    Book Description

The second volume of Jane Goodall's remarkable self-portrait in letters, Beyond Innocence details some of the eminent scientist's greatest triumphs and her deepest tragedies. It covers the years following the publication of her groundbreaking book In the Shadow of Man, which, along with her articles in National Geographic, made her famous. Goodall's candid letters recount major events in her life and research, including her astonishing discoveries about chimpanzee behavior, the birth and raising of her son, the breakup of her marriage to Hugo van Lawick, the kidnapping by guerrillas of a group of her students, her marriage to Derek Bryceson and his death, and her growing concern about the future of her beloved chimpanzees at Gombe and elsewhere in the world. Beyond Innocence tells how many of the dreams of Goodall's youth were shattered, but also how she changed from a rather private observer to a public crusader.

5 out of 5 stars A Stellar Life Told in Letters.......2004-12-27

Jane Goodall is one of my personal heroines. Any time I might think that one person cannot make a difference and that I should just continue to sit and do nothing, I can read about Goodall and her singular and single-minded vision of changing the world.

This volume of Goodall's autobiography consists of hundreds of her personal letters, adroitly gathered together and explained by the editor so that there is a cohesive whole. We follow her through years of expanding her work with chimpanzees at her original research facilities in Gombe (where, as a very young woman, she worked ALONE), to her expanding environmental empire, to her ceaseless lobbying, traveling, letter-writing, speech-making, and appeals to leaders throughout the world to help in her efforts to save her beloved chimps (our closest primate cousins), baboons, other wildlife, and especially the rain forests upon which these animals depend for life.

Her letters show the private Jane, full of the joy of motherhood (she raised her only son, Hugo Jr., or "Grublin," in the wild in a childhood that had to be spectacular beyond belief, but was like any other mother worried about teething, late talking, naughtiness and refusal to do his math!), battling bouts of malaria while writing endless (it seems) books, proposals, thank-yous, acknowledgements, and so forth.

We see her through the pain of divorce, a happy remarriage, and the horror of seeing her new husband die of inoperable cancer. We see her renewed efforts to save her beloved chimpanzees, and her first horrified visit to a lab, where she was reduced to kneeling in tears at the plight of captive apes treated like things rather than the sensitive creatures they are.

The book ends in the late 90s, with Jane's latest conservation efforts still going strong. I was so intent and so wound up in her story that I immediately went to the Jane Goodall Institute Website to see what I could do in some small way to further her cause. But you don't have to be a conservationist to admire this strong, brilliant, single-minded and fabulous woman. This is a book for everyone, and I recommend it highly and unequivocally.

    Book Description

This second volume of Jane Goodall's autobiography in letters covers the years of her greatest triumphs and her deepest tragedies. During this time she made many of her most important discoveries about chimpanzee behavior including the dark discovery that like us, they wage war and commit murder. She gave birth to a son, Grub, but her marriage to his father, Hugo van Lawick, came to an end. When some Stanford University students working with her were kidnapped by guerrillas, she was thrust into an international controversy. She fell in love with and married Derek Bryceson. After surviving a plane crash with him, she realized that her life had been entrusted to her for a reason. A visit to an American laboratory where chimps were injected with HIV made that reason clear, and she began to dedicate herself not just to understanding chimpanzees but to saving them. Derek's death in 1980 was a terrible blow, but afterward she threw herself even more relentlessly into the battle to save our closest relatives and to repair the health of the planet. AFRICA IN MY BLOOD told of a young woman finding her life's work in the place of her dreams. BEYOND INNOCENCE tells of the events that shattered many of those dreams and changed her from a rather private observer to a public crusader.

