Acne: it's not just for teens anymore. Thanks to changing hormone levels, many women in their 30s and 40s (and some men as well) can expect to regain a part of youth they really didn't miss. It's not the curfew—-it's the problem skin. Early on in The Acne Prescription, Dr. Perricone (The Perricone Prescription) repeatedly emphasizes that half his patients are adult women. And really, this book seems written specifically for them. He refers to acne as a systemic inflammatory disease. His three-part program aimed at reducing inflammation emphasizes widespread dietary changes generally based on the glycemic index of foods, taking a variety of supplements, and using specific topical applications. The diet features plenty of water, several servings of salmon each week, and lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. An extremely detailed guide to supplements offers an excellent education, and an illustrated yoga course provides a method of relaxation and gentle exercise. Few of the recipes from an extensive section are geared for novice cooks (almond flour pancakes with mixed berry compote, for example). If you're interested in curing acne problems from the inside out and are willing to make substantial lifestyle choices, you'll find this an excellent learning tool; in other instances, it may seem simply overwhelming. --Jill Lightner

1 out of 5 stars Impossible program to follow without a BIG budget.......2007-08-03

I think he should rename his book as The Acne Prescription: The Perricone Program for the RICH by Nicholas Perricone. Has he checked the prices of wild salmon and all the berries he recommended lately? They are sky-rocket priced. If I follow his program and buy his over-priced products, I would spend all my paychecks and some loans. I think he should practice his program with limited budget like the rest of us to see if it is realistic or NOT.

I think the most effective, economical program is The Acne Cure: The Nonprescription Plan That Shows Dramatic Results in as Little as 24 Hours by Dr. Terry J. Dubrow and Brenda D. Adderly.

4 out of 5 stars Good advice although a little self promoting.......2007-03-19

This book has really changed the way that I live. Not only has it really improved my overall skin quality, I have more energy and I am more vivacious than ever before! I have struggled with acne since I was about twelve years old. I have tried everything including accutane. It as not until I found this book and began following some of the principals that I really noticed a difference. I will say this, a really do not believe that all the supplements are required for you to reach your optimum skin health. I do fine with my fish oil and ALA ( which I will not buy at the overly inflated perricone web site prices), and watching my high glycemic carbs. I also take DMAE and eat a lot of salmon. Not only has my skin cleared, the entire color of my skin is different. People began to complement me for the first time in my life telling me that I had beautiful skin. In addition to the skin clearing, i also am much more toned and dropped about 10 pounds since the start of the program. The only problem I have with this book is it seems like Dr. Perricone really plugs his products waaaaay to much. The prices on his website are a little crazy for my taste. If you want to really save on your topical supplements go to a website called [...] With the products on this website you can make you own skin care products using cetaphil as a base. They are exactly the same thing.

    5 out of 5 stars I was a skeptic!!.......2007-01-29

I am 33 mom of 3 and at my wits end with Acne. I had been to a dermatologist again (off and on throughout the years) and been put on topical medications which were not working. I stumbled upon this and CANNOT BELIEVE that after 3 days my acne started clearing up. It has now been 6 days and it is only getting better. I went on the 3 day diet and am now incorporating his ideas into my regular lifestyle. I think I have lost 3 pounds too, but to me the clear skin is the best!! I have been taking a multivitamin, some extra Vitamin A and selenium drinking a lot of green tea, use flax seed on my yogurt and just started taking fish oil too and that has worked for me. If you have acne and really want a solution, I say give it a try...just incorporate what you can into your life and see. p.s. I love!! coffee but am going without except for maybe 1 cup a day.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-11-05

If you are into health at all, much of this information is obvious. However, some of the more specific information about nutrients, vitamins, foods and quantities are very useful. I found the book helpful and my serious adult acne problem began to lessen after a week or so when topical treatments did little.

