Book Description
Much is known of the horrendous crimes committed by Adolph Hitler during World War II. But very little is written about the early signs of his destructive nature shown during his rise to power, until now. "A Battlefield Encounter" tells the true story of Jordan Fisk, a young American studying music at the University of Munich in Germany at the time when Hitler began attracting attention. In the book, Kidd follows Jordan on his return home after controversial studies in Germany and then remains with him as he fights the very people he had once called friends. Fisk's experiences include visits to numerous death camps - as a result of his ability to speak many European languages; he helped victims of the war find their way home. Kidd masterfully weaves a tale of WWII battles, while never losing the human element.

A History of Women in Science from Antiquity through the Nineteenth Century
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2005-03-23
The author has put together a comprehensive review of women, more or less lost from history, who participated in the sciences. The book is loosely structured around time periods, covering antiquity through the 18th century. The book contains many references and she clearly states her sources. Some of the more questionable (rabbinical tradition) were probably better left out. In any case, since she states the source, the reader can decide for herself.
A Woman Scientist's Point of View.......2001-08-18
If you are a woman with any interest at all in the sciences (mathematics and philosophy included), then please read this book. I expected a strongly feministic "the man is holding me down" revision of history. I found a well-balanced and well-documented account of the content and context of the science and scientific lives of women who history has forgotten. I am a 36 year old female scientist, who for the first time has found a source of inspirational female role models in this book. Look, things weren't so good in the past for women. But let's not remain in denial and let's not rewrite the past. Let's read even-handed historical accounts, such as the one presented in this book, and then let's make healthy, well-balanced decisions about how society should best move forward.
A pretty crummy book ...........2000-12-07
I rated this book at one star only because amazon.com doesn't allow a reviewer the option of zero stars. The author of this book is a biochemist -- not a trained historian -- and her amateurism certainly shows, particulary in the early chapters where a competent historian would be careful in the assessment of the historicity of sources. So Alic retails a tradition -- presented as though it has a factual basis -- about Moses and his wife operating a medical school in Egypt. Never mind that there is virtually no evidence independent of the Bible that Moses even existed. Perhaps needless to say that the Bible contains no mention of said medical school. Shortly thereafter readers are told that Cleopatra studied human anatomy and physiology by dissecting condemned prisoners alive. The source for this horror story turns out to be a rabbinical tradition -- scarcely an unbiased source when dealing with Greeks or Greek culture. The rest of the book is at best naive hagiography.
Timely review of the forgotten........1999-11-06
As with much else of western culture and history, the role and importance of exceptional women in science throughout the ages has been, sadly, under-appreciated. This book seeks to address this point. Their achievements have been even more remarkable when one considers the male-dominated societies in which many of them lived. Hypatia herself was a magnificent scientist, as were many others, sadly under-represented in many historical analyses. Hopefully in the future, with our growing awareness of our societys' inherited irrational and unfair bias towards women, anyones place in the history and future of science will become what it should always have been, as scientists, irrespective of gender.

A leading MIT social scientist and consultant examines five professions--engineering, architecture, management, psychotherapy, and town planning--to show how professionals really go about solving problems.
Customer Reviews:
Reflective Practitioner: Stepwise Discovery of Solutions.......2007-05-09
Dr. Schon addresses how professionals can better join in a process of learning and decision-making. By seeing life as a process involving both the service provider and the client/customer, the interaction itself provides additional tools and information. Coming out of an industrial engineering perspective, processes of decision-making can be structured to require step-by-step participation in problem definition and solution clarification. Best quote: "A skillful teacher draws out critical facts, and by a sequence of astutely chosen questions leads students through a process of inquiry which serves both to structure the "solution space" of the situation at hand and to demonstrate a mode of thinking about business problems."
not great, not bad.......2007-03-03
i wasn't too thrilled with this book... mainly because .... i didn't find it eye opening.... i felt that it took simple concepts and made it into high concepts and it became repetitive... if this is what ppl have to read to discover that ppl scale situations differently using a combination of their experience and knowledge... ~ save your money, eating a hamburger would be better off....
chpt 5 talks about the structure of reflection in action...
- evaluatin experiments in problem setting
- bringing past experience to bear on a unique situation
- rigor in on the spot experiment
- virtual worlds
-stance in inquiry
ie. schon's virtual world is to simulate reality... the practitioner constructs and manipulates virtual worlds in order to experiment rigorously (#3 see above)... pg 157... ie. architecture & sketchpad, engineer and models/computer simulation, etc.... we should know this... that's all i mean...
A foundational classic.......2005-06-13
This is a critical book that provides a foundation for most of the other work on organizational learning (such as Senge) and complexity in organizations (Wheatley). As most classics are, this is not the most up-to-date book on reflection and action, and if you are looking for something that will give you a fast pay-off, I suggest looking elsewhere. If, however, you are interested in reading one of the foundational pieces of writing on these issues, this is one of the classics, and an important book.
This is an educational theory book.......2000-08-29
This book discusses the history and theory of professional learning. Schon spends a great deal of time justifying what every professional knows - that framing problems is difficult and that book learning is insufficient to deal with these problems.
If you are interested in positivism, technical rationality, and the evolution of the modern professional school, then this book is loaded with meaty material. If, however, you want to apply methods built upon other epistemologies, go straight to his 2nd book, "Educating the Reflective Practitioner".
The book is well thought out, but I found it a heavy read. Not for the faint-of-heart.
I got a lot out of it. Recommended only for epistemology or history of professional school wonks.
Tough reading - but definitly worht it !.......2000-06-11
A word of warning. This book is hard to read. Some things are reapeated over and over, while other detailes are never given proper treatment.
But - if you don't mind spending some time reading and analyzing the book, there are heaps of golden nuggets to find.
Schön illustrates why rational design processes doesn't work in reality (for computer enthusiasts this means an explanation of why the waterfall model will never work on real life problems). Instead he tries to explain how designer (architects, musicians, engineers etc.) really work, when they solve real problems. And how to teach expert knowledge to others.
I highly recommend this book for non-whimps...;-)