    5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Life.......2001-08-01

I didn't believe that a second volume of Jane Goodall's letters could be as good as the first (Africa in My Blood), but this one is even better. The first volume contains the better-known parts of her life: the young woman going out to Africa, her apprenticeship with Leakey and at Gombe, her courageous research and amazing discoveries about chimpanzee intelligence, tool use, and warfare. Less familiar but no less compelling is the story of her life-beyond-science, her new and powerful role as a citizen-activist for the preservation of endangered species and their fragile environments. In her efforts to educate the world about the plight of this species that shares so much genetic material with humans, Goodall has never flagged in her perseverance. Her efforts have taken her from the village schoolroom to the halls of congresses and government palaces all over the world, and her correspondence reflects the intensity of her political activity, her untiring attempts to make people see their planet anew and to assume responsibility for their environments, whether in Africa or in LA. At the same time that the second volume shows the world of her correspondence opening up to include a much wider audience, though, she still writes her chatty, witty, delightful letters to family and friends.

Jane Goodall is a much more complex person than either her books or the popular conceptions of her, generated by the media, would suggest. These letters show a woman who endured considerable suffering and stress, who maintained her faith and optimism in the face of crushing realities, and who has inspired multitudes to change their views of Africa, of science, of women, and of chimpanzees, but in these letters you feel that she's at kitchen table in your house scribbling away, or that you've received a wonderful letter in your real, not virtual, mailbox. Read this book! You'll be surprised by what you find.

Many people may take up Beyond Innocence because they loved Africa in My Blood, because they think highly of Jane Goodall as a woman, scientist, and activist who commands an enormous presence in the world of animal and environmental studies. I came to the book, though, because of the writing, both the lucid, witty, warm letters themselves, with their brilliant details and insights, and also the superb editing and contextual work by Dale Peterson, who gives us the complete person, with her strengths and weaknesses, the myths and the truth. This is a literary achievement of the highest order, a poignant reminder of what we've lost in the era of electronic communication. Jane Goodall wrote constantly, and she wrote beautifully, and her letters reveal worlds and worlds--the worlds of her subjects, her subjectivity, and her readers. You will get a completely different Goodall here from the one you see in her books and in the biographies. This is an indispensable book, one that deserves to stand among the monuments of correspondence as a literary form.

5 out of 5 stars AN INSIDE VIEW OF AN FASCINATING WOMAN!.......2001-07-10

Who has not heard of Jane Goodall and her life-long devotion, research and protection of chimpanzees? During the years Goodall has spent in Tanzania, she has lived a life many in today's society would have an extremely difficult time comprehending, let alone actually living.

In this book, the reader learns through Goodall's letters about the inner persona of Jane Goodall, her personal blessings and tragedies. While this book is not written with the distinct powerful exuberance of "Africa in My Blood," I do prefer this one simply because to me it revealed more about the woman who lurks beneath the surface. She reveals her deep sense of purpose and her relentless devotion to the chimps shines through. She is, indeed, a woman with a mission. She is also a woman who, like the chimps she has studied for so many years, has come to understand the meaning of love, loss, hope, fear, happiness, heartbreak and enormous setbacks. Goodall's letter writing is superb, with eloquent English undertones which add to the book's quality and style. She has a knack for expressing herself in a poignant and impressive manner. One other book by the same author, also deserving of a five-star rating and highly recommended is "Reason for Hope: A Spiritual Journey."

5 out of 5 stars Moving Painfully Beyond the Gombe Preserve.......2001-06-04

This book continues the autobiography of Dr. Jane Goodall through her letters that began with Africa in My Blood. Dr. Goodall has been a prolific letter writer throughout her life, and this volume contains many interesting and revealing examples of her personal views. The book's strength is in taking you behind the scenes into events that are more briefly alluded to in her formal writing. The editor, Dale Peterson, has done an outstanding job of putting the letters in context and summarizing their material in useful ways. The editing is stronger than in Africa in My Blood. Despite the quality of the volume, I still prefer Africa in My Blood as a more moving and powerful expression of Dr. Goodall's life. In these letters, you will generally find her more reserved and distracted than in Africa in My Blood. I do recommend that you read this volume. You will add usefully to your knowledge of Dr. Goodall.

