    Book Description

Readers of Cheaper by the Dozen remember Lillian Moller Gilbreth (1878-1972) as the working mom who endures the antics of not only twelve children but also an engineer husband eager to experiment with the principles of efficiency -- especially on his own household.

What readers today might not know is that Lillian Gilbreth was herself a high-profile engineer, and the only woman to win the coveted Hoover Medal for engineers. She traveled the world, served as an advisor on women's issues to five U.S. presidents, and mingled with the likes of Eleanor Roosevelt and Amelia Earhart. Her husband, Frank Gilbreth, died after twenty years of marriage, leaving her to raise their eleven surviving children, all under the age of nineteen. She continued her career and put each child through college. Retiring at the age of ninety, Lillian Gilbreth was the working mother who "did it all."

Jane Lancaster's spirited and richly detailed biography tells Lillian Gilbreth's life story-one that resonates with issues faced today by many working women. Lancaster confronts the complexities of how one of the twentieth century's foremost career women could be pregnant, nursing, or caring for children for more than three decades.

Yet we see how Gilbreth's engineering work dovetailed with her family life in the professional and domestic partnership that she forged with her husband and in her long solo career. The innovators behind many labor-saving devices and procedures used in factories, offices, and kitchens, the Gilbreths tackled the problem of efficiency through motion study. To this Lillian added a psychological dimension, with empathy toward the worker. The couple's expertise also yielded the "Gilbreth family system," a model that allowed the mother to be professionally active if she chose, while the parents worked together to raise responsible citizens.

Lancaster has woven into her narrative many insights gleaned from interviews with the surviving Gilbreth children and from historical research into such topics as technology, family, work, and feminism. Filled with anecdotes, this definitive biography of Lillian Gilbreth will engage readers intrigued by one of America's most famous families and by one of the nation's most successful women.

5 out of 5 stars Mercy maude, what a biography!.......2006-06-09

"This is funny, you might like it."

That suggestion from a long-ago English teacher introduced me to a book called "Cheaper By The Dozen," which in turn kicked off a lengthy fascination with the Gilbreth family and their other books. Along the way, I got a taste of the fact that Lillian Moller Gilbreth was among the more important women of her generation, up there with Marie Curie and Eleanor Roosevelt. But, as other Gilbreth-philes surely know, her children's writings only hinted at that importance, concentrating instead on her role as the family matriarch. This, the first full-length biography not written by a family member, is therefore a welcome addition to the already sizeable collection of books about the Gilbreths.

Jane Lancaster's research is very impressive, as is her ability to overcome the surviving Gilbreth children's noted concern for their privacy. Through over a century's worth of private letters and papers, she provides a surprisingly vivid look at the family you thought you knew as a kid. More importantly, she provides a well-rounded look at Lillian Gilbreth, who even in early life was not nearly the demure introvert so often portrayed elsewhere.

Though very much a product of her 19th century upper crust California childhood, she was quite independent minded from the beginning, as reflected in her decision to go to college, get married and move East while most of her siblings never left home. A lifelong Republican and a close friend of Herbert Hoover, she was nonetheless an early and effective advocate of workplace safety regulations, paid breaks, eight-hour workdays and, of course, women's right to work outside the home. (Oddly, Lancaster makes no mention of Gilbreth's views on women's suffrage, by far the most prominent feminist issue of the era.) In earning a PhD, she overcame not only sexism and the responsibilities of a large family, but a "lost" dissertation as well.

There are also more stories of the children, although few of them are as lighthearted as the ones you already know. Chances are you'd already figured out that "Cheaper By The Dozen" and "Belles On Their Toes" were a couple of idealized memoirs, but if not, prepare to have your bubble burst! Lillian's long absences from home after Frank's death were quite hard on some of the younger children, and Lancaster suggests (without going into much detail) that many of their childhood memories were not all that rosy. Still, Lillian's heroic role in keeping the large family together through hard times comes through everywhere.