Book Description
¡Sabroso! is a compilation of over 200 recipes, menus, and the stories of four lively, Spanish-speaking women who formed new homes and a close friendship far from their native homes of Spain, Peru, Argentina, and Colombia. Food has always been central to the friendship between the four women. From the first get-together, to every picnic, barbecue, birthday, party, holiday, and milestone shared through the years every woman brought a special dish made from a recipe from her native country adjusted with American ingredients. When they first moved to America they each realized how different the food was from their home counties. So they soon began to adjust, swap, debate and refine their recipes. This book is a collection of these recipes and the stories of their friendship and traditions lovingly compiled by the daughter of one of the women.
Customer Reviews:
Food and Friendship.......2003-05-05
Thumbing through the book you can practically smell the food cooking and you can absolutely feel the friendship these four women have forged over the years. That a daughter collected their creativity for all to share is a dash of spice. I and a friend prepared the first dish I tried for a dinner party with several friends. I'll be dipping into this book many times!
Sabroso es Fabuloso!.......2003-04-17
This book is a wonderful resource for an endless variety of tasty dishes! The recipes are easy to follow and prepare, and the stories are equally heartwarming. A great book for anyone who cooks because they love to. Salud!
Delicioso!!!.......2003-04-15
Ms. Taylor hit the nail on the head with this one. This is a fantastic compilation of delicious mouth watering recipes, I can't believe Ms. Taylor put them in writing. I would have thought these recipes are "secrets". I'm no pro but I was able to make delicious food quite easily. My kitchen is smelling so good at this point, I look forward to coming home from work and enjoying it. A great cookbook!!
Liven up your kitchen with this selection!!!.......2003-04-15
This cookbook is excellent. It features recipes of the Spanish -American culture, while also providing informative and entertaining information about the recipes. This cookbook not only focuses on delicious recipes, it also expounds on the history of four remarkable Spanish-American women who have remained friends throughout decades. These four women provide accounts of their friendship, as well as recipes for the many meals they have shared together. The recipes range from simple to semi-difficult. None are impossible, or take a ridiculous amount of time. The selection of recipes is excellent, and each chapter has its own table of contents, making that perfect recipe easy to find! I would recommend this book to anyone looking to liven up their recipe collection with some unique and delicious meals with some cultural history! This book is also very helpful if planning a dinner party. There are endless combinations of appetizers, salads, side dishes, vegetables, entrees, and desserts for all appetites.
Very Tasty!.......2003-04-15
This book was a very well written book. The colors used and the layout of the book are excellent. I really like how for each food, it describes where the recipe comes from (Spain, Columbia, Argentina, Peru). It is also nice to see how each contirbutor to the book shares something personal about herself. I know from having had these foods how tasty they are. Ms. Taylor did an excellent job putting this book together. I reccomend this book to everyone who enjoys cooking and to those who enjoy a little variation in their diet. Great job!

Megan, a black and white collie possessed of irresistible curiosity, an exuberance for life and sparkling brown eyes that invited companionship, was born in Oregon's Year of the Storms.
She was soon adopted by two teachers and grew up on their Oregon sheep farm. Megan's adventures on Mojac farm are a delightful, entertaining and instructive true story of the dog's life as interpreted by her masters, who she taught lessons in discovery, exasperation and love.
Mojac's Megan is not only the tale of a remarkable border collie, but also a grand slice of rural America showing the role a favorite dog may play in a family history -- a story about contemporary farmers and educators who learn from Megan about the land they live on and the woolies they raise.