To get some sense of how many letters Dr. Goodall has written, this book contains selections from over 2000 which contain a total of between one and two million words! During one two day stretch in early February (7-8) 1973, Dr. Goodall wrote 63 letters!

The flavor of the book is pretty well captured by this quote about how the book "traces a falcon's rising gyre that turns beyond innocence through experience into wisdom, on to focused dedication."

The book is organized around themes, so that you can more clearly see the connections.

A delightful surprise came in the beginning with a description of how Dr. Goodall and her first husband discovered Egyptian vulures using rocks to break open ostrich eggs, one of the few examples of tool-using animals ever discovered. Dr. Goodall is also known for having uncovered the chimpanzee use of tools, as well. There is a nice photograph to show this in process. You will enjoy the many family photographs in the book, as well.

During this period of time, Dr. Goodall becomes a mother and raises her son, informally known as Grub for his eating habits. She also accompanies her first husband on many expeditions to the Serengeti. The book also details the evolution of Gombe into a permanent research site, including the awful setbacks when researchers died and when a major kidnapping occurred. The many research findings of those years from Gombe are included including the effect of the polio epidemic, and the discovery of cannibalism and war among the chimpanzees.

The book provides more glimpses of how she feel in love with and married her second husband, and her reactions to his untimely death due to cancer.

Dr. Goodall has become an animal rights advocate, and the beginnings of that awareness are developed here. She saw her first bio-medical laboratory with chimpanzees in it during 1987, and was appalled by what she saw. Since then, she has worked to change the way these labs are run to honor the high intelligence and social nature of the chimpanzees. Much remains to be done.

I encourage you to also read her other works. Having gotten to know the person, you should know her work as well. Chronologically, In the Shadow of Man is first. Learning with her is probably better than jumping ahead and reading the latest research first. Her way of describing the research makes you see the chimpanzees as individuals. To start at the end would be like reading a novel backwards.

Dr. Goodall's amazing life should be a source of strength to all. Where could your curiosity and passion take you that no one else has gone before? Do you have the courage to act on that curiosity and passion? Are you prepared for the inevitable pain? Be sure to take yourself seriously in this assessment. Dr. Goodall seems quite surprised by all that she accomplished. Your potential probably exceeds what you think you can do, as well.

This book is "the" book for any parent wanting an understanding of the process of destruction alcohol does to their child.

As the founder of a non profit organization dedicated to providing education, support and resources to parents (parentshelpingparents.info) who have just learned that they have a child abusing alcohol and/or other drugs. I found that this book did the best job in providing parents with the all the information they need and preparing them for creating a new direction for their child. For this reason, Our board of directors selected this book to provide to families.

5 out of 5 stars Honest and thorough.......2004-02-17

This book is a must read for any parent who has concerns about their child taking drugs. It is incredibly thorough in terms of covering all types of drugs, what to look for in your child's behavior/physical appearance, sharing various kids and parents stories, drug abuse from both the kids and parents perspectives, what to do and how to deal with the abuse, and most importantly, knowing that you aren't alone. A beautifully and honestly written book.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a must for anyone working with teens.......2003-09-26

I work with teens with drug/alcohol problems and this book is an absolute must. It is an excellent book in that it dispels the myths about teen addiction that are very prevalent in our society. These myths prevent us from dealing with our children, students, and patients in the most effective way. In addition to factual and up-to-date information about addiction's causes and treatment, it includes information from the teens themselves that is not ony profound but touching. While the book is full of essential research, it is also a book I could not put down. The authors artfully provide information in a way that keeps you wanting to turn each page. I know that as a result of this book, I will never again see addiction in quite the same way. This book has many practical applications as well as providing a paradigm shift in my thinking. This is a book not only for professionals, but for parents dealing with these issues. I consider it a "must have" book in working with kids.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent fun coffee table book even if you don't drink coffee.......2005-09-24

Here's the story of this book. One day I was at the old Barnes and Noble off of main street and this book was on the self and I noticed it while looking for a cook book. It was great! I almost bought it and then decieded not to. Well over the next 3 years I kept thinking about how I should have bought that book that I couldn't find when I went back to look (probably because it's out of print). Finally, I thought to look on Amazon, and low and libby, there it was! So guess what?????????

