Book Description
This book is the story of the life of a private in the Army during World War II. It deals mainly with the daily events of the Author and his fellow soldiers in a combat engineering battalion in Europe. How life was on the front line. How we lived as a close knit family, eating, sleeping and working together as a unit under the strenuous conditions of combat. The Author included letters to an aunt that indicate his feelings and thoughts at that time and his hopes for future after the war.

History hasn't been particularly kind to Robert Hooke. Inescapably linked to Sir Isaac Newton, with whom he famously feuded, Hooke was also a notable associate of surveyor Sir Christopher Wren and Robert Boyle, the father of modern chemistry. Gifted in everything from architecture to anatomical dissection, he perhaps spread his knowledge too thin to have had a towering impact on any one field. His versatility combined with an impolitic personality damaged Hooke's standing in his lifetime and, author Lisa Jardine convincingly contends, in the centuries since his death. Jardine, the author of On a Grander Scale: The Outstanding Life and Tumultuous Times of Christopher Wren , once again delves deep into the 17th century to resurrect the reputation of "a founding figure in the European scientific revolution." A London-based professor of renaissance studies, Jardine brings great enthusiasm to her task, even embarking on some detective work to discover what she convincingly contends is a long-lost painting of Hooke, whose appearance had heretofore been limited to unflattering descriptions by his contemporaries. As readable as it is thoroughly researched, The Curious Life of Robert Hooke will stand for some time as the definitive account of one of history's great dabblers. --Steven Stolder
Book Description
The brilliant, largely forgotten maverick Robert Hooke was an engineer, surveyor, architect, and inventor who worked tirelessly with his intimate friend Christopher Wren to rebuild London after the Great Fire of 1666.He was the first Curator of Experiments at the Royal Society, and his engravings of natural phenomena seen under the new microscope appeared in his masterpiece, the acclaimed Micrographia, one of the most influential volumes of the day.
But Hooke's irascible temper and his passionate idealism provedfatal for his relationships with important political figures, most notably Sir Isaac Newton: their quarrel is legendary. As a result, historical greatness eluded Robert Hooke. Now, eminent historian Lisa Jardine does this original thinker of indefatigable curiosity and imagination justice and allows him to take his place as a major figure in the seventeenth century intellectual and scientific revolution.

The Curious Life of Robert Hooke.......2007-02-24
Definitely not for the casual reader or the faint-hearted but an excellent read all the same. You will need to be pretty curious about Mr. Hooke and his cantankerous personality to navigate this book. The extensive use of quotes from original texts and letters provides the story with authenticity that is admirable but sometimes, makes it a little laborious read. I suspect it is important to understand how Hooke was hooked on patent medicines and opiates, not to say the odd heavy metal, but constantly reading about his vomiting habits is not for the squeamish, particularly at the breakfast table. However this is a great read and I came out of it feeling more sympathetic about Hooke who accomplished more in each month of his life than most of us do in a lifetime. Certainly Lisa Jardine made a comprehensive effort to capture the whole man and succeeded perhaps a little too much.
The Curious Life of Robert Hook.......2006-11-03
This book is an interesting read, though it is sort of dry. My interest did not really get aroused by the book until the Great Fire and the rebuilding. Maybe I know too much about Robert Hook and the first part of the book was only a rehash of what I was already familiar with. I have always known about the Great Fire and the damage to the city, but had no idea of what went on in the effort to rebuild. Of course Sir Christopher Wren has always been "the man who built London after the fire" and this book does give a little more realistic description of how the interests of the various groups (the Royals, the Corporation of London, the Royal Society and the average citizen) were accomodated in the rebuilding.
Hooked on Hooke.......2006-04-13
I've been fascinated by Robert Hooke since studying science in the 1970s. Less well known than Newton or Wren but arguably at least as influential today, even if that influence is less obvious.
Who is Robert Hooke? Lisa Jardine does a great job of breathing life into a man whose greatest misfortune, perhaps, is contributing so much across so many fields. A true polymath, with a brilliant mind.
Highly recommended to those who want to know more about the development of science in the 17th century. The man himself may not be especially endearing, but his scientific learning is particularly enduring.
REVIEW OF LISA JARDINE'S ROBERT HOOKE BY JOHN CHUCKMAN .......2005-05-04
Robert Hooke's life was curious, a neglected topic that makes good reading, although a full, living sense of this man is missing from the book.
He was an ingenious, creative man, abounding with energy and interests in his younger years, whose acquaintances and friends included Boyle, Pepys, and Wren. He was widely recognized as a physics and general science experimenter of exceptional ability - a designer of both accurate instruments and experiments in which to employ them - almost certainly the greatest of his day. He might be viewed from today's perspective as something of the Ernest Lawrence of his day versus the great theorists.