Beading on a Loom (Beadwork How-to)
ASIN: 0961350318 |
Book Description
Indian Bead-Weaving Patterns is written for beginning and advanced beaders. It contains over 200 instructional illustrations and photographs of 47 beadwork pieces. Emphasis is on the use of traditional Native American beading techniques. The major portion of this book covers chain-weaving patterns, examples of which include multiple strands, 6-bead and 8-bead daisy chains, "Ogalala Butterfly," ladder weaves, "Peyote Stitch," fancy tubes, "spider" designs, "Apache Leaf," "Zig-zag" variations, 5- and 8-bead diagonals, "Potawatomi Weave," "Wide Net," "Lakota Chain," beaded braids, and beaded dolls. Also included in this book are notes on supplies, knots and threading and an illustrated section on How to Make and Use an Indian Bead Loom. With this new, enlarged edition, come two additional sections, TRIANGLE BASE has illustrated directions for making this very popular pattern for pendants and ear-drops; and BEAD EMBROIDERY includes detailed instructions for Rosettes and Applique work. Additional descriptions and illustrations are also given for other patterns of sewn beadery. Expanded to 80 pages in 1989, reprinted in 1993, this has been the best introduction to Native American beadworking since 1971.
Customer Reviews:
Indian Bead Weaving Patterns.......2007-09-15
The late Mr. Goodhue had a unique way of learning how many of the patterns he describes were originally executed: he would take a piece apart bead-by-bead to find out how it was constructed. This resulted in very detailed diagrams for many, many intricate bead weaving patterns. The instructions and diagrams are easy to follow, although to get even tension and consistent results, some of the patterns require a good deal of practice.
The Most Complete..........2007-01-08
To me, this is the most complete technical book ever wrote on Indian Beading works. But excuse my poor english, I'm french !
Classical Patterns.......2006-08-26
This book is invaluable. I have seen many wonderful patterns for beading drived from it and the beaders have given the book credit. Many beautiful patterns come from this book and the artists use it as a base for their original designs. I hope it never goes out of print. I always keep two copies, just in case.
Alisa Norton Miller
Beadwork as Meditation, Many Thanks, Mr. Goodhue!.......2006-06-22
I can ditto everything Diane Fitzgerald says -- and I have her books as well. After I became familiar with the weaves in the book, I translated them to fashion colors and created many lovely items which I sold. By adding fringe or texture, by using iridescent or matte finish beads, by "driving on the shoulder" so to speak (i.e., doing an unstructured Oglala Butterfly around a featured handmade large bead), I could make all sorts of new looks. The diagrams are clear. I photocopied several to color with my own color scheme ideas before undertaking a project.
But I have to say this book quite saved my life when my life was falling apart. I had someone I loved in the hospital with a head injury, not even expected to live. I held a stressful job and the rest of my life was not going well at all. I began working Mr. Goodhue's book, working every weave. Culling seed beads through a magnifying lamp, listening to music or to books on tape, I could forget my problems for 45 seconds at a time! With this book, a few colors of size 11 beads, a package of needles and some size B or D thread, you'll have hours of fun and a lot of bracelets! And a whole lot more. I hope Horace is beading in Heaven!
Can't Be Beat.......2005-12-03
I bought this book a number of years ago and it has always been my favorite. After seeing some little beaded Indian men and women on necklaces in a craft store in Cherokee, NC, I wanted to learn to make some. Goodhue's book is the only book I have come across which has instructions for the little dolls (although I don't think he has a picture of them). The only thing that would make the book better is some larger, color pictures of finished products, but at least you can't beat the hand-drawn diagrams for bead placement and thread direction. I had never made a decent looking daisy-chain until I came across it!

Rooted in the belief that good gardening is water-conscious gardening, Water shows how to have your garden and water, too, and covers when and how much to water; soil types; improving drainage; minimizing stress; the importance of mulch; watering systems--from the old-fashioned watering can to sophisticated drip and trickle irrigation; and ends with an encyclopedia that lists over 100 water-conserving plants.