    I bought it!

It's such a great book. After leaving it on my coffee table (and I Don't drink coffee) and having all my "friends" read it, I took it to my classroom and now I share it with my students, especially when I am teaching sociology. It's such a good teaching tool. I wish there were more pictures, but even without more (and it has a lot, I just want more), it's a great book. Obviously some students get a little grossed out, but that's what makes it so captivating, some of this book is like that accident we just have to look at but more positive. My favorite are the parts on Balut, Placenta (no pictures), Rats, Insects, Rotten Fish, and so many more! As long as you have a little bit of an open mind (or a lot), I am sure you'll like this book! Also, here's a list of things I've eaten to date that might be considered werid:

---cultural foods that are uncommon in my area----
    Cow tongue
    Blood Sausage
    Gefilte Fish
    Menudo
    Haggis
    Sails
    Frogs Legs
    All sushi
    Fugu Fish (in Japan)
    Kangaroo
    Wild Boar
    Lama
    Rattlesnake
    Elk
    Alligator
    Bufflo Oysters

---cultural foods that are more different---
    grasshoppers
    silk worms
    scorpions
    chimbai ants (they're pretty big)
    meal worms
    crickets
taruantula (home made too!, WARNING TRICKY TO PREPARE THOUGH)
    wasp larve
    giant water bettle
    Balut

well, I am probably forgetting somethings, but you get the idea, I love to try new things!! I recommend "Typhoon" the resturant if you're in Southern California, and I recommend "Seattle's Finist Meats" if you want to order some interesting meat, I think they ship nationally? Good luck opening your mind, just don't let your brain fall out, THAT I won't eat, gross....

Lastly, if you have not yet registered with Amazon, this would be a good time to do so so you can rate reveiws, and rate products, and rate reveiws, and buy products, and rate reviews. Take care.
I am sure I am fogetting something here, but

    4 out of 5 stars Broadening one's horizons.......2003-06-10

Jerry Hopkins offers a glimpse into the wonderful world (universe really) of truly exotic foods, ranging the stinky fruit durian, which he refers to at one point as being like eating ice cream in an outhouse, to rats (not consumed often enough as far as I'm concerned) to even his son's placenta, which the author warns you to de-vein if you are to serve to party guests.
My only complaint, and it is a slight one, is that the book seems to be a little too concentrated on the cuisine and customs of Southeast Asia, which is somewhat understandable give the fact that Hopkins resides in Bangkok. However, I would have liked to seen some more information on Gamle Ole or the maggot cheese which is consumed in Sardinia, or hakarl (Greenlandic Shark).

3 out of 5 stars Have a meal on the wild side..........2001-10-25

Strange Foods is a fascinating investigation of foods that are unpalatable to westerners. It'd be a real treasure, but it is beset by both factual and writing errors.

One caveat: this is NOT a book for the squeamish - not only does Hopkins discuss, in great detail, the consumption of things like gorillas, insects, and endangered species, but Michael Freeman provides full-color, often full-page photos of nearly every food item in the book. If the text doesn't turn your stomach, at least a few of the pictures will.

The errors will also turn some stomachs, mostly those belonging to writers and scientists. The book is full of non-sentences and in some places seems entirely unedited; I found an average of four errors on each page, and I wasn't reading for mistakes. Hopkins' convoluted sentence construction and affinity for fragments makes for truly eye-watering reading at times. Although the factual errors were less prevalent, they were present, and in some ways they were even worse than the writing.

Also, there are areas where Hopkins carefully skirts the issues behind his culinary experiments; he's determinedly neutral on environmental and species-preservation issues. I imagine his stances would really irritate a committed environmentalist - the section on whales, for example, might raise a few WWF eyebrows, as would the section on bush meat (primates).