I do find Lancaster's thesis - that Mrs. Gilbreth's reputation was shortchanged through her simplistic portrayal in "Cheaper" - slightly unfair. As at least four generations of middle-schoolers know, that book ends with Mother choosing to soldier on with Dad's business after his death and to continue raising all her children on her own. That was no small undertaking for a woman in 1924 or for a single parent of eleven children in any era. (If anything, it gives her slightly more credit than is due: Lancaster reveals here that she briefly sent one daughter to live with her grandmother in California.) The admittedly less-remembered "Belles On Their Toes" and "Time Out For Happiness" are both loaded down with accolades for her achievements both at home and professionally. Also, engineering is not like music, sports, art, or literature - the geniuses of the field, male or female, are generally remembered only by people who practice it. Still, Lancaster does have a point that this pioneering giant of her profession is too often remembered only as a doting mother. And she's done a great job of helping to change that.

5 out of 5 stars Single Mom, Eleven Children - WOW!.......2005-08-25

When you think of Lillian (Cheaper by the Dozen) Gilbreth you can help but think of her more as a mother than anything else. The movie presented a story of a wonderful mother, but none the less, just a mother. As is often the case reading the book gives one a much better, much more complete story of her life.

You don't think of a female engineer from her time. Engineering was something that a man did. Yet she was an engineer of some reknown. And being left after her husband's death with eleven children under nineteen she had to face many of the same problems that women have to face today.

To see how she faced them so many years ago is enlightning. Just to see that all of that many children graduated from college is rather amazing even in our world.

5 out of 5 stars Carefully scrutinized, very well written.......2004-08-15

The work of the Gilbreth couple has been influencing the way people work both in industry and at home since the beginning of the last century; and this influence has been quite underestimated, mainly because of the lasting succes of the books "Cheaper By the Dozen" and "Belles on Their Toes". The time has come to write a both thorough and neutral review on this work and to show the driving forces behind it. I am very pleased to say that Jane Lancaster with her book "Making Time" wrote this perfect review, which is carefully researched from the scientific point of view and very well written for the reader's pleasure.

Ms Lancaster delivers several things: (1) A precise and complete description of the life of both Gilbreths (which of course is mostly the life of Lillian M. Gilbreth, because she survived her husband by almost 50 years). (2) A neutral evaluation of this work, where she points out that most of Gilbreth's work was outlined and carried out by Lillian M. Gilbreth, although Ms Gilbreth kept herself in the background during the life of her husband. (3) The creation of a well-deserved attention for the work of Ms Gilbreth beyond her (not neglectable at all!) role of a mother of 13.

Having dealt with the work of the Gilbreth couple for more than 20 years, I highly recommend Jane Lancaster's book both for reading pleasure and for scientific work. "Making Time", in my opinion, sets the standards for the research on the work of the Gilbreth.

    4 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Written.......2004-08-10

I just finished the book. Lillian led an exhausting life of lecturing, travel and endless writing. As the mother of 13 children, she puts us all to shame (with many fewer children)because of her unbelievable work schedule. This book does a great job of paying tribute to her life's work which is clearly well-documented.
Although she did not promote herself as an activist for Women's Rights, Lillian Gilbreth took giant steps for all women because of her dedication to her family, husband, and her monumental career.
Jane Lancaster has a beautiful command of the English language. This book is well-written without being intimidating. I would definitely recommend to anyone interested in juggling family and/or career.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent bio of a woman well remembered for the wrong thing.......2004-06-27

Lillian Moller Gilbreth is well remembered today as the patient mother of "Cheaper by the Dozen". This book makes it clear that this was the least of her attributes.

Dr. Gilbreth spent over a half century as one of America's leading engineers. First colloborating with her husband, Frank Gilbreth, she spent the first forty years of her widowhood on an intense schedule of conferences, consulting, and teaching, finally retiring near her ninetieth birthday.

While the primary focus of this book is on Dr. Gilbreth and her engineering career, and the conculsion makes clear author Jane Lancaster's bitterness that Dr. Gilbreth is best remembered for the fictionalized mother of "Cheaper by the Dozen", fans of the book will find material to satisfy them. Several chapters deal with the family's life. Few of the many footnotes are simply to "Cheaper" or its sequel, "Belles on their Toes"--appropriate, as a later chapter deals with how "Cheaper" came to be, and that it was written not as non-fiction, but rather as things should have been. For example, the episode in "Cheaper" where Dr. Gilbreth spent a day in bed, and the children were convinced that a new baby was due, having associated Mother's brief bedstays with childbirth, was based on Dr. Gilbreth giving birth to a stillborn, thirteenth child.

Jane Lancaster gives life to this pioneering woman engineer, unfortunately typecast by her children's books. Highly recommended.

