Made up of men from Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota, the 34th Infantry "Red Bull" Division was the first American division to sail for European Service in World War II. This is the account of one of these men, Ralph B. Schaps, a common soldier who saw over 500 days of front line combat - from North Africa to marching up the boot of Italy in pursuit of Rommel and Kesselring and the withdrawing German forces. After the 34th Division was inducted into federal service in February 1941, until May 1945, when ironically the German 34th Division surrendered to the American 34th Division near Milan, the reality of the hardships, fears and heroism of the front line soldier come to life in this personal history as told by one who was there.

this book is very poor. do not purchase. I am an intern pharmacist and it is in no way applicable to the practice of pharmacy. Having used this book, I have no better understanding of pharmacy law. I recommend the Weisman text for CA law, as it is a better book.

Pharmacy Practice and Law.......2001-03-04

This is a fairly easy to read text that is helpful in preparing for the pharmacy boards. It provides essential coverage of pertinent information needed in the everyday practice of pharmacy.

As a pharmacy intern I found this text not only excellent for board review but also as a continuing source for reference as a pharmacist. It is divided into varioius chapters with relavent and useful case studies. It also raises day-to-day ethical questions in the practice of pharamcy that you may encounter.

These books provide a nice history of the cooking techniques but the recipes are hard to reproduce because the ingredients are hard to find. If you read cookbooks like they are novels then this is for you.

So much to learn.......2002-09-10

While I completely agree with all of the other reviewers (in that this is an excellent book), I do want to take the time to point out that this is not just a cookbook. Within each chapter (each dedicated to a certain country), there is history, education and just so much to learn. For example, the book tells you about the cheeses, wines, beers and other specialties of each country and special holiday meals and snacks. The traditions of the peoples are spelled out and almost makes you feel like you are there experiencing them. And, of course, great recipes of each country as well. This may be the BEST book I've ever owned. I highly recommend it. Unlike most cookbooks, you can just read this one and have a ball.

NOT 'just another cookery book'........2002-04-20

I dithered for months whether to spend such a lot of money on 'just another cookery book', but I'm glad I did - it is definitely NOT 'just another cookery book' ... I've just spent most of my day off totally absorbed in these 2 books.
There is plenty of interesting information, with superb photography and illustrations; well-researched commentaries on the various industries; snippets of little-known historical info (did you know that Britain's King Edward VII gave the name Crepe Suzette to a spoiled dessert?) and well-chosen recipes which highlight the particular country's culinary strong points.

These are 2 weighty tomes (6lb/3kg each!), but only in the physical sense - they are very readable. With a chapter devoted to each of the European countries, the authors give an introduction, an overview of the country's specialities and an in-depth look at each speciality:- how it is grown/made; different varieties; anecdotes from the area; useful snippets of information, as well as some wonderful recipes (not all of them well-known).

Obviously some countries get more coverage than others; France Spain & Italy each get far more attention than, say, Russia - but deservedly so, given their gastronomic heritage (although the wines of France are over-played, to my mind).

While I would not recommend this as a working cookery book, it is certainly a valuable addition to anyone's culinary library - an ideal present for that friend of yours who has a love of food and cooking; anyone would be over the moon to receive such a present!

Excellent.......2001-10-28

I thought that this was a really wonderful book. All books of this type have to show the really traditional dishes but often that is all they do. This book showed a lot of dishes that are still popular in the different countries and it showed part of the modern influences. It is an informative book and really interesting to read even if you never intend to actually cook something from it.

An amazing guide to European speciality cooking.......2001-03-21

This two volume series is a fantastic collection of European speciality recipes. If you are looking for a "how to" cooking course or information on techniques, this book is not for you. However, if you would like to explore the culinary specialities of the countries of Europe, I have not found a better book.

Visually, the book is very impressive. The surrounding pictures and text describe the country and some of the culture, putting the recipies in context. It is this extra material that makes trying out these recipies so much fun. The Europa series does not have the same breadth as the individual country books in the remainder of the Culinaria series, however, it does hit the highlights of each country.

The recipies themselves vary in the level of difficulty, preparation and practicality. Again, pick your experiment and get started as you have time. My biggest frustration is that some of the ingredients are hard to find if you are outside of Europe - obviously not the book's fault.

I found this two volume set to be the best buy in the Culinaria series. This book was well worth the investment and is an interesting read.

i cannot tell you how impressed i am with joyce mori's work. i have two of her other books, which are also inspiring.

this wonderful new book of designs taken from around the world and throughout history will inspire quilting and applique, and beadwork, and embroidery, and maybe even stencilling.

the designs come from borneo to norway, from the bronze age to the 1890s, from pottery, cloth, carved wood, metal work. many are shown in more than one arrangement, some have been developed into continuous line designs good for machine quilting. all the designs are broken outlines, to suggest hand quilting. this particular volume does not have finished examples of quilting or applique.

this is a fantastic resource for any designer on any level, not just quilters.

This book has really made me aware of the constant learning that my one year old is doing! Gives great specific ideas on how to help your child play(learn), and explains how every little thing your toddler is doing, while seeming like nothing to you, is actually a skill. My daughter and I are getting along so much better since I have read this book because it allowed me to see things through her eyes!!!

December 10, they return for a massive daylight raid on the strategic naval base at Cavite. December 12, Japanese troops land at Legaspi. Manila falls January 2, 1942. The early chapters of this bittersweet tale are laced with notations from the war diary of teenager Jeanette West as she and her parents face thirty-seven months of constant fear and slow starvation in Santo Tomas prison camp in the heart of the captured city. Part II tracks the impact of that experience on Jeanette's adulthood after she returns home to the United States in 1945. Part III builds a causal relationship between those three lost years of her youth and the fourteen-year siege of breast cancer that takes her life in 1993. This book provides an unusual look at the subtle, sometimes subliminal impact of untreated, prolonged traumatic stress over half a century. Most accounts of this disorder cover a far shorter time frame. A meticulous journal keeper, many of the telling quotations cited in Parts II and III are from handwritten journals that surfaced after her death.

A highly convincing look at cancer and traumatic stress........1998-08-01

This book is a highly personal and terribly moving look at therelationship between profound stress and cancer/cancer treatment. Theauthor tells the story of his wife, Jeanette Rowan, who was a prisoner of war for three years in Manila during World War II. In late mid-life Jeanette developed breast cancer that ultimately proved fatal. While never stooping to vilify the physicians who cared for her, the author does a wonderful job of using Jeanette's experience to set forth some interesting questions about what the optimal approach to cancer treatment might be for someone who had been so systematically, traumatically, and completely stripped of control during her formative years. William Rowan writes beautifully as Jeanette's husband and helpmate, and his writing is wonderfully informed by his own professional understanding of microbiology. *On the Spring Tide* would be very valuable for cancer patients, for their friends and families, for oncologists, and for therapists. Highly recommended!