Still, the book is worth a read, even for people (like me) who are unlikely ever to try any of the foods mentioned. It's always good to see how the other half lives, and eating is a huge part of that. For world travelers, too, it is handy to know beforehand what to expect; those who read this book will be fully prepared for strange dietary preferences, no matter where in the world they go. I don't consider this book useful as a reference source (because of the errors), but it is entertaining. On the whole, Strange Foods isn't worth the cover price - check it out of the library or buy it used - but it is worth the time it takes to read it.

4 out of 5 stars expand your horizons.......2000-04-07

This book is written for the travelers of life, not the tourists. I found it to be full of fascinating information on the culinary habits of other cultures.

Although "multi-culturalism" is such a buzzword in America these days, few actually mean it. They actually want everyone to behave like spoiled, "politically correct" urban dwellers. This book is a refreshing change from that numbingly dull mindset.

The author seems like someone who truly respects other cultures...even if that means eating whales, dogs and other politically incorrect critters. He is sensitive about the environment, but will put your own cultural prejudices to the test.

I would have rated it higher but the biological misinformation that popped up throughout the book could be distracting. Calling "dirt" inorganic is just sloppy writing.

But, all in all, this is a fine book. I would suggest it to travelers, food lovers, hunters, biophiliacs and anyone else looking for a walk on the wild side.

    4 out of 5 stars Erp!.......2000-03-31

Moose Nose Jelly, Placenta Paté, Double-Boiled Penis Soup, Jelly Fish Salad, Asparagus-Scorpion Canapés, Deep-Fried Field Rat, etc.

Jerry Hopkins and Michael Freeman do a good job presenting the strange foods from around the world (but mostly Asia it seems). Mr. Hopkins trys to persuade the reader to expand his culinary resources beyond beef, pork, and chicken, but for this reader his book had the opposite effect. It's a good argument for vegetarianism although he does provide information about some unusual vegetables. This book more than anything else calls to mind the banquet scene in the film "The Dark Crystal" (qv). I think I'll stick to my mundane American diet albeit with not quite so much meat in it.

Some factual errors appear in the text that should have been caught during the editing process: armadillos are not reptiles but mammals; the sea cucumber is not the same thing as a sea slug (nudibranch) nor is it a mollusc; chitin, not 'chitlin', makes up 3-10% of an insect's body weight. Also, Mr. Hopkins repeats the story of a restaurant where the patrons consume the brain of a living monkey. I wish he had confirmed this personally rather than repeating a news item.

An intriguing book, but one that may have not have the effect the author intended.

3 out of 5 stars The title let me astray..........2005-12-28

The pages and projects shown in this book are very attractive, but I'm a complete newcomer to scrapbooking and the tools used. I'd hoped for a guide to how to USE the all these new gizmos, complete with helpful tricks and cautions, step-by-step instructions and lots of how-to photographs - not ideas about more things to make with them. Since I'm new and have no experience with this equipment, I can't even give an example of the sort of helpful tips I was seeking. Sigh! I expect I'll have more appreciation for all the lovely project ideas once I've actually gotten some successful experience with my new tools through trial and error. I'd hoped to avoid the 'error' part of that process with the help of this book ...

3 out of 5 stars helpful to newbies.......2005-08-02

I've just gotten into scrapbooking, and was a bit confused by some of the tools and materials on the market. This book provides a good review of scrapbooking tools and their use. Most of this material is taken for granted in magazines, and this book fills in the gaps.

      5 out of 5 stars Great resource.......2004-09-11

One of the reasons I enjoy Memory Makers magazine is the same reason I love this book. When they show you anything from a layout to a technique, they always have clear instructions in how to accomplish it. Some of the more popular books, magazines, etc. spend more time in telling which products are used and not how to use the items to create.

This book is beautifully photographed and contains updated uses for most tools you may have or intend to buy. All of the instructions are clear and accurate. Granted, I have been scrapping for about a year and some of this may not be as fresh and new to long timers as it is to me. Still, because of the reasons I mentioned, I believe this one deserves the 5 stars for rating.