    5 out of 5 stars IT'S A MIRACLE IN MY LIFE!!!!!.......2006-09-12

The plan and systemic treatment that Dr. Perricone has developed works! I wish there was a way I could give testimonials in his behalf on finally proving that acne is systemic. After having a child at 27 years old, my skin totally changed and I became very acne prone. I would suffer from mild to moderate acne at all times. It was very rare that I did not have some form of breakout on my face, neck, back and/or chest. I went to numerous dermatologists and received great treatments. However, nothing worked. I took the antibiotic - Tetracyclin off and on for over 9 years. Since finding this book, I have been eating the foods and taking the supplements that are listed in the book based on my type of acne. I look completely different. I even choose to go without any foundation on my face. His information is great. For the first time in 9 years, I have not taken any antibiotics. IT IS FABULOUS and my skin is radiant.

    Thank you Dr. Perricone!

      5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Dog Book.......2005-05-08

The dog has been man's best friend at least since the stone age. History is full of evidence of man's love for his dog and the dog's love for his master. There is good evidence that all the dogs in the world have originated from the wolf. There is evidence that wolves started to become domesticated about 135,000 years ago. The present-day dog has been domesticated for at least 14,000 years. Today there are about 132 different breeds of dogs. Dogs come in many different shapes and sizes and with varying degrees of intelligence. This book tells the story of 50 really smart dogs. The author is a veterinarian. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A collection of touching and humourous stories.......2003-09-15

Not recommended for those who don't wish to be seen crying over a book. Especially those who own and love their dogs very much.

I started reading this on a train. Sometimes I wouldn't help smiling and laughing out loud at some of the stories, and other times, I had to stop reading in order to stop the tears from flowing out of my eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Great For Teaching.......1999-05-21

Real life stories, useful for science, and life skills. Touchuing, humorus, and delightful and a must for every teachers classroom library.

5 out of 5 stars It is a very nice and warm book for the whole family.......1999-05-16

I think this is a wonderful book that the whole family can enjoy. It has humorous stories for those who like a laugh, rescue stories for the adventuresum, and of course the sad ending stories that always grip your heart. Overall I think this book has all the basic ingredients to make it enjoyable for the whole family.

5 out of 5 stars Smart Dogs reflect human intelligence.......1999-04-01

Adrian Broderick, grandaughter of Dr. Jules Silver, wrote a delightful story about her brilliant Austrailian Sherpard, Wally. Although she was 10, when written, it was a marvelous revelation of a dog manifesting human qualities.

The images are black-and-white. These particular designs tend to have a lot of interweaving patterns vaguely like Keltic knotwork but more irregular and "organic looking". There was plenty of detail to work with, and several formats are included. I used the TIFFs and converted to my own GIFs so that I could make the white parts transparent; this was quick and easy to do. I've had a hard time finding clip art suitable for my website so I am glad to have found several of the Dover clipart books.

        Book Description

For counselor Nancy Wainer Cohen, this book is the "sibling" to Silent Knife: Cesarean Prevention and Vaginal Birth after Cesarean (Bergin & Garvey, 1983) her critically-acclaimed expose on America's growing reliance on cesarean sections. Open Season provides fresh insights and new information on the subject, offering guidance to childbearing couples, educators, health professionals, and scholars who value the natural path of childbirth. Readers will find this book timely, informative, shocking, irreverent, and extremely readable. Cohen's intimate writing style presents a compendium of knowledge on childbirth in the fashion of a "personal letter". Her aim is to lower America's alarming reliance on cesarean section, which is currently at 25 percent of all births, and to return the responsibility for childbirth to women by encouraging them to choose the kind of birthing experience they wish to have. In addition to cesarean section, Cohen discusses many other generally unnecessary interventions performed on women during pregnancy and childbirth--such as fetal monitoring and routinized hospital procedures.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Oh my god!.......2003-04-04

I didn't even have a cesarean and still this book made me laugh, cry and shake with rage. If I have another baby I will require my midwife, doula or whatever to read this book! The first question on my list of midwife interview questions is "Have you read Open Season?" Yes, Nancy is angry, and I think it is completely justified. This book made me realize that everything I had suspected about American childbirth was true, and that a lot of the horror stories such as women being tied to the bed are still happening today.

        5 out of 5 stars Very Thoughtful.......2003-03-03

I know Nancy, and this is an example of how seriously she takes her support of women through the birthing process. She is wise, bright, clever, strong, and tells the truth, just as this book does. She will give you that same support if you are one of the lucky people she "midwives" through labor, delivery, and the life that comes after.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book, Wonderful Woman.......2002-11-14

Nancy Wainer Cohen is THE pioneer of VBAC in the United States. Thanks to her activism in this area, Once a c-section, always a c-section no longer applies.