Hooke's interests included astronomical measurements, microscopy, fossils, watches, the behavior of gases, and more. He was also interested in theoretical concepts although his mathematical abilities fell far short of people like Newton or Leibniz. Still, he came up with the hypothesis of the inverse-square law for gravity which he sent to Newton, asking him to prove mathematically whether it was valid. Newton never gave Hooke appropriate credit for Hooke's early insight, and it is not clear whether this was owing to Hooke's annoying carping or Newton's own very unpleasant temperament.
Hooke's early musings on the layers of fossils found on his native Isle of Wight demonstrate a remarkable analytical and creative mind at work. He got the process of their formation pretty close to right lifetimes before the meaning of fossils was widely recognized in science.
Ms. Jardine made the happy discovery of what is likely Hooke's portrait (no known one survives), a picture that had long been identified as being of John Ray. The circumstances of her discovery make a wonderful little tale early in the book.
What comes through so strongly from some of Jardine's anecdotes is how the basic philosophy of science had advanced by the second half of the 17th century, Hooke's time. This was, after all, only a few decades after Francis Bacon, yet the main points of modern science seem to be assumed by Europe's leading tinkerers and scientists.
Hooke's story is not a happy one, but I will leave that for readers to discover. Ms. Jardine is at times a slightly awkward writer, but she has an interesting story to tell and, on the whole, she tells it well. Ms. Jardine also wrote On a Grander Scale, a biography of the wonderful Christopher Wren. The book on Hooke she regards as a companion volume to the one on Wren. Do read both.
An Introduction.......2004-11-26
I think I would have liked this book much better if I had read it before Stephen Inwood's The Forgotten Genius which, like this book, deals with the life of Robert Hooke. The differences between the two books, however, are striking. This is not to say that one is necessarily better than the other but, rather, that each has its strengths and weaknesses.
The first thing of note in Ms. Jardine's book is that she has a case to make--that a portrait previously identified as botanist John Ray is, in fact, a portrait of Hooke. This may not seem important to the casual reader but it has been one of the commonalities of Hooke research that no image of him remains. (Whether through accident or the machinations of bitter scientists like Newton, no one knows.) In fact, it is her argument over the authenticity of this portrait (which has some merit) that seems her real incentive for writing this book. In some sense, the rest of the book is an afterthought.
This is not to say that the rest of the book is not worthwhile. It most certainly is. Ms. Jardine tells her story well. Ms. Jardine's book has one major advantage over Mr. Inwood's: it is much more readable. Her style is much lighter and engaging. She is telling the story for a general audience whereas Mr. Inwood's main audience seems to be scientists and historians. She vividly recreates his youth on the Isle of Wight and his flight to London. She is excellent with outlining Hooke's tendencies towards hypochondria and the many tonics he took to keep himself going at a hectic pace. I am also very impressed with her telling of Hooke's conflict with the Huygens family which often gets short shrift in Hooke's story due to the much better known conflict with Newton.
Still, overall, Inwood's book gives a much better sense of the man. There is a real depth missing in this book. Ms. Jardine talks of Hooke's conflict with Newton near the very start of the book and then hardly mentions it again, though this is probably the defining time of Hooke's life. Her ability to discuss Hooke's scientific discoveries seems rather limited and even her discussion of his architectural work seems rather superficial. She is also rather gentle with Hooke, the man, glossing over evidence of his many affairs with housekeepers and what almost certainly became an incestuous relationship with his niece as well as taking it easy on his notoriously bad temper, though she does acknowledge it.
At least Ms. Jardine recognizes Hooke's weaknesses as a scientist and doesn't try to convince us he is a disrespected genius. She sees that he often overcommitted himself--though often with good reason--and that he didn't have the innate abilities of Newton, Huygens and Wren. He was a workman--the best of workmen and he deserved respect for that--but no genius.
A five-star book would be a collaboration between Ms. Jardine and Mr. Inwood. Combining her writing skills with his research and scientific knowledge would do Hooke the best justice. As it is, I would suggest reading this book first for a good introduction and then Mr. Inwood's book for a deeper look at this great experimentalist, Robert Hooke.

Are you now, or have you ever been, in relationships with family, friends, or mates who have been verbally abusive? Is your happiness with someone you love continually threatened by interactions that continually undermine your self-esteem? Do you feel trapped in a relationship that keeps decaying in a downward spiral of overt or passive-aggressive abuse?