    4 out of 5 stars 100% recommended - BUT..........2005-07-24

As someone who has been actively involved in aromatherapy for almost ten years, I couldn't wait to get my hands on Lawless' acclaimed book. Based on its title and description, I was expecting a true encyclopaedia - something like Worwood's "Fragrant Pharmacy", only more comprehensive and without specific recipes (I prefer it that way).

It IS an "encyclopaedia": it contains the descriptions of 190 + EO, probably the most you'll ever see compiled in a single book. They are arranged by alphabetical order, and the entries include a detailed description of the plant & of the oil, its geographic distribution, etc. It also includes extensive botanical, chemical and safety data. They even include traditional uses of the plant from which the EO in question is extracted (which, BTW, is not at all necessary - or even particularly useful - information, since EO can be extracted from parts of plants different to those that are used in traditional medicine).
All that information would be fine (if slightly superfluous) - if the data concerning the specific properties of the EO discussed had been more extensive. Of course Lawless duly lists all the actions (such as antipyretic, fungicidal, sedative, etc.) and "aromatherapy/home" uses. But the latter are listed in a "telegraphic" way that doesn't really appear to make any distinctions between the specific benefits of each EO. Of course many oils have very similar effects. But "similar" does not equal "the same".
A typical "Aromatherapy/Home Use" rubric (in this case, for spikenard) looks like this:

SKIN CARE: Allergies, inflammation, mature skin, rashes etc.
NERVOUS SYSTEM: Insomnia, nervous indigestion, migraine, stress and tenson.
OTHER USES: Little used these days, usually as substitute for valerian oil.

First of all, what is meant by "etc."? Those already familiar with the EO in question would know - but those who aren't probably wouldn't.
In this particular case, BTW, the data also fail to mention the cardiotonic properties of the plant, which makes the OTHER USES rubric incomplete. (I, for one, use spikenard A LOT!) Surprisingly, the HERBAL/FOLK TRADITION also fails to mention its regenerative effect on hair colour.

And this is just an example, picked at random.

I am really, really not nit-picking, and I hope my writing doesn't come across that way. I think Lawless' book is an extremely useful primer - and, yes, an "encyclopaedia", in a concise sort of way - that absolutely should find a place on the shelves of anyone interested in aromatherapy. There is no question about that. This book is 100% recommended. It is perfect as an introduction for beginners, and a very useful quick-reference book for those who already are experienced EO users.

I just find that it has perhaps too many general (somewhat superfluous) data on the one hand, and too little (specific) information on the other. I think it would be a very good idea to extend the "Herbal/Folk Tradition" and "Aromatherapy/Home Use" rubrics, to include perhaps some more anecdotal information (duly labeled as such) and somewhat more elaborated indications for its specific uses.
Then this book would truly become the unsurpassed treasure of aromatherapy data that it should be.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended standard text for Aromatherapy education.......2004-02-15

This book is recommended or required reading for almost every aromatherapy educational course, home use workshop, or personal study bibliography I have ever seen produced by leaders in the aromatherapy field in the United States, Canada, or Great Britain.

Application guidelines and chemistry overview are located at the front of the book.

To throughly learn a subject, whether by reading or class work, more than one source of information is necessary. I recommend at least 4 different sources of information and 7 is better. This text should definately be one of the 4 for aromatherapy.

2 out of 5 stars Not practical for home users.......2004-01-31

The first thing you notice about this book is that there's no color in it, which is misleading because the cover is so beautiful. I thought there would be photos of each plant and it's uses. Although it is in alphabetical order, it all sorta runs together. For practical home use, I do not recommend this book. For each plant it gives synonyms, general description, distribution, other species, herbal/folk tradition, actions, extraction, charactistics, principal constituents, safty, and FINALLY aromatherapy and home use. For me half of those catergories are of no interest. Lots of the aromatherapy and home use seems to be the same from plant to plant. It never describes how one should apply or administer these plants and essential oils for therapy. Its just not what I was looking for as far as a practical guide that you can grab and look up a certain symptom or oil...

I have not seen the new one so I can't say about it. This is a book for someone that is wanting to go beond the every day use of Aromatherapy

                  Book Description

A professional looking finish is the dream of most woodworkers. One way to achieve it is through modern spray finishing. Recent improvements in the equipment and widespread adoption have lowered costs making this technique widely available. But there is little information apart from magazine articles and our 1996 book. This book collects the best recent articles from Fine Woodworking on spray finishing and other modern finishing techniques.

