhere from good to great.......2006-01-18
This book has several award winning recipes in it and we have made most of them. My daughter and I started making a new one every Sunday evening to break the boredom we sometimes experience during winter. I should mention the book was recommend to me by a co-worker.
I absolutely love chocolate chip cookies and this is a recommended book. But not all 47 recipes are great. Some of them ask for ingredients that even the best-stocked home kitchen will not have.
I was surprised to find some unusual recipes like the cherry chocolate recipe that I think is wonderful. It basically calls for cherry yogurt and a devil's food cake (among a few other ingredients).
This recipe book will take you out of the chocolate chip cookie "box" and introduce you to a whole new world.
But to be fair...I will mention that these days it seems you can find about any recipe on the internet. But having these under one cover is nice and I highly recommend this book.
4 stars since not all of the recipes are reasonable or even worthy of your time, but 90% are so go for it!

If you like chocolate chip cookies, then you'll like this book. You wouldn't think that there could be this many variations on a basic receipe, but there certainly are. I'd recommend this book.

Great for behavioral studies!.......2006-04-19
I was searching for a book which would follow the same principles as Monty Roberts (author of "The Man Who Listens to Horses") and Cesar Millan (whose television show is the "Dog Whisperer"). I didn't expect to find another book on horse training so quickly which matches their psychological techniques as precisely as this book does!
It appears that the reviews on this book are determined by what the reader is expecting from it. I personally will rate a book as being great when it instructs in a logical manner, contains good sense, and works when put to the test. Rare is the book that can tell you everything there is to know. This book seems to cover the basics to help one to understand the mindset of horses and that is very important, especially for younger horses since they're in their highly influential years.
One word of caution: If someone appears to be copying another's ideas, don't forget how possible it is for more than one person to be capable of coming to the same conclusions on their own.

Young horses can be scary when you have only dealt with trained horses - even green ones and problem horses are easier to work with because you already have a common point of reference.
Young untrained horses don't react the way you always think they should and they have different development stages just as young humans do - their behavior will change in each stage and you need to expect this. This book prepares you with telling you what is "normal" at what ages and how to deal with these everyday behavioral changes and problems that will crop up when raising your own horse. Books covering 6months - 3 years are hard to find and this was the best I found at covering the usual challenges you would face and showing you how to be a firm, kind and confident leader. This book is short and easy to read in one day, easy to use as a reference but I don't think its meant to be a one complete source - just a good starting point to get you on your way. Yes you can find bits of this information from other trainers, yes this book is not big or complete - but it is a good introduction and I still go back to it again and again.
Young horses are a blank slate and as close as you will come to the wild horse mind without adopting a Mustang. Once you have reared a baby or two, you will never relate to any horse in the same way again - and it's a good thing.
Combine with "Imprint Training", "Bringing up Baby" and "Right from the Start" for a complete reference collection on raising foals to young horses to be good and happy citizens.
For those without a round pen, read!.......2005-03-14
While no longer a fan of Monty Roberts, I found this book very interesting. It is written for people who don't have access to a round pen. Richard did an experiment & made sure he was the only one that ever handled his 2 foals. He started them on a lunge line, and I think it was quite a few months later before he backed them & found that they were carrying themselves on a loose rein from the beginning of riding, which really impressed me. Lots of great photos. Sorry if this sounds infantile but it's late & I read this quite a while ago & couldn't believe there wasn't a review. I am definitely going to read this book again.
Excellent , a real "how to".......2003-10-02
At first i was slightly put off by the review that was entitled "not worth a penny" as it was the most recent, however i carried on and read all other reviews and how glad i am. It was fantastic, a real bible, my horse and i have benefited hugely from the information given. I can only think that "Not worth a penny" was having a bad day.

This book is terrible. Not only does the author try and steal ideas from other authors, he doesn't even do a good job of it. There are sections in the book where paragraphs end in the middle of a sentence and never seem to finish anywhere. I do not recommend this book.

Bought this for my 15 year old daughter.......2007-01-04
I bought this book for my daughter. She lost her older hunter horse and decided she didnt want another made horse. She could never replace him so she wanted a foal and to raise it herself. Well Bella is only 7 months old and a handful but by using this and one other book she has already taught her to lead. Just a few minutes for a couple of days and using these techniques she has had small successes. this is one of the better books that I could find for it was easy to understand the directions and pictures. It is one of the better books to purchase if you plan on raising a baby too. John Lyons is other book that is a great one for guidance.