If so, this book could be your life raft, either carrying you toward repair of the existing relationship or the effects of past relationships or offering liberation from your current confusion. Its practical approach can help clear your head and possibly change your life. The only criticism that I and other readers have is that the author assumes verbal abuse is almost always directed by males toward females, which, in my experience and that of others I know, is not necessarily the case. Highly Recommended.
Book Description
If you or someone you know answers "yes" to one or more of the following questions, this book is required reading:
Does your partner seem irritated or angry at you several times a week?
Does he deny being angry when he clearly is?
Do your attempts to discuss feelings of pain or emotional distress leave you with the feeling that the issue has not been resolved?
Do you frequently feel perplexed and frustrated by his responses, as though you were each speaking a different language?
Almost everyone has heard of or knows someone who is part of a verbally abusive relationship-if they're not involved in one themselves. In The Verbally Abusive Relationship, you'll find validation and understanding-it's "not all in your head"-and encouragement for your efforts to change the situation. In this expanded second edition, author Patricia Evans explores the damaging effects of verbal abuse on children and the family, and offers valuable insight and recommendations to therapists, as well as those who seek therapeutic support.
Customer Reviews:
What a horrible piece of bitterness.......2007-09-22
I read this entire book at my wife's request - but the book was thrown against the wall more than once. I guess if you listen to this pompous and self-righteous author, that makes me an abuser. Of course, her main point was that if I am a man, I am an abuser. You could hear the bitterness of her probably coming from a bad relationship.
Of course women love this book. According to his author, a women is not responsible for her own happiness, her husband is. You don't have to get very far into the book to see her ridiculous list of things that identify an abusive husband - she's not happy, she doesn't feel understood, she is confused, her husband gets angry, her husband doesn't tell her his feelings, her husband tells her his feelings.
Then you go on to some more indicators. What "red flags" should a woman look for to call her husband an abuser? If he brings her gifts, if he takes her to a nice restaraunt, if he says he loves her, if he doesn't understand her, if she doesn't understand him, if he talks to her, if he doesn't talk to her, if he asks her if everything is OK, if he pays too much attention to her, if he doesn't pay enough attention to her.
Then this author goes on with the feel-good psycho-babble. If you feel it - it is true. Do you feel alone - you have been abandoned. Do you feel sad - you are abused. Do you feel like you don't understand your husband - you are being deceived.
How did she get the information for this book? By talking to women - only women. Not one single man. She didn't determine if what the woman was telling her was accurate or a complete fictional account. Why wouldn't she talk to men? Because we're all abusers - why would she waste her time talking to any of us. This bitter lady is a certified man-hater and it appears to be her goal in life to break up as many marriages as possible.
She offers about 3 pages on how to keep a relationship together - but not before telling the woman that the only real solution is to leave your husband if he is an abuser - and we're all abusers. She goes on and on about how there is almost no chance whatsoever salvaging a marriage, so you might as well divorce your husband and live alone for the rest of your life.
This is a horrible hate-filled book and it saddens me how many marriages this bitter woman will destroy.
Finally.......2007-09-11
My daughter said, "How does one study verbal abuse? The abuser denies it". So, this book is soooo helpful in describing the situation. Finally, someone understands! The author puts into words experiences so many have, yet cannot share. Not being able to share and be understood is a prison to the soul. The author also has some answers, and I'm sure more will come, even from the reader! If you think you're crazy, the "only one" who is unable to relate to your spouse, or a failure as a woman/spouse, a must read!
Relationship analysis.......2007-08-30
This book is very "text bookish" and I feel it would be beneficial to have written this book as more of a story line and not so much repetition. I was hopefull that Patricia could have focused more on the "abuser" becoming less abusive and more cooperative with his mate. I do like the short questionares she recommends to take to determine an abusive status in a relationship. There is truely much to gain by this book, but I feel a more personable approach would have been better.
This Book Saved My Life...........2007-08-12
With friends and family trying to convince me to stay with my husband...because he was the life of the party, so sweet and kind to them, and because I would be homeless and penniless if I left...
This book saved my life. I went from a "full-of-life" woman to a weak and depressed shell-of-a-person. I was so sad and exhausted from his verbal abuse that I didn't want to go on living.
So here I am, homeless and penniless..with nothing but the clothes on my back and Patrica's book under my arm. At least I know I am not crazy and that I can see a light at the end of the tunnel.
With all my heart...thank you.