Customer Reviews:
It's OK.......2006-06-22
I'm not sure what to make of some of the reviews. I paid very little for this book so I was willing to take a chance. I figured out of 25,000 names we could find something that would appeal to us. I think it is a useful name book. It is true that they have a variety of names from very different origins i.e African, Japanese, Hebrew, Greek, etc. However, in our case we weren't looking for a book that would give us Amy, Jenny, Bob, Jack and James. We are familiar with those common names already. So for us it will do the job. True, there are some names in here that I can't believe anyone would ever name their kid but I think that I could say that for any name book. If you are looking for a common name then there probably are better books out there. If you want a name that is a little more unique then you will probably be satisfied.
Worthless.......2005-04-25
Maybe one out of every 100 names in this book is a name I've heard of. There must be over 20,000 of the 25,000 names that are Hindu, Arabic, Hebrew, African, Thai, or Czech. The first 10 girls' names listed are Aaliyah, Aanandini, Aba, Ababuo, Abagbe, Abam, Abayomi, Abebi, Abedabun, and Abegaila. Abagbe???!!!
If you're looking for a simple book of names to peruse, this is not the one for you.
...but do you really need EVERYTHING?.......2004-06-05
This book is completely out of control.
Any reader, or thumber-through, or this book, who will (of course) be looking for ideas on what to name an upcoming addition to her family, will be completely snowed under by the absurd profusion of exotic names contained in this book, and will end up wasting approximately 90% of the time spent poring over this waste of paper. The emphasis here is overwhelmingly on sheer quantity of information, rather than quality. I was not surprised to read from some of the other reviews here that the author has played fast-and-loose with meanings and authenticity of certain Japanese names, and this flaccidity-with-the-facts undoubtedly runs throughout the entire course of the book. As well, one might expect such a voluminous catalog of (to say the least) UNUSUAL names, to provide a pronunciation key for those parents-to-be who might actually take some of the suggestions seriously, but this book has no such help. As such, the information that is here, undoubtedly error-ridden to begin with, can be nothing more than an idle curiosity.
Above all, the vast majority of names in here are just so outlandish that NO ONE would begin to consider them. Dead set on a girl's name that begins with the letters "Tz"? No fear: there are OVER A DOZEN of them in here (I swear I am not making this up).
This book is a perfect example of the worst excesses of both reality-immune multiculturalism as well as the make-a-quick-buck-off-new-parents industry. Undoubtedly, Lisa Shaw never had in mind to put together a book that would actually help parents decide on a name for their child. Presumably, such a book exists, but this is decidedly not it.
Don't trust her foreign names!!.......2003-11-02
I can't believe she has actually published this book without doing more research! Almost all the Japanese names listed there are useless - I would feel sorry for your child. If she is so inaccuarte with Japanese names, I wouldn't trust any of other foreign names listed there. The author should be more responsible if she was going to publish something. Do more research, please!
Great Name Book.......2003-05-01
I found this book to be just about everything I was looking for in a name book. It gave a wide variety of names along with their meanings and origins. There were also lists included of things like what celebrities are naming their children, flower and animal names, etc. The book was well structured and easy to navigate which is a plus when going through it with my husband. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a thorough name book.

PASSION! - OF A SORT - TAKES TIME.......2005-08-21
Matthew Quinn has been hounded by the press and media for his story of escape from Abuqara. What happened there?
Is he traumatized or mentally off?
Felicity Taylor is raising her nine year old daughter with her father's help.
Amy tends to be inquisitive, slightly manipulative and a bit on the bold side.
Diane Chesney, an old classmate of Fliss's, is bound and determined to make Matt move back to London. She tries to convince Fliss that she and Matt are engaged. [I got a kick out of what Matt makes her admit to.]
Fliss's father has a problem with her working for Matt after listening to the gossip being spread around about Matt, until he gets to know him. You got to remember that he was jealous of Amy's friendship with the Colonel.
Working for Matt gave Fliss many oportunities for feeling an attraction to the man, especially after seeing him in bed. [grin] She never does get to finish his massage.
Fliss is determined not to get involved with another man after the episode that lead to Amy's conception. Yet there must be some reason why Matt keeps backing off when they seem to get close. What is his secret? What happened when he was in prison?
Thoroughy entertaining but another weak-willed dame, yet if she hadn't .............
story makes a fast read - try it you may like it.
Nothing memorable.......2005-07-06
The premise was interesting and has potential. But the writing was off. I felt the author was trying to write 'down', using vernacular and slang which didn't sit well with the rest of the writing. The heroine's daughter didn't act or talk like a nine-year-old. The heroine's interaction with her daughter came off as stilted and unnatural. The heroine's father couldn't decide whether he liked the hero or not, nor his reasons for that indecision. The femme fatale was wholly unnecessary. I liked that so much of the story was from the hero's pov. And the hero was likeable enough. But, overall, too many problems to give it more stars.
Great romance - lots of emotional turmoil!.......2005-07-03
eHarlequin.com Book Summary - For two long years, news reporter Matthew Quinn was held captive by rebel forces. His dramatic escape made headlines. But Matt has returned scarred, believing that he can never love another woman....