Save yourself some frustration, and do some reading prior to attempting serious spray painting. There are only a couple good books, and this is one of them.

"The charm of gardening is that as everything is forever on the move, you can change and alter things as you go along.... Whatever nourishes your impulses should be your launching pad," writes Mirabel Osler, underlining her enthusiasm for "vicarious gardening," an approach she encourages both the novice and the experienced gardener to consider when thinking about their own patches, in her new book, A Breath from Elsewhere.

Offering her wise, witty, and exceedingly insightful views on gardening, Osler (A Gentle Plea for Chaos) winds her way down the garden path, pausing to address the beginners--those individuals tempted, yet still hesitant--and continuing with folks "who have already launched themselves into the unknown region but have not yet found their bearings." The final stop is for those nearing the end of their gardening lives, "for widows and widowers, partners and lovers, who may be struggling to keep the garden going but who can't release themselves from it without being overwhelmed by guilt." With such chapter headings as "There Are No Right Ways to Make a Garden," and "Surfing the Flower Beds," greenhorn gardeners will find comfort as well as inspiration from Osler's candid discussions, while "Dead-Heading the Guilt" allows seasoned gardeners to let go, move on, and make a garden of their own. After all, "by jumping in the deep end rather than treading water, it is possible to do something radical."

Osler's argument--to break the golden rules, follow your instincts, and create the garden that you desire--is made ever stronger by her personal approach, pointed humor, and skillful storytelling, effectively drawing the reader further down the path towards the garden as refuge--a place perfectly suited for "inspiration or freedom, for discovery or surrender." --Stefanie Hargreaves

From the supplier: Alcohol abuse remains to be the most serious substance abuse problem in the US and is also the leading cause of accidental deaths through motor vehicles. Statistics from the Bureau of National Affairs suggest that the abuse rate of alcohol in the country doubles the abuse rates of cocaine, marijuana and amphetamines with approximately one out of 12 American employees abusing alcohol. Hence, four major technologies were developed for breath-alcohol testers, namely, electrochemical 'fuel cells,' metallic oxide semiconductors, disposable testers and infrared absorption.

"Rosenberg's family was important to him, but art was his life. He taught for over 40 years just so he could have summers off to paint while earning enough money to support his family."

While many artists moved to New York or Paris, Samuel Rosenberg (1896-1972) stayed in Pittsburgh where he traced the transitions of his neighborhood through his life.

Some of Samuel Rosenberg's paintings seem to be more of an expression of the inner world. In "Becoming" I see the creative dance of a soul and is definitely my favorite painting in this book.

This book features eighty-two color reproductions and fifty black-and-white illustrations. "Fleeting Substance" is also rather stunning. When viewing art from 1941 and 1942, you can hardly believe all the art is created by the same artist. Although, it would be true to say that Rosenberg believed that paintings could reveal both a physical and spiritual reality. So, it seems that as he aged, he became very aware of the spiritual side of life.

His work is divided into four periods although the common thread is Rosenberg's emphasis on light. Which I think is especially interesting in "Becoming." The more you look at the painting, the more souls appear to be twirling and radiating light. He used sequential layers of translucent color and transparent glazes in order to achieve a shimmering effect. They do remind me of light filtering through stained glass windows.

Barbara L. Jones is the curator of the Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. In this book, she explores Rosenberg's art, his philosophy and dedication to teachings. She also includes quotes from critics of his day in order to give a sense of Rosenberg's critical reception.

Jones provides a complete catalog of paintings and preparatory sketches. She also explains how Rosenberg's paintings became increasingly abstract in the last twenty years of his life. This book is really a fascinating study and I'm sure you will find a few paintings that will inspire you.

The underlying stress on the daily life of the author and her fellow prisoners is very apparent despite the author's genteel and somewhat oblique manner of description. I imagine that one must avoid full descriptpions of the pain the psyche undergoes in order to maintain a sane perspective. Many people did not survive their prison camp experiences for many reasons. Just think of eight people sharing a 4oz tin of food and thinking how lucky there were to have it! The Japanese were brutal, horrible people in WWII. I lived in the Philippines during some of the VietNam war years and felt as if I lived on another planet despite having all of the conveniences of American life. This book was a treasure read. I contemplated the courage of ordinary people in extreme circumstances as I read it.