Helpful advice on protecting yourself from verbal abuse.......2007-08-10
Verbal abuse might not be as visible as physical abuse, but it can be just as damaging. What makes this type of abuse so insidious is that the victim blames herself, further weakening her self-esteem, instead of placing the responsibility firmly where it belongs - on the abuser. Patricia Evans unmasks verbal abuse in all its hurtful guises, from the most obvious such as yelling and name-calling, to the covert manipulations of sabotage, double-speak and denial. Evans bases her insights and conclusions on extensive research. She uses real-life situations and dialogue to shed light on this dark, destructive ailment - though she sometimes can be repetitive and unnecessarily complex. Her in-depth analysis of the dynamics of verbal abuse may be more suited to therapists and researchers than to victims seeking coping advice. Evans would be the first to say that if you are in imminent danger, get professional help or a cop. We recommend her book to anyone who might be in a verbally abusive relationship or who cares about someone who is. Therapists and counselors will also benefit from this well-researched thesis.

Drooling, as I read.......2007-06-10
This is one of those satisfying recipe books that includes the reader in. The dialogue is chatty and warm and the recipes all sound delicious. Just as her original Baking Book is. A winner !
Quantity over quality . . . .......2007-01-10
I'll give her credit, Rosie has a large selection of recipes to choose from, but the basic layout of this cookbook is not ideal, and her measurements are a bit freaky. You'll see 1 cup + 6 tablespoons of flour(isn't that a third of a cup?) Or 12 tablespoons of butter, or 6 tablespoons of milk . . . Again, couldn't that be converted to something more mainstream, like liquid ounces? And the recipes are frequently not all on one page, so you get to flip back and forth from the ingredients to the directions. Her writing is very chatty and comforting, but the recipies I've tried (and there have been several) have only been OK - not memorable.
Such a great compliment to Rosie's baking book!.......2006-06-06
I enjoy this book as much as I do the baking book. I have never had a cookbook with so many 5* recipes. The recipe people request the most is the Baker's Best Snickerdoodles. Unbeatable.
This Is The Best Cookie Book Ever!!!!!.......2005-12-23
I couldn't beleive how good the cookies are in this book. She is so on the money with every single one. The one that really rocks are the Fudgie Wudgies cookies. Every time I make these, people want more. The 1st time i tasted one fresh out of the oven. I thougth the top of my head was going to come off. I can't wait for her to come out with another cook book. I bought her cake cook book aswell. And that is just as good as the cookie cook book.
Thank you so very much for writing these 2 cook books.
This is a REAL cookbook!.......2005-04-02
Every young bride should start with a cookbook as good as this one! The cookbooks that use 'quick' items, or 'premixed' items are not really for cooks that enjoy the entire process of making recipes. If you enjoy the process of really cooking, this book is for you! I am an exprienced cook, I don't really need all the detail, but it is much appreciated anyway. I don't know everything there is to know, the amount of time to stir, cook, and what the item looks like after you bake it are all very helpful. There are not pictures in this book, but I am having no problem finding recipes to make. Each one has been better than good. The brownies! UGH! They are to die for, they have started me on a brownie baking frenzy. All I can say is thank you so much for making the 2 cookbooks. I am so glad I do not live close to the bakery that she owns, I would not be able to keep away. I bought Kitchen Aid Mixers for several brides that I knew, it is my firm belief that all young brides should own one, if I would have known about this book, they would have gotten it, also. cindy

for your teenager's first dog.......2002-03-16
Because I've read dozens of dog books by now, I'm pretty fussy about them. I want them to have fresh new insights to solving problems I've found unsolvable. For that, this is not a suitable book.
On the other hand, it is an EXCELLENT starter book, written in a simple and very readable style. This is the book I would choose to give a teenager who is starting out with a new dog. The questions are posed from the canine point of view with charming results. Here's one of my favorites:
"I enjoyed watching television when I lived in Europe, but now that I have moved to America, all I see is a blur. What has happened to my eyes?"
Fogle goes on to explain that European television transmission is higher speed than in the US. American transmission is slow enough that all dogs see is dots. This will be cured when high-definition TV becomes more popular in the US. (Learn something new every day....)

GREAT PROJECTS. EASY AND INSPIRING........2007-03-14
This is a marvelous book. As I leafed through the pages, I wanted to make every bag project in the book. The projects are explained and illustrated in a very clear and easy manner. I've only been sewing for two years but I felt quite competent about completing any of the bags proposed in this book.
Really great for novices.......2006-09-05
I had trouble choosing which bag to make first. I am really keen to finish the first so that I can start on another.
I am very much a beginner....but this is great.
I have quilted together the patterns to make my own.......2006-05-18
I got this book as a gift from my husband! I was shocked that he would figure out this is a book I would want! So, the receiving it aside, let me get down to the review.