It is obvious that the authors of the articles contained within this book know their stuff.

3 out of 5 stars A Trusted Resource Offers Inspiration.......2004-05-13

Memory Makers is a well known name in scrapbooking as their magazine is one of the firsts in the industry. The folks at Memory Makers have a reputation to maintain, which they clearly understand.

The concept behind this book is to offer ideas and inspiration to get you to look at your collected tools with a fresh eye. As the craft of scrapbooking progresses and new trends emerge, a common problem is to have an array of tools that seem old and boring. This book is designed to show you how a number of tools you already own can be used to provide fresh results.

For the beginner scrapbooker, this book will offer the justification for buying those supplies you've been coveting. You'll find a second project idea for almost every tool you want to purchase.

For the experienced scrapper (6 years for me) this book may be a disappointment if you expect too much. Of course, a lot depends on whether you own the particular tools they are showcasing and what your scrapbooking style is. In my instance, I found about 50% of the book offered me ideas I had not imagined. And that's not bad, but admit I was looking for more from such a trusted source.

This book is well photographed with clearly understood directions for duplicating the projects.

        Book Description

To grow plants at home, one must be equal parts botanist and Botticelli-there is an art as well as a science to it. Houseplants A to Z addresses both sides of that equation, providing sound, practical advice for purchasing, caring for, and decorating with 36 types of houseplants (and many more species), from African violets to zebra plants. As lavishly illustrated as its companion volume, Flowers A to Z, this new book by the same author-photographer team offers detailed information on purchasing, feeding, and propagating, as well as interesting houseplant lore. What really distinguishes this book, however, is the focus on decorating. Photographs illustrate ideas for arrangements, while artistically inclined readers will take inspiration from the author's suggestions for plants that combine well to create spectacular interior displays.

                      Book Description

This heavily illustrated handbook shows and tells plant lovers virtually everything they need to know in order to maintain house plants that bring life and color to indoor spaces. Here are single-page profiles of approximately 200 house plants, some especially desirable for their beautiful and often unusual foliage, and others for their resplendent flowers. Each profile includes a vivid color photo, information on potting, watering, feeding, required sunlight, fertilizing, pruning, and propagating. Plants are identified by both their botanical and common names. Here are palms, flax, cacti, ferns, large- and small-leaf plants, flowering plants, and many others. The book's opening chapter discusses plants' natural outdoor environments, and gives tips on replicating similar conditions inside the house. The book's final chapter suggests handsome arrangements of different plants to enhance every room in the home. More than 200 color photos.

                          Book Description

As a medical oncologist, Dr. Robert Buckman has been taking care of people with cancer for more than twenty years. For most of those years, he says, he has spent much of his time talking with patients and their families -- describing what is known about cancer (and what isn't), explaining why specialists have recommended one type of treatment rather than another, or outlining the potential benefits and disadvantages of each treatment option. Many patients, he finds, are well informed about specific aspects of a disease or treatment, but few have a clear overall view. "The patients have a catalogue of the trees," he writes, "but not a map of the forest."

With this book, Dr. Buckman provides that much needed map: a concise and understandable guide to the basic facts about cancer and the general principles of treatment based on the most up-to-date medical information. Written for cancer patients and their families, it combines a complete and accessible general explanation of cancer with detailed information about specific kinds of cancer, all presented in a voice that is as authoritative as it is kind. Dr. Buckman's goal is to provide the background information patients and their families need to conduct more focused and productive discussions with their doctors about their own cases and concerns.