When I first read the title of this book "Three Year Picnic," I didn't pay too much attention. And I thought it is a book about someone's vacation story. However, I noticed that there is a subtitle under the title, "An American Woman's Life inside Japanese Prison Camps in the Philippines during WWII" then I realized that it is NOT what I thought. This is a truth story about a young woman, Evelyn Whitfield who spent three years in a prison camp during the Japanese occupation. In the book she portrayed the life in a civilian prison camp (of course it was different from military prison camp). In the camp, prisoners suffered from starvation, lack of medical treatment, mulnutrition, etc. However, I didn't find any in depth torture or physical abused by the Japanese soldiers. That was the good thing in that camp. But I was surprised. This book is not as "horrible" as other wartime stories/memoirs. Then I understood why Evelyn put the book title in that way.

This can happen to any of us, let's not forget it.

Many don't know what happened to American civilians in the Phillipines during WWII.

How inspiring that people like ourselves can survive such unbelievable treatment and then not only live to tell about it but take on the task of humbly sharing the experience in the hope that others, by knowing what can happen, may work towards preventing this from ever happening together.

This is a book that I and others I've shared it with, couldn't put down.

Recently, at a family reunion, I met a lifetime friend of my wife's family. He was part of the team, crptographer, that rescued Evelyn and the others from the camp. It was fascinating to hear from him more about the conditions found there in the Phillipines.

This is well told history, truly interesting history.

4 out of 5 stars I found myself wondering if they ever made it out alive.......2000-04-10

I stopped by the booth at the book fair in November that the publisher of this book put on. Evelyn Whitfield was manning the booth that day. She had sold all the copies of her book, but she was such a warm personality and sold other people's books so well, that I had to order a copy of her book.

She wrote the manuscript shortly after her release and return from three years spent in Japanese prisoner of war camps in the Philippines. This was not originally meant to be published as a book, but for some reason she has dusted it off and published it. I suspect the Premiere Editions is a vanity publisher, though I do not know for certain.

First off, I must get out of the way that the writing is somewhat amateurish. I might characterize it as something I would write.

She tends to write as I would expect someone of her generation who is not a writer would, with much respect for the sensibilities of the people like her. Everyone in her prisoner of war camp holds up rather well under the circumstances. She does not write much about disagreements, and the ones she does write about she laughs off as minor. While not having experienced the horror of a prisoner of war camp, my experience with living in close quarters with people is that arguments are much more serious that one would gather from the plucky crowd who inhabits her camps.

But several things do come through the story. The lack of contact with the outside world comes through so much in the story that I found myself wondering if they ever made it out alive. Having met the author, I know that she did. She does not fall into the trap of describing the events taking place outside the camps. As a reader, you have no context to compare against. As I suspect that they had little context in which to place themselves during their incarceration.

The absolute precariousness of their position shines through loud and clear as well. One never finds her in the exaggerated position where she is near death due to the capriciousness of a Japanese guard. No guns being pointed at her head. However, subtly she paints a canvas with arbitrary decisions regarding food, shelter, and bowing which show how much at the mercy of others they were.

The hope that the prisoners exhibit also is apparent. The internees attach themselves to any rumor that whips through the camp. Sightings of planes. Contact with former employees and acquaintances through camp fences. The disappointment shows when their camp translator is no longer allowed to translate in meetings with the Japanese authority, because she can understand the words they say in addition to the official translation.

I highly recommend this book. While not the greatest writing, her story is compelling.

As secretary to the inmates' governing committees, the author had an unusual inside view of their struggles to maintain the health, safety and morale of American and other allied men, women and children held captive over three years in the Philippines, climaxed by the horrible three week battle that destroyed Manila. Accompanied by contemporary photos, sketches and maps.

I originally had to read this book for a Japanese History class, and found it incredible. In the 1930's it was standard practice to take a written confession from prisoners before execution, but this one stood out and has survived to the present day for its insight and honesty. This is a person who, after unthinkable suffering acheived not only complete self-realization but the ability to communicate it to others. It's also facinating because, despite so much spilt ink about understanding the conservative Japanese psyche, this is one of the only non-fiction works which effectively and honestly tackles communal mentality and social hierarcy without over-complicating the issue. But beyond that, it is an incredible story not unlike a true-to-life Japanese version of Ellison's Invisible Man. It is a crime that this book is not well known.