This book is a marvelous collection of thoughts, insights, experiences, and tools for helping women avoid cesarean, either primary or secondary, and is well worth the reading.

4 out of 5 stars C-sections Rise to 22 percent in the States.......2001-06-26

In the May, 2001 issue of "Parent" magazine, an article states that the c-section rate has risen to 22 percent. Why do ob's prefer to do sections? This is an alarming rate that cannot be ignored. This book helped me. I had a cesarean my first birth and this book helped give me courage to birth my next 3 children as VBAC's in my home, along with a good midwife. I've met the author when she visited our city on a speaking engagement and she is the salt of the earth. Although she may come across angry at times, she comes from her heart. AND for gosh sakes...these women are being cut up and having their God given rights stripped from them! By the current statistics, we still have a problem here people!! I had hoped this book would be out of date by now, but in reference again to the May article, not much has changed. Read the book. Be informed.

3 out of 5 stars Should be titled a collection of true stories.......2000-08-30

I agree there is an alarming increase in cesarian delivery and birth interventions. However, I found the tone of this publication very angry and confrontational. Although truthful, the theme seemed to be stay away from hospitals because they will cesarian section you. I have been sectioned and feel a lot like many of the stories contained in the book. I also have had VBAC's with a mid-wife and birthing center afterwards. I read it as a refresher for another upcoming delivery, but I must say that I did not find many coping skills here.

I do see a value in every page of the first hand stories. Women in general need to take a firmer hand in the managing of all their medical care, not just childbirth and I think that comes across very well.

It also has many names of physicians you may want to avoid if you are seeking to not have an unnecessary cesarian section in quote form that could be important to patients not knowing their position on natural childbirth, VBAC's etc.

I do see the link it is suggesting that cesarian section can/is being used as a tool for staff time managment, patient time control management, physician convenience, income increasing for the medical profession and not always giving complete "informed consent" to the patient.

It does present many good arguments against induced labor, scheduled delivery times for induction, augmentation of labor, and scheduled first and repeat cesarian sections that are of value to the prospective laboring mother.

          1 out of 5 stars Hypocrisy.......2007-04-28

I haven't read this book but I did attend Bob Jones Univ. I have read the comments about the Klu Klux Klan and I have a question. If it was a religious organization then why would R.K. Johnson feel the need to say that Bob Jones Sr. (a man of God) had a soft spot for it. If it was solely a religious organization from its inception then there would be no need to make the point that he had a soft spot for it. It would automatically be implied. Also, another reason why I am not in agreement with this explanation is because I had a roommate who traveled consistantly with Bob Jones III. My roommate told me a joke that he promised came from the mouth of Bob Jones III. Here is the joke: There was a black woman in the hospital giving birth to her fifteenth child. The doctor asked her what she was going to name him. She told the doctor, "I will name him Roosevelt". The doctor replied back by saying, "You have nine boys and you named them all Roosevelt. How can they know which one you are talking to?" She answered by saying, "Oh, doctor that is easy. I just call them by there last name." When my roommate told me that Bob Jones III told him this joke I didn't believe it but he swore up and down while buckled over in laughing that he did. I just can't believe that explanation. Also, maybe the KKK was a religious organization but it did (and it may still) believe that black people were subhuman. So what brigde was built to black people?

5 out of 5 stars Great Biography about a Great Man of God.......2002-07-24

This book is truly a great biography of Bob Jones, Sr. The fact is the Ku Klux Klan happened to be a religious organization, not a racist organization when it first started. If you have your facts straight things can be looked at in such a better light.

Bob Jones wasn't a perfect man, but he surely was a man of God.

          1 out of 5 stars A long fan letter, not a biography.......2002-03-18

Written by R.K. Johnson, personal friend of Bob Jones, Sr. and in the employ of Bob Jones University at the time this book was first published, this hack job is anything but objective. Bob Sr. walks on water on every page.

Still, page 138 is a hoot, because the good reverend's own cheerleader confesses that Bob had a soft spot in his heart for the Ku Klux Klan!

            Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