First off, this book looks very similar to "Quilted Bags in a Weekend : 25 Patchwork Purses, Totes and Bags" by Emma Hardy. The purses on the front of that book are in the book I have. So don't get both of these books.
Second, there are some really odd styles in this book. While the pictures are beautiful, they can be a bit misleading. I tried making the silk and velvet tote, but it was WAY TOO big. The dimensions given didn't seem to go with the picture. I cut the bag down and it was much better. Many of the bags have an odd shape that isn't always appealing like a pyramid or oblong, or pointed corners and tiny handles.
Third, while I have appreciated the variety of techniques outlined in this book only pages of instructions are given for each bag. Every bag only has 8 steps to make it. Those 8 steps are not always the easiest to follow and are often cryptic when coming to difficult steps.
I have learned some new techniques like folding the lining outside the bag to give it an interesting border and I do get inspiration from the pictures.
If I were browsing in a bookstore, I would probably pass this one up for something with more descriptive directions and less oddly shaped bags.

Very helpful.......2005-04-20
I found this book to be a life saver for me at a time when I thought my 8 year old was going to harm himself or another family member. He has since been diagnosed with cyclothemic disorder but at that time he was having severe reaction to anxiety medication causing him to appear bipolar. The book helped me identify factors causing his behaviors and to seek out appropriate clinical help. I still continue to refer to this book when the going gets rough and recommend it frequently to others who have children having similar difficulties.
This Book is a True Blessing!!.......2002-04-03
I am a single mom , and both my sons have been diagnosed with ADHD. This book is truly a survival guide. It is very well written and understandable. It has answered all the questions that I had that no one else seemed to fully explain. I now have an incredibly deeper understanding of how my sons perceive this world of ours. I highly recommend this book to any parent looking for answers. It is like a bible and I am so grateful that I found it. The tips, charts, helps, and personal experiences make this book a must!!!
Parents, you can do it!.......2001-03-10
This is a wonderful book that can literally change the lives of despairing parents of children with attention problems. It doesn't just present coping strategies, it addresses the heart of the problems by exploring two main questions: how can parents move from seeing their child as an terrible trial to seeing him/her as a challenge that can be met? And how do they move from seeing only the child's behavior to understanding what's going on inside? After these two central underlying issues are addressed, parents can move on to strategies to help their child learn new behaviors, such as identifying when stresses are building, practicing relaxation and focusing techniques, and finding satisfying activities. The book also helps parents understand the strains on their marriage and their other children, and find ways to regain some peace and pleasure. I came away from this book feeling more equipped to be an appropriate teacher for my child, helping her to identify and meet her own needs, rather than another adult voice telling her to "behave properly." The book could use a little editing, but the ideas and strategies can help any parent move from feeling helpless and desperate to feeling capable of supporting, loving, and helping their child.
A Gentle Hand Reaching Out.......2001-01-06
After coming to your site today to order yet ANOTHER copy of this book, it dawned on me that I need to write a review also! I probably should just order a CASE of them next time as I am continually recommending this book to others. When you receive a diagnosis that your child has one or more of the "differences" that George Lynn writes about, it can be so frightening and you often feel hopeless and very much alone. This book is like a gentle hand reaching out to you in the darkness. He not only gives you the important clinical information you may need to move forward, but more than that, when you come to the end of the book you feel affirmed, encouraged, empowered and with the deep belief that "yes, my child may have these issues, but just look at his wonderful gifts as well!" In my work as a pastoral counselor I time and time again find mysaelf sharing this book with weary and often very frightened parents. I too know this feeling of despair as I am the mother of one of these wonderful, wild children! Thank you George Lynn for reaching out your hand to me and to my son through this healing book. You have saved our lives, and I am eternally grateful.
Full of positive, useful information........1999-10-10
Finally, a book that explains ADHD and all related disorders in one book. I appreciate the simple, easy to understand language, as well as, the techniques the author suggests. This book is the best one that I have read on the subject! A must for one's personal library!

Morgan's Sister.......2004-12-23
Morgan! You're such a jerk. You threw up on the rug again. Dad's going to kill you.
this kid is the man.......2003-02-24
I am a friend of John(who we call "crispy Crespin") I watched his spiritual journey from start to finish and this book does not totally totally totally (Tippett) do it justice but it is an excellent insight in to his brilliant mind. Amanda is also one of my friends and she is flattered to be the Good Voice. To this day I do not know if he found what he was looking for but, he defenatley found him self as an artist. I look foward to the books that are up and coming from the future american classic novelist. If you are interested in other levels of consciousness and reality support this starving artist's first attempt.