A "must" for all herbal remedies reference collections........2001-01-05
Tyler's Herbs of Choice provides an important treatise on the therapeutic use of phytomedicinals (herbal remedies) and provide important information on the most effective herbs, what they do, how they work. This is not for the casual reader: technical medical descriptions of common conditions and treatments cover details doctors will need to know and provide explanations of how the herbs interact with the body, and what constitutes acceptable levels of dosage.
An old school viewpoint?.......2000-12-28
Written by two pharmacognosists at Perdue University, this book is an update to the original volume in 1994, describing the safe use of the most widely available medicinal herbs. They address recent developments in the use of herbal medicines in a manner that is easy to read and without unnecessary jargon. They include some updated references for most plants, encompassing the clinical literature, known chemical constituents, and the history of their use. Introductory essays describe the basic principles of herbal medicine and problems that the regulatory authorities have had in attempting to deal with these products, especially since the passage of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). The chapters are arranged by general therapeutic indication and discuss the herbs used to treat various ailments and their reported efficacy based on clinical or preclinical results.
One obvious distinction of the book is the clear message that classical pharmacognosy is the only valid scientific viewpoint. There is still in this updated edition, the strong notion that there is a magic bullet within each plant that we only need identify and standardize. But this is seldom as straightforward as it may appear. For example, in the basic principles section there is praise of standardized preparations of hypericum, yet no acknowledgment that standardization based on hypericin is probably not useful, since it is no longer believed to be essential for the antidepressant activity of St. John's Wort. Standardization and pharmacology of the currently favored constituent, hyperforin, was not mentioned. Publication in a scientific journal does not make a particular finding (e.g. hypericin inhibition of MAO) a "fact." Subsequent studies showed no MAO inhibition with pure hypericin. Conclusions and extrapolations drawn from results of in vitro studies are based on the conventional wisdom, which is often incorrect. While proposing a mechanism of action is a worthy goal, it must be remembered that true drug mechanisms (even the synthetic ones) are still beyond our medical understanding in most cases, particularly for psychotherapeutic medications. For example, while SSRI's are known to act by blocking reuptake of serotonin, the connection between serotonin uptake and antidepressant action still remote.
Also mentioned as "pseudoscience" is the notion that whole herbs are more effective than their isolated active constituents. The basic principles section states that for every example in support of this statement that there is at least one denying it. While a 50:50 ratio hardly seems in itself a reasonable criterion for pseudoscience, I think one would be hard pressed to give one example of constituents being more effective than the whole herb for every example of the inverse. While I completely agree that hyperbole and sometimes outright fabrication are seen in the marketing of herbals, we shouldn't be too quick to categorically discount what herbal practitioners have been saying for so long, but rather to weight them with the same standards as ideas that the "scientists" have generated.

I have been waiting for an update of this classic book. However, for most health care professionals or herb users, I don't feel the $40 price tag makes this book worth it. Wait for the paperback of this updated version or get the paperback 1994 version.

Excellent book for herbalists - presents SCIENTIFIC evidence.......1998-11-04
Dr. Tyler is a reputable scientist who has once again discussed and presented scientific data on herbs. Unlike many "herbalists", Dr. Tyler is not biased. Though rather technical, this book is the PERFECT reference for herbalists. In a time of extreme herbalist "quackery" it is refreshing to have such a wonderful reference which is based on scientific evidence. Bravo!

This book looks down on Commision E in Germany as though it were a third world county, disregards all their careful research and conclusions. Also states that since we do not have standardize herbs in the U.S he couldn't recommend an effictive amount to be used. Don't throw away your money on this book.
Somewhat technical herb book.......1998-04-01
This book makes a good reference book for herbalists and people interested in botanicals. Divided into herb sections, the author bases the information on scientific research rather than folk lore which sometimes verifies the the long standing beliefs about particular herbs.

I Got This Book As A Gift...........2001-08-08
...and for the most part, although it's geared towards a younger audience, it's a great book to have if you are a big fan of Kristi Yamaguchi, mostly for the photos it includes. There are several photos of Kristi in Albertville, both on the podium and standing with her medal after the ceremony that I've not seen in any other book and that brought back great memories of watching it live all those years ago. One of the more interesting parts of this book is that it was written before Kristi decided to turn pro, and talks about her plans for Lillehammer in 1994 (how great would that have been if it had been true?). Some of the photos are incorrectly captioned, and the book doesn't really reveal any ground-breaking information about Kristi or her life that hasn't already been covered in other books, but I recommend it for the photos. If you are a BIG Kristi fan, regardless of your age, this book will fit nicely into your collection. Otherwise, for a better book on Kristi and skating in general, check out her "Figure Skating for Dummies".