This easy-to-use guide covers the essential topics relating to cancer and its treatment:

                          • What is cancer? • What we know about the causes of cancer -- what makes cells turn cancerous and triggers the various mech-anisms involved in that process • What do the words cure and remission mean? • An overview of the most common cancers • Descriptions of the sites of cancer and how specific cancers behave • Screening, early diagnosis, and prevention • The four types of conventional treatment • Surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and biologic therapy • Complementary, alternative, or unconventional treatments • Cancer, attitudes, and the mind • Can the mind change the outcome? • With so many breakthroughs, why is there no progress? • Why cancer research does not appear to be changing the situation for the cancer patient who needs help today • Living with cancer • How to control pain and manage common symptoms, how to recognize a medical emergency, how to communicate -- with friends and family, and the medical team

The text is fully illustrated with 76 line drawings and supplemented by appendixes on commonly used medical terms and what they mean, commonly asked questions, further readings and references, and other sources of help. What You Really Need to Know about Cancer is now available for the first time in a U.S. edition -- thoroughly revised for the patient in the U.S. health care system with the help of more than seventy cancer specialists at the renowned M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

"Dr. Buckman writes in a soothing conversational style and very effectively describes the pertinent facts about various malignancies and the types of treatment that are often employed. The book is an excellent resource for cancer patients and their families." -- Robert A. Brodsky, M.D., Johns Hopkins Oncology Center

5 out of 5 stars the science of cancer.......2005-05-22

I was on Amazon looking for a book more about the science of cancer, something left-brained and factual, rather than 'coping' with having cancer or other touchy-feely topics. This book is IT! In a very compact reference, this book explains what cancer is, what does (and doesn't!) cause it, and different ways cancers behave, spread, and grow. It discusses the current general aims the scientific community is taking to target cancer and dispells common "layman's" rumors about cancer. It also defines the common phrases one hears when dealing with cancer, i.e. partial or full remission, "cured", mestastisize, etc. All of this is in the first 3 chapters. The largest part of the book is the middle section, outlining all the different types of cancer, split up by organ or system, including which are more agressive, etc This is a great area of reference if you're looking for an overview for many types of cancer, rather than buying individual books on each type. The last part of the book is aimed more at patients and family members, on how to cope, both physically and mentally, with cancer diagnosis and treatment. While this book discusses treatment options in general (such as surgery or chemo), it does not have info about the very latest drugs and treatments on the market, for good reason: new ones come out all the time, and any text on this subject would be "dated" even by the time it got to print. Highly recommended, especially for the price!

5 out of 5 stars This is the first book a cancer patient should purchase.......2000-02-15

I was diagnosed with cancer less than a year ago and have read several books that describe cancer etiology, symptoms, and treatment. This is *by far* the most useful. Various chapters describe how cancer spreads, what the emotional and physical consequences will be, and what kinds of therapies are available. The heart of the book is a series of chapters numbering about 200 pages (!) explaining the symptoms and treatment of every major type of cancer, and probably most minor types.

What makes this book especially valuable is its clear, direct writing style which uses layman's terms but is still informative, without being condescending or too general. The author obviously has had a great deal of experience conveying medical information to laypeople. His compassion also comes through clearly and shows his sensitivity to the feelings of the cancer patient and those around him or her.

This is one of the few books about cancer that I will probably use as a reference and return to again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on Cancer I found for a newly diagnosed patient.......1999-01-18

Of all the books I checked out from the library, or borrowed from friends this was the best. Covers types of cancers and the symptoms and treatments of each. Chapters on causes of cancer and the latest research. Details for patients and their families on emotional reactions, alternative treatments, and living with being a cancer survior/patient. I originally borrowed this and 6 others from the library, and decided I could not live without a copy of my own (the only book on Cancer I have purchased). If you or someone you care about has recently been diagnosed get this book.

                              Book Description

The material in this book, originally titled What the OSS did for Hal Leith and What Hal did for the OSS was extracted from my personal diary. I kept this diary during an Office of Strategic Services (OSS) special mission, the Cardinal Mission. Our mission/goal was to extract high-ranking officers and all allied POWs from remote POW camps situated in Mukden and Hsian, Manchuria.

Due to repeated urgings of many still-surviving former POWs and attendees at periodic POW Reunions, I have written this story to the best of my memory and from written records and photographs.
